Publisher's Note Hello, August! Here we are in mid-summer. It’s the perfect season to relax and get a healthy dose of Vitamin D. There is no better place to unwind than Steveston Village with its sea breezes and casual atmosphere. How did you survive the heatwave? We are witnessing eye-opening climate-related events both locally and globally. The extreme heat and numerous forest fires throughout B.C. are a strong reminder that we must be respectful of our delicate environment. Things are progressing nicely with B.C.’s COVID19 Restart Plan: Step 3 is halfway through and the planned date to move to Step 4 is September 7. Businesses are cautiously and slowly trying to return to normal. The Steveston Merchants Association looks forward to safely planning the following fall and winter events – the Steveston Scarecrow Crawl, Trick or Treating in the Village, Girls’ Night Out, Holiday Window Contest, Santa’s arrival by boat, Christmas Car Cruise, and partnering with Tourism for Winter in the Village.

On the cover is Cathy Cheung, the owner of Sinfully The Best, with her general manager Anita Schultz, sitting in front of the store’s new location on No. 1 Road. This is the village’s go-to destination for gifts, special occasions, seasonal treats, or simply to satisfy your craving. In this issue, we also feature Todd Jury who recently took ownership of Steveston Village Orthopaedic and Sports Therapy Clinic, which is rebranding as Steveston Physiotherapy. Greg Cassap ran the successful business for the last 31 years and continues to work at the clinic. There is not much activity to report in the village as businesses have been stable since our last issue. From picnics at Garry Point to evening walks along the dyke trails and patio dining at some of Richmond’s best restaurants, there is no question, Steveston is at its prime in the summertime.

SINFULLY THE BEST:

Ten Years of Sensational Chocolate Story by Sarah Gordon

Photos by Carolynne Palla

When two stores close, another store opens. Chocoholics and baked good lovers are rejoicing at the news that Sinfully The Best has consolidated their two locations into one new and significantly larger space on No. 1 Road. Here you will find decadent hand-crafted chocolates, cookies, and cakes. The expansion is an exciting prospect for Steveston as Sinfully The Best is the village’s go-to destination for gifts, special occasions, seasonal treats, or simply to satisfy your own craving. Sinfully The Best has been Steveston’s purveyor

of delectable artisan chocolate for 10 years. Owner Cathy Cheung trained as a pastry chef at Toronto’s Ryerson University. She initially did not work in the profession; instead, she pursued a career as an accountant but was eventually pulled back to her culinary dream.

In May 2011, the charming shop opened on the corner of No. 1 Road and Chatham Street. This began the adventure of introducing Steveston to Sinfully The Best’s award-winning bonbons. The original storefront was tiny—the chocolate kitchen measured six feet by six feet and was located behind the retail counter. In 2012, Sinfully The Best acquired the adjacent retail unit, allowing them to double their space and greatly expand their production area.

Sinfully The Best is a proud member of the Steveston Merchants Association. Cathy attributes some of the business’s success to the SMA’s Girls’ Night Out event, which also began in 2011. Each year GNO attendees have loyally lined up outside the shop waiting to get into the store and they, along with many devoted customers, return on a regular basis. In 2017, Sinfully Too opened with a focus on custom baked goods such as exquisite cakes and cookies to celebrate a multitude of occasions and seasonal celebrations. Fast forward to 2021, the new No. 1 Road store has roughly 25 per cent more floor space than both of the previous stores combined. Cathy says, “The best part is to have all the staff working together again, and greater convenience for our customers as well.” She remarks, “There is retail space for our customers to explore. We now have two kitchens, one for nut-free chocolate production and the other for baked goods and chocolate products containing nuts. We have many exciting and tasty new products being tested right now—stay tuned for more details.”

August - September 2021

“The shop has been completely renovated with the goal of creating a space that is bright, warm, and welcoming, to bring back memories of childhood, a sort of comfort food for the spirit.”

All of Sinfully The Best’s products are made in-house using quality ingredients and no preservatives. Cathy feels very fortunate to have had many staff members with the business since the early days. General manager Anita Schultz and head chocolatier Dorothy Suen have been there since the very first day. The number of employees has grown from about five during the early years, to 13 to 15 during peak seasons such as Christmas. During non-pandemic times, staff members are given the opportunity to attend a three-day course at Montreal’s Academy of Chocolate. While there, they also tour the facility where one million pounds of chocolate is produced daily. The cakes, cupcakes, and cookies are original, and stunning with their fine details. Name a theme and the talented pastry staff has likely made it, and if not, Nicole Monette and her pastry team will be eager to create it. Memorable custom cakes include an RCMP cake for a special retirement party, and a wedding cake with a handmade topper featuring the bride, groom, and their bulldog; many more magnificent creations can be viewed on the business’s Instagram page. Numerous delectable treats are housed in the bonbon display case including Passionate Lust

10

(white chocolate, passion fruit ganache, tropical and tart, balanced by the sweetness of the white chocolate), Secret Pride (dark chocolate with lavender and peppermint ganache), and regular and salted caramels (they melt in your mouth, and don’t stick to your teeth). Chocolate houses are always a top seller at Christmas and the recently introduced chocolate igloos are a close second. Boxes made from chocolate are a year-round favourite.

One customer proposed by hiding an engagement ring inside a chocolate box.

August - September 2021

Good stories abound from happy customers. Anita recalls, “We especially love the time when a customer shared that she “accidentally” ate a box of chocolate bonbons that was meant as a gift. She wanted to check inside the box to make sure that the bonbons were “okay” because this was for someone special. By the time she finished “checking,” she had consumed them all. She came back the next day for a new box for her friend and, of course, bought another box just for herself, a larger box. What makes the story funny was that she usually purchases bonbons as gifts for friends but had never tasted them until that day.” She adds, “There is a family that comes in whenever there is a celebration in the family. They each get a box of chocolates. With eight to nine family members ordering individual boxes and enjoying samples while waiting for their turns, it makes a fun outing for them. We certainly enjoy seeing them every time.” The greatest reward for Sinfully The Best’s staff is seeing satisfied customers leave the store smiling, and giddy with anticipation to unbox and consume their purchases.

Cathy feels touched when customers take pride in the store. August - September 2021

“They introduce their friends and families to our shop and help sell our products with their pride and enthusiasm. One young customer was so excited to bring his grandparents to the store when they visited from out of town. He showed them everything in the store and described all the products in detail. By the end of the visit, I was ready to hire him on the spot. Unfortunately, he was only nine years old at the time,” Cathy says with a laugh. Giving back to the community that supports them is important. Every Christmas, Sinfully The Best comes up with different fundraising events to raise money for the Richmond Food Bank; they hold raffles, gingerbread house contests and DIY advent calendars, and more. They also set aside a budget for sponsorship and donations for local organizations. Sinfully The Best’s team is extremely appreciative of their customers’ support during the difficult pandemic months. Cathy says, “We look forward to seeing everyone at our new store.” Here’s to many more years of keeping Stevestonites smiling and elated as they enter and exit this sinfully tempting shop! ASK A STEVESTON INSIDER Is there really a trusted source of health information on the Internet?

There is absolutely no replacement for a licensed physician or pharmacist when it comes to reliable information regarding your health. In Canada, a doctor completes a minimum of 7 years of university education before they are eligible to write the licensing exam, and receiving further schooling to become specialists. A pharmacist completes a minimum of 5 years of university to be eligible for the national licensing exam, then moving on to further specialties. These professionals are regulated by a strict ethical code and continuing education framework, and must practice within legal boundaries.

STEVESTON PHYSIOTHERAPY: Home Grown Physio Takes the Helm Story by Sarah Gordon

Photos by Sandra Steier

It is Steveston’s good fortune that physiotherapist Todd Jury recently took ownership of Steveston Village Orthopaedic and Sports Therapy Clinic, which is rebranding as Steveston Physiotherapy. Todd grew up in Steveston where he attended both elementary and high school and he remains actively involved in the community.

kinesiology experience, Todd went on to complete his master’s degree in physical therapy at UBC in 2017.

Todd graduated from UBC with a bachelor’s degree in kinesiology in 2015. He enjoyed the program’s hands-on approach and came to more fully appreciate the importance of physical activity in promoting and maintaining good health. Inspired and motivated by his

His father, Don Jury, is a retired physio who opened West Coast Sports Physiotherapy Clinic in 1984; it was one of Richmond’s first physiotherapy clinics. His mother, Vicki Jury, was a P.E. teacher at Killarney Secondary School. Todd mentions that his parents were his mentors; he learned from them and Greg Cassap, the clinic’s former owner.

26

Physiotherapy has always been a part of Todd’s life. Growing up, he experienced sports injuries and says, “I was either getting treatments or seeing my dad work in the business.”

Todd worked at Steveston Village Orthopaedic and Sports Therapy Clinic for several years, and when opportunity knocked he was excited to purchase the practice. StevestonInsider.com

Many Stevestonites know Greg Cassap. He opened Steveston Village Orthopaedic and Sports Therapy Clinic in 1990, and over the last 31 years earned an excellent reputation as a physiotherapist. One year ago Greg mentioned that he was preparing for retirement and would be selling the business. Todd says, “We slowly talked it through over nine months, and here I am today, a Steveston business owner.” Greg has tapered back his hours but he is still working with the clinic during the transition. Todd comments, “He has a huge following as a physio. He cares about people and the community. Patients talk very highly about him and I hope I will also bring this as an owner.” Todd has plans in store to update the website, create a new logo and do a “refresh” of the business. In addition, small renovations will take place including new paint, taking out the carpets, and adding new cabinets.

When talking to Todd it is hard not to feel energized. He projects positivity and it is clear he is an inclusive and humble leader who fully credits all of his colleagues for making Steveston Physiotherapy a success.

“It is not a flashy or large clinic. It is the physios and staff that make the clinic what it is and bring people back.” “Receptionist Dinty Evidente does an excellent job—she is the front office star.” Todd adds, “She is always friendly and smiling. She knows the patients well. I am happy to have her,” he says. The “back office star” is office manager Gita Burns. She has also worked at the clinic for a number of years. Todd says, “She does a great job. She does work that nobody sees.” Todd is grateful physiotherapist Meenie Grewal joined Steveston Physio in May 2021. She earned a bachelor’s degree in physical therapy in India as well as a master’s degree in science physiotherapy (neurology) in England. Physio Jane Schmidt recently retired. Todd says, “She was a valued colleague. She worked at the clinic for eight years and was well-loved by people.”

Steveston Physiotherapy is strongly supported by the community. Many patients live close enough to walk to their appointments.

“A healthy and active community drives people to physiotherapy.” People of all ages receive treatments. Todd has seen patients as young as five years old and up. No referral is needed. They handle ICBC, WorkSafeBC, and MSP claims. The role of a physio is to assess and treat. Common complaints that bring people in include lower back, shoulder, and neck pain. Some pains stem from household chores, others are ergonomic, and some are sports injury-related.

“We listen and work on problems with our patients to help them get better.” Todd mentions, “We work on patients through a lot of different avenues. There is not a one size fits all treatment. We give instructions and answer questions. We teach patients to do exercises at home and it filters through if they want to get better. Daily work is required at home—it can’t all be accomplished by coming to an appointment once or twice a week.” Electrotherapeutic modalities are practiced to help control pain, inflammation and swelling, muscle retraining, and to optimize soft tissue healing. Modalities include laser, ultrasound, TENS, interferential current therapy, and muscle stimulation.

experiencing Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo. Todd says, “Some hands-on vertigo treatments have been proven very effective, having a 98 per cent success rate with three visits. It’s a great feeling knowing we can give a patient instant relief.” The rewards of his practice are plentiful. He likes to chat with people about their lives and the world; it’s a job where he gets to meet and mingle with people, which he really enjoys. Todd remarks, “Living with pain can be a stress on your mental state, and knowing that I can try to make people feel better is fulfilling,” he says. Having grown up here, Todd knows a few local business owners his own age and he hopes to collaborate with them. He says, “Steveston is a very special place in Richmond. While Richmond has changed in many ways, Steveston has managed to preserve its small-town charm. I am excited about my role as a new owner of a Steveston business.”

Both Todd and Meenie are trained in vestibular and concussion rehabilitation. Medication doesn’t always work for patients who experience vertigo, however, physios can be successful in treating it. Doctors will refer patients 28
