Publisher’s Note This August issue is a hot one! For over a year now, we have watched with fascination the new Steveston Firehall being constructed. Steveston Insider is excited to feature some of our local firefighters on the cover, offer you an insider’s look at this state of the art facility, and meet Deputy Chief, Jim Wishlove of Richmond Fire-Rescue. Two Steveston businesses are featured, Prickly Pear Garden Centre and a new farm called Urban Edibles. Coach Dave Gillis writes about minor hockey in Richmond, and if you are considering becoming a new hockey parent like myself, this is a good read. August is a sunny and relaxing month with many things to do right here in Steveston. My favourite August event is the Richmond Maritime Festival at Britannia Shipyard. I am fascinated by the water, ships and heritage. The Steveston Dragon Boat Festival is fun to watch and to participate in. Family Farm Fair at London Heritage Farm is where my son rode his first pony, and he still loves to see the baby pigs, chickens and bunnies. We always enjoy

swimming classes at Steveston Outdoor Pool and sports camps at the Richmond Oval. It is hard to think of shopping for back to school in August but it must be done! Steveston is a tourist destination and we love to be extra friendly and welcoming to our visitors. They inspire us to support our fabulous community and shop Steveston first. Steveston is receiving an abundance of media exposure thanks to all of you, and this will continue into the fall as we welcome film crews and plan fall events and spread the love of Steveston. Enjoy the rest of summer!

STEVESTON’S NEW ICONIC GATEWAY by Sarah Gordon

Photos by Sandra Steier

A new landmark greets us as we enter Steveston. Drive by the new No. 2 Steveston Firehall at night, and look at the tower. Its red glass windows are dramatically lit to convey a true fire department look and feel. This facility is an architectural dream. Aesthetically it is beautiful. Structurally this is an environmentally friendly building, which we should feel very proud to have in our community. Firefighting in Steveston has a rich history, which dates back approximately to 1912. During those years, Steveston’s canneries were in high production, and the need for fire protection was paramount. Steveston village experienced a number of major fires in the early 1900s. The great fire of May 14, 1918, was particularly monumental as most of Steveston’s commercial buildings burnt to the ground. Based on historical knowledge, firefighting in Steveston was handled in a number of ways over the years, ranging from paid firefighters,

to volunteer brigades and even calling on the assistance of the Vancouver Fire Department. In 1972, a two-storey firehall was constructed at the location of No. 2 Road and Steveston Highway. In late 2009 the 37-year-old No. 2 Firehall was demolished and has been replaced with the magnificent new seismically upgraded facility, which is scheduled to have its official grand opening on October 1st, however as of late June, it is officially in use. The City of Richmond Facility Management and Planning departments assessed the seismic status of the original firehall, along with the condition of the mechanical and electrical systems. They concluded that the facility needed to be replaced. The new firehall meets current standards, including post-disaster requirements, and addresses gender equity. The location and design of the facility provides a functional building with which to operate the emergency response capability for Steveston and the city, and provides an iconic gateway into Steveston. The design concept included an open plan and the desire to provide a lit beacon into the community. The openness of the building represents the open style of leadership and communication, which Richmond Fire-Rescue (RFR) shares with the City of Richmond and the community. The lit beacon symbolizes Steveston’s past and current nautical ties.

Architect Jay Lin of Hughes Condon Marler Architects, sought to replicate the cannery and industrial ‘feel’ of Steveston’s history. He accomplished this with pine beetle kills wood on the exterior trim, metal cladding on the siding, and the steel girder trim on the building itself. In addition, the galvanized metal railings, stairs and ivy trelliswork reflect the design concept. Steveston Firehall houses Engine Company No. 2, a fire engine that has a crew of four firefighters on duty at all times. Engine Company No. 2 is one of the busiest emergency response units RFR has in the city. The average number of emergency responses that Engine Co. 2 responds to is 1700 per year. A number of those calls are for service in other areas within the city as well as Steveston proper. Richmond is protected 24/7, 365 days per year by RFR providing four Engine Companies, three Ladder companies, two Rescue companies and one Battalion Chief on duty prepared to respond to calls for service. Some of the more prevalent emergencies Engine Co. 2 responds to include alarms ringing, motor vehicle incidents, medical calls, fire, hazardous materials incidents, rescue, miscellaneous calls for assistance, and recently, they rescued a number of baby ducklings from the drain in front of Westwind Elementary!

Steveston Insider Magazine •

The new facility provides 8300 square feet of usable space for RFR staff. The project has come in on time and under budget. The architect's abstract expression of metal cladding, wood and steel were incorporated into the requirements of RFR to have drive through apparatus bays capable of accommodating large fire apparatus vehicles, and to provide for longer aerial fire apparatus in future years. Extensive traffic analysis was undertaken to achieve the optimal apparatus bay location and orientation on site. The site and facility also needed to accommodate twice-daily vehicle and equipment checks by the response crews. Steveston Firehall is home to the hose repair technicians for RFR, as well as the Pre-Incident Planning Team. Engine Co. 2 provides home fire safety inspections, is responsible for conducting fire prevention inspections in the Steveston area, and assists with the infant car seat installation and inspection program located at No. 1 Firehall, Brighouse. Crews conduct training sessions daily and in the evenings, which includes hose and ladder drills, equipment maintenance and familiarization, rescue and entry drills, medical first aid, safety inspections training, interpersonal skills, leadership and Worksafe and other legislative training requirements.

Aug - Sep 2011 • www.StevestonInsider.com

7

The training and hose tower is located on the northeast corner of the property, to allow for privacy and noise reduction for neighbours when training and operating are taking place onsite. Quick access to the fire truck for the crew when training and working in the facility was the prime consideration in designing the interior layout. The facility has been designed with a multi-purpose training/lecture room with a public vestibule that allows public groups the opportunity to use the room for public meetings and sessions when the room is not in use by RFR staff. The new firehall proudly meets LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Gold requirements. LEED certification is the internationally recognized standard for

measuring building sustainability. Achieving LEED certification is the best way to demonstrate that a building project is truly "green." The firehall has achieved this by minimizing the amount of land used by the building, roadways and hard surface training areas. There is an extensive green roof system, over 60% of the building roof top areas will be green roof. Green wall (for landscaping), extensive tree and shrub planting, drought resistant plant selections, onsite storm water management with rain gardens, day lighting, efficient electrical and water appliances and fixtures, natural ventilation, ground source (Geo-Thermal) heat and cooling system all help make this a truly sustainable building. Public art will find a home at the No. 2 Firehall. Through the City’s Public Art program, the inclusion of a public art piece will bring together the community of Steveston, the history of the firehall in the area, and will tie in the fishing and farming history of Richmond.

Welcome back to the neighbourhood, Steveston Firehall!

SCHOOL DAYS by Sarah Gordon I fondly remember my elementary school days. I attended three schools, in three very different locations. I started my schooling in Pittsburgh as a kindergarten student. Three things left a lasting impression on me: finger painting, the impressive quintessential two-storey brick school building with staircases that seemed to climb forever, and the song that we would sing each day “Red, white and blue, my flag I love you.” When I was in grade one we moved to a small town in Ontario where we spent four of the best years of my life. I loved everything about school. I enjoyed working hard. I could not wait to bring my report cards home, and I adored my grade two teacher, Mrs. Pickering, who has become a legend in my family. I hope that most people have a Mrs. Pickering at some point in their school years. These teachers make you go the extra mile, simply because they inspire you. That year my reading took off, and I pushed myself to read challenging books and do whatever I could to see Mrs. Pickering’s beautiful smile. I remember the dog days of summer when Mum would take my brother and me shopping for new school clothes, and even more exciting, school supplies. I remember the first day of school when the newly waxed floors would gleam after two months of being childfree. My heart would skip a beat to see new stacks of books, which I could not wait to crack open. The last day of school was always bittersweet, with the anticipation of summer adventures beckoning, combined with the sorrow of saying goodbye to school and friends. As much as we eagerly awaited the bell to ring one last time, and would run to the door singing “No more 10

Steveston Insider Magazine •

papers, no more books, no more teachers’ dirty looks” I was insincere in my delivery. I knew how much I would miss the monkey bars, skipping, colouring and drawing with my friend Cathie by my side. During grade four, some earth shattering news came my way, we would be moving to Vancouver at the end of the school year. Not only were we shifting from a small town to a big city that I had never set eyes on, but I was also leaving behind a place I loved. Optimistically, like the childhood friends in the Bette Midler movie Beaches, my friends and I exchanged mailing addresses and promised we would always be friends. Amazingly, we have kept our promise. I proceeded on from my somewhat strict Protestant school to a very relaxed Vancouver elementary school. I assumed that the difference had to do with small town and big city schooling, and as a child of the 1970s, I simply had to “go with the flow”. Within two months, my brother and I were immersed in our new surroundings. We learnt how to take two city buses to get to our school on the other side of town, how to cross extremely busy West Broadway without traffic lights, and how to work semi-independently in an alternative education classroom. Emotions well up in me each September, and again in June, as my daughters go through their own cycles of firsts and lasts. As the first day of school approaches, it is symbolically a new year for many of us. Enjoy the adventures ahead, and Mrs. Pickering, if you are out there; know that you made a lifetime impression on me. □ Aug - Sep 2011 • www.StevestonInsider.com

PRICKLY PEAR by Sarah gordon

Prickly Pear Garden Centre is a Steveston success story. Businesses have come and gone in the last sixteen years while Prickly Pear has established itself as a Steveston fixture. Owners Brian Gilmore and Patti Maskall, founded their business in 1995. They have seen many changes in the village over the years, and indeed throughout their lives in Steveston. They attribute the development of the former B.C. Packers site for residential use as being an important turning point for Steveston. Another major change has been the increase in retail stores. Their story is as local as it gets; both Gilmore and Maskall were born and raised in Steveston and still live in the area. Both are descendents of pioneer families. James Gilmore Elementary is named after Brian Gilmore’s great grandfather’s brother. He is also related to Hugh Boyd, of Hugh Boyd Secondary fame. Patti Maskall’s family owned a dry cleaning business in Steveston. Her grandfather was a volunteer firefighter and a carpenter. Her mother’s side of the family raised racehorses and cattle, and had a farm in east Richmond. Gilmore and Maskall met in 1989. Gilmore worked at an Art Knapps store located at The Bay in Richmond, which is where he met Maskall who worked at The Bay’s lawn and barbeque department. When Art Knapps pulled out of The Bay, the industrious gardening duo submitted a proposal to run a gardening centre. After four years of running their seasonal business, they began the search for a permanent year round space. The Prickly Pear Garden Centre in Steveston opened in 1995. The Prickly Pear building dates back to 1910 and has housed a diverse range of businesses including Steveston Upholstery (1988-1993), 14

Steveston Insider Magazine •

Steveston Bottle (1983-1987), West Coast Diving (1978-1981), an oil stove manufacturer (1973-1975), and a cabinetmaker (1971-1973). Longtime Stevestonites may remember Eight Ball Pool Hall (1956 to 1970), and for many years, the location was a battery shop for fishing boats. Have you ever wondered about the lovely park next to Prickly Pear? Gilmore and Maskall built this green space and maintain it as part of their lease. They fill the store with quality plants and offer a wide variety of home décor and giftware. The year round garden centre offers exquisite hanging baskets and bedding plants in the spring and summer, pumpkins in the fall, and Christmas trees and greenery for trimming your home for the winter season. In addition, they have an excellent assortment of outdoor containers, planted and ready to brighten up your deck or doorway, or empty and awaiting your inspiration. A little known fact, if you bring in your own pots, Prickly Pear’s staff will assist you with planting them. The hard working business partners put in long hours between April through July, and cut back ever so slightly the rest of the year. In addition, Gilmore attends a local plant and cut flower auction in Burnaby twice a week and visits local greenhouses and growers. Prickly Pear Garden Centre is an oasis in Steveston village. Whether you are looking to beautify your garden or find something special for the inside of your home, walk through the welcoming red door and enjoy the Prickly Pear experience. 12311 No. 1 Road 604-241-4717 www.pricklypear.ca Aug - Sep 2011 • www.StevestonInsider.com

COACH DAVE ON MINOR HOCKEY As we roll through the summer, my son and I are anticipating the upcoming hockey season. With fond memories of the Canucks almost winning the Stanley Cup, it is difficult not to have “what if” moments when I see my son out on the ice. It is a nice dream many hockey parents share, as long as it is just a dream. My son plays hockey and I am a hockey coach. I do my best to coach and teach, and strive to provide a good hockey experience for all the players. Playing hockey has not only been an amazing experience for my son, but also for me. He has had great coaches and made some good friends. With over 25 years coaching experience in other sports, I have found coaching hockey to be different. I appreciate the support from the hockey community which accepts, encourages and believes that each person has something special to offer the organization. Richmond is fortunate to have two very strong, and very well-run hockey associations to choose from, Richmond Minor Hockey and Seafair Minor Hockey. Dedicated volunteers who have the best interests of our children in mind run both associations. They offer the opportunity to play, learn and develop in a fun, safe and sportsmanlike environment. I am often asked “Richmond or Seafair? Which hockey association is better and why?” Since they are both good, the question comes down to which one is the best fit for your child and your family.

Both associations ask their players to agree to these basic principles: •Play by the rules of hockey and in the spirit of the game. Show respect for on-ice officials, and abide by their decisions. •Control your temper. Fighting and “mouthing off” can be detrimental to the team and spoil the activity for everyone. •Respect opponents and do not intentionally hurt or try to hurt any other player. •Be a true team player. Respect team members and do not intentionally do things that can spoil the fun of the game for them. •Remember that winning isn’t everything – that having fun, improving skills, making friends and doing your best are also important. •Acknowledge all good plays and performances – those of your team and your opponents. •Remember that coaches are there to help you. Accept their decisions and show them respect. Parents should observe these principles of fair play: •Do not force your child to participate in hockey. •Your child plays hockey for his or her enjoyment, not yours. •Encourage your child to play by the rules and to resolve conflict without resorting to hostility or violence.

Here are some tips: •Go online and review both websites and registration packages. •Attend the “Try Hockey” events that each association sets up for interested players. •Ask your friends how they made their decision. They will tell you their personal reasons sometimes it is money, particular coaches, schedules, who you know, perhaps just because friends are on the same team or it might be as simple as orange versus blue! 32

•Teach your child that doing one’s best is as important as winning so that your child will never feel defeated by the outcome of the game. •Make your child feel like a winner every time by offering praise for competing fairly and hard. •Never ridicule or yell at your child for making a mistake or losing a game. •Remember that children learn by example. You should applaud good plays and performances by both your child’s team and their opponents. •Never question the official’s judgment or honesty in public. •Support all efforts to remove verbal and physical abuse from children’s hockey games. •Show respect and appreciation for the volunteers who give their time to hockey on behalf of your child. Determine if your schedule allows you to get them to the practices on time. Hockey season is September – March and the schedule is not finalized until early October. Depending on age, expect a minimum commitment of twice per week. There is preparation in ensuring your child’s equipment is clean, maintained and ready for each practice. Can you afford it? Hockey requires a commitment to the team, ice time, and equipment before stepping on the ice. (There is help available for families that require assistance so that no children are excluded.) Here is a guideline of costs: Registration (depending on age and ice time): $260 - $780; Extra skills programs (depending on number of sessions and instructor): $80 - $800; Skates: $40 (used) - $400. Average new skate is $180; Shin Pads $30; Hockey Pants $34; Hockey Gloves $69; Practice Jersey (game jerseys will be provided) $20; CSA approved neck guard $16; Shoulder Pads/Chest Protector $50; Elbow Pads $30; Protective Cup (jock strap) built into shorts with Velcro to hold up socks $22; Hockey Steveston Insider Magazine •

Socks $12; Leggings and undershirt $60; Water Bottle $5; CSA Approved Helmets with full face mask and chin guard (no bicycle helmets) $89; Hockey Stick (not plastic) $20; Equipment Bag $40 - $150. Goalies require additional equipment. For children who are starting out, you can buy equipment packages from Canadian Tire. Cyclone Taylor Sports, Ice Level Sports and Sportchek sell all the equipment and can also provide assistance in size and fit. Some stores offer programs for trading in skates each year. There are also many places to buy used equipment. Children register based on their age and only move up if they are exceeding their level: Hockey 1 Hockey 2 Hockey 3 Hockey 4 Atom Pee Wee Bantam Midget Juvenile

born 2006/2007 born 2005 born 2004 born 2003 born 2001/2002 born 1999/2000 born 1997/1998 born 1994-1996 born 1991-1993

What is Rep hockey? Higher-skilled players will typically play on a ‘representative’ (a “rep” or “travel”) team that will travel to play rep teams from other areas. Now that you have made the big decision, take a moment and imagine many years from now, when the Cup is being raised. While you are daydreaming about this magic moment, remember your little one still needs help lacing up those skates! www.richmondminorhockey.com www.seafairhockey.com Dave Gillis is the co-ordinator of Sport and Instructional Programming for the University of BC in the Department of Athletics and Recreation and a coach of Soccer, Softball, Football, and Hockey in both Richmond and Vancouver. For over 25 years Dave has been working with adults, youth and children in health, fitness and sports as both a professionally certified coach and master level trainer with IDEA, the International Association of Health and Fitness.

URBAN EDIBLES by Sarah Gordon

A new vegetable and herb farm has appeared on Steveston Highway, which may change the way you shop for veggies. Urban Edibles owner and farmer Allan Surette handpicks fresh from the soil, organic vegetables for you to take home. Some of the vegetables that you will find at Urban Edibles farm include snow peas, swiss chard, mesclun greens, kohlrabi, edamame soy beans, Jerusalem artichoke, carrots, squash, beets, spinach, and even quinoa, the grain-like crop which Surette has discovered grows as well in Richmond as it does in its native South America. Urban Edibles farm is located on the site of a former dairy farm, which operated thirty years ago, and the land has sat vacant ever since. Surette had been searching Richmond for an appropriate parcel of land to lease, and came across this prime location, which provides him with a short commute, and a convenient location for his customers. The labour to prepare the soil for planting was intensive. He brought in an excavator to clean off the vegetation and soil from the concrete slabs where the barns previously stood. Surette was then able to see the lay of the land, and determine how useful the slabs would be as bases for greenhouses and a sales shed. Most days you can see Surette hard at work when you drive past his farm, where he is digging, weeding, planting, tending his crops, or picking and selling produce. He is a one-man show, although he does receive assistance and support from his wife Monica and their two children. Surette did not start out as a farmer, in fact, he worked as a customer support supervisor for eBay for seven years, but after a major 34

restructuring of the company, he decided it was time to explore a new career path. Drawing upon the saying ‘’do something you love’’, he looked towards one of his favourite interests, gardening. Some of Surette’s family lives and farms in Saskatchewan and they joke that while so many are trying to get out of farming; he has just entered the world. Surette had prior experience working at a retail garden shop; therefore, he was not entering the great unknown. The idea of progressing to farming came in stages. An unexpected spark ignited inside Surette at a garage sale, where he admired some thriving planter boxes. Realizing he could do the same thing at home, Surette removed a massive hedge from his property and replaced it with planter boxes. He was hooked on growing his own veggies. Before long, Urban Edibles was born. In addition to farming, Urban Edibles offers garden consulting services, including building and installation of raised planters, throughout the Lower Mainland. With Surette’s help, it is easy to get started growing your own organic vegetables at home. The benefits of growing your own vegetables are numerous, from improving your health by eating the freshest, pesticide-free produce, to helping stretch your food budget by producing your own crops. Urban Edibles has new offerings throughout the harvest season. Check the website for updates to see which veggies are ready, or better yet, walk the farm with Surette who will give you his personal recommendations. by Sarah Gordon Richmond Fire-Rescue (RFR) has a wonderful asset on its hands. Jim Wishlove was promoted to the position of Deputy Chief in September 2009. His enthusiasm for his job is highly apparent. He has extremely kind words to say about his co-workers and thoroughly enjoys his work with RFR, and in turn, it is evident that RFR staff enjoys working with the Deputy Chief. Born in Kitimat, Wishlove grew up in Sechelt on the Sunshine Coast. He joined the Seaforth Highlanders Reserve Infantry Regiment as a cadet serving six years, earned his parachute wings in 1987, and then moved up to serve the Battalion for three years as a training officer to one of the cadet corps. He has been a member of the Regimental Association since 1991. Wishlove’s firefighting career began at the age of nineteen when he was a member of the Sechelt Volunteer Fire Department, where he volunteered for one year, and then in the spring of 1990 he was hired by Richmond FireRescue. During his time with RFR, Wishlove worked as a firefighter for sixteen years with various Richmond firehalls, including 7 ½ years at the old Steveston Firehall. He also worked as a dispatcher, a training officer and a company officer. Three Deputy Chiefs work for Richmond FireRescue. Wishlove’s portfolio includes being responsible for the Training Division staff who report to him. He is also responsible for all staff training and development, emergency dispatch and radio communications (E-COMM), long range strategic planning for the department, sustainability and technology. In addition, he oversees major projects and facilities. Wishlove has been actively involved with the rebuild of Steveston Firehall since he assumed his role as Deputy Chief. He graciously gives full credit to all who worked alongside him on this project, including the steering committee, RFR staff, the 36

City of Richmond Facilities Management and Hughes Condon Marler Architects. When he is not working, Wishlove enjoys music, downhill skiing, backpacking and mountaineering. He has reached the peaks of several local and distant mountains. In May 2004, Wishlove and four fellow Richmond firefighters travelled to Alaska and climbed Mt. McKinley, the tallest peak in North America, and raised over $172,000.00 for the Make-AWish Foundation of B.C. and Yukon. Five years ago, Wishlove learned to play the bagpipes, and now is a piper with the Delta Police Pipe Band. He has played at concerts locally, in the United States and throughout Europe. Wishlove is proud to call Steveston home. He has lived here for five years and chose the area for its waterfront location, the views, and outdoor recreation including long runs along the dyke. He appreciates being close to Steveston village where he can find everything he needs from shopping to services. He enjoys relaxing and barbecuing on his patio, and trips to the Farmers Market and Fisherman’s Wharf. Although Wishlove misses firefighting and the hands on difference firefighters make in people’s lives, having met him, it is apparent that he is still making a difference in the lives of his co-workers and indeed all Richmond residents, through his dedicated work with Richmond Fire-Rescue. I had the good fortune to tour the new Steveston Firehall with Jim Wishlove. I was highly impressed with Jim Wishlove’s approachable manner, his extremely inclusive approach to management and his willingness to take time out of his busy schedule to accommodate Steveston Insider. Thank you Jim Wishlove, Richmond-Fire Rescue and the City of Richmond for allowing us this opportunity to showcase the new Steveston Firehall. Aug - Sep 2011 • www.StevestonInsider.com
