Publisher's Note We welcome 2021 with renewed hope as the COVID-19 vaccine is being administered and perhaps later this year our lives will look a little more familiar. 2021 is the Year of the Ox, and this year Chinese New Year (February 12) coincides with Valentine’s Day and Family Day weekend. Teachers, students and parents eagerly await their next break which begins on March 15, followed by St. Patrick’s Day and the arrival of spring on March 20. Our cover features TumbleTown’s manager Dana Kimura and owner Connie Sherman. Steveston’s new movement centre for children offers programs that are different from conventional youth gymnastic programs. Read about Pushpinder Singh Dullat, owner of John’s Pan Pizza. In addition to selling pizza by the slice, his restaurant also offers a wide range of full size pizzas from specialty vegetarian and meat, to seafood, vegan and classics, or you can create your own. Beatmerchant Record Store’s storefront will close at the end of March and branch into online sales. Sinfully The Best is renovating the space at No. 1 Road (near Heringers) and is preparing to relocate soon. Shady Island has expanded their menu to include Wee’s Thai Kitchen. Wisteria Place, Steveston’s new seniors’ living community located behind the Steveston Buddhist Temple is almost ready for occupancy. After a wet winter, we are looking forward to the first signs of spring with warmer days, flowers and buds appearing and increased sunshine. CHRISTMAS 2020 Steveston village was in the holiday spirit this past December as almost forty storefronts sought the coveted title of “Best Holiday Window Display.” Congratulations to Collective Beauty Studio, the winner of $1,000 and a full page ad in Steveston Insider. The historic sites were also adorned with sparkling lights and decorations. Street posts received light treatments and added a magical look to the village. As well, a dazzling walk-through Christmas ornament at the foot of No. 1 Road was the perfect spot for holiday selfies. John's Pan Pizza:
Flavours From Around the World Story by Sarah Gordon Although John’s Pan Pizza is a small space, the kitchen’s output is impressive. With over seventy types of pizza offered, owner Pushpinder Singh Dullat is kept busy and he has plans to expand the menu. Pushpinder grew up in the town of Sangrur in northern India’s Punjab state. He recalls being taught to cook when he was a child. He says, “I owe my cooking skills to my mom and dad. They taught me the philosophy of cooking and serving. We do not cook to sell. We cook to feed empty bellies and put smiles on the faces of our customers. Serving food is sacred to me.” “My education is in computer engineering. I have worked in the telecom industry. My passion has always been cooking. My wife Harsimran Kaur helped me refine my ideas and after evaluating all the logistics and operational 8
requirements we decided to play with dough and bake some pizza,” Pushpinder reports. He sought an area in Metro Vancouver where he would love to work. Good fortune was on his side; he discovered John’s Pan Pizza was for sale in 2019. “The character of Steveston village was enough for me to say yes. Since June 2019 we have fought an uphill battle and have gotten over a lot of hurdles. COVID-19 has been a great business lesson,” Pushpinder shares.
“My appreciation for the support I have received from Steveston residents and business owners is beyond words.”

“I walked into John’s Pan Pizza with a vision to offer great food and amazing customer service. We worked on fixing the appearance and creating an identity for ourselves. The extensive selection of pizza combinations and flavours is our identity now,” Pushpinder says. One would imagine that if your parents owned a pizza shop it would be a child’s dream come true. Pushpinder mentions, “I have a daughter and a nephew. They both have their favourites. Kids are our best customers. The way they show excitement and happiness for pizza is amazing. We missed kids in 2020 during lunch breaks due to COVID-19. They bring a different exciting energy with them.” He comments, “Pizza resonates with me. The Punjabi in me thinks of pizza as tandoori naan with tomato chutney and toppings on it. The diverse nationalities of Steveston’s residents and tourists who visit us from around the world inspired me to play with different flavours.” John’s Pan Pizza offers a wide selection of choices from specialty vegetarian and meat, to seafood, vegan and classics, or you can create your own pizza. Some of the top-selling vegetarian selections include Margherita, Mediterranean, Pesto Supreme, Classic Veggie, and Eggplant Parmigiana. Paneer and tofu pizzas are also very popular. Meat loving pizza fans are drawn to the JP Classic, Supreme, Sicilian Supreme, Chicken Alfredo, Pesto Chicken, Halla-kahiki Moa, and the Aloha Honolulu.

In addition to full-size pizzas, pizza is also sold by the slice. This year Pushpinder has upgraded the equipment and storefront to offer a wider variety of by the slice selections. “My passion to cook and feed is the driving force behind our business. I do not compromise on ingredients. The veggies that go on our pizzas must pass my quality test. We use a perfect blend of top-grade tomatoes, herbs, spices, and extra virgin olive oil to prepare our pizza sauce, and our customers love it,” he remarks.

Flatbreads were introduced to the menu in 2020. They have become a hit with those looking for a less cheesy and healthier lunch or dinner choice. Salads are also made fresh in-store daily.
Pushpinder is grateful for his customers and his good fortune in having found this community. He sees parallels between his former home in Sangrur and Steveston as both are small towns with nearby farmland.
“2020 presented a new set of challenges and financial hurdles. We pushed through it with the support of residents of the village and my family. With the blessings of Akal Purakh, we are confident we will continue to grow and improve. Follow us on Instagram and Facebook to stay updated,” he comments.
He recently joined the Steveston Merchants Association to become further involved in this community.
“We gained thousands of new customers in 2020; they love our pizza flavours and combinations. Positive feedback through Google reviews and recommendations to friends means a lot to our business. I pay extra attention to negative feedback as it helps me find and fix the flaws. I try my best to follow up on all the feedback we receive,” he says.

“Steveston village is a little oasis in this big metropolitan area and it has a lot of small town character. The people are nice and appreciative. The chance to step out of the store and go for a stroll along the waterfront cannot be replaced by anything. I love the cozy feeling of Steveston,” Pushpinder concludes. New Children’s Movement Centre Opens Story by Sarah Gordon

TumbleTown is Steveston’s new movement education centre. It is here that children as young as six months old are introduced to programs that enhance cognitive processes through fun and challenging activities involving movement circuits, games, and music. TumbleTown Steveston opened on January 4, 2021. The first TumbleTown is situated in Vancouver’s Kitsilano neighbourhood and recently celebrated its fourth anniversary. The Steveston movement education centre is located inside the space that previously housed Wayland Sports and Cartwheels Gym on No. 2 Road. It has been completely renovated with entirely new equipment, flooring, fresh paint, and a ground-level viewing area was added. Managing partner and director Connie Sherman joined forces with co-directors Sharron Crowley (founder of Vancouver’s Aquaventures Swim Centre) and Kelly Sherman to develop a unique 22
and exciting curriculum with custom kid-sized equipment. Connie is a seasoned gymnast with expertise in establishing, operating, and growing highly successful gymnastic clubs. Her experience, technical knowledge, and charismatic nature help set TumbleTown apart from conventional youth gymnastic programs. A familiar face to many Stevestonites, Dana Kimura, is excited to join the TumbleTown team as the centre’s manager. She is a Level 3 certified coach as well as a certified coaching course instructor for Gymnastics BC. She was raised in Steveston and has been running gymnastics programs in Richmond for over 20 years. As the mother of a one-year-old, Dana endorses TumbleTown’s programs first hand. She was excited to see her son take his first steps in the lobby after attending a Tip n Tumbles class last summer.

Classes are designed according to children’s developmental stages. Through movement, toddlers’ gymnastics classes help children use all their senses and expand their knowledge. Exercises are proven to expand communication skills, build confidence, and help develop better memories. Preschool age gymnastics classes incorporate interaction to encourage independence through action-packed play. Children gain patience, cooperation, and listening skills, improve their balance, strength, and coordination, learn valuable social skills, develop self-esteem, confidence, and a “can-do” attitude and most importantly, they have a lot of fun! At age six months to walking, parents or caregivers join their little one for the Tip n Tumbles class where sensory and movement activities, baby exercises, and fundamental movement patterns are explored. Tiny Tots classes are for children 12 months to two years old with a focus on climbing up and down various heights and inclines, running, beginner jumping, stepping backwards, kicking and throwing a ball, gripping and hanging, free exploration, and introduction to structured play. Classes progress upward in age and include Tumble Tots (ages 2 to 3), Tumble Bugs (ages 3 to 4), Tumble Bears (ages 4 to 5), Tumbles n Tricks (ages 5 to 6), Tumbles n Flips (ages 7 to 8), and Advanced Tumblers (ages 7 to 9). In addition to gymnastics classes, TumbleTown offers Family Drop-Ins and Gym-Venture Days (half-day camps for children 3 to 8 years old). Inclusive programs are offered with various options based on a child’s specific needs. Whether for special needs or any children’s gymnastics classes, private lessons are also available depending on gym and instructor availability.

TumbleTown is a place where everybody knows each other’s names. It is both community based and it is very social. Friendships are formed between parents and children alike. The Vancouver location managed to stay open most of 2020 with the exception of three months last spring when many businesses temporarily closed. Before the centre reopened a comprehensive health and safety plan was implemented with cleanliness being a top priority. This plan is being adhered to at both locations to keep children, their families, and Tumbletown’s staff safe. With COVID-19 restrictions in place, the large 5,000 square foot Steveston centre can accommodate a maximum of six children with one coach, with two classes operating simultaneously for a total of 12 children in the building. When declared safe to do so, other special events will be introduced to the Steveston gym such as Parent’s Night Out. While you head off for a quiet evening, your children will play fun themed games, practice gymnastics, have a pizza dinner, and watch a flick. Children must be a minimum of four years old and be potty trained.

In-person birthday parties will also resume when given clearance, but for now, some families are choosing to book a semi-private lesson for a small group of friends as a fun birthday activity. TumbleTown will adapt a party around a specific theme or lead your child’s favourite games and activities.
