COMMUNICATIONS CHIEF US TARGETS VENEZUELAN SCARAMUCCI IS OUT PRESIDENT FOR SANCTIONS

1

Donald Trump fired Anthony Scaramucci, over an obscene tirade, just over a week after naming him to the job, sources familiar with the decision said, in the latest staff upheaval to hit the Republican’s administration. Scaramucci’s departure follows one of the rockiest weeks of Trump’s presidency in which a major Republican effort to overhaul the U.S. healthcare system failed in Congress and both his spokesman

and previous chief of staff left their jobs as White House infighting burst into the open. Scaramucci was damaged by comments he made to The New Yorker last week in which he attacked then-White House chief of staff Reince Priebus and Trump’s chief strategist, Steve Bannon, in profanity-laden terms. Los Angeles was chosen to host the 2028 Summer Olympics in a deal that virtually assures that the 2024 Summer Games will be held in the rival candidate city of Paris, Olympic officials announced. Both cities were competing for the 2024 Games after several other candidates withdrew from contention, and the stage was set for Paris to win its bid when the International Olympic Committee

(IOC) confirmed that Los Angeles had agreed to the later date of 2028. “The IOC welcomes this decision of the Los Angeles Olympic and Paralympic Candidature Committee, and we are pleased to release the Host City contract 2028 in a transparent and timely manner,” said IOC President Thomas Bach in a statement.

The U.S. government slapped sanctions on Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro on Monday, the Trump’s administration’s toughest move so far against his government in response to Sunday’s election of a legislative superbody Washington denounced as a “sham” vote. No oil-related measures were included in the announcement, but such measures remain under consideration, according

to congressional sources and a person familiar with the White House’s deliberations on the matter. Under the sanctions, all of Maduro’s assets subject to U.S. jurisdiction were frozen, and Americans are barred from doing business with him, the U.S. Treasury Department’s Office of Foreign Assets Control said.

LYFT APPOINTS FORMER OBAMA ADVISER TO BOARD

Ride-hailing company Lyft Inc. said on Monday it appointed Valerie Jarrett, an adviser to former President Barack Obama, to its board Jarrett, 60, served in several roles during Obama’s eight-year administration. Most recently she was senior adviser to Obama and an assistant to the former president for public engagement and intergovernmental affairs. Jarrett has also worked

as Chicago’s commissioner of planning and development and held the chair of the city’s transit board. The appointment comes at a time when Lyft, co-founded by Logan Green and John Zimmer, is vying for a bigger share of the U.S. ride-hailing market, which is dominated by Uber Technologies Inc.

Scaramucci leaves role as White House communications director

Anthony Scaramucci is the third White House official to depart his post in recent weeks. ERIN TIERNAN @ErinTiernan

erin.tiernan@metro.us

President Donald Trump reportedly decided to boot Anthony Scaramucci from his role as White House communications director after just 11 days on the job. The news came days after the ex-Wall Street financier gave a cursefilled interview to the New Yorker in which he railed against other senior White House officials. Three unnamed sources described as “close to the decisionâ€? confirmed Trump’s decision to remove Scaramucci from the job Monday, The New York Times reported. Scaramucci is the third high-level staffer

to resign or be removed from office — former Press Secretary Sean Spicer resigned July 21 and ex-Chief of Staff Reince Priebus resigned Friday. The latest White House shakeup ousting Scaramucci reportedly came at the request of Gen. John Kelly, the Trump administration’s former secretary of homeland security who was named the chief of staff following Priebus’ departure July 28. Kelly, who was sworn into his new chief of staff position on Monday, has been recognized for his organized and disciplined management style. It’s unclear whether Scaramucci will stay on with the administration in a different capacity, or if he will be dismissed entirely from any White House role, but Scaramucci’s short tenure has been marred by sensational stories. The multimillionaire businessman’s wife of

three years, Deidre Ball, filed for divorce three weeks ago as she was nine months pregnant with the couple’s second child. Scaramucci’s “naked political ambition

to work for Trump in the White House was reportedly a factor in Ball’s decision to file for divorce. In a profanity-laced interview published Thursday by The New

Yorker, Scaramucci demanded a reporter reveal his White House sources and threatened to fire the entire White House communications department. He also

called Priebus a “f—king paranoid schizophrenic, as he embarked on a seemingly paranoid rant of his own that White House staffers were “plotting against him.

The Massachusetts Appeals Court ruled on Monday that the MBTA did not break any contract with riders when commuter rail trains were canceled and delayed during the 2015 winter. The lawsuit, filed by commuter-rail rider Raquel Rodriguez, alleged the service disruptions along the commuter rail during the disastrous winter breached an “implied contract” the transit authority had with monthly pass holders “to provide timely, reliable commuter-rail service.”

The court did acknowledge that the record-breaking blizzards during that winter “wreaked havoc in and around Boston” and that commuters were “frustrated” by the MBTA’s cancellations and delays. Rodriguez alleged that by paying for a monthly pass, the MBTA was contracted to provide “timely, reliable” commuter rail service. It then broke that obligation with repeated delays and cancellations and by changing to a “win-

ter recovery schedule.” That schedule, according to Rodriguez, was “so sparse that it extended the unreliable and untimely service through March of 2015.” However, simply buying a monthly pass — for which Rodriguez paid $182 — does not guarantee specific service, especially in the extreme weather, the court ruled. “Even the MBTA acknowledged the inconvenience caused by its failure,” the court wrote

in its decision. “However, the purchase of a monthly pass on the MBTA is not a guarantee of performance according to its published schedule in these extraordinary circumstances.” Rodriguez’s claim relied on a case from 1867 in which a man sued after the Eastern Railroad after the train was delayed nearly two hours to accommodate passengers who wanted to return to Boston later than the scheduled time. That man did not receive “reasonable notice of the change,” but the court ruled that commuter-rail riders did receive notice of schedule changes in 2015, because the MBTA published a new scheduled when transit times were altered due to winter storms. This ruling in Raquel Rodriguez v. Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority upheld a lower court’s decision to dismiss the case.

Traffic was not as bad as feared on first morning of Comm Ave Bridge project The first Monday morning rush hour since the start of the Commonwealth Avenue Bridge project did see some congestion, but it was less less traffic than expected, MassDOT Acting Highway Administrator Jonathan Gulliver said. On Monday morning, the capacity of the Massachusetts Turnpike was essentially cut in half, Gulliver said, and it did cause some delays. On the eastbound side of the Mass Pike, traffic was backed up to West Newton and on the westbound side, drivers hit delays starting at Logan Airport. Still, traffic could have been worse. Officials are hoping that they don’t see an increase in delays on Tuesday, though they said they won’t be sure of the traffic toll until tomorrow. “I want to reiterate that if you have to come in, plan your trip ahead of time, give yourself plenty of extra time and use whatever tools are available to you:

Waze, Mass511,” Gulliver said at a press conference near the bridge Monday morning. “Make sure you understand well in advance what you could be up against.” If commuters do not reroute their trip or take heed to avoid the area, the construction could add 90 minutes to a driver’s commute, Gulliver said, according to WBZ. As of Monday morning, it seemed that at least some drivers were taking his advice to find an alternate way to work. Or, Gulliver hopes, changing their schedules so that they don’t need to go to work this week. “I hope that a lot of people chose to take

this as a vacation week,” he said at the press conference. “It’s a great week to do it, there’s great weather.” Gulliver noted again that this project is using accelerated construction techniques, which enables workers to complete the repairs on the bridge in about a six week period, with three weeks of construction this summer and another three weeks next year. “It’s going to cause a lot of agony on the everyday commuter, but it allows us to get out of here quickly,” he said. The first phase of the project is expected to be completed Aug. 14. So far, Gulliver said, everything is going according to schedule. KRISTIN TOUSSAINT

The chef and owner of Boston-area hotspots Tremont 647 and The Smoke Shop is set to compete in the “Chopped Grill Masters tournament, with the winner receiving $50,000 and a trip to Napa Valley. Husbands will throw down against culinary stars Megan Day, Laura Frazee and Craig Verhage in the first round of the competition, which airs tonight at 10 p.m. The Bay State barbecue king, who previously competed on Gordon Ramsay’s “Hell’s Kitchen, tells us he had a blast practicing and filming for “Chopped. “We had a fun and challenging time practicing, Husbands says. “The actually taping of it was wild. Red Sox, Yankees raise the stakes The Red Sox landed a top reliever while the Yanks grabbed an elite starter. MATT BURKE @burke_metro

matthew.burke@metro.us

Despite their recent slump, the Red Sox are going all in on 2017 as they acquired reliever Addison Reed from the New York Mets on MLB trade deadline day Monday. The deal comes on the heels of Dave Dombrowski landing third baseman Eduardo Nunez in a deal with the San Francisco Giants last week. The Red Sox will send right-handed pitching prospect Jamie Callahan, right-handed pitching prospect Stephen Nogosek, and right-handed pitching prospect Gerson Bautista to the Mets. The 28-year-old Reed will be the set-up man to Sox closer Craig Kimbrel, and instantly gives the Sox bullpen a needed jolt. Reed had 19 saves on the season for the Mets. It is very much a rental move for the Red Sox as Reed will be a free agent after the season. Reed was a lights-out closer with the White Sox and Diamondbacks earlier in his career. In 2013 he had 40 saves for the White Sox and

Addison Reed, the newest member of the Red Sox, has 19 saves so far this season and will add to the Boston bullpen. GETTY IMAGES

in 2014 he registered 32 saves with Arizona. Reed, Kimbrel, Matt Barnes and Heath Hembree will be John Farrell’s top bullpen options for the rest of the season.

Rugged competition The Red Sox boosted their roster and filled legit needs with the additions of Nunez and Reed, but their chief rival in the American League East

also got significantly better. The Yankees reeled in one of the biggest fish on the trade market Monday, trading three prospects in exchange for Oakland starting pitcher Sonny Gray. Gray is 6-5 this season with a 3.43 ERA and immediately gives the Yankees a starting rotation that rivals the Red Sox. With Luis Severino, CC Sabathia and Masahiro Tanaka, the Yankees already had

The rich get richer If the Red Sox do somehow manage to get to the 2017 World Series, the National League team waiting for them will likely be the juggernaut Los Angeles Dodgers. The Dodgers, who already own the best record in MLB at 74-31, acquired righty Yu Darvish from the Rangers on deadline day. Darvish (6-9, 4.01 ERA), a four-time All-Star, gives the Dodgers insurance if Clayton Kershaw can’t return to full strength from his injured back. The Houston Astros, who the Red Sox could very well meet in the playoffs, landed lefty starter Francisco Liriano from the Blue Jays on Monday. Liriano is 6-5 with a 5.88 ERA this season.

a pitching staff with a top 10 ERA in baseball. In the past few days, they added Gray and former Braves pitcher Jaime Garcia (5-7, 4.29 ERA). “I expected it,” Red Sox boss Dave Dombrowski said of the Yankees’ moves. “They made their club significantly better. It didn’t surprise me at all. It was out there for an extended period that they were looking to do those things.”

Fantasy football: The top-five Patriots heading into 2017 Another year, another big season expected for the defending Super Bowl-champion New England Patriots. With what seems like an embarrassment of riches, fantasy football owners will be keen on snatching a few Pats for their team on their quest for a fantasy crown. Here are the topfive Patriots you should draft this upcoming season: 1. Brandin Cooks, WR Whenever Tom Brady is throwing you the ball, good things are bound to happen. For wide receiver Brandin Cooks, it’s no different despite coming over from one of the most

potent passing offenses in football with the Saints and Drew Brees. However, the speedy downfield threat is going to offer Brady the big-play option and offer a change of pace from Julian Edelman and Danny Amendola. Given the amount of options Brady will have to throw to, Cooks’ numbers might be inconsistent, but his raw skill set is too much to pass on in a Brady-led offense. 2. Tom Brady, QB I’m not necessarily sure what I can write about Tom Brady that hasn’t been said before. I mean, if you don’t want him, then maybe you should just delete

Brandin Cooks has looked unstoppable in Patriots training camp. GETTY IMAGES

3. Rob Gronkowski, TE Gronk’s back is all healed up, he has a clean bill of health and has no limits on playing time. As Brady’s ultimate safety blanket and one of the most dominant pass catchers in football, Gronkowski is a top-20 option in any draft that can put up wide receiver numbers. Obviously, the only reservations fantasy owners might have is his ability to stay on the field given his injury history, which could hurt his draft stock.

probably take a chance on him in the fourth round of my fantasy draft.

4. Julian Edelman, WR Julian Edelman is Brady’s best friend. Seriously, it’s

your team and log off the computer for a while. He could play until he’s 57 and I’d still

a bromance. The receiver’s ability to work within the slot has benefitted Brady so much over the years and fantasy owners too, especially those in PPR leagues. 5. Mike Gillislee, RB Surprising to see Mike Gillislee on this list, right?Well, the fact of the matter is that he will likely be the Patriots’ go-to back come the fall after the departure of LeGarrette Blount. While he’s only appeared in 23 games since 2013, Gillislee has averaged 5.6 yards per carry over his career. If he gets a regular workload, you’re looking at a 1,000-yard rusher. JOE PANTORNO
