Civil rights groups slammed the Trump administration over a U.S. Justice Department plan to probe whether colleges’ racial-preference admissions programs discriminate against white and Asian-American applicants. First reported by The New York Times, the proposal has met resistance among career lawyers within the department, which has

The website, supported by the German Marshall Fund, displays a “near real-time” analysis of English-language tweets from a pool of 600 Twitter accounts that analysts identified as users that spread Russian propaganda. Former FBI Director James Comey, who was fired by U.S. President Donald Trump, has signed a deal for a book on leadership and decision-making that will come out in spring 2018, the publisher said on Wednesday. The book deal with Macmillan’s Flatiron Books comes three months after Comey’s firing raised questions about whether Trump tried to interfere with the Federal

Bureau of Investigation’s probe into Russia’s alleged meddling with the U.S. presidential election. Russia denies any interference, and Trump has denied collusion with Russia and interfering with the investigation.

Police bust $7.8M ‘Dragon’ heroin operation An investigation focusing on a 40-year-old Philadelphia man has led to the arrests of 16 people statewide. HAYDEN MITMAN @MetroPhilly letters@metro.us

Pennsylvania Attorney General Josh Shapiro announced this week that a statewide investigation of a Philadelphia man has led to the arrests of 16 suspected drug dealers and the confiscation of more than $7.8 million in heroin and $1.9 million in cocaine. Law enforcement officials announced Monday that the investigation

focused on Damon “Fat Cat” Devine, 40, of N. 60th Street in Philadelphia and bags of heroin labeled “Dragon” that, police said, Devine’s criminal operation sold and transported throughout the state. “This investigation involved dealers who transported large amounts of heroin and cocaine from Philadelphia to Altoona and Johnstown,” Shapiro

said in a statement. “Our work with [Blair County] District Attorney [Rich] Consiglio and other state and local law enforcement agencies led to the dismantling of a major drug pipeline into Blair and Cambria counties. We will remain merciless with the dealers peddling these poisons in our communities.” Police said that the

investigation included officials from the Office of the Attorney General, the district attorneys of Blair, Cambria and Montgomery counties, Altoona and Johnstown police, Pennsylvania State Police, and the Blair and Cambria County Drug Task Forces. The investigation into Devine’s alleged criminal empire began back in August 2016 when, police said, Devine was a passenger in a vehicle that crashed after a Pennsylvania state trooper attempted to pull it over for traffic violations. After a chase from Philadelphia to Montgomery County, law enforcement officials said the vehicle crashed and police discovered 3,750 heroin baggies stamped “Dragon” and 127 grams of cocaine in the vehicle. Devine was arrested, at that time, but police said, nine days later, Devine posted bail and continued to operate his alleged drug organization. After making several “controlled buys” from individuals that, police said, were members of Devine’s alleged criminal organization in February outside an Altoona motel,

Devine was arrested with 651 bags of “Dragon” heroin in his possession. In total, law enforcement officials say that they seized 14,890 bags of heroin with an estimated street value of nearly $150,000 during their probe, in addition to nearly half a pound of cocaine. In addition to ring leader Devine, police arrested 15 others, all charged with possession with intent to distribute, conspiracy and related charges. Based on the investigation and testimony in front of the grand jury, law enforcement officials believe that Devine’s alleged criminal organization sold $7.8 million in heroin and $1.9 million in cocaine and crack cocaine over 13 months from January 2016 to February 2017. “These arrests will go a long way in slowing down the availability of cocaine and heroin in Blair and Cambria counties,” said Consiglio, in a statement. “This is another example of law enforcement reaching higher in the food chain to cut off the supply of poison to our communities.”

“These arrests will go a long way in slowing down the availability of cocaine and heroin in Blair and Cambria counties.” Rich Consiglio

The District Attorney’s Office in Montgomery County and law enforcement officials in East Norriton and West Norriton are searching for a suspected armed assailant after a woman told police she was sexually assaulted at gunpoint as she jogged through Norristown Farm Park on Tuesday morning. According to law enforcement officials, a 19-year-old woman told police that, at about 10:50 a.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 1, as she jogged through Norristown Farm Park, along W. Germantown Pike and

N. Whitehall Road in East Norriton Township, she was approached by an armed black male wearing a black mask and/or a dark-colored hooded sweatshirt. After the incident, the woman called 911, police said, saying that she had been sexually assaulted at gunpoint. Officers with the East Norriton Police, West Norriton Police and Montgomery County Detectives arrived on the scene, police said, and the woman was transported to Einstein Medical Center for treatment. Law enforcement officials are asking anyone who might have seen a person matching the description of the suspected assailant entering or leaving the park on Tuesday to contact East Norriton Police at 610-272-0748, the West Norriton Police at 610-630-1701 or the Montgomery County Detectives at 610-278-3368.

PA TRAIN DERAILMENT Freight train derails, sparks fire in Pennsylvania; residents flee A CSX Corp. freight train carrying flammable materials derailed as it moved through a southern Pennsylvania town on Wednesday, striking a residential garage that caught fire, forcing more than 100 residents from their homes, authorities said. No injuries were reported after the crash in Hyndman, about 100 miles southeast of Pittsburgh, but CSX warned customers service disruptions would last for a week over a nearly 80-mile stretch between Connellsville and Cumberland, Maryland. At least six cars derailed as the train was passing through the town of fewer than 1,000 residents just before 5 a.m., said Harry Corley, an emergency management coordinator in Bedford County. A freight car skidded into a garage that caught fire

and train cars were still burning several hours later, he said. More than a dozen fire crews have responded from different areas of Pennsylvania and Maryland, Corley said. He said authorities ordered the evacuation of residents in a 1-mile radius, encompassing most of the town. Local news footage showed train cars snaking across the ground in flames behind a house and a leveled garage. CSX said 32 cars derailed. At least one contained liquefied petroleum gas and another contained molten sulfur, which leaked and was on fire. This was the third derailment for a CSX train since last November. It came two days after CSX Corp. CEO Hunter Harrison apologized to customers for service disruptions and said some railroad employees were resisting planned cost-cutting measures. REUTERS

Homeless man sought in murder of Philadelphia street musician Police say the 35-year-old musician was murdered in fight over $20. HAYDEN MITMAN @MetroPhilly letters@metro.us

Law enforcement officials in Montgomery County have announced a suspect in this past weekend’s murder of a 35-year-old Philadelphia area musician, who was playing guitar on the street when he was killed in a fight over $20. According to Montgomery County District Attorney Kevin R. Steele and Pottstown Borough Police Chief F. Richard Drumheller, an arrest warrant has been issued for Steven Holmes, 54, with no listed address, for the Sunday, July 30, homicide of Diamonde Stone in Pottstown. According to court documents, Stone had been playing guitar on the 300 block of High Street in Pottstown, before he and Holmes got into an argument over $20. Court documents note that on Sunday at about 10:30 p.m., a witness told police that they saw a white male and a black male fighting in the street, with two other people trying to break them up. As the men were be-

ing pulled apart, the black male was on top of the white male on the ground, witnesses told police in court documents, that the white male flashed “something shiny in his hand” and struck the black male — known to be Stone — in the chest. Court documents said Stone stepped back, walked across the street, held onto a wall and collapsed. He would later be pronounced dead at Pottstown Memorial Hospital. The Montgomery County Coroner’s Office found that Stone had died of a stab wound to the chest. According to court documents, an investigation discovered that shortly after the stabbing, a woman who witnessed the fight told her friend — who’s apartment Holmes had been staying at — that “Steve just stomped Klutch.” “Klutch” was a nickname of Stone’s — in fact, he called himself “Klutch” on social media and had recorded music under his own “Klutch22” entertainment company. While he hadn’t posted new music in four years, Stone recorded himself performing for his own YouTube page as well. Stone was arrested in Phoenixville and charged with robbery back in November 2011, and at the time, he was considered

homeless. But, on social media in 2012, he said that he lived in Philadelphia and had previously studied at Bucks County Community College. That night, court documents noted, Holmes allegedly fled the apartment he had been staying at, but in a bag of belongings found there, police discovered a T-shirt covered in blood. Holmes has been charged with first-degree and third-degree murder and possessing the instruments of a crime. Anyone who may have knowledge of Holmes’ whereabouts is asked to contact the Pottstown Police Department at 610970-6570 or the Montgomery County Detective Bureau at 610-278-3368.

More video emerges of suspected drug planting by Baltimore policed The Baltimore Police Department suspended seven officers after body camera video emerged that the city’s public defender said appeared to show them planting drugs in a car during a traffic stop, the second such episode in the city in two weeks. Some of the videos published this week showed officers searching around the driver’s

seat of a car for several minutes but finding nothing during the stop on Nov. 29 last year. Other videos recorded about 30 minutes later show one officer crouching near the seat as others look on. When he steps back, colleagues can be seen switching on their cameras, at which point audio can be heard. The cameras are designed to store silent video footage of the 30 seconds preceding the camera’s

activation. “Now?” someone can be heard saying. Then a different officer steps toward the seat and quickly makes a discovery. “Oh here you go,” he says, holding up a black bag that police say contained illegal drugs. “That’s the weed smell right there.” The videos were released by the lawyer of one of two people in the car who were arrested on drugs charges. Designer babies are a very real thing. When should we start freaking out? Scientists successfully replaced unhealthy DNA with healthy DNA in human embryos using molecular “scissors” called CRISPR. The future is now.

KIMBERLY M. AQUILINA @KimESTAqui kimberly.aquilina@metro.us

We might not be using jet packs to get everywhere or watching our robot Rosie pick up after our dog Astro, but the future is now and the future means designer babies. For the first time in the United States, scientists have edited human embryo DNA to correct a genetic mutation for hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, a cardiac disease that can result in heart

failure late in life or the onset of sudden cardiac death at a young age. The Oregon Health & Science University collaborated with the Salk Institute and Korea’s Institute for Basic Science to use a technique known as CRISPR-Cas9, which has been used in China with mixed results. CRISPR-Cas9 works like scissors that can selectively trim away unwanted parts of the genome, and replace them with new stretches of DNA. They found that the embryo used the available healthy copy of the gene to repair the mutated part. The Salk/OHSU team also found that its gene correction did not cause any detectable mutations in other parts of the genome — a major concern for gene editing. “We have demonstrated the possibility to correct mutations in a hu-

man embryo in a safe way and with a certain degree of efficiency,” said Juan Carlos Izpisua Belmonte, a professor at Salk’s Gene

“We have demonstrated the possibility to correct mutations in a human embryo in a safe way and with a certain degree of efficiency.” Juan Carlos Izpisua Belmonte

Expression Laboratory and a co-author of the study. In this latest development, scientists grew the embryos for a few days

and never intended to implant them into a womb. Still, the technology was not 100 percent successful. It increased the number of repaired embryos from 50 percent, which would have occurred naturally, to 74 percent. The excitement in the scientific community yet again raises the ultimate designer question: Who are we to play God? Parents could use the scientific advancement to spare their children from a lifelong debilitating disease. Or they could use it to create the “perfect” child. Controversial radio host Rush Limbaugh seems to think designer babies will rock the world of the “militant, politically active gay community.” The conservative political commentator said he predicted in the 1990s that “the pro-choice community

would lose the entire homosexual contingent, and they would become the biggest bunch of pro-lifers that you have ever seen,” he wrote on his website. “If it gets to the point that parents could be told that their child has the gay gene, if there is such a thing, or the freckle face gene or the overweight gene or whatever can be

identified, and now it’s happening!” Hank Greely, director of Stanford University’s Center for Law and the Biosciences, said, “Everybody should calm down,” because there are already regulations and safeguards in place. “We’ve got time to do it carefully,” he added. Reuters contributed to this report.

12 NEWS ISLAMIC STATE Trump administration willing to work with Congress on war authorization: Lawmakers OďŹƒcials from President Donald Trump’s administration are willing to work with Congress as it attempts to pass a new authorization for military operations against Islamic State, U.S. senators said on Wednesday. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson and Secretary of Defense Jim Mattis testiďŹ ed at a classiďŹ ed Senate Foreign Relations Committee hearing, as it writes

an authorization for the ďŹ ght against the militant group in Syria and Iraq. “They expressed a willingness to work on an authorization and I take them at their word,â€? Democratic Senator Chris Murphy told reporters. Earlier Wednesday, State said in a letter to the committee’s Republican chairman, Senator Bob Corker, that the administration is not seeking any additional authorization or any revisions to a 2001 Authorization for the Use

of Military Force (AUMF). “The United States has suďŹƒcient legal authority to prosecute the campaign against al-Qa’ida and associated forces, including against the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria,â€? wrote Charles Faulkner of the Department’s Bureau of Legislative Aairs. The 2001 AUMF, passed days after the Sept. 11 attacks to authorize the ďŹ ght against al Qaeda and aďŹƒliates, has been used by presidents since as the legal basis for a wide range of

military action. Some members of Congress argue that it is long past time to repeal the 16-year-old authorization, especially for the campaign against Islamic State, which did not exist in 2001 and actually ďŹ ghts against al Qaeda in Syria and elsewhere. The Constitution gives Congress, not the president, the right to approve such military action. Lawmakers have been struggling with the White House for a bigger say in foreign policy. REUTERS

The Philadelphia Police have arrested the owner of South Philadelphia’s Sprouts Children’s Center after allegations surfaced that claim he raped two five-year-old children — a boy and a girl — that were in his care. On Wednesday, Duncan Round, 53, of Medford Lakes, New Jersey, turned himself in to police after he was sought in the alleged rapes of two young victims. Captain Mark Burgmann of the Philadelphia Police’s Special Victims Unit, said that the allegations came to light on July 25th, but he refused to discuss the actual dates of the alleged offenses or over how long a period they may have occurred. He said that authorities were alerted to the allega-

tions after “the children just weren’t acting right.â€? Burgmann said that Round has owned the day care for 10 years and police are concerned that there may be other victims who have yet to come forward. “These weren’t the only children in the day care,â€? said Burgmann during a Wednesday afternoon to announce Round’s arrest. “We are concerned that there may be more victims.â€? Law enforcement officials said the day care currently enrolls about 37 children. Burgmann said that Round has been charged with seven felonies, including two counts each of rape, involuntary deviant sexual assault, corruption of a minor, indecent exposure and related charges. “We aren’t saying there are [more victims] but, we are going to err on the side of caution,â€? said Burgmann on his decision to ask potential victims to come forward. Anyone who may have concerns about their child and Sprouts Children’s Center is asked to contact the Philadelphia Special Victims Unit.Â

RUSSIA SANCTIONS Trump signs Russia sanctions bill; Moscow calls it ‘trade war’ President Donald Trump grudgingly signed into law new sanctions against Russia on Wednesday, a move Moscow said amounted to a full-scale trade war and an end to hopes for better ties with the Trump administration. Congress overwhelmingly approved the legislation last week, passing a measure that conicts with the Republican president’s desire to improve relations with Moscow.

While Trump signed the bill, he criticized it as infringing on his powers to shape foreign policy and said he could make “far better deals with governments than Congress can. Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev called the sanctions tantamount to a “full-scale trade war, adding in a Facebook post that they showed the Trump administration had demonstrated “utter powerlessness. “The hope that our relations with the new American

administration would improve is ďŹ nished,â€? he wrote. Trump’s litany of concerns about the sanctions, which also aect Iran and North Korea, nonetheless raised the question of how vigorously Trump will enforce them and pursue action against Russia. “While I favor tough measures to punish and deter aggressive and destabilizing behavior by Iran, North Korea, and Russia, this legislation is signiďŹ cantly awed,â€? Trump said

in a message to lawmakers. The new law allows Congress to stop any eort by Trump to ease sanctions on Russia. Trump said in a separate statement that he was signing the measure “for the sake of national unityâ€? even though he saw problems with it. His hands were tied after the Republican-controlled Congress approved the legislation by such a large margin last week that any presidential veto of the bill would have been overridden. REUTERS

Amid recent allegations, Phillies cancel Pete Rose festivities Pete Rose will not be honored by the Phillies next weekend. EVAN MACY @evan_macy

The sad saga of Pete Rose’s fall from baseball immortality (or inability to reach it) continued Wednesday when the Phillies decided to cancel their plans to honor Rose with several ceremonies and events later this season. After allegations surfaced that baseball’s all-time hit leader had a sexual relationship with a minor, it comes as no surprise that the Phillies wanted to distance themselves from the former first baseman who helped lead the team to its 1980 World Series title. The hit-king of course was banned from baseball and is not in the Hall of Fame due to allegations that he gambled

on baseball as manager of the Cincinnati Reds. In a press release, the Phillies said, “Due to recent events, the Phillies and Pete Rose have decided that Pete will not participate in the Phillies Alumni Weekend festivities to be held at Citizens Bank Park on August 10-13, 2017. Rose said, “While I am truly honored that the Phillies fans voted for me to be this year’s Wall of Fame inductee, I am concerned that other matters will overshadow the goodwill associated with Alumni Weekend, and I agree with the decision not to participate. Rose was expected to be added to the Phillies Wall of Fame on August 12 prior to a game against the Mets, with a bobblehead giveaway scheduled for the day before. Fans are allowed to exchange their tickets for another game if they wish. The rest of the Wall of Fame ceremonies will continue as scheduled.

Trump and senators seek to slash legal immigration The legislation faces an uphill climb to get through Congress where some senior Republicans back immigration reform, not a tough crackdown.

After a crackdown on illegal immigration that has sharply reduced the number of unauthorized border crossings from Mexico, President Donald Trump is now turning his attention to reducing the number of legal immigrants in the country. The White House is throwing its support behind a bill developed by Republican Sens. Tom Cotton of Arkansas and David Perdue of Georgia that would cut legal immigration by 50 percent over 10 years by reducing the kinds of relatives immigrants can bring

into the country. Under the new bill, known as the RAISE Act, the United States would prioritize high-skilled immigrants by setting up a merits-based system similar to those used by Canada and Australia. Trump and the Republican lawmakers blasted the current immigration system as out of date and argued that it hurts American workers by driving down wages. “This competitive application process will favor applicants who can speak English, financially support themselves and their families and demonstrate skills that will contribute to our economy,” Trump said. The senators said they worked closely with the White House on this latest version of their bill. “This is probably our third or fourth visit to the Oval Office to work with

President Trump,” Cotton told reporters. Slashing legal immigration has long been pushed by low-immigration advocacy groups in Washington like NumbersUSA and the ideas have been backed by now-Attorney General Jeff Sessions, who is now facing public criticism from Trump. NumbersUSA President Roy Beck hailed the bill and said that it “will do more than any other action to fulfill Trump’s promises as a candidate.” Trump vowed to crack down on illegal immigration during his campaign and signed two executive orders soon after taking office to increase border security and interior enforcement. Cotton and Perdue said their bill does not affect temporary visas for workers in certain tech sectors and seasonal jobs that are popular with

many businesses. They stressed that the legislation was narrowly focused, an approach they hoped would be able to get bipartisan support. “We’re not trying to boil the ocean here and change everything about our immigration law,” Cotton said. But other Republican lawmakers said the bill might be going too far. Senator Lindsey Graham, from South Carolina, said his state is dependent on immigrant labor to sustain the two biggest sectors of the economy, agriculture and tourism. Economists have called into the question the benefits of cutting legal immigration. FWD.us, a group that represents the tech industry said that the bill would “severely harm the economy.” The bill aims to end the diversity visa lottery, which allows 50,000

people from underrepresented countries to obtain green cards. It also sets a 50,000 annual cap on refugees, instead of a level mandated by the president. Refugee organizations said permanently limiting number of refugees allowed in the country goes against an American value

of offering safe haven to people fleeing violence and oppression. Trump suggested at an event in New York’s Long Island on Friday, where he spoke out against violence committed by Central American gang members, that immigrants today are different than in previous generations. REUTERS

THE FUN STARTS HERE

The best Stephen King movies As “The Dark Tower, the latest movie based on the best-selling author’s work, hits theaters this weekend, we’re reminded of something: As far as batting averages go, the cinema of Stephen King is pretty low. There are over 60 movies based on his books and short stories. Of these, we’d say about nine are good or even great. The rest are not. That’s about 50 non-good or even bad movies. But it’s all been worth it for the few that hit the bull’s-eye. Here’s the best of Stephen King at the movies. MATT PRIGGE “Carrie

Sissy Spacek caked in pig’s blood in “Carrie. MGM

He hit the ground running: King’s first novel became a hit movie only two years after it was published, turning Sissy Spacek into a star and giving Piper Laurie one of her flashiest roles. Both were even nominated for Oscars. It also made Brian De Palma into a name filmmaker. “Carrie was lousy with split-screen, tracking shots, slo-mo, horndog asides and emotions both campy yet deeply sincere. It’s a delirious joyride, and it set the bar for King adaptations so high it’s a wonder it’s not even the best one.

Christopher Walken in “The Dead Zone. PARAMOUNT PICTURES

Damian Lewis in “Dreamcatcher. WARNER BROS. PICTURES

Kathy Bates in “Misery. COLUMBIA PICTURES

“The Shining Don’t give King too much credit for the best Stephen King movie. He may h a v e written a ghastly book, b u t Stanley Kubrick treated it more like a blueprint. A lot of the plot, including most of the ending, was changed. A mallet was upgraded to an ax. Convoluted ghost business was replaced by weirdo ambiguity. What was literal on the page became hypnotic and freaky, precisely because Kubrick smartly favored style and mood over sense. And like a lot of Kubricks, it was hated upon released — Kubrick even got a Razzie nomination — only to become a classic, so beloved it spawned an entire docu-

Alexandra Paul in “Christine.

Stephen King himself in “Creepshow.

wknd

m e n t a r y, “ R o o m 2 3 7 , about harebrained and totally nutso conspiracy theories.

“Creepshow The key to great Stephen King movies is simple: They have great directors. King called the late George A. Romero, the father of the zombie movie, his favorite partner-incrime, and they worked in tandem on this anthology of spooky-campy tales, none of them based on previous King work. It’s the silliest entry on either’s CV, not that interested in anything beyond scoring gory laughs.

But it’s stem-to-stern fun, from the zombie dad who kills his duplicitous family to the E.G. Marshall one-man show about a rich agoraphobe who meets his just desserts.

even Walken could have seen that the ending — in which a dangerous politician (Martin Sheen) who will destroy the planet loses after a major campaign trail gaffe — was in no way accurate.

“The Dead Zone Again: It’s all about the director. For David Cronenberg, tackling King is a step-down; the director’s own films (“The Fly, “Scanners) are far more disturbing than anything the best-seller has ever dreamt up. But even as a director-for-hire job, “The Dead Zone gets it just right. It’s more a character study with a killer hook and a boffo ending, with Christopher Walken haunted by prophetic visions. Then again, not

“Stand By Me and “Misery They don’t have much in common, except for being King movies directed by Rob Reiner and being based on novels that show different sides of their author — more psychological and grounded. “Stand by Me isn’t even a little horror, though it is about boys lighting into the woods to locate a corpse. It could have been King (and Reiner — up

till then known for comedies like “This Is Spinal Tap and, of course, being Meathead) selling out. It wasn’t. And neither was “Misery, a very nasty, very funny movie in which James Caan plays a fine, straight man foil to Kathy Bates’ whirling dervish of an Oscar-winning turn.

Flawed but interesting John Carpenter tried his best with “Christine, the one about the killer car, and though it’s no great shakes, there’s enough pleasure here to get it over the finish line. With “The Dark Half, from 1993, George A. Romero returned to King duties, this time doing a straight-

up adaptation that’s more character study than spooker, and very easy to underrate. We’d never say “Silver Bullet, from 1987, was a great movie, but we have a huge soft spot for it. The part where our werewolf anti-hero (future “Twin Peaks alum Everett McGill) wipes out a pitchfork-wielding mob in the thick of fog, even chopping a poor dude’s face in half vertically, is something we saw when we were far, far too young to see such sights and not leave traumatized.

A bad-cinema classic We remember seeing “Dreamcatcher with the same fondness we do first seeing genuinely great classics like “Citizen Kane or “Satantango. It has “ass-weasels. It has an alien who inexplicably speaks with a British accent. It has a chase set inside someone’s brain. It has Thomas Jane using a gun as a cellphone. It has Donnie Wahlberg threatening the villain by invoking Scooby-Doo. Like the best bad movies, it keeps finding new and inventive ways to be terrible, and it’s never, ever boring. It’s so jam-packed we almost forgot to mention a totally nuts Morgan Freeman talking about “Friends for some reason.

Not on this list Sorry, you’re wrong about “The Shawshank Redemption. And that goes double for other Frank Darabont King adaptations “The Green Mile and “The Mist. We’d rather watch “Maximum Overdrive again.

Sorry, but “An Inconvenient Sequel” features very little hot PowerPoint action. PARAMOUNT PICTURES

“An Inconvenient Sequel: Truth to Power” Director: Bonni Cohen, Jon Shenk Rating: NR “An Inconvenient Sequel” will make you long for more PowerPoint. The rare sequel upfront about wishing it didn’t exist, the second go-around with climate change crusader Al Gore is miffed Americans treated environmentalism like a fad. We were supposed to do what its host said, or else nature would rise up and reclaim itself from the planet’s knuckle-scraping polluters. We didn’t do what he said. And now we get a second warning, which punishes us by making us watch a film whose makers have no idea what it

should be, which only exists because it needs to exist. The original “An Inconvenient Truth, from 2006, is the kind of movie that sounds like a drag but isn’t. It finds an unfairly failed presidential candidate standing in front of a screen slightly smaller than the one you’re watching, explaining charts and showing us graphs and telling corny jokes. It also revealed Gore was a charmer, more comfortable with popular science than politics. His folksy way of explaining complex, scary stuff in layman’s terms (i.e., to a nation of idiots) managed to inspire masses into taking action — or at least penciling that into their calendar then forgetting about it. It also managed to soothe us, our host’s down-home Southern drawl lulling us away from the inevitable panic attack. Then we went and treated

climate change action like nu-metal or Jennifer Love Hewitt; we forgot we ever paid attention to it. So here we are again. Gore and team attack “An Inconvenient Sequel” like stoners who forgot to do their final paper of the semester until the night before it was due. It’s a shambles, flailing about for focus. It does have a little bit of PowerPoint. The action quickly drifts away from it, but the filmmakers don’t know where to go. Sometimes they follow Gore as he globe-trots. Sometimes they cough up intel (floods in Miami, droughts in Syria, etc.) we may already know. We get a lot of Al Gore, person. And we get the sense it doesn’t know what to say beyond the obvious. So why the positive rating? To be frank, because ratings seem particularly arbitrary when you’re talking about a subject that may kill us all — or if not us, the next generation, or the one after that. It’s important that a lot of people see “An Inconvenient Sequel,” because a lot of people will probably never watch the better climate change movies made in the original’s wake. (We recommend “Chasing Coral” and “Time to Choose.”) So we give it a pass for doing the bare minimum. After all, all it had to do was show up. MATT PRIGGE

“Detroit” Director: Kathryn Bigelow Stars: John Boyega, Algee Smith Rating: R “Detroit” will make you angry. It unearths a horrifying story within another horrifying story, one that screams “timely” and “scarily relevant.” The latest from the tag team of director Kathryn Bigelow and screenwriter Mark Boal (“The Hurt Locker,” “Zero Dark Thirty”) drops us into the 1967 Detroit riot, in which the low-income black populace rose up against the largely white (and often racist and aggressive) police force. Then it zeroes in on the “Algiers Motel Incident,” in which cops tortured 12 innocent civilians — 10 black, two white — they wrongly suspected of attempted murder. At the end of the night, three were dead. The cops, of course, were acquitted. But don’t think of “Detroit” as merely visceral, just another you-are-there horrorshow. There’s a complexity and artistry within the chaos. Bigelow and Boal tell the story from both sides, even giving the racist cops — led by a terrifyingly confident Will Poulter — enough screentime that we can’t write

them off as one-note baddies. Still, don’t think that equal time means equal respect. “Detroit” doesn’t lapse into moral equivalence, suggesting everyone was too confused, too overwhelmed to do the right thing. The cops aren’t good people who did a bad thing; they’re driven by their basest instincts. Everybody has their reasons, but sometimes those reasons aren’t good. The “incident,” which eats up about an hour of the middle, may be the greatest thing Bigelow has ever made. Her handling of it is a lot like Barry Ackroyd’s cinematography: handheld and anxious but stopping short of mere herkyjerky. You can always see what’s going on, always see a method

to the madness. “Detroit” is a chance to highlight a heinous chapter in American race relations that still resonates 50 years out. But it’s also about bottling up that feeling of helplessness its victims endured. As the night wears on, the cops let some of their prey escape into the night, long as they turn their backs and not look back. “Detroit” understands why some took that chance, and it knows that they suffered survivors’ guilt on top of their already considerable PTSD. It knows how hard it is for people, even those who’ve suffered the worst of it, to fix a dangerously broken system. “Detroit” won’t make us feel better about the world, but it will help us understand it. Jay Ellis is bringing sexy back The “Insecure fave dishes on this season’s sex scenes and what it’s like working with Issa Rae. RACHAEL VAUGHAN CLEMMONS @rachaelclemz

rachael.clemmons@metro.us

If you’re watching “Insecure, and you have a crush on Lawrence this season, you’re not alone. Issa’s ex-boyfriend is looking extremely good — and we’ve been seeing a whole lot of him. Jay Ellis, who plays Lawrence, doesn’t mind the attention. “You know, Issa [Rae, creator and star of “Insecure] has been very up front with saying, ‘Listen this is my show and I’m tired of seeing women have to be naked all the time, so dudes are going to be naked in my show!’ he says over the phone. He laughs, and it’s infectious. “‘If it was

your show you would do it, and it’s my show and I’m doing it. I’m doing it for the ladies!’ You gotta love that from your boss. The 35-year-old is charming and thoughtful, and it’s no wonder why his “Insecure character has so very many vocal fans, especially on Twitter. “The response and the conversation is all you could ever ask for — it’s what I dream of as an actor, he says. “For people to be able to respond and feel a certain way and for it to move people emotionally. We talked to Ellis about what to expect this season, making sex sexy again and the sheer brilliance of “Chewing Gum. This season is exploring a lot of new ground. What do you make of Lawrence’s journey? There’s two sides of it. [One one hand,] he’s still missing what he had,

but on the other side there’s this whole new world that’s there for him to go and experience. It’s really cool to see those things examined in a way that we just haven’t before. He’s going through a lot of changes — sometimes he seems like a f—kboi, and sometimes he seems like a good dude. I think he’s all of those things, man. I think he’s on this path and he’s completely reac-

tionary. He’s not using his words. And for Lawrence — who typically comes across very much as a thinker — there’s a bit of him being lost, 100 percent. And him being lost is causing him to be reckless. [He’s] not thinking about his actions and the decisions that he’s making. Between the last episode of the last season and the ďŹ rst episodes of the second season you’re naked. A lot. We laugh about it. And we haven’t really seen that on TV that much. I was talking with a friend of mine the

other day and I was like, “When’s the last time you saw a black dude naked on TV? Literally, there’s not many examples of it [especially] in a normal way, not in a hypermasculine way. Our writers do a really good job — the nudity, the sex in the show is never “just because. It’s never gratuitous; it shows what these people are going through in their lives and in their moments. It’s also refreshing to see sex be sexy again, and not just awkward like it has been in some recent shows. “Girls comes to mind, for example. We’ve all had those awkward sexual experiences. And we get to have them in this show, but we also get to have the sexy ones. And then emotions begin to play into that, and that’s what so cool about what Issa and the

rest of our writers do, is they capture that. It’s a part of telling that story. I know you love “Chewing Gum, and Michaela Coel, and you have this role in “Insecure. What draws you to the narrative of young, somewhat awkward black people? I love any time when people can just go out there and just be us. And I love comedy, so a show like [“Chewing Gum] gets me, because I get to sit there and just laugh at the world she’s created and all the things that go through her head. It’s brilliant! We don’t get to show our truth on television that often. It’s told through someone else’s lens of what they think our truth is. DENNIS A. POMO, If you watched last night’s episode of “Power, then you know that Anika Noni Rose’s villainous Jukebox has met her end. “I didn’t know the arc beforehand, Rose says over the phone. “But thankfully Courtney [Kemp, executive producer of “Power] gave me a call ahead of time to let me know that it was happening, and that it wasn’t about me or the quality of my work. Since season three, the 44-year-old has portrayed the menacing dirty cop with a frightening intensity, a big change from earlier roles like Tiana — the first black Disney Princess — in “The Princess and the Frog. “I’d never had the chance to play a character like [Jukebox] before. “It was a nice challenge. Rose has steadily built a solid acting career over the years, with roles that revel in the black perspective — from a breathtaking turn in “A Raisin in the Sun on Broadway to HBO’s “The No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency. “Sometimes it is intentional, and sometimes it’s just about the business, she says. “There are some roles that I turn down because they just don’t resonate with me personally.

Anika Noni Rose’s badass Jukebox was a “challenge for the veteran actress. STARZ

The role of Jukebox, then? Definitely resonated. “Jukebox wouldn’t consider herself as evil per se, Rose says. “She sees herself as someone who is tough, but not really a villain. She is the way she is and I felt like I knew her. And as far as researching dirty cops for the role goes, Rose quips, “we have plenty of examples in the news. These days, the media is flooded not only with news of cops gone bad, but with political scandals (collusion, anyone?) and legislative turmoil — like the healthcare fight gripping our country right now. “Look at what’s happened with [Sen.] John McCain, the “Dreamgirls star says. “He’s someone who has been outspoken about how he thinks his party is going in the wrong direction , and then he [announced last week that]

he has a brain tumor. She continues, “His situation highlights an important issue for our country. He’s lucky to be able to get the healthcare he needs, but that might not be a guarantee for every other person in because of what his party is trying to do to healthcare right now. (Editors’ note: This interview took place before McCain voted against a Republican attempt to repeal the Affordable Care Act.] And of course, you can’t talk politics without talking about President Trump — or his inability to control his itchy Twitter fingers. Rose herself is a fan of the app, using it as a means to inform and inspire activism among her followers. But she recognizes that the platform is better served for some than others. “I don’t think that getting official announcements (SBOJUF $06/5&35014 JOTUBMMFE

So, this is my last column for Metro. I wanted to say farewell to all of you guys. It’s been an honor to know you were reading, and

it’s been wonderful to hear from some of you on social media. I hope you guys continue to send your thoughts. For my final rant, I wanted to talk about the state of the geek world. Since I’ve been writing for Metro, we’ve talked about Gamergate, the harassment of women and gender equality quite a bit. It’s strange how it’s changed in two-anda-half years. We’re talking about it more these days, but the problem doesn’t seem to be going away. As an example, think of the women-only “Wonder Woman screening announcement and the harassment we saw about that, or the attacks on the all-female version of “Ghostbusters. It’s disheartening, but it’s certainly reflective of where we

are in the world. That said, there are definitely things that have changed for the better. We have a female lead on “Doctor Who on the way! “Wonder Woman blew away the box office and (I’m sure) surprised everyone at studios around the world. People are starting to make noise when there seems to be a gender/ race disparity, and it’s at least beginning to make a difference. When I went to San Diego Comic-Con last weekend, the discussion about intersectional feminism and how it’s not just about gender didn’t get a bunch of odd looks. People participated in the conversation. I saw people politely asking for cosplayers’ pictures instead of the ass-grabs from years past. I’ll continue to talk, yell and write about all of this on all the sites I write for, as well as on social media. (Just look up my name and you’ll find them all.) I’ll continue to talk to you at conventions, and I’ll still be contributing to the “PsychGeeks series of books. I’ll miss keeping you company on your subway rides, though. May you never get stuck in a car without air conditioning (I lived in NYC for years and it sucks when that happens), may your commute be free of manspreaders and instead full of people who take off their backpacks, and may all your geeky dreams come true. And, of course, may the Force be with you.

We have a very long way to go, but there are good things happening, albeit slowly. All those predictions about geek movie/ TV show fatigue were clearly wrong over the past few years. It’s less about not wanting to see them and more about not having time to watch all of them. We’ve got mutants, Defenders, Runaways and more on the way, and the shows are getting better. We’ve got Captain Marvel, a second Wonder Woman film and I don’t even recognize all the new comics titles in my local shop because there are so many that I haven’t had

For the 34th year in a row, Musikfest takes over Bethlehem. Beginning Aug. 4 for 10 days, there will be nonstop music featuring hundreds of free shows and one ticketed premium concert daily. This year’s headliners include Santana, Chicago, Father John Misty, Live, Aloe Blacc, Godsmack, Toby Keith, the Band Perry, Lee Brice & Justin Moore and Jethro Tull. While the headlining artists are certainly something to get excited about, don’t miss an opportunity to catch some of Philly’s most promising talent on the rise at Musikfest 2017. ArtsQuest, the

community-focused nonprofit behind the event, begins accepting artist submissions in the fall of the previous year and places a strong emphasis on supporting local artists. This year, 38 percent of artists are from the Lehigh Valley and the other 41 percent come from Philadelphia and the Mid-Atlantic region. Here are a few Phillybased artists you should check out while you’re at Musikfest 2017. Cold Fronts Friday, Aug. 4 6 p.m. Provident Bank, Main Street This feel-good alternative rock group led by Craig Almquist has been hitting the stage since high school. In 2012, they got discovered by the legendary Seymour Stein (who signed Madonna and

the Ramones) while playing in the streets of Austin at SXSW. Their full-length album is getting released this fall, but to whet your appetite, check out their recently released video for “Never Been to Paris.” Foxtrot and the Get Down Saturday, Aug. 12 7 p.m. Levitt Pavilion Steelstacks Together since 2011, Foxtrot and the Get Down crafts Americana music with elements of blues, rock and soul. Frontman Colin Bundry not only sings but plays guitar and harmonica, and Erica Ruiz adds a feminine touch to the band with her soulful background vocals. Is ‘The Big Bang Theory’ over? Bad news for fans of Penny and the gang. SUNNY MONTEFIORE @MetroPhilly letters@metro.us

Are you a Penny? A Sheldon? A Leonard? Maybe you have vague recollection of sitting hungover on a friend or summer fling’s couch washing the vodka-infused pain wash off as you binge watched random episodes of ‘The Big Bang Theory.’ Maybe you’ve been a devoted fan of the show since 2007, which was, gasp, ten crazy years ago.

Either way, tune in to this news about pretty much one of the best comedy series ever. The writing is sharp, the actors amazing and the plot lines are always captivating, but that doesn’t seem like enough to save the show. Co-creator of the series Chuck Lorre has hinted to The Hollywood Reporter the end may very be upon us. Ah, please say it ain’t so! “We never really figured to be at year 11, let alone what’s going to happen after 12. One could easily presume that would be the end of the series, but I’m just amazed we’re here, Lorre said.

The statement was made during the Television Critics Association’s summer press tour on Tuesday after presenting spinoff show, called ‘Young Sheldon.’ The spinoff, which looks at young Sheldon Cooper in 1989 is narrated by Jim Parsons (and created by Lorre along with Steven Molaro) will kick off with season 1, episode 1 on September 25th, 2017. Given the show’s massive success, CBS Entertainment president Kelly Kahl stated she wants the network to keep the show for as long as it possibly can manage.

That’s upsetting, so it’s kind of wonderful to have a scene where I was like, ‘There you go!’ You can watch the scene for yourself on YouTube if you missed the episode. And actor Michiel Huisman sure enjoyed getting disrobed, it seems. “He has got a cute bod and definitely wasn’t a shy wallflower about it! He didn’t wear a sock. Which was a surprise. — which is why the team has made it a priority to surround him with weapons that can, borrowing Schwartz’ baseball reference, force

teams to pitch to him. “You have to try and find one-on-ones Cox said, “and when those teams are sliding I have to find a way to get to the

quarterback and that’s be being relentless and going out and doing anything. If we keep teams honest that will be good for everybody across the line. Everybody is going off then. At one point everybody has to get a one-on-one. If it’s a numbers game than the numbers are in the Eagles favor. Either Cox will get mismatched with a oneon-one duel against a lineman (he has battled against Brandon Brooks all camp long, one of the most exciting match ups to watch in camp) or he will draw a double team and open up an opportunity for an opponent. With some combination of Tim Jernigan, Brandon Graham, Vinny Curry and Derek Barnett flanking Cox on the offensive line, it’s a win-

Eagles red zone defense a reassuring positive for shaky secondary After an ugly day in practice, the Eagles’ secondary played much better Wednesday. EVAN MACY @evan_macy

evan.macy@metro.us

Carson Wentz was frustrated in Eagles training camp Wednesday. After a streak of days that saw him and the offense dominate the defense in practices, pass after pass sailed out of the end zone, or ricocheted off a defender as the first team offense tried and score in the red zone. The defense succeeded no fewer than a dozen times during the set of drills, which saw Jordan Matthews drop a touchdown in the back of the end zone and more than

one pass thrown away after a Wentz scramble. It’s just what the doctor ordered for a defense and secondary in need of confidence after what most agree was a pretty bad showing a day earlier. “We didn’t have a good practice yesterday but I like how the guys came out today and competed,” defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz said. “It was a lot of red zone work which shrunk the field a little bit, it was also a little tough to defend and I thought the guys bounced back from yesterday.” There are several explanations for the defense winning the day. One was the absence of LeGarrette Blount from red zone drills, a punishing running back many will agree will be the centerpiece of the Birds’ red zone strategy during the regular

season. He was out for the second straight day due to personal reasons. Another is the shoulder injury sidelining Alshon Jeffery, a red zone threat with hands Wentz has described as being the “best he’s ever thrown to.” But if you talk to the cornerbacks themselves, it has nothing to do with any of that. It’s all about teamwork. “With our offense they have a lot of crazy formations and we have to see it and have to be able to communicate,” Jalen Mills, who performed well on the outside at corner Wednesday, said. “If you can’t communicate, with the offense in the red zone, you’re going to get scored on. We communicated well, linebackers included.” With the defensive line unable to make con-

Eagles players likely to play for other teams in 2017

The Eagles are abundantly strong at several positions and some talented players could wind up with jobs elsewhere in the NFL this season. EVAN MACY @evan_macy

evan.macy@metro.us

With just 53 roster spots and 10 practice squad slots available on 32 NFL teams — and 90 players on each as training camp continues — it’s inevitable that some very good players will slip through the cracks simply due to a numbers game situation or an overabundance of talent in one particular position. The Eagles are no exception, and a few players who might be shoe-ins with other

teams could find themselves fielding offers from other organizations come September. Here’s a look at five such guys:

Unfortunately, the South Jersey native would need a miracle to make the team with so many quality backs ahead of him. “I think he looks elusive,” Eagles offensive coordinator Frank Reich said. “I think he even looks more elusive since he’s come back and lost a little bit of weight. He’s smart and he knows

what he’s doing. I think he runs hard. He’s into it. He just seems like he’s a football player. I think he has that aggressive mind-set that you need for running back.”

Marcus Johnson, Shelton Gibson, WR Blocked by: Alshon Jeffery, Torrey Smith, Jordan Matthews, Nelson Agholor, Mack Hollins In the unlikely event the Eagles decide to carry six wide receivers onto their active roster, Johnson has a fighting chance — but he’ll have to beat out Paul Turner, Gibson and Bryce Treggs for the spot. It’s more likely that he returns to the practice squad or heads to a new team. “To be honest, the first day that I got here I knew it would be a day-by-day fight,” Johnson said. “I just present the best I can every day and it will take

care of itself.” Gibson hasn’t had the best camp and is also a candidate to hit the practice squad or — with his 5th round pedegree — land a job with another NFL team. His best hope is to become a valuable special teams piece.

Elijah Qualls, DT

Blocked by: Fletcher Cox, Tim Jernigan, Beau Allen, Destiny Vaeao Qualls has been a training camp darling thus far and has a realistic shot of making the 53-man roster, but he is likely the No. 5 man at a position that will probably have four guys on the team. He’ll need to beat out the veteran Allen and last year’s draft pick Vaeao to make the team and has an uphill battle undersized at just 6-foot-1. “He’s got natural leverage. That’s a kind way of saying he’s short,” Eagles

Shelton Gibson has a tough road to the roster ahead.

defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz said. “He’s hard to handle for some of these guys. Again, we only saw him for those first couple days... But he’s got natural leverage. He’s got the low center of gravity. He’s active.”

Matt McGloin, QB Blocked by: Carson Wentz, Nick Foles It seems more and more likely that the

CHARLES MOSTOLLER

Eagles will carry two quarterbacks to their 53-man roster, and Foles — who is familiar with both the Eagles and Doug Pederson — has the leg up. If he is the No. 2, the Birds could elect to cut McGloin’s more manageable contract and add Dane Evans to the practice squad, or sign a quarterback off the street to the squad after teams make their cuts.

Nola is looking more and more like Phillies’ ace The Phillies are seeing more consistent flashes of brilliance from hurler Aaron Nola. KYLE PHILLIPPI @Kyle_Phillippi sports@metro.us

When the Phillies chose Aaron Nola in the first round of the 2014 draft, the organization felt they had nabbed their ace of the future. The LSU product had some consistency issues and injury concerns early on, but Nola has gotten back on track and in a big way. The right-hander was absolutely dominant in July. He finished with a 1.32 ERA, the lowest number in a given month by a Phillies pitcher since Cole Hamels posted a 1.23 ERA in 2014. He’s also riding an impressive streak of eight straight starts with at two or fewer earned runs and at least six innings pitched. That stretch makes him

just the fifth Phillies starter to accomplish that since 1913. Nola’s 9.40 strikeout per nine innings ranks sixth among National League pitchers while his 25.5 strikeout percentage sits as the 10th best. He also set a careerhigh with 10 strikeouts in his July 26th outing. “Nola was fantastic,” said manager Pete Mackanin following that 9-0 victory over Houston. “He just really mixed his pitches up. He threw a lot of breaking balls and that’s the kind of things you have to do to get hitters out.” That has been the case for Nola for much of this season, particularly over the past two months. The sudden dominance has been a welcomed sight for Phillies fans who began lessening expectations after an injury-riddled 2016 campaign. Coming into the year, Nola had gone 1-5 with a 9.82 ERA over his final eight starts before being shut down.

1.32

AARON NOLA’S ERA THROUGH THE MONTH OF JULY, THE EST SINCE COLE HAMELS IN 2014. Throughout spring training and in the days leading up to his first start of the year, Nola had preached to reporters how he felt much better than he did last season, and that he was feeling confident in his stuff despite the results he had in 2016. That message has certainly been met as Nola sits at 8-7 (6-3 in June and July) with a respectable 3.16 ERA on the season. After an 0-3 month of May, his ERA had skyrocketed past 5.50. To see him come back as strong as he has since then has given this organization a shot in the arm and reassured his status among this team’s future.
