New program helps students get into City’s top high schools Gaining acceptance to one of New York City’s nine specialized high schools is no easy feat, but a program developed by the Department of Education aims to make that dream a reality for thousands of middle school students. DREAM-The Specialized High School Institute is a 22-month extracurricular program that begins in sixth grade and ends in eighth, when students apply to one (or all) of the City’s specialized high schools.

These highly competitive schools admit students based on the results of the Specialized High Schools Admissions Test. Admission to Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School of Music & Art and Performing Arts is based on a rigorous audition and review of academic records. Over 2,500 students from every district in New York City were selected to participate in DREAM’s inaugural year, making it the largest publicly funded preparation program

In 2011-12, approximately 28,000 students took the Specialized High School Admissions Test, and 5,997 students received an offer to attend one of the City’s nine Specialized High Schools in September 2012.
