A Message from DVBA Mysha Dewar-McClelland, President of the Dunbar Village Business Association environment to enjoy coffee or a meal. Of course there is still the popular play area for kids. Dunbar’s newest coffee shop and bakery is making our hearts flutter! At the end of February, Emma Irvine opened Sweet Somethings, a wonderful place to hang out and enjoy breakfast, lunch or just relax with a coffee and baked treat. Emma does catering too! Ah, glorious summer has officially arrived and it’s time to maximize the long, sun-filled days. Take the bike out for a spin, stroll along Dunbar Street and treat yourself to a lemonade at Sweet Somethings or an ice cream at Dairy Queen, take a picnic to Memorial West Park, or simply relax in your own backyard. The Dunbar Community Centre Association’s month long Salmonberry Days culminated with its fabulously successful Salmonberry Days’ Festival. The DVBA was proud to be one of the Festival’s participants and sponsored Bent Air Balloons. Digger the mascot was there to celebrate as well. Stong’s Market provided and served delicious barbecued gourmet hot dogs especially for the festival. Check out this year’s pictures on page 32. Kokopelli Café owner Julia Lomonosova appears on the cover with her two children at the Salmonberry Days Fair. Last December Julia and her husband Paul took ownership of the café and are pleased to offer Dunbar families a stylish, comfortable

Sadly, the DVBA would like to say a heartfelt goodbye to our much loved Dunbar Produce; it played a big part on Dunbar since 2002. The DVBA would like to wish you a wonderful summer. We are already planning another terrific Harvest Festival for the Dunbar community so be sure to mark September 8th on your calendar. Thank you for choosing to support Dunbar businesses, by doing so you play an active role in helping our community thrive.

Kokopelli Café:

A Dunbar Tradition Reinvented Story by Sarah Gordon

It’s a long way from Moscow to Vancouver, but Julia Lomonosova and Paul Lomonossov settled in over the last year and feel right at home in Canada.

wanted. We knew we wanted something for kids and families and we wanted to do something that would be socially valuable for the community,” says Paul.

Last June the couple moved to Vancouver with their two young children to start a new life. In the late 1990s Paul had lived in Mississauga and in 2016 he brought Julia to visit Ontario and B.C. as possible locations to live. They chose Vancouver for the climate and the proximity to nature.

Last December Julia and Paul became the new owners of Kokopelli Café.

Julia headed a Russian National high-speed rail project before leaving the country and Paul worked for a large Telecom company as a chief sales officer. With the move they knew their career paths would change direction. Paul reflects back to conversations he and Julia had where they dreamt of owning a business together. He says, “We had all of the knowledge on how to structure a large business. We took into consideration the type of business we 8 Dunbar_Life_JUNE2018.indd 8

He adds, “We did some research to understand the neighbourhood and what the residents might require.” They discovered it is a family oriented community and with this in mind, they wanted to offer a warm and cozy place for locals.

When they discovered Kokepelli was for sale Paul says, ”Our reaction was bingo! That’s what we were looking for.” www.DunbarLife.com 2018-06-06 4:26:41 PM

Both of them are grateful to Jessica Hotz (who founded Kokopelli with business partner Cindy Delgado) for the help she has offered them. Jessica’s son continues to work at the restaurant on Saturdays. One of their first tasks was to update the café. Julia and Paul discovered that many Dunbar residents have European roots and decided to reflect this in the makeover. They painted the walls a clean white, and added images of Paris and Amsterdam to create a European coffee shop atmosphere. It was important to the couple to preserve the family friendly environment which features a play area in the back for children; there are even tables reserved for kids. Julia comments, “As a mom, I know how exhausting it can be sometimes. You desperately need some "sanity time" to have your coffee and be able to eat your favourite treat with two hands. Kokopelli gives moms an opportunity to rest, talk with a friend or partner, read a magazine or just sit and do nothing. We are giving this precious moment to moms, while their kids are busy in the play area. It’s a win-win situation.”

Their goal is to provide a stylish, comfortable atmosphere while enjoying great coffee, and healthy home style baking.

Julia says, “The food industry is new for me, so it’s a lot of learning, which I really enjoy. It is interesting from many aspects - starting from business related questions to experiments in the kitchen where your only limit is your imagination. So, I don't have boring days. Every day there are new questions to address, challenges to overcome, and new things to implement.” The menu was designed with support from a professional chef to give it a European slant. The sandwich and wrap menu is based on exclusive recipes developed for Kokopelli Café and features top grade, healthy ingredients. Some core recipes remain while some new items have also been introduced. Start the day with a whole grain morning crossiant stuffed with scrambled eggs, ham and cheese or a hearty breakfast wrap with oven baked eggs, chorizo, potatoes, onion and cheese.

supporting Kokopelli for years. It makes us very different from other places where people just come to buy coffee and may not return.”

Lunches range from soups to salads, paninis, quiches and wraps (the Southwest wrap is their top seller). Kids also have their own menu to choose from. Treat yourself to a house-baked pastry with your coffee or tea. For those crazy busy days when cooking is the last thing you want to do, try a home made frozen take away meal (chicken pie, quiche, macaroni and cheese). Healthy smoothies can also be found at Kokopelli. Paul says, “We would like to add some desserts to the menu. Julia makes fantastic cakes.” What makes Kokopelli stand out? Julia replies, “This business is very personal, almost all of our customers have been

10 Dunbar_Life_JUNE2018.indd 10

She adds, “At Kokopelli we know customers’ names, their kids, sometimes grandparents, their vacation plans, school related issues with theirs kids, the list is long. We talk about things that matter to them, whether it is trying to cheer them up if it's a bad day, to encourage and support them, and to be a part of their happy moments that they share with us. This is how we stand out from the rest.” At the end of a long day what do Julia and Paul find most rewarding about living their dream? Julia says with a smile, “Dunbar is all about people. It’s a great and very supportive neighbourhood that we are happy to be part of.” Paul adds, “We have made many friends here. They come in to talk and grab a coffee. They are no longer customers – they have become friends.” Kokopelli Café 4593 Dunbar Street Vancouver, BC V6S 2G7 Telephone 604-228-0818 www.kokopelliecafe.com

Sweet Somethings: A New Bakery For Dunbar Story by Sarah Gordon

Photos by Sandra Steier

We’d like to whisper Sweet Somethings into your ear; there’s a new coffee shop and bakery in Dunbar Village and it’s making our hearts flutter! At the end of February 2018 the cozy spot opened and it’s a wonderful place to hang out and enjoy a coffee and a baked treat. Owner Emma Irvine is the industrious and delightful owner. Remarkably, she is juggling her business and finishing off her undergraduate degree in Psychology and Commerce at UBC. She’s already putting her minor in Commerce to good use as she applies her business savvy skills to her budding enterprise. Emma has an entrepreneurial spirit – in addition to starting Sweet Somethings she also created a chocolate bar for a university course and is putting her idea into production. 16 Dunbar_Life_JUNE2018.indd 16

Long time Dunbar residents will recall this location was previously home to Butter Baked Goods and for many decades it housed Ideal Bakery. Sweet Somethings’ customers share many fond stories about Ideal Bakery owner Mabel Pickett. Emma believes Mabel was roughly the same age (early 20s) when she started her bakery. She says, “I hope to develop my business to be as successful as hers was.” Emma says, “Some senior customers have lived in the area for 60 to 80 years. It makes me really happy to have opened a bakery and stay true to how they grew up in the area.” www.DunbarLife.com 2018-06-06 4:26:47 PM

Tempting treats are always in rotation and presently range from butter and lemon tarts to lavender shortbread, scones, salted dark chocolate wafer cookies, muffins, cinnamon buns, cupcakes and vegan goodies. Custom cakes are also available to order.

“Cupcakes fly off the shelf. The minis are very popular,” says Emma. The retro style café makes customers feel right at home. She says, “I want people to feel like grandma’s in the back baking.” The cheerful surrounding features gray and white striped wallpaper with robin’s egg blue wainscoting, black and white checkerboard flooring with drop leaf white tables and vintage chairs painted grey. Emma does not appear to have any new business owner jitters. She explains, “My parents encourage me to be independent. They set me up for this in so many ways. I love to try new things and I enjoy creating.”

Emma has a knack for cake decorating and is learning many secrets from her baker on staff. The staff is largely high school and university students. The flexibility of being her own boss provides Emma with opportunities to experiment with the menu. She enjoys trying out different recipes and seeing how customers respond. She is testing the waters with seasonal menu items such as summer drinks (fresh squeezed lemonade and strawberry lemonade), and just in time for the hot weather, Sweet Somethings will be offering locally sourced ice cream in cones.

She designed the floor plan and acted as the general contractor during the renovation. She handled business applications, hired all of the trades, learned how to hang wallpaper, selected the décor, and yes, even learned how to bake. Emma is completely self-taught and with a relaxed confidence says, “You can learn anything from YouTube. If I see it most of the time I can make it.” One acquisition she’s exceptionally happy about is the “the Ferrari of coffee machines” that makes a terrific cup of joe. Timbertrain Coffee Roasters (located in East Vancouver) supplies the java that is roasted weekly. Emma describes the coffee as exhibiting “toffee notes with a lower acidity level.” Sweet Somethings offers a full menu of specialty, pour over and brewed coffee in addition to tea. Emma is committed to supporting local producers and purchases tea from Westholme Tea Company on Vancouver Island. She carries a good selection of their organic, black, herbal, and green teas. www.DunbarLife.com Dunbar_Life_JUNE2018.indd 17

17 2018-06-06 4:26:48 PM

In addition to baked goods, Sweet Somethings offers a breakfast and lunch menu. Breakfast is served all day and Emma says the avocado toast with lemon ricotta or tomato on top is a customer favourite.

Hearing customers say, “This is what the neighbourhood has been missing” is a huge reward for this hard working business owner.

Like every good diner, a blue plate special is featured daily. Other selections include pot pies (chicken, beef, veggie, tourtière), beet and apple salad, a variety of sandwiches and a soup of the day.

In the short time that Sweet Somethings has been open Emma has noticed patterns. There is an after school rush when kids and parents come in, and kids will pull up on their bikes and stop in to order a grilled cheese sandwich.

A section of the shop is devoted to merchandise that includes Westholme teas to brew at home, along with chocolate from Vancouver based Lisa Lou’s Chocolate Bar.

There are some 12 and 13-year-old regulars who she knows by name. Emma expects that her shop will be a popular destination this summer when ice cream is available.

She also sells a luxurious perfume, bath soap and hand lotion line by Carthusia from Capri, Italy. Emma’s mother discovered and fell in love with the products and thought they would be a lovely addition to the shop.

Welcome to the neighbourhood, Sweet Somethings, and thank you for carrying on the tradition of offering the community a bakery in central Dunbar.

With a big smile Emma says, “This is such a social business and I really love what I do.”

Incorporating rainwater into the garden can provide many benefits. Capturing water for later use gives plantings a backup plan during drought months. Using it for water features like fountains or reflective stone pools can bring peace to your outdoor space as well, very relaxing indeed.

Companion Technique: More mulch, less water. Applying a layer of mulch to garden beds will save you time from your watering routine. Mulch helps conserve moisture during the drought months in summer, meaning less sprinkler set up time for you. To help reduce water evaporation, apply a two to three inch deep layer of composted bark mulch to your garden beds.

Work Summer Bulbs for Explosive Colour Summer flowering bulbs can be planted now that soil temperature has warmed up. Dahlias, Canna Lilies and Gladiolus, to name a few, are all bulbs. Plant in late spring with your annuals, in full sun and well drained soil. Calla Lilies can be planted in part shade or full sun. Stake taller plants as they grow. These plants will give you great rewards, many blooms, for such easy work and low cost.

Reverend Stuart Hallam

St. Philip’s Anglican Church: Champion of Dunbar Village Story by Sarah Gordon

Photos by Sandra Steier

Ninety-three years ago Dunbar was a very young community. It was a time when Vancouver was expanding; schools such as Lord Kitchener Elementary and Lord Byng Secondary opened, streetcar lines had reached this outlying area of the city and the business district between West 25th and 30th Avenues was growing. It was during this time that St. Philip’s Anglican Church, our Champion of Dunbar Village, was founded. The church has been an integral part of the community since 1925. St. Philip’s school program started in a small school annex, followed four months later by worship services. Within a year the process of building the church began. The church has meant and continues to mean many things to many people. St Philip’s serves people at all times of their lives, especially those on a journey of meaning, balance, and faith. 26 Dunbar_Life_JUNE2018.indd 26

St. Philip’s has recently welcomed rector Stuart Hallam and the parishioners are extremely excited. Reverend Hallam, his wife and daughter arrived in Canada at the beginning of May from England. The Reverend’s breadth of experience includes pastoral care, youth and young adult ministry, as well as team ministry. This is exactly what St. Philip’s Church had been searching for. Reverend Canon Dr. Harold Munn acted as the church’s interim Priest-in-Charge for the last six months while the parish awaited the arrival of their new rector. Reverend Munn says, “Times have changed and churches are no longer as central to public life as they were in the past and so the general public are less likely to experience both the beauty and the affirmation of dignity and justice that the congregation stands for.” www.DunbarLife.com 2018-06-06 4:27:29 PM

While the general public may not be as involved as they once were, St. Philip’s is taking proactive steps to build their congregation. “I think St. Philip's is on the verge of developing a new depth of relationship with the Dunbar community in which the remarkable qualities of beauty in music and other expressions of awe in Sunday worship, as well as the commitment to treating those on the margins of society with dignity and respect can be even more deeply shared,” says Reverend Munn.

church. She continues to be actively involved as a volunteer in many capacities. Diana recalls bowling at the church’s twolane bowling alley (yes, you read that correctly, and it still exists) in the 1950s. She points out, “St. Philip’s was our “community centre” before Dunbar built its own, providing children and adults with many opportunities, including bowling, badminton and many youth groups.”

Community outreach is central to St. Philip’s and involvement comes in many forms.

He adds, “New times provide opportunities for new relationships of depth and belonging at what is a challenging time in history. The community and St. Philip's church have a unique opportunity to move together into a satisfying and fulfilling future in which the lives of all our citizens can be enhanced.”

The Westside Anglicans Neighbourhood Ministry provides care and companionship to the homeless and others in need in the community. St. Philip’s works with three other Anglican churches on Vancouver’s west side: St. Anselm's, St. Helen’s and St. John Shaughnessy.

Parishioner Diana Bragg began attending St. Philip’s when she was a child, making this her 75th year as a parishioner. She was christened, confirmed, married and held funeral services for family members at the

Parishioner Mary Lymburner explains, “It started eleven years ago with small teams of three or four people, preferably one from each parish, walking around the streets in our neighbourhood to meet the homeless,

Mary Lymburner offering conversation, and packets of nonperishable food and fruit. This basic activity still happens, with a team going out every Saturday morning from one of the four churches.” They also launched a Mobile Care Unit, which provides integrated basic medical care and social service support on the west side. In 2017 they assisted 156 people by providing help with medical problems and navigating government processes, such as access to housing. When Coast Mental Health’s Dunbar Apartments opened in 2011, members of St. Philip’s knitted an afghan bedspread for each resident, donated new linen, and the children painted a picture for each room with the words “Welcome to your new home.” Diana says, “We regularly drop off items they need and food.”

Helping those in need is of utmost importance to St. Philip’s Anglican Church. Diana mentions, “We are in the process of bringing to Canada a widow with four children, her brother and their parents from 28 Dunbar_Life_JUNE2018.indd 28

Diana Bragg a camp in Lebanon. They are almost on the way after over a year of planning.” Mary adds, “There are many facets to a sponsorship: fundraising, the application process itself, finding housing, welcoming the refugees and helping them settle, helping them enrol in school for the children and English classes for the adults, and ultimately helping the adults find jobs and become independent. It is a very interesting and rewarding process, as we get to know people from a very different culture and life experience.” Parishioners volunteer at the Vancouver Food Bank distribution at St. Michael’s Multicultural Anglican Church in the Mount Pleasant neighbourhood. Food and money are collected for the Vancouver Food Bank the first Sunday of the month. At Christmas, hampers of gifts and food are assembled and donated to needy families identified through two inner city schools; 24 families benefited last year. The church adopted an inner city school (Lord Selkirk Elementary School and its Annex) and funds supplies for their breakfast program. As well, the church purchases clothing with Outreach money for two women’s shelters. www.DunbarLife.com 2018-06-06 4:27:32 PM

Diana says, “During Dunbar Village Business Association’s Harvest Festival the church sets up a table in front of Shoppers Drug Mart and hand out invitations to church events. Our rector used to bring his big curly dog for kids to pat – it was always a big hit.“ St. Philip’s annual Christmas Fair is an important parish community-builder and is the church’s biggest fundraiser. Preparations begin as early as summer when people put up preserves, knit, sew, create and bake – especially legendary fruitcakes. All ages of parishioners contribute, and Dunbar businesses support the church with donations of goods and services. The Christmas Fair draws loyal shoppers every year who line up down the block by opening time. Senior members of the congregation and others from the community enjoy the Seniors Café. This free monthly drop in program offers activities like painting, flower arranging, container gardening, and board games with the chance to chat and have refreshments. Another program open to both parishioners and the Dunbar community is the All Parish Open Gym. These drop-in evenings have become very popular with youth and their parents. A potluck supper begins the

www.DunbarLife.com Dunbar_Life_JUNE2018.indd 29

evening followed by games in the open gym. Michael Murray is the church’s music director and his talent is highly valued. He conducts and accompanies the choir, playing piano, harpsichord and organ. Last year the church hosted 16 concerts that were well attended by the general public. The charity this caring congregation offers is immeasurable. Thank you, St. Philip’s Anglican Church, for being a Champion of Dunbar Village. And to Reverend Hallam and his family we offer a warm welcome. Let’s face it, while we may want to stay unplugged the fact of the matter is that everything is moving online. Banking, shopping & communicating are just some of the things that most of us do online daily. The simplest way to keep your information safe online is to always be wary of entering any personal information on websites. Always check and re-check where you’re inputting your information and ask yourself why the website is asking for your information. When banking or shopping online, always make sure that the website you’re visiting has a padlock icon in the address bar. Never use the same password twice.

DUNBAR LIFE: Ask An Expert What is the Colour of the Year? For Beauti-Tone, the colour-of-the-year is Green Peace, a soothing balancing colour with strong energy. When used in a room, people entering develop a sense of ease and peace. It quiets the noise and intensity of life and creates a gentle, nurturing space in which to replenish, restore and renew.

Jeffrey Ho, Owner

A colour strongly rooted in nature, Green Peace is an interesting blend of an earthy camouflage green and a soft botanical green. Could it be the new neutral? For beautiful colour combinations for your home, look no further than these luscious trios from the Simon Chang, Model Home Trend Colour Collection.

DUNBAR LIFE: Ask An Expert Why is so difficult to prioritize exercise even when we know it’s the best strategy for good health and stress reduction? Exercise requires commitment and dedication and we already have a lot of responsibilities to tend to in our everyday lives, with work, family, etc.. Exercise can also be tedious and repetitive, requiring you to bring to it your own enthusiasm and creativity. Consider managing that 3x/week for the rest of your life; no wonder people give up. Find something you are passionate about, where you are learning with the support of a positive community; add a dash of accountability then you might just have the magic recipe for success. Martial Arts gives you a tough workout that changes every class. You will learn technical and useful skills, and train alongside a group of people who challenge and motivate you to show up and be your best. If you’ve never tried Martial Arts before, it could be the one thing that gets you truly hooked on exercise. If nothing else, you’ll get rid of some stress as you kick and punch your way to a new you. 34 Dunbar_Life_JUNE2018.indd 34

DUNBAR LIFE: Ask An Expert How can I keep my home safe and secure while on summer vacation? • Make it look like you’re home. Use timers on interior and exterior lights. Ask someone to mow and water your lawn, and if you have a pool, keep the water clear and circulating. • Keep your car wherever you would normally. • Install an automatic water leak detection and water shut-off system. This can save you huge headaches and costs if a pipe or faucet leaks while you’re away. • Turn off washing machines, dryers, and dishwashers. Unplug computers, TVs, and other electronics. Don’t risk having a water problem or damage from a power surge that won’t be taken care of for days or weeks. • Make sure your valuables are safe, secure, and hidden. • Ask a trusted neighbour, friend, or family member to keep an eye on things. • Make sure exterior doors are secured with a heavy deadbolt. • Don’t post your vacation plans on social media. • Contact your alarm company to let them know you’ll be out of town.

DUNBAR LIFE: Ask An Expert I want to get active this summer. How can I prevent an injury? Great question! Being proactive will help to prevent injuries while you are having fun in the sun! Have a physio assess your current status and what specifics you may need to do for your preferred activity. They can help guide your gradual exposure to an activity that will give you the mobility, strength and confidence to best enjoy your favorite summer activities. Always warm up. Stretch before and after your activity, especially if you haven’t been very active of late. This will help to prevent joint injuries and muscle tears. Keep your core strong by doing strengthening exercises like planks, crunches and leg raises. Wear the right gear for the activity (helmets, gloves, footwear, etc). And if you have a pre-existing injury, you may benefit from wearing a brace or compression socks.
