LIFE INTEGRATIVE: Helping People Get Back to Doing What They Love Story by Sarah Gordon

Nineteen years ago a map of Vancouver and some pushpins helped Dr. Daniel Zybutz determine where he would open his chiropractic and massage business. He explains, “I put pins in the map where chiropractors were located throughout the city and noticed there was a need in our neighbourhood; there were no chiropractors here at the time.” Life Integrative (formerly Life Chiropractic & Massage) opened in 2001. The name changed when naturopathic care and physiotherapy services were introduced.
“We wanted to let people know that Life Integrative is a full-service integrative clinic that is patient-focused,” says Dr. Zybutz. 8
Dr. Zybutz is a chiropractor and the clinic’s owner. He was born in Durban, South Africa, and raised in Vancouver. He attended Palmer College of Chiropractic, graduating with honours in 1999. He practiced chiropractic in London, England for one year, before returning to Vancouver to open his Dunbar clinic. With more than 20 years of experience, Dr. Zybutz has shown his patients that any lifestyle can benefit from his expert care and knowledge, whether it is from chiropractic adjustments, spinal decompression, shockwave therapy, exercise, and rehabilitation, or orthotic inserts. Dr. Zybutz comments, “My job is to identify areas of structural stress that are preventing people from moving properly and healing, and then helping them move better. In contrast, a physiotherapist is an expert at muscular imbalances and prescribing specific exercises to help people stabilize their injuries.”

He and fellow chiropractor Dr. Nicholas Russell are dedicated to helping patients through chiropractic care by using a variety of techniques to bring the body and spine back into alignment, allowing the body to restore structure and support healing. An integrative approach incorporates exercise and posture as recommendations for achieving optimal health.
Most patients seek care for a problem such as pain resulting from an injury. A good portion of Dr. Zybutz’s practice is related to ICBC claims from motor vehicle accidents. “Patients do not need a referral to see a chiropractor,” says Dr. Zybutz. He remarks, “We put a lot of emphasis on finding out what the problem is and getting an accurate diagnosis. The treatment is an extension of that diagnosis and we have excellent practitioners that collaborate to provide a comprehensive treatment plan for the patient, including chiropractic, naturopathic medicine, physiotherapy, and massage.” Life Integrative’s registered massage therapists, Charlotte Chalmers, Danielle Jeschke, and
Jonathan Paez are second to none in the care they deliver. Physiotherapist, Sally Lin, is an expert in pelvic floor and lower back rehabilitation. Naturopathic doctors, Dr. Sarah Harbottle and Dr. Lucas MacMillan look at addressing the root cause of their patient’s concerns by taking into account not only physical symptoms but also mental/emotional, environmental, and social factors.
“Our integrative approach identifies the problem and creates a solution, which typically involves a treatment plan involving one or more of the practitioners.” Dr. Zybutz Life Integrative treats people as young as newborns. They see a wide range of people including athletes, university students, boomers, and seniors. Patients come from all over British Columbia for both in-person and virtual telehealth appointments. Dr. Zybutz points out, “At the beginning of the pandemic, we were able to stay open for emergencies and acute care during March, April, and May 2020. Our safety protocols were put in place in early March, before the B.C. Centre for

Disease Control even had guidelines to offer us. Once the guidelines came out, we were pleased that we were already doing everything that they asked us to do.” He adds, “Our safety protocols include screening patients with questionnaires before every visit. As well, we ensure they self-assess and practice social distancing. We spread visits out so that we have a minimal number of people in the office. We are fortunate that the space is 2,300 square feet and is very spacious and airy. We follow strict sanitization protocols between every visit.” Before the pandemic, Life Integrative supported community events and organizations, like local hockey teams. They look forward to a time when they can support these events once again. Dr. Zybutz mentions, “My wife, Sarah Harbottle, and I used to live in Vancouver, but we relocated to West Vancouver in 2013 to be closer to Sarah’s parents when we had children. We both love Dunbar, the people here make this community special. Everyone is down to earth and friendly and it is a wonderful experience to work here.”

“The most rewarding aspect of what we do is helping people get back to doing what they love. Unique Pieces of Art Transform a Space Story by Sarah Gordon

If you are craving a trip to an exotic destination, travel no further than Golden Rug Company at the corner of West 16th Avenue and Dunbar Street. Here you will find stacks of colourful handmade carpets that open a portal into the Middle Eastern countries from which they originate. The smell of wool and the feel of the assorted woven textures add to the experience. Traditional Persian carpets are well represented, along with flat-woven rugs including kilims that come from Afghanistan, India, Iran, and Pakistan, in addition to some antique pieces from Russia and Turkey. Ali Amini is Golden Rug’s owner. He was born in Tehran into a family with a history in carpet making. His father is a collector, and it seems this business was Ali’s destiny.

As a teenager, Ali travelled with his father to nomadic villages in western Iran where he learned about colours, patterns, and the history of carpets. He is deeply appreciative of those journeys as he felt a connection to the rich culture and language. In 1980, Ali started his career as a fashion designer in Iran. After running a successful clothing company, which sold his designer fashions, he was drawn back to handmade rugs. As a hobby, he began to make, repair, and design hand-knotted and hand-woven rugs for his customers. He and his family relocated to Canada in 1992. Ali continued to repair carpets and worked as a wholesaler. In 1996, he opened his first business on Robson Street. Eleven years later he closed the Robson location and in 2007

opened the Dunbar store. Golden Rug is considerably larger after an expansion and renovation two years ago. Ali laughs when he shares the story behind the name Golden Rug. A well-known designer requested a tribal carpet the colour of a golden sunset. Saffron was used to achieve the desired shade, and before long he had earned the nickname “golden boy.” An authority on rugs, he works closely with many respected interior designers and his client base comes from across North America.
Ali verbally paints a rich history of the beautiful carpets he sells. One hundred percent of Golden Rug’s carpets are handmade. Ali enthusiastically describes the carpet’s origins and the vast difference between chemical and vegetable dyes. Vegetable dyes are rarely used these days, which is a shame as the rich colours they produce are exquisite. He likes to present chemical and vegetable dyed carpets side by side so his clients can see the difference. Golden Rug’s website provides an overview of the vast selection, although Ali discourages buying carpets online. He believes, “You need to see and touch a carpet to truly appreciate it. A carpet is like a human, it has a soul.”

A rug woven from the best quality of wool can easily last a lifetime if cared for properly. The carpet industry is rapidly changing. Historically, mothers would pass the tradition to their children, however, today young people aren’t interested in making carpets by hand. Ali says, “I feel very fortunate to showcase some incredible pieces of art, as I don’t believe this industry will continue producing the same rate or quality as it has for hundreds of years. Sadly, that’s the case with many industries today that are involved in very laborious products.”

Ali is dedicated to trying to preserve the old techniques and traditions of this dying art form. He adds, “The cost of production, materials, and scarcity of makers today is changing the landscape of the carpet industry. I am fortunate to have a lot of inventory that is so reasonably priced because it was purchased in a different business climate. I enjoy passing on the knowledge and savings to my clients.” In addition to carpet sales, Golden Rug offers cleaning and repair services. The store has a specialized department for hand restoration repairs, which can be quite complex. What does Ali find most rewarding about his work? He comments, “Knowing people remember us positively when they appreciate the aesthetic of their carpet. Sometimes I meet children of clients from 25 years ago; we clean their carpets, which still bring them joy and fond memories of their loved ones.” It is not surprising that gorgeous carpets complement Ali’s homes. He and his wife gravitate to different styles but they find ways to make them work harmoniously. Their condo in the city is adorned with finer Persian carpets and modern brightly coloured Gabbeh carpets, while they have incorporated traditional vegetable dye carpets into their vacation property.

“We pick up things that we fall in love with on our travels, it’s fun to create your own style and story with particular meaning and memory of a trip,” he mentions. “When you think of nomadic tribes making carpets using vegetable-dyed wool you think of what they must have been thinking or feeling or seeing, which always translates into a very unique piece of art. Carpets add a great deal to the energy, mood, and overall ambience of space. Colours or the texture of a carpet under your feet can make you feel differently. I feel privileged to be invited into the homes of my clients to help transform the space. It makes me happy knowing that their carpet will be enjoyed for years to come,” he concludes.

www.HigherGroundGardens.com SPRING GARDENING TIPS 2021 Pruning Rhododendrons and Winter Flowering Shrubs The best time to prune any of your winter flowering shrubs is right after they’ve finished flowering. Viburnum ‘Dawn’ with its pink scented blossoms on bare branches is always the first to bloom in Vancouver gardens. Camellia flowers appear next, and then finally Rhododendrons. Pruning after flowering gives plants the entire growing season to set buds for next year’s flowering. It may be tempting to prune your flowering shrubs in autumn, to tidy up the plant’s shape, but doing so means you risk losing blossoms the following spring. Consider Watering Dry Spots and Hedges With nearly half the amount of precipitation this winter compared to last year, it’s hard not to
wonder just how dry the upcoming months will be. I have my fingers crossed for plenty of April showers. You may need to water your garden’s dry areas and hedges with deep watering during the spring months to make up for this winter’s lower rainfall levels. Cedar hedges that are planted with occidental varieties of cedars (Emerald cedar, Pyramid cedar) seem particularly susceptible to drought, and need good, deep watering especially. Turn on the sprinkler or hand water areas for an hour to an hour and a half. The earlier in the day this is done, the less water evaporation there will be. Leaving the sprinkler on allows water to percolate through your soil so roots will grow deeply as they seek out water. You will see the results if you do this once or twice a week.
