Travelling abroad for the holidays but don’t want to pay extra for hold luggage? Here’s how to make the most of your cabin bag allowance!

check those Dimensions First and foremost, check your airline’s website for the baggage restrictions. Large backpacks will serve you well but also small cases designed for overhead lockers prevent accidentally going over these dimensions. Also take advantage of the fact that most airlines consider your usual handbag/backpack separate to hand luggage which should allow you extra space.

lose the liquiDs Where possible, leave as many toiletries at home as you can. You can buy it all at your destination (or may even get it free if you’re staying in a hotel!). Airlines don’t permit any liquids over 100ml in the cabins, so if you insist on bringing a special product, invest in a small, plain container instead of your original bulky bottle as a very handy space-saver. These are available in most pharmacies or pound stores. You can also buy products in the airport if need be, once you have passed security.

bulk uP Wear your bulkiest clothes on the plane. Taking trainers and sandals? Wear the trainers on the plane. Going to a hot destination but have to take a jacket ‘just in case’? Wear it or carry it in your arms. Every little inch of extra volume helps!

but What if‌? We’re all guilty of it. Packing clothes for every imaginable condition. Maybe there’ll be a sudden monsoon. Or a heatwave. Or you’ll accidentally spill wine over that one outfi t or your shampoo’s exploded in your bag (another reason to avoid liquids!). But if you want to travel light, you need to focus on probabilities, not possibilities. Remember that you can improvise if need be, you don’t need one (or more!) outfi ts per day. Mix and match, get creative. No one will judge you for wearing something more than once.

Do you have‌? If you require things like hair dryers or any special equipment, always check with your destination to see if it’s available upon request fi rst. There’s nothing more frustrating than lugging things with you only to fi nd them waiting at the other end. Many budget hotels offer communal equipment which is kept at the front desk.

PResents of minD Don’t forget to leave room for anything you might want to bring back. Gifts and trinkets for friends and family or some souvenirs for yourself. If need be, you can always send yourself a package home and meet it on the other side!

written by Dave Wells

For so many people feelings of depression, anxiety or low mood can set in for all sorts of reasons. One individuals’ situation will be completely different to someone else’s. One thing is for sure though - by having an inactive lifestyle and unhealthy diet you can set yourself up to experience those kind of issues. 22 | Summer 2017

get active You don’t need to spend hours in the gym or pounding the streets to have a healthy lifestyle. Your body is made to move in lots of different ways - get active three or four times a week, for something like an hour at a time. Keep it fun and social - participate in exercise classes or take up a sport. Local clubs or centres have plenty to offer and they will be delighted to welcome people of any ability or skill level. Check out your local community centres, you might be surprised to see what’s going on just around the corner. Whatever you do, if your heart’s pumping and you look good and sweaty by the end, you’ve got it just about right.

eat Well Healthy diets are neither expensive nor diffi cult. You may hear about different dieting methods in the media or from friends, but don’t over complicate things. Cook meals from scratch. Eat plenty of vegetables. Consume a well balanced diet containing a variety of food types. It’s not hard to grill a piece of meat, steam some veggies or boil some potatoes.

fat Keep an eye on the fat you eat. While it’s true that eating fat is beneficial to a healthy diet, too much of it and of the wrong types is not so good. Avoid highly processed trans-fats as much as possible - things such as margarine and artificial cooking oils contain virtually no nutritional benefi t and do very little to help us feel full. Try and consume fats from healthier sources such as meat and fish, eggs and dairy, nuts, avocado or pure butter. These foods contain un-processed natural fats and have many other nutritional benefi ts that help us to feel good while satiating appetite.

sugaR Consider the amount of processed sugar you eat too. Sugar has been consistently linked to a wide variety of physical and mental health problems. It’s easy to over eat foods like chocolate and ice cream, so incorporate these kind of foods into your diet every now and again, not every night of the week. These foods are designed to make us feel good. So if you over eat them and as a result your health starts to diminish, you won’t feel good. It’s entirely possible to consume those foods as part of a healthy balanced diet. Don’t be daunted. It’s simple to have a healthy lifestyle consume a nutritious, balanced diet and stay active as much as you can. Do these two things and not only will you feel healthier, you’ll feel happier too.

irritabLe boWeL? Now this is a subject not to be laughed at! Around one in five suffer from it and it can have a hugely negative impact on people’s lives. Hopefully you’re not eating while you read this but, people can have bouts of diarrhea, stomach cramps, can feel bloated, can be constipated all very unhappy states of being. the meDical ReseaRch

Could how you think affect symptoms in a positive way? Could you imagine yourself healthier? Could you use your mind to improve an upset stomach or even alleviate the symptoms of Irritable Bowel Syndrome?

The National Institute for Clinical Excellence (NICE) and The British Medical Association (BMA) both recommend hypnotherapy to alleviate IBS symptoms. And clinical trials show that hypnosis can substantially improve the symptoms over an eight-course treatment plan, with benefits continuing for upto two years after treatment.

Well, surprisingly, your mind can actually have a huge impact on your health. IBS is one such problem which can benefit hugely and there is plenty of research and clinical trials to prove it. How on earth can your mind do it though?

iRRitable boWel synDRome anD hyPnotheRaPy Well, all that research and those clinical trials have been used with hypnotherapy. Now those two subjects together could strike fear into some, imaginations running wild with visions of being made to jump around like a rabbit or eat a raw onion thinking it’s an apple! That in itself could be a disaster for someone suffering from IBS! So let’s set the record straight and be clear what hypnotherapy actually is! Hypnosis is a naturally-occurring psychological and physiological state. It’s generally a collaborative process (you can practice Self Hypnosis). The therapist simply provides guidance to help people use their imagination, create positive emotions and rehearse different behaviours to make improvements in their life or, in this case, their gut.

Well here we are, spring already, eel and what you believe about yourself can with warmer weather on its way and holiday All good d in what happens to you, how planning. you treat How you feel and what you believe about yourself can unless it involves some pesky owbeyou are treated, andphobia how you deal with it. reflected in what happens tosuch you, how you treat as flying or spiders

Professor Peter Whorwell, Professor of Medicine and Gastroenterology at Manchester Royal Infirmary, has been researching gut-directed hypnosis for over 20 years and believes that IBS is ideal for treatment with hypnosis and has seen success rates of about 70%.

so hoW Does it WoRk? The commonly used term is ‘guided imagery’. The hypnotherapist will take groups into hypnosis and then use all sorts of imagery to help alleviate the symptoms. For example, if you imagined a storm representing your stomach or gut and then slowly and easily a gentle wind (no pun intended, honestly) starts to blow away the storm, creating a calm environment, perhaps even a cooling soothing environment. By focusing the mind in this way it does actually create change in the body. How would you assess the man, Lewis Hamilton? An enigma? No, but getting there. Someone who splits opinion? Yes, without question. The best driver of a generation? Undoubtedly. No matter what else he does in his career, Hamilton has dreamed, worked and succeeded, and for that, we should all be proud.

“I’D GIVe It All Up IN orDer to stAy At tHe top of My GAMe” As a F1 driver draped in the luxurious trappings of everything the playboy millionaire lifestyle offers – the yachts, the Monaco pad, more diamonds than a Hatton Garden trader and the odd fast car hidden under a dust sheet – you’d forgive Lewis Hamilton for sitting back, pouring a G&T and counting his pile of cash. But despite outward impressions – see any paparazzi photo of the suave 32-year-old taken in the last decade – Hamilton cares less than we think about the showbiz side of the sport. Yes, he likes to mix ruthless acceleration with an eye on style, but this is a man more driven by success than ever before. “I’d give it all up in order to stay at the top of my game,” he offers. “Racing and winning is the world to me and the other stuff will always be secondary.”

Hamilton has spoken at length in the past about trying to find a balance, and he admits that even just by stepping out into a world away from the track, he is different to most drivers. “The lifestyle that I live is definitely different to the others. But who says it has to be the way they are doing things? My style works perfectly for me.” The fact is, Hamilton’s career is one long success story after another, and donning an YSL suit for a fashion show doesn’t appear to have done him any harm in his pursuit of being the greatest driver ever. As well as standing the only man in F1 history to have won at least one race every season since making his top-level debut in 2007, he was the first British driver to win consecutive titles, picking up a BBC Sports Personality of the Year gong along the way. In recent weeks, he further cemented his reputation as the nation’s greatest motorsport maestro – on home soil, no less – with a record equalling fifth win at Silverstone.

“My style works perfectly for Me”

That recent victory also put the Stevenageborn speedster right back in the running for the F1 Driver’s Championship, with the Ferrari vs Mercedes feud set to take a few more twists and turns before the season’s conclusion at Abu Dhabi in November. While the Silverstone win sets the pint-sized powerhouse up for a potential fourth Driver’s Championship, it’s no secret that the flash and occasionally petulant driver can be somewhat of a handful at times. “It’s just not in my nature not to want to fight and battle on every straight, every corner,” he admits. “I don’t really think you can be in this sport without there being a fiery, ruthless streak. You’d just be rubbish on the track,” he laughs. During his career Hamilton has never strayed too far from controversy, be it his wellpublicised spats with former teammate Nico Rosberg, or his recent on-track fracas with Vettel in Azerbaijan. In spite of these occasional colourful moments, Hamilton is undoubtedly the most talented British racing driver of his generation – and is in no mood to entertain the notion that his lavish lifestyle off the track impacts his work on it.

There’s a lot said way there is always going to be a combination that sees about the money, about how competitive it is, about front page headlines. shave! written by eDWaRD couZens-lake

Attention all men. Are you still persisting with the ineffective and entirely unsuitable for purpose electric razors when having a shave? You are? Well read on. The only way to have a shave in the mornings is the honourable and very masculine method of wet shaving, i.e. using hot water, a flannel, shaving gel and a proper razor. Your ever rugged Mayhem! looks at the only way to shave. steP 1

steP 3

Th e main essentials to a perfect shave are water and warmth. Soak a folded fl annel or small towel in hot water and wrap it around the face for 15 seconds. Th is warms and softens the skin in readiness for shaving. Th ose who desire a smooth shave might wish to apply a pre-shave lotion to protect the skin as well as helping the razor to glide smoothly across the face.

Make sure you use a sharp blade which you warm under hot running water. Shave with the grain of your beard and, in awkward areas such as the chin and under the nose, move the blade sideways across the growth. Try not to shave against the grain as this pulls the skin in the wrong direction causing small cuts and ‘grazing’ to the skin and is the most common cause of ‘razor burn’, ingrown hairs and shaving rash.

steP 2 Apply shaving cream/gel using a shaving brush. A good one will lift and moisten the beard, preparing it for the shave. Always use a quality razor with the sharpest blades available. Cheap disposable razors have low-grade steel blades that bend when shaving. You may have a hankering for the ‘real deal’ of a cut throat razor but best to avoid these unless you’re a professional, an expert wet shaver, or Sweeney Todd.

steP 4 After shaving rinse thoroughly with cool water to close the pores and pat dry with a soft towel. A good wet shave exfoliates and cleanses the face, leaving smooth new skin and a healthy, clean appearance. Newly exfoliated skin needs to be protected from the elements, so for healthy skin it’s important to use a good quality after-shaving moisturizer or balm – try out a few to see which ones suit your skin the best.

There are less mind-numbing activities than watching Peppa Pig with kids on a Saturday morning. Granted, children can be a delight in themselves, but their choice in television has yet to season, so how about a kids programme that mum and dad can enjoy? We bring you some of the best and funniest shows you can responsibly watch alongside your precious darlings while keeping their innocent minds and your sanity unharmed.

aduLt tv written by Jessica megan

sPongebob squaRePants Everyone is familiar with the delightful yellow sea sponge and his starfish friend Patrick, but play closer attention. You can almost imagine the writers behind the hit series stifl ing their giggles when they slipped some seriously risqué jokes into the beloved kids show, for example the time when Gary the Snail walks in on Spongebob watching – ahem – “the sports channel,” or the time he was blowing balloons that looked suspiciously like condoms. Or that other time when Plankton had to steer Spongebob the right way by clarifying “Be assertive, not Insertive!” Ahem. Still, these things seem to be lost on the show’s target demographic, so feel free to enjoy these hidden comedic treasures.

aDventuRe time A cult classic on the internet and peppered with plenty of excellent double sided jokes, Adventure Time follows the story of a boy named Finn and his bizarre shaped dog Jake on their adventures in the land of Oo. Alongside battling powerful forces, the key characters hit their audience with genuinely helpful life and dating advice, “Man, you’re letting your brain dial turn your fear volume up!” and “Suckin’ at something is the first step to being sorta good at somethin’!” Additionally, Princess Bubblegum and Marceline the Vampire Queen are embroiled in a secret/not so secret affair with numerous hints to their past relationship throughout the show, a sub plot that drives fans into a frenzy due to its unprecedented adorableness. In the episode ‘Burning Low’ Jake describes the tiers of dating, “after a while you make it to Tier 8, where you get to touch her horn.” Please.

the RegulaR shoW Th is American Animated TV series stars two friends, a racoon named Rigby and a Blue Jay named Mordecai who usually slack off in search of adventure and mischief. Since it is one of our picks for this piece, you know The Regular Show is packed with elusive hilarities and animated oddities that both you and the mini versions of you can enjoy. Although it does scrape the barrel with ‘ball’ jokes at times, the childish daftness charms it’s audience enough to laugh or at the very least crack a smile. “This ballroom used to host the most elegant balls in its day.” “Were they big?” “Oh they were huge!” Jokes like these may not be the height of comedic sophistication, but that’s not necessarily what we’re looking for. Cartoons that make easy family watching with a few casual adult jokes slipped in here and there to ease the irksome monotony of its younger animated colleagues such as Peppa Pig or Dora the Explorer are most certainly welcome.

PoWeRPuff giRls Originally entitled Whoopass Stew! Th e Powerpuff Girls rose to fame in 1998 with its offi cial debut as a “Cartoon Cartoon” (coined by Cartoon Network as a reference to cartoons that made the programme). Th ere are several things about the programme that didn’t necessarily go unnoticed, but was certainly given the go ahead with a fat thumbs up from the producers. Let’s start with Miss Bellum’s “bodaciousness” as a healthy starting point, with her masses of red hair, fabulous body and THAT voice, nobody can deny Miss Bellum was the hottest Cartoon network character on the scene. In one particular episode, she helps the Mayor sharpen his pencil after he snaps it due to being all hot and bothered under the collar. In another episode the Powerpuff Girls fi nd a squirrel, who they decide to name. Buttercup argues that they should call the squirrel Bruce, “You can’t call her that, it’s a boy’s name!” retorts Bubbles. “Well, how do you know it’s a girl?” “Squirrels EAT nuts, stupid!” No explanation necessary, I should hope.

It’s all around us, it’s natural and it’s still relatively cheap. And versatile? There are 1001 things you can use it for. But, above all: it’s good for us, an ancient and most pure of healing elixirs. What is it? Water! So valuable and perhaps the most important natural resource on the planet – which is nearly 75% water anyway – yet one we all take for granted. Mayhem! takes a refreshing swig and proclaims water to be H2 Whoa!

h2o heaLs! Do you DRink enough?

Health experts unanimously concur that we all need to be drinking at least 2.5 litres of water a day (that’s a little over 4 pints) just to keep ourselves hydrated. The human body is 75% water (the same as the earth – coincidence?) and, if we drop that margin by just 2% we become dehydrated. How many of these symptoms are familiar to you? Tiredness, Headaches, Aching Joints, Urinary Infections, Slow Metabolism, Low Immunity, Stress, Weight Gain, Indigestion, Dark/Smelly Urine. All can be a sign of dehydration – which, if taken to extreme levels, can be very serious from a health point of view. That 2.5 litres a day therefore, is quite important and should, however possible, become part of your day to day living.

but i DRink at least that amount of tea/coffee/ Juices/beeR etc! Many other drinks have potentially harmful additives – caffeine in tea and coffee; sugar in juices and fizzy drinks and, of course, alcohol in your pint of beer. Water is not without its own possible dodgy ingredients of course – but it is, by far, the best and most healthy option.

36 | Summer 2017

so it’s a liquiD equivalent of taking ‘five a Day’?

Yes. Just as it’s crucial for us to look to eat at least fi ve portions of fresh fruit and vegetables every day, we should be looking to add drinking enough water to that daily regime.

can i take it all at once? No, this can be extremely dangerous in some cases and will make you feel, at the very least, bloated and uncomfortable. Th e best thing to do is to sip your way through the recommended amount slowly and steadily throughout the day.

What else Do i neeD to knoW? Feeling thirsty is the first symptom of mild dehydration – obviously! However, feeling tired may also be a sign that you are not drinking enough. Just a 2% drop in your daily recommended hydration can slow down recall, reactions and cause difficulty in focusing on tasks. But cracking open another can of Red Bull might just be the worst thing you can do as far as your body is concerned – sip away steadily throughout the day to avoid the chance of this happening. As with all matters relating to personal health and well being, this article is for entertainment purposes only. if you would like further advice on diet and liquid intakes, always consult a qualifi ed health professional.

FED UP GRAFTING FOR ‘THE MAN’?

Go seLf-empLoyed! written by elaine hutton

Do you like your own company (a bit too much)? Do you talk to yourself a lot? Do you have self-control? Do you have a talent for any of the top self-employed jobs… • Writer/Blogger • Content creator • YouTuber • Virtual Assistant • Translator • Survey taker • Transcripter • Web site tester

• Direct Sales • Teaching • Telesales • Voiceover • Designer • CV writer • Financial forecaster • Fundraiser

…then becoming self-employment could be the future for you! 38 | Summer 2017

Woah Wah! Employers and employees benefit from home-based employment. Companies saving on overhead costs and workers save on commuting and they boost their well-being with flexible working conditions. When people get a taste for WAH, they can often go freelance. Freelancers are the fastest growing group in the UK labour market. The self employment boom began in the early 2000s and has risen by 80%. The growing ‘Gig economy’ now means 16% of the UK workforce are working for themselves, that’s 4.7 million self employed people in Britain versus 5.3m in the public sector.

hoW DiD the selfemPloyeD boom haPPen?

aRe you stRong (mentally, emotionally)?

Answer: the good old internet. Most home-based or remote working jobs require a computer. With ‘jobs for life’ a thing of the past, more talented people are being laid off and chancing their skills in the comfort of their own home. We value our work life balance more today than we did in the power suited, shoulder padded 80s & 90s.

Among the most unusual dangers of WAH alone are the health and safety risks. I fell over wearing slipper socks on wooden floors while carrying lunch in a rush and I have fallen down the stairs (again, in a rush to get to the door). No one is there is pick you up and comfort you.

anD the DoWn siDe…?

Don’t let the post man or any neighbours know you WAH or you will become the local drop off point for your street and have daily delivery interruptions. An aggressive stressed out driver was banging on my front window one second after he rang the bell recently. When I opened the door to his red faced, red eyed, red t-shirt he shouted “I have 100 deliveries today I can’t spend 3-4 mins on each one!”. Simply smile, sign, shut the door, return to work (with some cheese from fridge).

There’s no sick pay. There’s no holiday pay. There’s no one to talk to. There’s a lot of distractions at home…

so, can you go selfemPloyeD? ask youRself these questions: Are you disciplined? Working alone is daily test of your will power and self-control. Boris Johnson said working from home is just an excuse to keep going back to the fridge for more cheese.

aRe you Patient? aRe you PRivate?

Are you house proud? On busy days, you’ve just got to leave that cleaning, washing and cooking and get on with earning your crust. Are you dedicated? You may have to sit and stare at a screen all day (better at home than in an office, right?). Are you body conscious? You may have to miss the gym to meet your deadlines and your butt only gets bigger sitting around all day. Are you male or female? Girls do self-employment best, apparently. Most self employed part time workers are women in their 30s perhaps because, yes, Mums still do the majority of childcare and because, yes, men still get paid more than women and because girls find it easier to stay focused. Why? We don’t have willies so wanking isn’t a constant temptation when we’re left alone - sorry boys but apparently it’s a (big?) distraction for most of you!

be DisciPlineD Luckily day time TV is tripe: Jeremy Kyle, antique hunts, DIY and property stuff. Stay off Facebook, Snapchat, WhatsApp, You Tube. Put your phone out of reach and get on with it! Good luck!

get moRe sleeP Not sleeping properly can not only affect our energy levels and appearance but also our brain functions. Getting enough Zzz’s can help support learning and memory as well as regulate our mood, appetite and libido. When looking at the brain of someone who is sleep-deprived, scientists have found reduced metabolism and blood flow in multiple brain regions.*

be social Making friends and socialising has a great impact on our emotional wellbeing as well as brain functions. How? When speaking to people and building relationships you have to pay attention to what they say and then use your memory to recall information to be able to hold a conversation.

Pick uP a foReign language Did you know that learning a foreign language can actually make your brain bigger?** It can also boost your creativity and ability to focus. But most importantly, learning another language gives you ‘a cognitive reserve’ that helps to protect against the changes that can occur during ageing. Speaking a second language throughout your life could delay the onset of Alzheimer’s. Studies show that people who speak two languages may develop dementia more than four years later than those who speak only one language! Language learning leads to more neural connections. More neural stability and more resilience to neural damage.

staRt knitting Apparently knitting is set to be the new baking. It isn’t just something elderly women do and it has recently become popular with celebrities. Apart from helping you to relax it can also boost your mental health as it stimulates almost all of your brain. When knitting, you need to stay focused, plan what you’re doing in advance and also use visual information and coordinate your movements.

teach youR boDy a neW skill Walking in a new park or taking a dance class can fi re up new neural pathways that keep your brain in touch. Remembering steps in a dance is a workout for your brain – learning the flow and rhythm of the music stimulates cognitive activity while learning and performing the steps is great for both your memory and your physical fi tness. Active learning is the perfect complement for jigsaws, Sudoku and crosswords.

set youRself challenges Counting backwards from 100 in 2s, 3s or 4s is a good one, and you can make it harder by doing something else at the same time, such as tapping your foot. Or try the ‘tip-of-thetongue’ game – think of a theme, such as ‘food’, and name as many items relevant to the theme as you can in one minute. Most people can do 30. Can you double it?

WRite things DoWn

using music

Studies have shown that the act of writing something down forces your brain to recall it in a way that typing on your computer or phone does not. ***

Research suggests that playing a musical instrument when you are older can give you a 36% lowered risk of developing dementia and cognitive damage. Can’t play an instrument? Don’t worry, singing can help you remember words easily too. Th ink how easily you can remember the words to songs that you sang years ago – and yet how much harder it often is to remember a poem or piece of prose that isn’t set to music.

Who doesn’t love laughing? It not only lifts your mood but it’s also a great calorie burner. However, researchers have also discovered that laughing can also minimise the damage that stress hormone cortisol can cause (it damages certain neurons in our brain and affects learning ability as well as memory).****

rehominG a rescue pet

For many of us our pets are like a member of the family, which is why choosing what animal to get and where to get it from is a big decision. But why buy when you can instead make a donation and adopt an animal that is homeless? Not sure where to start with the adoption process? Read on to find out how to pick the best choice for you.

written by Rachel baRR

Do youR homeWoRk Before you decide on a particular animal or breed research them thoroughly fi rst to ensure you’re a good match for each other. Th is could include being good with children or a certain temperament. When adopting a pet, they may have already been through some tough times so it wouldn’t be fair to expose them to further hardship if you didn’t get on and had to return them. Pets can offer us so much, they deserve our care and respect. So even if you have had animals before, review your current situation before making a fi nal choice.

be Realistic Introducing a new pet to your home will be exciting, rewarding and, at times, challenging. It may also take quite a while for your new pet to settle in. So consider the time you will be able to spend with along with day-to-day life. A Husky puppy may look cute but when fully grown will need a lot of walking. We at Fareham and Waterlooville branch of Cats Protection aim to help as many needy cats and kittens within our area as we possibly can. We take in cats from various situations; some are strays, some cannot remain with their families due to house moves, new babies or additional pets. When taking in a new cat or kitten our first port of call is one of our local vets for a thorough check-up and, if no vaccination records are available, a new course must be commenced. If unneutered, we arrange that as well as microchipping. Therefore, our adopters have peace of mind as well as one month’s free Pet Plan insurance which we recommend they continue. Our adoption fees make this a very economical package. We also trap, neuter and return feral cats to stables and farms which allows the colony to continue without the worry of ever-increasing numbers. We are always in need of reliable volunteers in particular in the field of fundraising and helping out with vet runs etc.

bLues for the boozer The rise of the gastropub has left many wondering what happened to the traditional hitching post for a cold pint with friends and, depending on the night of the week, a naff covers band drowning out any attempt at conversation, that is if you’re not all sat looking at your phones and being antisocial in the face of it all. What happened, many a seasoned boozehound may well wonder as they sink another pint. Let the landlord of history be your guide as we look back at a simpler time, a better time‌

What have the romans ever drunk for us? Quite a bit is the obvious answer! But perhaps the greatest legacy of their mighty empire lies not in sanitation or public health but in the beginnings of pub culture on these shores. Though ale has been quaffed since the Bronze Age, it was the tabernae lining the famed Roman roads that served as the ancestor of the modern day drinking establishment.

They were part of the early phase of retail culture, selling food and wine among other items and indeed services - historian Titus Livius wrote of them that they proved essential in gauging the mood of the people in the eyes of the general Marcus Furius Camilus, a driving force in the expansion of what was then a republic.

A little later on came the Anglo-Saxons, who applied similar principles to the taberna in founding their own alehouses, which grew from people’s actual houses and were often manned by an alewife. She proved the forerunner of the modern day barmaid in a sense, as well as serving as landlord - women dominating the trade to the extent that records from shortly before the Black Death indicate, it was solely the preserve of the fairer sex. The popularity of the brew itself may have something to do with the frankly terrible quality drinking water available to drinkers of the period, not that a higher standard in the modern age has stopped us swapping the cold tap for a cold pint over many an English summer?

Pub Rock No, not that sinking feeling as you walk home after one too many. Pubs have long been a hotbed of song- the fi rst record of what’s known as a drinking song, which should require little explanation, hails from the eleventh century. The likes of 99 Bottles Of Beer and Whiskey In The Jar (as popularised by Th in Lizzy) have their roots in a folk tradition which grew up around the places beer and indeed whiskey are still downed today, things coming full circle in the early Seventies both here and in Australia as the likes of Dr Feelgood, Ducks Deluxe and Ian Dury’s fi rst group Kilburn and the High Roads followed in the footsteps of Americans Eggs Over Easy, who became the house band at the Tally Ho in Kentish Town (London). In the merry old land of Oz, extensions to opening hours and the repeal of the Sunday Observance Act allowed the likes of Billy Thorpe and the Aztecs, Blackfeather and Buffalo to do much the same for our Aussie cousins. Cheers!

so What haPPeneD? Worth pondering over your own choice of alcoholic beverage. As traditional pubs up and down the country close their doors and the survivors embrace restaurant-standard food alongside the amber nectar, what caused their slow decline? It’s estimated that the slump began in around 1982, with various theories put forward. 2007 saw the smoking ban

introduced - which may have alienated those who liked a cigarette as much as a pint. With alcohol itself available in many supermarkets and cheaper than nipping to the local for many in the current economic climate, another nail is hammered into the coffi n of the pub. Sad, is it not, that the only communities where it is still a focal point seem to be Walford and Weatherfield? The Queen Vic & Rovers Return are, it seems, immune from such concerns. Incidentally the oldest real world boozer still standing is thought to be Ye Olde Fighting Cocks in St Albans, though several others have claims. The controversy around the Cocks - stop sniggering in the snug seems to revolve around exactly when it dates from. First licensed in 1756, with Historic England describing it as having the appearance of a Sixteenth Century building, its name comes from a certain popular sport of the period as opposed to odd goings on in the gents. Bouts between fighting fowl are said to have taken place there since 1800, with PETA so appalled by that legacy that they wrote to both the landlord and owner Mitchells & Butlers to request a name change. Which was then swiftly declined! Other olde world pubs to have come forward with their own attempts to wobble unsteadily towards a place in the record books include Bolton’s Ye Olde Man & Scythe and Ye Olde Trip to Jerusalem, for those wishing to make a pilgrimage to Nottingham to pay homage. The ‘’ye olde’’ prefi x in itself dates from the Victorian era, while pub signs were made a legal requirement by King Richard in 1393 with the rather fearsome proclamation that “Whosoever shall brew ale in the town with intention of selling it must hang out a sign, otherwise he shall forfeit his ale.”. Th is was for the benefi t of ale inspectors, who would take a look around premises as well as sampling the brew from within. One of these lucky chaps was John Shakespeare, whom arguably one of the country’s greatest playwrights called “Dad”. From Milk and Alcohol to the milk of human kindness - “Yet doe I feare thy Nature, It is too full o’ th’ Milke of humane kindnesse.” Time, gentlemen, please!
