A Message from DVBA Mysha Dewar-McClelland, President of the Dunbar Village Business Association

Drop by the DVBA’s table at the Festival and watch for our mascot Digger, who is always happy to pose for photos.

The exquisite pink blossoms on the Japanese cherry trees that line our streets are a true sign that springtime has arrived in Dunbar. We eagerly welcome other spring rituals, among them the start of Little League season, lawn bowling, gardening, tennis, cycling, and walks in Pacific Spirit Park. Another sign of spring is the proliferation of rummage sales. Mark your calendar for the highly anticipated St. George’s School Spring Fair on May 5, Blenheim Bazaar “the world’s longest yard sale” on May 26, and the annual church sales. This issue of Dunbar Life contains a calendar of all the events in May for Salmonberry Days, organized by the Dunbar Residents’ Association. Dunbar Community Centre’s Salmonberry Days Festival is May 27. The Dunbar Village Business Association is proud to be part of both of these traditions through sponsorship and participation.

Southlands Heritage Farm is our cover feature and a participant in Salmonberry Days. On the cover are the grandchildren of Rick and Jennifer Maynard, who are the owners of this active farm. Southlands Farm offers educational and riding programs as well as being home to a variety of farm animals. Did you know they also run a seasonal farmers’ market? Inside, read about The Celtic Treasure Chest. Steve Coulson and Cristina Ciccone bought this cherished store in November 2016 and are continuing the tradition of selling products imported directly from England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales. Watch for collectibles to commemorate the May 19 royal wedding. We also feature 30 Minute Hit owned by Shannon Hann. Shannon teaches a high intensity boxing/kickboxing circuit for women — it is challenging, empowering and appeals to all ages and fitness levels. Take the time to enjoy all that spring has to offer from warmer days to trees budding, flowers pushing through the soil and birds hard at work constructing nests. Pedal around the neighbourhood or perhaps just go for a stroll and take it all in. As always, we thank you for choosing to support your local businesses.

The Celtic Treasure Chest Dunbar’s Destination Specialty Shop Story by Sarah Gordon

Photos by Sandra Steier

For many years Steve Coulson and Cristina Ciccone were customers of The Celtic Treasure Chest and were attracted to the shop for its fine assortment of products from the United Kingdom. When they discovered Steve and Lil McVittie were selling their established business Steve and Cristina started stocking up on products. Then they had an idea; rather than see the well-loved store close down (if nobody bought it) they ran through the scenario “what if we bought the business?” While neither of them had retail experience, they knew they loved the store and had sentimental attachment to it. They had been bringing their kids to The Celtic Treasure Chest since they were little to introduce them to Steve’s British heritage (he grew up in England). These were all signs that this was an interesting path to explore. They began imagining what their new life would look like and made the McVitties an offer. In November 2016 Steve and Cristina became the new owners of The Celtic Treasure Chest. Cristina is a registered clinical counsellor 8

and Steve is a computer programmer. Cristina continues to work part-time in her profession but Steve left his career behind to work at the shop. Their daughter Lalla attends UBC and works part-time managing the family business. Their son Gianluca also works at the store. Lalla says, “We have learnt so much about retail and imports.” The family has a lot of fun working together as a team.

Food and memories go hand in hand. The sight or taste of a particular food has the power to take people back to another place and time. Cristina and Lalla report that it is common for customers to feel nostalgic and they share some wonderful stories. Customers include expats from the United Kingdom, Ireland, Hong Kong, South Africa, Australia and New Zealand who miss their favourite products, and passers-by who are curious to see what is inside the shop with the flags outside. www.DunbarLife.com

People will share their childhood memories; Lalla remembers one customer bursting into the Murray Mints jingle. Another customer remembers eating Hula Hoop potato snacks off the end of her fingers (now they come in kid and adult finger sizes). Shopping experiences can be filled with emotion and some customers have been known to yell with excitement. Senior clients will come in regularly with their adult children to stock up on favourite products. “Last summer Dunbar was like little Ireland,” Lalla recalls. There was a huge influx of young Irish students in the area who couldn’t believe their good luck when they discovered the shop that made them feel like they were home.

cream, double Devon cream, British and Irish cheeses. Baked goods are made locally and fresh bread comes in weekly. Both the Scottish black top and Irish soda bread are very popular. As for the fresh Scotch eggs, it is difficult to keep them in stock; they sell out as quickly as they arrive. Look for them each Tuesday and Friday. Grocery items are plentiful and there is a list as long as your arm of what fills the store’s shelves including jams, marmalades, teas, biscuits, chocolates and sweets galore, beans, soups, chutneys, pickles, spreads, and baking supplies.

“The Celtic Treasure Chest has the feel of a small corner store. It is a destination specialty shop.” Cristina Ciccone At The Celtic Treasure Chest you will find products imported directly from England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales. The neatly arranged shop has a deli and dairy section stocked with U.K. style sausages, bacon, meat pies, sausage rolls, pasties, Scotch pies, haggis, Scottish kippers, haddock, white (Mealy) pudding and black (blood sausage) pudding, clotted www.DunbarLife.com

9

If you are a crisp fan (aka potato chips!) you will be impressed with what Lalla describes as “weird and fun” flavours. You will feel like you are on another continent when you explore the assortment of crisp choices from Marmite to roast chicken, roast steak, prawn cocktail, haggis and crispy bacon. In addition to the array of groceries, you will find a good selection of imported hand

soaps and health care products. Not to be forgotten are the collections of Royal Family memorabilia, flags, decorative tins and tea accessories. Cristina points out they have expanded their merchandise with some pop culture offerings such as Doctor Who and Harry Potter gift items, Little Miss and Little Mr. books, tins and lunch boxes. St. George’s Day is April 21 and The Celtic Treasure Chest will be on site with a booth at the Roundhouse Community Centre in Yaletown. The “British Invasion” event promises food, entertainment and a whole lot more. The May 19 royal wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle isn’t far off now. To mark the occasion The Celtic Treasure Chest will be carrying collectibles from mugs to plates, fridge magnets and tote bags. Taking on this retail adventure has been extremely rewarding for Cristina and Steve. Cristina says, “We love challenges and learning new things. I am so proud we are able to do this.” The Celtic Treasure Chest 5639 Dunbar Street Vancouver, BC V6N 1W5 Telephone 604-261-3688 www.celtictreasurechest.com

30 Minute Hit Kick and Punch Your Way Into Shape Story by Sarah Gordon

Photos by Sandra Steier

Shannon Hann is the owner of 30 Minute Hit on West 41st Avenue. Four years ago she left behind careers in the public market sector and hospitality industry to kick off a new career in the fitness industry. Shannon says, “I decided to purchase 30 Minute Hit in June of 2014. I was ready to be my own boss and take on the challenges of running my own business. I’ve always been passionate about helping others and I felt this was a great opportunity to really make a difference in women’s lives.” Originally from Northern Ontario, Shannon attended Brock University in St. Catharines where she played on the Varsity Women’s Basketball Team and graduated with a degree in Health Science and Business Administration. After graduating, she travelled across Europe and lived in London, England and Australia before coming back to Canada where she planted roots in Vancouver. 16

“I absolutely love the healing effects of the forest as well as being able to visit places like Whistler, Tofino or the Okanagan in the summer,” she says. Shannon put her athletic and business administration background to good use when she purchased her 30 Minute Hit franchise. What does a 30 Minute Hit workout consist of? It is a high intensity boxing/kickboxing circuit designed just for women. It is challenging, empowering and appeals to all levels of fitness and all ages.

The goal is to provide women with a nonintimidating and friendly environment where they receive an effective and safe workout. www.DunbarLife.com

The program was developed with the needs of the modern woman in mind. Many women are interested in kickboxing and martial arts workouts but have not taken part in these activities for several reasons such as time commitment or the intimidation factor that goes along with regular martial art schools involving both sexes. 30 Minute Hit addresses these realities by offering an effective 30 minute workout with no set class times, a child-minding area, as well as a professional instructor who is with members every step of the way to ensure proper technique at each station, while re-enforcing confidence and creating a culture of empowerment.

“Today, with women leading such busy lives, 30 minutes is often all they can dedicate to physical activity.” Shannon Hann Interval training is one of the most effective forms of exercise to increase metabolism and lose weight. The circuit is designed to get fast, proven, repeatable results. Members who commit to three visits a week see results in a short period of time, from increased strength to weight loss, stress relief, and increased mental and emotional health.

environment for women to make their health a priority. She mentions, “Because the workout is only 30 minutes, most of my members are from the Dunbar, Kerrisdale and Kitsilano areas. Having said that, once you become a member at one location, you are free to use the locations across B.C. and the rest of Canada and the United States. All memberships are unlimited and include free gloves and wraps.” “What I really love about this neighbourhood is its cultural diversity. I meet young people from other countries who are attending school and are living in the neighbourhood. I also meet women who have lived here their entire lives and are now raising their own families.” Shannon is aware that many of the small businesses in the area are still run by individuals and families. She appreciates this and comments, “It is something you see less and less in other areas of Vancouver.”

Shannon says, “At 30 Minute Hit we want to maximize our member’s time and effort by boosting energy levels and building self-confidence. When women feel more energized and confident, it translates directly into their professional and personal lives.”

“We offer a complimentary 30 minute free trial session so you have nothing to lose but self-doubt and everything to gain in confidence.” Shannon Hann Shannon is extremely grateful to have the opportunity to create a safe and positive www.DunbarLife.com

succeed and join our amazing community.” Whynn Mallette is also thrilled with the results. She says, “I have lost 67 pounds and a whole bunch of inches not to mention I am more confident than I have ever been.”

30 Minute Hit has an incredible team of motivated and energetic trainers who are committed to helping its community of women reach their goals. While Shannon is busy administering the business she remarks, ”It is very important to keep regular training hours on the floor because I love connecting on a personal level with members and watching their transformations both physically and emotionally.” Members’ testimonials speak for themselves; Lindsay Forestell has glowing words to share. “It is an amazing, energetic atmosphere. Whether it is the trainers or the other members hitting with you, I never leave without a smile. I’ve lost over 40 pounds and it motivated me to run a halfmarathon and sign up for a another. Every woman in the gym is rooting for you to

18

Carlotta Ritchie concurs, “I have lost weight and increased muscle tone which forces me to unabashedly make people look at my flexed arms. I figure at 68 years old I don’t have to be modest about physical accomplishments. I have gained self-confidence and a sense of well-being.” Shannon concludes, “The best part of my job has always been being able to help reveal to women the power they already have inside themselves. Seeing the difference in a women’s self-confidence from the beginning of their free trial to their sense of accomplishment after they finish will always be such a rewarding experience for me.” 30 Minute Hit 3516 West 41st Avenue Vancouver, BC V6N 3E6 Telephone 604-569-3233 www.30minutehit.com/kerrisdale

Residential Gardening Professionals

www.HigherGroundGardens.com Stress Less: Garden Drought Solution Over the last few years our Vancouver summers have become surprisingly hot and dry. The result is that many expensive, cherished plants, hedges and trees become stressed and die due to lack of available water. The situation worsens once the City’s watering restrictions come into effect. Scientists are predicting these long, hot summer periods, which can bring so much damage, may be with us to stay. There is something homeowners can do to greatly improve to the health of their gardens. Topdressing garden beds with composted bark mulch is by far the best value for money you can spend in your garden. When we started our gardening company 10 years ago, not many homeowners had heard of mulch. Now, bark mulch is being used regularly on nearly all of our gardens. Heavyweight green-thumb Brian Minter always encourages the use of mulch.

Saving water starts with preventing evaporation by installing mulch in early spring. Your gardens will retain the moisture they’ve accumulated during the rainy season. Mulching your garden after a thorough weeding also helps keep weeds down. A thick 3-4” layer of composted bark mulch creates a protective layer that helps block the sun’s heat, seals in moisture and prevents evaporation. Bark Mulch acts as an insulator for the garden, keeping the root structures and garden beds cool in the summer months. With less heat comes less evaporation meaning more moisture is retained after watering and therefore absorbed by your plants. You can think of bark mulch as a sort of sunscreen/blanket for your garden. It protects the roots of the plants from both the hot rainless summer droughts and also insulates against winter’s cold nights.

Kirkland Metal Shop Ltd. A Family Business Story by Christa Andersen

Photos submitted

Christa Andersen, established 1984. The year I became a daughter, a sister, and future employee of Kirkland Metal Shop. Barney and Nancy Andersen (aka my heroes…aka my bosses) are the definition of grit, perseverance and love. They didn’t just pass on these qualities to their four children; they poured every ounce of it into their business and community. I was too young to remember my dad and his one employee hauling furnaces from our garage to jobs. I was crawling between my mom’s feet as she ran the business from our kitchen table, crunching numbers on her word processor. But I do remember when they took their modest home based business and their unwavering passion and took over a historic and respected heating company. Kirkland Metal Shop Ltd, established 1921. The year the Kirkland family established a necessary and revered local business. They

paved the way for all heating companies that followed. Years later, the torch would be passed and the Andersen family would continue the Kerrisdale legacy. Nancy and Barney made their own mark in Vancouver’s history. They roamed the halls of Prince of Wales Secondary School, ice skated at Kerrisdale Arena, and grew up in Vancouver Specials. I consider them the OG’s (#GoogleIt) of Dunbar. For them Kirkland was never just a business opportunity, it was a dream, a chance to honour history while making a future. As their daughter, their employee, and a Vancouverite to the core, I am never more proud than when I meet people and they say they know Kirkland Metal Shop. Better yet, when they tell me we’ve been in their house, serviced their furnace, installed their fireplace, and they know my dad! My favourite is; “Barney’s your dad?! Ah man, he’s awesome, he installed our furnace, that’s so cool!” It never gets old. The kid in

me thinks, “Yep, my dad’s the coolest!” The adult in me is so grateful to have worked in my family business for the last 13 years (not counting the years I only coloured on work orders and spun around on office chairs with my sister).

“I was literally born to do this.” I’ve learned the integral part of what being a local business is about; it’s not just about knowing the community you live and work in, it’s about becoming the community and becoming a trustworthy staple in people’s homes. We’ve lived in Dunbar for forty years. We operated our business in Kerrisdale for thirty. Kirkland Metal Shop (aka Kirkland Heating & Cooling) is celebrating 96 years

of business this year. We may have relocated our store front, but that will never change the fact that our roots are forever embedded in the infamous tree lined streets of Dunbar, the historical train tracks of Kerrisdale (now the Arbutus Greenway) and in the homes of our fellow Vancouverites. On behalf of my family and the entire Kirkland team, we thank you for your trust, loyalty and continued support. And I’d like to personally thank you, for being a part of the creation of my own family’s history. Southlands Heritage Farm Grow. Educate. Protect. Story by Sarah Gordon

Photos by Sandra Steier

Big city life can cause people to lose track of the simple things, like taking time to slow down and appreciate nature. Fortunately for Dunbar there are many parks to gravitate to, but did you know that you don’t have to travel outside of the area to visit a very active farm complete with bountiful harvests, a menagerie of farm animals and educational opportunities galore?

roadside selling our produce and eggs to passers-by. Soon Diana Emrick from down the road joined in our lemonade stand type business. She sat with us and sold her famous pies, jams and cookies. Other neighbours joined in the market too, selling their homemade or grown delicacies. Volunteers came down to help us out, and we started to grow!”

Head south on Balaclava Street and at the corner of West 51st Avenue you will find Southlands Heritage Farm. Jennifer and Rick Maynard are the owners; they have lived in the neighbourhood for generations, but the idea of creating Southlands Heritage Farm bloomed in the spring of 2008.

The staff and volunteers are an integral part of the farm’s many operations and Jennifer and Rick appreciate each and every one of them.

Their original vision was to intensively farm their backyard (a separate property located nearby) in a sustainable way to demonstrate that food security is possible within the city. Jennifer says, “We felt awkward in our first summer as we took turns sitting on the

26

The Maynards are long-term Southlands residents; Rick was born across the street from the farm, and Jennifer moved to the area as a teenager. One reason they purchased the farm was to save the existing heritage daffodil orchard. In the 1920s the market garden supplied cut flowers to local florists.

If you visit in the spring you will still see hundreds of naturalized daffodils growing. In the autumn the farm is a pumpkin pickers’ paradise. Three enterprises operate on Southlands Heritage Farm’s 1.6-acre parcel of land: Southlands Heritage Farm, Southlands Therapeutic Riding Society (STaRS) and Pony Meadows. The Maynards are extremely grateful to their son Jordan. Jennifer says, “The whole farm idea was Jordan’s. All the structures were imagined and built by him and all the educational programmes devised by him.” The farm offers a wide range of educational programs that teach people of all ages about food systems and farm life. Armed with this knowledge, the goal is to help people make sustainable food choices. www.DunbarLife.com

Programs are also designed to inspire children and their parents to care for the planet, the land and animals. Sharing the knowledge of how to farm sustainably is vital; without farms there is no food.

Head farmer Sam Vermeulen says, “There are so many people you can learn so much from here. And we learn a lot too.” Farmer Markets are held every Friday during the summer. Organically grown, non-GMO produce includes everything from beets, to beans, kale, radishes, blueberries, plum, figs, rhubarb, lettuce, garlic, squash, chard, cucumbers, tomatoes and plant starts (basil and tomatoes). Free-range eggs in pretty pastel colours are sold year round, and before long veggies and fruit will be available at the market. 27

Farm camps are a popular choice for children wishing to learn how to care for animals, connect with nature and learn about healthy ways of life. Camps are held in the spring and summer for 6 to 16 year olds. See Southlands Farm’s website for more information.

The farm is also home to STaRS, a therapeutic horseback-riding program that was founded in 2000. This not for profit society is designed for children and adults with special needs who require alternative forms of therapy to aid in their physical, cognitive, emotional and social development. Office coordinator Christine Van Poelgeest manages the society’s fundraising. She says, “This is sanctuary for STaRS kids. They have a sense of belonging.” Maynard’s Pony Meadows offers a variety of horse riding lessons for riders of all ages. They also offer spring and summer camps to accommodate both beginner and more advanced campers. All campers gain hands on experience; they learn how to feed and care for ‘their’ pony as well as the basics of horse back riding. Judith Bouniol is the farm’s education director. Like all of Southlands’ staff she is passionate about this special place. Year round farm education occurs. She mentions last year 83 schools visited the farm, amounting to 3,000 children who participated in educational field trips. They come from far and wide; some schools like North Vancouver’s Windsor House come twice a week to the farm year round and use the farm as a teaching facility. Preschool classes are mesmerized by the wonder of it all. A walk across the farm to visit the Nubian goats becomes an adventure with stops along the way to observe insects and plants in an unhurried fashion. 28

Looking for a unique birthday party experience? Your child can spend their special day exploring with friends while meeting the sheep, chickens, bees and ponies, baking animal treats or learning to ride. Sleepovers are held in the eighteen-stall barn’s hayloft or groups can camp in the orchard. Children love participating in farm chores such as collecting eggs and feeding the animals. Judith mentions the magical experience of spending a night at the farm. She says, “It’s so quiet at night. It’s quite an experience to sleep here and be in the boots of a farmer.” If you have never visited, make sure you do – the friendly Southlands team love to share the farm with visitors. Come say hello to the chickens, goats, sheep, horses and donkey – you can even jump into a straw pile if you desire. Southlands Heritage Farm is a place where you can leave behind the distractions of urban life and get back to nature. DUNBAR LIFE: Ask An Expert: How Can I Consign My Clothes?

Otherwise, if you can’t make it then, drop-off your folded and bagged items anytime during store hours and we’ll price and sell them based on our expertise and 25 years in the consignment business. Items we don’t accept can be picked up within 10 days, or donated directly through us to one of the three community charities we support. We’ll discount your pieces monthly, seasonally, and send any that don’t sell to charity at the end of the season unless you collect them. Once your items sell, receive 40% of the selling price in-person at anytime by cheque or use your earnings for in-store purchases!

To consign with us, simply bring in fifteen or more (Banana Republic price point or higher) clean, seasonal, in like-new condition pieces purchased within the last two years, any Monday, Wednesday, or Friday between 10am – 3pm.

DUNBAR LIFE: Ask An Expert: Which tea is best for you? No matter what the season, tea can be a tasty beverage since it can be served iced or hot. But its benefits go far beyond refreshment. There is plenty of research showing that drinking tea can actually improve your health. At the very least, it’s a flavorful way of getting enough fluid into your body each day. On top of that, studies have shown teas can help protect your teeth and your heart, as well as possibly even helping to stave off cancer. Which type of tea you drink can make a difference. Dunbar Greetings sells Caffeine Free Fruity Teas that offer antioxidants, polyphenols and vitamins. Herbal Teas heal and soothe the body. Rooibos is caffeine free and is a healthy alternative to soft drinks. Black Teas were created for the tea loving population of England. It boosts heart health and lowers stress hormones. Green Teas are high in antioxidants and loaded with nutrients that have powerful effects on the body. The key ingredient of caffeine is a stimulant which improves brain function. Health & Wellness Teas are great for arthritis, skin conditions, aids digestion and detoxes. www.DunbarLife.com
