“As far as the wedding itself, given we could not legally be married in Australia, we never thought we would have a wedding. I had never quite understood why samesex couples would worr y about travelling overseas to get married as it still wasn’t recognised here, or why we would even spend huge amounts of money on what looked like a wedding here, but still without any legal benefits. We had considered perhaps booking out a restaurant with our family and friends for a big celebration dinner, but that would probably be it. Months passed and eventually one day it was when I was talking to my hairdresser that I said ‘I guess I’m growing my hair in case we have some kind of wedding’, to which he replied, ‘Well why don’t you?’, and that was it. Suddenly we were looking at dates and discovered that there was a Friday with the date of 11:11:11 and that was it! I know that deep down, like most people who find their perfect person, I always wanted to have that oppor tunity to dress up and be the Bride (or one of them!) and enjoy all the things that come with that - like choosing a venue and a photographer, eating cake and dancing the night away with my favourite people. I took on the task of wedding planning wth gusto. All up from our engagement to the actual wedding was 18 months.”

THE WEDDING “We held both our ceremony and reception at Fig Tree Restaurant in Ewingsdale, Nor thern NSW. Che Devlin is the venue manager and head chef - and he is fantastic!

Nothing was too much trouble, including on the day when it was rainy, and all day we watched the weather to see if we would have the ceremony indoors or outdoors as originally planned - at the last minute the sky cleared and he and his team quickly reset the outside area for us. The food was delicious, and the ser vice from his team was impeccable. We stayed on site in the conver ted Dair y House the night before with our bridesmaids, and then again on our wedding night - it was so easy being right there.”
