I love this creative, keeping it local story. Susan Lefeaux and Mike Jackson planned their wedding with a goal to use as many Steveston suppliers as possible and found almost everything they needed in our little village. We welcome a number of new businesses to the neighbourhood including 4Cats, Best Bites Indian Cuisine, Brew Bike Tours, Cool Gelato, DNA Esthetics, Steveston Optical, and Treasure Time Photography. Meow & Bark Avenue moved a block over and True Conditioning has relocated above Coast Capital Savings. Save-On-Foods is working hard to open this year. It’s wonderful to see the new free Richmond Discovery Shuttle bringing tourists to explore the village on weekends. From picnics at Garry Point to evening walks along the dike trails and patio dining at some of Richmond’s best restaurants, there is no question, Steveston is at its prime in the summertime!

Tucked off Bayview Street, with the Fraser River as its beautiful vista, you will find Kove Kitchen. This hidden gem is as much about what is happening outdoors as what is going on inside — the dining environments are intertwined. It is a spot like no other restaurant in the village situated in a peaceful location slightly east of Fisherman’s Wharf.

The business was formerly Mandalay Lounge & Steakhouse, which they opened in 2009 and then rebranded five years ago as Kove Kitchen.
Choose a table or a couch on the lower patio facing the wooden boardwalk and take in the backdrop of the water and fishing boats (you can also catch sight of swans, seals and eagles), or head to the upper deck where you can enjoy the scenery. While Allan oversees the menu he gives full credit to Jennifer for being the star of the show. He says, “Jenn is an experience engineer.” Her effervescent personality makes customers feel instantly at home. Jennifer runs the business, oversees group bookings, greets customers, serves and works behind the bar when needed, and is responsible for every tasteful decorative touch including the beautifully maintained planters on the patio. The afternoon I dropped by, a wedding was taking place on the upstairs patio. Jennifer was excited for the happy couple who are regular patrons. In fact, loyal customers are the backbone of this business and some come in weekly to dine. Jennifer says, “It is our connection with our customers that keeps us busy

year round. Our staff make people feel welcome and we know many of our clients by name.” Allan adds, “It’s a dynamic experience. We have a strong serving team. People come here to see Jenn and our staff.”

Kove Kitchen is a casual rustic eatery with stellar service and fabulous food.

The well-rounded menu provides many tasty options. Kove’s winning butter chicken is served with naan or jasmine rice. Meat is ground in house daily for burgers that are served on pretzel or brioche buns. The fried chicken entrée
Seafood goes hand in hand with this location. Customers can select from appetizers such as the house made crab cakes topped with fresh salsa and Thai chilli sauce, Kove’s signature creamy seafood chowder with seafood morsels, or spicy tuna sashimi salad. Seafood entrees include the salmon burger, beer battered Pacific Rougheye fish with hand cut fries and tartar sauce, and the West Coast wild salmon with chimichurri sauce and a choice of mashed potatoes or jasmine rice. There are a number of vegetarian entrees on the menu. The delicious plant based Beyond Burger has recently been introduced. Other vegetarian dishes include the Balinese vegan bowl and the spicy black bean burger.

Brunch is served every Saturday and Sunday from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. A few of the selections include the classic breakfast (two eggs, a choice of ham, bacon or sausage, hash browns and toast), Belgian waffles and fried chicken, crab cake benny (two bacon eggs with Kove’s signature crab cakes topped with hollandaise sauce and hash browns), and the breakfast poutine is sure to stir the hearts of patriotic Canadians. Fall menu alert! Many customers eagerly await this time of the year. Jennifer arrived in Canada from her native Ukraine in 1996 and likes to pay homage to her homeland by adding her fall favourites to Kove’s menu. Watch for borscht, cabbage rolls and perogies made from Jennifer’s family recipes. What does Jennifer find most rewarding as a business owner? She says, “It makes my day when I see an empty plate.” She adds with a smile, “We call our customers ‘happy campers.’ They can come and happily camp here for three hours.”

Hog Shack Cook House: Best BBQ North of the Border Story by Sarah Gordon

Known for its mouth watering, finger licking Kansas City-style BBQ, Hog Shack Cook House has stood the test of time (nine years and counting) and continues to grow in popularity.
John says, “We wanted to be as authentic as possible to the Southern experience.”
Allan Yeo (general manager) and John Lim Hing (Hog Shack’s pit master) have been friends since they met in grade 8 at McRoberts Secondary. In 2007 they purchased Corelli’s Mediterranean Grill from the original owners and operated it for a few years.
The BBQ sauces and rubs are made in house and all meats are smoked on premise. Ribs, chicken and big cuts of meat such as brisket are smoked between six to twelve hours. Their signature Kansas City-style sweet tomato molasses BBQ sauce is applied, and then it’s time to dig in!
In 2010 the partners felt it was time to rebrand and introduce something unique to Steveston’s restaurant scene. They set off on a quest to Kansas City, lured to the region known for its cooked to perfection BBQ cuisine.

Hog Shack attracts a variety of meat lovers of all ages. It’s a popular spot for bachelor and bachelorette parties, corporate events, weddings and it is also a terrific place to take in a sporting event.

in offering a drink menu featuring exclusively craft beer. They were the first to do so, and they believe Hog Shack is still one of the only businesses focussing 100% on craft beer. They tap new brews every day or two. The beer panels on the wall change almost daily with six selections on tap, in addition to a range of bottled craft beers. Allan estimates over 400 different beers have come through the restaurant since the business opened. B.C. wines, cocktails and bourbon flights round out the alcohol menu.

Fancy a taste of everything? Some of the dishes that keep customers coming back for more include Johnny’s Jurassic Platter. This two-person meal features St. Louis side ribs, Dino ribs, chicken quarters, pulled pork, and a choice of four side dishes (coleslaw, yam fries, baked beans, rice pilaf, sautéed vegetables, corn bread, hand cut fries or the side of the day). For a larger crowd, Allan’s Mammoth Platter (feeds 4 and a bit) includes all of the above BBQ dishes in addition to smoked sausages and brisket and six side dishes. If smoked beef back ribs are calling your name, try Hog Shack’s popular Legendary Dino Bones. Hog Shack’s catfish and chips puts a

southern twist on Steveston’s more traditional fish and chips; here you will find catfish deep-fried with a cornmeal crust. If you are craving BBQ and a sweet deal on a meal, head to Hog Shack for the $11.95 Express Lunch (Monday to Friday, noon to 4:00 p.m.). The dine-in menu offers burgers, sandwiches, tacos and pastas.
People come from across the Lower Mainland and American friends travel from Blaine and Seattle to dine at Hog Shack.

Flight crews have heard of the restaurant and make a point of venturing from YVR to taste the BBQ goodness. Likewise, Americans who make a port of call in Vancouver while on an Alaskan cruise will travel to Steveston for a taste of home.
John concludes, “Hearing our food is one of a kind in Vancouver and meets U.S.A. standards is feedback we love to hear.”
Hog Shack’s wall displays numerous ribbons John has earned in barbequing competitions. He enjoys competing on the BBQ circuit; he packs up his smokers and award winning rubs and sauces and hits the road for competitions in Las Vegas, Oregon, Alberta and B.C. John and his team proudly took top prize in 2015 at the BBQ Off the Bypass in Langley.

A Steveston Wedding Story by Sarah Gordon

Anyone who has planned a wedding knows how much work goes into reaching the magical “I do” moment. When Susan Lefeaux and Mike Jackson got engaged they knew the Chinese Bunkhouse at Britannia Shipyards was the perfect location for their summer wedding, but Susan credits Mike for driving the idea to use as many other local suppliers as possible for their special day. The couple sees eye to eye on the merits of shopping locally. Susan says, “I love to give a nod to people I recognize on the street and say hello to our neighbourhood’s merchants. I know many of the shop owners by name.”
They found virtually everything they needed for their wedding in Steveston. Sasha at Juvelisto designed their rings. Susan and Mike gathered some of their no longer worn jewellery and brought it in to be repurposed. Susan says, “We went in with an idea but Sasha’s design was so much better!” One of Mike’s goals was to ensure there was no waste associated with the event. They will accomplish this by having no throwaway décor and all of the flowers will be given away afterwards. Pretty Things and All Occasions Chic Décor were the logical choices for stunning floral arrangements as well as décor rentals. Janeil and Jamie arranged everything that was needed from linens and stanchions to flowers and bouquets. 32
When it came to finding the perfect wedding gown Susan was over the moon that she had to look no further than Mia Boutique. She is thrilled with her ivory lace dress, which she plans to pair with blingy sandals. Susan says with a laugh, “Ella must be tired of seeing me!”

Lift Hair Shoppe on No. 2 Road was the obvious choice for the bride and her bridesmaids’ wedding day coifs; Julia is Susan’s regular hair stylist and she wanted to feel comfortable entrusting her with this important job. Raintree Wellness Spa’s excellent reputation attracted Susan to neighbouring business for her bridal party’s makeup and nails. While all eyes are on the bride and groom, the wedding cake is also a highlight of the celebration. Susan and Mike selected Sinfully Too to create both the cake and desserts. Susan says, “Nicole has been such a treat to work with.” They

attention to detail and how she offered samples and had wonderful suggestions for the cake’s style and design. They ended up choosing a lemon and pistachio layer cake with decorative fresh flowers on top. Susan and Mike’s focus on leading healthy lifestyles, so it was a natural fit to use Richmond’s The Healthy Chef for their catering needs. They looked off the Steveston grid for their wine supplier. Intrigue is one of their favourite wineries from Lake Country (Okanagan), B.C., and its “I Do” sparkling wine was perfect for the occasion. Rounding out the list of local suppliers, the couple hired a Richmond based officiant and Steveston Insider’s own photographer Sandra Steier to capture the moments.

Even the accommodation was sourced locally; Susan, Mike and their guests are staying at the newly renovated Steveston Hotel. Kove Kitchen’s excellent views, diverse menu and friendly service made it the perfect choice for the post wedding day brunch. Susan and Mike’s story is a shining example of how shopping locally for something even as specialized as a wedding is entirely possible.
