Himalayan Mountains - the most beautiful range of Earth’s highest peaks, including Mount Everest. Inspired by this Asian mountain range, Guo Pei named her new Spring/Summer collection “Himalaya”, and took us on a journey through her imagination. Aside from the dream-like garments, everything from the music, lighting, and seating was exquisitely detailed to make the audience feel as if they were actually sitting in these majestic mountains. Snow gently fell during the entire show, and the subtle lighting truly made it feel like you were viewing the gowns at dusk on a mountaintop.

Yanina Couture

Backstage before the show, each model was transformed with subtle makeup, such as the perfect shade of blush to make it look as though she had just been out in the cold. Frosted fake snow lined the eyebrows and eyelashes, and gold head ornaments specifically designed to match each model’s runway design exquisitely adorned their hair. Guo Pei told Novelty Luxe Magazine backstage that this Himalayan inspired collection “represents purity and is sacred.” Georges Hobeika George Hobeika’s Spring/Summer collection was dominated by three things: silk fringe, geometric cutouts, and sparkle, inspired by the Mediterranean and the glistening sensuality of golden sand. The geometric cutouts appeared on several pieces on both men and women. Whether fully beaded on a figure-hugging pencil skirt, a men’s open shirt, or in matte pastel on a throwback circle skirt, each unique design proved to be a red-carpet statement piece. Hobeika’s Fall/Winter line features Madame President. This collection is a glimpse into a new era of aspirations, where women and men lead in collective strength to demand respect, equality, and a better tomorrow. Georges Chakra The first several pieces of George Chakra’s Spring/Summer line were in all white, some paired with ruffled shawls, some with flowing lace veils and capes. Pants and shorts were mixed into the collection, and the skirts varied from floor length to mini skirt, impressing viewers with bold statements. Pastels worked their way onto the runway showcasing soft blues, lavenders, and mint. Pops of gold ranged from subtle to dramatic on several pieces. Refusing to stay in one box, short gowns with flats were mixed in-between floor-length gowns seamlessly. Chakra’s Fall/Winter collection features timeless elegance in primal colors of black, white, red, purple, gold, and touches of anthracite and greige. The color palette is reminiscent of artistic expression and prosperity. Franck Sorbier Spanish influence and a beautiful theatrical show worked magic for the crowd with live music and models flamenco dancing. Pieces ranged from solid black skirts, veils and ponchos, to bright

Yanina Couture’s youthful and fresh Spring/Summer collection was truly a standout. Mini skirts and jackets paired with knee-high skirts made it fun and sexy. Floral embroidery adorned several pieces. Oversized puffy sleeves and bishop sleeves are sure to start showing up more frequently in the future, on or off the runway. Tony Ward Tony Ward’s Spring/Summer collection had a way of drawing in an audience to see a world of beauty not many get to experience. The color palette transitioned from cream tones to yellows, pinks, mints, and whites. Oversized geometric appliqués showed up on several short dresses, as well as in the details of some skirts and shrugs. Stephane Rolland “Elegant, refined, simplistically incredible” - best describes this Spring/Summer showcase. A white pantsuit and solid cape set the tone for this classic runway collection. Clean lines, flowing textiles, simple cutouts, and just the right amount of beadwork made each piece unforgettable. High necks and long sleeves paired with hip high slits and open backs kept it feeling chic, while showing just the right amount of skin. Chanel Coco Chanel’s experiences of growing up in a convent have influenced her fashion line throughout her career. High necklines, clean lines, and uniform jackets are staples in her collections, and this was no exception. A series of jackets paired with skirts in black and white started the show in true Chanel style. Textured materials, double breasted buttons, and their unique bateau neckline made each piece simultaneously classic and fresh. Easing into more evening wear, flowing and clean lines were constant. A handful of pieces featured cut out backs, but always paired with a modest look in the front, giving just the perfect amount of sexiness. Alexis Mabille Dita Von Tease, in a sequin pantsuit, started off this show explaining that the Spring/Summer line would be made entirely of white, free from any color. Pants, crepe skirts, draped laces all flowed together effortlessly in this collection. White gowns were paired with illusion side cutouts. Jackets paired with lace shorts, tulle skirts, bishop sleeves, each piece is undeniably unique, and a quick glance is not nearly enough to fully capture each detail. Ralph & Russo A series of pastel colors rolled out this collection. Small details like feathers, bows, and sequins adorned specific gowns, along with a mix of luxurious fabrics and beadwork. Several looks purposely showcased and celebrated the start of their careers in fashion, along with new pieces aimed at capturing the coveted younger market. The red-carpet gowns were truly the stars of the show for the audience. Whether form fitting, flowing, or covered in sequins, there is no doubt every celebrity will be coveting these pieces for awards season. (Continued)

Zuhair Murad An array of pieces clearly inspired by ancient Egypt dominates this Spring/Summer runway show. Removing any hint of subtlety, these pieces were strong, yet undeniably feminine. One fully sequined gown took an estimated 800 hours to hand embroider, which is why we love Zuhair there is an art to the design that makes it fit for a Queen.

Christian Siriano-

Making Body Positivity Fashionable

nclusivity” and “diversity” are words that have not always been welcome in the fashion industry. Thoughts of the runway generally invoke images of women with unattainable figures and a world closed off to people sitting at home admiring the designs while lamenting their inaccessibility. In the past it seemed that fashion’s exclusivity was part of its appeal.

A look through Council of Fashion Designers of America designer Christian Siriano’s collection brings in a breath of fresh air. Siriano’s designs are featured on models of different shapes and sizes. The photos still represent everything we love about fashion - stunning styles, vibrant colors, bold patterns, and beautiful hair and makeup - but they make the world of fashion seem less closed off. The models are the epitome of luxury fashion while representing the people who watch runway shows and read fashion magazines from the comfort of home; the ones who are now invited into the secret society of fashion. Siriano launched his collection in 2008 and by 2018 was listed as one of Time’s 100 Most Influential People in the World as a champion of body inclusivity in fashion. Siriano’s goal is to make people feel good. Such a goal seemed rebellious or even revolutionary when Siriano first launched his collection, but it is now a growing trend. Consumers are no longer content with simply looking at fashion. They want to wear and enjoy designs made to look flattering for their various shapes and sizes, whether or not those shapes and sizes are “sample-size”. Siriano’s forward thinking has certainly paid off. Including plus-size options in his collection tripled his business, even factoring in the added costs necessarily involved with modifying patterns to accommodate different sizes. Siriano has showcased his fashion and accessory collections by partnering with Nordstrom, Victoria’s Secret, Puma, Best Buy, and other retailers. He even has a retail store in New York City that features clothing and accessories from

28

by Prasanthi S. Paritala his own collection and collections by other designers. The store is unique in that instead of going through a buyer, the designers can more directly control the items made available in the store. Of course, Siriano’s efforts to connect with the average consumer have not deterred his place among Hollywood’s elite. In 2018 Siriano celebrated his tenth anniversary with a milestone show featuring 72 incredible looks. That year he also set a record by dressing an unprecedented number of 17 women at the Academy Awards and nine at the Emmy Awards. His name is synonymous with memorable red carpet moments. It seems almost laughable now that Leslie Jones had to take to Twitter to find a dress for the premier of the Ghostbusters remake, a film featuring a cast of exceptionally talented and body-diverse women. But when other designers hesitated to dress Ms. Jones, Siriano responded with a gorgeous, show-stopping red gown. And the world is not likely to forget Siriano’s stunning tuxedo ball gown for Billy Porter at the 2019 Oscars, which became the most searched red carpet look of the year. When awards season hit in 2020, Siriano’s designs dressed celebrities including Chrissy Metz, Kelly Ripa, Demi Lovato, and Lizzo. Siriano’s positive impact extends beyond inclusivity on the runway and red carpet. In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Christian Siriano atelier paused its clothing production and began producing face masks and other health care materials for emergency medical personnel and health care workers.

“Siriano’s positive impact extends beyond inclusivity on the runway and red carpet.”

A TRIBUTE TO THE 92ND OSCARS by JULIA BUTLER Every year, millions of people tune in to watch one of the most anticipated red carpet events, the Academy Awards, also known as The Oscars. This year, over 23 million viewers anxiously waited to catch a glimpse of their favorite stars dressed to the nines by world famous designers, and everyone wondered who would win those coveted golden statues. The 92nd Academy Awards took place February 9, 2020 at the Dolby Theater at Hollywood and Highland Center in Hollywood. This year’s program mimicked the outline of the previous year, which lacked having just one master of ceremonies after Kevin Hart stepped down from the task. Instead, several stars and performers contributed to the flow and presentation of the show. Janelle Monáe kicked off the ceremony with a varied performance that made mention of the need to recognize diversity in Hollywood. She was followed by many more noteworthy performers including Elton John, Idina Menzel, Randy Newman, Eminem, and Billie Eilish.

Joker received the highest number of Oscar nominations this year, 11 in total, and won two. 1917 (three wins), The Irishman (zero wins), and Once Upon a Time in Hollywood (two wins) followed closely behind, bringing ten nominations each to the table as strong contenders. Best Picture was awarded to the film Parasite, produced by Kwak Sin Ae and Bong Joon Ho. Renee Zellweger took home the Best Actress Oscar for her role in Judy, while Joaquin Phoenix won Best Actor for his portrayal of the unforgettable Joker in the film Joker. Best Supporting Actress was won by Laura Dern for Marriage Story and Brad Pitt was awarded Best Supporting Actor for Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. Of course, many of us are guilty of tuning in just for the fashion. This year’s Academy Awards saw a return of several classic styles and very flattering cuts on the ladies. One of our favorite looks that deserve mention came from Janelle Monáe, who brought the bling in a hooded silver gown by Ralph Lauren, reportedly adorned in 168,000 Swarovski Crystals that took over 600 hours to make. Brie Larson was also stunning in a fabulous blush colored gown from Hedi Slimane’s Celine collection, featuring more than 120,000 sequins and 110,000 glass beads. Chrissy Metz looked gorgeous in a red Christian Siriano dress that just perfectly and softly grazed the floor and focused the sparkle on her Forevermark Jewelry. Several stars kept their looks simple and classic, like Julia Louis-Dreyfus in a navy gown by Vera Wang, and Mindy Kaling

36

wearing a yellow Dolce & Gabbana number. Gorgeous accent jewelry from Harry Weinstein (over 60 carats!) and Chopard really made these sleek looks pop. The red carpet is nothing, if not an opportunity to make a statement. Many stars (and designers) grab the chance to declare what needs to be said. Natalie Portman did exactly that by showing up in a Maria Grazia Chiuri–designed embroidered Dior gown with matching cape that had the names of snubbed Hollywood women sewn along its edges. Her statement of female solidarity was widely appreciated by many. Kristin Wiig turned heads and caused many mixed reactions with her ruffled red Valentino dress. And Billie Eilish, who also later that evening performed the beloved Beatles’ song “Yesterday”, strutted the red carpet on her own fashion terms in a head-to-toe tweed Chanel bouclé suit. Billy Porter gave everyone something to talk about with his bold custom couture outfit designed by Giles Deacon (who also designed Pippa Middleton’s wedding dress), complete with platform Jimmy Choo boots. The extravagant royal look was reportedly inspired by the decor of Kensington Palace. A few stars took the opportunity to make a statement about sustainable fashion by wearing outfits that they had previously worn. Jane Fonda looked just as marvelous presenting the Best Picture award in a red beaded Elie Saab gown that she had already worn to the 2014 Cannes Film Festival. She was accompanied by her famous red coat, which she declared in November 2019 was the last article of clothing she would ever buy. Elizabeth Banks also recycled a Badgley Mischka dress for the Vanity Fair after-party that she had worn 16 years ago. And Joaquin Phoenix made headlines by wearing the same Stella McCartney tux ensemble to every event for the entire 2020 awards season. Fun fact: The golden Oscar statue is a figure of a knight holding a crusader’s sword. He stands on a reel of film with five spokes, which signify the five original branches of the Academy: actors, directors, producers, technicians, and writers. According to Wikipedia, “the Academy officially adopted the name “Oscar” for the trophies in 1939. However, the origin of the nickname is disputed. One biography of Bette Davis, who was a president of the Academy in 1941, claims she named the award after her first husband, band leader Harmon Oscar Nelson. A frequently mentioned originator is Margaret Herrick, the Academy executive secretary, who, when she first saw the award in 1931, said the statuette reminded her of “Uncle Oscar”, a nickname for her cousin Oscar Pierce.”

Boss Babes: Resourceful, Determined Women by Sophie Sherwin

W

hat do highly successful women have in common? What nugget of wisdom would they pass on to someone who is just starting out in business, especially right now? With the unexpected events 2020 has brought us so far, business owners are feeling this collective consciousness of fear and instability. So what can we learn from these women on how to thrive - not just survive - in these unusual times? When you think of successful women or the phrase “Boss Babe”, there are the usual powerhouses who spring to mind, such as Oprah Winfrey, Ellen DeGeneres, Rihanna, and Sheryl Sandberg, to name just a few. However, there are also not-sowell-known women knocking down the door of the title “super successful”. More women are now making it onto Forbes’ lists of powerful, successful, rich, selfmade, or billionaires. It is such an inspiration to focus on those who built their success starting with “nothing”. The majority were not handed a silver spoon, business or money, but they are self-made from pure determination, tenacity, resilience, and integrity. Forbes has stated that it

60

“...defines ‘self-made’ as someone who built a company or established a fortune on [her] own, rather than inheriting some or all of it.”

and thought about what was needed at that moment. So, she slowed down the pace of the business and said to a NY Times journalist, “Progress is a lot of simple little decisions.” She has gone on to balloon the success of the company and landed as Forbes #1 America’s Richest Self-Made Woman for two years in a row. Diane was quoted in Forbes, November 2010 when asked about her business success, “I don’t think I have ever taken any ‘offbeat’ advice. Actually, I don’t know I take any advice very often. I trust my own instincts and seek out information so I can make fully informed decisions. That’s what’s worked for me. “I’ve always been very driven and knew that to get where I wanted to go, I could never give up”. -Diane Hendricks Bethenny Frankel is another Boss Babe entrepreneur, who started her journey with Skinny Girl Cocktails and has subsequently dipped her fingers into an impressive number of pies. She has now added the credits of best selling author, tv producer, philanthropist, investor, lifestyle influencer, and importantly, a mother. It seems in this pandemic her energy has not wavered and she is just as busy as ever. How is she thriving? In an interview with Taylor Locke while in lockdown and giving tips on how to still be productive, Frankel said, “I always say, ‘All roads lead to Rome,’ which means you will get derailed and may hit a roadblock, but as long as you’re moving forward and staying positive and being productive, you’ll end up getting to where you want to get to, even if its a circuitous road.”

Diane Hendricks, a self-made billionaire, certainly fits the criteria. She started from humble beginnings in Wisconsin and is now worth $7 billion, according to Forbes in June 2019. By the time she was 22 years old she had a child and had filed for divorce. Determined to raise her son on her own and make money, she started studying for her brokers license while selling new construction. Who said having a child sets you back? After garnering success selling custom made homes, eventually she met and married Ken Hendricks, and together they started a business buying real estate. Their next venture was to buy three roofing stores, which birthed ABC Supplies Inc.

When it comes to getting to the top of her game, Serena Williams is no stranger to roadblocks. Williams is best known as the #1 tennis player in the world, but also impressively, the first athlete to make it onto the Forbes list of America’s Richest Self-Made Women. In addition to amassing wealth and success on the court, she has now added a clothing line, as well as Serena Ventures, a company who invests in startups, focusing on companies founded by women and minorities.

Their empire was expanding but, as the saying goes – “when life throws you lemons...” She was thrown a whole lemon tree when, sadly, her husband died unexpectedly. She was faced with running this huge company and 30 other businesses on her own, but she did not give up. She stopped

It seems to be a theme that resilience is key to success and staying on top. Williams is another woman who has not let childbirth set her back - returning to the court and tournaments only six months after giving birth. Getting back to her passion did not come easily though, and perhaps she took her own

advice of once saying, “I really think a champion is defined not by their wins, but by how they can recover when they fall” (The National, September 2012). She is another example of coming from humble beginnings. Williams was homeschooled and taught tennis on the streets by her father, rather than being sent to a tennis academy and the junior tournament circle. Williams spoke of her father’s way of doing things: “ It really shaped me for the rest of my career, both on and off the court in terms of taking a chance and how to be different and how to stand out ” (Forbes, June 2019). This philosophy is reflected in her businesses, which is allowing her success to continue. “Nothing good really happens unless you surround yourself with good people,” Barbara Corcoran tweeted in April 2020, when she was asked about her business success. Best known for being on Shark Tank, a real estate mogul, motivational speaker, and author, she certainly knows a thing or two about business. Corcoran’s childhood home was a two-bedroom apartment which housed nine siblings and two parents in a rough area. Straight D student, at the time she did not know she had dyslexia so she spent her childhood proving to everyone that she was not stupid. Corcoran admits that is what motivated her. After failing at 22 jobs by the time she was 23 years old, Corcoran borrowed $1,000 from her boyfriend at the time and they opened a small real estate office in New York. With her love for real estate, they grew the business and in two years she had 14 agents and over $500,000 worth of sales. When the relationship broke down, she set up The Corcoran Group and became the biggest brokerage in New York and a self-made millionaire. One of the lessons she shares is advising business owners to «expand before you are ready» and then trust that it will work out (www.speakers.com, June 2016). Being a woman amongst a sea of male sharks is something she considered to be a great asset, as she stood out instead of allowing them to swallow her up. Reflecting on her life now, she says, “It is a miracle, you never know what life brings”. We cannot look at successful “rags to riches” stories without mentioning one of the world’s most famous authors, Ms. J.K.Rowling, whose story is well

documented. “Poor and almost homeless, the ‘Harry Potter’ creator eventually became the world’s first billionaire author,” said Tim Ott, in February 2019 for www.biography.com, (although Rowling has denied being a billionaire, according to Business Insider). Whether she is or not, we can all certainly agree she is highly successful in what she loves and followed her childhood dream to become a writer. 1990 was when the world of “Harry Potter” was officially born, but it was not until five years later that the manuscript was finished. She had a dozen rejections from publishers before being picked up by a small publishing house and as they say, the rest is history. Within ten years of her first “Harry Potter” book being published, Rowling became a selfmade millionaire. “ I was set free because my greatest fear had been realized and I

have amazing experiences from women in the field of art and entertainment, real estate, beverage, sport, etc. - so no field is off limits to reach amazing heights. These women have given some very useful tips which anyone can use, right now and moving forward. Williams, Corcoran, Frankel, and Rowling have all faced and experienced failure and rejection, but they say that’s part of business. How you respond to it is the most important aspect. Corcoran believes that what makes a great salesperson stand out in a sea of good salespeople is “how well people could take a hit” - they would take less time feeling sorry for themselves, and focus on continued forward action.

“I have failed so much, but I have learnt so much more in life from my failures than my successes.” -Bethenney Frankel (Interview with Chelsea Logan, February 2016) “Why do I talk about the benefits of failure? Simply because failure meant a stripping away of the inessential.” -J.K. Rowling (2008 Harvard commencement address)

still had a daughter that I adored, and I had an old typewriter and a big idea. And so rock bottom became a solid foundation on which I rebuilt my life,” Rowling said about her journey, in her 2008 Harvard commencement address. Another incredible inspiration comes from Gabby Bernstein. Bernstein started telling her story after reaching rock bottom in her early 20s. She conveys how soaking up spiritual principles helped her find her way out from the bottom of a bottle, drugs, and darkness. She is now a speaker, best selling author, and guest on Oprah’s stage. Gabby wrote recently on her website in February 2020 that the number one tool she has always used in life and business was said to her by a good friend, Marie Forleo, “Everything is figureoutable.” She admonishes that you should ferry this mindset around with you. She went on to say, “And I learned what it meant to work smarter, not harder.” As we have seen, a highly successful business can start from anywhere. We

“The biggest challenge in business isn’t your competition, it’s what goes on inside your own head.” -Barbara Cocoran, (Entreprenuer, April 2013) “Much of our anxiety and stress comes when we’re focused on fear and disconnected from the voice of our inner guide.” -Gabby Bernstein (Gabrielle Bernstein, 2014: “Miracles Now: 108 Life-Changing Tools for Less Stress, More Flow, and Finding Your True Purpose”) The story behind the determination to succeed is very personal to each and every business woman. But the drive is about believing in yourself and getting back up after taking a fall. Something that provides comfort in these shakey times is the fact that we are all in the same boat. We all have to look change in the face and adapt. That is what good business (and personal) sense is all about. And in true words by J.K. Rowling: “Anything is possible if you’ve got enough nerve.”

A Year for Better Health by RebeccaMarie

T

imes are tough right now we live in a world that has come to a stand still because of the developments with the COVID-19 virus. Now more than ever, it is vital that we keep ourselves moving in order to stay positive, healthy, and happy. Everything we do in our daily lives affects our mood and decision-making abilities for positive living. We see people coming together and singing on balconies, learning new talents, spending more time with family, enjoying new hobbies, making masks for hospital workers, and supporting fellow neighbors by providing food and personal items. It’s important to stay up to date on current news but what is more important is the environment around you and healthy thinking. Here are some ideas for a better lifestyle that everyone can benefit from. 1) “You Are What You Eat!”

When I was younger, my parents began juicing in the mornings. It wasn’t something that was completely enjoyable at first and I didn’t understand the benefits till I started growing out of my adolescence. Once I made more juice recipes my skin began to glow, I felt more energized, and my body felt so much healthier. Vitamins and nutrients were making me glow! They remove toxins, improve digestion, help decrease excess middle weight, and aid in overall better health with anti -inflammatory benefits. Here’s one of my favorite juice cleanse recipes: 5 celery sticks

5 whole carrots 1/4 slice of green pepper 1 apple Put all ingredients through a juicer, as instructed by the manufacturer. 2) Move Your Body!

Physical exercise is a necessity for everyone. Exercise is proven to help combat depression. Take a piece of advice from everyone’s favorite Elle Woods of the film Legally Blonde: “Exercise gives you endorphins. Endorphins make you happy. Happy people just don’t shoot their husbands, they just don’t.” *Iconic*. Even when the gym isn’t an option, to get those endorphins flowing, get outside and go for a jog or a walk. Or if the weather outside is a bit too frightful, a simple workout indoors can still boost your health and promote those life-saving endorphins. Sometimes we have to get creative depending on our location, but yoga is a workout that requires little space or equipment - just your body. Other benefits of yoga include decreased stress, relief of anxiety, improved heart health, greater core strength, possible reduction in chronic pain, and better sleep. (Mentioned by www.healthline.com) 3) Sleeeeeep...

When we are living in a time of working from home, our habits change and we can afford to be a little more relaxed. But the one thing that never changes is how much sleep we need. A vital constant in my life is how I absolutely

need 8 hours of sleep each night. Our bodies benefit from being on a schedule and adequate sleep decreases the risk of heart attacks, increases immunity, helps maintain a good sex life, decreases erectile dysfunction in men, maintains healthy skin, and keeps us happier. If you’re anything like me and end up sleeping fewer hours than your body needs, you can become the grouchy person nobody loves to be around. So get some zzzz’s... 4) Inner Anti-Aging Remedies

Beneficial anti-aging nutrients are all around us. This extra time at home could be a good time to focus on skin care maintenance from the inside out. Some of the best antiaging remedies are found in our own kitchens and not always in a crème. Some grocery items include watercress, papaya, blueberries, grapes, broccoli, spinach, avocado, sweet potatoes, and pomegranate seeds. All it takes is a consistent change and you’ll start to see long term benefits. Coenzyme Q10 is an antioxidant that our bodies produce naturally, but can also be purchased in supplement form. This supplement is not for everyone but it has been proven to fight free radicals (Mentioned by www.cancer.gov) that damage our bodies and break down cells that cause faster aging. (Seek a doctor’s advice before taking supplements.) Collagen powder is another amazing supplement that you can add to your drink just once a day. If you want to see benefits, start now and years down the road people won’t ever have to know your ‘real age’.

5) Zoom Time

7) Managing Stress

Staying connected to friends and family is crucial in these times of social isolation. How wonderful it is to live in an age where we can constantly be connected with people we love, especially when our normal social activities are restricted. A platform like www.zoom.us is a great tool to have ‘conference calls’ with large groups of family or friends. It almost feels like you’re looking at a Brady Bunch photo during the call but you sure can enjoy laughter, stories, tears, and support.

One particular thing I notice around me, is how much stress and anxiety can take a toll on our ability to enjoy life. We all have it and in different quantities, and the best ways to handle it are definitely based on the situation. But sometimes it helps to take a break, make time to pamper yourself... go make your favorite dessert or ride your bike. Take a break, talk to a friend, or even all of the above. Counselor Andrew J. Bernstein said, “Remember that stress doesn’t come from what’s going on in your life. It comes from your thoughts about what’s going on in your life.”

6) Power of Positivity…

It’s understandably difficult, who can be positive 100% of the time? It’s a mental focus and one thing that helps in times of adversity is to make a list of all of the things you love and things you are grateful for. There is always something to be grateful for - whether you just got a handwritten letter from a friend across the world or you picked up your favorite inseason peaches at the market. It’s the little things in life.

*Most importantly, if you are struggling with the changes and disruptions of this unprecedented time of life, don’t hesitate to ask for help. Reach out to friends and family, let them know you are struggling and need to talk about it. Many counselors are offering online sessions and therapeutic resources. Help is always available!

KEEPING MAKEUP PRODUCTS

CLEAN

owadays, people are taking more precautions than ever when it comes to sanitation. We’re all washing our hands frequently, using hand sanitizers when a wash isn’t possible, and being more conscious about shared spaces and objects. But one thing that folks frequently neglect to clean and sanitize is their beauty products! We at Alcone Company have been serving the pro community for over 65 years, and part of that means providing professional makeup artists with the best tools to keep their products clean and their clients safe. Here are our top five products, along with a handful of tips and tricks to keep your beauty routine clean! 1) Alcone Company Professional Makeup Sponges: One of our best sellers, Alcone’s non-latex sponges are the top choice of professional makeup artists the world over. One great way to keep your liquid or creme products sanitary is to apply them with a disposable applicator such as our non-latex professional makeup sponges. Studies have found that one of the most common sources of bacteria in your makeup bag is unwashed brushes and blender sponges, and when those make contact with your makeup, bacteria are transferred. Why not skip that step and grab a disposable (and biodegradable) sponge? Our non-latex sponges are denser than a standard drug store wedge, which means they won’t absorb your product but will instead press it into the skin, giving a natural, flawless finish. Pro tip: When wet, they will expand like a blender sponge, but you won’t have to worry about washing it afterward. Experience the dfference!

2) Dante Makeup Brush Cleaner: Let’s face it, not everything can be applied with a sponge. Sometimes you need to reach for your favorite makeup brushes to achieve the perfect effect. Dermatologists recommend cleaning your makeup brushes every seven to ten days, but professional makeup artists clean between each client. How do they do it so quickly, you ask? Meet Dante Makeup Brush Cleaner! Dante is a ready-to-use solution that cleans and disinfects both natural and synthetic brushes quickly and easily. You can either spritz a small amount directly onto your brush and then wipe the brush onto a clean dry cloth or paper towel (repeating as necessary), or for those extra dirty brushes you can pour a small amount into a container and dip your brush. Unlike soap and water, this solution will dry in minutes. Pro tip: Dante is colorless and odorless, but for a light scent, feel free to add a few drops of your favorite essential oil! 3) Cinema Secrets All-Natural Brush Soap: Quick-drying cleaners like Dante are a favorite of pros for «spot cleaning» on set, but in order to truly get everything out and condition your brush fibers, nothing beats good old fashioned soap and water. Cinema Secrets has long been a leader in creating pro makeup materials, and their vegan brush soap is no exception. This all-natural professional makeup brush soap is formulated with pure coconut oil, so it will quickly melt out product and remove stubborn makeup stains and bacteria. Best of all, the formula is designed to condition brush fibers, leaving them silky smooth after they’ve dried. To use - simply

wet your makeup brush, swirl into the soap and gently massage onto the included scrub pad to work up a lather, then rinse thoroughly. Repeat if necessary. Lay out to air dry overnight and your brushes will be like new in the morning. Pro tip: This brush soap is also perfect for cleaning your blender sponges! 4) Cozzette Brush Vessel: One common mistake folks make with their makeup brushes is that between uses, they toss them into a drawer or leave them out on their vanity. One way to help maintain their shape, as well as keep them free of dust/bacteria, is to keep them safely stored in a Cozzette Brush Vessel. Roque Cozzette thoughtfully designed these vessels for professional makeup artists to hold their precious brushes and tools, but they’re a perfect way for the everyday makeup user to keep their brushes clean and tidy, and if the vessel itself needs a quick clean it can be thrown right into the dishwasher. Pro tip: When your brush vessel is open, you have two halves, a base and a lid. Many makeup artists use the empty lid to store dirty brushes while they work, so they can keep track of which brushes need to be cleaned and which ones are fresh! And for a travel-friendly alternative, check out MyKitCo’s collapsible My PVC Pods, which come in two sizes and are also available through Alcone Company. 5) BeautySoClean Cosmetic Sanitizing Mist: We’ve covered when to use disposable applicators and how to clean and maintain brushes, but what about your actual makeup? BeautySoClean to the rescue! Oils from your skin and skincare products ultimately wind up on the surface of your makeup, leaving bacteria behind – the results of this build-up (glazing) can be seen on pressed powders and eyeshadows. Common rubbing alcohol is an effective sanitizer, but it can dry certain products out, and frankly, it’s not the easiest to find on the shelves right now! This custom blend of alcohol and emollients is antibacterial/antimicrobial and will sanitize the surface of your makeup products in about ten seconds without drying them out. Simply hold the cosmetic sanitizer mist six inches from your product (after use), spray once, allow it to evaporate, and put your makeup away resting assured that you’ve killed any surface bacteria and left your product as good as new!

Wonder Woman 1984 December 25th of 2020

The only thing brighter than its neon movie posters are the stars Gal Gadot and Chris Pine making their way back to the DC comic-book-inspired roles of Wonder Woman and Steve Trevor in the upcoming movie that’s sure to bring the best part of the 80’s to the big screen in Wonder Woman 1984. Director Patty Jenkins continues the story of heroine Princess Diana of Themyscira (or Diana Prince), as she finds herself further in the future than the previous movie, set during WWI. A few other familiar names make an appearance, such as Kristin Wiig in a strong female supporting role, as Cheetah. Pedro Pascal will be removing his Mandalorian helmet to play Maxwell Lord. Aline Bonetto (Production design) and Lindy Hemming return as costume designer for the sequel

With an aptonym (name that sounds suited to its owner) like Guy, Ryan Reynolds is hardly what you’d think of when you imagine a hero. Reynolds, an NPC (Non-Player character) plays a bank teller that falls into the starring role in the video game world in this irreverent comedy-action adventure movie, demonstrating that game NPCs are more than just background eye candy. These characters are usually happy to stick to their arena, follow the rules, and hand out story-developing hints and clues. But in this movie, directed by Shawn Levy, Guy (Reynolds) isn’t complacent in his daily life where chaos reigns and bank heists abound. Jodie Comer (Molotov Girl) and Taika Waititi, who previously worked with Reynolds in Green Lantern, join the list of familiar names to create an entire virtual world where the shenanigans rule and other character aptonyms are ridiculously suited. Not yet rated, now set for release in May 2021.

Radioactive

Released July, 24 2020

From Bond girl to girl who knows how to bond - elements, that is - Rosamund Pike’s portrayal of Marie Curie, historic Nobel Prize-winning female chemist and physicist famous for the discovery of the elements polonium and radium, in Radioactive is a shining execution, rich with the difficulties of its male dominated time period. This movie, based on the graphic novel “Radioactive: Marie & Pierre Curie: A Tale of Love and Fallout” is directed by Marjane Satrapi and stars Sam Riley (best known as Diaval, a shape shifting crow in Maleficent) as Pierre Curie. The film is now released by Amazon Studios.

Black Widow Releasing 2021

After crying over the loss of our favorite Marvel heroine in Avengers: End Game, Black Widow finally has her own title movie coming to screens in November 2020. Scarlett Johanson has starred in the role since the beginning of Iron Man 2. Black Widow takes place between the films Captain America: Civil War and Avengers: Infinity War, if you are planning a marathon Marvel movie weekend (or week, considering there are now 24 movies in all to binge). Natasha Romanoff, a.k.a Black Widow, is your tough girl female protagonist and spy that keeps all the Marvel men in check. In past films she has alluded to a ledger still in the red, meaning she has deeds to atone for, and this film attempts to fill in parts of her dark past. Still in production,

there is a lot of speculation over which other Marvel characters might make a cameo in her story.

Greyhound

Released July, 10 2020 Tom Hanks, who also wrote this screenplay, depicts the lead role of inexperienced naval Commander Ernest Krause in Greyhound, a film inspired by actual events during the early parts of America’s entry into WWII. Commander Krause is sent to lead a convoy of allies into the fight, but first must cross the Atlantic Ocean’s hostile waters, filled with german U-boats (WWII submarines). This American war film, directed by Aaron Schneider, is based on a 1955 novel called The Good Shepherd by C.S. Forester. Not new to historical WWII films, Hanks has played the drunk coach of a women’s baseball team in A League of Their Own and an army captain in Saving Private Ryan. The film’s release date was July of 2020.
