VA Prompt Payment Meeting with Legislators NMEDA’s GR Team held a series of high-level meetings with legislators in Washington, DC, as we continue to address VA’s prompt payment failures. Following a breakfast event with Arizona Senator Mark Kelly, a U.S. Navy Captain who is deeply familiar with the inner workings of VA, we met with House VA Committee staff to discuss Congressional oversight of VA payment practices and strategies for addressing this persistent policy issue. The team also attended an event for VoteVets, a political action committee dedicated to electing former and current servicemembers to the House and Senate. More than a dozen legislators were present for the end-of-year holiday event, allowing us to connect with DOT Secretary Pete Buttigieg, Senator Tammy Duckworth, and Representatives Ruben Gallego and Seth Moulton. As we continue to discuss more permanent solutions with lawmakers, remember that NMEDA’s Past Due Invoice (PDI) Program is dedicated to securing payment for late (30+ days) VA invoices. (See more on page 24)
Back it Up Terry Gets a New Van NMEDA member, Superior Van & Mobility, helped Terry from the famous ‘Back it up Terry’ video get in a new WAV. According to a local Memphis news station, “ In March of 2023, Davis’ family created a new GoFundMe to raise money for a new van, stating that the van Davis had been using was ‘broken beyond the cost of repair.’ Over $80,000 was raised and over 4,000 donations were made in support of Davis.”

CALL ME MAYBE If you had a pulse in 2012, you likely remember Canadian pop sensation Carly Rae Jepsen’s hit single “Call Me Maybe.” Catchy and kitschy, the song exploded on YouTube and spent almost an entire year on the charts. Jepsen’s dizzying overnight success led many pop culture observers to assume that her first major contribution to the entertainment landscape would also be her last, and that she would inevitably join the likes of Stacey Q and Blu Cantrell on the list of legendary one-hit wonders.

I had always planned to shoehorn a CRJ reference into this article about NMEDA’s Government Relations (GR) activity in Canada – Celine Dion and Justin Bieber aren’t currently giving me much material to work with – but as my writing progressed, I began to draw some unexpected parallels between her internationally embraced debut single and subsequent success, and NMEDA’s U.S. legislative debut and similar upcoming GR efforts in Canada: seemingly

GOVERNMENT RELATIONS REPORT
Before detailing NMEDA’s effort to expand our support base in Canada, I’ll first share some relevant U.S. history: -
NMEDA was responsible for the passage of a U.S. law to improve the administration of the U.S. Department
of Veterans Affairs’ (VA) Auto Adaptive Equipment Program. The Veterans Mobility Safety Act (VMSA) – which was conceived of in 2014, introduced in 2015, and became law in 2016 – was a triumph for NMEDA, an industry association that was then-relatively unknown on Capitol Hill yet made an undeniable impression with its landmark debut effort. From a strained analogical standpoint, the VMSA is truly our “Call Me Maybe.” -
Defying one-hit wonder expectations, NMEDA subsequently passed another bill – The Veterans Auto &
Education Improvement Act (VAEIA) – that codified into law the increased frequency of the auto mobility industry’s single largest federal grant (VA’s $25,603.02 Auto Grant). Not unlike Jepsen’s 2015 album Emotion (which I encourage all readers to download, at minimum for the pop song perfection of “Run Away With Me”), the VAEIA established NMEDA as a credible GR force to be reckoned with. -
Meanwhile, since 2016, NMEDA has been collaborating with U.S. state-level funding sources – known as
“
Vocational Rehabilitation Agencies (VRA) – to produce a U.S. VRA landscape that includes QAP accreditation requirements across approximately 2/3 of the country.
While NMEDA’s nascent 2024 Canadian GR project is not a direct attempt to replicate our U.S. successes – I recognize the differences amongst our memberships and our governmental structures – it’s fair to say that our Canadian approach will mimic our U.S. approach as we strive to reinforce QAP’s position in the international policy landscape. What does this entail? First and foremost, NMEDA must listen to and comprehend the unique perspectives, challenges, and desires of its Canadian membership. To that end, I will be taking a series of trips to Canada throughout the first half of 2024 to personally visit with our dealer, industry/manufacturer, and allied health professional members throughout the country.
In fact, just this morning I received an official invitation to present at a January meeting of inter-departmental ministry officials in British Columbia, another significant event in our overall advancement of NMEDA’s funding and QAP adoption activities in Canada.”

NMEDA MANAGER OF COMMUNICATIONS & SOCIAL
As part of the strategic plan in 2023, NMEDA staff was tasked with redesigning the Circuit Breaker. The decision to redesign its magazine and rebrand it as “NMEDA NEWS” marks a significant and commendable step forward for the association. The redesign represents a commitment to staying current and relevant in the ever-evolving landscape of mobility solutions. With a fresh, modern look, the magazine is poised to capture the attention of members and industry stakeholders alike, providing a visually appealing and engaging platform for sharing crucial information. The new name reflects a more dynamic and inclusive approach, suggesting a focus not only on updates but also on the broader narrative of the mobility industry. This rebranding effort will enhance the association’s communication strategy, creating a stronger sense of community among members and fostering a deeper connection with the audience, so without any further ado, NMEDA is excited to introduce the new Auto Mobility Magazine, “NMEDA NEWS”.

NMEDA NEWS
NM EDA NE WS This edition of the NMEDA magazine carries a distinct theme, evident in the brand-new cover, updated name, and redesigned layout. The overarching themes of change and growth, consistently articulated in preceding articles, find a fitting culmination in this issue. Notably, this marks the debut of NMEDA NEWS, a transformative redesign of the Circuit Breaker. Beyond the pages of this magazine, NMEDA is embarking on a comprehensive revamp, extending to marketing materials, including the widely acclaimed and industry favorite Consumer Guide. These strategic changes reflect just a glimpse of NMEDA’s commitment to growth and enhancement in 2024. Recognizing that growth is inherently tied to change, NMEDA enthusiastically embraces this new chapter, positioning itself as a forward-thinking organization attuned to the evolving needs of its members. This proactive stance not only fosters organizational development but also augments NMEDA’s influence and positive impact within the dynamic mobility sector.

NMEDA NEWS (continued) Why NMEDA NEWS?
The NMEDA magazine has been called the Circuit Breaker for quite some time, longer than some of you have been in the industry. Changing something as well-known as this can be tricky, and as one can imagine quite a daunting task. A name change for a publication read by hundreds should not be decided upon by one individual. This name came from a list of over 50 options narrowed down and voted on by the Board of Directors, NMEDA staff, and several industry experts. This selection process highlights the dedication and collaborative input of our leadership in choosing a name that resonates with the NMEDA membership.
Read the Responses:
NMEDA's name alone resonates with and relates to the auto mobility industry.
If you get the publication, you know our organization, so I like that it's simple and literal.
NMEDA NEWS Clearly describes what it is and who it's from.
This is a self-explanatory name. It's simple and applies to all things related to the industry through the lens of NMEDA.
NMEDA NEWS is a name that is straightforward and undoubtedly about the automotive mobility industry that NMEDA represents. NMEDA members trust this magazine to be the number one source when it comes to industryrelated news and updates and now the name reinforces that idea. The name’s simplicity conveys a clear and direct message to readers – when they pick up this magazine, they can expect insightful content directly related to NMEDA and the auto mobility sector. For associations, the strategic ownership of publications and the trademarking of a name is a substantial undertaking. The selection of this new name establishes a definitive link to the organization, leaving no room

for confusion or misinterpretation. With the adoption of NMEDA NEWS, the association is set to trademark the name and truly own the title of its publication. Trademarking the name of the magazine. Trademarking a name is crucial for several reasons, primarily centered around protecting the distinct identity and reputation of the association. A trademark provides legal exclusivity, preventing others from using a similar name that could potentially cause confusion among members or other industry professionals. This exclusive right helps build brand recognition and trust, as individuals can confidently associate the trademarked name with NMEDA specifically. Ultimately, trademarking a name is a proactive measure

that safeguards the associations’ integrity, fosters member confidence, and establishes a unique and protected identity in the marketplace.
What about the Short Circuit?
With the curtains closing on the Circuit Breaker the NMEDA newsletter that you all eagerly await each Thursday also needed an update. It would be difficult to have the Short Circuit without the Circuit Breaker, so the Thursday newsletter will now be recognized as NMEDA NOW. Not only does this name connect back to the larger publication you are currently reading, but “NMEDA NOW” conveys a sense of immediacy, emphasizing the timeliness and relevance of the information presented. Being a more current form of communication. The “NOW” in the name emphasizes the urgency in which information is delivered. NMEDA members rely on the association to provide the most up-to-date information around the clock and the weekly newsletter is the most immediate way that happens. This name suggests a dynamic and up-tothe-minute source for updates, aligning perfectly with the fast-paced nature of the auto mobility industry. This update not only enhances clarity but also strengthens the association’s brand identity, making the newsletter name a powerful and fitting representation of its purpose and content. The new design for the publication directly reflects what the association has noticed demanded by the members. You may have seen an increase in images and graphics in a couple of the articles, this is due to the high level of interest that photos have received not only in the newsletter but across all social media accounts as well. There is a trend that is highlighted all across the board in communication and it’s that NMEDA members are drawn to photos. For this reason, the new design allows and promotes more images than before. Another aspect of the new design is the modern appeal. This is a direct result of
NMEDA taking feedback from members, and making an effort to produce content that more directly aligns with their interests. This rebranding initiative stands as a pivotal element within our comprehensive three-year strategic plan, embodying a deliberate and focused effort to reaffirm NMEDA’s dedication to being a member-centric organization. At the core of NMEDA is the unwavering commitment to placing our members at the forefront of every decision undertaken by the association. In alignment with this principle, NMEDA consistently prioritizes member feedback and anticipates their evolving needs, ensuring that our representation of the automotive mobility industry remains responsive and attuned to the dynamic preferences and expectations of our valued members. This strategic realignment not only reflects our commitment to excellence but also underscores our proactive approach to shaping a future that resonates with the diverse interests and aspirations of our membership base. In conclusion, NMEDA is excited to unveil a fresh and contemporary design along with the new name for its publication. This revamp marks a significant departure from the traditional aesthetics of the previous publication, infusing it with a modern and dynamic flair that resonates with the evolving landscape of the mobility industry. The brand-new name not only captures the essence of the association but also establishes a clear and direct connection between NMEDA and the magazine. This strategic alignment enhances brand visibility and reinforces the association’s commitment to staying at the forefront of innovation. The revitalized publication is not just a visual update; it is a strategic move to better communicate with the audience, providing them with a more engaging and relevant reading experience. NMEDA looks forward to the positive impact this revamp will have on its members and the broader community as they continue to serve and connect in the ever-changing mobility sector.

MANUFACTURER SERVICE SCHOOL Elevating your Training Experience with New Prerequisite!
WHAT ARE THE NEW PREREQUISITES, AND WHY ARE THEY NECESSARY? As a minimum, registrants must have completed Electrical Training Part I (ET-I) or complete the NMEDA Certified Technician (NCT) training modules. ET-I and NCT were developed to provide the foundational knowledge for automotive mobility technicians. ET-I provides an overview of electrical applications and concepts that are universally applicable across the industry. The NCT course covers the basic knowledge for an automotive technician. Either of these prerequisites act as a launchpad for deeper engagement and a more profound understanding of the training material during MSS.
WHY THE CHANGE? We believe that growth begins with a strong foundation. MSS trainers were interested in elevating the knowledge of technicians, specifically in preparation for the hands-on training component, that is a key aspect of NMEDA’s manufacturer service schools. Requiring the completion of either ET-I or NCT prior to attending MSS helps to ensure that every participant is equipped with the core knowledge needed to participate.

NMEDA NEWS
FAQS:
Your Burning Questions Answered I'VE ALREADY TAKEN THE COURSES IN THE PAST; DO I MEET THE PREREQUISITES? Absolutely! Past completion of either course fulfills the requirement, even if more than two years have passed.
HOW DO I ACCESS THE PREREQUISITES, AND ARE THEY TIME-CONSUMING? Accessing the prerequisites is simple. Log in to NMEDA’s member portal and register for the desired course. ET-I takes about two to three hours to complete. NCT may take up to six hours and is a highly regarded certification demonstrating technical competency in the automotive mobility industry. Either course can be taken at any time, and on almost any device.
WHAT IF I NEED MORE TIME TO COMPLETE THE TRAINING? We understand that everyone learns at their own pace. You can save and return to the online training module as many times as you need. The link is valid for 60 days. However, you must complete the training within 1-week of the MSS event. NMEDA staff will contact you to verify your completion of the prerequisite and that your MSS registration is confirmed. If the MSS is close to capacity, you will be alerted. Registration priority will be given to those who complete the prerequisites over those who have not.
CAN I STILL REGISTER FOR MSS IF I HAVEN'T COMPLETED THE PREREQUISITES? To provide the best learning experience for all participants, completion of the prerequisite training is required. If you have not completed either ET-I or NCT, you will be waitlisted until the course is completed. Failure to complete the prerequisites within one week of the MSS event will result in cancelled registration.
WHAT IF I HAVE QUESTIONS ABOUT MY TRAINING RECORDS Contact NMEDA. We can easily verify your past training records, certificates, completion of course work and answer any other questions that you may have.

Anyone who knows me or knows another quality geek like me (sorry for you) knows that our brain runs on data, and lots of it, so I went looking and what I found was our data was fragmented and honestly, in its current state, useless. What I mean by that was everything, for the most part, was recorded on paper. Paper forms everywhere and little or nothing is input into a computer let alone a database. There were some that used excel sheets to capture data and that’s great, it’s what I would have done, but still the data was not being put into any central warehouse of any kind.
