In an op-ed in the Los Angeles Times, Knox took issue with the sentencing of Michelle Carter, another woman whose conviction has been on headlines plastered on national news sites. CABLE FIRMS EMBRACE FORMER FOE NETFLIX

A growing number of U.S. cable operators are forming alliances with Netflix Inc. NFLX.O, a shift that is helping the streaming pioneer add customers as its largest single market matures. No. 3 distributor Charter Communications Inc CHTR.O is expected to make Netflix available through its set-top boxes, joining more than a dozen top U.S. pay television operators adopting a

model first rolled out in Europe. Some U.S. providers could start selling the streaming service as part of their Internet and video packages. Altice NV ATCA.AS is trying that approach in France, and the company aims to extend the deal to the United States, two sources with knowledge of the matter said during the past three weeks. They requested anonymity because the discussions are private.

PENCE DENIES EYEING SHKRELI SENTENCE 2020 PRESIDENTIAL BID TURNS ON ANTICS

1

Vice President Mike Pence on Sunday denied that he is preparing for a presidential election run in 2020, saying the suggestion is “disgraceful and offensive.” Pence was responding to a New York Times report that some Republicans were moving to form a “shadow campaign” as though President Donald Trump were not involved. It said multiple advisers to Pence “have already

intimated to party donors that he would plan to run if Mr. Trump did not.” The report said Pence had not only kept a full political calendar but also had created his own independent power base, including a political fund-raising group called the “Great America Committee.”

Former drug company executive Martin Shkreli could spend years in prison for Friday’s investor fraud conviction if the judge focuses on the intended impact of his crime and his “Pharma Bro” social media antics, according to legal experts. Shkreli, widely criticized after he acquired rights to an infection treatment and then raised prices 5,000 percent in 2015, hopes to avoid prison because of an un-

usual twist to his case: defrauded investors suffered no loss from his crime. That could favor Shkreli, because investor harm is the main factor in determining a sentence for securities fraud. However, a law enforcement source said prosecutors will challenge Shkreli’s underlying assumption of how to calculate the investor losses.

A Bronx teenager, Winston (Sammy) Perez-Ventura, drowned in Ithaca just before he was set to start at Cornell University, officials said Sunday. PerezVentura went swimming in Fall Creek near famed Ithaca Falls around 2:30 p.m. Saturday and never resurfaced. The Ithaca Police Department, Cornell University Police Department, Ithaca Fire Department, and the New York State Police Dive Team searched the nearby gorges and waterways that filter into the falls for several hours. The New York State Police Dive Team team discovered Winston’s body in Ithaca Falls Gorge around 7:20 p.m. on Saturday.

TOXIC WASTE FROM POT FARMS ALARMS EXPERTS

5

Pollution from illegal Jim Schwartz marijuana farms deep in California’s national forests is far worse than previously thought, and has turned thousands of acres into waste dumps so toxic that simply touching plants has landed law enforcement officers in the hospital. The volume of banned or restricted pesticides and illegally applied fertilizers in the woods dwarfs estimates by the U.S. Forest Service in 2014, when

a top enforcement official testified that the pollution was threatening forest land in California and other states. California accounts for more than 90 percent of illegal U.S. marijuana farming, with much of it exported to other states from thousands of sites hidden deep inside forested federal land, and more on private property, law enforcement officials said. Growers use fertilizers and pesticides long restricted or banned in the United States.

‘Mr. Metro’ gives the daily paper a dose of old-school graffiti style One commuter has gotten attention for his original art on the newspaper’s covers. JASON NUCKOLLS @MetroNewYork

jason.nuckolls@metro.us

Metro hasn’t simply made artist Bob Timmer’s commute more informative; it has also given Timmer a daily canvas for his unique take on the word “Metro.” A member of the Netherlands-based graffiti crew Team Dead Fly, Timmer, 35, has earned the nickname “Mr. Metro” because of his colorful, stylized drawings of the Metro logo, done every day to pass the time on his hourlong train commute to work. “I always grab a Metro, and [one day], I looked at the front page at the Metro logo and thought, ‘Let’s pimp the logo!’” Timmer explained. “The next day I was like, ‘Let’s do it again.’ And the day after again, and the day after … but each time it went better, and the pieces became bigger.” Timmer admitted to taking two Metros from the newsstand every day: “one to draw on and one I leave in the break room at work. That one I use for the before and after pictures,” he said, referring to the many Metro graffitistyle pictures posted on his @82timerbomb Instagram account. Timmer, who works for a fruit company, said that his fellow train-

riding commuters have come to recognize his artistic endeavor, and they watch him work. “Some say something about it; others just watch, and when I look at them, they quickly look away,” Timmer observed. “Some people sit right next to me, seeing me draw, and then they accidentally hit me with their arm because they are busy with whatever. … But it’s all good — all part of the game.” Timmer, who has never had any professional training in drawing, received some much appreciated New York editions of Metro from a travelling colleague who brought them back from the U.S., a country that Timmer has yet to visit but that provides ample inspiration for the artist.

“I always grab a Metro, and [one day], I looked at the front page at the Metro logo and thought, ‘Let’s pimp the logo!’” Bob Timmer

“I’m still a big ’90s hiphop fan. If you get into my car, you still will hear ‘Ms. Fat Booty’ by Mos Def, ‘Renee’ by Lost Boyz and ‘Shook Ones’ by Mobb Deep,” Timmer revealed, adding that he has now drawn on approximately

125 Metro papers. “Every day, it’s a freestyle, really,” Timmer said. “Usually, I don’t have a plan before I’ve seen the front page.” Timmer’s fixation with Metro does not extend to any other newspapers, as he admitted that only Metro gets his artistic attention. “Why? Because I’m a loyal guy,” he joked. “So actually, I go with the flow and the end product kinda happens along the way, while drawing.” Follow Bob Timmer on his Instagram account @82timerbomb.

NEWS

HOW REPUBLICANS ARE DRIPPING AWAY Forget the tornado of unsettling tweets. Forget the thunderclaps of unproven claims. Forget the hurricane of accusations about Russia. The single biggest threat to the White House — to the presidency of Donald Trump — is now coming in the form of a slow leak. Congressional Republicans are drip, drip, dripping away. Let’s start with what you can measure. One of the biggest goals of candidate Trump was repealing and replacing Obamacare. He called the program disastrous so many times Democrats wailed on election night, knowing it was doomed. He said he’d start taking it apart on day one. But repeated attempts by the president’s team to make it happen have fallen short. Even his direct calls to senators could not rally enough votes. Then to add insult, Congress shoved a vetoproof package of Russian sanctions his way, which he expressly did not want.

TOM FOREMAN Analysis

And as he raged against his own attorney general, Jeff Sessions, some of the AG’s old Congressional allies came to his defense, suggesting the president would dismiss Sessions only at his peril. Beyond that, in general terms, they are speaking up about what some clearly see as a problematic presidency. Sen. Jeff Flake from Arizona came out this week pushing his

new book in unsparing terms: suggesting the Republican Party is abandoning its very principles in a misguided effort to make the Trump agenda work. This is risky stuff, to be sure. Despite his terrible overall approval rating, Donald Trump is still running strong with parts of the conservative base, which could decide to hammer the GOPers who are stepping out of line. But some lawmakers clearly believe the bigger threat lies in going along with policies they find questionable, pushed by a president they find baffling. Maybe the Russia investigation will turn into a nightmare for Team Trump. Maybe some other calamity will upend this presidency. But if the president wants to know where the real danger lies, he might pause and listen for that drip, drip, drip. It is real, it is right now, and it could bring the roof down.

disdain and outright outrage when hunger strikes in public. While many moms, like Devon Stewart of Harlem, proudly nurse anywhere, some are not comfortable breastfeeding in public, and for them, the city recently unveiled a “lactation pod” in each of the five boroughs, which complements the more than two dozen designated lactation rooms across the city. The pods were delivered just in time for World Breastfeeding Week, which ends today, and August being National Breastfeeding Month. “We talked to a lot of moms about what it’s like to raise children in the city. It’s a wonderful place, but there are certain challenges for young families,” said Dr. George L. Askew, deputy commissioner of the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene. “We found that one of the things we could do was to make breastfeeding easier and more comfortable.” The 4-by-8-foot pods were build by Mamava and purchased for about $90,000 total, Askew said. They are bright and welcoming, with two comfortable benches, a table and an electrical outlet. The pods are located at the Queens Hospital Center, Brooklyn Children’s Museum, Staten Island Children’s Museum, the Bronx Zoo and Harlem Hospital Center, where Metro met Stewart and her 26-month old daughter, Greyson Stewart-Rivera. Stewart, whose Instagram is dedicated to breastfeeding, admitted she was against the pods at first.

“I thought it was just a closet to take women out of the public eye to shut them away and, in a way, passively shaming,” she explained “But then I evolved. This facilitates mothers who are not comfortable breastfeeding in the open air. Also the practical aspect is that babies become distractible as they become more aware of their environment, which makes it difficult to nurse, so women might need a quiet space.” Stewart said she has never had a negative interaction while breastfeeding Greyson in public, aside from not being offered a seat while nursing her daughter on a crowded subway, which she chalks up to “a general disrespect toward mothering and parenting.” While such subway behavior may never change, the city-owned lactation pods are likely to be a permanent fixture at the five host sites, which are responsible for their upkeep. Askew said the city will visit the sites to ensure they are maintained, cleaned and refurbished as needed. While there aren’t current plans to buy additional lactation pods, Askew is confident they’ll be a welcome addition to supporting breastfeeding in the city. “We’ve created options so if you need the pump and electricity and greater privacy, we’ve given you a space for that,” he said. “If you have another child with you and you want a safe, secure place to bring that child while your feeding your other child, you have a space.”

What founders Mohammed Abouelenein, Abdelbaset Elsayed and Ahmed Elsaka started in 1990 to provide halal food to Muslim cabbies has grown into a farreaching empire with 51 locations from North America to Asia. Halal Guys’ global domination has not gone unnoticed, and Restaurant Business magazine recently named the company the No. 1 fastest-growing restaurant concept on its annual Future 50 list. “It was definitely surprising, and we’re certainly extremely grateful and humbled,” Director of Marketing Andrew Eck said.

Did the Halal Guys’ founders foresee this expansion from a cart to a worldwide franchise? When they were operating the cart in the early days, there really wasn’t any kind of sense of the popularity they had. It was never about marketing or branding — their focus has always been about serving the customer in front of them and giving them great value and great food.

It’s 98 percent the same based on location and cultural preferences at our international locations, but we do trial potential menu additions and have minimal menu altercations. In Canada, we’re about to undergo a test with poutine. People absolutely love our fries, so we have a version of that with fries, grilled chicken and a halal gravy. De Blasio to push for tax on wealthy to pay for subway fixes Mayor Bill de Blasio will announce his support for increasing taxes on the richest New Yorkers to finance transit upgrades and provide reduced fares for certain riders. The New York Times reported that the mayor will put forth a proposal on Monday to pay for subway and bus improvements and to provide low-cost MetroCards for some riders by increasing the city’s highest income tax rate, from 3.9 to 4.4 percent, on individuals who make more than $500,000 annually, or couples who make more than $1 million. “Rather than sending the bill to working families and subway and bus riders already feeling the pressure of rising fares and bad service, we are asking the wealthiest

in our city to chip in a little extra to help move our transit system into the 21st century,” de Blasio said in a statement quoted by the New York Daily News. State lawmakers in Albany would have to approve de Blasio’s proposed tax changes, a process that would take more time than MTA Chairman Joe Lhota said the agency can wait for the emergency financing, according to The New York Times.

“There’s no question we need a long-term funding stream, but emergency train repairs can’t wait on what the state legislature may or may not do next year,” Lhota was quoted by the Times. Meanwhile, Gov. Andrew Cuomo may put forth a proposal that would charge car owners when they drive in the most congestion-clogged areas of Manhattan, using those funds for the MTA, the Daily News stated. That plan has seen various versions, but neither Cuomo nor de Blasio has fully put his support behind it yet. De Blasio’s proposed tax plan would aim to generate $800 million for the MTA and would affect 32,000 New Yorkers, Newsweek added. JASON NUCKOLLS

14 NEWS GUN VIOLENCE Two Baltimore murders break 72-hour anti-violence ‘ceasefire’ A 37-year-old man was shot and killed in Baltimore late on Saturday, police said, in the second murder since activists called for a 72-hour “ceasefire” this weekend in response to the city’s record homicide rate. The unidentified victim suffered multiple gunshot wounds just before 10 p.m. on Saturday, a few hours after a 24-year-old man was reported shot and

TRUMP’S AMERICA killed. Another shooting, which was not fatal, occurred earlier in the day, police said. Community leaders had pleaded for a 72-hour pause in the violence during Friday, Saturday and Sunday, using the hashtag #BaltimoreCeasefire on social media. No murders were reported until Saturday afternoon. The city had recorded a record 204 homicides for the first seven months of the year. Following the first shoot-

ing on Saturday, Baltimore Ceasefire’s organizers said on Facebook that the killing would not stop their mission. “It’s not that we EITHER keep celebrating life this weekend OR honor the life that has been lost to violence today,” the post read. “ ... We will honor the life that was lost to violence, and raise our vibration even higher, and keep celebrating life.” The Rev. Grey Maggiano, a rector at the Memorial Episco-

pal Church in Baltimore, said on Twitter: “The victory in #BaltimoreCeasefire is not whether someone got shot or not - it’s that so many ppl mobilized to say ‘we are tired! No more.’” Despite the shootings, activists held marches, cookouts and vigils on Saturday night, paying tribute to the city’s murder victims and hugging residents affected by the violence, the Baltimore Sun reported. LEAK TO ME! LEAK SOME MORE! Where would we be without leaks? We’d be in the dark, that’s where. We’d be getting our news, such as it is, from Sean Spicer, Sarah Huckabee Sanders, Mike Dubke and the potty-mouthed Anthony Scaramucci. And, look, three of those four official mouthpieces (90 days, 88 days, 10 days) are already gone. Only Sanders (12 days and counting as press secretary) remains — for now. Everything we know about the Trump White House, we know because somebody leaked. If it weren’t for leaks, Donald Trump Jr. would never have admitted meeting with Russian dirt-slingers at Trump Tower. If it weren’t for leaks, Putin patsy Michael Flynn would never have been fired as national security adviser. If it weren’t for leaks, we would never have known that President Trump pressured FBI chief James Comey to back off. If it weren’t for leaks, we would never have known just how unhinged Trump was on the phone with the presidents of Australia and Mexico. Not one of those leaks revealed classified information. All of them told Americans things we desperately needed to know. Since Inauguration Day, only one leak seems to have had a real impact on national security. That’s when President Trump revealed secret ISIS intel to Russians in the Oval Office, information our spies collected from Israel. Not good. Other than that, it’s been good leaks 99, bad leaks 0. Now, Jeff Sessions, the attorney general Trump regretted appointing, has launched a crackdown on leaks. He will soon enough discover that the White

RUSSIA-US Russia’s Lavrov meets Tillerson, feels US ready to continue dialogue Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said he believed his U.S. colleagues were ready to continue dialogue with Moscow on complex issues despite bilateral tensions. Lavrov, who met U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson on the sidelines of an international gathering in Manila, said the first thing that Tillerson asked about was Russia’s retaliation

to new U.S. sanctions against Moscow. “He was primarily interested ... in details of those decisions that we grudgingly made in response to the law on antiRussian sanctions,” Lavrov said. The meeting was their first since President Donald Trump reluctantly signed into law the sanctions that Russia said amounted to a full-scale trade war and ended hopes for better ties. “We provided an explana-

tion,” Lavrov said, referring to Russia’s decision to take over a summer-house compound in Moscow leased by the U.S. embassy and an order to slash U.S. diplomatic presence in Russia. Lavrov said he also cited President Vladimir Putin who, in an interview to Russian TV last week, explained Moscow’s need to retaliate to the U.S. sanctions over its role in the Ukrainian crisis and recently expanded to punish Russia for meddling in the U.S. presidential election.

Lavrov described his talks with Tillerson as lengthy and said they covered a wide range of topics, from the nuclear issue on the Korean peninsula to coordination plans between Russia and the United States to withstand attacks. The two sides agreed that Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov and Under Secretary Thomas A. Shannon would continue discussing complex issues on the bilateral agenda. REUTERS

Minnesota’s governor called the bombing of a mosque outside Minneapolis the previous day “an act of terrorism” during a visit to the site on Sunday. Police in Bloomington, Minnesota, were called on Saturday at 5:05 a.m. local time about an explosion at the Dar Al Farooq mosque, after a bomb was thrown through the window of the imam’s office while worshipers were gathered for morning prayers. No one was injured. Governor Mark Dayton, along with a delegation of public officials, visited the mosque on Sunday morning. He called on the community to unite against such attacks. “What a terrible, dastardly, cowardly act was committed,” he said. “It is a criminal act of terrorism,” added Dayton, who also described it as a hate crime that was “unthinkable, unforgivable.” Federal Bureau of Investigation officials in Minneapolis are investigating the incident and declined to provide fur-

ther details on Sunday. Mohamed Omar, the mosque’s executive director, previously said a member of the congregation saw a pickup truck speeding away from the building’s parking lot just after the blast. Omar told the Star Tribune on Sunday the perpetrator may have known which window was the imam’s, who missed the blast by only a few minutes. Anti-Muslim incidents have risen sharply in the United States over the past year, according to a review by the Council on American-Islamic Relations, which offered a $10,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the Minneapolis-area bomber. Fraction of the cost, minimal risk and Hundreds of arthritis sufferers from tri-state area calling weekly t By Matt Edgar America’s Health Writer New York City - Everyone has said it at one time or another. If I had only known about “this” sooner - things would be very different today. That’s what many knee arthritis pain sufferers are saying about this technology and treatment. “We all know that countless lives are being saved every year because of early detection and better treatment ” noted the clinic director at the NY Pain MD in New York City. “The same holds true for treating arthritis pain. I believe we are having so much success at NY Pain MD because of two factors: One is we are using advanced medical technology and treatments many clinics do not use. And second, the word has spread to our community and so many knee arthritis sufferers are coming in sooner. And the earlier we can treat knee arthritis the better the results. The key to trying to avoid knee replacement surgery is doing the correct treatment as soon as possibly” What is the “correct treatment?” “That depends,” said the director. “There is no one answer when it comes to medical conditions. nee arthritis is no different. That’s why, if you have knee pain, you should have it evaluated by a doctor who deals with and treats knee pain every day,” added the director. For many knee arthritis pain sufferers the right treatment is iscosupplementation a preparation of Hyaluronic acid is applied directly into the knee joint using Precision Arthritis Targeting Technology. Hyaluronic acid is the natural lubricant and shock absorber of your joints and is found to be decreased in arthritis sufferers. This is similar to running your without oil. Obviously, the sooner you put oil back in the car - the less damage will be done. That’s why some doctors feel early vis cosupplementation gets the best results and is so important for avoiding surgery. The director believes one of the most important factors for the success of viscosupplementation is making sure you are getting it into the joint space precisely. That’s why the doctors at NY Pain MD use advanced imaging technology to apply Precision Arthritis Targeting during every treatment. A device called the "C-Arm" allows the doctor to see into the joint and actually watch the medicine be applied exactly where it is supposed to. Research shows that performing procedures without Precision Arthritis Targeting (P.A.T.T.)can result in missing the joint space as much as 30% of the time. If you had viscosupplementation treatments without Presision Arthritis Targeting Technology and did not get good results - this may be why.

Can This Be Avoided? Total knee replacement is serious surgery requiring months of rehabilitation. Some doctors think modern treatments done early enough can keep baby boomers from going under the knife. Normal Pain-Free Knee Joint Everyone Wants Proof: In the artist simulated drawings, picture #1 is a normal, pain-free knee. There is no arthritis and the knee can move and bend freely without pain.

little to no downtime amongst top reasons. to find out if treatment is right for them...Often covered by insurance. If you qualify for this treatment, it might be one of the happiest days of your life. That’s because, for the 2 ½ years thousands of knee pain sufferers have flocked to the NY Pain MD New York City

That’s when their specially trained-doctors added cutting-edge arthritis treatments to their already successful comphrensive knee pain relief program. Viscosupplementation is unique because - eventhough it is manufactured by a pharmaceutical company, it is NOT considered a drug because it is a natural substance with an incredible story.

Why So Many Want It You see, when you suffer with arthritis - the lubricatThis means instead of gliding smoothly - your bones start to rub and grind against each other. This causes a little pain in the beginning - but over time the pain steadily gets worse until it is excruciating.

Like “Joint Oil” Viscosupplementation works so well because it is like ‘joint oil.” It is a natural substance that contains one of the natural building blocks of the synovial fluid that lubricates your knee. Scientists and researchers discovered this natural building block to synovial fluid in the rooster’s comb - that big red thing on top of the roosters head. It is extracted from the roosters comb, purified and concentrated. They have also developed medical lubricants that are also natural but made a bit like yogurt and "cultured" into highly effective arthritis pain-fighting medical lubricants. When introduced directly into your knee joint, it is like squirting oil on a rusty door hinge. Viscosupplementation allows your joints to glide more smoothly eliminating a lot of the rubbing, grinding and pain.

Can Supplements Do The Same Thing? No. Glucosamine and chondroitin and other supplements are much different. You can only get this from a doctor and it often helps knee pain sufferers who got limited or no success from glucosamine and chondroitin. Beware of unsubstantiated claims made by supplements to do what this advanced medical procedure does.

Why You Should Try This Even If You’ve Already Had Similar Treatments Without Results... “We have been able to help so many knee pain sufferers even many who have already tried other treatments like Synvisc, Supartz, Orthovisc and even Hyalgan. This is because our treating doctors always use “Precision Arthritis Targeting Technology”. This allows us to place he Viscosupplementation exactly where is needs to be. Studies show doctors doing joint injections without Technology can miss the joint up to 30% of the time.” noted the Director of Center NY Pain MD is a state of the art medical facility offering the best technology.

Advanced Medical Technology Can Make All The Difference: T Ňuorososcopic imaging allows doctors to see directly into the knee joint so supposed to. Studies show that procedures done without this technology can miss the joint up to 30% of This is one reason NY Pain MD uses this P.A.T. Imaging Technology. with each and every treatment. And that’s not all “Every case is individual. Some patients get quite a bit of relief right away - others take a little more time. But most have been extremely happy. We’ve noted results lasting no less than 6 months for many but up to 2 years for some patients.. Patients who were suffering for years with bad knee pain are getting their lives back... going for walks again and exercising. It’s amazing to see. They tell all their friends - that’s why we are swarmed. After getting treatment and feeling better, many patients have decided to cancel their total knee replacement surgeries.” added the director.

Attorney General Sessions announced that certain cities would be barred from a federal grant program. Chicago will sue the Trump administration on Monday over threats to withhold public safety grant money from so-called sanctuary cities, escalating a pushback against a federal immigration crackdown, Mayor Rahm Emanuel announced on Sunday. â€œChicago will not let our police officers become political pawns in a debate,â€? Emanuel, a Democrat, said at a news conference. “Chicago will not let our residents have their fundamental rights isolated and violated. And Chicago will never relinquish our status as a welcoming

city.â€? Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grants provide money to hundreds of cities, and the Trump administration has requested $380 million in funding next year. Chicago, a regular target of President Donald Trump because of its murder rate, expected to receive $3.2 million this year for purchasing equipment. Emanuel said the lawsuit would prevent the Trump administration from setting a precedent that could be used to target other funding. Under Trump and Attorney General Jeff Sessions, the federal government has sought to crack down on sanctuary cities, which generally offer illegal immigrants safe harbor by declining to use municipal resources to enforce federal immigration laws.

Dozens of local governments and cities, including New York, Los Angeles and Chicago, have joined the growing sanctuary movement. The Justice Department said more Chicagoans were murdered last year than residents of Los Angeles and New York combined. Officials in sanctuary cities have said deporting illegal immigrants who are not accused of crimes harms public safety by discouraging immigrants from coming forward to report crimes. REUTERS

Aaron Carter comes out

Serena Williams’ cute baby shower This is the cutest.

Serena Williams had a cute lil’ 1950sthemed baby shower, and everyone was there! I mean, you weren’t there. I wasn’t there. But the likes of Ciara (local woman who went tobogganing with her infant) and Lala Anthony (who looks so good, even her estranged husband can’t deal with it) were there. Oh, and Eva Longoria, Kelly Rowland and, of course, Venus Williams. Celebrities truly have the most random friendships. Williams and her fiance, Reddit founder Alexis Ohanian, are expecting some time in the fall. Though they’ve yet to find out the sex of the

baby, they’re leaning toward the lady sort. “She won the Australian Open while pregnant,” Ohanian explained to “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” “She remarked that she feels it has to be a girl because everything that little baby went through and handled like a champ … only a woman could be strong enough to take on.” True! So yeah, these two are still in the running for being my new favorite couple. I mean, honestly, they deserve it.

Hilary Duff slams body shamers, or whatever Someone has been bullying Hilary Duff or something. Because she’s taken to her Instagram to shut down body shamers, but it’s like, who even is saying anything about her anyway? “I am posting this on behalf of young girls, women and mothers of all ages,” she started. “I’m enjoying a vacation with my son after a long season of shooting and being away from him for weeks at a time over those months. Since websites and magazines love to share ‘celeb flaws’ — well I have them! My body has given me the greatest gift of my life: Luca, 5 years ago. I’m turning 30 in September, and my body is healthy and gets me where I need to go,” she wrote. Anyway, body-shaming is always bad, and my opinion is pretty unimportant. That being said, A) Duff looks great, and B)

people who spend their free time scrambling for ways to shame celebrities’ bodies or lifestyles are lame. Unless they’re into the Paleo diet. That is just one thing I can’t forgive.

Over the weekend, Aaron Carter took to Twitter to share that he’s attracted to both men and women. His poison? A very long screenshot from his Notes app, which I, on principle, hate. "There's something I'd like to say that I feel is important for myself and my identity that has been weighing on my chest for nearly half of my life," he started. “I grew up in this entertainment industry at a very young age, and when I was around 13 years old, I started to find boys and girls attractive. There were years that went by that I thought about it, but it wasn’t until I was 17 years old, after a few relationships with girls, I had an experience with a male

the hhe word r

that I had an attraction to, who I also worked with and grew up with.” Bravo to Carter for feeling like he could finally come out as bisexual. Even if it is for the attention — it’s still mad brave, yo.

Good for you, dude.

Climate-change docs to see after ‘An Inconvenient Sequel’

Al Gore is back, reminding us not to destroy the world. But these films may be better than his latest.

‘Chasing Ice’ and ‘Chasing Coral’ The slow, steady, hopefully not inevitable erosion of the planet may be terrifying, but it’s not particularly cinematic. Any filmmaker hoping to make a movie about climate change has to ask himself: How do I show this? Director Jeff Orlowski has now made two films showing global warming as it happens, both with the word “Chasing” in the title. In 2012’s “Chasing Ice,” he uses cutting-edge cameras to show the melting of glaciers in action. If that’s

Al Gore returns to screens to fight climate change once more in “An Inconvenient Sequel.” PARAMOUNT PICTURES

not enough to scare the bejesus out of you, he returned with “Chasing Coral,” in which other eggheads place cameras under the sea, inside the Great Barrier Reef. They were there to bear witness to “coral bleaching,” in which climate change robs corals of their color and their life. Both now stream on Netflix

‘Time to Choose’ “Chasing Ice” and “Chasing Coral” use images to show the proof of climate change; “Time to Choose” goes one step further. It’s the most beautifully photographed film on the subject — a hypnotic, film-length montage reminiscent of movies like “Koyaanisqatsi.” That said, it’s still heavy on intel. It’s

from filmmaker Charles Ferguson, whose docs (“No End in Sight,” “Inside Job”) are exhaustively researched, very much documentaries as journalism. Here, he thinks as much about image as content. That’s not all: “Time to Choose” is one of the few optimistic films in the genre. It begins with the usual doomsday

‘Merchants of Doubt’ Technically this isn’t a doc about global warming. It’s about hucksters, con artists, bullies. The ones it shows just happen to be the grifters swindling the public into believing climate change isn’t legit. It delves into the history of lying on a global scale, comparing the climate change denial wave to the monsters who once claimed cigarettes weren’t harmful to their health. “Merchants” winds up getting at something deeper about deception: Its villains thrill at being contrarians, at believing that they’re the smartest people in the room. They just do that by taking a position that everyone

knows for a fact is wrong. Available on Amazon Video (for a fee) ‘Before the Flood’ We get it: Listening to brainiacs can make your eyes roll over. Maybe you want your blood-freezing data delivered by a hot celebrity. Failing that, maybe you want said hot celebrity to stand next to brainiacs, nodding as they vomit up factoids. Witness Leonardo DiCaprio, in his second climatechange doc, do just that in this Hail May pass of a doc, which tries to get people who loved “The Revenant” to care about the destruction that’s only started to hit the planet in earnest. It’s not much of a climate-change doc, but it’s still superior to “An Inconvenient Sequel.” Which you should still see. Because this stuff is important. Available on Amazon Video (for a fee)

Our favorite moments from ‘Wet Hot American Summer: 10 Years Later’ Netflix’s Camp Firewood reunion delivers. KATE MOONEY @yatinbrooklyn

kate.mooney@metro.us

The Camp Firewood gang is together again. In Netflix’s eight-part series, the crew reconvenes at camp ten years later, just like they planned in “Wet Hot American Summer” the movie. Now it’s 1991, they’re in their mid twenties, with careers, kids, dreams and romantic entanglements, which they’ve (mostly) put aside to fully indulge in this blast from the past. It’s a complicated time for our grown-up camp counselors and a lot goes down in one weekend. Here are our favorite moments from the return trip. Walla Walla hey! Spoilers below.

Victor finally losing his V card The jheri-curled boywho-cried-sex finally does the deed and it’s...so bizarre. Yes, Victor (Ken Marino) really does get some, but it’s not what you’d have ever expected: He’s propositioned by Donna (Lake Bell) to impregnate her, because her now husband Yaron (David Wain) doesn’t have the goods. But on their night of coitus, both Donna and Yaron participate, masked, in what feels like a tripped out, unhinged version of the ceremony in “The Handmaid’s Tale.” It is maybe the most hilarious scene in the show. Alyssa Milano playing a bad nanny McKinley (Michael Ian Black) and Ben (played this time not by Bradley Cooper, but Adam Scott)

are now married with a baby, but there’s something not quite right about the nanny. Renata (Alyssa Milano) seems like a responsible sitter, but there’s a “Mommie Dearest” vibe and

This time around he gets pretty close with longtime camp crush Katie (Marguerite Moreau), who kisses him and declares her feelings, but ends up being just a tease, per

Somehow, Lindsay’s season has been an subtly eye opening foray into interracial dating, and the struggles of personhood when dating while black. Many of the bachelors admit to never having dated a black woman, and Lindsay admitted before the premiere that race didn’t play a fac-

tor into the decision she made. At time we were skeptical. But witnessing her journey, and seeing Lindsay struggle with the loaded expectations piled on her has been a fascinating ride. “The Handmaid’s Tale What summer television round up in its right mind would dismiss the genius of “The Handmaid’s Tale? Putting Margaret Atwood’s dys-

topian thriller in modern times is both a necessary and awfully terrifying effort — oftentimes, “The Handmaid’s Tale hits too close to home. And with stellar performances from Elisabeth Moss, Samira Wiley and Alexis Bledel, the series is as powerful as it is disturbing. Bonus points for having the Internet’s newest boyfriend, Max Minghella, starring as the dreamy, inscrutable Nick.

HOW TO GET AHEAD

How to get into an Ivy League college Straight A’s and community service just won’t cut it.

College application season is approaching, which means thousands of students will soon be fighting for the few coveted seats at the nation’s most selective colleges, the eight Ivies. While many students think scoring an acceptance revolves around boasting the highest GPA, hours of community service and a never-ending list of extracurricular activities, the truth is, it takes a lot more than that. We spoke with admissions counselor, Danny Ruderman for the recipe to Ivy League success. Think beyond numbers When it comes to getting into an Ivy League, “the

Showing character is crucial. ISTOCK

numbers just aren’t enough,” says Ruderman. After all, “Admissions officers are going to thumb through 25,000 students with perfect A’s and really great test scores.” The last thing they want to see is another applicant with nothing

but top-notch grades. What they’re much more interested in is what you’ve done to follow your passions outside of the classroom. “They want to see that you pursue certain projects on your own and that you’re a go-getter.”

So if you like to write screenplays in your spare time, or enjoy coding and creating video games, you should explain those passion projects, says the expert. Anything you can do to demonstrate that you have a real interest in a

niche activity will help you stand out from the piles of generic applications touting recordsetting GPAs. Don’t be afraid to talk about challenges A lot of kids think giving off an air of flawlessness will help them get into a good college. “They think that their essays are supposed to say, ‘I am the perfect student, I have never experienced anything bad and I will rock it if I get into your school,’” explains Ruderman. Except that’s not true. In fact, explaining how you overcame a major challenge can be very beneficial. “If you struggled with a learning disability, but you achieved in school anyway, or you had a family tragedy that resulted in your grades dipping during your sophomore year and then you rebounded and became even stronger — tell that story,” says the college expert.

Admissions officers want to see character, “and nothing reveals character more than conflict.” Go big with supplemental material The standard college application can only reveal so much. That’s why it’s important that students jump on any chance they get to submit supplemental material. “But that doesn’t mean sending over a video introducing yourself and saying ‘I’m awesome,’” explains Ruderman. Admissions officers want to see clear examples of your skills. If you’re someone who’s obsessed with storytelling, try turning in the first chapter of your working novel, says the expert. You can even send them over a video of you performing in a school play if you’ve got a knack for theater. At the end of the day, he explains, it’s all about highlighting your individuality.

New York Jets linebacker Darron Lee still has a lot to prove in just his second year in the NFL. But he wants to become a cornerstone of the defense as they embark upon their rebuilding phase. GETTY IMAGES

Lee looking to lead Jets D in 2017 The second-year linebacker is expecting to take on a bigger role with Gang Green this fall. TONY WILLIAMS @TBone8 sports@metro.us

When the New York Jets abruptly and shockingly jettisoned long-time defensive leader David Harris, it left a huge void both on the field and in the locker room. So, with Gang Green reloading — or tanking, depending on the perspective — it’s time for someone to step up and help shoulder those responsibilities. And for second-year linebacker Darron Lee, he nominates himself. The former Ohio State star said he’s confident in his abilities to lead, as he feels more comfortable in the playbook and

being around the veterans. “Absolutely, I can,” Lee said when asked if he can have a more vocal presence this season. “I know the playbook pretty much backward and forwards now. I’m really comfortable. I feel way comfortable. Unlike last year [when I] felt lost on some stuff. I’m perfectly comfortable now.” Lee wasn’t necessarily a bust last season, but the Jets and its ardent fan base were definitely disappointed in his up and down play. He admitted that things were kind of a blur in his maiden season, noting that he couldn’t recite “half of the terminology.” Looking back on his rookie season, it’s easy to forget that the initial plan for Lee was to bring him along slowly, be an understudy at the middle linebacker position behind veteran stalwarts Harris and Erin Henderson and play as a hybrid

safety in sub packages. But injuries to key players and Henderson’s departure opened the door for Lee and forced him into action. He made nine starts and played in 13 total games with mixed results. The season wasn’t a total failure and the extra playing time should serve him well, but Lee didn’t necessarily have the kind of impact a ballyhooed rookie is expected, especially since he was also dealing with an ankle injury for most of the season’s second half. Pro Football Focus ranked Lee 84th out of 87 overall linebackers. The unevenness in his performances was displayed in certain categories graded. According to the website, Lee had the highest tackling efficiency of any rookie linebacker, but suffered in other categories like against the run (63rd), pass coverage (75th), and pass rushing (46th). He only registered one sack

and two passes defended – certainly areas of concern when pertaining to a guy who has elite speed and burst. He’ll need to pick up his pace. Luckily for him, his confidence wasn’t shattered and head coach Todd Bowles also still believes in him, both physically and as a budding leader. “It’s mentally for him,” Bowles said. “But he’s been more vocal these last few days and during the spring. It’s slowing down for him that way, so hopefully, the mental stuff makes his physical part a little easier.” Lee is noticeably bigger this camp and at 230 pounds, he still has the speed and quickness that made him a first-round pick. He had a tough time covering some of the more elite tight ends in the league and also overran a lot of running plays while showing a lot of missteps in pursuit.

Those are correctable problems. And the fact that Bowles reasoned they’ll try and be more creative in utilizing Lee’s skill set bodes well for a rebound season in year No. 2. Add to the fact that Lee already has some experience calling defensive plays in certain sub p a c k a g e s , and is feeling m o r e comfortable in the playbook — and opening his mouth among veteran players — and the Jets may have found the right guy to help fill Harris’s big shoes.

Chase Headley an unlikely producer for contending Yanks On a team packed with big names, Chase Headley is coming up big for the Yankees this year.

to make the jump to the majors to give the team another option on the left side of the infield. A torn UCL detoured Torres’ path to the majors and alleviated some pressure off Headley’s shoulders and he quickly regained his early-season form. Just look at his numbers outside May:

JOE PANTORNO @JoePantorno

Despite trailing the Boston Red Sox for the American League East division lead, the New York Yankees’ success this year has come as a surprise to many. This was a team expected to spend 2017 tuning and rebuilding before coming out in 2018 and actually contending for the postseason. On the backs of some young stars like Aaron Judge, Luis Severino and Gary Sanchez though, the Yankees are in the hunt for October baseball now with eight weeks remaining in the regular season. The team has also gotten sizeable contributions from veteran infielder Chase Headley, who has made the transition from third to first base after the team brought in Todd Frazier

from the Chicago White Sox. How many people saw him as a difference maker this year? Because that’s exactly what he’s been. In the midst of a four-game losing streak, Headley broke the skid on Saturday night with a game-winning solo home run in the eighth inning against the Cleveland Indians. His numbers don’t necessarily jump off the page. Entering Sunday’s

series finale against Cleveland, he was batting .272 with six home runs, 43 RBI and a solid .351 on-base percentage. The month of May is really to blame for the pedestrian-looking stat line. In 23 games during that stretch, Headley hit a miserable .165 (14for-85) with a .211 OBP and 29 strikeouts after a strong showing in April. At the time, it had Yankees fans calling for top prospect Gleyber Torres

Sagittarius Aim to please and you will get the recognition you deserve. Traveling, attending meetings and mixing business with pleasure will lead to advancement.

Cancer Use your excellent memory and intelligence to get your way. Refuse to get swept up by emotional spending that will lead to stress and disappointment when the bills come in.

Capricorn Be open to self-improvements. Take criticism seriously and do whatever it takes to get ahead. Money matters are best handled with care. Joint ventures are not favored.

Leo Partnerships will encourage personal growth and bring about opportunities that will help you excel. A steady pace will ensure that you reach your destination.
