He sold every one of his motorcycles, plus every bit of his motorcycle gear, and put the money towards buying his first car with hand controls.

Last year, NMEDA had the opportunity to partner, once again, with United Spinal Association for the second Automotive Mobility Awareness Tour. With strict travel and COVID-19 rules in place, we were fortunate to be able to connect in person with hospital administrators, case managers, and rehabilitation specialists to shine the light on what NMEDA and our members have to offer. Trevor Jennings, Director of Partner Relations and Amy Shoppman, Director of Government Relations represented NMEDA on the tour, alongside Nick LiBassi, Vice President of Partnership Expansion with United Spinal Association. Each tour stop began with a “lunch and learn,” where we surveyed the attendees to gauge their familiarization of NMEDA and auto mobility products. The results were mixed, so we seized the opportunity to share information about the Quality Assurance Program (QAP), the importance of purchasing a wheelchair accessible vehicle (WAV) and mobility equipment from a NMEDA dealer, the dealer locator tool, the benefits of the mediation program if a need should ever arise, and in general how NMEDA is a resource center for caregivers and individuals with mobility challenges.
After the presentation, hospital staff was invited to tour the wheelchair accessible vehicles brought by local NMEDA dealers. This gave attendees a great opportunity to explore the vehicles and other mobility devices, as well as ask questions. Dealers were encouraged to hand out marketing materials, engage with the hospital staff and show off the latest technology in the vehicles. NMEDA also brought in a special treat so everyone could enjoy cupcakes or ice cream in the sunshine outside.
By sharing the latest innovations in wheelchair accessible vehicles and equipment with spinal cord injury centers like MossRehab in Philly and Northridge Hospital in LA, we are able to spread awareness with the front-line workers that help newly injured people.
—Danny Langfield, CEO, National Mobility Equipment Dealers Association
Inspiring Stories, Lives Changed As part of our efforts to spread the word about NMEDA, as well as the adaptive solutions to be featured at each stop, we interviewed and highlighted a few individuals in each community we visited. Throughout our stops, we heard so many inspiring stories. Whether faced with a debilitating diagnosis or having suffered a serious injury, these individuals rose to each challenge thrown their way. We crafted and distributed press releases about the individuals and worked to garner media coverage across online platforms. Due to some of the hospital restrictions, we were not allowed to have media or photographers onsite, but we did receive coverage on a few of the tour stops. Below are some highlights on the individuals we were lucky enough to meet.
When we got our first van last year, it was the first sense of normalcy we felt in years because we didn’t have to rely on anyone and could be completely independent. We could just drive. It’s just amazing and a blessing because when I get in the car, I don’t need to worry about struggling.
—Julia Bonamassa
This year, my friends were all fishing places I couldn’t get to,” he says. “Next year, I’ll be fishing places they can’t get to—all because of my truck, my kayak, and the help of groups like Triumph Foundation.

I couldn’t have raised my children the way we have been able to without our van.
—Madison Power
2021 Automotive Mobility Awareness Tour Comes to Barrow Neurological Institute TAMPA, Fla. (September 24, 2021) – It’s truly difficult to comprehend what it is like to go from being independent to having to rely on others as your complete mode of transportation. But for nearly 18,000 Americans every year who experience a spinal cord injury, this is exactly what happens. For Cave Creek resident Madison Powers, she was a senior in high school traveling with a group of friends to the state championship when the driver lost control, flipped the car and ejected Powers, leaving her a paraplegic. For Anthem resident John Mezydlo, he was in college when he jumped into a river, hitting bottom and becoming a quadriplegic. Today, both of them live full lives because they have wheelchair-accessible vehicles. “I couldn’t have raised my children the way we have been able to without our van,” Powers says. On September 28, both Powers and Mezydlo will be participating in the second stop of the 2021 Automotive Mobility Awareness Tour at Barrow Neurological Institute in Phoenix. At the event, the National Mobility Equipment Dealers Association (NMEDA) and United Spinal Association will bring accessibility solutions to the forefront and showcase all the ways hospital administrators, case managers, occupational and physical therapists, automotive mobility dealers and manufacturers are working to improve the lives of their clients. "By sharing the latest innovation in wheelchair accessible vehicles and equipment with centers like Barrow, we are truly able to assist more people who need the specialized vehicles and adaptive equipment that our automotive mobility dealer members across North America provide," said Danny Langfield, CEO, National Mobility Equipment Dealers Association. "After missing more than a year of connecting in person with our front-line healthcare workers, we are really looking forward to this tour again." United Spinal Association will specifically be showcasing its efforts to assist the 17,730 Americans who experience spinal cord trauma each year. "Our organization specializes in improving the lives of individuals after a spinal cord injury," said Vincenzo Piscopo, President & CEO, United Spinal Association. "We're looking forward to connecting with organizations like NMEDA and the local facilities to partner with us in bringing this information to the public." Over the years, Mezydlo became a national competitor in wheelchair rugby. Today, Mezydlo is married with twin daughters. He works with United Access, a local Phoenix company providing wheelchair-accessible vehicles, because he wants to help others like him. “People need to understand there are options out there,” Mezydlo says. “There’s a big world ready for you to be a part of by using these vehicles.”
News Articles
2021 Automotive Mobility Awareness Tour Kicks Off at Moss Rehabilitation Center TAMPA, FL. (August XX, 2021) – When Berlin, NJ resident Julia Bonamassa took the field for her youth soccer and softball games at 10 years old, she started falling down a lot. She began having trouble running. A few months later, her identical twin sister, Jessica, started experiencing the same thing. “When Julia was running in soccer, her leg started to give out and collapse. We all thought it was a growth spurt,” says Jessica Bonamassa. “We were very active, playing soccer and softball and in the outdoor world, kayaking, riding quads and shooting.”
Unfortunately, it wasn’t a growth spurt.
The twins were diagnosed with FHSD, a form of muscular dystrophy. This is a progressively deteriorating muscle disease, which has no cure or treatment to prevent progression. A decade later, the twin girls will be going to separate colleges for the first time in their lives with Julia attending Rutgers University, Camden, and Jessica attending Rowan University, both as juniors. Julia plans to eventually go to law school or into national security and Jessica wants to be in the public relations/marketing field. Today, despite their diagnosis, they live independent lives because of the assistance of their wheelchair accessible vehicle. On August 26, Jessica and Julia Bonamassa will be participating in the first stop of the 2021 Automotive Mobility Awareness Tour at Moss Rehabilitation Center in Elkins Park. "By sharing the latest innovation in wheelchair accessible vehicles and equipment with centers like Moss, we are truly able to assist more people who need the specialized vehicles and adaptive equipment that our automotive mobility dealer members across North America provide," said Danny Langfield, CEO, National Mobility Equipment Dealers Association. "After missing more than a year of connecting in person with our front-line healthcare workers, we are really looking forward to starting this tour again." United Spinal Association will specifically be showcasing its efforts to assist the 17,730 Americans who experience spinal cord trauma each year. "Our organization specializes in improving the lives of individuals after a spinal cord injury," said Vincenzo Piscopo, President & CEO, United Spinal Association. "We're looking forward to connecting with organizations like NMEDA and the local facilities to partner with us in bringing this information to the public." Upcoming stops of the 2021 tour include Phoenix, Los Angeles, Fort Worth and Washington, D.C. For Jessica and Julia Bonamassa, it’s a true opportunity for them to show how life-changing a wheelchair accessible vehicle can be for someone with a debilitating illness.

What NMEDA Members Had to Say Following the tour, we contacted participating NMEDA dealers to hear what they had to say about their local stop. We were met with positive feedback and dealers across the country willing to come back and participate again.
Connecting with everyone there and just letting people know what we do and how we can help is worth the time and effort spent. We enjoy seeing how people react when they don’t know about the technology that we provide and how useful it can be. Ken Witman GM, MobilityWorks in Cinnaminson, NJ
Any reason to get in front of OTs and PTs is a good reason. I appreciate the event and the opportunity, and hope they continue into the future. Scott Stowers GM, United Access in Scottsdale, AZ
I did love the opportunity to be a part of the tour and am open to doing more. I enjoy showing the innovation of technology that gives a person the ability to drive or their independence which is rewarding. In this business, it takes time to decide on a wheelchair accessible vehicle, but it is good to have the information when someone is ready. I enjoyed doing it. AROUND THE INDUSTRY New Make Inoperative Exemptions Finalized, Effective Immediately Several final rules relevant to the auto mobility industry and Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards were published in the March 15 Federal Register. These final rules amend NHTSA’s regulations regarding exemptions to the make inoperative prohibition to accommodate people with disabilities to include new exemptions relating to roof crush resistance, rear visibility, and air bags. NMEDA submitted commentary on all three proposals and is satisfied with the agency’s various decisions, all of which took years to finalize and are effective immediately. Another Successful Manufacturer Service School NMEDA proudly coordinated another well-attended Manufacturer Service School (MSS), held in the San Diego, California area in early March. ColleBuilt and MPS graciously opened up their doors and hosted the threeday education and training event. Training presentations were provided by ColleBuilt, Sure Grip, BraunAbility, MPS, Adapt Solutions, Q’STRAINT, and AMF Bruns. Technicians were provided with valuable information and hands-on experiences, as well as the opportunity to tour the facilities at MPS, ColleBuilt and the Aspex

The site documents include things like the insurance certificate, the scale and tool calibration certificates, and the QC manual. Tech training certificates are also required to be loaded for each technician (under the Administration/Accounts drop-down). The second section grade, “Job Info Grade,” shows how you’re doing on job data entry, or what we call the “customer file” data. And then, it was the next day believe it or not, I was on another call with William Doak over at Mobility America in Lakeland, Florida. Only about an hour or so north of our office in Tampa. William was another one of the lucky ones who not only knew Red and Becky, but also was one of the original authors and promotors of the QAP. That’s right—somehow my call took me right to one of the guys responsible for kicking off the whole QAP dealer program back in the late ’80s. The thing that made me feel so good was I could tell William was happy to see the new QAPx software and really appreciated how far QAP has come from its inception. I want to let William, and all of the many others in our association that have been a part of the creation of QAP,

When you look at where we started to where we are today, and especially with where we are headed with QAPx, it really is an amazing journey that I know (rest in peace) Red and Becky would have been proud of.
