A Resource for Life in Dunbar Publisher’s Note Welcome to the fall issue! The changing of the seasons is almost here. Soon Dunbar’s tree lined streets will display their magnificent hue of autumn colours. People will take to the street to celebrate the annual Dunbar Village Harvest Festival. Families will gather to feast and honour their Thanksgiving traditions. Costumes will be assembled for Halloween, one of the most magical nights of the year for children. Walking in the crisp air, stomping through leaves, visiting a Southlands pumpkin patch, meeting a friend at a local cafe for a coffee, nesting in front of a fireplace with a good book, these are the simple pleasures of fall.
It was one year ago that I partnered with the Dunbar Village Business Association to start Dunbar Life magazine. We hope you are enjoying the community information on upcoming events, places to shop and items of interest. We encourage everyone to shop local, support the businesses, and feel proud of the community. A few new things you will notice in this issue - a fun map in the centre spread, another new local writer named Sue Dvorak, an update from Peter Delaney about changes to Dunbar Soccer Association and exciting upcoming events by the Dunbar Village Business Association. A Message from the President Dunbar Village Business Association We all look forward to the fall in Dunbar Village because it is the time of the year when we present our biggest event of the year: the Dunbar Village Harvest Festival. This is a time when the entire community gets together to have fun, meet neighbours, and re-connect with each other after the summer. Following up from last year’s successful flash mob, this year we are hosting a huge game of Twister – possibly the biggest ever in Vancouver – for people of all ages. Even if you don’t feel like twisting, please come out and cheer everyone on, as it should be fun for both participants and observers alike! Please mark your calendars now for Saturday, September 24th from 11am – 3pm. More information is in this issue of Dunbar Life and Dunbar residents can expect an event map coming mid-September to a mailbox near you. In October we are delighted to be offering Trick-or-Treat in Dunbar Village on Saturday, October 29th from 3-5pm; an event designed especially for the littlest ones among us. Granted we were a little surprised by the turn out of nearly 1,000 kids last year in central Dunbar Village; however, this year we will be ready for you with candy, toys, free Halloween bags, and non-scary entertainment on the street. In this issue of our magazine, you’ll meet Peter Curtain of Dunbar Physio and Mark Wright of Village Wines, two business people who are involved and active within our community in addition to running businesses here. As well, you will be re-introduced to Sue Dvorak, who wrote an article about being a Dunbar soccer mom for us last winter. This time you will read about her transition into mothering a four-legged child. We welcome Sue to the writing team and look forward to her articles in upcoming issues. Thank you to Peter Delaney, Vancouver United FC Soccer President, for his article on the changes to Dunbar Soccer and the amalgamation of Dunbar, Point Grey, and Kerrisdale soccer clubs. And since it’s that time of year, Sarah Gordon shares with us some of her memories of school days past. Finally, I would like to introduce to you the Dunbar Village Business Association’s 2011-2012 Board of Directors (photo on the page adjacent). We feel fortunate to have this group of involved business people volunteer their free time to make this community better. Each year we take some time to reflect on what we have accomplished as a business association and what we would like to accomplish in the year ahead. Of course the sky is the limit with ideas, but reality insists that we focus our efforts. This year we have made it a priority to promote family-friendly and healthful-living initiatives through our events (Harvest Festival, Trick-or-Treat in Dunbar, & Dunbar Village for the Holidays); working toward building the sense of community with Dunbar residents, visitors, and our businesses. In early 2012, we will consult residents to find out what kind of new businesses they would like to see in the neighbourhood and accordingly promote Dunbar Village to attract those businesses here. Streetscape beautification continues to be a priority. In addition to investing in flower baskets and holiday lighting fixtures, we are currently working with community partners to create a vision for our commercial space that includes new lighting, pavement treatments, and public art. Over the coming months you will see some updates to the first block on Dunbar between W16th & W17th, which we hope with funding will be duplicated throughout all commercial areas. I hope that you will enjoy this issue of Dunbar Life magazine as much as we enjoy putting it together for you, and that it continues to be your Resource to Life in Dunbar! It is Vancouver’s good fortune that Peter Curtain, owner of Dunbar Physio, chose to leave Melbourne, Australia in 1989 and relocate to our fair city. He concurs that his homeland is beautiful but there is no finer place to end up than Vancouver. Trained as a physiotherapist, Curtain began working at the five-year-old Dunbar Physio upon his arrival. In 1992, he had the opportunity to purchase the business and under his management, he has created a Dunbar success story.
Dunbar Physio is an eight-bed clinic with a rehabilitation gym and cervical and lumbar traction. Clients range from youth to seniors and come from across Vancouver’s Westside, with a strong and loyal clientele from the Dunbar area. Clients include recreational and elite athletes, business professionals and manual labourers, computer programmers and avid gardeners. Dunbar Physio treats the fit to the not so fit, acute and chronic ailments, spinal, muscular, and joint injuries.
Dunbar Physio offers a wide range of physiotherapy services including manual physiotherapy, acupuncture, intramuscular stimulation, and rehabilitive exercise therapy. Curtain points out that the use of needle treatment is a huge advancement since his arrival in 1989, where previously physio treatment would have largely been manipulation based. Since Curtain assumed ownership, the staff has increased from one physiotherapist to a staff of nine. Dunbar Physio has always been at the same location; however, in 2004 it doubled in size when the clinic expanded to a vacant space next door. Year after year Dunbar Physio has experienced steady growth.
Curtain works at the clinic five days a week. He spends half of his time conducting treatments, and the remainder of his time is spent tending to business management. Patient care is their number one priority, and delivering a quality product. Curtain and his staff believe that all clients are special; and they strive to make everyone who walks in the door feel that way, from the moment you arrive at the front desk, where your experience begins, through to the treatment room, it is all about personal service. Curtain’s team of physiotherapists includes Laura Andrews, Heather Baxter,

The highest form of recognition for Curtain and his team is the constant stream or referrals they receive from satisfied, happy clients. Physicians and their professional contacts, including shoe stores and pilates studios, are other avenues through which clients learn about Dunbar Physio. Curtain lives in the Dunbar area with his wife and two young children. He is an avid cyclist and enjoys racing. He recently completed the Trans Alp race in Europe, a six-day race through Germany and Italy. Curtain also races locally and enjoys the Tuesday night criteriums at UBC. Being a busy business owner leaves him little free time beyond work, family life and his passion for cycling. His favourite thing about Dunbar is the sense of community. Curtain enjoys living and working in a friendly neighbourhood where you can say stop and say hello to friends, and clients at the grocery store or on the street. The clinic has been an active supporter of community events. Currently they sponsor Vancouver Community Baseball at Chaldecott Park. In addition, they offer work experience with a number of local private and public secondary schools. Dunbar Physio believes in the importance of being accessible for their client’s busy schedules. Open six days a week, with impressive hours of operation (7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday and 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturdays) clients do not have to wait long to see one of the expert physiotherapists. Appointments and assessments are usually available within two days. Curtain is very humble and gives accolades to all of his staff, yet it is because of people like Peter Curtain, business owners who

Trick-or-Treat in Dunbar Village Saturday, October 29th, 2011 from 3pm - 5pm Halloween doesn’t have to be frightening to be fun! We estimate that last year there were over 1,000 little ghouls & their adults marching the streets in our first-ever Trick-or-Treat in Dunbar Village event. MY BEAST OF BURDEN by Sue Dvorak
I never wanted a dog. I agreed to getting one, but in much the same way one would agree that it’s time to go to the dentist. I’m not an avowed dog-hater. I quite like dogs, a fact I had to hide from my family. Growing up, I had dogs and loved them dearly. But these were small-town dogs living life “old-school.” They ran around the neighbourhood at will. We called them to the basement door to eat their bulk kibble mixed with – horrors – table scraps. “Walking the dog” simply meant one was walking somewhere and decided to call the dog to come along. Grooming meant taking turns with the kitchen scissors clipping and sawing off wads of hair with the dog flopped out on the lawn. Twenty years later, living in Vancouver, life with a dog was a much different animal. I had moved next to the dog-walking centre of Pacific Spirit Regional Park, where for years I watched post-walk dirty dogs being rubbed down with towels before being put into cars. Dog spas, grooming parlours, doggie bakeries, raw-food stores and veterinarian clinics sprouted up through the city. This city-dog lifestyle appeared both foreign and excessive, and was certainly more than I could handle. 24
Despite what is said in advance, women do the brunt of the work in caring for a dog acquired after children have been on the scene a while. The contributions of all other family members are basically symbolic of participation but not reliably so. Nurturing my own small human pack was challenge enough, let alone with the addition of the hefty obligations that came with a canine creature these days. There was enough to feel remiss about; I was not prepared to add a dog to that list. And so The Resistance began, lasting a good 10 years, becoming a feat of determination in itself. I nodded thoughtfully at the comment that no childhood would be complete without a dog. I suggested that my husband must be dreaming if, while our family consisted of a newborn, a couple of toddlers and a kindergartener, he was hoping we could get a dog. I swallowed hard when told once that I was selfish to not even consider getting one. I indoctrinated our children in the party line that “we could not possibly look after a dog properly,” a line they tried bravely to deliver with conviction. I smiled mechanically at the adorable new puppies my children’s classmates displayed in the schoolyard.

The defence stayed strong until my then eight-year-old daughter, for fun, wrote and illustrated her own dog-care manual, fit for distribution by the SPCA. This thing was unbelievable. Dog Whisperer Cesar Millan could consult this kid. My conviction wavered. Maybe I could handle it now – our youngest child was in kindergarten. Maybe I was being selfish. Maybe we could get a dog. The kids would love one so much. As in all battles, hesitation was death. I gave in. Our boxer puppy arrived, was adorable and, as predicted, was a ton of work. Maybe he sensed my lack of complete acceptance of him, or maybe he couldn’t have cared less. Regardless, he went on to become a strong-willed jumper, puller and ignorer extraordinaire. Training was a humiliating disaster: Our dog cared for neither treats nor approval. Here I was with six fairly cooperative children and one badly behaved dog. This struggle of the alpha female and her alpha dog seemed ridiculous. Though I kept up the horrible sessions with a trainer and arranged for dog socialization with friends’ dogs in backyards and in parks, I avoided “dog people” – the ones who share ice-cream cones with their pet, make their own dog food and tell you their canine’s age in dog years. Dog people feel compelled to offer advice – long-winded, authoritative and conflicting advice.
A truce has developed between us and it’s a blessed relief. He’s still a nightmare when he sees a squirrel. I still holler illadvised commands such as, “Cut it out, you idiot!” But mostly we walk along, almost contentedly. He glances at me and I actually smile at him. He checks on me around the house. I pass him with a pat and a kindly “bad dog.” On occasion, he comes to sit on my foot, his acquiescence to being affectionate. He doesn’t look at me but rather stares in the direction I’m looking. The other day, he stood beside me and leaned his head heavily against my leg. It was nice. I even talk to him now, almost like a dog person would. I still curse the amount of work he is, although I expected that part. I just never expected to like him. But I do. He’s my dog.
So I took to walking my beast of burden in the dark of morning, before all the dog people were prowling about. These walks were a battle of him walking ahead or sitting and me stopping and waiting. There we were for months, angry woman cursing and sweating and strong-willed dog pulling and stopping, often in the pouring rain. We were not feeling the love. But slowly something good started to happen. We gradually began to ignore each other. We relaxed in each other’s company. We gave up the struggle or forgot we were having one. We became Woman and Beast travelling together, even if only through the neighbourhoods and behind the schools. We became friends who read the paper together without talking. I walk, think, pray, make lists in my head; he trots alongside, pees, sniffs and snuffles. He doesn’t pull and I don’t stop.
Sue Dvorak, a physiotherapist, her husband Marcel and their six children, now aged 8 - 18, live in the Dunbar area where, over the past 17 years, they have found their parish, preschool, elementary school, shops and services, playgrounds, friends, soccer teams and, more recently, dog-walking routes in Dunbar.

VANCOUVER UNITED FC House League is a non-competitive program that introduces boys and girls in grades K through 4 to soccer. At the youngest age level (U6) the players play in a co-ed boys and girls league. From U7 to U10, the boys and girls play on separate teams. At the younger ages, players play on small fields with 3 players each side. In subsequent years, the field size gets larger as does the number of players on each field, up to 7-a-side at the U10 level. Each player will get equal playing time and will be given the opportunity to play all positions. Every effort is made to create balanced teams. Sportsmanship, fair play, and teamwork are stressed. VUFC strongly encourages that all games are played in a competitive atmosphere whereby the result is not a factor. Coaches, club officials, parents, and players should all contribute to fostering a playing environment where the players’ individual needs and development are more important than the result of the games. In all Small Sided Games/House League programming the emphasis shall be placed on development, fun, sportsmanship, education, and respect for teammates, the opponents and officials. Scores or game results may be tracked by the coordinator for future scheduling purposes and to avoid future unfavorable game match ups. Scores are not to be compiled for the sake of standings or league tables. The Soccer Season
U8 age groups move their practices inside to local school gymnasiums. Practice times are determined by the coaches and field/ gymnasium availability. U9 and U10 groups hold mid week outdoor practices at local school gravel fields. Days and times will be forwarded to parents as soon as available. Field Locations Games are played at various fields around the each House community. The soccer season starts in mid-September and finishes with a Jamboree in early March. There are no games scheduled on the Thanksgiving weekend or during the Christmas break (mid-December to earlyJanuary). Games are cancelled occasionally due to bad weather. Games are played Saturdays - starting from 9:00 and might be played as late as 3:00 (please see your specific age group information for more details as to the time your child will be playing). The games are played against other House teams, and at the higher levels, against teams from neighbouring soccer clubs.
All House league players will be supplied with a uniform (jersey, shorts, and socks) in September, which must be returned at the end of the season. All players are required to wear shin guards; soccer cleats are recommended and no baseball hats or other hard objects should be worn.

DUNBAR SOCCER ASSOCIATION The face of youth community soccer has recently changed in Vancouver, and especially on the westside of the city. A new club, Vancouver United FC, has formed combining the three local clubs that had been in existence for over 50 years – the Dunbar Soccer Association, Kerrisdale Soccer Association, and Point Grey Soccer Association. The new club represents over 3700 players from the ages of 5 to 17 years old. It is the largest youth soccer club in Vancouver and one of the largest soccer clubs in western Canada. Why this change when the three existing clubs have been in their respective neighbourhoods for over 50 years? For the past number of years the clubs were already integrated in many ways, including sharing the same technical directors, undertaking joint player assessments and team formations, coordinating referee assignments, and developing and sharing local playing fields. With the new Club we are looking to more cost effectively and seamlessly deliver youth community soccer by optimizing the resources and volunteers available to us. We want to keep soccer an exciting, enjoyable, rewarding and reasonably priced opportunity for our players and families in Vancouver – especially on the westside of the city. Some of the new Club’s directions include an enhanced player, team and coach development program, pursuing ample playing turf fields and facilities for our teams, providing greater sponsorship opportunities to support reasonable registration fees while providing increased services and benefits to our players and families, sponsoring higher competitive youth teams in the club, and
providing an opportunity for adult teams to be part of the club. How are we doing this? The new identity of the Club started at a brand visioning workshop last April. Based on the feedback at the workshop the Club is developing a new brand, including new vision and mission, uniforms, club colours, logo and website. These club elements are being developed and will be implemented in the fall as they are established. An interim Board of Directors was created from the membership of the previously existing three club’s Boards. This Board will be in place until the first Annual General Meeting next spring. So have we forgotten our past? One important concern to many during the conversations leading up to the creation of the new club centred on the loss of our past. The previous club boards respected this concern and ways are being considered to maintain the legacy of the original clubs. For example, at the House level for players from the ages of 5 to 9, there will be little difference to the format that has existed for years. There will be three Houses – Dunbar, Kerrisdale and Point Grey – that will still represent their communities under the general umbrella of the new Club. More information about the new Club will be posted on our website as it becomes available (www.vanufc.com). SCHOOL DAYS by Sarah Gordon
I fondly remember my elementary school days. I attended three schools, in three very different locations. I started my schooling in Pittsburgh as a kindergarten student. Three things left a lasting impression on me: finger painting, the impressive quintessential two-storey brick school building with staircases that seemed to climb forever, and the song that we would sing each day “Red, white and blue, my flag I love you.” When I was in grade one we moved to a small town in Ontario where we spent four of the best years of my life. I loved everything about school. I enjoyed working hard. I could not wait to bring my report cards home, and I adored my grade two teacher, Mrs. Pickering, who has become a legend in my family. I hope that most people have a Mrs. Pickering at some point in their school years. These teachers make you go the extra mile, simply because they inspire you. That year my reading took off, and I pushed myself to read challenging books and do whatever I could to see Mrs. Pickering’s beautiful smile. I remember the dog days of summer when Mum would take my brother and me shopping for new school clothes, and even more exciting, school supplies. I remember the first day of school when the newly waxed floors would gleam after two months of being childfree. My heart would skip a beat to see new stacks of books, which I could not wait to crack open. The last day of school was always bittersweet, with the anticipation of summer adventures beckoning, combined with the sorrow of saying goodbye to school and friends. As much as we eagerly awaited the bell to ring one last time, and would run to the 30
door singing “No more papers, no more books, no more teachers’ dirty looks” I was insincere in my delivery. I knew how much I would miss the monkey bars, skipping, colouring and drawing with my friend Cathie by my side. During grade four, some earth shattering news came my way, we would be moving to Vancouver at the end of the school year. Not only were we shifting from a small town to a big city that I had never set eyes on, but I was also leaving behind a place I loved. Optimistically, like the childhood friends in the Bette Midler movie Beaches, my friends and I exchanged mailing addresses and promised we would always be friends. Amazingly, we have kept our promise. I proceeded on from my somewhat strict Protestant school to a very relaxed Vancouver elementary school. I assumed that the difference had to do with small town and big city schooling, and as a child of the 1970s, I simply had to “go with the flow”. Within two months, my brother and I were immersed in our new surroundings. We learnt how to take two city buses to get to our school on the other side of town, how to cross extremely busy West Broadway without traffic lights, and how to work semi-independently in an alternative education classroom. Emotions well up in me each September, and again in June, as my daughters go through their own cycles of firsts and lasts. As the first day of school approaches, it is symbolically a new year for many of us. Enjoy the adventures ahead, and Mrs. Pickering, if you are out there; know that you made a lifetime impression on me. □
