Her story is one of perseverance and never giving up on a dream. Norm Chen, owner of YNP Pharmacy, opened the community’s newest independent pharmacy at the corner of 26th and Dunbar. Norm Cheng has worked for over thirty years with some of Vancouver’s largest drug and grocery stores. Be sure to read our new Ask An Expert feature where you will hear straight from community pros on various topics. We will expand this feature in the next issue of Dunbar Life - let us know if you have a question for any of our business owners! VY Valentin Salon: Driven by a Passion For Hair Story by Sarah Gordon

Photos by Sandra Steier

The VY in front of Valentin Salon’s name stands for Valentin Yersian who is the charming owner of this Dunbar business. Valentin worked extremely hard to get to the point where she was able to open her own hair salon in 2012. Her story is one of perseverance and never giving up on a dream.

For as long as Valentin can remember she has loved hair. She recalls at age twelve cutting her mother’s hair with the assistance of her sisters who are also hair stylists. She easily obtained her stylist credentials in her homeland of Iran and began working. Her sisters left the country for a new life in the United States and 12

Valentin hoped to follow them, however she encountered difficulties applying for a visa. Not wishing to return to Iran, and still unable to obtain a visa, she lived in a number of European countries, however her stylist credentials were not accepted. She ended up in Spain where she learnt the language and worked long hours as a nanny to save up for her European cosmetology credentials. After receiving her license she was able to return to her passion and worked in a salon for five years but she still longed to be reunited with her sisters.

Valentin arrived in Vancouver with $50 in her pocket and she did not speak English.

www.DunbarLife.com | November 15, 2017 - February 15, 2018

With nothing to lose, Valentin immigrated to Canada so she would be closer to the United States. She describes her arrival at Vancouver International Airport in 1998 like it was yesterday, and with good reason, it was a life changer. It was the wee hours of the night and the airport was virtually abandoned when a kind gentleman offered to help her make a phone call to find accommodation. Serendipitously, he also spoke Armenian and introduced Valentin to his family and friends; six years later they wed. Once again Valentin was faced with looking for work as a hair stylist and not having her credentials recognized. Through her church she found a job caring for an elderly woman. What was originally a short-term job evolved into a long-term position, which gave her time to learn English, establish permanent residency in Canada and enabled her to enrol in a cosmetology program. Once she had completed the program she

faced another obstacle, she was now overqualified for many jobs. Not to be deterred from her passion, she kept searching until she found a job at Vida Beautilities in Dunbar. The two hair stylists connected and Valentin was delighted to be working again in the profession she had missed so much. When the time came that Vida wanted to sell her business Valentin purchased it. For four years she operated the salon in its original location a few doors down from its new home, which opened in July 2017. After an extensive renovation Valentin is thrilled with the results and is thoroughly enjoying the nice bright space. When she first opened her salon in 2013 she depended on word of mouth to build her client base. Today she has extremely loyal clients who come from near and far to get haircuts and colour. In addition, Valentin is trained in microblading eyebrows and permanent eyeliner.

She has given babies their first haircuts and has cut hair for three generations of family members. Valentin treasures her client relationships and has formed some very good friendships. She says, “It’s not only about hair, I learn about life from them.” The generosity of her clients is limitless. People have been known to bring her cake, bread, jam, homemade wine or gifts when they return from a vacation. She is touched by their thoughtfulness and says, “You can’t buy this kindness. I have so many caring and loving clients. I am so lucky.”

“We cry together, we laugh together and in some cases we inspire each other.” Valentin Yersian Valentin enjoys giving back by volunteering her talent as a hair stylist. She has participated in a number of fashion shows with her friend (and former Dunbar business owner) Chloe Angus who is a clothing designer. They also worked together for six years at the Leo Awards, which honours

14

B.C.’s film and television industry. This vivacious business owner is a great example of never giving up. Her motto is, “Dream big, stay positive, work hard and enjoy the journey.” Clients regularly hug her because they are thrilled with their transformation and this warms her heart. Valentin concludes, “I have a passion and love my work. I am in love with hair.” VY Valentin Salon 4290 Dunbar Street Vancouver, BC V6S 2E9 Telephone 604-732-3523 www.vyvalentinsalon.com

Baseball After Little League Vancouver Community Baseball (VCB) has been an active non-profit baseball organization since 1994 and their mandate is to provide an opportunity for teenagers of both genders to play baseball at all levels. Vancouver Community Baseball’s teams play their home games at Chaldecott Park, Hillcrest Park and Trafalgar Park. These local parks are integral to creating and maintaining our “community” feel. Vancouver Community Baseball relies heavily on our volunteer and sponsorship support. The league has several volunteers who continue to actively participate long after their children have aged out of their baseball years! The league also has long time local sponsors who provide their support to ensure that the players have the opportunity to play baseball locally. We sincerely thank our sponsors. This past year saw the league’s Pee Wee AAA and Bantam A teams win Provincial Championships. These wins bring the league’s overall total to 20 Provincial, Western and National Championship titles. VCB’s parent association is B.C. Baseball (www.bcminorbaseball.org) the largest baseball organization in B.C., with over 16,500 registered players. VCB has 3 age tiers of play; Peewee 12-13, Bantam 14-15 and Midget 16-18. Eligibility falls within the calendar year, from January 1st to December 31st. In 2019, Little League Canada will be lowering the current maximum age of eligibility from 13 to 12. VCB is anticipating this change and is prepared to welcome the influx of players from District 1 into our Peewee division playing out of Chaldecott Park. District 1 includes players from Dunbar LL, Jericho LL, Kerrisdale LL and Little Mountain LL. What VCB is most proud of is that our youth continue to enjoy playing baseball, after their Little League days - and that we develop, “a sense of belonging to our community” through the great game of baseball.

Registration for the new season begins January 1, 2018 through the website www.vancouvercommunitybaseball.com Have a great winter ahead and we look forward to seeing you all in 2018.

Let’s play ball! 16

YNP Dunbar Pharmacy:

Your Neighbourhood Pharmacy Story by Sarah Gordon

Photos by Sandra Steier

YNP Dunbar Pharmacy is the community’s new independent pharmacy. Owner Norm Cheng has worked for over 30 years with some of Vancouver’s largest drug and grocery stores.

Urban Fare. After many years of dedication where he won awards for his work, Norm reached a crossroad. He realized that although his job was fulfilling it was time for a new challenge.

Norm was born and raised in the small town of Lillooet (nicknamed ‘B.C.’s Little Nugget’) where his family owned a restaurant called The Royal Cafe. In 1973 the family relocated to Vancouver. When the time came for Norm to attend university he wasn’t sure which direction he would head; he considered engineering, and he was also attracted to medicine and business, however his path led to pharmacy. He earned his degree at UBC.

He heard through the grapevine that a Dunbar pharmacy was for sale and decided it was a golden opportunity to branch out as an independent pharmacist. Not many independent pharmacies remain and Norm has learnt the reward of being self-employed is getting to make his own decisions. He says, “The harder you work the more rewards you get.”

Thinking back to his childhood, Norm recalls the drugstore pharmacist in Lillooet and thinking that was a practical and stable career choice. After completing his degree Norm applied for a job in Prince Rupert. While he had never been there he thought the job interview would be a valuable experience. He smiles when he reports being hired on the spot and spending two years in the beautiful but often rainy port city. He returned to the Lower Mainland where he gained valuable experience working as a pharmacist at Shoppers Drug Mart and a pharmacy manager at Save-On-Foods and 18

YNP opened in April 2017. Norm is enjoying getting established in the community. The small pharmacy offers competitive prices and value. Norm says, “By focussing on professional and friendly service people will gravitate to his friendly little pharmacy.” In the short time YNP has been open Norm has begun to build relationships with clients who he gets to know by name. He points out this makes small businesses unique and he enjoys it very much.

“Pharmacy is a health and people business. It’s the people that keep my days interesting.” Norm Cheng YNP offers in store compounding, and also provides blister packing at no extra charge to help simplify things for clients who are taking multiple medications. The pharmacy sells vitamins and other health products and Norm is happy to bring in products if he doesn’t happen to carry them. As well, YNP provides advice and supplies on flight and medical compression stockings, supports and orthoses, and is authorized and trained to provide custom-fit service and sales of the Bauerfeind line. We have reached that time of the year that people dread – flu season. The key months to get the flu shot is from October through to January or later and people at high risk for serious illness from the flu including young children, pregnant women, the elderly, and people with certain medical conditions should be vaccinated. Norm reminds readers that a means of spreading infection is through the hands, which may end up touching your nose, mouth or eyes. Therefore he reminds people to hand wash regularly. He also mentions certain publicly funded vaccinations are available free of charge to eligible patients.

enjoying this neighbourhood. Reflecting on other areas Norm has worked he says, “Dunbar is much more of a community.” He is enjoying the community spirit and has already participated in Dunbar Village Business Association events such as Salmonberry Days and the Harvest Festival. Be sure to drop in and say hello to your friendly neighbourhood pharmacist who is ready to assist you with his warm, personal service – and hopefully play a role in keeping the flu virus at bay this winter!

YNP offers a helpful immunization checklist for adults to assist with preventative healthcare.

The shingles vaccine is another important vaccination for those who are 50 years of age and older. One subcutaneous injection of the shingles vaccine may help protect you from getting this potentially painful and possibly serious skin rash. www.HigherGroundGardens.com What You Need To Know About Winterizing Your Landscape There is no getting away from it, preparing your garden for winter is all about “down to earth” work, but it also gives you a chance to reflect back on what did or did not work in your garden during the season. The adage “pay now or pay later” applies perfectly to fall gardening. The work you do now will make your garden much easier to care for come spring.

Garden Beds Cut back perennials to a height of one inch above ground level. Thoroughly weed by hand all areas of the garden, doing your best to remove all roots. Rake out the beds to prepare for mulching. Using an edging tool, cut out a tidy lawn edge. Push back the soil that sits against the lawn edge to create a defined look.

Trim and prune hedges and shrubs for winter Fall is a good time of year to shape and trim your shrubs and hedges as they will hold their shape for many months. Remember, if you have any fruit trees, that they get pruned back in the middle of winter to encourage fruit production.

Mulch for Protection Covering the garden beds with decomposed mulch is by far the best money you can spend in your garden. It naturally enriches the soil, reduces weeds, keeps moisture in the soil during the summer and looks great. Have the mulch delivered and shovel it around your garden to a depth of 2” or 3” thick.

Jessica Salvador is a Certified Landscape Horticulturist. Higher Ground Gardens is a family run business she owns with her husband Christian Kessner, a certified landscape technician. 24

DUNBAR LIFE: Ask An Expert: How does Invisalign® treatment work? Invisalign® clear aligners are custom-made for you. The aligners are virtually invisible and fit snugly over your teeth. Each aligner shifts your teeth slightly, moving them horizontally and vertically and even rotating them when needed. Your aligners are engineered to use the right amount of force in the right place at the right time. When you change to the next set of aligners (typically every week) your teeth gradually move into position, following a custom treatment plan mapped out by your doctor.

DUNBAR LIFE: Ask An Expert: What are floaters?

Small floaters are caused by normal changes to the gel of the eye, called the vitreous. As you age, the gel shifts to a more liquid state, and collagen fibers clump together and cast shadows on the retina. That’s why you’ll notice them more when looking at a bright background (like when riding the chairlift on a bluebird day). Larger cobweb-like floaters, a sudden increase in the amount of floaters or flashing lights is more concerning. These can be signs that the vitreous has pulled away from the retina, causing a posterior vitreous detachment (PVD). Dr. Ashala Mah, Optometrist PVDs are quite common, in fact 60% of 60 year olds will get them, and if it happens in one eye, it is very likely to happen in the fellow eye. The larger floaters from PVDs 4292 Dunbar Street often break up or shrink, and your brain won’t notice Vancouver, BC V6S 2E9 them as often. It’s very important to see an optometrist 604-739-2022 when you notice new floaters. At FYi-Doctors, our ashala.mah@fyidoctors.com comprehensive eye exams include a thorough dilated www.fyidoctors.com examination and a 200-degree Optomap retinal photo. These help detect floaters, PVDs, retinal holes, tears or detachments. Although rare, some PVDs can tug on the retina, causing a retinal tear. If that occurs, prompt detection is key, as it needs to be treated right away!

DUNBAR LIFE: Ask An Expert: Why should I learn self defence?

The honest answer - no one cares more about your safety and the well-being of your body than you do. Learning self-defence will benefit you both mentally and physically. Even if you never attend any physical self-defence training, you can make yourself a hard target by practicing these key tactics: listen to your instincts, hone your environmental awareness, and walk with confidence. Present yourself to the world as someone who will fight back with everything you have to get home safe and sound. The most common thing we hear from our students is that the techniques we teach are simple, effective and they make sense. We discuss and simulate real life scenarios to help prepare you for what could be the fight of your life. Focus on what you are fighting for; not just yourself but your family, friends, pets and job! Even having practiced a handful of effective and useful escapes can give you the knowledge and confidence you need to survive a threatening situation with a high probability of success. This is one of the reasons why learning self-defence is such an empowering experience regardless of your age, size, strength or gender.

DUNBAR LIFE: Ask An Expert: Do people still have funerals, and if so, what is the purpose of them?

Funerals have been around forever, and are still just as important today. In order to understand why we still have funerals, it is important to understand what happens when we face the loss of a loved one. Loss sets grief into motion, and with it, feelings such as sadness and anger. We express our grief through mourning. Some examples of mourning are crying, talking about the death, and most importantly, having a funeral. Funerals allow us to openly express our grief, in the comforting presence of others. When we gather for a funeral we honour the deceased by bringing together each unique relationship our loved one once had, helping one another to a place where the sharp edges of the pain of grief are softened, and replaced with loving memories. Funerals don’t have to be traditional, and although there is still room for tradition, many people are searching for something more unique. Martin Brothers Funeral Services is a custom funeral provider, offering funerals reflective of individual taste and style. Most importantly, we create services that provide family and friends a time to gather and mourn. www.DunbarLife.com | November 15, 2017 - February 15, 2018
