Welcome to the issue

Classic beauty is timeless. It’s the kind of beauty that stays beautiful regardless of trends that come and go. To me classic beauty is elegant, soft beauty and dazzling. In this issue, we have pulled together amazing wedding designers from all over the world to share classic looks with you, our valued readers.

Award-winning photographer and Nikon Ambassador, Jerry Ghionis shot the beautiful cover in a historic property with an amazing staircase and natural lighting. Even with a modern twist, classic elements can be present in unexpected ways on the day of your wedding. For example, the stunning gowns from Sareh Nouri. The Castle Hotel by The Luxury Collection is China’s Belgium-inspired, old-world castle nestled on the side of the Lotus Mountains, ideal for a unique destination wedding and honeymoon. In this issue, we also highlight men’s fashion with tuxedos and suits that have a classic look and address buying versus renting for the wedding. Royalty is always classic. On the Cover

This was a portrait taken during a wedding in Melbourne, Australia. The couple had hired this beautiful mansion so that we could use it for their portraits. The mansion is actually a historic property and there are very strict rules about what can and can’t be done while photographing here. One of the rules was that were not allowed to use any flash while indoors. I was drawn to the beautiful large stained glass window and the sweeping staircase in front of it. I asked the bride to walk down the staircase and then posed her in front of the window when the quality of light was just perfect.

This Christian Siriano resort wear playsuit is fitting for a night out in Capris

Christian Siriano The powerhouse brings it yet again with an intriguing North African inspired collection. By Season Hurd

The show was one of duality: dark

and light, soft and rigid, muted and bright. It was dominated by heavily textured, neutral pieces but ended with an unexpected pop of bold colors and flowing silk. Among the neutral, he oscillated between softly draped and rigid silhouettes.

The designs he created had structure, detailing, and texture. Among the most striking were those that mirrored a huge trend in interior design: the Moroccan wedding blanket. Repeating rows of pom-poms, fringe, and glistening trim are the signature look of these keepsakes. The resulting fabric is impossibly

rich - made richer yet by his addition of luxurious feathers and beads. With front row royalty like Alicia Silverstone, Christina Hendricks, and Laura Prepon in attendance, we can only hope that all of these Siriano designs will grace the red carpet soon.

An Exploration of Light Ines Di Santo / FW2016 By Amy Rivers

When it comes to bridal couture, designer Ines Di Santo is known for her exquisitely detailed gowns, expertly fit to accentuate each bride’s shape, personality and style. Every gown receives meticulous attention to construction, guaranteeing flawless execution. But to Di Santo, it’s the little things—the details—that make each gown truly special. Intricate embellishment including the use of French Chantilly lace, ostrich feathers, silk organza and sparkling Swarovski crystals, make Ines Di Santo gowns luxurious, luminescent, and coveted by brides around the globe. The Ines Di Santo brand is a family affair. Launched in 1984, in Toronto, Canada, Ines Di Santo began designing bridal couture when her daughter was nine years old. Having grown up in her mother’s atelier, Veronica Di Santo has inherited her mother’s eye for detail and construction, while adding her own modern twists to classic bridal designs. Over the years, this dynamic design duo has brought their visions to the runway, earning International praise and accolades. Backed by a team of expert seamstresses, Ines Di Santo gowns are a mainstay in luxury bridal boutiques worldwide.

Ines Di Santo’s Fall/Winter 2016 bridal line is an exploration of light. “My Fall 2016 collection was inspired by light and all of its beautiful qualities.” Describing the collection, she says “Sheer layers that allow small glimpses of sparkle to shine thru…light paired with movement celebrates the beauty of each woman…the pinned canvases transformed to subtle, light filled splendor.” Looking at each gown in the collection, these sentiments are evident. The gowns shimmer with each movement, revealing depth and detail hidden beneath cascades of sheer fabric, like light spilling into a darkened room. As each dress makes its way down the runway, the eye is drawn first to the cut, the construction, the silhouette. Then, with each step, hints of lace and embroidery, sparkle and shine, capture the imagination. Seeking each new detail, you won’t be able to take your eyes off the bride. These gowns practically glow as they move. Illusion necklines and backs, outlined and enhanced in intricate lace patterns, artistic embroidery and a variety of silhouettes, ranging from classic ball gowns to modern asymmetric minis, give the Fall/Winter collection something for every bride. Plunging necklines, low-cut backs, high-cut thighs, and sheer skirts and bodices will thrill brides looking for something sexy and sophisticated. Traditional full skirts and sleek sheaths, combined with pops of color and dazzling embellishments will give brides the perfect combination of classic bridal design and modern elegance. Whatever your personal taste, when you choose an Ines Di Santo gown for your wedding, you’ll be one step closer to the wedding of your dreams. Brides can make an appointment at the Toronto flagship boutique by visiting InesDiSanto.com. A frequently updated list of upcoming trunk shows around the country can also be found there.

‘Saffron’ head piece by Cheryl King Couture

Since 1932, Harry Winston has dazzled the world

with the luxe jewelry designs. By 1989, he was famous for owning several of the world’s most precious diamonds and gemstones, designing some of its most coveted engagement rings, and accessorizing the Hollywood elite. That year, he began offering Swiss timepieces to complement his unforgettable jewelry. In addition to classic men’s watches, Winston set out to design timepieces that refined women could proudly wear as jewelry and discreetly use as watches, in keeping with traditional etiquette. Set into elegant art deco-inspired, diamond-encrusted bands or hidden in elegant brooches, Harry Winston’s High Jewelry Timepieces are deceptively chic and slyly practical, and crafted to resemble the women who wear them-imbued equally with wisdom and grace, and beautiful enough to embellish life’s most important occasions. Harry Winston relied on the full force of its creativity and expertise in creating this High Jewelry timepiece. The curved lid of this exceptional jewel is entirely adorned with textured mother-of-pearl. Blushing pink sapphires and diamonds were expertly set using a unique technique -closed and rain setting –by the master artisan. The infinitely pink tones together with the shimmering pearls, infuses the case with additional charm.

SOMETHING OLD, BORROWED, NEW & BLUE By Julia LeBaron “Something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue, and a silver sixpence in her shoe.”

Many brides today are familiar with this old English rhyme, and continue the tradition of incorporating some of these items into their wedding celebration. However, not many brides know the origin of this little adage, and often the last little bit about the silver sixpence is left off the modern list of relics.

of the groom putting a silver coin under his foot for good luck. Many companies today make specialty sixpence coins specifically to commemorate this tradition. Traditions are a lovely part of any wedding. Enjoy the old, new, borrowed, and blue (and silver!) and just remember that the intentions behind them are all in good favor for future happiness and fortune.

This traditional poem dates back to the Victorian era, with some citing of prints going back to 1898 in England. Many cultures exhibit superstitions about the wedding day, but it was believed that if these good luck tokens were included, the bride and groom were sure to have good fortune in their life together. Something old symbolizes continuity between past and future generations. This is commonly an heirloom type of item: perhaps a pendant or hairpiece worn by the bride’s grandmother and mother, and intended to be passed down to a future daughter. Another clever idea is to incorporate pieces of a wedding gown worn by the bride’s mother into the bride’s new dress, such as lace or beading. Something new represents optimism and hope for the bride’s future life with her husband. Many brides consider the wedding gown to be their new item, but who doesn’t love some new jewelry to adorn them on their special day?

“The idea is that the bride “borrows” her friend’s happiness until she creates her own happiness in her new marriage.”

Something borrowed has a more deeply rooted origin. Some sources say that the borrowed item must come from a happily married sister or close friend of the bride. The idea is that the bride “borrows” her friend’s happiness until she creates her own happiness in her new marriage. Other sources link this item to fertility. It was suggested that the borrowed item be undergarments from a close friend who has already borne children. The bride would then in turn also be blessed with fertility and bear many children. Lastly, the silver sixpence in her shoe is a token of good fortune. A sixpence is a form of British currency worth six pennies, minted from 1551 to 1967, and is no longer used today. Traditionally, the bride’s father gave his daughter a sixpence on her wedding day to put in her left shoe to bring wealth and fortune to the new couple. It is suggested that this originates from a Scottish custom

If it isn’t within their budget, are you able to assist them with pieces of their purchase, such as ties or socks? In many cases you can purchase your own suit, and have them rent something complimentary (if budget is an issue). The Enchanting Haiku Mill

By Amy Rivers

At Haiku Mill, a stunning property located on Maui’s north shore, old world Europe meets natural Hawaii. This venue is located off the famous road to Hana, the scenic highway from East Maui where travelers can experience the natural beauty of Hawaii, marveling at gorgeous waterfalls and crossing majestic streams. Upon arrival at Haiku Mill, the bridal party and guests are already primed for a sublime island experience, and they won’t be disappointed. With its unmatched beauty and elegance, unique past, and lush, tropical location, Haiku Mill provides a romantically exotic backdrop for your dream wedding. With roots in the island’s sugar cane industry, Haiku Mill is steeped in over 150 years of history, making it an important landmark site. Weddings take place amongst a breathtaking mix of French-inspired décor, vine-draped ruins and spectacular flora. A stroll beneath the Mill’s archway is like a trip back in time.

A Venue Steeped in Hawaii’s Rich History In 1858, when the Haiku Sugar Company was chartered, construction began on the Mill. Three years later, upon its completion in 1861, the Mill processed its very first crop using the leading edge technology of the time: a steam engine. This marked the beginning of nearly 20 years of successful sugar cane production in Haiku. As Hawaiian monarchs in the past have demonstrated, the age of Kamehameha III was one of progress and innovation. The Mill was the first of its kind in Hawaii to use a steam engine to grind cane, thus modernizing the trade that prospered for two decades on Haiku’s soil. To recognize this important milestone, in 1986 the Haiku Sugar Mill was added to the distinguished National Register of Historic Places listings in Hawaii. In 1879, after years as a hub of sugar production, the Mill was abandoned, left for over a century to gently decay into ruin. Vines and lush vegitation grew Continued on page 101

and covered the thick stone walls. Together, this provided a framework for the beautiful structure we see today.

A Magical Restoration More than 20 years ago, with a fine attention to detail and respect for the historical land, an immense restoration effort began to revive the true spirit of the Mill. The abandoned ruins were transformed from a decrepit, crumbling sugar factory into the blossoming hidden treasure it is today. It was renamed as something simpler and more poetic: “Haiku Mill. In designing the space, the lush botanical surroundings were embraced. Nestled within the thick walls, dreams become reality amidst the quiet grace and elegance of Maui’s natural wonder. A cascading waterfall entices guests to the upper level of the Mill, revealing a panoramic view of the stone floor below. As night falls, the magic begins. A glass celing rests atop antique French cast iron columns in the center of the building, opening up into the Hawaiian sky. A majestic French chandelier beautifully enhances the ambiance.

Haiku Mill Today At Haiku Mill, you will experience the essence of Old Hawaii, and apreciate the dreamy, opulent touches that have been lovingly added to bring the Mill to life. Experience the sacred beauty and timelessness of this jewel on Maui.

Acquiring Beauty BY BEAUTY EDITOR-STEPHANIE KLASSE

T

here is a seemingly endless list of professionals to hire in order to expertly curate the perfect wedding day. As pieces of the puzzle begin to fall into place, the vision starts to become reality. Every bride needs to asses thier individual beauty needs to ensure the hair and makeup professionals can deliver the level of service desired and required. It can be challenging to sift through the sea of possibilites and weed out the hobbyists from the actual professionals. Remember that with such an investment in the day and with the photographs and video being so crucial, it is imporant to also make an investment in the bride’s beauty with the same care.

Additionally, it also needs to be able to withstand all of the tears, dancing and drinks the day has to offer. This is why an artists education and experience, as well as the types of products they use are so important. Only the proper product combined with the correct technique will deliver flawless lasting hair and makeup.

One thing to always remember when hiring true

Open communication is incredibly important, so work

bridal beauty professionals is that you are hiring a business and not just a person. Beauty businesses have numerous expenses. The cost of a makeup artist and hairstylist is rooted in a number of factors, and it is not always a simple supply versus demand. Costs for these business include, but are not limited to education, licensing, liability and kit insurances, kit supplies, and all that goes along with office overhead and business needs for on-location services. These are great items to ask potential artists regarding their fees. Are they properly licensed? Do they carry liability insurance? What is the quality of the products in the kit that they carry? What type of education have they had? These items are incredibly important when choosing a beauty professional.

Unfortunately, beauty hobbyists abound in the bridal market. For many beginners, bridal beauty seems like an ideal way to start their business and grow their skill set. As a bride, your makeup and hair needs to look the best and withstand some very challenging conditions. You need to look amazing, not just in person, but for photography and videography. Your makeup needs to be able to hold up under numerous lighting conditions, including natural light and flash, both inside and outside.

118

As the field candidates begins to narrow, the actual trial is very important. Remember that beauty pros are there to help guide each bride and consult in the process. Coming prepared to a consultation with images and ideas is crucial, but being open to suggestions so the best look can be custom designed is ideal. with somone who listens as well as contributes. Don’t underestimate personality. The stress of the actual wedding day can be eased by working with people that you enjoy being around and compliment your

You should choose a professional makeup artist to create a look to personality. After the trial, take pictures of yourself in compliment your style and those various lighting scenarios to see how the style works and emotions. holds up. Holly Piselli

Finally, it is important to secure your team with a contract. A true bridal professional will have their own contract. Read it thoroughly and address any concerns you may have before it is signed. Most hairstylists and makeup artists will have minimum fees for on-site services, because it is virtually impossible (and not ideal for brides) for an artist to book multiple weddings in a single day. This is when timing for the day will most likely be scheduled and any additional expenses such as travel and touch up supplies can be assessed and finalized. Never wait until the last minute to begin this process and

take your time doing research to ensure you get the right team in place. The best bridal beauty pros will be under contract for months and even up to a year or more before certain wedding dates. Do not put down a deposit or sign a contract unless you are sure you have found the trusted person or team to meet and exceed your beauty needs. Deposits are typically nonrefundable if you change your mind or realize you have not chosen the right artist for the job.

When a bride’s vision of the wedding day and of herself as a bride comes together, it is sublime and surreal. Finding the best beauty professionals in the business is a key componenet to making this vision a reality. Photos of this day last a lifetime and are continually regarded by friends, family and the wedded couple. With the right beauty team, any bride can ensure the day of the wedding and the lasting images will be a perfect representation of that vision. Although your dress is sure to be noticed and admired, your guests are there to see your union with your soul mate and all of the emotions that go with it. A bride’s face is the most noticed part of her ensemble!

Working with a great photographer and pulling yourself together like a celebrity will result in drool worthy photos of yourself. Something you will cherish when you are old and gray. When you look back and say ‘ I loved everything about that day.'

Surprise Engagement Edited by Ruth Shilling

An Engagement Story: Since I was little I have wanted to see New York City at Christmas, shop the windows, take a ride through Central Park in the snow . . . all of that jazz. So, last December in the middle of the week my boyfriend Mike surprised me with a plane ticket to NYC. I thought it was romantic, but that it was just a really amazing Christmas present (he does that kind of thing). He had even arranged for my time off with my boss. When we arrived Friday, we explored the city, and then went to see a show. On the way back to the hotel, we stopped by FAO Schwartz and were the only two in the whole store. It was like being a kid again. The next morning I woke up to the biggest bouquet of lilies I have ever seen. The note in them was the first of many clues in a scavenger hunt around the city; he’d planted clues all over the place! We went to Macy’s to see the famous windows, and a clue came with my coffee at the Starbucks in the store! I even got a card at the top of the Empire State Building from one of the staff! Towards the end of the day, he said we needed to change into some nice clothes. We went for a carriage ride in Central Park and there was a clue leading us to the Christmas tree at Rockefeller Plaza. Mike led us around the tree until he found the perfect spot (where he had also planted a photographer), and he handed me the final clue. I couldn’t even get through the whole card because I was tearing up. I looked down, and he was holding out my great-grandmother’s engagement ring. I just remember thinking about how beautiful it all was. It seemed like all of New York City was cheering around us! That was December 20, 2015. We have reservations to go back to Delmonico’s this year, the same place he took me after I said “yes” last year, we promised the waiter we would come back every year for dinner. As for how we met: we were introduced Online. He was a swim coach at the University of Florida and I knew there was an open position at the UF vet school for summer interns. So, I moved down from North Carolina and took both the job and the guy off the market! We started to see each other and both figured out pretty quickly that this was true love for both of us.

aura Benanti, the Tony Award-winning Broadway star and actress in hit series such as Supergirl, Nashville and The Good Wife, got hitched this November to Patrick Brown in the Big Apple. Lucky for us (and you), Novelty Bride Magazine got the inside scoop directly from Benanti herself on how the romantic evening played out. Much like any other lady who gets to plan her dream wedding, Benanti had each detail planned and picked out to a science. You’ll want to keep reading, this evening was stunningly beautiful, full of love, laughter, tears, and so much more.

How would you describe your wedding day?

What details do you love most about your design? I loved the mocha colored underlay and the way the lace felt both antique and totally fresh and of the moment.

When picking out the rings, what were the most important details you kept in mind? Patrick chose my beautiful engagement ring from Lori McLean Jewelry. Again, I love that it has an antique feel but is modern as well. I matched my beautiful rose gold band to the engagement ring. Working with Lori is a dream.

Warm and romantic. We wanted to focus on our family and friends.

What was your favorite part and/or most memorable moment?

What inspired your theme/color scheme?

The ceremony was very special to us. Our minister, Jan Powell, perfectly blended humor and sanctity into the 30 minute ceremony. Listening to my husband say his vows to me was the best moment of my life, and will live in my heart forever.

I wanted it to feel fall, but not orange. I went with a wine toned theme, which our florist (JR Floral) executed perfectly.

How was it working with Anne Barge for the designing of your wedding dress?

What was it like seeing your soon-to-be husband for the first time while walking down the aisle?

Anne is one of the kindest people I have ever met. She is The minute the doors opened and I saw him I burst out so loving. For me, you can feel that in her dresses. There is into joyful laughter. I have never been happier. love woven into the fabric.

Though opting for a traditional wedding ceremony overall, the couple did make some rather nontraditional choices. The customary mandap altar faced a sea of modern, goldtoned guest chairs with elaborate scroll programs on each. The bride walked down the aisle to an acoustic version of “Here Comes the Sun” by the Beatles. Then, following a proper Indian ceremony, the couple was showered in rose petals before they retreated to the country club in a vintage Franklin. The muted tones of this wedding were a surprising departure from the typically vivid colors of Indian weddings. Even Aishya’s exquisite lengha (traditional three piece outfit) was subtle in white and gold with touches of pastels. Like the bride’s garments, the décor is a calming wash of neutrals at first glance, but becomes a delight to study as you settle into the painstakingly curated details. The 20’s Paris inspiration was beautifully suited to the 1927 venue. Three rooms of the club were utilized, each with opulent toneon-tone linens layered with sparkling glass and metallic elements. The unusual choice of mirrored table toppers visually doubled all the glistening décor and soft candle light, leaving the reception venue glowing like the happy couple themselves. As a final nod to the period and style of the theme, Rohan and Aishya entered the reception to songs from “Midnight in Paris”. C’est magnifique!
