Amy McCaffrey and Rachael Welsh met on a volunteer university trip to Bali. “There was an instant connection and we gravitated towards each other throughout the whole trip. When we got back to Perth I asked Rachael out on our first date. A year after we met, the opportunity came up to move to Alice Springs for work. We both took it and I popped the question a year later. We moved to the Northern Territory in 2017 and I popped the question on Christmas Eve. We had just finished dinner and were celebrating an early Christmas as we were both working the next day. I went into a long, rambling speech about how much I loved Rachael and wanted to spend my life with her. I had the ring in my pyjama pocket and Rachael had an engagement ring for me too. It was perfectly ‘us’ and afterwards I captured the moment in a painting as a fun way to remember it.”

“We absolutely fell in love with Central Australia, Arrernte Country. Alice Springs is framed by rugged ranges with red dirt and fiery sunsets. We thought we would go back to Perth for our wedding but as time went on and we immersed ourselves in the community, we realised we would love our friends and family back in Perth to visit, see our new home and meet our new friends. We wanted our venue and the natural landscape to shine through and wanted our guests to feel like they had ‘made it to The Outback’. We were married at Ooraminna Station Homestead. Our ceremony was held beside the billabong which was amazing for our guests who were seeing the colours of the outback for the first time. We included DIY theming to add personality to the day. We made many trips to our local tip shop to collect bottles for the tables and a mail box which we repurposed to hold cards at the reception. Our table numbers were a replica of our favourite Vitara complete with a swag on top.” “We wanted to maximise the time spent with our guests so we opted for a ‘first look’ at Simpsons Gap, which is a stunning waterhole a short drive from town. We had many of our photos taken there and were so excited to see each other and have a laugh before heading to the venue. Our amazing photographer was a true professional and we had the best time with her.”

“Our guests were mostly from Perth and we loved taking our vows in front of them. After the ceremony, we headed back to the homestead where we had live music and canapes and a few champagnes. We gave our speeches during this time before heading off with our photographer for some sunset photos. Our reception was held under the stars in a saloon style film set adorned with festoon lighting. I have performed Irish dancing for years and organised with two life-long friends to perform a dance for Rachael. The song was a rendition of ‘Can’t Help Falling in Love’ by The Whistlin’ Donkeys, a band that originates from the same area in Ireland as my family. Both Rachael and I had many family members from England and Ireland who wanted to be at our wedding but couldn’t due to Covid. Having lots of photos and footage for them to see was a big part of choosing that song to dance to. Amy crocheted our cake topper. Rachael’s dad, Ian is an avid gardener and grows stunning jasmine arches in Perth. Amy always wanted to get married in front of a jasmine arch. Getting married in Alice Springs wasn’t going to stop us from having a jasmine arch! The topper featured two brides standing under a jasmine arch and the cake was a two-tier fondant mud cake featuring sweeping jasmine with gold accents. It was stunning and so special to us. We loved the look of wedding jackets but were nervous about including a date on anything, just in case Covid had different plans! Instead we decided to include some lyrics from our wedding song on the jackets.”

“Our advice to other couples planning a wedding is to keep communication open. We found using the app Trello helped us stay on top of things. Don’t be afraid to ask each other for help and be specific with goals and timelines. Stay positive and make time to remind each other that you’re a team. Don’t be afraid to do things your way and challenge tradition. We chose to help save the environment by having online invites and recycling wherever we could. For our honeymoon, we drove from Alice Springs into North Queensland, in our little Vitara of course. We visited Cairns, Whitsundays, Airlie Beach and heaps of places inbetween.”

Kyle Rooney and Trent Constable met through the online dating app, Grindr. “Trent’s profile was blank with limited information. He was extremely shy about meeting but we seemed to click in conversations. The first time we met I could see there was something special about Trent. We couldn’t stop talking and were infatuated by each other. Our proposal was likely the most unromantic proposal in history. We were at a friend’s surprise birthday in the Hunter Valley enjoying wine tours, specifically Leogate winery. We were both mesmerised by the beauty of the place; views, black swans in the lake, the building, everything! We found ourselves talking out loud saying, ‘This is where we should get married’. We looked at each other and both said, ‘Let’s do this’. Each time we visit the Hunter Valley we go back, as Leogate now has a special place in our hearts.”

“With our proposal occurring at a vineyard, there was no question we wanted a similar themed wedding. We opted for the beautiful Pialligo Estate with a rustic theme. The overall day was just so magical, something that neither of us believed would be a reality. Walking down that aisle and professing our eternal love for each other in front of our closest family and friends was by far the biggest highlight of our lives! We were fortunate enough to be able to have our puppy with us on the day, which added to the magic while getting ready and at the ceremony.”

“Our advice for other couples planning their wedding is to do it as a couple and support each other? Nothing prepared us for the mammoth amount of planning that goes into a wedding. We would often bounce ideas back and forth and workshop the day (often resulting in the price going up), taking the pressure off one person. We would recommend engaging a good wedding coordinator or event management company. Being able to have someone take your ideas and create the magic behind the scenes is a godsend and worth every cent. Think about your styles early, as this will allow you time to get a cohesive look and feel for all your décor, especially anything you are wanting to be customised. In Covid times it can take months, so plan for this. Don’t be afraid to ask your wedding party or friends for help. Make a night out of it and you will be surprised how quickly you get through some of those tough decisions. Make your own rules, it’s your special day! Be creative and don’t feel that you need to follow traditions. And, if your ceremony is outdoors, totally catch a helicopter!” “We spent our honeymoon at Hotel Realm in Canberra for a few days either side of the wedding so we could spend some time with travelling relatives and friends. Following this, we jetted off to the Sheraton Grand Mirage Resort in Port Douglas where we enjoyed chartered helicopter tours, a Maserati limousine service, lagoon facing cabanas, couples massages and some boozy games of golf.”

Congratulations DEBRA & KIRBY 1 April 2021, Hobart TAS

Debra and Kirby met in Hobart nine years ago. Deb was in Tasmania for a work event and Kirby had just started with the company. Kirby’s boss tried to set them up. “We saw each other at work conferences and always ended up in the bar at 3am chatting. I decided I wanted Deb to be my ‘future wife’ and started telling everyone. I was working in Melbourne at this stage and Deb was in Brisbane. I made the first move, inviting Deb for a date in a bar under Crown Casino. Deb made the second move, turning up at my house with a herb plant, which was a centrepiece from a charity function. After some long distance dating, I moved to Queensland to be with Deb.” Deb and Kirby describe themselves as romantics who are also competitive. They both wanted to be proposed to so they decided to have a ‘propose off’. Kirby’s criteria was that it be private, with nobody else there. Deb’s criteria: “If my name is not up in lights at Suncorp Stadium, it’s not big enough.” Debra hired a mansion in the Noosa Hinterland with a private ‘Dawson’s Creek style’ jetty. The red carpet was rolled out along with tiki lights and the exact flowers that were used in The Bachelor. She proposed to Kirby with the same type of plant from their second date. A Michelin Star Chef created a menu inspired by their adventures, including Kirby’s favourite Tasmanian food. “Kirby trained a seal... she won! Actually, Sea Life Sunshine Coast Aquarium taught a baby seal how to retrieve a message in a bottle.” The message was delivered to Deb on stage with a message to ‘seal the deal’. She also called in a favour and had the whole Brisbane Lions Women’s team sign a ball for her, thanks to Jessica Wuetschner.

When Brisbane went into Covid lockdown on 29 March 2021, Deb and Kirby were already in Tasmania enjoying a week of festivities. However, over half of their guests were not. People were taken off planes, turned around at stopovers etc. Deb, Kirby and everyone from Brisbane went into quarantine and had to get a negative Covid test result before they could leave the house. However, Tassie couldn’t cope with the demand and getting a test was impossible. A local pathologist in North Hobart came to the rescue but not all guests were so lucky and some were still stuck in quarantine awaiting negative results on the wedding day. The negative test came back 45 minutes before the rehearsal the night before the wedding.

“Our wedding theme was ‘Derby Wedfest 2021’ - Queensland meets Tasmania with a splash of tiki/flamingo. Olivia York created a piece of art of a Queensland Wombat and a Tassie Devil nestled in Australian native flowers. It was used as inspiration for the event. The maroon and navy theme was almost by accident. Deb’s love of Queensland for the maroon and navy matched well but also happens to be the colour of my favourite team, the Geelong Cats. We started our wedding day with rum at MacQ1 with our best friends and having photos taken around Salamanca and the Hobart waterfront. The creative ceremony that our celebrant, Rachael Calvert, put together had everything from comedy to a reading from ‘Oh! The Places We Will Go’, to the handing over of Qld Maroon jerseys to welcome me to the McGrath family. This was extra special as my Dad has had a stroke and is in a wheelchair and it was a huge effort to get him from the Gold Coast to Tassie to be there. There were so many highlights, including everyone’s reactions to the custom made ‘Derby Wedding Edition’ Hartshorn Vodka and the specific bread and butter course (yes a dedicated course to our love of it!). We also had ‘meat raffles’ which contained local Tassie produce. We loved the four separate parts to the day - the meeting in Salamanca, the ceremony and cocktails on the deck at Glen Albyn Estate overlooking the Derwent River, the food and speeches in the main room and the nightclub (Flamingo Megaclub) we created, complete with an ice cream van. The Fun Bus on the way home was great fun, especially watching our guests using the dance poles.”

Love at First Sight It sounds like something out of a fairytale, but when Jess laid eyes on Maddi, it really was love at ﬁrst sight.

“

I knew I wanted to marry Maddi the first minute I opened the door. I know it sounds really cheesy, but literally as soon as I saw Maddi I kinda just got this wave of emotion. It's almost like your life flashing before your eyes, but obviously in the most unexplainable way possible,” Jess confessed. “It really was quite beautiful, and I remember it as if it was yesterday”. It took only a year and half before both knew it was time to pop the question, but being a same-sex couple, there was one hurdle; figuring out who would do so first. “I got hints that Jess was planning something and I said to my mum not long before that I was going to start doing the same. Everyone that I told said ‘Oh no, don't do that, just wait’. Everyone knew, but me, so she beat me,” admitted Maddi.

“I had to get her off the market quickly, you see,” laughed Jess. Originally from the UK, Jess wanted to propose with a ring that Maddi would love, and that captured the beauty of her new home in Australia.

For me, home is where the heart is, and Maddi is my home. I thought of having an Australian opal at the centre of the ring. Obviously all girls like diamonds, so we had to get diamonds everywhere around it too.” - Jess.

Finding the right jeweller was crucial to bringing this vision of the perfect engagement ring to life. “It was quite difficult to find someone or some sort of jeweller that would be able to get exactly what's in my head on a piece of paper and design it,” said Jess. “I went into York Jewellers and met with Bri about designing the ring”. “Her energy was just really calming. It made the whole experience so much easier and less daunting. She was able to help me get what I thought I wanted and put it into a delicate design that would be perfect for Maddi”. The finished product is a sight to behold, and allowed Jess to propose with confidence that Maddi would love her custom made engagement ring. “As soon as I got down on one knee and I showed her the ring, you could see the pure surprise on her face. Perfect. So yeah, it was a very happy day for us. York Jewellers pretty much hit the nail on the head,” said Jess.

Lucie Young and Georgina Herdmun met at Mardi Gras 2008 watching the parade outside stonewall while Lucie was visiting Australia from the UK. “Lucie proposed at Watson’s Bay at Hornby Lighthouse which has to be accessed by a small trail walk along South Head. Lucie put together a video compilation of our life together and proposed overlooking the ocean followed with a bottle of champagne that she had in her backpack.”

“We had so many wedding day highlights. Saying our vows surrounded by family and friends, getting ready at Pier One, venturing around the rocks taking photos and being driven in vintage London cabs to our wedding venue in Watsons Bay. The setting was just beautiful with a perfect sunset, smiling guests and beautiful music by Duke Music. We also managed to FaceTime Lucie’s family who were watching in the UK on the livestream.”

In a Covid environment, the overseas honeymoon had to wait but we ‘road tripped’ New South Wales - Port Stephens, Hunter Valley, Mudgee, Warrumbungles, Dubbo and the Blue Mountains. We are truly lucky to live in such an amazing place.”

Sharon Williams and Rebecca Sellers met through a mutual friend and reconnected when Rebecca moved to Victoria for a new employment position. “Our first overseas trip together was to Hawaii. Bec proposed on a beach walk after dinner with a beautiful ring. After returning home, we found the perfect ring for Bec.”

“We had a tropical island theme. We were both raised by the ocean and live for our days at the beach, so our wedding day had to be ‘feet in sand’. We wanted a very relaxed fun vibe, like a bbq party we would host in our own home. Planning from interstate during tricky times meant we had to trust our event planner and wedding coordinator to understand what we were hoping for and they brought it all to life while keeping our day completely stress free! The weather was amazing and the setting was stunning. A definite highlight was having all of our family and friends together again after being apart for 12 months due to Covid. There wasn’t a dry eye to be seen when Bec made a promise to my late mum (who passed away in 2018) to forever love me and my boys. Absolutely everything went perfectly and turned out even better than we could have imagined or hoped for. We spent a few days after the wedding enjoying Fraser Island with family and friends. We will have to wait until life becomes a little more post Covid normal to have a honeymoon.”

Congratulations Mr & Mrs Birch Suzanne met Steven in 2017 at their local gym. “I was Steven’s personal trainer. We trained together for over six months and Steven did a great job keeping things professional, until one morning I received a personal message just saying ‘good morning’. I thought it was strange as he hadn’t contacted me outside of the gym. Before long, the gym sessions became a little more ‘friendly’ and Steven finally asked to meet me for a coffee. Arriving on his motorbike, we met each other in the car park to walk into the shop together, but as I took one step out of the car, he removed his helmet and planted the biggest kiss on me. I was so surprised as he always seemed so gentle, shy and sweet. He showed me from that day, what it was to have a strong man beside me. We had been dating for six months and I had a new job back in the beauty industry where I had spent most of my career prior to personal training. I was approached by the salon owner to buy the shop from her and without hesitation Steven said, ‘Let’s do it, you will be great!’ Three years later, through several Covid lock-downs, ups and downs, trials and errors, finally we had grown our little beauty salon into Harmony Wellness Spa. A tranquil Day Spa in the heart of Redcliffe, where Steven grew up and I had made a life for myself over the past six years. Earlier in 2021 just before my 45th Birthday, Steven took me for a weekend away to the mountains and proposed. With things on the Covid front seeming to have settled, we decided on a six months plan. Our wedding date 31 July 2021 sounded perfect and after months of planning, it was time to relax and get ready for a week of love and joy. As a busy mother, grandmother and fiance, I know how hard it is to make time for yourself, so planning my bridal shower was a no brainer. I had a full day of pampering at our Day Spa, inviting my mother, future mother- in-law and two friends. We indulged in mineral baths, an infrared sauna, facials, massages and pedicures while enjoying champagne and nibbles in the Spa Lounge before meeting the rest of our guests at Arts & Drafts for an evening of dancing, belly dancing lessons and sip and paint. Two days before our wedding when things were at their most stressful, I booked myself in to the day spa again for a full day of ME TIME. I had an infrared sauna to release the toxins and stress, full body exfoliation for perfectly flawless smooth skin and an indulgent full body hot stone massage then I was wrapped up in a full body mineral mud wrap, with crystal healing facial. After all that, a beautiful shower under the waterfall shower followed by destressing in the mineral bath, just me! I can’t tell you how amazingly relaxing it is, you must try it yourself.” “Just two days later, we were in the mountains for our wedding weekend at Mt Tamborine. We woke so relaxed on the morning of our wedding but by 10am we were scrambling our thoughts as to what plan of action to take after hearing the announcement of the snap three-day Covid lockdown. Our ceremony was planned for 3pm, so of course we were worrying how we could make it all happen. Within 30 minutes of hearing the news, our coordinator Nikki had contacted our celebrant, photographer, musician, caterer, and venue to bring everything forward. We scrambled to get our guests to the venue early, everything set up to perfection as we had planned. We had our beautiful, amazing, perfect wedding at 1pm. The sun was shining with not a cloud in the sky, birds were chirping and guests smiling. Our ceremony was the most important part of the day and Karen made us all feel calm, happy and relaxed. Tim Slape and Simon Lemm met via the virtual world by exchanging a few naughty messages through a specific dating App. Tim made the first move and told Simon he had the sexiest smile. After originally ignoring Tim’s messages, Simon responded a few days later and an instant virtual connection was made. “After several weeks of chatting online, we decided it was time to meet up in person. We met at a coffee shop in Glenelg for a quick coffee which turned into more than five hours of conversation. It was like we were long-lost friends reuniting after a lifetime apart, two lost souls finding their way back home to each other. The connection was instant and the chemistry undeniable. The proposal happened during a dream USA holiday. We were in Vegas (of all places) with some of our friends. Simon proposed in our hotel room after a long day of shopping and finding a ring. I was putting some things back into our suitcases then turned around to see him standing there with the ring. I remember he asked me what did I want this ring to mean and I said ideally a life of happiness together and all our dreams to come true. He then asked me to marry him. My reaction was tears and a giant ‘Yes’! In that moment my whole world became like fireworks, I was exploding with so much happiness and love.”

“Our dream day was ‘go big or go home’. We had a black and white theme. Our guests wore black and white which looked very classy. We continued the theme through the stationery, bonbonnieres and as much of our wedding as possible. There were so many highlights. We both remember standing behind a door that led into the Barrel Room (where our ceremony was to be held) and hearing an almighty buzz of noise. Our processional song was designed to build an atmosphere and our celebrant, Camille helped build it even more. When we walked in with our ‘dog of honour’ Malibu, there was the loudest cheer we had ever experienced. It was so overwhelming. Camille suggested we have ‘Ninja vows’. I wrote a vow for Simon and he wrote a vow for me. We opted to go the less serious option and neither of us knew what we were going to say until we saw the card. We are so in sync with each other that our vows cancelled each other out! There was a hint of Mariah and a lot of Diva promised in them!”

“Viewing our reception room before our guests entered was a massive highlight. The room had everything you could imagine... a fairylight canopy, draping to enclose the room a little, a mirror photo booth, a customer neon sign of our initials, up-lighting and moving headlights, sparkler fireworks and our favourite thing, custom Xyloband LED wrist bands that flashed and changed colour throughout the night. Another highlight was a speech by our dear friends, Sam and Lauren Riley with a surprise video from Willie Garson! He wished us well on our journey through life. It was totally unexpected and Lauren and I are very much ‘Carrie and Stanford’ in real life, so this really melted my heart. The favourite highlight for both of us was watching all our friends and family celebrate love. Seeing two families come together and have so much fun was something we could only dream of. The amount of LOVE we both felt was insane. The ultimate highlights were our entrance and exit to the reception. To have all our guests involved using the Xylobands and a little magic from Middleton Events with the sparklers was a moment in time we both love to relive.”

“Our advice for other couples planning a wedding would be to enjoy your day and not stress about all the little things That’s what our wedding coordinator was there for. Also dream big and achieve your dream day. It’s a day you will look back on for years and think wow, it was a day to remember. Our other tip would be to find suppliers who get your vibe and can add their spin to it! Our one regret was that we didn’t have a videographer. We treated ourselves to a 10 day VIP road trip of Tasmania, which was amazing.”

Jake Schwager and Jackson Myer met while working together at McDonald’s. “Jackson proposed to me. It was on Valentine’s Day 2019. We were sitting at a lookout when he handed me a present. “We were married exactly five years after we started dating. We saw our wedding as more of a casual dinner with our family and friends set in a beautiful and relaxed location, which is why Mavis Kitchen & Cabins was the perfect choice for us. Nicholas Heard and Sonny Royal met through a mutual friend at the Griffith Uni Bar on the Gold Coast. “We were fresh undergraduates in early 2010.” While Nick was working away, he secretly arranged to have engagement rings made. A month later, during a surprise weekend getaway at Binna Burra and following a day of hiking, Nick pulled out the rings and proposed to Sonny on the deck overlooking the hinterland during an unforgettable sunset. “The whole area was unfortunately lost soon after from the Black Summer bushfire season, which is now bittersweet and makes the memory even more special.”

“We have always been deeply inspired by nature and the great outdoors, in particular the Gondwana Rainforests of Australia. This location has long been a place to escape, reset and reconnect. Naturally, we wanted to incorporate this at the heart of our wedding theme by taking our guests on an adventure and truly experiencing the refined beauty that is so close to our hearts. We aimed to capture the forest backdrop to inspire those we care about most in a place that helped define our relationship.” “There were so many highlights. A few friends dropped by to see us both individually on the morning of our wedding to build the excitement while we were getting ready at our family’s mountain view villas. To share this moment with a close group of people was really special and added to the overwhelming amount of love that was in the air. Following the ceremony we headed off with our photographer to capture the beautiful moments that unfolded over the course of the afternoon. Being together wrapped in the bliss of the day was really special giving us time alone before returning to the party to soak it all in and savour the moment. Hearing the speeches from family members and friends was both heartwarming and humbling and of course dancing the night away under a blanket of stars was the icing on the cake. We asked for advice from people who had been married before and the key messages were to stick together as it’s your day, try not to get overwhelmed and take the time to step back and enjoy the day as it will be over before you know it. We had a ‘meet and greet’ the afternoon before the wedding which provided our guests with the opportunity to become acquainted so that nobody was a stranger on the day. Any excuse to extend a full weekend of celebrations!”

Dameian Sullivan and Tarun Naidu met through an online dating app. “We had been chatting for about two months. After a few failed attempts to meet up, we discovered we were heading to the same party in a few weeks’ time. When I walked into the party with friends, I saw Tarun on the other side of the room. We locked eyes but I nervously ran away! A few drinks later, I finally built up the courage to say hello and have a dance, and the rest is history.”

Dameian and Tarun were in a long distance relationship due to Tarun working in Colombo, Sri Lanka and Dameian taking leave to go backpacking for six months in Africa. “We met up in Johannesburg and drove down the garden route to Cape Town. The proposal day began with parasailing off Signal Hill in the morning. The day started to get hotter but Tarun still wanted to hike to the top of Lion’s Head. On the way up, I offered to take the backpack from Tarun, but he was quick to respond that he was fine with it (although I could see he was struggling in the heat). When we finally arrived at the top, I wanted to relax and enjoy the view, but each time I went to sit down, he suggested a different spot with a ‘better view’. Finally he agreed on a spot and wanted me to stand and look at the view so he could take a photo. He seemed to be taking forever so I turned around to see why and saw him standing there holding up a ring and then he popped the question.”

“We had to plan our wedding twice. The first wedding was going to take place on the South Coast of NSW, however with the devastation of the bush fires and Covid, it all fell to pieces. Unsure if it would be even possible to have a wedding in the mists of a global pandemic, less than two months before our planned date we received hope it could still go ahead. We changed the location to Sydney’s Royal Botanic Garden and managed to pull everything together at the most perfect location. The backdrop was the Opera House and Sydney Harbour Bridge. One of my highlights was the surprise Limousine ride Tarun organised for myself and my family.”

“Our advice for other couples planning their wedding is to keep it simple and assign tasks for each other with deadlines. Given we were and still are in the middle of a global pandemic, we were lucky to be able to have a wedding at all, so the honeymoon is on hold until the international borders open. We plan to visit Eastern Europe.”

Alysia paired each Finalist with a Brisbane-based Bridal Gown Designer to create an exquisite gown to inspire them to create their couture wedding cake. The cakes and gowns were displayed in the Haute Couture Wedding Cake Designers’ Marquee and the winner was selected by the public attending the ACADA International Cake Show Australia Show in Brisbane in May 2021.

Joshua came to Sydney from the USA to complete his MFA and six weeks after arriving, they were introduced to each other at an Oxford Street nightclub by a mutual friend. “Within five minutes I knew Joshua was ‘the one’. There’s a very long story involving an Easter ham and Joshua ‘pulling a Cinderella’ on the dance floor, abruptly leaving at 5am to go home and defrost the ham for Easter lunch, without exchanging phone numbers. Thankfully our mutual friend linked us back up the following week. We were engaged in 2005 and had to wait for same sex marriage to become legal in Australia. Then back surgery for Joshua, followed by a COVID cancellation and finally cancer surgery for Adam. It was quite a long journey, but we made it!”

“We worked with a wedding and event stylist who took the planning out of our hands. We conveyed our style and aesthetic and let Jo go to work. The original wedding date was 26 March 2020, but we had to cancel 11 days out due to Covid. We then decided to get married on 26 September 2020, after Adam received an unexpected cancer diagnosis in August 2020. We called Jo and asked her what she could put together in three weeks and she immediately started working on a redesign. Our original guest list of 100 was reduced to 20 and we were married in Sylvania at Adam’s childhood home.”

Joshua wanted to create the right mood with the styling and Adam wanted to ensure the food and drink was plentiful and delicious. Joshua creates quilts as a passionate hobby and wanted them featured at the wedding. His latest quilt became the perfect backdrop. With such minimal planning, the focus was on Adam and Joshua’s love. The decisions about guest lists, seating, music, styling, food, etc. became secondary. The couple have an extensive art collection and a painting by Kerry Darlington provided the colour story for their wedding. A tonal metallic rainbow and touches of gold were scattered throughout the styling. “We had a wedding cake and had everyone cut the cake themselves. The champagne had to be flowing all day and all night, and it certainly was! Along with the wedding cake we handed out Golden Gaytime ice cream bars - because who doesn’t love a gay time at a gay wedding? Instead of flowers, we wore crystal brooches on our lapels. Instead of an arbor, we stood in front of a quilt Joshua had made. Instead of a chandelier, we had a disco ball. Our two children signed the marriage certificate and we live streamed the whole event to family and friends around the world, including Joshua’s quilting friends, affectionately known as ‘the Glitterati’. Our highlight was when the celebrant announced us as Australia’s newest married couple, standing in front of a quilt, in the backyard of Adam’s childhood home, in front of our closest family and friends.” “Our advice is to focus on the love you have for each other, and your own relationship. Do not waste a moment making sure other people are happy with the plans for your wedding. Relish in your day, as the hours will slip away faster than you could even imagine.”

Kaylene McLeod and Jodie Rake met via an online Lesbian social group. “The proposal was on my (Jodie) birthday and with my family’s participation. We went on a trip to Mount Ainslie Lookout in Canberra. Kaylene brought along a customised sign for my son and niece to hold up. She surprised me when I turned around by dropping to one knee and proposing. She had already received the blessing from Jodie’s mum, sister, brother and son. It was followed by a beautiful family dinner.”

“Our wedding theme was very traditional with personal touches of our own. We were very passionate about including our son Bayley and making sure he felt very much a part of it. We gave Bayley a ring during the ceremony. Kaylene is a Traditional Owner from the Wreck Bay Aboriginal Community. Our wedding took place on Kaylene’s Country in Booderee National Park at Iluka Beach. This was a proud moment for us as it was the first gay wedding on Country for Kaylene’s community and also celebrating PRIDE month with our Rainbow family members. We wanted to include family and friends as much as possible. We opted for a classic white and gold theme and did as much as we could ourselves with help from family and dear friends. We decorated the reception and prepared the food ourselves. Our dear friends ‘Kings and Queens’ performed an extraordinary drag show at our reception. We loved how personalised our wedding was. A huge amount of effort and planning went into making sure it was meaningful to us. We absolutely adore our wedding photos taken by our dear friend and having an engagement shoot assisted greatly.”

“Our advice for other couples planning their wedding is to definitely do what you both want to and try to cancel out all the noise. Not everything will go to plan, roll with the day. Stay focused on what is important. Plan, plan and plan and think outside the box. Our honeymoon was on the Gold Coast. It was 12 days of fun, laughter and sprinkles of family visits.”

Proposal Picnic among the Poplars This shoot was a collaboration between many talented vendors, mostly based in the Hunter Valley region of New South Wales. Our models are a real couple and you can see the real love between them. The stylist, Sugar Blossom Events envisioned a dreamy proposal picnic with boho vibes. The colour palette was burnt terracotta, toffee, ivory and sage and the venue was the absolutely beautiful Stonehurst at Cedar Creek. The stunning poplar grove provided a truly picturesque backdrop and Valley Fresh Flowers brought the colour palette to life incorporating large dried palms, mixed textures and gorgeous warm floral tones. The neon sign by Love Glows provided a special touch and Willow and Ink designed the stunning handwritten acrylic ‘Welcome’ sign. Everyone agreed the gorgeous alpacas from Alpaca Kisses - Chai (brown) and Delilah (white) were the highlight.
