Publisher's Note It is Steveston’s time to shine! Summer brings everyone out and for good reason, there is so much to see and do. June starts with Doors Open Richmond; a celebration of arts, culture, and heritage. The Sockeye Run Car Show and Shine is a huge event where classic car collectors come to display their vehicles in Steveston Park. June brings the end of the school year, and the prospect of a never-ending summer commences. The Steveston Outdoor Pool and waterpark are open. Every second Sunday stroll through the Steveston Farmers & Artisans Market to pick up fresh food and locally crafted products. O’Hare’s GastroPub has just completed their renovation and welcomes you for beer, food and great company. This is all while preparing for the Steveston Wine Fest on June 8, Steveston Cider & Sours Fest on July 6 and Steveston Beer Fest on August 24. By far the biggest local event is the Steveston Salmon Festival on Canada Day and we share the details inside. The Richmond Maritime Festival follows on July 27-28.

Have you ever wondered about the Steveston Hotel? We took the tour and now you can read about the hotel’s renovation, the liquor store, cafe and the much-loved Buck & Ear Pub and Grill. This fall, Save-On-Foods will open across the street and the block will become a busy hub. We extend one-year anniversary wishes to Steveston Built, The Porthole, Cucina Piccola, Sanctuary Cafe, G-Men Ramen and Win Win Chick-N. We welcome new businesses Xyclo Bistro, Floria gift shop, Beauty Collective Studio, Burn365, Gracie Barra, GO Projects and Steveston Hub. True Conditioning Fitness is planning to move to the space above Coast Capital Savings. We say goodbye to Hunni's, DoTerra Wellness, Eliane's, WealthSmart, and Steveston Design & Tile. Ride a bike, sit on an outdoor patio, get out on the water, stroll the boardwalk or buy fish from the dock. Enjoy fresh seafood, mini donuts, ice cream and burgers. Sip smoothies, craft beer, coffee or bubble tea. The options are endless; enjoy this most beautiful seaside community in all its glory.

Steveston Hotel:

The Dawning of a New Era Story by Sarah Gordon

Photos by Sandra Steier

Once known as the Sockeye Hotel, the 134-year-old Steveston Hotel is likely the longest-running business in the village. The landmark building opened in 1895. It was renamed Steveston Hotel in 1908 and was one of six lodgings operating during the town's glory years when the fishing industry was flourishing and a multitude of canneries lined the waterfront.

Much like today, the historic hotel housed a coffee shop and saloon on the main floor and a dozen rooms for rent on the second floor. Steveston Hotel survived a devastating fire in 1918, which destroyed much of the community including three hotels. The establishment was used as a refuge for many people who were displaced after the fire, and housed the post office while Steveston was being rebuilt. Over the years the faรงade has transformed from Victorian to Art Deco, to its current appearance

reflective of the frontage of many buildings in the village. It is now in the process of receiving contemporary interior and exterior upgrades.

Joseph Richard Group (JRG) manages and oversees the Steveston Hotel, Steveston Cafe, Steveston Liquor Store and the Buck & Ear Bar and Grill. Philippe Renaud is employed by JRG, a restaurant management group. He is the managing director of the Steveston Hotel. Philippe has worked for 20 years in notable hotels such as the Shangri-La in Vancouver, and he spent a number of years working in the hospitality industry in the Middle East. He recently joined the Steveston Merchants Association's board of directors and is eager to contribute his ideas and to have JRG be actively involved in the community. Philippe

is

to

discuss

the

changes that have already taken place and upcoming plans to continue to modernize the historic building. He says, “We addressed some needs of the amenities, public spaces and guest rooms to make things work more efficiently. The newly renovated superior rooms are now available to rent. Plumbing and electrical upgrades were addressed along with the installation of flat screen TVs and WiFi. The rooms also received new bedding and carpets. touch along with c o n t e m p o r a r y bathrooms featuring subway-tiled showers with glass doors. Phase two of the renovations is now taking place. The twelve economy rooms will merge to become six junior suites containing two rooms with an adjoining bathroom. This arrangement is perfect for families who need a little more space and will include one queen and two double beds. The final phase will take place later in 2019 when the remaining five deluxe rooms will receive updates. In addition, a guest lounge will be created along with an amenity room with vending machines for snacks, drinks and ice. Wesley Robinson is the hotel’s operation manager, and the general manager for the liquor store.

He mentions, “A value added bed and breakfast package has been created for guests to enjoy breakfast at the Steveston Cafe at a reasonable cost.”

8

The hotel’s total room inventory will reduce from 25 to 19 rooms with the improvements. Once the transformation is complete JRG will post new photos and videos through social marketing and host a media event. Philippe says, “Steveston Hotel will continue to provide more value than the majority of hotels in Richmond or Vancouver, plus we’re located in the heart of Steveston Village which attracts many tourists with it’s history, boating tours, fresh seafood, and seaside charm.” Finally, the building’s exterior will be repainted, signage will be updated and the awning will be replaced. Guests will be pleased with the 21st century conveniences offered within this historic building.

Steveston Cafe You never know who you will run into at this community hub that fills up with locals, hotel guests and other visitors to Steveston. In addition to being a great place to have an authentic and casual dining experience, you will be served a generous portion by some of the friendliest servers in the village. No matter how busy the restaurant is these pros always have time for a smile and never appear rushed. Four of the staff have been working at the restaurant for over 10 years. One of

the kitchen staff has been loyal to the business for 16 years. Karina Gaziri is general manager of both the Steveston Cafe and the Buck & Ear. Most of her time is spent in the pub although she oversees the cafe’s operations and schedule. She says, “The most satisfying part of my job is working with an amazing staff and a company that appreciates the job I do. The cafe completed its renovations in early 2018. A new wall encloses the space from the hotel lobby and the liquor store entrance. The restaurant gained two large south facing windows, which not only brightens the room but also offers a view of the neighbouring Gulf of Georgia Cannery and a nice perspective looking out to Moncton Street. New flooring and artwork also refresh the look.

The menu has been pared down but still offers plenty of choices and the bestloved favourites remain. June - July 2019

The cleverly named Steveston Scramble (with a nod to the intersection sharing the same name) is a hearty meal consisting of scrambled eggs, your choice of French toast or pancakes along with bacon and sausages.

The early bird catches the worm and also catches the Early Bird breakfast. Served on weekdays before 10:00 a.m., this special consists of two eggs, bacon or sausages, hash browns, and toast for a low $7.

The Fisherman’s Breakfast is another popular choice and will fill you up with three eggs, bacon, sausages, hash browns, pancakes or toast. The Hash Plate feature two choices, either veggie or corned beef, and is served with poached eggs, hollandaise sauce and toast.

Open from 7:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. daily, Steveston Cafe is home to the all day breakfast. Lunch options include fish and chips, sandwiches, beef dip, burgers, and daily specials. Steveston Cafe 12111 Third Ave, Richmond BC V7E 3K1 Telephone 604-277-9511

Buck & Ear Bar and Grill On the north side of the hotel is the legendary Buck & Ear. After the fire of 1918 the establishment’s saloon was the only one left in town. In later years the tavern transformed to become the Buccaneer Room with a large pirate prominently displayed on the building. The name evolved to become the Buck & Ear in 2000, however many locals fondly refer to it as the Buc. The pub’s current location appears to have been added to the building in the

10

1940s although it is easy to imagine stepping back into the late 19th century with its dark wood panelling, long bar, hammered tin ceiling, and hard wood flooring. Pool tables and fireplaces add to the ambience. The large pub seats 200 with additional seating on the two patios.

JRG is known for putting customer service, craft beers and popular pub food in the spotlight.

The menu features classic pub fare. A sampling of the appies includes nachos, poutine, chicken wings, deep fried pickles and stuffed Yorkies (house-made mini Yorkshire puddings stuffed with shaved prime rib and topped with horseradish cream). Main dishes include fish tacos, fish and chips (it is Steveston after all!), cottage pie and Cajun chicken linguine. Burgers, sandwiches, soups, salads and plantbased choices round out the menu. Every weekend (Friday, Saturday and Sunday) customers look forward to the prime rib special, which Karina says is always popular. A secret you may not know, the Buck & Ear serves breakfast on Saturdays starting at noon and on Sundays from 10 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. You will find bacon and eggs, Eggs Benedict, Huevos Rancheros, and Cafe Waffle.

The Buck & Ear attracts a diverse crowd with special events catering to different age groups. Every Wednesday themed Trivia Nights are held (such as Disney and 90s music) where winners receive gift cards and other prizes. Friday night customers enjoy live music. The first Saturday of

June - July 2019

the month is Club Buck which attracts a younger demographic. The second Saturday is Rock and Roll All Night and the third Saturday features live music. The final Saturday is 80s music with a DJ, dancing and drink specials. The staff dresses up for the occasion. Karina mentions, “In addition to the extensive beer and wine menu with 17 beers on tap, JRG also has its own beer and wine labels. This pub is rooted in the community; it is a hub for watching televised sports, shooting a game of pool, and hosting parties and fundraising events. Children are welcome until 8:00 p.m. Buck & Ear Bar and Grill 12111 Third Ave, Richmond BC V7E 3K1 Telephone 604-370-3343 www.jrghospitality.ca/establishment/ the-buck-ear-bar-and-grill

Steveston Liquor Store Whether you are dashing out to a dinner party or have time on your hands to browse the shop, you will find a good variety of wine, beer and spirits along with friendly service at Steveston Liquor Store. You will find wines from Australia, Canada (B.C.), California, Chile, and Spain. Wesley recommends J. Lohr from California, and Calliope from Oliver, B.C. He also shares, “Garland Crest from Spain offers excellent value for a ten dollar bottle.” Some other top selling wines include Naked Grape, Bodacious, Jackson Triggs and Chateau Ste. Michelle.

Wesley says, “Steveston is a craft beer town.” The craft beer craze is holding steady and Steveston Liquor Store has four wellstocked refrigerated cases. Popular local breweries are represented including Steveston’s own Britannia Brewing Company, Fuggles and Warlock Craftworks and East Vancouver Brewing Company. The store also carries many of the products that are sold at The Buck & Ear.

Wesley Robinson

member has areas of expertise based on their personal preferences. With Save-On-Foods opening soon across the street, shoppers will enjoy the convenience of combining their groceryshopping trip with a visit to Steveston Liquor Store to purchase beer or wine to pair with their meals. ASK A STEVESTON INSIDER

Collagen can do more than benefit my skin? What’s the best way to get it into my body? True, collagen, along with elastin fibres in the proper ratio, restores elasticity to your skin and holds moisture in those areas, but they also benefit your bones, hair, nails, gut, and joints. Collagen is abundant in your diet if you regularly eat cow tendons, chicken cartilage, pig skin, fish, bone marrow, and bone broth. If not, products such as Lorna Vanderhaeghe’s Active Collagen™️ (capsules containing an 85% collagen and 5% elastin blend from wild fish) and CanPrev’s Collagen™️ (liquid containing Type I and III hydrolyzed collagens from bovine source) offer healthy, balanced sources of collagen that provide the necessary structural support to the various tissues, including keeping your skin toned, well-hydrated, and supple to touch. Benefits could be realized in as little as one month of use, and prolonged use will have additive and prolonged effects. Take care in your selection, as your allergy status may dictate which formulation is safest.

ASK A STEVESTON INSIDER What is ketogenic diet, and how can it benefit me? In a nutshell, keto diet is a low carb, moderate protein, high fat diet, with a typical ratio of 10% carb, 20% protein, 70% fat. It has received a lot of attention because of it’s weight loss effect and high profile athletes using it for energy and athletic performance. It has also shown promises for blood sugar management, mental focus and heart health. The diet triggers a natural energy consumption switch from primarily carb to fat, known as ketosis. The fat for keto diet must be from high quality sources to be beneficial, for example, avocado, unsaturated fat, medium chain triglyceride (MCT), coconuts, nuts and seeds.

Story by Sarah Gordon

JULY 1

photos by Sandra Steier

It’s that time of the year; 80,000 people are preparing to celebrate Canada Day in Steveston village!

“We are happy to celebrate Canada with the 74th Annual Steveston Salmon Festival and look forward to sharing it with our community and everyone that comes from far and wide. This one-day event attracts many visitors that come FRE again to back to Steveston again and take in everything our village has to offer,” she says.

STEVESTON VILLAGE

Brenda comments, “Kirstine and I are passionate about our community and spend many hours working on changing and enhancing this special event every year. Not only are we a great team but we are also very fortunate to work with a hard working, dedicated group of volunteers who put so much into making July 1 a success.”

34

E!

Brenda Yttri, president of the Steveston Community Society (SCS), and Kirstine Dickson, SCS board member, have co-chaired the Steveston Salmon Festival for the last three years.

Some changes are in store this year, while established traditions remain. Pass the syrup, please! Served hot off the griddle from 6:30 to 11:30 a.m., the Pancake Breakfast is run by the Rotary Club. This year the breakfast is located in front of the Martial Arts Building.

Brenda says, “The Rotary is a very enthusiastic group and is excited to do this. They give the Steveston Community Society a donation from their proceeds.” Hey kids! Chomping at the bit to join the parade? The Children's Bike Parade begins at 9:30 a.m. No pre-registration is required, just show up before 9:30 a.m. with your decorated bikes, wagons, scooters, skateboards or rollerblades, and be prepared to have a lot of fun! Helmets are mandatory and a responsible adult must accompany all children. Grab your Canadian flag and wave it high and proud! The big Canada Day Parade begins at 10:00 a.m. Watch for everyone’s favourite Steveston mascot, Sammy the Salmon, who measures a whopping 7’2” tall; he will be aboard the Steveston Community Society’s parade float.

July 1, 2019

Brenda mentions, “The SCS has limited the number of people per entry this year and will have more volunteers along the route to help things run smoothly.” New to the festival, two emcees will announce all of the parade’s entrants and provide information about the groups. One emcee will be situated near The Buck & Ear, and the other will be located at the southwest corner of Moncton Street and No. 1 Road.

35

“We would like everyone coming out to celebrate with us to please be conscious of people around them who may need to sit near the front to see the parade. We would ideally like the front of the viewing area along the streets to be left for anyone with walkers, wheelchairs, young children, etc. Our volunteers will also be helping out these individuals,” says Brenda.

The Easthope parking lot across the street from the community centre is the festival’s hub and home of the Salmon Festival Main Stage.

36

Drew Savage from 103.5 QM/FM’s Nat and Drew Show will be emceeing the Main Stage again this year. Opening ceremonies commence at noon on the Main Stage with speeches by dignitaries, and the singing of O Canada followed by entertainment through to 8:00 p.m. Performance details are being finalized, however it is confirmed that Vancouver’s iconic 54-40 will be the Headlining Act! The parking lot is a licensed Beer Garden area. To date the confirmed sponsors are Fuggles and Warlock Craftworks, and Britannia Brewing Company.

StevestonSalmonFest.ca

The festival and crowds have grown over the years; people are encouraged to walk, take transit or cycle to the event. July 1, 2019

Free bike and stroller valet service is being offered in front of the Community Police Station. Last year, the ever-popular Children’s Festival relocated from the Steveston playground to the baseball field behind the Community Police Station. The children’s zone is now called Sammy’s Fun Zone and the Family Stage is found here. Entertainment takes place from 12:15 to 4:45 p.m. Within this kid-friendly zone you will find an inflatable carnival and midway along with some fun new activities.

July 1, 2019

Like last year, smaller stages will be set up throughout the village. One will be in front of the Gulf of Georgia Cannery while others will be located in front of the Steveston Museum, the Steveston Tram and The Riverside Stage at Imperial Landing. Entertainment takes place at all of these stages throughout the day along with roving performances. Note: The Riverside Stage will continue to host entertainment until 10:15 p.m. Calling all car buffs – the Richmond Lions Club once again hosts a Car Show with custom cars, classic cars, hot rods and uniquely decorated cars. works tirelessly every year to organize this event and is working on having as many as 74 cars out to celebrate the festival’s 74th year. A stage will feature entertainment including an Elvis impersonator. Cars will be displayed on the east lawn adjacent to the baseball diamond. New this year is The Merchants and The Market, featuring the Steveston Farmers Market. This area will be set up on No. 1 Road from approximately Bayview to Moncton Streets and will continue along the perimeter of the Steveston Playground. This new addition to the festival provides a chance for Steveston merchants to display and sell their items. Artisans from the Steveston Farmers and Artisans Market will also be represented.

Steveston Playground is a space to picnic and play. Vendors on site will appeal to families.

38

Trade Show plans are in the works. Brenda has confirmed Rabbitat is being moved to give families an opportunity to pet the rabbits that will be much cooler and happier in their new location. Other highlights include the Japanese Cultural Show, Horticultural Show, Youth Zone, Martial Arts Demonstrations and an Artisan Gallery. Inside the community centre is an area where people can sit down and cool off. The SCS is also organizing an art show for festival visitors to admire and have the opportunity to purchase works by local artists.

StevestonSalmonFest.ca

July 1, 2019

What would the festival be without Canfisco’s salmon barbecue grilled over open fire pits? Over 3,000 plates are sold each year! The Salmon Barbecue can be found in front of the beautiful Educational Garden in the community centre’s parking lot.

July 1, 2019

Each plate of salmon is $16 and includes a beverage (to save having to line up a second time). The Japanese-style chow mein also has a huge following; it can be found in front of the Martial Arts building. Food trucks have shifted to the community centre’s parking lot. A wide variety of food and beverages can also be found at the outdoor food fair.

StevestonSalmonFest.ca

39

When the Main Stage performances conclude at 8:00 p.m. it’s time to stroll up to the waterfront to claim a spot to watch the Steveston Salmon Festival’s Fireworks at sunset. Perhaps buy food from one of the food trucks before they depart and bring it along for an evening picnic, or dine at one of Steveston’s many wonderful restaurants.

40

The Richmond Agricultural and Industrial Society has organized the Steveston Salmon Festival since 1945.

Brenda remarks, “We are very fortunate to be collaborating with a great group from the City of Richmond and our own community centre and city staff who go above and beyond to help us do the best we can do. We have had the Mayor and Councillors and our board’s approval this year to collaborate with the City and it has been a great experience.”

“This is not only the largest special event in Richmond; it has a rich history behind it. It is a true grassroots event that has only been possible to continue this long due to volunteers. We always encourage everyone in Steveston and Richmond to step up and see how they can help out, not only with this event, but any volunteer opportunity in the city,” she concludes.

Bullhead Derby, Sunday, June 23, 2019 Hosted by the Golden Rods and Reels Society. Registration begins at 9:00am; Derby starts at 10:00am until noon, and prizes awarded as soon as the results are tabulated. Location: Garry Point Park.
