A Message from DVBA Mysha Dewar-McClelland, Past President of the Dunbar Village Business Association As we launch our last issue of 2020, let’s pause for a moment and truly enjoy the beautiful sight of vibrant autumn leaves falling in Dunbar. Winter is quickly approaching and there are many ways to enjoy the cooler weather as well as prepare for the holiday season in our very own neighbourhood! We are very excited about the recent opening of Bells and Whistles on the corner of W. 29th Avenue at 4497 Dunbar Street. James Iranzad, one of the owners, is featured on the cover. The restaurant’s heated outdoor patio is perfect for this time of year and the eyecatching, brightly-coloured geometric exterior will draw you in almost as much as the milehigh burgers, milkshakes, craft beer, cocktails, and every other delicious treat. Dunbar’s Great Clips closed when the block was redeveloped and its owner chose to reopen as Stylish Cut in July 2019. Stylish Cut continues to provide affordable haircuts and an extremely friendly staff who are dedicated to their profession. They recently added hair colouring to their services, in addition to perms and highlights. While many of us have resorted to online shopping over the past few months, don’t forget about our wonderful local businesses this holiday season. You can start by perusing our annual Dunbar Village Gift Guide inside,
which will help you discover just what our local businesses offer. They are open with care and look forward to serving you. The DVBA annual general meeting was held virtually this year on October 28. We welcome the return of last year’s Board with the addition of RBC’s new manager to the Board of Directors. Due to the pandemic, there will be no Dunbar Village Business Association community events taking place for the remainder of the year but soon new winter banners will dress up the streets. The pandemic has been extremely challenging for our local businesses and sadly we must say goodbye to some of our familiar stops such as Mai’s Dry Cleaners, Da Future Studio, Image Optometry, and Vancity Dunbar. However, we welcome some new pop-ups along Dunbar like Serenity West at 4305 Dunbar Street (former location of Carousel) and Through the Garden Gate at 4335 Dunbar Street. We encourage you to continue to support Dunbar’s merchants year-round and keep our community vibrant. We wish you a season filled with joy, peace, and hope. Remember, we are all in this together.

Bells and Whistles: Top Notch Casual Fare Story by Sarah Gordon

It’s a pleasure to deliver a good news story in this topsy-turvy pandemic year. Bells and Whistles, Dunbar’s new addition to the restaurant scene, has generated a buzz and the community response has been amazing. We spoke with James Iranzad of Gooseneck Hospitality to learn more about this quintessential neighbourhood pub. Dunbar’s Bells and Whistles is the second Vancouver location; it opened on September 8, 2020. The original and highly successful Bells and Whistles launched on Fraser Street in 2017. This is the sixth venture for restaurateurs James Iranzad, Nick Miller, and Josh Pape of Gooseneck Hospitality. In addition to Bells and Whistles, they also own and operate awardwinning Vancouver restaurants Wildebeest, Lucky Taco, and two Bufala locations (one is located in Kerrisdale). Located on the corner of Dunbar and W. 29th 8
Avenue, the eye-catching brightly coloured geometric exterior signals that you have found the home of Bells and Whistles with its mile-high burgers, sandwiches, ice creams, snacks, craft beer, cocktails and so much more deliciousness.
“Bells and Whistles offers the very best in food and beverage quality possible, and always with a focus on local ingredients and amazing value, without any pretension.” James Iranzad The three business partners coveted this location for a few years and loved it for the role they imagined it could fill in the neighbourhood, as well as its south-facing corner position. They couldn’t pass it up when it became available earlier this year.

Bells and Whistles is stylish, cheerful, and comfortable. Built during the COVID-19 era, the design was highly conscious of distancing and incorporated physical separations to ensure both comfort and safety. It is as safe as a restaurant can be both inside and out. The patio is huge, and will soon be enclosed and heated for customers’ year-round pleasure. “We are very happy to offer not only the original patio but also the extended curbside patio we built. When you dine, you can enjoy exceptional airflow in the restaurant,” James comments. He says, “The community has been amazing. Everyone has been lovely in recognizing what we are trying to contribute and has been supporting us since the day we opened. My partner Josh went to Saint George’s and I went to Kerrisdale Elementary and Prince of Wales Secondary. I’ve lived nearby for years and have been actively involved as a coach and board member for Vancouver United FC for years.”
James says, “I hope people feel as comfortable coming in for food and drinks as I did back in the day when this was Sodas!”

“I’m a burger lover. I love our burger with both aged cheddar and American cheese. Having said that, our fried chicken sandwich is unbelievably delicious, especially if you order it tossed in one of our sauces.” Jethro’s restaurant closed a few months ago leaving few traditional brunch options in the neighbourhood, which is part of the reason James, Nick, and Josh wanted to unveil Bells and Whistles brunch menu as soon as possible. It’s the same tried, tested, and true menu as the Fraser Street location. Choose from a variety of Eggs Benedict with all the bells and whistles or an omelette, waffles, French toast accompanied by locally roasted French press or Kahlua and coffee.
“We would definitely like to continue growing, carefully, as it never ceases to be satisfying to bring the pleasures of a good neighbourhood restaurant to an underserviced community. We like to look for areas where we would be welcome, where we could hopefully make the locals happier with our presence,” James says. He remarks, “We’re lucky that we also have an amazing team of senior management that bring a level of care and passion to the food, drink, and service they provide that’s perfectly aligned with what Gooseneck Hospitality’s all about.”

James says, “We work with our brilliant craft beer industry to bring our guests the very best in local offerings, including a rotating board of rarities and special seasonal releases. As for cocktails, we insist on using only fresh juices, premium spirits, the very best ice, in proper glassware. It really makes a difference, and they’re served by friendly bartenders at neighbourhood prices.” They are delighted with the feedback they have received to date. The best reaction is seeing repeated customer visits in such a short time. Take-out has also been very strong and well received.

Stylish Cut: Where Customers’ Happiness is a Priority Story by Sarah Gordon

Leila Mollapour is so passionate about her profession as a hairstylist and salon manager that she commutes two hours a day to Dunbar by bus and train. She says, “I love Dunbar people and the neighbourhood. I wouldn’t work anywhere else.” She worked at Dunbar’s Great Clips for nine years before it closed due to the block being redeveloped. The owner chose to reopen in a new storefront in July 2019 and named the hair salon Stylish Cut. The dedicated employees came along, as they are a united team and enjoy working together. In turn, their loyal client base followed them. As we all know, when you find a good stylist you will travel any distance to keep them. Having your hair cut or coloured defines your look, therefore, you need to find a stylist you trust. 26
Leila enjoys the balance of cutting hair and managing the paperwork. Several years ago she took a management course and learnt how to train her co-workers on a new software program. She says, “I am always here to help the staff. I have built wonderful relationships with this great group of people.” Leila and the four other stylists also have a close relationship with the salon’s owner.
“It’s a family location. Some clients have grown up here,” says Leila. Stylish Cut continues to provide very affordable haircuts. The salon recently added hair colouring to its services, which also includes perms and highlights.

Many senior clients come in weekly to get their hair washed. The busy four-chair salon sees a variety of clients from children to adults. Positive word of mouth brings many new customers to Stylish Cut. “Everyone loves us,” says Leila. Kids enjoy the treat of a lollipop after their appointment. Before the pandemic, there were often hugs exchanged between clients and their stylists. Leila mentions, “When kids call me ‘Aunty Leila, that is priceless.”
“Our customers’ happiness is our priority.” Lelia Mollapour She is devoted to this neighbourhood. Leila mentions, “The clients are so nice. They are super kind and very humble people. They have become part of my family.” Building relationships with her clients is extremely important to Leila. She has a knack for remembering people’s birthdays and significant events in their lives. It makes clients feel special and it comes naturally to her.

Leila says, “In this business, you also have to be a good psychologist. Some people want to change their mood by changing their appearance and a good haircut can do that.” With a laugh, Leila reports, “I have become an expert at reading someone’s day. I can sense if they have had a long day and want to be quiet. I do my homework about many subjects from sports to hockey, politics, current events, and kids’ topics too so I have a wide range of topics to discuss. I also follow celebrities’ hairstyles to keep informed if a client asks for a specific cut.” Originally from Iran, Leila is extremely proud of her Persian heritage and gets asked many questions about her homeland. She says, “I feel like an ambassador of my country, and have studied a lot about it. I know a lot more about Iran and my culture now than when I lived there!”

COVID-19 has altered the way most businesses operate including hair salons. The shop is sanitized many times throughout the day. Appointments can be booked with new guidelines in place. The stylists attempt to accommodate walk-in customers to the best of their ability. Masks and physical distancing are necessary. Clients are encouraged to come in alone unless they require assistance (such as children). If you are hoping to read a magazine while you wait, you must bring one along. The salon’s hours of operation are very convenient. New COVID-19 hours are weekdays from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., Saturdays from 10:00 am. to 6:00 p.m., and Sundays from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
At the end of the day, hearing a happy customer say, “I will come back,” is the greatest reward for all of the stylists at Stylish Cut.
What makes this business special? Leila comments, “We really respect our customers. Even at closing, we will stay open if someone shows up or phones to request a haircut. We never say we are closed.”

A new doctor has joined our team to serve you better! It is with great pleasure that we welcome Dr. Travis Gibson to our Westside family. Dr. Travis Gibson was born and raised in North Vancouver. He attended the University of British Columbia for both his Bachelor of Science (BSc) in Chemistry, and his Doctor of Dental Medicine (DMD) degrees. After graduating, Dr. Gibson practiced as a general dentist in northern BC, before once again returning to UBC to obtain his Master of Science (MSc) in Craniofacial Science and Diploma in Orthodontics. After completing his orthodontic education, Dr Gibson spent a year in the Craniofacial Orthodontic Fellowship at New York University. He has extensive experience in treating complex orthodontic problems such as cleft lip and palate and is a member of the BC Children’s Hospital Cleft and Craniofacial team. Just like all of us at Westside Orthodontics, he is particularly dedicated to ensuring that all our patients feel comfortable in the office and have a positive orthodontic experience!

Our global community is living through what has been coined as “The Great Reset.” With work from home and cancelled travel plans colliding together this year, many homeowners are creating outdoors spaces for gathering and relaxing. In 2020, we saw many people become new gardeners, spend more time than ever outdoors, and grow their own food on the land they have available. As gardens became a key focus of home life, new plantings, flowering plants, and edible gardens have been created. Garden Trends for Urban Gardeners in 2021 Plant small space trees: My top 3 small flowering trees for Vancouver are: Eastern redbud, Chinese dogwood and Japanese snowbell. Take care of fruit trees or plant new ones: Remember to hard prune fruit trees, maples, birch, ornamental cherries and plums in winter, primarily in January while dormant. Build Victory Gardens in raised beds or replace lawns for food growing.
Grow Small: Dwarf varieties offer compact options for food growing, especially berries. Check your local garden centre in spring. Gardens for Gathering Humans, being a social species, will still want to get together with friends and family…just outdoors. Consider creating a gathering space outside that can be used year-round. A covered patio space with temporary walls or heaters allows you to get together with loved ones in the ultimate well-ventilated environment: your own outdoor space. Reduce Stress A garden, container planting on a deck, or raised vegetable garden can have a positive impact on your health. Gardening is a great way to increase health and wellness.
