A Message from DVBA Mysha Dewar-McClelland, President of the Dunbar Village Business Association Welcome to the Fall issue of Dunbar Life! The DVBA held another successful Annual General Meeting in June at which time our volunteer Board of Directors was elected. I would like to take this opportunity to personally thank Karen Wyder for her exceptional leadership as President of the DVBA for the past three years. The Board held its first meeting last month and it was my pleasure to be elected DVBA President. There are nine other business and property owners on this hard-working Board and we look forward to implementing initiatives that are important to Dunbar businesses. I would like to say a big thank you to our Dunbar businesses who generously contributed to a ‘Welcome to the Neighbourhood’ package for the residents of The Ivy on Dunbar. The response from businesses was overwhelming. Our annual Harvest Festival will be held on Saturday, September 9th from 11am to 3pm. The DVBA organizes this event as a way of thanking Dunbar residents for all of their support throughout the year. The DVBA will be bringing back the popular scavenger hunt that takes place in all three areas of Dunbar Village. Visit www.dunbarvillage.ca for all the details. Don’t miss the talented performers who will be on the Shoppers Drug Mart stage during Harvest Fest. The amazing Bollywood performer, Karima Esa, is back by popular demand. Also returning are the talented kids from Lights Up Musical Theatre School. Two new exciting groups to Dunbar this year are The Blues Berries and RupLoops! The Blues Berries will simultaneously entertain and

6

educate by performing classic blues-rock. RupLoops performed sold-out shows at the Vancouver Children’s Festival this year. Rup performs a live-looping multicultural show and uses his diverse skills as a musician to create a pulsating, entertaining and engaging musical experience. Read more about these entertainers on page 4. In this issue of Dunbar Life we feature three businesses and our Champion of Dunbar Village. JR Justesen, a physiotherapist and trainer, is the new owner of Vibes Fitness. Not only does he operate the Dunbar studio but he also has three franchises in Victoria and more coming soon to Vancouver! The second business owner featured is Dr. Anna Pranata, a friendly and caring dentist who is committed to providing exceptional dental care to her patients. Dr. Pranata owns and operates Dunbar Dental Centre located across from Save-On-Foods. The third business story spotlights Light Healing located on Dunbar Street near W. 17th Avenue. The clinic is operated by Carolyne Abrams, a London-trained osteopathic practitioner. Our Champion of Dunbar Village is the Dunbar Branch Library. Read about this important social hub that has been an integral part of the neighbourhood since 1950. I look forward to seeing the Dunbar community celebrate at Harvest Festival. It’s going to be a wonderful celebration with something for everyone! P.S. Be sure to notice the new fall banners that will be going up in Dunbar Village after Labour Day!

Vibes Fitness: Transforming Lives For the Better Story by Sarah Gordon

Photos by Sandra Steier

Are you looking for a unique workout that can benefit you no matter what your present fitness level may be? Vibration exercise may be just what you’ve been searching for. JR Justesen is the enthusiastic and multitalented physiotherapist who not only owns Parkway Physiotherapy + Performance Centre in Victoria but also purchased Vibes Fitness earlier this year. He holds the title of physiotherapist and president of the company. There are currently three franchised locations in Victoria in addition to the one right here in Dunbar, which is both a studio and serves as the company’s franchise sales centre. JR comments, “I purchased Vibes Fitness because I believe in the ability of this technology to provide a platform for people to work hard to safely gain strength, flexibility, balance and mobility, no matter their age. As a physio for many years, it is clear that there are fewer options for seniors 12

to stay healthy and fit with good balance, muscle mass, circulation and mobility. I wanted to keep helping people and had used vibration training in our clinic so was familiar with the science and the great benefits it can offer people of all ages and fitness levels.” Dunbar was selected as the first Vancouver location based on similarities it shares with the Victoria studios; both areas have golf courses nearby (Vibes workouts are popular with golfers) and similar demographics.

“My vision for this company is to bring clinical science to the field and to nurture, train and support the franchise owners and trainers of the Vibes family.” JR Justesen

www.DunbarLife.com | September 1 - November 15, 2017

“They are transforming lives for the better each and every day,” he adds. JR’s focus as company president is to bring his medical background to the franchisees and trainers so that they can offer the most effective training programs to their clients. JR is also a trainer and spends time with members doing assessments and workouts. What exactly is a vibration workout and what does it entail? Vibration exercise is simply performing exercise on a vibration platform. Since the platform moves up and down it increases gravity and stimulates muscle reflexes. These factors combine to increase muscle recruitment, strength, balance, mobility and circulation. Workouts are quick; they generally take 15 to 20 minutes. It can take a yoga slant where the emphasis is on holding poses and range of motion or it can take a strength and conditioning slant where a client performs push-up, squats, lunges and planks on the vibration platform in a circuit type of workout.

Typically three or four people workout in the small studio at one time which allows for plenty of individual attention. Clients receive ample personal care to ensure they have an enjoyable experience, exercise with correct form and their workouts progress in a safe manner to achieve their goals. Who can benefit from working out at Vibes? JR says, “Anybody who can benefit from weight bearing strength exercise can benefit from vibration training. Younger athletes who do the same exercises on vibration or nonvibrating platforms see small gains in comparison whereas older adults typically see significantly greater gains. We do not know why this is but it appears to relate to the increase in growth hormone and testosterone.” Vibes Fitness studio is clean, elegantly appointed and provides a spa like atmosphere.

Nancy Mann www.DunbarLife.com | September 1 - November 15, 2017

JR Justesen 13

Potential members receive a free one-week trial where they attend three times. A trainer will meet to discuss goals, injury history and your training background. Many people feel a difference after as few as three workouts. Members typically attend one to three times per week. Those who come once per week are usually incorporating vibration training with other fitness activities such as tennis, golf, dance, Pilates and jogging. Those who attend three times per week usually have made Vibes their primary strength and circuit training studio. JR and trainer Nancy Mann run the Dunbar studio. Regarding the Dunbar community JR remarks, “Dunbar still has the vibe of mom

14

and pop stores which we love. People have been very kind to us and are very welcoming to me personally and also as a business person.” JR is extremely grateful to be able to help improve and change people’s lives. He says, “This is true of being a physiotherapist and also of being a Vibes trainer. When one can make a living helping people it is a very fine thing indeed.” Vibes Fitness 5628 Dunbar Street Vancouver, BC V6N 1W7 Telephone 604-428-8423 www.vibesfitness.ca

Dunbar Dental Centre:

A Warm Approach to Dentistry Story by Sarah Gordon

Photos by Sandra Steier

Dr. Anna Pranata is the friendly and caring dentist who owns and operates Dunbar Dental Centre, which has been part of the community for close to 30 years. She took over the care of long-time owner Dr. Meredith Moore’s patients two years ago. She admits it wasn’t her childhood dream to become a dentist. Art had always interested Dr. Pranata although she also dabbled in science, and this is where her post secondary studies led her. On a whim, while attending the University of Manitoba she wrote the DAT (Dental Aptitude Test), was accepted, and later realized how much she enjoyed dentistry. Born and raised in Winnipeg, Dr. Pranata practiced dentistry in her home city until moving with her husband to Vancouver in 2012. After working for several years for a downtown dental office she decided it was time to have her own practice. She discovered 18

the well-established Dunbar Dental Centre needed a new owner and thought this vibrant neighbourhood was an ideal location. “I was attracted to a small practice with well cared for patients,” she says.

Dr. Pranata, her two assistants, hygienist and receptionist warmly welcome patients. The general dentistry services include exams, cleaning, fillings, crowns, wisdom tooth removal and root canal treatments. In addition, the busy dental centre handles cosmetic dentistry, emergency visits and custom sports guards and night guards. For anxious patients, both young and adult, she offers nitrous oxide which helps to alleviate a lot of the fear associated with dentistry.

www.DunbarLife.com | September 1 - November 15, 2017

Dr. Pranata is committed to providing exceptional dental care to her patients by partnering with them in their oral health care. She believes in discussing dental solutions and developing personalized treatment plans that inspire confidence and suits her patients’ needs.

“It is my goal to help make what is confusing understandable so you have the information to take control of your oral health.” Dr. Pranata Velscope oral cancer screening is another service offered which goes above and beyond a regular check that dentists carry out during exams. The Velscope makes use of fluorescence visualization technology to help dentists identify abnormal tissue including cancerous and pre-cancerous lesions that otherwise might not be detected by the naked eye. When should you schedule your child’s first visit to the dentist? She encourages parents to bring their infants to see her within six months of their first tooth appearing or at the one-year mark.

Coming in at an early age is important so they feel comfortable visiting the dentist before a problem arises. Parents also benefit from these visits where they can ask questions and seek advice to lay the groundwork for proper dental care at home.

www.DunbarLife.com | September 1 - November 15, 2017

19

Dunbar Dental Centre’s team enjoys hosting visits from preschools and daycare centres. Kids tour the office and participate in fun brushing exercises, and learn about dental hygiene and healthy snacks. Young children are very receptive; Dr. Pranata mentions that she hears reports about little ones who go home and teach their parents what they learned such as mastering the art of flossing. Giving back is important to Dr. Pranata. She has participated in dental missions to provide free dental care in places where it is not very accessible. She travelled to Guatemala three times for dental missions. The treatments often involved extractions to prevent infection from spreading. She found the experiences rewarding and was moved to see people with so little so generous and full of joy. She also offered her services on a voluntary basis at Vancouver’s East Side Dental Clinic. Dr. Pranata has had the opportunity to meet and treat individuals who suffer from substance use disorder or who simply need a bit of extra help.

20

Although she does not live in Dunbar she spends a great deal of her time here. Dr. Pranata says, “It’s like a small town with a true community feel. It seems like everyone knows each other. Patients run into their friends in the waiting room. Clients say hello to me on the street. I shop at Stong’s Market. My husband and I really enjoy watching movies at Dunbar Theatre. We love the seats!” When not working she enjoys a full range of outdoor activities that a West Coast lifestyle offers from snowboarding at Whistler, to hiking and taking her dog for a run around Pacific Spirit Park or Kits Beach. Dunbar Dental Centre actively participates in community events including the Salmonberry Days Festival and Dunbar Village Business Association’s Harvest Festival. What does Dr. Pranata enjoy most about her business? She replies with a big smile, “Meeting new people and forming meaningful relationships. This is important to the staff too.” Dunbar Dental Centre 215-3540 W 41st Avenue Vancouver, BC V6N 3E6 Telephone 604-261-2220 www.dunbardental.ca

Residential Gardening Professionals

www.HigherGroundGardens.com Enjoy the Coolest Gardening Season Begin Fall Gardening Once the mercury drops and days shorten, trees will provide what rakes and bins will conquer. Take the gradual approach and keep loads light. Weed garden beds thoroughly in between rakings. Plant new shrubs and perennials early on – fall is ideal for root growth. Plant lots of bulbs, especially daffodils, in a sunny well-drained spot. Cut back herbaceous perennials, leaving late bloomers to put on a show. Supplement any colour with pansies, mums and kale. Trim and prune hedges and shrubs for winter Be sure to shape hedges of all varieties by mid October. Allow plants time to harden off. Shrubs and hedges will also their shape for many months, getting you more value the earlier you trim.

Mulching Saves Plants Covering garden beds with composted mulch is by far the best money you can spend in your garden. This applies especially to new plantings and boxwood hedges. Blanket all garden beds with a nutrient rich mulch to get them through another potentially harsh winter. Fruit Trees Apply lime to the base of trees in fall, allowing the chemical process to take place throughout winter. It generally takes 6 months for lime to change soil pH, when using dolomitic lime. By spring, your tree will be primed for production. Collect all your fruit to avoid attracting pests. Have fun canning, cooking, eating and sharing the bounty!

Carlson Wagonlit Travel Kerrisdale: Make Your Travel Dreams Come True Story by Sarah Gordon

Travel has always been Nimet Jessa’s passion; she started working in the travel industry many years ago and has not strayed from her career choice. Originally from Tanzania, Nimet remembers a time when there was no such thing as organized safari tours in her homeland; adventures of this type appealed to her and may have helped lead her to her profession. Today Nimet is president of Carlson Wagonlit Travel Kerrisdale. She joined the Carlson Wagonlit Travel franchise in 1994 after operating her own independent agency in Kerrisdale for a number of years. Carlson Wagonlit Travel is a global franchise with over 5,000 agencies worldwide and has offices in more than 150 countries. Carlson Wagonlit Travel Kerrisdale specializes in leisure travel. With easy access to websites you may question why you need assistance from a travel agent when you can go online and take care of matters yourself? Saving money is one of the key reasons to work with Carlson Wagonlit Travel Kerrisdale. This large travel agency has buying power, which allows the company to negotiate the very best hotel and airline rates. 28

Nimet and her staff can see the big picture and arrange many fine details that go into planning a trip. This team of travel professionals each have between 20 to 30 years of experience – they are seasoned travellers and are familiar with different regions of the world.

The travel agency excels in custom tours. If your dream is to climb Mount Kilimanjaro with a private tour guide they can make it happen.

Light Healing:

Physical, Emotional and Spiritual Healing Story by Sarah Gordon

Photos by Sandra Steier

If you don’t know what osteopathy is, Carolyne Abrams the friendly osteopathic practitioner who operates the Light Healing clinic admits she had no idea either when she first heard of it in her early 20s. “While I was working in a natural food store in Toronto I met someone who had gone to a naturopathic and osteopathic college in London, England. I was very interested in naturopathy and decided to go to the college. When I went I had no idea what osteopathy was! Once I got there, I found I had an aptitude for the hands-on work of osteopathy and focussed on that aspect of natural healing,” she says. Carolyne moved to Vancouver in 2004 after studying and living in England for almost 17 years. Prior to moving to Vancouver she worked as an osteopathic practitioner in New Zealand for one year. She established her Dunbar practice in 2011, which is located in the Pacific Mountain Centre at Dunbar Street and W. 17th Avenue. The centre includes three psychologists and a massage therapist.

Carolyne is an osteopathic practitioner and energy healer. She explains, “I use a number of healing

32

modalities in my practice and treat all body structures. Some physical techniques I use include soft tissue work such as massage, joint mobilizations and pressure points to release tight muscles. The more subtle techniques I use include working with the energy flow in the body to maximize the health, vitality and nutrition of the cells and organs.” For the past 27 years Carolyne has continued to develop her work and now incorporates healing practices from many spiritual traditions. She points out, “These practices work powerfully and synergistically with the cranial osteopathy and structural osteopathy training that remain strong tools within my Light Healing practice.” “The benefit of having both physical and energetic healing techniques is that I’m able to approach an injury, condition, or structural problem on all levels as appropriate: physical, emotional, and spiritual, ” Carolyne says. One of the modalities Carolyne uses in her practice is cranial osteopathy. To stimulate healing, gentle hand pressure and intention is used to release blockages preventing full function and expression of that tissue.

First hand experience with an injury led Carolyne to explore cranial osteopathy.

www.DunbarLife.com | September 1 - November 15, 2017

“My experience of cranial osteopathy started in my second year of college when I was treated with cranial osteopathy following a wrist and shoulder injury. These injuries were threatening my ability to do osteopathy so I sought treatment from an experienced practitioner. After a few sessions my injuries were healed and I was able to complete my osteopathic training. From this experience I decided to add cranial osteopathy as a treatment modality. I took post-graduate courses in cranial osteopathy as well as training in pediatric cranial osteopathy.

Clients often come to Light Healing when they’ve tried the conventional medical route and have not been satisfied with the results, or when they’d like a different approach. Even when having medical treatment clients often want treatment to help to maintain their health and vitality. Carolyne reports, “I see this particularly with clients who are undergoing treatment for cancer. As well, I’ve been in practice long enough that many clients come to me first when something goes wrong; either to eliminate the need to see a doctor or to start the healing process right away.”

Her clients range from babies in the womb to seniors. Intrauterine treatment of babies usually relates to optimal positioning for birth. It can also help move the baby to a more comfortable position for the mother during pregnancy. She treats many newborns after a difficult pregnancy or birth that may cause colic, feeding and sleeping problems. Women come for treatment of menstrual difficulties as well as issues during or after pregnancy. For both women and men, treatment for problems resulting from car accidents is common. Seniors can have difficulties with mobility due to arthritis and osteopathy helps keep them mobile.

For Carolyne satisfaction comes from giving babies and children the best possible start to life. It also comes from seeing adults recover from an injury or acute condition or helping them cope more successfully with a chronic condition. When asked if it takes a special kind of person to do this work Carolyne humbly answers, “I like to use the analogy of playing the piano. Everyone can learn to do it; however, some people have more of an aptitude for it than others. I’m fortunate to be one of those with an aptitude for this kind of work. I continue to develop my abilities through study, experience and meditation.” From September 1 to October 31 Carolyne is offering a special back to school and work discount of 10% off to new patients.

Champion of Dunbar Village: Dunbar Branch Library Story by Sarah Gordon

Photos by Sandra Steier

Dunbar Library opened in 1950. It is one of Dunbar’s key social hubs and is an integral part of the neighhourhood, one for which residents feel a strong sense of ownership. Located in the heart of central Dunbar, it has a high street feel where people run into each other and chat. Janet Tomkins is the Branch Head at Dunbar Library; she lives locally and grew up here. She fondly refers to the neighbourhood library as “My growing up branch.” She has been with Vancouver Public Library (VPL) for many years, and has been working at Dunbar Library since 2014. She says, “I’ve come full circle. It’s interesting to revisit my roots.” Incremental changes have taken place at the branch over the years. Twenty-five years ago, a renovation created new workrooms, and there have been some changes to the public area as well, however the footprint has largely remained the same. As Bob Dylan sings, “The Times They Are a-Changin.” Overall VPL is seeing a shift in borrowing patterns, as library patrons explore new ways of reading books and accessing information. Mark Koep is Acting Manager, Neighbourhood Services at VPL and works closely with several Vancouver Public Library branches. He says, “There are some items you can’t get in print any more. Some are published first as e-books. Others don’t make it to paper.” There is a balance between those who are

die-hard print book lovers versus those who gravitate towards e-books. There is no particular demographic steering this shift; both Janet and Mark indicate all ages are tech savvy and are embracing e-books.

Library usage has changed over the years. Mark mentions, “The internet has fundamentally changed our jobs. We spend more time helping people with their devices so they can help themselves.” He observes that “seniors like to ask for help. They have the time and they are very patient. It’s lovely — they are good students.” “The interests and expectations from the public have gone up. The demand for meeting space and programming is on the rise,” Janet says. “Today it’s a place to study and to attend story time. There is a demand for desk space for people who don’t have home offices. They are looking for somewhere to work on their laptops.” Dunbar Library offers programming for every stage of life from baby and caregivers programs to family literacy, school age programs and summer reading programs for children. Daycare and preschools are invited to come in and they will be introduced to the library and its services.

Janet mentions, “We are interested in exploring and connecting with seniors in our neighbourhood.” In addition, they take programs out of the library and into the community; for example, librarians visit Musqueam Childcare Centre on a monthly basis. Other programming has taken place off site including a writing program held at Dunbar

displays and literary tie ins. For other events, such as the Salmonberry Days Festival, staff attends and sets up a booth to join in the fun.

“It is important to explore who is using the library and who isn’t and see how they can benefit. We invite people to come in and we will explain what we do.” Mark Koep

Janet appreciates the generosity of local businesses for their donations of refreshments and food for assorted events the library either hosts or participates in. When Dunbar Library celebrated its 65th anniversary in 2015 the business community also loaned support with donations of food and prizes.

Accessible Services is a department that reaches out to people who are not able to visit the library in person including vulnerable seniors and library users with mobility challenges and/or print disabilities who live in the City of Vancouver. People who qualify for this service may receive home deliveries and also have access to alternative formats such as e-books. More information is available on the VPL’s website at www.vpl.ca.

As a Champion of Dunbar Village, the Dunbar Library holds memories for long time Dunbar residents and is creating fresh memories for new and young Dunbarites. While the times they are a-changin’ it is apparent Dunbar Library is adapting and responding to the rapid technological developments and change in usage patterns that the 21st century has brought its way. Thank you, Dunbar Library, for being a true community anchor.

Participating in community events is an important method of outreach and supporting the Dunbar neighbourhood. During Dunbar Village Business Association events such as the annual Harvest Festival, the library holds themed story times, crafts, www.DunbarLife.com | September 1 - November 15, 2017
