A Message from DVBA Mysha Dewar-McClelland, President of the Dunbar Village Business Association are pleased to introduce you to Phone Guru, one of Dunbar’s newest businesses. Owner, Meisam Mulla, is the person to turn to when your smartphone or computer is in need of repair.
Welcome to the fall issue of Dunbar Life! The DVBA held another successful Annual General Meeting in June and elected an enthusiastic team to volunteer on this years’ Board of Directors. They are currently working hard to bring the residents of Dunbar our popular Harvest Festival on Saturday, September 8th. This annual event is organized to thank you for supporting our community and local businesses. Harvest Fest is a fun-filled day bringing live music, talented performers, numerous activities and delicious treats to the streets of central Dunbar. There will be new and returning performers this year. See the following pages for the schedule of performers including Ginalina Music, Jacky Essombe, Karima Essa and Peter GG at the Shoppers’ Drug Mart Stage. The DVBA Scavenger Hunt is back! The hunt takes place in all three areas of Dunbar Village but if you want to do a smaller hunt you can concentrate your efforts in just one area. Bring the whole family to see what other great surprises are in store this year at Harvest Fest! Many of us have suffered from shattered screens and waterlogged smartphones. We

Gryphon Museé brings the work of local artists to our community for your enjoyment. The building just closed for renovations and will reopen next spring. Gryphon Development has generously stepped forward to sponsor an art wrap on a utility box in Dunbar Village. The wrap has an anti-graffiti coating, keeping city owned traffic signal control boxes looking great while displaying original art produced by local artists. The DVBA will be wrapping a utility box in the south of Dunbar at West 18th Avenue and Gryphon Development has sponsored the cost of the art wrap for the utility box at Dunbar and West 41st Avenue. On behalf of Dunbar Village businesses, the DVBA would like to thank Gryphon Development for everything they have done in the short time they have had a presence in Dunbar. Phone Guru To the Rescue Story by Sarah Gordon

When technology is running smoothly we tend to take it for granted, but when it breaks down or malfunctions our lives can go into a tailspin. It also opens up another problem – who can we entrust to repair it? Ironically, as I was writing this story the powers that be tested my household; one of my family members’ accidentally dropped a cell phone and the glass cracked. Remarkably, this was a new experience for us. A few weeks earlier we would have been at a loss, but having interviewed Meisam Mulla, one of the owners of Phone Guru, we knew where to go to replace the cracked screen. True to his word, Meisam not only repaired the phone but also turned it around in quick fashion and the phone is as good as new. Phone Guru opened in May 2018. The community is embracing this much-needed service. Currently the business has two locations (the other is in Surrey) and a third 12
shop is scheduled to open at the end of the year.
“To me Dunbar is the real Vancouver. I love everything about this place: the people, the environment and the sense of community.” Meisam Mulla “I feel really welcomed here. I have people dropping by to tell me the services I offer are needed in the area. Phones and computers have become an integral part of life, and electronics need a little TLC from time to time,” he says. Meisam majored in business and is a selftaught software engineer. He ran a consulting firm for eight years and worked www.DunbarLife.com
with small to mid size businesses. His role was to come up with solutions to make business owners’ lives easier through the use of technology. Motivated to try something new, Meisam decided to open his own business. He comments, “I missed helping people and interacting with them on a personal level.” What makes Phone Guru stand out? Meisam mentions, “There are many cell phone repair shops in Vancouver, however, most shops are limited to being able to fix simple issues. At Phone Guru we can repair any type of issue a smartphone has, including repairing the phone’s motherboard. As an example, if you drop your phone in water, Apple would not touch it, even if it were still under warranty. We can actually take the phone apart and in most cases fix the water damage.”
Phone Guru repairs both smartphones and computers. Meisam says, “I have built an extensive network of suppliers and have access to spare parts that other cell phone shops do not have. In fact, some repair shops send me some of the phones they cannot fix.” He adds, “Most customers bring in iPhones and iPads but we have experience working with all types of smartphones. At the core of it, smartphones are just miniature computers. They function almost identically and therefore can be repaired by someone who knows how computers work.”

If your phone isn’t charging or the camera has stopped working, instead of getting a new phone you can get that individual part replaced. He points out Phone Guru uses OEM quality spare parts and includes a one-year warranty with all repairs.

Meisam shares a valuable tip, which is the importance of using a screen protector. Recently a customer came in with a big crack right across the phone’s screen. She thought the screen was broken when it fact the crack was on her screen protector. Meisam saved her a repair bill. He says, “When I told her this, the look of relief on her face actually made my day. We put a new screen protector on her phone and she was on her way.” The top reasons people bring in a computer for repair is because it is either running slowly or it has a virus. Phone Guru can clean up and optimize the computer within the same day in most cases. “If needed, we can upgrade the computer’s hardware and have it running much more quickly for a fraction of what it costs to buy a new one. In fact, I’ve had some customers come back and tell me that they can’t believe how well their 10 year old computer has been running ever since they had me upgrade it,” he says. Choosing to locate Phone Guru in a neighbourbood shopping district aligns with Meisam’s philosophy of supporting independent businesses.

He says, “Small business is the foundation of the Canadian economy and shopping locally has more benefits than is immediately apparent. For instance, 70% of Canadians work for a small business. Supporting small businesses is key to ensuring they remain open and that Canadians stay employed. The personal relationships that you build in the community are a treat on their own. I have gotten to meet so many interesting people running Phone Guru.” Reflecting on his venture, Meisam concludes, “There are two things that make me very happy in life, one is helping people and the other is solving logical problems. With this business I am able to do both and sometimes I feel like I am the luckiest person on earth. The late summer is a time to evaluate successes and areas for improvement in the pollinator garden. Butterflies, bumblebee queens, hover flies and honeybees are active even in autumn. Gardeners can extend the pollinator season with late blooming plants. Other successful plantings include Hyacinths and Muscari, or grape hyacinths.

Inside Gryphon Development’s corporate office (the former Bank of Nova Scotia) at West 41st Avenue and Dunbar Street there is something special going on.

The space contains what you might expect, a showroom for their upcoming projects and offices, but it also includes something not commonly found in a corporate office – an intimate gallery spotlighting the work of local artists for the community to enjoy.
Michelle Lee is Gryphon Development’s corporate marketing manager. She says, “Gryphon is not only in the business of real estate, but also is in the service industry to help create community. We pride ourselves in delivering a way of living, a desire, and a possibility of a more refined lifestyle.”
Gryphon Musée features art that showcases the beauty in everyday life. The gallery was created as a platform for artists to share their inspirations and for audiences to respond with their personal emotions.
For Westbury, Gryphon Development’s first town home project in Vancouver, North Vancouver artist Laura Scaligine was invited to create a painting to complement the beautiful garden. Her painting was originally done in acrylic paint and will be transformed into a large mosaic wall for placement in the Westbury garden when the project completes.

Instead of focusing only on the interior finishes and appliances, these extra artistic elements build a sense of belonging and community for homebuyers. Michelle says, “It is not just a house; it’s your home. It’s where you spend time with your family.”
Architecture has a lasting impact on a community. Gryphon Development believes when art and architecture are put together, the possibilities and benefits are endless. Gryphon Musée is not an art gallery. There is no admission fee and it does not operate for a profit. The gallery is a platform for artists to share their creativity and for audiences to experience their work. It is a space where the public is invited to gather and create community. Some of the company’s happiest moments are when families with children visit Gryphon Musée. The Gryphon Development team are active community participants. They invite the public to come in and tour their office. They have welcomed the Dunbar Village Business Association to hold education seminars at their office. Public events are part of each art exhibition. Local art students are hired to as tour guides to explain both the artists’ backgrounds and their art.

Since its inception, three exhibitions have been mounted in collaboration with the local art community. To date over 1,500 visitors have visited Gryphon Musée. The first exhibit was in conjunction with the North Vancouver Arts Council and their art rental program. It was followed by Urban Landscape, and featured talented local artists Jeff Wilson and Andrew McDermott. The third installation, Every Art Original, featured gifted young artists Fiona Tang and Caitlin Reid.
