A Message from DVBA Karen Wyder, President of the Dunbar Village Business Association Welcome to the fall issue of Dunbar Life magazine! The Dunbar Village Business Association (DVBA) held another successful AGM in June where our volunteer board of Dunbar Village business owners was elected. They will work tirelessly this year to implement initiatives that are important to Dunbar businesses and it is my pleasure to serve again as President. We are busy planning the annual Dunbar Village Harvest Festival and invite you to join us on Saturday, September 19th from 11am to 3pm between W. 26th and W. 30th Avenues on Dunbar Street. This year the DVBA is hosting all of the festivities in the Dunbar Central area and is looking forward to bringing other events to Dunbar North and Dunbar South later in the year. The DVBA is hard at work developing a new website. In the meantime, we have a live landing site where you will find forms and information for Harvest Fest. In this issue of Dunbar Life we feature two long time businesses. This fall Olinda’s will celebrate 35 years selling custom clothing. Olinda is an active supporter of Dunbar Village as a DVBA volunteer Block Captain and as one of Dig Dunbar’s gardeners. Another long time business located in Dunbar North is Gold Star Shoe Rebuilders. Read why they have been many people’s “go-to” shop since 1982. You are probably aware McDermott’s Body Shop has relocated to 8162 Ontario Street in advance of the upcoming demolition of the 4500 block of Dunbar Street. Although change is inevitable, McDermott’s will be missed in the community and by the DVBA as one of its largest supporters. 6

Sian Blyth is Dunbar Life’s latest ‘Champion of Dunbar Village.’ She encourages people to support Dunbar and shop locally. Her interview is also a reminder of how good it feels to form relationships between merchants and customers. An edition of Dunbar Life wouldn’t be complete without Sue Dvorak who entertains readers with a comical back to school article. The DVBA is excited to announce the return of the Dunbar Village Clean Team and is inviting all businesses to become a part of this team. Vancity is the DVBA Clean Team’s first business sponsor to hit the streets. Clayton Ablett, Vancity’s new Branch Manager, explains, “Community relationship building is part of who we are and presents the opportunity to use our convening power to bring people together, creating the space and providing the support that enables relationships to grow and evolve in service of building healthy communities.” Clayton and his employees believe that being part of the Clean Team will allow them to get out into our community and support this important work. There are also plans to bring in other community groups to work with Vancity, so keep an eye out for these amazing contributors who have begun to hit the streets of Dunbar Village. If you are interested in participating or supporting the Clean Team in any way please let the DVBA know at info@dunbarvillage.ca. This fall we encourage you to create a costume and take part in Trick-or-Treat in Dunbar Village on October 24th from 3pm to 5pm. This family friendly DVBA event takes place in all three areas of Dunbar Village. It has become so popular that the DVBA assists merchants with their candy supply to hand out to costumed kids! We wish you a happy autumn and we look forward to seeing you at Harvest Festival and Trick-or-Treat in Dunbar Village.

Gold Star Shoe Rebuilders: Saving Shoes, One Pair at at Time Story by Sarah Gordon

Photos by Sandra Steier

It is comforting to know Gold Star Shoe Rebuilders is still going strong in an age when far too many shoes are poorly constructed, not meant to last and are destined for the landfill. Shayla Heggs, the company’s manager, reports Gold Star is an advocate for sustainable living and is in the business of saving shoes from this fate. There appears to be hope on the horizon. Heggs reports she has seen an increase in 25 to 35 year old clients who are committed to making a difference by helping to save our planet by repairing rather than retiring their footwear. Gold Star was originally located at West 26th Avenue and Dunbar Street but moved to the corner of West 17th Avenue and Dunbar Street when its original location was demolished. She has been with the company for 13 years, 8

which has been under its current ownership since 1982.

She recommends investing in quality shoes and treating them with tender loving care. Allen Edmonds, Cydwoq, Bostonian, Frye and Red Wing work boots are all reputable brands. With a few simple steps, namely basic cleaning, conditioning (with special lotions or creams), shining, waterproofing and the use of a cedar shoe tree, footwear can go the extra mile. All of the products required to keep footwear shining and in tiptop condition are sold at the store and the staff are happy to teach customers how to use them.

www.DunbarLife.com | September 1 - November 15, 2015

Breathing new life into rock climbing and hiking boots, and even Birkenstocks, is Gold Star’s speciality. Have no fear, if you have a pair of casual or dress shoes they can be mended too. Hikers account for a large part of their customer base; in fact, people have been known to mail their boots from Nova Scotia and Toronto for repair. Their business has built largely through word of mouth and social media. Repair shops are few and far between and Gold Star goes the extra mile with their specialized refurbishing of heavy-duty footwear. Behind the scenes, the cobblers work with a factory style press. Few shops offer this service, as they have not invested in this specialized equipment. Heggs trained alongside the repair department and can be seen hard at work

sewing, patching, installing zippers, polishing and cleaning, in addition to her daily work as the store’s manager.

Over the years she has helped grow the retail end of the business. At Gold Star you will find insoles, polish, laces (including a big selection of hiking boot laces), leather dyes and socks. American made Spenco insoles are available for walkers and runners. German made Sportiv Plus insoles come in different varieties for extra cushioning. Made in Vermont, Darn Tough Merino wool socks come in a variety of fun colours and styles. They are known for being both sweat wicking and breathable. Bonus: Darn Tough socks are guaranteed for life. If they are not the most comfortable, durable and best fitting socks you have ever owned, return them to Darn Tough for another pair, or get your money back.

supporting Gold Star Shoe Rebuilders since 1982.

During the spring hiking boots, climbing boots and sandals are frequently brought in for servicing. The quieter summer months are a perfect time to get a head start on anticipating fall footwear repairs, so make hay while the sun shines and beat the autumn rush. September and October is a busy time for back to school repairs and weatherproofing goes into full gear. With a number of private schools in the neighbourhood there are many leather shoes in for servicing, along with fashion boots, which are steady in the fall and winter months.

Heggs wants to inspire people to purchase quality shoes with leather bottoms and good heels. These are repairable and will last you a long time. She says, “We can learn a lot from seniors, like my Nana who saved and cared for many of her possessions. We need to continue to pass on these values to our children.”

Some exceptionally loyal customers, in particular seniors and hikers, have been

10

What does Heggs find most rewarding about her work? She likes seeing the expression on clients’ faces when they are reunited with their shoes, and hearing them say the shoes look even better than they expected.

McDermott’s Body Shop: A Community Legacy Moves On Story by Sarah Gordon

Photos by Sandra Steier and submitted

It is with mixed emotions that McDermott’s Body Shop owners Tony Ciccozzi and his business partner/brother-in-law, Terry Hartree, have bid Dunbar Street adieu. This past summer, after 65 years of serving the community, McDermott’s relocated to 8162 Ontario Street (off of S.W. Marine Drive) in advance of the upcoming demolition of the 4500 block of Dunbar Street. McDermott’s has always been a part of Tony Ciccozzi’s life. His father, Harry Ciccozzi, was associated with the body shop for 52 years. He was McDermott’s first employee and eventually purchased the business from Noel “Mac” McDermott. Tony Ciccozzi joined the business in 1974. In 1985 he left to work at ICBC but returned in 2002 when his father passed away.

to make your “baby” look as good as new. Clients will be pleased to know the entire McDermott’s team (which has now expanded), including Coco the chocolate Labrador, are all on-site at the Ontario Street body shop and are eager to welcome familiar Dunbar faces through the door. Tony Ciccozzi says, “The Dunbar community has been great for us.” At the same time he is realistic about how the neighbourhood is rapidly evolving and a body shop in the middle of the business district is no longer well situated. If it is not convenient for you to drop off your at McDermott’s they are happy to offer clients their ICBC valet service. They will come to your house and pick up your car.

Saying goodbye to Dunbar is filled with bittersweet memories; however, Tony Ciccozzi is excited about the much bigger space to better serve his customers.

McDermott’s commitment to sponsoring the Dunbar Little League will also continue. “Dunbar will always be a part of our roots,” Tony Ciccozzi says.

The Dunbar body shop could only take five cars at a time whereas the new location can accommodate 20 vehicles. The same collision repair services continue to be offered but on a much larger scale, including two spray booths

He believes his father would be very proud to see how the little body shop that opened in 1950 has grown. The entire McDermott’s team wishes to thank Dunbar for 65 years of wonderful memories.

Top Bark Mulch Quotes from Gardening Authors “Mulch. If you do nothing more, if you learn nothing else from this book, I hope you learn that mulch is the key in our modern soils to creating and maintaining a great garden. A 7-cm layer of mulch will reduce your weeding and work by 80 percent; a 10-cm layer will bring that labour-saving into the mid-90 percent range. And the decaying mulch adds the necessary organic matter that makes your soil better.” Douglas Green, Guide To Canadian Vegetable Gardening. Cool Springs Press, 2009.

“Mulch is a marvelous material that makes life easier for the average gardener. Surprisingly, many people don’t use mulch despite its benefits…Organic mulch creates a barrier that reduces surface evaporation and keeps new weeds from sprouting. Mulch also insulates plant roots from temperature fluctuations. In summer, a layer of mulch cools the soil, promoting root growth.” Brian Minter, Brian Minter’s New Gardening Guide: Fresh Approaches for American Gardeners. Whitecap Books, 1998.

Mulch Goes Beyond Topdressing During a recent call-in on BC Almanac with Brian Minter on the CBC, a caller asked about planting during these dry months. Minter suggested putting mulch right into the planting area. The mulch will hold moisture in the root zone. Minter says, “I’d love to see a very open porous soil, taking a fir or hemlock bark mulch and working it in into your soil because not only does it retain moisture but you want a fine mulch because it does dry the roots out. It makes a huge difference. “ Jessica Salvador is a Certified Landscape Horticulturist. She runs Higher Ground Gardens with her husband Christian, a Certified Landscape Technician. 14

Olinda’s:

Locally Made Classic and Contemporary Clothing Story by Sarah Gordon

Photos by Sandra Steier

Olinda Vriend has been operating her shop in central Dunbar for 35 years. The store was previously called Bobby’s Place and Vriend worked there for two years. She loved her job so much that she purchased the business when it came up for sale. The company’s name changed to Olinda’s but retained the successful concept of retailing cottage industry clothing.

Vriend is a charming and warm natured proprietor. It is evident after 35 years she remains excited about her business. She says, “It was a real stroke of good fortune to end up on Dunbar.” She is the daughter of Dutch immigrants who raised their family in Houston, B.C. Her

20

parents were sponsored to move to Canada following World War II. Vriend reports it was traumatic for her mother to relocate from Holland to a small town in B.C.’s northern interior. How did a Dutch family end up naming their daughter Olinda? “Olinda is a Portuguese name my parents came across in a book of baby names,” she says with a laugh. She thanks her mother, who was briefly a professional seamstress, for nurturing her love of sewing. Two local seamstresses make approximately fifty percent of Olinda’s exclusive line. Both women have been employed by Olinda’s for twenty years. Fabric is cut in the back room of the shop and this is also where some of the pattern design occurs. Once cutting is complete the fabric is sent out for sewing.

www.DunbarLife.com | September 1 - November 15, 2015

Olinda’s line is a real draw for customers with its selection of classic and contemporary styles. Vriend says, “It is important to keep things lively and exciting. At the same time I hear from my customers that classics are a key part of their wardrobes, therefore balance is essential.” The beauty of clothing designed in store is the ability to accommodate customers from sizes 0 to 24. From working professionals to seniors, a wide range of women shop at Olinda’s. Speak up if you spot something at Olinda’s that catches your eye, even if is not available in your size. Not only can they custom make the chosen piece, you can also select from a variety of fabrics offered.

be long before the warm, sun-filled season marches on, the weather turns crisp and the holiday season approaches. Olinda’s two-piece flannel pyjamas are a very popular gift. One year a farming family commissioned a special order of “Old MacDonald” PJs as Christmas presents for three generations. Fabric bolts currently in store include cupcakes, clouds, sheep, colourful geometrics and many more. Part of the pleasure is browsing through the bolts, or looking at some of the premade PJs for inspiration, and then placing an order. While Olinda’s is a women’s clothing boutique, pyjamas for both genders, and all ages, are the exception to the rule (along with custom made men’s nightshirts).

Local clients are eager to support businesses in their community. Customers also come from as far afield as the United States and Europe, and report a visit to Olinda’s is one of the highlights of their visit to Vancouver. Dresses, skirts, shirts and sundresses are very popular in the summer; however, it won’t www.DunbarLife.com | September 1 - November 15, 2015

Customers appreciate Olinda’s personal service. The option to order made to fit clothing is a shopper’s dream come true, and is a very easy way to purchase garments. A sewing machine sits near the cash desk as any item bought at Olinda’s can be altered. In addition to Olinda’s own label, the store also carries French Dressing Jeans (designed in Canada), Canadian made Yoga Jeans and Tribal with a nice assortment of knit tops and bamboo cotton knits. Parkhurst Knitwear is a respected 100-year-old Canadian company known for its sweaters and cardigans from classic to a bit more trendy. Vriend is committed to assisting a number of charities. She says, “It is important for me to find a way to be of service. I derive pleasure from it. Looking after others means a lot to

me.” She funds one student’s education each year through the charity Educating Girls in Rural China. In addition, Olinda’s has been involved with fashion shows to aid those with osteoporosis, and she has personally donated to Seva Canada Charity for many years.” It makes me feel good and that is what matters at the end of the day,” she says. “I love what I do for a living and I like to give back,” Vriend concludes. Customers concur this unique business is driven by originality and passion. Olinda’s 4305 Dunbar Street Vancouver, BC V6S 2G2 604-228-0022

SCHOOL DAZE Story by Sue Dvorak School days are upon us again. For those with children “back to school” is marked by the start up of endless routines that, though lacking spontaneity, allow for family survival. Routines are not the stuff of action thrillers but necessary in avoiding chaos or freak-outs, from parent or child. Take for example the simple routine of where to throw, hang, or stow your student’s backpack every day upon arrival home. Could a backpack actually go missing in the house? Yes. Besides, the routine of putting the backpack somewhere specific helps identify when it is missing, as in, left on the playground. In the rain. Overnight. With the paper mâché mask project inside. A routine of some urgency is that of the child removing the lunch bag from the backpack each evening. For days this task will seem of little consequence until it is forgotten, for example before a long weekend or spring break, leaving a granola yogurt mixture having spilled from its container, fermenting into a stomach-churning stew in said backpack. Kids: go get the lunch bag. Even in this digital era, an unreal number of school notices, permission forms, letters and schedules will arrive from school. These papers require attention, often your signature or volunteering or simply your awareness 28

of their contents. This paper management too requires a routine so that you actually sign the Aquarium field trip permission form and do find out your child’s volleyball team uniform is missing. Ideally another routine will ensure the information on all the papers is recorded into the family calendar. This will theoretically prevent you from getting a call some afternoon asking if you are on your way to pick your child up at the cross-country meet in Richmond. And you are not.

Then there are school lunches, the routine bemoaned as a test of parental endurance. Even if your kids make their own lunches there is always the question of what to put in them. If you are one of those high-achievers who send organic blueberries in wee containers accompanied by a small veggie platter with homemade hummus dip then bless you. If you are a parent whose kid “doesn’t like sandwiches” well, bless you even more! Our family always starts out with the best of intentions, of creative wraps and hot food in thermoses. But over time we creep back to a standard-issue ‘set lunch.’ Our kids take turns making lunches for everybody. “Sibling pressure” is the natural mechanism that helps

www.DunbarLife.com | September 1 - November 15, 2015

ensure the lunches are good: if you make a terrible lunch you are going to hear about it. The threat of this reprimand is still worth it on occasion when a younger brother “punishes” an older brother for some grievance by packing him a lunch of a single-slice-ofcucumber sandwich and a lime. But love it or hate it, the ultimate test of endurance for many parents is overseeing the routine of homework. Why is it that the likelihood that a parent is at wit’s end after a crazy, exhausting day is directly correlated with the likelihood that their child will be frustrated, irritated and completely stuck on homework that same day? Family harmony is rarely the result. Once again, a homework routine is part of the answer: a location, time and approach that is non-negotiable and minimizes dramatics. Get it done and move on to something else. However, if the homework routine starts to involve the parent pounding back a few stiff drinks, then the time for outside help has arrived. Which brings us to the routine of school projects. Your child will usually remember that she has a project due as you tuck her into bed late one evening. Half of the people wandering around pharmacies late

at night are parents searching for poster board and glitter glue. Here’s a stellar tip regarding school projects: never help. Just smile encouragingly and let your kids go at it. Yes, your child’s miniature factory made using a Kleenex box, jar lids, popsicle sticks streaked with chocolate and a lot of tin foil will fall short of the solar-powered factory with moving mechanical parts that her peer might bring in. Your son’s original poem might actually be quite terrible. Your daughter’s artwork may in no way resemble the assigned subject. However allowing your student to do projects himself will help ensure that in ten years time you will not need to move into the tiny university residence dorm room with that same student to keep the projects going.

You already went to school: this is their turn. We have all been convinced that the routine of “back-to-school shopping” is absolutely necessary. Luckily for retailers nobody ever points out that, really, clothes and stuff can be bought anytime. For parents this imposed timing of “getting things for the new school year” can initiate an exciting challenge into our routine-dulled lives of “having things last the school year,” come hell or high water. Our daughter finished out the final weeks of school triumphantly, though not fashionably, wearing duct-taped shoes. (Helpful note: tie-up shoes become slip-ons when you encircle them in black electrical tape because the sole is falling off. Just so you know.) Our high school son had a yearend gathering at our house after which I discovered two boys’ dress shoes. When I suggested a couple of boys had left a shoe behind my son answered “No, those are both Ben’s. His shoes haven’t matched for a while.” Now that’s impressive! So get your kids out there and see how well you do with “making things last!” Another helpful tip: three layered hoodies equals one lost winter coat. Good luck with the routines. School days seem to last forever but the whole childhood thing goes by quickly. Make the most of it all. In the words of my funny father, “Grade 4! The best two years of my life!”

A Champion of Dunbar Village: Sian Blyth Story by Sarah Gordon Sian Blyth is a Dunbar resident who moved to Canada in 1998 from her native England. Unfamiliar with the neighbourhoods of Vancouver when she and her husband arrived, they explored the city and determined Dunbar was the place to raise their future family. Blyth quickly realized Dunbar was very much akin to Cranleigh, England, the village where she grew up. She says, “It reminds me of a British High Street where you can walk to the shops and the villagers know almost everyone.” When her son was born Blyth frequently took him out for walks in his stroller and became aware how readily people would engage in conversation. She confesses with a smile, “It can take a while to get anywhere because I like to stop and talk.” She says, “My kids spent many hours at the Dunbar Community Centre and we formed a network of friends there.” From children’s programs to the playground, visits to the gym and yoga classes, it has offered so much for her family. They also spent many happy hours at Chaldecott Park’s water park and playground.

Blyth is extremely committed to patronizing the three shopping districts that compromise Dunbar Village. At the north end she is a supporter of Dunbar Greetings, her family enjoys take out from Kuma Sushi and she visits Blight’s Home Hardware for many of her household needs. She mentions that her family shops at Dunbar Lumber and says, ”Half of our house came from there.” She gets her shoes mended at Gold Star Shoe Rebuilders and Domino’s Pizza never goes amiss in a house with a teenager.

I have spent thousands of dollars at Splash Toy Shop.” She also loved Bean Town Coffee House and Carson Books, all which have closed or relocated after that block of Dunbar was recently demolished. In the traditional British style of shopping almost daily for fruit and vegetables, she likes to visit Dunbar Produce to stock up. She frequents many other stores and services including Money’s Dry Cleaning (with its friendly staff), Shoppers Drug Mart, her kids enjoy riding their bikes to Mac’s for frosters, the Dunbar Library is a favourite (especially when her children participated in the summer reading club), and even the family cat, Katy, gets involved with occasional visits to Alta Vista Animal Hospital. One of Blyth’s favourite new haunts is Hungry Dog Cafe. She says Kokopelli Cafe was a lifesaver as a young mum and she still pops in there for coffee and occasional frozen dinners. Stong’s Market is her favourite place to purchase fish, meat and deli products and she loves the friendly and personal service. It is not only a great place to find grocery items but also to run into friends. In the south end of Dunbar Blaq Sheep Coffee House & Bistro is a go-to for java, and Blyth laughs when she admits the Village VQA Wines staff know her by name.

By sharing her story she hopes to encourage people to support the neighbourhood. Blyth suggests, ”Leave your car and walk to the stores to discover what businesses line the street.” Take time to explore and get to know the merchants and form relationships with them. “Dunbar is a fun place for families. It is a lovely neighbourhood and it is a privileged place to live.”

In central Dunbar Blyth says, “Over the years 32
