It has been a beautiful fall season and now there is a noticeable chill in the air and thoughts turn to the upcoming holiday season as we bundle up or spend more time indoors. This year we can look forward to more time gathering and celebrating with friends and family. Tradition is often a large part of the holidays and we hope that Dunbar Village makes your list of traditions this year by choosing to shop local. Inside this issue you will find the Dunbar Gift Guide that offers so many wonderful giving ideas. Dunbar’s merchants have unique offerings and they are very much looking forward to your support - and your presence this holiday season. We are happy to announce that Dunbar Village for the Holidays is coming back this year and in a brand new way. Santa will be coming to town! The jolly old elf will be ‘setting up shop’ in Dunbar Village on Saturday, December 11th and again on December 18th from 10am - 2pm. Pink Elephant Cafe offers
delicious hot and cold grab-and-go Thai food, baked goods and great coffee, while Urban Thai Bistro is the perfect place to meet friends for a dine-in meal with drinks. Make sure to read about Thirstyyy, Dunbar’s new Asian convenience store located at 3378 Dunbar Street. The shop is based on a condensed version of FamilyMart found everywhere in Japan and Asia. Thirstyyy carries imported food, health, and beauty products. Meanwhile, please welcome Chicko Chicken, the new Korean fried chicken restaurant now open at 3336 Dunbar Street. Also, we want to welcome Dr. Turban, owner of DunMed Medical Clinic that opened across the street at 3393 Dunbar Street. We are happy to have Alisa Stephenson open her Alma Home & Vintage store at 4315 Dunbar Street. On a personal note, I would like to take a moment to thank Dunbar Village for its wonderful support over the past few years while I have happily filled the role of DVBA President. PINK ELEPHANT CAFE & URBAN THAI BISTRO: Two New Restaurants for Dunbar Story by Sarah Gordon

When one door closes, two doors open. Desmond Chen has once again expanded his restaurant portfolio, and this time Dunbar is the lucky neighbourhood to gain two new dining establishments. When Q Coffee was for sale, Desmond saw an opportunity to expand into the community with Pink Elephant Cafe and Urban Thai Bistro. He saw potential with all the new construction taking place in the area as well as a shortage of vibrant restaurants in Dunbar South. Pink Elephant Cafe is a cheerful space with blush pink and grey décor. It opened for business in late July 2021 and welcomes customers daily from 7:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. 8
Desmond was aware that former Q Coffee customers were huge fans of the locally roasted coffee beans. He says, “Why change something that’s doing well?” His vision was to improve the overall experience—he reimagined the floor plan to become two separate restaurants with a shared kitchen. Desmond says, “There has been tremendous response from Dunbar and neighbouring Kerrisdale residents, construction workers, bus drivers, UBC students, and kids’ sports teams. People stop in to take home quick dinners, parents pick up coffee by the jug for hockey parents, and golfers like to grab their lunch before a round or for post-golf dinners.”

Pink Elephant Cafe is Dunbar’s new destination for hot and cold grab-and-go Thai food. A giant food warmer is stocked with hot fried rice, noodles, curry, and rice entrees. A cold cooler houses papaya salads, steak salads, and the popular Thai mango salad. Beer and wine are also served. “The Thai mango salad is a customer favourite. It is usually sold out by 1:00 p.m. The prawn fried rice is also extremely popular along with our red curry chicken and rice,” says Desmond. The menu also features soups, fresh baked goods daily, smoothies (which are a big hit with kids), and that oh-so memorable java. While the concept is grab-and-go, there are also tables to dine in for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.
Urban Thai Bistro opened on September 2, 2021. It is open for lunch, dinner, takeout, or delivery. The décor is a fusion of traditional Thai meets modern, resulting in an exotic interior with teal walls and punches of gold and black—it is a

cozy spot to gather with family and friends for a meal and drinks. Urban Thai Bistro’s signature dishes include three flavoured black cod, jumbo XL size tiger prawns in a garlic sauce, and Matsaman curry rack of lamb which Desmond says is sensational. Other popular picks include Pad

Thai, and appetizers such as prawn ceviche, pork cheeks, and Thai chicken wings. Salads include Som Tom papaya, Thai prawn salad, and mango salad. Duck noodle soup made with a house-made broth will warm you up on cool-weather days as will the flavourful Thai curries. Also noteworthy, Urban Thai Bistro doubles as a wine bar, offering many Asian-inspired cocktails and martinis. Desmond mentions that they have added takeout and delivery to both restaurants through Uber Eats, DoorDash, and Skip the Dishes. They have been overwhelmed with the demand for takeout and decided to add an online ordering app that can be found at the Apple and Android stores. It is Desmond’s hope to eventually expand one or both concepts into Kerrisdale where he resides. He was looking at two properties in 2020 and again earlier this year but held off due to the pandemic. Desmond’s father, Patrick Chen, was a pioneer in the Asian restaurant industry. He founded the well-recognized Thai House restaurant in 1986, which is where Desmond got his start. By age 13 he was lending a hand at the family business working in the kitchen on weekends and in the summer.

“My father wanted to instill the value of hard work and learning to be independent at a very early age.” He explains, “I grew into the business.” He learned the front and back end of the business. By age 20 he was actively involved at the head office and learned to oversee the company’s operations. He also entered the world of commercial and retail property management.

He points out, “I enjoy the diversity of doing different things, thinking outside the box, and being involved with businesses that complement each venture.”

In addition to his restaurants, Desmond is actively involved as a producer of reality shows and movies. He is the producer of the viral hit YouTube reality web series Ultra Rich Asian Girls and was a co-executive producer of the movie Unbanned The Legend of AJ1, which was shown at the Tribeca Film Festival.

Leaves left behind will cause the grass to rot underneath. • Do you have trees that drop seeds such as Maple, Oak or Chestnut? Rake them up to prevent numerous seedlings from sprouting in spring. Cutting off the dead flowers from shrubs such as Hydrangeas will protect your plants if there is a snow fall. • For small Japanese maples, stripping the leaves off helps snow fall right through the branch structure. • Fruit Trees: apply lime to the base of trees in fall, allowing the chemical process to take place throughout winter. Dolomitic lime takes 6 months to change soil pH. By spring, your tree will be primed to produce. • Plant new shrubs and perennials – fall is ideal for root growth.
• Add winter colour with pansies, cyclamen, and kale. • Plant spring bulbs in a sunny, well-drained spot. You can’t do this in spring! Another Trend to Debate – Leave the Leaves? Do you leave fallen leaves on garden beds or rake them off and top beds with composted mulch? If you would like to incorporate leaves into your garden beds, it is important to shred the leaves first, compost them in a pile and apply to your garden in one year’s time. Leaves that are left to decompose will tie up nitrogen in the process of breaking down. Because of our high rainfall, leaves left on the ground tend to rot and grow harmful moulds. It can take several years for leaves to fully decompose. We prefer to use aged, composted material on the garden beds so that nutrients are available right away once you apply the topdressing.

Why have one ‘y’ when you can have three? Angel Peng, the founder and president of THIRSTYYY, explains the origin of the Vancouver-based convenience store’s name. “It is memorable, easy to recognize, simple and fun. It actually makes you feel thirsty with the extra y’s.” THIRSTYYY is a newcomer to Dunbar North. The Japanese culture-based Asian snack and convenience store opened in June 2021 with five other locations now open in Kitsilano, Kerrisdale, Point Grey, downtown Vancouver, and inside the UBC Nest. Another store is planned for West Broadway, and the company has its sight set on opening shops in Richmond and Tsawwassen. The convenience store’s concept is built on a Japanese style of marketing, management, and 36
presentation with its immaculate and organized feel. Angel says, “The way we present and serve products is as important as the products themselves.” She adds, “THIRSTYYY is based on a condensed version of FamilyMart, which is found everywhere in Japan and Asia.” Elementary, high school, and UBC students and Dunbar residents are among the customers who are delighted to have THIRSTYYY in the neighbourhood.
“Our Japanese products represent taste and quality at a very competitive price. Our goal is to carry and present things that are fun and fresh.”

Lining the shelves, you will find many snacks such as sweets, biscuits, crackers, chips, cups of noodles, and grilled fish in foil packages. True to the store’s name, THIRSTYYY customers are delighted to find many popular Japanese energy drinks such as Pocari and Lemon CC which are some of the most soughtafter beverages in Japan. The store often runs out as people will purchase eight to 12 bottles at a time. “Best selected” fresh food is also available, with more selections coming soon. Products vary depending on the size of the store—Angel points out Dunbar is a smaller location. Sushi, bento, and Japanese “sandos” (a Japanese nickname for a sandwich) include A5 Wagyu ribeye steak with handmade Hokkaido milk bread and house-made umami sauce, as well as fruit, egg tamago, pork tonkatsu, and chicken nanban sandos.

In addition to snacks, the store sells some noteworthy cosmetics. Angel says, “Cosme creates awardwinning Japanese cosmetics. Pola is a Tokyo-based company, and their limitededition osmanthus blossom-scented body wash is currently available. People see these items on social media and on YouTube and are excited to find them here.” Customer feedback has been extremely positive. People frequently say they feel like they are in Japan. Beautiful ceramic ramen bowls and plates are sold in a variety of patterns. Angel describes the dishes as, “Quality, but not high priced. All are handmade and are sold at the convenience store due to their connection with food and daily uses.”
