GEN-XR
PNP-70
The GEN-XR is our easiest to install reduced steering system. The GEN-XR allows for 0-100%, and anywhere in between, reduction to the steering. The steering effort can easily be adjusted on the fly by the dealer and locked in. The GEN-XR is a plug n play installation on the Toyota Sienna and Chrysler Pacifica only needing 3 wires to be soldered (ignition and CAN).
The Plug N Play 70 offers 70 functions for the Pacifica with a simple box that plugs into the OBD-II. The functions are controlled via a tablet. An option is available for Toyota but is not fully plug n play and thus requires tapping a few wires.

seems to be a need again for OEM engineering liaison, especially for alterers, and especially for crash test information that is normally proprietary. This is why, right after the last article on this subject, CRP and NMEDA staff took up a concerted effort in approaching the mainstream OEMs, starting with one of the largest ones, on behalf of NMEDA alterers.
NMEDA with this pseudo-proprietary information is that the OEM deal directly with NMEDA who in turn can pass the information on to the adaptive vehicle alterer. Experience is the Greatest Teacher Q&A with Nick Gutwein NMEDA Conference General Session Speaker
By Katie McDonald NMEDA DIRECTOR OF COMMUNICATIONS & SOCIAL Nick Gutwein is far from a stranger to those in the auto mobility industry, likely needing no introduction at all for most of our NMEDA members, so I’ll keep this one brief. Nick currently serves as Chairman of the Board of BruanAbility. Prior to his chairmanship, he led the company as its CEO for nine years, from 2008 to 2017. When Nick stepped away from his CEO role, he did so to pursue a very different calling—one in the ministry. Nick will be joining us at the 2021 NMEDA Annual Conference as our Day 2 General Session Speaker. During his session,“Leadership Lessons Learned,” Nick will share his thoughts about leadership and the vastly different challenges he has faced over the years.

Supply chains in nearly every industry have been impacted by the collateral effect of the pandemic and we are of course no exception. I think the impact in auto mobility will worsen in the short term as inventory in the dealer channel gets squeezed resulting from the current lack of cars available for conversion by WAV manufacturers. As we begin to shed our pandemic cocoons, take stock of the major life events of this past year—motherhood (Mikala and Katie!), shepherding an organization through unprecedented circumstances (Danny!), becoming deeply involved in a pyramid scheme (Me??)—and prepare ourselves for societal reintegration, I have been seeking guidance and instruction from the plethora of podcasters who selfidentify as guiders and instructors. After subscribing and listening to dozens of podcasts offering advice on matters ranging from the serious (“I’m terrified of failure!”) to the silly (“How can I avoid summer salad mistakes?”) to the seriously silly (“My boyfriend

While I have traditionally valued a collaborative approach to NMEDA’s Government Relations (GR) Committee activities, I was interested in revamping the Committee’s processes and procedures to ensure that we continue to address the ongoing, as well as the TBD pandemic-related, issues facing NMEDA members. Fortunately for me (and perhaps unfortunately for the rent-a-kitten stores and for-
hire aerialists that will likely not be involved in any GR Committee-related activities this year), extending my pandemic-era reliance on personal advice to the professional realm was a straightforward task: I have at my disposal a GR Committee that is stacked with individuals whose advice has been as insightful as On Being, as informative as My Brother, My Brother & Me, and as no-nonsense as Ask Ronna with Ronna (& Bryan). My advice consultations began with this year’s new GR Committee Chair, Mike Savicki. Channeling the incomparable Esther Perel, I asked Mike (who does not have a podcast but is an excellent podcast guest), “Where should we begin?”… “As Amy and I began discussing the Committee refresh, I felt it was important that we establish a statement of purpose and introduce some annual goals for a few reasons: to give Committee members more focus in their activities, to help keep volunteers motivated and engaged, and to allow all of NMEDA to see that this Committee’s work is a collective two-way street made stronger by

GUEST FEATURE
Q&A With Roy Spence by Katie McDonald NMEDA DIRECTOR OF COMMUNICATIONS & SOCIAL Roy Spence is a co-founder of GSD&M, a global marketing agency known for it’s work with the world’s top brands including Walmart, John Deere, Southwest Airlines and many others. Roy’s mantra “Don’t Do Mild” summarizes his secret to success: doing things passionately and purposefully. Roy will be the Closing General Session speaker at the 2021 NMEDA Annual Conference. He was kind enough to have a quick chat with me to provide a sneak peek on what you can expect from his session, “The Power of Purpose.”
1. NMEDA is thrilled to have you speaking at the 2021 NMEDA Annual Conference this September in Columbus, OH. I understand you have a personal connection to the auto mobility industry. Can you share that connection with our members? My older sister, Susan Spence, was born in the mid 1940s with Spina bifida—a birth defect that causes all the nerves that are supposed to go into your legs to boil up in an open wound in the bottom of your spine. Susan was supposed to die in the hospital, but my Mom and Grandad took her home and because of my Mom she lived to be 49 years old. Unprecedented in that time. I pushed Susan to school every day and back home for 7 years and she graduated from high school. As a family, we all became so grateful for our mobility and to this day none of us take it for granted because of my precious sister, Susan Spence.
2. Our members believe we help restore purpose for our customers by helping them
regain their independence through auto motive mobility. Your session at conference is title “The Power of Purpose,” what can attendees expect to leave with after attending your session? From my sister Susan (and I did not know it at the time), I found my Purpose early in life. Aristotle said it the best, “Where the needs of the world and your talents cross, there lies your vocation/purpose.” My goal is to first of all say thank you to all the men and women who wake up everyday with a mighty purpose of helping people everywhere be able to gain, maybe for the first time, a real and tangible sense of independence through automobility. Most people have a job—you all have a calling.
3. You’ve been a part of some very well-known campaigns, such as “Don’t mess with Texas,” and some national PSAs following the tragic events of 9/11, Hurricane Katrina, and others. Do you have a favorite campaign? One you’re most proud of? That’s a hard one because from Don’t Mess with Texas to 9/11 and all the pro bono PSA work we did with so many of the former presidents when tragedy happened here and around the world, there was a moment of humility and yes, awe that we had the will and follow-through to do
NMEDA Conference General Session Speaker
whatever it took to make a difference on a fairly large scale. My answer is ALL of them because it embedded in me and my team the Power of Purpose to use marketing as a force for good.
4. I understand you sign your letters/emails with “Ride at Dawn.” What is the meaning behind this unique sign-off? Early in life, for whatever reason, I was blessed with an authentic and challenging inner calling. Yes, I wake up early (always) but as I continued on my journey of using marketing as a force for good, I kept realizing that the age old idea of “don’t wait for the world to come to you—good times or bad—get up with the attitude and the thought of: “I wonder what the world has in store for me today? I think I will go find out.”…Ride at Dawn.
5. Anything else you’d like to share with our members? George Bernard Shaw Quote…and the members of this remarkable industry live it every day. “This is the true joy in life, being used for a purpose recognized by yourself as a mighty one.” ---

AROUND THE INDUSTRY AUTO Act for Veterans The House Veterans Affairs Committee held a legislative hearing in April to consider 16 proposals, including the AUTO for Veterans Act. The bill authorizes the Department of Veterans Affairs to provide an auto grant to service-disabled veterans once every ten years (as opposed to the current “once in a lifetime” nature of the grant). The House also considered additional language authorizing a “mini” (25%) auto grant as well as an operational AAE allowance for non-serviceconnected veterans. VMI Launches First All-Wheel-Drive Wheelchair Accessible Minivan Vantage Mobility International (VMI) recently launched the first-ever all-wheel drive wheelchair accessible minivan. Built on the 2021 Toyota Sienna Hybrid chassis, this new conversion features a unique patented wheel well cover design that more closely resembles an unconverted vehicle. According to the press release, this design feature is in response to customer feedback and reduces the gap commonly seen with wheelchair vans and creates a sleek OEM look while improving the aerodynamics.

BraunAbility & Q’STRAINT Announce Transformative Mobility Venture BraunAbility and Q’STRAINT announced a new venture to accelerate innovation in the auto mobility industry. According to the press release, one significant opportunity of the venture will be greater integration of the design process with significant potential for enhanced safety, quality, and reliability for the disability community. “Wheelchair passengers face such a segmented experience when they travel,” said Patrick Girardin, co-president of Q’STRAINT. “We see huge opportunities for integrating technologies and creating a new story, rewritten for inclusion. Together, we help ensure that new products create a more intuitive and effortless experience for our customers.” “The shift to these new technologies has the potential to change a remarkable number of lives if they are designed for inclusion,” said Staci Kroon, global president and chief executive officer of BraunAbility. “To keep pace with this historic change, our industry must combine research and development investments and other resources, so wheelchair users are included in the future of mobility.”

planned in the world of QAP. First off, I hope you are doing well and have weathered your way (personally and business-wise) through the pandemic. It looks like we are close to putting this behind us and by the time this article comes out, we will be on the verge of having our first in-person conference since March 2020. It seems like such a long time ago…I really hope you can make it to Columbus. So many things have been happening lately with QAP. In this article we will talk about the status of the new QAPx software application and rollout, a recently revised Make Inoperative form for US dealers, the re-launch of on-site QAP audits, and updates to our website including web-versions of the QAP Rules and Guidelines, and lastly, the new CRP Conversion Posting Detail tables. Let’s get rolling!
QAPx Beta Testing and Rollout
our beta testing in June. At the conclusion of the testing, we compiled all the comments and suggestions from the beta testers, and there were a few improvements to the software that needed to be made. The training materials also needed to be updated. As I am writing this article, all the finishing touches are being completed for the software and training materials. We had to delay the originally planned rollout date to make sure we get everything right and provide the best experience we can for the user. The rollout will continue until all dealers are on-boarded and trained on QAPx and we expect that to be completed by the end of the year. So, if you have not completed on-boarding or been notified to sign up, go to your member portal and get your location signed up. Note that QAPx is not required for existing Docutrack users.
Revised Make Inoperative Form One of the things we encountered during the QAPx beta testing was some errors completing the Make Inoperative form. The make inoperative form is required anytime a vehicle modification makes inoperative one of the promulgated federal safety standards, also commonly referred to as FMVSS. Note that the make inoperative only applies to dealers in the US and is not applicable in Canada. What we were finding is that the form was being completed when it was not required to be completed. Also, we found sections of the form were not being checked when they should have been checked and in some cases no exemptions at all were checked. We were asked by the dealers if we could use the make inoperative with bullets form in place of the standard make inoperative form (without bullets). The form with bullets helps the dealers make the right decision on what exemption should be checked as
QAPx is the new software application that dealers use to administer QAP. If you want to learn more about what QAPx is and how it benefits you, please read my article from last Circuit Breaker where I go through everything there is to know about QAPx. Check Your Inboxes: Dues Renewals to Arrive Electronically As you are well aware, late last year NMEDA implemented a brand new Association Management System (AMS), more commonly known to you, our members, as the Member Portal. One goal of implementing this new system was to provide an upgraded and more “self-service” platform for our members—taking many of our processes from pen and paper into the digital world! One such upgraded process is our membership dues renewals. Members will now receive their renewal notice and invoice via email to the billing address we have on file. This new process will allow you to conveniently and easily pay your dues online. This new process will kick off for September 2021 renewals. As we ease into this new process you can expect to hear from Mikala Ballard, NMEDA Membership & Administration Coordinator, giving you a heads up about a week prior to renewals to ensure you don’t miss this important notice. If you have any questions, contact Mikala Ballard at info@nmeda.org.

An estimated 25.5 million Americans experience a travel-limiting disability, there is an increasing need for accessible and enabling personal transportation. The transportation industry is in the middle of one of its largest transformations, with unprecedented investment and advancements in electric and autonomous vehicle (AV) technologies. Since 2009, the vast majority of the $14 billion invested in AV technology has been spent in pursuit of mass market driverless cars. The strategy has served her well especially as a paraplegic following her spinal cord injury resulting from a competitive bicycle training collision with a car in September 2000. She has worn the red, white, and blue for Team USA in adaptive rowing and, of late, is the country’s top female Paralympic air pistol competitor having represented Team USA at the 2016 Rio Paralympic Games. Tricia is also a straight shooting voice of reason when it comes to disability and the place of the disabled in society. That’s what we spent most of our time discussing when we connected for this article. “You caught me on a day I’m all fired up,” Tricia Downing, 52, of

Case and point? Ever hear of being “house poor?” Downing describes what it’s like for the disabled to be “car poor.” “When I was first injured, I drove my Subaru Outback to well over two hundred thousand miles. When it came time to trade, the dealer suggested I simply lease so I drove home with smaller payments and just the additional cost of hand controls,” she says. “Almost any able bodied person can lease a car for almost nothing, right? But take a van with a ramp and not only can you not easily lease, you are instead paying three and four times as much per month just because you are disabled. “This is a hot button with me,” she continues, “because I really try to be a contributing member of society, I
have a job and try to live a normal life but, because of the things that come with having a disability, like the need for adaptive vehicles and vans, we can never get ahead, it’s like we are just getting by, and that’s wrong.” “There should be some sort of simple leasing program for vehicles with ramps,” she adds. “If I, or someone, could lease a van with a ramp it would
