We all know april fool’s day is full of practical jokes and hoaxes, but not knowing its origin seems a bit silly. Here’s all you need to know about this hilarious holiday, trust me.

Fool ! new yeAr’s dAy dummy

could Be constAntine

Ancient cultures like the Romans and Hindus would celebrate their New Year’s Day on or around 1st April following the vernal equinox (changing of seasons). It wasn’t until 1582 when Pope Gregory the 8th ordered a new Gregorian calendar, as you do, moving celebrations to the 1st January. According to popular belief some unlucky loons didn’t get the memo and were ridiculed for being out dated. They’d be invited to bogus bashes or sent on fool’s errands as jokes.

Another theory brought to the table by Joseph Boskin, a professor of history at Boston University, is that the practice began during the reign of Constantine. He believed it started when a group of court jesters mocked that they could do a better job of running the country than the Roman Emperor. Constantine found it so amusing that he agreed to let the jester Kugel rule for a day. He commanded that there be a day of absurdity and from then on the custom became an annual event.

10 mAyhem! | Spring 2015

don’t Be Fooled! Although this seems legit you shouldn’t read it as fact as there are at least two troubles with the tale. First of all the Gregorian calendar wasn’t introduced to the UK until 1752 but April Fool’s celebrations were already established. The second thing taking the Mick is the lack of direct historical evidence, so don’t take it too seriously as it’s seems foolishly fishy.

leArn From the Best In 1977 the Guardian newspaper published a seven page spread on a make believe island called San Serriffe, including a detailed map, features describing the culture and geography of the non-existent nation and two main islands called Upper Caisse and Lower Caisse. Their phone rang for the rest of the day as readers requested more information about the islands.

FActs Different eras and cultures have shaped the way we do things today and in the world of fashion no less, there’s likely a weird if not wonderful story behind most of the greats. Mayhem! is here with our own Spring collection of the top ten fascinating fashion facts spanning almost 100 years.

gAme, set, mAtch René Lacoste the legendary tennis player who is said to be the inventor of sportswear founded Lacosté in 1933. He was the first designer ever to feature a designer logo, the little crocodile we all know and love. The now iconic crocodile was the result of a bet between the French team and still till this day is arguably one of the most renowned logos in the world.

The importance of eyebrows has grown tremendously recently and many women spend a small fortune on maintaining ‘the perfect eyebrows’. Thicker eyebrows are one of the latest trends which is a far cry from the renaissance period. As part of their fashion, women would shave off their eyebrows completely. These days we laugh at the ‘celebrities without eyebrows’ pictures on the internet but imagine how a renaissance woman would react to HD brows and Scouse brows.

trout pout Most lipsticks usually contain fishscales for shimmer purposes. There is definitely something fishy going on as the cosmetic companies do not state this, instead they cheekily list pearlescent as an ingredient instead. Some people might be grossed out by this but natural ingredients shouldn’t be snubbed, just think about the chemicals that could be used.

A bra that could save you life? Whatever next? It’s not as crazy as you may think. The inventor of the ‘emergency bra’ Dr Elena Bodnar won a Nobel Health prize in 2009 while the bra was still a prototype. Fashionable or style savvy doesn’t usually come to mind when thinking about safety of emergency equipment, but this bra is just that. Not only can you look good in a cleverly coloured red bra, but you can also quickly transform the garment into two protective face masks. It’s an idea I’m not sure everyone would be comfortable with.

whAt Are ruBy slippers iF you never put them on?

As you probably already guessed this next fact is about Dorothy’s ruby slippers. They were designed and made for the 1939 fi lm Wizard of Oz. A number of pairs were made at least ten to last throughout the fi lming. Four or five pairs have survived to this day. The original pair cost a whopping $3 million dollars and were stolen from a museum in 2005. Another pair are proudly owned by Leonardo Dicaprio to conserve movie history. The ruby slippers are in all probability the most iconic shoes of the last 70+ years. You can find more cool and often curious fashion facts online, watch out some of them are weird!

cumulus servus Most personal users opt for IAAS, as it offers all the basics. If you want plenty of data storage, this is the place to come. PAAS allows for a little more in-depth programming should you so wish, while SAAS comes with software pre-installed to the cloud. NAAS is nowhere near as common as its bedfellows, providing connectivity services like on-demand bandwidth.

server Technology these days – marvellous isn’t it? You’d be forgiven for wandering cyberspace with your head in the clouds, but be careful! Luckily for you, Mayhem!’s tech support team is on hand to offer some advice. Please hold, your call is important to us…proof of the old adage that ‘every cloud has a silver lining’?

Are Friends electric? In this case, yes they can be. The cloud server system allows for easy access to all your important files across multiple devices – as thoughtsoncloud.com says, “Some folks believe it’s the future. They point to the explosion of mobile computing as a catalyst for cloud computing.” TechRadar (techradar.com) also points out that they’re fast and easily malleable to fit the needs of the individual user at their own convenience. Lose an important file? You can get it back easy as pie. It really is a matter of taking a look around and weighing things up! 16 mAyhem! | Spring 2015

But it has to be a bonus having all that available anywhere and almost anyhow? Technically speaking the Internet itself qualifies as a cloud resource, too – it’s delivered over a network to billions of computers and other devices all over the world. You might dismiss it as the latest in a long line of computing trends, but think carefully before you do. It’s available in four main categories to those who might wish to take advantage, and it costs less than you might think. These are Infrastructure As A Service (IAAS), Platform As A Service (PAAS), Software As A Service (SAAS) and Network As A Service (NAAS, not to be confused with Nas, who’s a rapper).

For every positive, there’s a negative. It’s a fact of life even when it comes to machines! The biggest probably comes with concerns over the security of the whole enterprise. You might feel uncomfortable at the thought of even giving personal data to what is essentially a virtual third party as a personal user, but think carefully if you’re considering taking advantage of the cloud’s potential applications in the cut-throat world of business. The Java Code Geeks (javacodegeeks.com) have this to say on the matter: “Security is the biggest concern when it comes to cloud computing. By leveraging a remote cloud based infrastructure, a company essentially gives away private data and information, things that might be sensitive and confidential. It’s then up to the cloud service provider to manage, protect and retain them, thus the provider’s reliability is very critical. A company’s existence might be put in jeopardy, so all possible alternatives should be explored before a decision. Similarly, privacy in the cloud is another huge issue. Companies and users have to trust their cloud service vendors that they will protect their data from unauthorised users. The various stories of data loss and password leakage in the media do not help to reassure some of the most concerned users.” Don’t say we didn’t warn you…

mayhem! meets…

Comedian, actress, and comedy show panellist Gina Yashere is back from america launching her new tour ‘Lough Riot’. This year welcomes an exciting 12 months of touring. We get exclusive backstage access to find out more! Your new tour, Laugh Riot, comes to the south this April, what can people expect from the show and how is it different to your previous work? It’s basically a round-up of the last year and half of my life and a couple of years of travel, from touring with Katt Williams and being paid by half naked women to ending up in a high-rise brothel in Singapore. It’s a night out with your funniest mates, but funnier. You’ve appeared on Mock the Week and Live at the Apollo, what effect has this national television exposure had on your career as a comedian? Television exposure is always great as more people get to see you and it drives people to the live stand up shows, which is what it’s all about for me.

“I’m still modest because I’ve not yet achieved what I set out to do!” MAYHEMMAG |

Since 2007 you have lived in America and broken into the American comedy scene appearing on Comedy Central, how challenging was entertaining American audiences compared to the British? I don’t fi nd American audiences particularly challenging. My humour isn’t quintessentially British in that I’m loud and physical and straight to the point, so my humour works perfectly in the States. I’ve never had an issue at all. All I’ve had to do is slow down my speech and enunciate.

What was your main focus for the content of the shows in the Laugh Riot tour? There is no focus of content, it’s a bit of everything. If anyone has ever been to see me before, it’s a jumble of stories – I don’t do themes because I don’t like sticking to one theme; if I get bored of one subject, I drop it and talk about something else. Female comedians haven’t always been seen as equal to their male counterparts, how does it feel now enjoying equal billing and even beating them to awards? I still don’t believe I’m getting equal billing. I think male comedians on the whole are still substantially more successful than their female counterparts, so we’ve still got a long way to go! You released your critically acclaimed DVD, Skinny B*tch, back in 2010, what was the inspiration behind your DVD title? Very simple – I used to be fat and I lost a ton of weight. When I’d step on stage, the audience didn’t hear the fi rst five jokes I did because they were all too busy discussing my weight loss amongst themselves. I heard rumours that I was a crack-head, that I’d had a gastric band, so basically the title of the DVD and some of the material was to clear up those misconceptions.

mayhem! meets… You’ve appeared on the West-End stage in the Vagina Monologues, a play that raises money for groups working to end violence against women. What attracted you to this role? Nothing, it was just interesting to do! It was a fantastic play, I loved the characters and it was something different for me to do, and it was for a good cause. Although primarily a comedian you’ve branched into acting appearing in feature films such as Kiss Kiss Bang Bang and Mr In-Between. Would you like to do more acting and if so what would you like to do? I enjoy acting, it’s fun, but I see myself as a comedian who can act rather than an actor. Having said that, of course I wouldn’t turn down a movie role because I’m not an idiot, but everything I do, including acting, is to drive people to see my live stand up shows. At what age did you become aware of comedy, and which comedians did you find most influential? I didn’t become aware of comedy until I started doing it. I used to run home from school to watch Kenny Everett, but I didn’t know what that was – I just loved watching it and I found it hilarious, but I never followed comedy. I’m not one of these comedians with an encyclopaedic knowledge of comedy. I just know that I’m good at it, so I don’t really watch other comedians because I don’t want to be influenced by anyone else. There’s only one Gina, and if there’s anybody else out there who’s like me, it’s because they’re influenced by me. You recently won Best Female at the Black Comedy Awards, how did it feel achieving such an award? It was great to know that people appreciated what I do, but what really validates me is people buying tickets to come and see me. MAYHEMMAG |

“ I had to go into the men’s toilet with my hardhat pulled over my face” In recent press you’ve been described as ‘refreshingly modest’ how do you keep your modesty after receiving so many honourable reviews? I’m still modest because I’ve not yet achieved what I set out to do! Once I’ve reached multi-million pound status with a mansion in the Bahamas and an Aston Martin on my drive I don’t think I’d be quite that modest. Born and raised in England, but for the last seven years based in America, where would you call home? New York and London; I live in both places. England will always be home because I was born and raised here, and I love coming back, but America is my current home because that’s where I live and work. It’s been mentioned that you were doing as many as six shows a night in New York, how did you keep your passion for performing? I love doing that many shows a night because it keeps me writing and creating. New York is such a huge diverse city and audiences vary widely from night to night. You’re an active user of Twitter, Instagram and Facebook, how important is social media for you right now? It’s very important – the world is changing right now. Whereby before as a comedian you were judged solely on your performance, now people judge on your online following, but it’s also a fantastic way to keep in touch with my fan base. I don’t employ anybody to manage my accounts – when you’re talking to me on Facebook, you’re actually talking to me. The pictures of me on Instagram in my Primark onesies are definitely not airbrushed!

What do you miss most about the UK? I suppose I should say my family and friends, but really it’s the chocolate! Before becoming a comedian you worked as a lift engineer, did this male dominated environment help you to adapt to the male dominated comedy world? Yes. I worked on building sites where I was the only female out of 2000 men and there was only one female toilet, so if I needed to go quickly I had to go into the men’s toilet with my hardhat pulled over my face. Compared to that, comedy is a walk in the park. You dramatically lost five stone in your fight against Lupus, a rare disease, what impact did this have on your own body confidence? I’ve always been pretty confident in myself, though I didn’t enjoy being fat, so my personality didn’t change at all when I lost the weight, but I very much relish being able to fit into skinny jeans! In a recent interview you called yourself a “purist” comedian. What is a purist comedian? I am a purist in that I love stand-up comedy. That is what I want to do. Everything else that I do – the acting, the sketches – is all to feed my stand-up comedy. So in a way I’m a snob in that I hate actors who do stand-up comedy while they’re waiting for an acting gig, or people who use stand-up comedy as a stepping stone to get into TV and their showbiz careers. I find it highly disrespectful of the art form, and that’s part of the reason why I left LA and moved to New York, because I couldn’t stand to watch audiences be cheated by these charlatans.

for Hair and Skin Spring is here and summer is almost upon us, so get ready for that summer glow with Mayhem! as we start to embrace the season ahead our skin is still in the winter – dry, scaly and rough. We’re here with a selection of hair and face masks to get your skin feeling soft and nourished once again.

hAir treAtment spring cleAn Before we introduce our amazing treatments we need to start at the bottom. That means a facial spring clean to remove dirt and dead skin cells. We advise you use this mask at least once a month for a deep cleanse. This treatment is suitable for all skin types. Pop some cabbage into a blender and mix for 30 seconds, add one tablespoon of honey and olive oil and mix for a further 10 seconds. Once combined, apply the mixture to cleansed skin including your neck. As we’re deep cleansing the mask needs to be kept on for at least 30 minutes. 22 mAyhem! | Spring 2015

Acne remedy nourishing treAtment This treatment is perfect for a little pick me up or simply for a weekly mask, perfect for all skin types. Beat one egg yolk and mix with one teaspoon of olive oil, then mix in 2–3 teaspoons of oatmeal. If you don’t have oatmeal use a mashed banana. After mixing thoroughly, apply to a freshly cleansed face and neck and leave for 15–20 minutes. Rinse and leave skin at least 10 minutes before applying any make-up or other skincare products.

When it comes to acne we have to treat our skin with more care to avoid irritation. This two ingredient mask is perfect for new/old acne, scarring and overall nourishment of the skin for a more hydrated appearance. Apply once or twice a week. Simply grab an orange and grate the peel. Then add one teaspoon of honey and mix. Apply to the skin for 5–10 minutes and allow the mixture to be absorbed. Before rinsing, exfoliate the dried mask to get remove unwanted dead skin cells. Rinse off and apply moisturiser.

In winter our hair becomes dry, brittle and is prone to split ends. To get your hair looking smooth and sleek all you need is a few oils. In a bowl, mix four tablespoons of olive oil and three tablespoons of one of your favourites (almond oil, coconut oil, etc). Simply apply the mixture over the hair avoiding the roots. Distribute the treatment evenly using a comb. Wrap the hair in a towel for 25 minutes. Then wash out and follow with your chosen shampoo and conditioner. So there you have it, go and get beautiful in time for the sunshine!

living in the pAst WHY are We So aTTraCTed To oLd faSHion TrendS?

We’re all part of endless conversations about how bad the fashion was way back when. So why is it that we’re all consumed in bringing back these fashion trends? We’ve all realised they were bad, but for some reason there are the hopefuls who believe this time round it’ll be different.

BAckpAcks

Jelly shoes This disastrously unattractive excuse for a form of acceptable footwear just won’t disappear. The original silver glitter disco like chunky shoe was worn by children. With frilly top socks, acceptable at some schools, awesome for the weekend, and what’s more they were waterproof so that made them the perfect holiday shoe. We saw the odd pink edition of the sparkle shoe, but there weren’t many convinced this piece of plastic was going far in the fashion world. But here we are again, a new season of spring/summer wardrobes are hitting the stores and they’re back … again! The manufactures have got a bit more creative and introduced new colours, you can decide for yourself if this is a good or bad thing. Should they stay, or should they go? 24 mAyhem! | Spring 2015

dungArees The denim one piece. The glammed up version of work overalls. Dungarees have been around for decades and they’re still a main focal point in fashion magazines today. So how do dungarees stand the test of time and remain a staple in wardrobes around the world? Dungarees are a quirky change from your usual denim, you can pair with them your favourite top and they come in a choice of colours and the option of long or short. You could wear dungarees all year round – they’re easy to accessorise, simple and comfortable to wear and like most pairs of good denim jeans, they’ll last you for years!

A favourite of children everywhere. Picking the biggest best backpack in the summer holidays ready to show off when school starts again, the backpack has now slowly made its impact on the adult fashion world. The practical accessory has had a makeover and you’d be hard pushed to fi nd a high street fashion store that doesn’t stock them in every colour, size and material you can imagine. The old school chunky backpack is still popular but what’s taken our fancy this season is the leather look backpack. Classic black for any occasion, but for the spring/summer season, outlets are stocking them in popular colours, including silver and lilac. No more annoying shoulder ache on one side of your body, or the annoyance of pushing through a crowd and fi nding your handbag half way down your arm, the backpack is the perfect bag this season, and let’s face it, it probably will be next season too!

on the cheaP! With the days getting longer now is the ideal time to look at restyling your home, and armed with Mayhem!’s top five tips, you can transform and update your pad at a fraction of the price without wasting your entire weekend stuck indoors!

mirror mirror! A simple trick to give the illusion of more space in a room is by hanging carefully placed mirrors. They are a relatively inexpensive investment, but can dramatically improve a room, particularly a small space. Go crazy with a large gothic style or pick more intimate mirrors for a focal talking point.

themed rooms

FeAture wAlls The latest interior design trend to brighten any house is to create a feature wall in a bold colour or pattern. Make a statement by using bright oranges, corals, blues or purples contrast with more subtle creams and neutrals on the remaining walls. This way it keeps the room looking fresh, and spacious. If using wallpaper offset a busy design with a similar subdued colour for the rest of the room. 26 mAyhem! | Spring 2015

Whether you decide to turn your study into your “Globetrotting Travel Room” or the spare room into “Hollywood Walk Of Fame”, themed rooms are fun to create. Add little touches like glitzy lampshades carefully placed souvenirs, or browse antique/second hand shops for that extra quirky item. You never know what you might fi nd!

upcycle Instead of getting rid of an old table, dresser or chairs, save money and upcycle! Current popular choices include buying specialised chalk paint to distress and age furniture, or upholster chairs with new fabrics thus saving money, while also being good for the environment too. Update pictures by framing old posters, programmes, or forgotten photos.

getting lyricAl For fans of music or prose, the bang on trend this season has to be lyrics, quotes and favourite phrases on literally everything in the high street from cushions and signs, to adhesive wall art. Shop around, pick something personal that has special meaning and let your imagination go wild!

de-stress

Stress usually comes to us when were working hard at our computers which means we’re often restricted to the desk, but here are some tips to help you de-stress when you’re at work.

Taking deep breaths can combat your stress levels and help regain focus. This can be done whether you’re in a meeting, sat in front of your desk, sitting at home, commuting to work or anything you do in your everyday life.

We’re designed to move around, not to sit in chairs all day. So if you’ve been staring at the screen for the past hour and your back is starting to ache, get up and move about. Exercise is the best cure for stress. It releases endorphins which make you happy. Simply take a walk or jog around the block a few times.

There’s nothing more relaxing than getting lost in the world of your favourite book and it can also help reduce stress. Occupying the brain by reading helps distract you from daily tensions. Grab your favourite book, find a comfy spot and get reading. As little as five minutes can have a positive effect.

Put on some music and start clearing your desk because believe it or not, having some sense of control on your work and surroundings helps reduce the chaos. Losing reports or important information can promote the stress levels, so why not take the time to rearrange and get some order back onto your desk.

(But neVer thought to) The UK produces a huge amount of waste, more than 100 million tonnes to be exact. One tonne is about the weight of a small car! On average, each person in the UK throws away their own body weight of rubbish every seven weeks. Wasteful or what? Instead of throwing your garbage away, why not reuse or recycle to protect the environment and keep us green. Mayhem! is here with a selection of products you might not normally consider…

wine corks Wine makes shoes! Of course! Now you can actually say you’re improving the environment next time you’re glugging the grape juice. A large number of corks can actually make a big impact on the environment, check out www.recork.org to fi nd out how they’ve collected 45 million corks.

Believe or not Nike actually grind down the rubber on the soles of the trainer to help make running tracks. Just hand your smelly old trainers to your nearest Nike shop, (ok maybe give them a quick spray fi rst). If they’re still looking fairly ‘unused’why not donate them to a charity shop.

keys Whatever happens to the land of lost keys? Where do they come from? What do they unlock? There are several homes for lost keys, charities such as keysforkindness.com. This family-run charity recycles keys and donates the money they make from the metal to aid Multiple Sclerosis. Alternatively the metal in keys is recyclable so they should accept them from your green bin or at the tip.

cds Once you’ve transferred your CD to your MP3 player or laptop, the case and CD will gather dust and clutter your home. These dust gatherers can be recycled at your local tip or charity shops and libraries will happily take them off your hands.

Journey oF A liFetime

eArly yeArs Believe it or not your music tastes can be traced right back to being in the womb. As you develop as a baby during the end of the second trimester you start to hear. While the sound of your mothers voice or hearing music may appear to be muffled noises, there is science to suggest it increases the heart rate, and is a calming soothing influence. Although at this early stage you’re unable to distinguish between Mozart and Morrissey, you can still recall the same sounds when they’re later played. Therefore an association is made which is reinforced as you grow up, meaning your parents tastes in music are hugely significant in your early years.

teenAge kicks The most influential years of our music tastes lies in our teens and early twenties, a time that corresponds with going out, dating and discovering ourselves. The ‘teenager’ as a concept was born in the sixties where the new younger generation created their own rules and image that was a far cry from their dowdy post-war parents. With more leisure time and disposable income than ever before, music was crucial in this movement, and thus rock and roll was born celebrating all that was good with being young. It ripped up the rules and redefined an era. This trend continues today with the mainstream music aimed squarely at the young and influential, continually pushing the boundaries of what came before.

holding BAck the yeArs What was once considered revival music has now spurred an entire industry. The original ‘baby boomers’ of the fi ft ies and sixties may have grown up in the last five decades, but they refuse to get old. Like fashion and the four seasons, everything eventually comes full circle and judging by the popularity of the most recent stadium tours bands like The Who, Rolling Stones, Elton John and Rod Stewart they are testament to this fact. There still remains a demand for these acts which proves good music doesn’t have to go out of fashion! A younger audience is also discovering older formats with the growing popularity of vinyl sales in 2014 which reached one million which is the highest since 1996. As the lines between classics and new music continue to blur in the twenty-fi rst century, it would appear that our favourite bands are born out of our teenage years which gives us the musical blueprint for what stays with us for life. Although we acquire new modern favourites, the power of music dramatically takes us back to feeling 18 again. Whether The Beatles or Taylor Swift , download or compact disc, it defi nes us and proves we really can’t live without it!

What to LooK For? Buying a second-hand car is an art. With an extensive list of things to look out for, there’s more to it than a good tyre kick and a whiz around the corner. You can find that dream car with even the most modest of budgets, but beware, it’s a minefield out there. Mayhem! is here with a few simple tips to consider before parting with your cash when it comes to the second hand motor.

pAintwork Check the paintwork of the car, a second-hand won’t always be in perfect condition, but a fresh paint job could be to concealing rust or a recent accident.

engine Ask them to pop the bonnet for you to check the engine is free from leaks or corrosion. Dark, wet looking areas is likely to be oil. Stand quietly for a moment over the engine – listen out for any irregularities or knocks as the engine turns over. 36 mAyhem! | Spring 2015

tyres Check the tyres are in a good condition. Uneven tyres could be an indication of suspension problems, which aren’t cheap to fi x. A full set of new tyres could set you back too. Don’t forget to check the spare!

upholstery Check the seats for wear and tear and ensure they’re in reasonable condition. Different areas of wear and tear can give you an idea of how the car has been used.

lights

seAtBelts

Check all the lights, including brakes, headlights, reverse lights and indicators are working. Ensure there are no cracks or damage to the light housing.

Ensure all five seat belts (with the clicker) are in working order; this is a legal requirement, so they should be. Check for snags or rips in the belt, this can be an MOT failure.

windows

doors

dAshBoArd

Check all windows are in working order and that the windscreen wipers are functioning properly. Be sure the windscreen doesn’t have any cracks or chips. You should have three mirrors in total; one rear-view mirror and two wing-mirrors.

All doors and boot should open and close easily. If any hinges are loose or rusting this could be expensive and difficult to fix. Ensure the space between the panels is even. Large or small gaps could indicate panels have been replaced or moved by a knock.

There should be no warning lights illuminated on the dashboard. If there are any lights on, ask the owner what it’s for and ensure it’s fi xed before you shake hands. You don’t need an electrical fault on the car before you’ve even bought it.

Air-conditioning Ask to check the air-conditioning and heating system. These are important for keeping the windows clear, and of course, keeping you comfortable.

Ask to see the vehicle service book and check for the service stamps. This will indicate how well the car has been looked after and will alert you to anything major that has come up in previous MOTs. Check the advisory items on the current MOT to see if they’re expensive to fi x. MAYHEMMAG |

The average mileage of a car is between 5–10,000 miles per year, so if a car is five years old the mileage should be around 50,000 miles, anything more than this could mean that the car has been heavily used. Modern engines can easily exceed 100,000

miles but there are countless other components that may need replacing. All cars need TLC and regular maintenance, as well as road tax and insurance. These vary from car to car, so be mindful of all these things before sealing the deal.

Fitness

So why not ditch the running machine for something a little more exciting? Do you like dancing and want to include that into your fitness routine?! Well now you can. Get your body moving to a new dance workout that goes by the name of Sh’bam. Created by Les Mills Group who introduced Body Pump and Body Attack into the exersize world. Sh’bam tones and shapes your body whilst dancing to the latest chart and remixed Latin music. In 45 minutes you can burn up to 400 calories! The routine begins with a simple warmup, followed by 35 minutes of dance moves, taught by an instructor, but allowing you to add that extra spark and fi nally fi nishing with a good old stretch to relax your muscles. To get the best results take up Sh’bam 3 times a week.

BikrAm yogA

Gyms are great, they get you out of the house, tone your body and shift unwanted weight, perfect for this time of year in preparation for the summer. But in this ever changing world of fitness there are always fresh, new alternative exercises and classes to get stuck into.

Yoga certainly gives you that calm, relaxing feeling but if you fancy something different than the tradional Hatha Yoga that will raise your body temperature and get you sweating, then why not give Bikram Yoga a try. Based on the traditional yoga postures Bikram is practiced in 40 degrees heat over a 90 minute session. You will certainly notice a difference in your flexibility and posture.

power plAtes Fancy working your whole body on one machine? Well now you can with Power Plates. A completely different approach to working out that in just 10 minutes will have the same effect if doing a 60 minute training session. Power Plates use vibration to stimulate the muscles at a rate of 30–50 per second as apposed to once or twice. The initial vibrations can feel a bit strange, but like anything your body will get used to it. There are many different exercises you can do using Power Plates from squatting, step lunges, press ups and even yoga poses. Use the swiss ball and weights to ramp up your routine. So why not try an alternative fitness routine to battle the bulge!

crossFit WRITTEN BY grAhAm broWn

BelieF in Fitness Developed in California by coach Greg Classman initially as an exercise philosophy and a competitive sport, CrossFit workouts combine elements of gymnastics, weight lift ing and high intensity training. It’s a fitness that’s defi ned in a meaningful, measurable way. Its effectiveness is down to its community that arises from the workouts, all members support each other on their own individual journeys, whether that’s competing at the highest level or attaining the best level of fitness possible. 40 mAyhem! | Spring 2015

All ABout the ‘wod’ The Workout Of the Day or ‘WOD’ is usually broken down into a warm-up phase, a taught skill segment and a period of stretching. The skill could be anything from handstand press ups to structured power lifting, focusing on technique, posture and execution. Some performances on each WOD are scored or ranked to encourage competition and also to track individual progress. They’re based on functional movements, moving the largest loads in the shortest period of time.

Feel the Burn The two main attractions with CrossFit over other more traditional workouts are that they combine variety with tangible results; no workout is ever the same. The WOD uses a range of gym equipment from kettle bells, ropes, tyres, medicine balls and climbing frames to body conditioning like planks, press-ups, and resistance training. This ensures the body is constantly being challenged and developed; ensuring an exciting programme of fitness is delivered to each individual.

knowledge is power Like any high intensity workout, CrossFit is not easy or simple and there are risks of injury; if the exercises are performed incorrectly or to poor form. New members will learn about how to move safely and effectively, how fitness can be applied in real life and the true value of nutrition; fuelling the body with the right meats and vegetables to support exercise. If you want to see intense noticeable gains, in a competitive fun environment then why not give CrossFit a try, it may just change your life!

“Forget the good guy, I’m over that now!”

Hugh Jackman stands, hands on hips. He’s a fine specimen of a man, a fit man, an active man. But he’s also a man at a crossroads, as Mayhem! discovers. be wiped out. But actually, the most human character, and the one you’re rooting for the most, is the robot.”

To most people, three-and-a-half years represents a decent span of time, but when your business is the movie business, the movie scripts falling through the letterbox today are the red carpet premieres of 2018, and in the case of the likeable Australian actor, the point at which he declares himself half a century old… or young, depending which side of bed he gets out of.

Chappie is interesting for the fact it sees Jackman taking a villainous route in his acting career. Perhaps with that big ‘five-zero’ approaching, this represents a career-defining switch, and is reflective of a deep rebellious undercurrent that Wolverine has done his best to repress, sometimes unsuccessfully.

“I’ve never had a big problem with ageing or getting older,” he begins, “providing I feel as though I’m keeping the body moving, keeping the brain active and doing something new and important with every project.” It’s a philosophy that many others before him may wish they’d embraced. Ultimately, Jackman isn’t ever going to be an actor who gently morphs into the background; he’s always pushing, always furrowing a brow with new ideas and inspirations. Sometimes he gets it right – X-Men has been prolific, Movie 43 was catastrophically bad, while this year’s projects, Chappie and Pan, offer a diversity that perhaps resonates back to his take as Jean Valjean in 2012’s Les Miserables.

And then there’s Pan, or more specifically, Hook, a clawed character of distinction that Jackman is reincarnating later this year, another baddie, another new identity. “Ask my kids and they’ll tell you differently – I’ve been the villain for ages!” he laughs. “They see me as the villain most days!” “But yes, I guess the last villain was probably in Deception [2006 thriller with Ewan McGregor and Michelle Williams]. I do have Pan coming out where I play Captain Hook, though he’s a panto villain, to be fair.”

In Chappie, he plays a vicious brutal army commander willing to stop at nothing to destroy artificial intelligence. “I feel a lot of people assume a movie about robots is all robots, future, apocalyptic … the humans are going to MAYHEMMAG |

But as a hero, you get beaten up the entire movie, except in the last scene. And then you have the villain – he wins every fi ght except the last one. So the villain has the sweet deal. Forget the good guy, I’m over that now!” Spring 2015 | mAyhem!

music to my eArs conor mAynArd TALKING ABOUT

With new music hitting the airwaves and vibrating tiny earphone speakers throughout the year, we've cobbled together a few new releases we think are worth a listen or two for the next couple of months. Turn it up! 46 mAyhem! | Spring 2015

Conor Maynard returns with his brand new single, Talking About, through Parlophone Records. Talking About is an out-of-the-box smash that is destined to ignite dancefloors on both sides of the Atlantic.

kiesZA SOUND OF A WOMAN Following her triumphant breakthrough in 2014, Kiesza returns with new single, Sound Of A Woman, released via Virgin EMI Records. An ode to love, a missive to heartbreak and a dedication to the dance floor, Sound Of A Woman adopts a re-working from a new collaboration The AKA Orange Remix, bringing their acclaimed skillset to offer a beat-laden, hand-raising anthem fit for dance floors to festivals and beyond, throughout 2015.

A pumping four-to-the-floor monster, boasting squelchy synths, bouncing bass and a head-spinning chorus, it’s Conor as you’ve never heard him before; drenched with the vibes of Miami’s music scene and delivering a track that nods to the ‘90s era of his birth while smashing straight into the sound of 2015.

Kiesza’s standout debut album also titled Sound Of A Woman includes her platinum selling debut single Hideaway – one of the biggest selling singles of 2014. With 30 iTunes No.1’s under her belt and further chart success from club smashes Giant In My Heart and No Enemiesz, Kiesza has fi rmly cemented her status as one of the most exciting new debut artists of the last 12 months.

Love Songs For Robots is the highly anticipated fi ft h record from Patrick Watson released via Domino. Love Songs For Robots is the follow up to Watson’s 2012 release, Adventures In Your Own Backyard, which received widespread critical acclaim. The new music was recorded at Capitol Studios in Los Angeles and Pierre Marchand Studio in Montreal. Of the record, some of which was debuted at private concerts in small loft spaces, Watson explains, “I started thinking about things in a very mechanical way. I found it interesting how we would use our senses to come up with an emotional reaction. As you get older you get to know yourself better and I realised that a lot of my emotional reactions were mechanical responses and that was hugely influential. I didn’t want to be a robot. But the reason why we are superior to computers is that we have emotions and I realised that emotions are mechanical so the only thing left between us and robots is curiosity and inspiration – and I don’t think you can program that into a computer. That’s definitely where I was at when I started writing the record.” RELEASED 11TH MAY

villAgers DARLING ARITHMETIC Darling Arithmetic is the third album from Villagers. The follow-up to Conor O’Brien’s debut, Becoming a Jackal, and its successor, Awayland – both hugely acclaimed and Mercurynominated – is a breathtakingly beautiful, intimate album entirely about love and relationships. Darling Arithmetic was written, recorded, produced and mixed by O’Brien at home – the loft of a converted farmhouse that he shares in the coastal town of Malahide to the north of Dublin – revealing a single-minded artist at the peak of his already considerable songwriting powers. It encompasses the various shades of feeling – desire, obsession, lust, loneliness and confusion, and deeper into philosophical and existential territory, across a cast of lovers, friends, family and even strangers. Backing up his supple and emoting vocal and guitar is the subtlest palate of instrumentation – piano, mellotron (which accounts for the album’s occasional horn and cello tones) and brushes. O’Brien plays every instrument on these exquisite, melodic songs in a sparse, spacious, acoustic-leaning fashion.

Blur THE MAGIC WHIP It’s 16 years since their last album as a four-piece and 27th April sees the release of a brand new album from blur on Parlophone, titled The Magic Whip. The recordings, which began during a five-day break in touring in Spring 2013 – at Avon Studios in Kowloon, Hong Kong – were put aside when the group fi nished touring and returned to their respective lives. Last November Graham Coxon revisited the tracks and, draft ing in blur’s early producer Stephen Street, he worked with the band on the material. Albarn then added lyrics and the 12 tracks of The Magic Whip are the result. As the only artists to play Hyde Park four times, blur will return to the historic London park for a headline show on Saturday 20th June 2015 as part of Barclaycard presents British Summer Time Hyde Park. Tickets go on general sale at 9am on Friday 27th February and are priced from £75, for full details visit bst-hydepark.com RELEASED 27TH APRIL PHOtO by lindA broWnlee

you Are my sunshine!

sAFe In the

Many of us strive to achieve that golden summer glow not thinking twice about the abuse of UV rays to our skin, but the safety of tanning is very important.

tAnning without hArmFul uv rAys

how to tAn sAFely

so whAt is tAnning? The sun gives out UV rays which can affect the skin by making it look wrinkled and leathery and the build up of this damage can cause cancer. A tan works as a sort of shield from radiation, this makes the skin open up – the more exposed it is from the sun the darker the skin appears. the science: UVA and UVB are types of radiations linked to cancer.

One way to prevent the risk of cancer or sun damage is to wear sun block lotion. Even though it blocks out the sun it does allow some UV rays to penetrate the skin which gives a slight tan. Sun block should be applied every two hours or after entering water. the science: Sun block contains titanium dioxide which blocks out the UV rays.

There are an endless number of products you can use for a DIY tan. Self tanning lotions or sprays are two options for the perfect tan. Lotions can be used at home, applied evenly to the skin and spray tans are mainly done at salons where you’re asked to rotate the body and perform certain poses for the tan to be applied evenly. If you are scared of ending up with an uneven tan be sure to exfoliate before applying. the science: Self tanning products contain a chemical called dihdroxyaceton which dyes the dead skin cells. It also means self tanning lotions are temporary as the body sheds the dead tanned skin.

TiPS on HoW and WHen To Tan and WHaT To aVoid the UV radiation is at its highest between 10am–4pm. try tanning an hour everyday in order to minimize damage. the use of certain SPF15 or higher 52 mAyhem! | Spring 2015

tanning oils can intensify UV rays which can darken the skin faster. Avoid using tanning pills as they contain a chemical dye which overtime can turn

the skin orange and damage your liver. Also avoid excessive sunbed exposure as the chance of developing skin cancer can be increased by 75%.

So if you still desire that perfect tan for summer there are safe ways to achieve it. So be careful this summer and look after your skin.

spring BreAk the May spring break sees many holiday destinations finally stir to life after the slumber of the winter hibernation. For many people, especially those with children, the May spring break can be the perfect opportunity for a family holiday, for those who are unwilling to battle for beach space come the start of August. It can also be the perfect time of the year for those who are looking for a European city break before the heat, humidity and crowds make traversing some streets a torturous pursuit. We take you through five options; from family-fun retreats to couples in search of urban cool for a spring break to remember.

A Foodie tour oF sAn seBAstiAn Quick, the secret is almost out! With more Michelin stars per population than any other city on the planet it’s safe to assume that this beautiful Basque city really does know its cooking onions. With small bars and restaurants packed into dimly lit cobbled streets; the old town is the atmospheric cultural heart of the city. It’s also home to the best bar snacks in the world, the ubiquitous Pinxtos. These delicious fi nger foods are arrayed in beautiful technicolor for locals and tourists alike to wander from bar to bar eating and drinking the night away.

cAnAl hopping in chArming Belgium Located snugly between its more famous cousins; Bruges and Brussels, Ghent is a glorious town in its own right. With a huge university population, the city has an edge that Bruges lacks, while maintaining the canal side cafe culture and medieval architecture. Like most of the towns and cities in Belgium it’s unbelievably easy to get to; from St Pancras, jump on the Eurostar to Brussels and take the connection onwards to Ghent, arriving in around three hours – less time than travelling from London to Newcastle. 54 mAyhem! | Spring 2015

Brno: A lAid-BAck AlternAtive to prAgue The Czech Republic’s second city is almost a tantalising glimpse of what Prague was like before the tourist invasion meant prices skyrocketed. Maintaining the same feel with chocolate box houses and red tile roofs, gothic churches and handsome squares; it also has an air of difference which is hard to place your fi nger on. While Prague and the west of the country quaff their famous pilsners, the East are much more likely to be slurping on a vino or two with Monrovia, the surrounding region, home to some of Central Europe’s best vineyards.

An english vineyArd Bicycle tour Although English wine’s reputation is still much smaller than that of it’s more well-known European and New World cousins, it’s growing at lightning pace. With 470 vineyards covering a total of 1,884 hectares, it’s no surprise that total yearly production stands somewhere close to 4.45 million bottles! Despite this the mention of English wine still amusing the uninitiated, however areas such as Sussex continue to win awards. With the same soil composition as that of France’s Champagne region there are a whole host of vineyards that are open daily for visits, tastings and tours. What better reason to hire a bicycle and spend a few days drifting in between them all!

Quirky cAmping on the isle oF wight From secluded campsites with easy access to beaches ripe for a campfire and guitar, to the very best glamping, when it comes to quirky places to stay, the Isle of Wight seems to revel in its many options. From yurts to safari tents kitted out with range ovens and big comfy beds there is something for every budget and level of comfort.

goodWood racecourse Announces three FridAy nights dJs

returning for a fifth year with another three worldfamous dJs taking to the decks, Three friday nights will take Goodwood by storm in June 2015. Enjoy an exciting evening of quality horseracing followed by an open-air DJ set and a spectacular laser show. It’s an experience like no other. This year’s outstanding line-up features:

2mAnydJs (dJ set) FridAy 5 June

gorgon city (dJ set) FridAy 12 June

idris elBA FridAy 19 June

Described by zane Lowe as producing a “historic record,” 2manydjs have spent two decades travelling the world with their unique mash-ups and sublime remixes. Putting their own creative twists into a set, expect huge tracks as you’ve never heard them before. A wealth of experience playing to sell-out crowds gives this explosive Belgian act all the ingredients for a dynamite night on the decks.

Last year saw Gorgon City launch themselves onto the dance scene with ‘Ready For Your Love,’ a single that earned them a number four spot in the UK charts and was watched by 17.5 million (and counting) on YouTube. But this duo is far from a one-trick pony so expect to dance your socks off to original up-tempo electronic.

Eternally cool and with a CV which boasts sell-out DJ performances in Las Vegas, London and Ibiza, collaborations with Jay-z and four of his own hip hop EPs – not to mention a Golden Globe for his acting – Idris Elba is a man of many talents. His much-anticipated debut at Three Friday Nights will bring the series to a fitting fi nale.
