A Message from DVBA Mysha Dewar-McClelland, President of the Dunbar Village Business Association We are looking forward to autumn, especially after spending a wonderful summer enjoying everything our beautiful province has to offer. If we have learned anything during the COVID-19 pandemic, it is the importance of community and we are so fortunate to work and live in Dunbar Village. Every year Dunbar Village grows and changes but the relationships we develop here keep us strong and make this a great place to call home. This issue celebrates a ten-year relationship with Dunbar Life! We are proud to partner with them to promote and connect you, our loyal readers, with Dunbar business news and local events. We have all had to adapt this year and we are sure you appreciate how tirelessly our local businesses have worked to ensure the safety of their customers and staff. The Dunbar Village Business Association (DVBA) would like to thank you for supporting our local businesses as much as possible. Your support is critical during this time and is very much appreciated. We would also like to specifically thank the Dunbar Residents’ Association (DRA) for maintaining a list of businesses on their website that were open for essential services. This helped identify and support those that were open. Additionally, we would like to thank Dunbar Life for publishing a magazine that supports Dunbar’s businesses accompanied by social media posts. It’s amazing how communities and individuals are connecting, collaborating, taking positive action, and providing hope during these challenging times. In response to COVID-19, the DVBA is working with other BIAs to advocate with Business Improvement Areas of British Columbia (BIABC) for support at the provincial level. The BIAs created an Open With Care campaign to urge Vancouverites to support local businesses and are advocating for a municipal recovery strategy to assist businesses locally and throughout the city. We are thankful for the assistance and collaboration with all levels of government to support our local businesses and communities. The DVBA also provided 6

information to our members on how to reopen safely and distributed physical distancing floor decals and signage that businesses must display when reopening. In compliance with provincial regulations concerning large gatherings, we are sorry to announce we are unable to host our two extremely popular events - Trick or Treat in Dunbar Village and Dunbar Village for the Holidays. However, the DVBA Board is excited to explore different ways to reach out to the Dunbar community and thank all of its residents for their support. On our cover, we feature the DVBA’s hardworking and dedicated board of directors: Jeff Ho (Blight’s Home Hardware and West Side Paint & Decorating), Emma Irvine (Sweet Somethings), Niko Perivouliotis (Vancity), Stephanie Brooks (FYidoctors) and Mysha Dewar-McClelland (Elements Academy of Martial Arts). Missing from the photo is Vicki Bell (Massage Therapy on Dunbar) and Colleen Adams (Westside Orthodontics). These board members volunteer their time and meet regularly throughout the year to promote and improve the Dunbar Village business area. The DVBA’s annual general meeting will be held in October and we will welcome a new board at that time. Inside this issue, you will find features on Barre Fitness Dunbar, FYidoctors, and Preventum Skin MD. Thinking about getting back to a fitness class? Read why Barre Fitness Dunbar might be a good fit for you. They offer a unique workout combining ballet barre, pilates, functional training, and stretching. Owners Joèl Adrienne Amzil and Lani Brown are happy to be celebrating their one year anniversary in Dunbar. FYidoctors opened their first clinic in Dunbar in 2004. They recently relocated to the corner of W. 29th Avenue in a beautiful new store beside London Drugs. FYidoctors offers excellence in eye care and sells the latest eyewear.

Preventum Skin MD was forced to postpone its grand opening in March and instead had a soft opening on June 1. You can feel confident about their safety protocol when booking medical and cosmetic dermatology services with them. Our Champion of Dunbar is Olinda Vriend. For 37 years she owned Olindas, a unique ladies’ clothing store on Dunbar Street. When COVID-19 hit, Olinda got busy sewing beautiful masks that she sells for charity. Although we have had to say goodbye to some of our favourite local businesses this year, there are also some new businesses arriving on Dunbar Street. We are excited to welcome Bells and Whistles to Dunbar. They will serve cheeseburgers, onion rings, fried chicken, and soft-serve ice cream and describe their food as a version of classic Americana roadside fare. The restaurant is located on the corner of W. 29th Avenue and Dunbar Street (the former location of Dunbar Public House). We also welcome The CAO Law Corp, now open at 4180 Dunbar Street. Sadly, due to the pandemic, Elements Academy of Martial Arts and Tam’s Custom Tailor have closed their storefronts and Moki’s has moved out of Dunbar. H & R Block moved down the road and Dunbar Family Dental expanded into the space. We’d like to take this opportunity to wish all the businesses that have been forced to permanently or temporarily close all the best in the future.

You have likely noticed that a new development is planned for the block between W. 28th and W. 29th Avenues. Until construction begins, an Interim Community Garden has been built and offers a temporary growing space with 200 wheelchair-accessible community garden beds, in addition to seating, garden art, and a community noticeboard. This allotment garden is for community members to grow food and flowers. To contact the garden’s manager please email: garden@communitygardenbuilders.com On a similar note, we would like to inform you of an invasive grass-type weed called foxtail that has been found growing on Dunbar Street at the base of street signs, bus shelters, light poles, and against some buildings. Foxtail grass can create extremely serious health issues for any animal that eats it. While we work with the city and our businesses to address this problem, we encourage you to dig up any foxtail grass you see and dispose of it while ensuring not to loosen the seed head. Please do not spray or pour any poison on the area. We hope to find a long term solution. In closing, Dunbar Village merchants are excited to welcome you back. They thank you for following their new operating protocols and appreciate your loyal support during these very challenging times.

Welcome to Dunbar Village

Barre Fitness Dunbar:

Raising the Barre on Fitness Story by Sarah Gordon

Photos submitted

Barre Fitness Dunbar is celebrating its first anniversary in September. This unique workout combines ballet barre, pilates, functional training, and stretching. With a variety of class formats and modifications for all levels, no two workouts are the same. Joèl Adrienne Amzil and Lani Brown are the owners of Barre Fitness Dunbar. They met in 2016 at a playgroup their toddlers attended. Joèl says, “We spent a fair bit of time together and talked a lot about what was next for us in our lives. For something extra to do together, we thought we’d try a fitness class or two and I introduced Lani to Barre Fitness Yaletown. She really liked it and we got the idea to open a studio together.” Physical fitness has always been important to the friends. Dance has been part of Joèl’s life for as long as she can remember; she began dancing at age two. She continued to dance 10

through her teens and took classes as an adult. Lani was a figure skater in her youth, and as a junior coach, she taught children how to skate. Barre Fitness is a Canadian franchise. Barre’s co-founder Ella Jotie and Barre headquarters trained Joèl and Lani. Lani says, “We are also finishing up our professional fitness certifications with the B.C. Recreation and Parks Association. I am doing Group Fitness and Joèl is doing Pilates.” Joèl explains how they chose Dunbar for their studio. “We lived near Queen Elizabeth Park for many years and my older daughter went to school in Kerrisdale. After I dropped her off in the mornings I’d sneak in a barre class in Dunbar and got to know and love the community,” she says.

“When the West 41st Avenue location became available I was excited as it was a place that was wonderfully familiar,” says Joèl. They both manage the business and love working at the front desk and chatting with clients. There are seven instructors on staff. Their children attend the same elementary school, which allows these busy moms time to work during school hours. They are appreciative of their husbands’ ability to adapt their schedules to lend a hand with the kids. Lani says, ”When we have things to do, places to go, or a sick kid at home, we’ve been able to cover for each other. And we truly do have the most wonderful staff. Our front desk ‘Barre Tenders’ are the absolute best and they keep the place running smoothly, even when neither of us is there.” The space was formerly a fitness studio and required little work. Lani comments, “We painted the interior and refinished the floors. We had some custom millwork done in the reception area and in the studio, plus some new lighting and decor and

DunbarLife.com

that was about it. These changes really did make a difference and the space looks and feels great.”

“There’s room for everyone at our Barre,” says Joèl. Although their client base is primarily women, men also enjoy the classes and love what it has done for their bodies. University students through to people in their 80s attend classes.

are amazing and have carried us through many years and many different experiences and circumstances; they should be cared for and celebrated.” With the arrival of the pandemic, Barre Fitness Dunbar had to alter its method of operation. March 16, 2020, was the last day of in-studio classes. “It was a very strange feeling to lock our doors that day. We'd only been open for six months and then we had to shut it all down in what felt like an instant,” says Joèl.

Joèl remarks, “Their strength, flexibility and muscle endurance are staggering. I am inspired every day by so many of our clients. As for those who are newer and are just starting their fitness journeys, it is amazing to watch them gain confidence and skill in the technique. It seems that the magic number is three or more classes per week to feel the best results. Barre classes are a very good choice for maintaining body health. I have a chiropractor that recommends Barre above all other forms of exercise. It focuses on proper alignment and strengthening, toning, and lengthening every muscle group in the body in a way that avoids injuries that come with other forms of exercise.”

Lani says, “One of our key core values is focusing on fun and creating happiness. We want people to leave the studio feeling more energetic and joyful than when they came in.”

One week later they had set up a brand new virtual studio; clients took classes at home taught by the instructors from their homes. It caught on quickly and people adapted well. Some joined classes in real-time, while others waited to get links to the recorded classes to do at their convenience. On June 1, 2020, Barre Fitness Dunbar reopened. Lani concludes, “We have had to decrease our class size by quite a few spaces. And of course, we have all the proper cleaning and distancing protocols in place. Clients are steadily coming back, and it's great to see them and they are happy to be here too. Our little community is rebuilding itself, and it's a great relief. We still have a way to go before we get to where we need to be, but if things with COVID-19 stay as they are, and hopefully get even better, we are optimistic.” Barre Fitness Dunbar 3584 West 41st Avenue Vancouver BC V6N 3E6 Telephone 604-266-9191 www.barrefitness.com

Joèl adds, “We love hearing conversation and laughter before and after classes. There’s nothing better than having people just sit and talk after class, not rushing out, but enjoying the full experience. We not only want to offer great fitness classes, but we want to open up the space to connect with others.” Lani says, “We like to hear that our clients have fun and feel good in their bodies. www.HigherGroundGardens.com Garden Design in Autumn Your garden has now put on a show beginning with late winter flowers, through spring’s uplifting blooms and bulbs, summer flowers and now, in autumn, you can take stock of how your garden performs year-round and make any design adjustments needed. Top Tasks for Fall Gardening • Add new grass seeds to thin areas of your lawn and water daily until established. September is the best month for this task, as grass seeds require air temperatures of 16 degrees or greater to germinate. Warm soil will encourage root growth. • Plant new shrubs, perennials, hedges and trees. Take advantage of the warm soil and plants will establish roots before the cold winter months set it.

• Install composted bark mulch on all garden beds. Fall is the best time to install bark mulch. The mulch acts like a blanket to protect roots from cold winter temperatures. • Apply lime to the base of fruit trees. Lime takes about 6 months to change the pH of soil and will be ready in time for fruit production in spring. • Hedge trim all hedges for a neat winter garden. Trim and prune hedges and shrubs before winter Best practice is to shape hedges of all varieties before mid-October. This will allow plants time to harden off. Shrubs and hedges can hold their shape for many months, getting you more value the earlier you trim in autumn.

Jessica Salvador is co-owner of Higher Ground Gardens with Christian Kessner. The company is celebrating over 12 years of service in Dunbar. Higher Ground Gardens is going electric, using battery-powered hedge trimming equipment to provide a quiet and environmentally-friendly service.

Preventum Skin MD: Restoring Natural Beauty Story by Sarah Gordon

Photos submitted by SoWedding

March 2020 was the planned grand opening of Preventum Skin MD, however, COVID-19 impacted that exciting occasion when businesses were directed to close their doors. June 1, 2020, saw the soft opening, and although things are still not normal, Preventum Skin MD has protocols in place to offer medical and cosmetic dermatology services in a safe environment. Dr. Ali Farahani is a general practitioner with several years of experience in aesthetic medicine. Prior to Preventum Skin MD, Dr. Farahani founded Preventum Personalized Health in 2014 with a focus on individualized patient-centred health. His philosophy is to provide clients with options and education to allow them to make choices. The clinic is located on West 16th Avenue, just around the corner from the new business on Dunbar Street. Dr. Farahani and his wife Jennie Farahani (Preventum’s general manager) saw the need 16

for Preventum Skin MD, a restorative clinic that helps people reverse their physiological age within reason.

“Our intention is to restore our patients’ natural beauty, it is not to make them look 19 years old again.” Dr. Farahani As we grow older, signs of aging such as wrinkles, deflation (lack of plumpness), and formation of jowls surface. Skin can become dull and lifeless. Preventum Skin MD’s facial rejuvenation treatments help bring back a fresher looking you. Dr. Farahani says he sees a lot of people who are highly stressed and external pressures impact their wellness. One way to help people feel good is to restore their physical health and bring them back to their chronological age.

September 1 - November 15, 2020

“Preventum Skin MD is a patient-centred model. We want to hear what you want to do,” says Dr. Farahani. Preventum Skin MD is not an enhancing clinic. Dr. Farahani says, “We are not interested in making you look like a Hollywood celebrity. We simply want you to feel good in and outside your skin.” Dr. Michael Samycia specializes in cosmetic medicine and skin cancer screening. Head and neck surgery are Dr. Zam Dewji’s specialties. He dedicates some of his time to cosmetic Botox and fillers and has a special interest in Botox for treatment of migraines, jaw clenching, and jaw spasms. Dr. Melanie Levesque has recently joined Preventum Skin MD. She is a preventive family physician with a sub-specialty in aesthetic dermatology. Registered nurse Vicki Mulyk has over 20

years of experience in cosmetic injectables. She is a highly sought after Botox, Dysport, laser and dermal fillers trainer and regularly teaches dermatologists, dentists and general practitioners across North America. Vicki is an expert at making people look refreshed.

Jennie says, “It is rewarding to see people feel better about themselves.”

Wrinkles can be smoothed with the skillful application of Botox or Dysport. Preventum Skin MD’s experienced injectors use dermal fillers to plump the dips and hollows that give the appearance of aging resulting in a soft, non-surgical facelift. Laser treatments rejuvenate skin and stretch marks. Laser Genesis is a favourite for giving luminescent skin. Limelight IPL photo facial helps with brown spots and redness. Preventum Skin MD’s specialists will help you decide if a chemical peel or a silk peel with prescription-grade serums is best for you. Their PRP (Platelet Rich Plasma) treatments use the power of your own body to plump and rejuvenate your skin. Body sculpting is also offered with TruSculpt ID, which uses the power of Radiofrequency to permanently destroy fat cells. In addition to fat loss, patients see an improved contour and shape. Acne can be distressing. From small bumps to painful cysts and the scars that follow, this condition affects over 80 per cent of us. If you need prescription medication, Preventum Skin MD will happily see you with a referral. Patients looking for medical dermatology treatments including mole removals and skin checks require a referral from a family doctor. Dr. Farahani says, “Sometimes moles are cute little beauty marks but other times they are in a place or are of a size that is less beautiful. Some moles can be an ominous sign of skin

18

cancer. Our dermatologist will be happy to see you and give you direction as to your best treatment.” Offering private full-body screenings is very important to the Preventum team. Dr. Farahani comments, “It is our personal value to encourage regular check-ups. Skin cancer prevention is key, and it is becoming more prevalent in younger people.” Dr. Farahani concludes with a smile, “We live locally. We know parents that our kids go to school with. We have been here for eight years and hope to be here for another 30. Preventum Skin MD offers high-quality service for busy families. There is no need to make a trip downtown. We enjoy making people feel good.” Preventum Skin MD 3288 Dunbar Street Vancouver, BC V6S 2B7 Telephone 604-969-8388 www.preventumskin.ca

WEST SIDE PAINT & DECORATING: Why Wallpaper? Submitted by Aisling Ely There are many reasons why people choose to use wallpaper in their homes, and why perhaps it is making such a big comeback! Wallpaper is economical, it can last ten years or more and you can choose a design that’s easy to clean and take care of. Wallpaper is more durable and wipeable now than it was years ago, making it an easy choice for a modern home. It can add interest to your home, showing off your style and vibe. It can add appeal, similar to a work of art (perhaps at a fraction of the cost). Of course it doesn’t need to overwhelm, sometimes simple subtleties speak the loudest. If you like the idea of low impact, you should consider our paintable wallpapers; they add flair and texture, while they can also be tailored to your overall paint colour scheme. It can bring a design theme to life, whether it’s a whimsical guest room, a playful kid’s room or a relaxing Tahitian themed entertainment space. Wallpaper is suitable for any room in your home, even the washroom! Sometimes this can be the best place to start, as it is usually a smaller space and allows you to try out a new 22

design without overwhelming your guests right away if you’re nervous. Here’s a breakdown of some of the different types of wallpaper available: VINYL WALLPAPER: Vinyl based wallpaper is the most popular option in wall coverings due to its versatility. It’s easy to install, easy to remove, and easy to clean SOLID SHEET VINYL: This type of pure vinyl wallpaper is the most durable option because of its thickness, easy cleaning and removal. Solid sheet vinyl is often embossed which adds to the beauty of the print. VINYL COATED FABRIC: Fabric wallpaper is a popular choice because of its natural feel and texture. The vinyl coating gives it a good degree of protection and durability. VINYL COATED PAPER: An upgrade from plain paper wallpaper, vinyl coated paper offers the durability and washability that paper alone simply does not. The vinyl coating allows this type of wallpaper to be a great option for a variety of rooms including high-humidity environments like bathrooms, laundry rooms, and kitchens.

September 1 - November 15, 2020

DunbarLife.com

NON-WOVEN WALLPAPER: Non-woven wallpaper is a completely vinyl free option that’s a great choice if you’re sensitive to environmental considerations. It’s also washable and breathable. So, no need to worry about mold with this wallpaper. It also is very easy to install and remove. It does not tear easily, and it comes off the wall in one long strip. So, if you have some structural work to do with the wall, you can remove the wallpaper and put it back up again when you’re ready.

Wallpaper is something you can DIY, just call in store for our expert tips and all the supplies you need. However, if you prefer to get someone with more experience to hang your wallpaper we have expert wallpaper installation contractors we can refer you too. *The wallpaper we stock is from York and Ontario. It takes approx. 10 days to arrive from day of order. Rolls are sold in one double roll, even though pricing tends to reflect the single roll price.

PREPASTED WALLPAPER: Wallpaper can be one of the types listed above AND be prepasted at the same time. The term "prepasted" just means that you don't need to purchase additional adhesive because it's already on the wallpaper. The glue is dry and just needs to be activated by wetting the back of the paper. GRASSCLOTH WALLPAPER: Grasscloth is a woven, highly textured wallpaper made from purely natural components. Cleaning is a little more difficult with this type of wallpaper. There is a lot of information to be obtained from the symbols on the wallpaper samples, these vary from suitability to a certain room (i.e. lightfastness) to how easy they are to clean (If the wallpaper is not marked by any of the subsequent symbols, it is not advisable to clean the wallpaper using any method). You can find a guide online. DunbarLife.com

FYidoctors:

Making Patient Eye Care a Priority Story by Sarah Gordon

Photos by Carolynne Palla

FYidoctors, formerly Pacific Eye Doctors, has been part of the Dunbar community since 2004. Founding partner optometrists, Dr. Mockler, Dr. McNab, and Dr. Vetsch established their first clinic in Richmond in 1986, and in 2004 opened the Dunbar location. That year Dr. Brooks came on board as a partner to assist with offering excellence in eye care. In 2008, the company joined the larger Fyidoctors group. This has allowed them to continually reinvest in technology in order to provide exceptional eye care. Dr. Brooks says, “The name change reflects our shared belief that patients should come before products and that eye care should always be our primary focus.” She adds, “We are doctorowned and doctor-led.” Dr. Brooks reports, “Dr. Vetsch has retired and Dr. Mockler is semi-retired. In addition to myself and Dr. McNab, we have four associates: 26

Dr. Terynn Chan, Dr. Sarah Hagedorn, Dr. Ashala Mah, and Dr. Russell Tong.”

Last December, FYidoctors moved next to London Drugs. The bright and airy clinic is slightly larger and offers plenty of free parking. FYidoctors continues to offer an extensive range of services including comprehensive eye examinations, management of eye disease, fitting and dispensing of all types of contact lenses, eyewear, and sunglasses. Dr. Brooks says, “We are continually updating our procedures and equipment based on the most recent vision research and science.”

COVID-19 has impacted the way all businesses operate. Dr. Brooks comments, “As doctors, the health of you and your family is our top priority, which is why we have implemented a new examination process with enhanced safety procedures.”

“You can trust us to provide you with comprehensive eye care and peace of mind in a safe clinic environment,” says Dr. Brooks She continues, “We are trying to limit the number of people in the clinic at any time. We are taking appointments for exams, pick up of glasses and contact lenses, and also for any patients who want to look at frames. We have launched a new ‘Virtual Personal Shopping Experience’ that allows you to connect one-on-one with an eyewear consultant, view and virtually try on frames, and make online purchases on our website (www.shop. fyidoctors.com) for those who want to shop from home. Our retail website offers contact lenses, sunglasses, and is expanding to include OTC eye drops, eye vitamins, and dry eye products. We offer curbside pick up of glasses and contact lenses. We also have extended our hours; Monday we are open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturday’s hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., but Tuesday through Friday we are open 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. for the convenience of our patients. We have only one optometrist in at a time, again to limit the number of people in the clinic. We’ve been able to keep our full staff of optometric assistants and dispensing opticians employed through the early stages of the pandemic and as of our reopening in late May.”

Your eye doctor will recommend the frequency of eye examinations (every 6, 12, or 24 months) based on your age, current ocular and general health, as well as your risk of developing eye disease. Dr. Brooks remarks, “We continue to utilize the Optos wide-field retinal imaging, visual field analysis and we have recently added Zeiss OCT retinal imaging (Optical Coherence Tomography). This non-invasive test takes cross-section pictures of the retina. All these instruments continue to improve our ability to diagnose and monitor eye disease including glaucoma, macular degeneration, retinal detachment, diabetes, and hypertension.” Optometrists can diagnose and prescribe prescription medications to treat many common eye disorders and diseases including eye infections, allergies, inflammation, abrasions, and dry eye. FYidoctors’ manufacturing lab in Delta is one of the few left in Canada and is a new ‘stateof-the-art’ facility. It provides 200 Canadian jobs and provides the most technologically advanced lenses at competitive prices.

The busy practice continues to grow and new patients are always welcome. Giving back is important to the Dunbar FYidoctors. They have sponsored the Dunbar Little League since they started the practice, and routinely support local schools with donations.

In addition, FYidoctors has created the ‘Enhancing Life Foundation’, which helps Canadian charities build stronger communities and happier families so that more people can see a brighter future. They also participate in the Better Sight/Better Grades program. This program’s goal is to provide accessible eye care to every child through comprehensive eye exams and corrective eyewear so that all kids can perform to their fullest potential.

28

October is Children’s Vision Month. It is important to have their eyes checked regularly. Provincial eye exam coverage is often available for children under the age of 18, but FYidoctors encourages you to call if you have any questions.

CHAMPION OF DUNBAR Olinda Vriend owned Olindas, a unique ladies clothing store at 4305 Dunbar Street, for 37 years. She is a skilled seamstress and business woman who loves the community of Dunbar. When COVID-19 hit, Olinda got to sewing beautiful masks. She researched how to make the most effective mask and uses three layers. Two of the layers are top quality woven 100% cotton Bali batiks. They have a wire to fit securely around the nose. You can purchase these masks for $10 each from her front porch by appointment. Just send her an email at olindae@shaw.ca The next $1200 raised from mask sales will be donated to EGRC (Educating Girls of Rural China), a charity that Ching Tien started (she also had a business on Dunbar Street for 25 years). This is Olinda’s way of supporting Ching Tien as many of her fundraising events were cancelled due to the pandemic.

The Seeds of Hope Story by Rev’d Stuart Hallam, Rector of St. Philip’s, Dunbar people wonder right now. Queuing outside Stong’s, one woman told me that lockdown had made her question her priorities in life. Her world had become so ‘cluttered’ before the pandemic, never having enough time for her relationships with her partner or their children. Lockdown made her realise how much she loved spending time together as a family, having time to think and to reconnect with nature. What she describes is what Jesus called metanoia – often horribly translated by the Church as repentance; it actually means a conversion of the mind. And she is not the only one who is reimagining life and questioning their priorities. This truly is a time of spiritual renewal for many. During lockdown, the people of St Philip’s were busy making improvements for when the church reopens. We installed an Eco Roof made from recycled car Ares, and a hearingaid loop system in the church so that those with hearing aids will hear services, concerts and events clearly. And we ‘upcycled’ our old pews into beautiful movable pews, enabling us to use the church flexibly, ensure social distancing, and open up our space to a wide range of events, from contemplative services to concerts, plays and exhibitions. A terrific new community resource! Central to this transformation has been our wonderful Verger, Pat Brandon, who many of you may remember as the former manager of Stems at Stong’s. During lockdown, she transformed our spaces: painting, repairing and redesigning. She even replaced carpet with slate in the church aisles, making sanitising much easier: essential in these COVID-19 times. As Pat admits, ‘It has been a hard slog, but a wonderfully creative one and the church looks amazing!’ Pat is a creatve whirlwind! Creativity is a mark of our identity as created beings. We are called to reflect the creativity of God in whose image we are made. At the heart of creativity is the ability to wonder: to reimagine ourselves and our world in a different way. I think COVID-19 is making many 36

Perhaps this explains why we are seeing greater numbers than usual watching our online services as people wonder and reimagine a more spiritual life. In one month alone, we had over 750 views of our worship services on YouTube. We, too, are wondering as COVID-19 makes us think differently about how we are church and how we stay connected. In a world struggling with a pandemic, racial injustice, and the emergency of climate change, it can feel hard to imagine how to bring about positive change. Yet, Jesus constantly taught that positive change is brought about by the spreading of tiny seeds of hope. As the remarkable teenage activist Greta Thunberg reminds us, ‘We do need hope, of course we do. But the one thing we need more than hope is action. Once we start to act, hope is everywhere.’ Whether reconfiguring the church to do new things for the community, or reconnecting deeply with our loved ones, or even wearing a mask to protect others – all are acts of defiant hope and tiny seeds of positive change sown towards a new reimagined normal. Love and prayers to all our friends in Dunbar.
