April & May 2011

Publisher’s Note Welcome to the spring issue! April showers bring May flowers! After such a wet winter, let’s hope for some sunny days for all the soccer and baseball parents entering spring sports season. April and May brings us Easter, Doors Open, Earth Day, Mother’s Day, Seafood & Wine Festival, Victoria Day long weekend and the opening of Steveston’s Farmers & Artisans Summer Market. It will be nice to see happy kids playing in Steveston playground and waterpark, and the start of the outdoor pool season. It is also the season for birthday parties, preparing for year-end recitals and June graduations. This is when Steveston really comes to life. The shops have new products, the outdoor patios are busy, boats fill the docks, and people are taking off their jackets and walking their dogs with a smile and friendly hello. Bring on spring!

Cover Story: Four Generations Text by Sarah Gordon Photos by Sandra Steier

Special occasions and holidays have always been a cause for celebration for Candice Goegan, owner of Goegan Spa, and her family. Mother’s Day is no exception. The red carpet is rolled out, and all of the mothers in her family are treated like queens on this special day. Goegan’s seven-year-old daughter treats her to breakfast in bed, kid style, with a peanut butter and jelly sandwich made with plenty of love. Goegan fondly remembers treating her mother to similar breakfasts when she was a little girl and enjoys seeing this tradition come full circle. Mother’s Day dinner is equally important for the Goegan family. Four generations gather for a special dinner where they celebrate all of the mothers in their family by contributing recipes and preparing favourite dishes. Although Mother’s Day is generally a happy day, it can also be difficult for those who have lost their mothers. Goegan’s maternal grandmother died on Mother’s Day when Goegan was young. As time goes by, Goegan’s family has tried to think of her passing away on this symbolic day as a special message to remind them that their grandma will always be with them. In fact, she instilled the importance of celebrations and traditions, which has passed down through the generations. The ceremony of holidays has become so ingrained that Goegan’s little girl expects special decorations for Mother’s Day. Goegan is extremely grateful for her mother. While we spoke, Goegan picked up the telephone to ask her a few questions. The love between them was very clear, and it confirmed what Goegan had already expressed, that her mother is the most important person in her life. Recently while her mother was away, Goegan realized just how large a role her mother plays in her life whether it is offering advice, fashion tips, imparting business sense, or simply being a sounding board. As Goegan’s mother aptly states, mothers are the core of the family. Goegan confessed that she could not imagine life without her mother in her corner. It does not matter if you are 7 years old, or 97 years old, the magic of the maternal bond is a powerful one, and young or old, we all need our mothers. There are many ways to celebrate your mother including making her breakfast in bed, taking her out to dinner, buying her flowers, or doing all of the housework and giving her the day off. If you are looking for a special gift of pampering, a trip to the spa is a luxurious gift idea, as many mums do not take enough time for themselves. Goegan Spa offers a Mother’s Day special and gift certificates. Goegan Spa is located in the London Landing neighbourhood of Steveston village. www.goeganspa.com 135-6231 London Road 604-241-4556 .

Turning the Pages by Sarah Gordon

I have adored books for as long as I can remember. On Christmas mornings, my mum and dad cleverly left a new book at the foot of our beds to prevent me and my brother from sneaking downstairs at dawn to peek at the tree. I will never forget waking up to Enid Blyton’s Five Have a Wonderful Time. The perfumed scent of the pages remains fresh in my mind. Although the smell is no longer there, I relive that moment whenever I crack that treasured book open. I suppose it was inevitable that my brother and I would have a deep appreciation for books as mum and dad role modeled their love of reading. I have memories of dad taking us to bookstores where he would happily browse and lose track of time. To this day, his overflowing bookcases attest to many years of reading. What most impresses me is his ability to switch paths from medical texts, to theology, and then pull a surprise manoeuvre and branch into the classics. Mum had a weekly ritual of heading off to the library every Saturday morning and would eagerly return with two huge bags of books. She would effortlessly juggle multiple books and a week later, having read them all, she would start anew. Mysteries, cookbooks, spy and travel books, she loved them all and always had vivid accounts of what she was reading. Not only was she was a voracious reader, she effortlessly found time to prepare gourmet meals and work full-time as a nurse. Three years ago, I realized that I was not setting aside enough time to read. I decided that joining a book club would be the solution. I ended up feeling temporarily dejected when a librarian told me that I would have to form my own club. A friend and I decided to start one, and although a two-person club was cozy, before long we discovered two more friends were interested in joining. It was, to quote Humphrey Bogart in Casablanca, the beginning of a beautiful friendship. Our book club shares a common bond. We are all mothers and we are often strapped for time. We are also very flexible and forgiving of each other’s busy lives. Our tastes are similar, and this amuses us, as there is little controversy over books that we read. We largely feel moved by the same characters, and are equally amused and saddened by the same things. Most importantly, we have become a cemented group of friends. On a recent airplane flight, the passenger beside me noticed the book on my lap. This led to a discussion about book clubs. It instantly gave us common ground. She told me that her book club formed 12 years ago when her children were young. It made me think about my wonderful book club friends, who are taking time to slow down their lives, if ever so slightly, by setting aside time to read and socialize. To all mothers who tend to put everyone’s needs ahead of their own, I hope that you make time regularly do something special for yourself. Happy Mother’s Day.

BLISS

An Interview with Tara Ennevor

What is Bliss? Bliss is a boutique jewellery and gift store located in one of the newest, storefront buildings in Steveston. We carry the full Pandora jewellery line, the popular Ice-Watch line as well as a few unique locally made products. Pandora jewellery is an internationally recognized line of jewellery which is always expanding its range of goods. Why did you decide to open a retail business? Mark took the kids to buy me a charm for my Pandora bracelet for Mother’s Day last year and was amazed at the popularity of Pandora. The following Monday he contacted Pandora Canada and the fun began… What is your role in the store? I will be managing the day to day operations of the store, working on the floor with our staff, especially during busy times and when we have our Pandora gift with purchase events. Mark will remain behind the scenes but he will be around to help out when necessary. Who is your family? Mark and I have a 7 year old son and a 5 year old daughter. They love bike rides along the water and around Garry Point and they have spent hundreds of hours at the Steveston Community Center and park. Do you live in Steveston? Yes we live in Steveston and we love it. When I was pregnant with our first child we lived at Steveston Station. The condo was not big enough for three of us so we started looking for a house around Richmond. We soon realized how much we loved Steveston and we were lucky to find a house in the area. What is your connection to Steveston? Mark and I both have connections to Steveston. My parents Jack and Jane O’Hare own O’Hare’s Pub and Liquor Store and I had until recently been involved in their business from the day the doors opened almost 24 years ago. Mark is the co-owner of Global Marine Equipment and he deals with many of the marine businesses in Steveston. What did you do before you started this business? Mark has been a business owner for many years. He has a marine equipment company and he also specializes in computer hardware. I was a financial advisor for many years and decided to switch to an accounting career after having our first child. I mainly work from home which has given me the flexibility to be very involved in my children’s activities. We will both continue with our regular jobs. What is your favorite thing about Steveston? There is so much about Steveston it’s really hard to pick. We love the water and being so close to it, walking on the wharf with the children on the weekends to see all the fresh seafood, dining at the local restaurants, but most of all we love the close community feeling and our many friends that live close by. An Apple A Day by Dave Gillis

An apple a day, helps us all play. As a parent and coach, I do a great job making sure my children have the right equipment and coaching when they play sports, but I struggle with choosing healthy snacks for them. The right foods and drinks not only help them be better athletes, but are important in their growth and development. All children need to eat a variety of healthy foods, and young athletes are no different. Foods should include protein (found in meat, eggs, and dairy foods), carbohydrates (fruits, vegetables, and whole grains), vitamins (as found in fruits and vegetables), and minerals like calcium (found in dairy products). Some fat is needed too, but that's not usually difficult to get, as it is found in meats, cheeses, nuts, oils, and butter, just to name a few. School-age children generally need between 1,600 and 2,500 calories a day. A child who is more active might need to eat more. But each child is different. It's important to consider how much time they spend being active and participating in sports. Participating a soccer practice can be an intense or light workout, depending on a variety of factors. Usually, children are fine just eating a balanced diet of healthy meals and snacks. If you're concerned about their weight or diet, you might want to talk with your doctor or a dietician who specializes in helping young athletes. The challenge for us as a family is due to busy schedules, filled with school, work, practice, games and activities, many of our meals or snacks happen on the road travelling from one venue to the next. The advice I give to all parents is to plan ahead, know what is on the schedule for that day. Does your child have back-to-back practices? What time will it be when the practice, game or activity start and end? What do I need as a parent to make sure my child is well-fuelled, happy and healthy? My rule of thumb; snack before, snack after and drink plenty of water. If you are like us and find you’re eating at the fields, the arenas or in the car, prepare the snacks so they are portable, easy and safe to eat, and filled with the nutrients needed to replace what was just lost. Half a sandwich, fresh or dried fruit, or a small handful of nuts are all good snacks. Sports bars, granola bars or energy bars are convenient but should not be considered a healthy snack. Water should always be the first choice over sports drinks and juice. Parents should help their children want to eat and drink the right stuff to help them feel and play their best. Now, go out there and have a great season!

Dave Gillis is the co-ordinator of Sport and Instructional Programming for the University of BC in the Department of Athletics and Recreation and a coach of Soccer, Softball, Football, and Hockey in both Richmond and Vancouver. For over 25 years Dave has been working with adults, youth and children in health, fitness and sports as both a professionally certified coach and master level trainer with IDEA, the International Association of Health and Fitness. 18
