How much you would pay for a fungus? You might be surprised just how much some people really will. Rare truffles like the Italian White Alba can be sourced around the world and found among the roots of trees. In huge demand truffles are proving harder to fi nd which is reflected in the price, although those who can afford it are still willing to pay for this fabulous fungus.
DENSUKE bLACK WATERMELON Save your time searching the fruit aisles for this rare watermelon. The black skinned fruit grows on the island of Hokkaido in Japan. Sweeter than your typical watermelon available pretty much anywhere, the Densuke Black Watermelon is in high demand, but with a harvest only gathering around 20 pieces a time, you have to be very lucky and very rich to get your hands on one.

THE MATSUTAKE MUSHROOM Mushrooms can be picked up a pound a punnet in most stores but for the Matsutake mushroom you won’t be getting such a good deal. The most expensive mushroom in the world has previously been found on a number of continents including North America, Asia and europe although it is now proving incredibly hard to fi nd. The Matsutake mushroom is especially sought after by the Chinese and Japanese who are particularly enamoured by its spicy-aromatic odour.

It’s widely known that Caviar isn’t cheap, but this is a little over egged! Almas Caviar is sourced from Iran, and the rareness of this particular variety is what makes it so expensive,not to £15,000 mention the 24karat gold packaging it comes in. Thoughts of splashing this much cash on something that isn’t even cooked and will be gone in seconds is only an achievable privilege for the very wealthy.

If you have concerns about your health always seek your GP’s advice before starting any treatment or taking medications, they know best – and it’s (still!) free. Mayhem! offers a few tips regarding three of the most common ‘complaints’ you’re likely to encounter in the coming months… COLDS
HEADACHE
Got one? Ahh, bless. If you do go to the Doc, don’t expect antibiotics – they’re not prescribed for colds.
Stress headaches are very common. They usually start at the back of the head and neck and work their insidious way around. A mild soluble painkiller will usually do the trick. But make sure that you drink plenty of water daily, as dehydration can cause particularly nasty headaches. The recommended ‘dose’ of water is eight glasses a day, but steadily sip your way through them rather than gulping down three or four at once.
He or she will probably recommend that you keep warm, chill out a bit, keep hydrated (water is best) and take a mild soluble painkiller to relieve the symptoms – pop into your nearest chemist and ask the pharmacist for some advice. Or take the holistic approach and try not to get one in the first place – vitamin C supplements are available at all good chemists; likewise you can ask about a zinc supplement or echinacea.

INSOMNIA Make sure your caffeine intake isn’t too high! Loads of drinks are
loaded with the stuff, including energy drinks and coffee – so, if you’re a slave to Red Bull, bear in mind it may keep you awake all night. Have a routine and don’t work right up to the time that you hit the hay. Give yourself at least an hour between switching the TV off and crashing out. The best late night drink is probably a hot chocolate – if your Nan treated you to this when you were little it was probably because she didn’t want to hear another squeak from you until the next morning!

HIV is most commonly passed on via sex without a condom or by sharing infected needles, syringes or other injecting drug equipment. Over 90,000 people live in the U.k. with HIV and most of them don’t know it. World Aids Day brings HIV to the forefront of everyone’s mind with honesty, kindness and most importantly a laugh. While fundraising you can enjoy yourself and help out an important cause. There are activities from crazy cake baking competitions to the silly-sideways sponsored runs. You can fundraise any day of the year in whatever way you like but the 1st December is all about making people aware of HIV and being safe.

Most people are unaware that they have contracted the disease because they haven’t been checked. It’s a simple procedure now, where all you have to do is give a saliva sample as quick as a brief snog in a club. From a young age we have been told the same line ‘better to be safe than sorry’ alongside ‘don’t take candy from a stranger’. So it’s time to be safe and get a quick check, there’s no week- long wait for the results and as soon as you know you can get all the support you need. Grab yourself the most stylish accessory around, red crystal bling in the form of a brooch to remind the world to always be safe. Th is is a worldwide opportunity to unite in the fight against HIV and to follow it on by raising awareness of HIV all year round. ANTON With challenging skiing, reliable snow, legendary après-ski and first-class cuisine, it’s easy to see why St Anton in the Tirol region is regarded as one of the best ski resorts in the world. The whole Arlberg ski area covers 340km of slopes and 200km of off-piste run accessible by 94 cablecars and lifts. Offering some of the world’s finest off-piste skiing, St Anton is the Holy Grail for expert skiers thanks to the sheer diversity and consistently high snowfall records.
SOLDEU The Grandvalira ski area boasts 210km of varied terrain to keep even the most advanced skier or boarder happy. With wide-open, cruisy runs, fantastic off-piste areas and steep black runs to really test your skills, it’s defi nitely one to try if you like a challenge. Not only that, but the après-ski scene in Soldeu is second to none.
Best for ski luxury KITZbüHEL With its strong skiing heritage spanning 120 years, kitzbühel is one of the most cosmopolitan resorts in the Alps with a wonderful, cobbled old town, great hotels, award-winning restaurants, cosy cafés and trendy bars. There is great intermediate terrain but possibly kitzbühel’s best kept secret is the amount of accessible off-piste terrain, a whopping 230km2/56,800 acres of hidden routes and untracked backcountry. Of course, there’s also the most famous 3.3km stretch of snow in the world, the Streif.

ever heard of a Swishing Party? Well, a Swishing Party is a charitable event where you invite friends and family to bring their unwanted bits and pieces, and simply swap! This guilt-free way of shopping is a great excuse to get rid of stuff that you might have lying around in your home and whatever doesn’t get ‘swished’ goes to the hosts chosen charity.

Literally anything, it can range from clothes and shoes to travel cots and CD players, the sky is the limit. Simply go through your cupboards and wardrobes to dig out things you don’t use anymore. Remember, one mans junk is another mans treasure!
Simply create a Facebook page and invite as many people as you like. If you want to be super organised, you could ask your guests to drop off their stuff before the party so you can organise everything. On the day of the event just put out boxes displaying the sizes so guests can simply swap and swish. This guilt-free way of shopping is an excellent excuse to get together a group of mates and have some fun.
WHAT CHARITy? The majority of charity shops or collection services are grateful, big or small, local or national, so anything that doesn’t get swapped gets bagged up and donated.

Lily James is on a voyage of self-discovery – it started at Downton Abbey, has taken in princesses and extraterrestrial life sources, and ends on the streets of London doing selfies… but all in a day’s work for one of the country’s most talked about rising stars, as Mayhem! discovers.

It’s an emotional and resilient role that sees the main characters – Churchill is immaculately played by Gary Oldman – build into a stirring fi nale, the outcome of which we know all too well. “It was a gripping role and one I found so seductive,” she says. “The subject matter was, of course, so poignant and so pivotal to who we are now, and to do the story justice was a huge challenge for me.” “These are the roles I really love to get my teeth into, too. They are about bringing real emotion and depth to what is largely a lot of narrative and facial expression – they are the really challenging projects.” Outside of the film world, the challenges for Lily are to retain a sense of anonymity, though the actress admits it’s one she’s not winning, even if a lot of her fans are slow on the uptake. “I'm probably still most recognised because of Cinderella,” she says, referring back to the 2015 film she starred in alongside Cate Blanchett and Helena Bonham Carter, “so most of my fans are kids. But I love talking to them – they usually come close to ask me if fairy tales are true and I answer ‘yes’,” she laughs.

It's also difficult to be away from home a lot, but I’m very lucky to have this and I want to do every role justice.”

You got an iPad for Christmas?! Good for you! Why don’t you post a photo of it on your Facebook so we all know about it? Or better yet leave the empty box in your recycling bin so we can tell exactly where you live too. You wouldn’t leave your mobile phone on display in your car, so don’t advertise all your lovely new gifts to criminals. Whether it’s through a window or through a computer screen, drawing attention makes you a target.
Fitting a security alarm in your house is a sure way to catch any unwanted visitors to your house (not including annoying relatives at festive parties, sorry). To protect your home from intruders the alarm doesn’t even necessarily need to go off. The device itself on the outside of the property is enough to deter criminals. If you’re worried about actually installing the device, simply buy a ‘security system installed’ sign. A ‘beware of the dog’ sign can be helpful, but burglars are also aware that if you have a pet, you probably don’t have a security alarm as your furry friend would set it off.
NEED TO KNOW You may have been waiting for your trip to the Maldives all year, but as far as anyone should know, you’re stuck in Blighty. Signs of an empty house include piled up post in the porch and an uncleared driveway in snowy weather. If you can, enlist a friend to pick up your post, move your car periodically and keep your driveway tidy. Also don’t change your answer phone message to let people know you’re not at home. For trips to the shops or evening out, ensure all doors are locked and think about leaving a couple of lights and the TV or radio on. Although you may just be popping out for fi ve minutes, late or in a mad rush, is leaving the window open really worth it?
EXpOSURE Although it’s cold outside, some winter pruning can have practical as well as cosmetic benefi ts. Large bushes and trees give trespassers something to hide behind, especially near doors and windows. Try to keep all entrances to your property clear, not forgetting the front gate and cellar hatches. At the bottom of the garden, your shed can be an afterthought when it comes to security. But this can be a jackpot for burglars who could utilise unsecured tools to help them gain access to your home. If you’re using the shed to hide larger gifts make sure you have a hefty padlock, or somebody else could be getting their hands on them.

“The simple way to get an answer is to put all the conflict and separation to one side” Stormzy by name, stormy by nature, even those of us not in tune with the inner working of the grime and urban music scenes had to be impressed by the way the 24-year-old South Londoner stepped up to the plate in 2017. Already building a successful and dominant brand through music and fashion, the microphone controller has softened his appeal in recent months by revealing an altogether more empathetic side, one that’s not typically synonymous with a scene that glorifies violence and accentuates race boundaries. “I think there comes a time to slow all that down,” said Stormzy in the wake of the Grenfell Tower tragedy back in June, where 71 people lost their lives. “We’ve seen some terrible things happen this year, and in terms of Grenfell, people wanted answers.” “The simple way to get an answer is to put all the confl ict and separation to one side; to sit down and try to communicate clearly so that we might all move forward together.” Fronting the charity record that leapt to the top of the charts – in the process raising a six-figure sum for those immediately impacted by the disaster – Stormzy admits events created a movement that must be taken forward. “For all those died and for those still suffering, it’s all about making change happen. If we don’t do that it will all have been a missed opportunity to get some fairness back. There are people who have suffered enough and deserve better, and that’s all we want – fairness.”
As an ambassador for a generation, Stormzy – real name Michael ebenazer kwadjo Omari Owuo Jr – probably couldn’t be better positioned. A giant of the British music scene, he regularly spas with the likes of Adele and ed Sheeran, is buddies with Simon Cowell following a successful judging cameo on X Factor, and at 6ft 5” stands tall and imposing – his is a voice to be heard. His new album Gang Signs & Prayer is rich in production, messages and values, and appraises society as well as attempting to make good some of the artist’s early misdemeanours in life. “The main thing with me is my young black kings,” he told The Guardian. “And this ain’t to ostracise young black women or old white men, or Asians, it’s not to ostracise anyone. It’s just to say, ‘okay, young black men in my country, when it comes to who is going to achieve, you are always the very last.’ So I need to talk to my young black kings, because I’m one of you, we who are always last.” “And I say to them, ‘You are sick, you’re nang, you can do this. You’re better than anything anyone’s ever told you that you are. You’re just as powerful as me. You’re just as sick as me. You are just as ambitious, and you can be just as creative and as incredible and as amazing as me, Kanye West, Drake, Frank Ocean, all these people that you see. You can do that.’” And this all fi ts – there is a still a brazen belief in success for others as well as his own. Stormzy’s is a rallying cry for young people to get out there and achieve, a nod towards megalomania and a desire to be the very best he himself aspires to be.

“I fi nd it strange and uncomfortable to aim for anything less than the greatest,” he admits. “That doesn’t even make sense for me, that. If I was going to be an engineer or I was going to be a baker or I was going to be a fi reman, why would I not aim to eventually be the greatest at my job? I’ve never understood why I should just try and be the best rapper in London, or even the best rapper in the UK. I don’t want to be the best rapper in the UK. I want to be the best artist in the UK. ” “That takes my competitors from 20 people to 100 people, because now they’re indie bands, female singers, soul singers, legends, rock icons that I’m competing with. In my head I’m like, ‘Why can’t I compete with them? Why can’t Stormzy from south London do that as well?’” His latest single Blinded by Your Grace Pt. 2 proved a seductive soulful shift from the shouty vibes of earlier releases, and marks a potential turning point for an artist who has divided opinion with bullish and fiery behave both in person and on social media.

“In music, we are all evolving, all trying new things and seeking out different sounds,” he says. “I’m glad I’ve got enough ideas, voices and inspirations to be able to put music out that hits a number of different ideas.” Certainly, the fusion of gangland and gospel is an attractive shift in a record industry that again threatens to fall into a trap of being defi ned by the singer-songwriter generation. “I don’t pay that much attention to what other people are doing,” he continues. “For me it’s all about the sounds I’m putting out and the music I am making.” “Of course I have maximum respect for my peers, but it has to be about what I’m doing, not me in relation to others.” “I’m lucky to be where I am now with my career,” he continues. “I hustled and struggled, then everything just happened at the right time. It was all God’s timing, but my work. God, my family and being real are the most important things to me. Everything else comes second.”

HOW WAS bRAILLE INVENTED? Louis Braille developed the communication system in 1824, aged only 15. Having been blind since the age of five, Braille studied at the National Institute for Blind Youth in Paris, where he learnt ‘night writing’, a form of signalling which uses touch instead of sight. He simplified and adapted this method, and Braille was born.
Thursday 4th January 2018 is World Braille Day – a hugely significant day for the two million+ people in the UK who suffer from sight loss and rely on Braille to help them go about their lives. WRITTEN BY LUCy NObLE
toucHY feelY WHAT IS bRAILLE?
Braille is a means of communication for people who are blind or poor of sight. It uses a system of raised dots, which can be used anywhere that’s within arm’s reach; for example in books, magazines or menus, on doors or signposts. each Braille character is made up of six dot positions. Some dots are raised and some are not, and each character has a unique pattern of dots which denote its letter, contraction of letters, or punctuation. The reader runs their fingertips over the dots and feels the message instead of seeing it. Because Braille is an alphabet rather than a language of its own, it can be translated into many languages, making it accessible to blind people worldwide.

Since then, Braille has gone global. It’s been modified to suit the needs of countless languages, cultures and communities, and is now used by an estimated 150 million people worldwide.
WHAT IS WORLD bRAILLE DAy? World Braille Day is celebrated annually on 4th January, Louis Braille’s birthday. It helps to raise awareness about the challenges that blind people face, and raises vital funds which are used to improve life for blind people worldwide.
WHy IS bRAILLE SO IMpORTANT?
The world is tailored for people with vision – finding your way around your house, cooking, watching TV, reading medicine bottles, paying your bills, using a computer, going out of the house on your own and countless other things – are all difficult if not impossible if you can’t see. This means that blind people can become completely reliant on others, losing their mobility and independence and becoming isolated and lonely.
Some of the money goes towards helping implement the Marrakesh Treaty, an international agreement to allow organisations to share their Braille resources, free of copyright laws, with developing countries that don’t have the funds for Braille books themselves.
Braille is such an important tool because it not only allows blind people to communicate, but it gives them their independence, so that they can feel a part of their community. Louis Braille, the

But of course. Death is not on the immediate horizon or in your plans – not for a good few decades at least. But think on. You readily ‘buy’ insurance to protect you against unforeseen happenings. So why aren’t you doing the same with regard to your death? Remember, your house may never be flooded and you may never write off your car. But you will die one day. Cast iron guarantee.
I know, I know…your partner will ‘get everything’. Well hang on in there. If you do happen to unexpectedly shake off this mortal coil, it’s by no means certain that they will – especially if you’re not married.

they die, all their belongings would automatically go to their loved ones, but this is not necessarily the case. If you die before making a will and you’re not married to your partner (or formed a civil partnership), your partner will not automatically inherit anything from you. No matter how long you have been together or how committed you are, the law dictates that everything will go to your nearest blood relative. This is known as ‘dying intestate’.

THAT WOULD bE My pARENTS! Yes. They’d get the lot. And if they didn’t want to pass any of it on to your partner then they don’t have to. And your partner would have no legal recourse to make them do so.
WHAT AbOUT INSURANCE? Same applies. If after your death, your family is entitled to compensation, a death-in service payment, or an insurance pay-out and you don’t make a will, this too will go to your blood relatives. In the case of a home that is jointly owned, it often has to be sold so that a share of the assets can pass from the deceased to the next of kin. If you’re unmarried and have no
living relatives, your entire estate will pass to the taxman. Your partner may not even have a say in your funeral arrangements.
I’M MARRIED bUT WE SpLIT Up, WHAT HAppENS THEN? If you are separated but not yet divorced from a previous partner, they will inherit the bulk of your estate and your unmarried partner will get nothing.
WHAT AbOUT My CHILDREN? If you have children (and you’re not married, or are divorced) the whole estate will be divided between your children. Now that sounds alright at first – but, again, your
partner would get nothing. The children would own any savings, your personal belongings, and possibly even the home. Your partner would face the choice of fighting them for a share of your estate in court, or get nothing.

Costs vary – but a simple will may only cost around £100. And remember…if you die without making a will the law decides who gets what.

DAMp AND gAMp pARASOLAR pOWER The history of the umbrella, and indeed its sunnier cousin the parasol, is rich and varied. 'Parasol' comes from the happy marriage of two Spanish words – 'para' (to shield) and 'sol' (sun). If we go back as far as ancient Persia (specifically Nineveh) the parasol appears in a bas-relief image of a king being shielded from the sun in his chariot by a servant, and similar impressions are given by carvings found at Persepolis. It would appear that such protection from the sun was reserved only for monarchs – with hapless attendants left to simply hold parasols or umbrellas over the heads of those they serve. Th e palm-leaf fans as seen in depictions of the Pharaohs of ancient egypt are also considered by some as a form of parasol, though the proper term for one is 'fl agellum' – they can also be found in temple wall paintings as part of procession scenes honouring chosen gods. Time, then, to leave the pyramids behind and jump forward to brollies as we know them today. Well before Rihanna saw fi t to celebrate them in song of course!

Umbrellas have their roots in Latin – hailing from either 'umbel' (a flower, from which they get their recognised shape), or 'umbra' (which can mean either 'shadow' or 'shaded'). Th e most popular slang term for one is of course 'brolly' – though a little-used and uniquely British alternative is 'gamp'. We can thank Charles Dickens for that! It comes from the character of Mrs Gamp in his 1843 novel Martin Chuzzlewit – she's an alcoholic nurse who is rarely seen without her black umbrella.
Of course if you wanted to have a little fun with it, you could always do a Mary Poppins – if you’re a lady and can fi rst fi nd a parrot umbrella and then work out how to fl y the thing, or for the chaps there's the Seventh Doctor (who carried two different umbrellas – a simple black one from his début in Time and The Rani (1987) until Paradise Towers and then the question-mark shaped alternative he's most associated with from Delta and The Bannermen until his last outing in Survival, in 1989). either way, keep singing – and dry, of course!
Those of you who pay attention to Met Office weather forecasts will also know that the umbrella is their symbol for rain. But what you may not know is that they can also be used as weapons! Any woman reading the Daily Mirror in January 1902 would have found a handy article on how to protect themselves from 'ruffians' using only a parasol or brolly, while then – French president Nicolas Sarkozy was revealed to have invested in an armourplated umbrella for similar reasons in 2011. It set him back an eye-watering £10,000, and we think he'd have been better off nipping across the Channel to James Smith and Sons of London, one of Britain's only remaining dedicated (if not the last) umbrella stores!

So you love taking photos but you haven’t got a few hundred pounds lying around to splash out on the new, bank-breaking DSLR? Fear not! You can get your smartphone snaps looking like professional photos with just a few easy tips and tricks.
How to get pro pHotoS on Your SmArtpHone! CLEAN LENS WRITTEN BY LUCy NObLE
It might sound obvious, but make sure your lens is clean. We use and abuse our phones and a sticky smear over the lens can really ruin a good photo. We often blame the blur on the phone being old, but a good wipe with a lens cloth and some specialist cleaning solution can have it looking good as new. Treat your phone camera like you’d treat that expensive Canon, and you’ll reap the rewards!
pERSpECTIVE Find unusual angles to take photos from. If you look at professional photos in magazines or online, they’re rarely taken by standing directly in front of the subject, and taking a photo square-on. Get down on the floor, get up high and shoot from above, or find something in your surroundings to frame the picture. Unusual is interesting!
EDITINg editing apps are your friend! In the age of Instagram, it’s almost unheard of to see a photo that hasn’t been through a filter, but remember that Instagram isn’t the

only app out there. There are plenty of photo editing apps like Snapseed that will allow you to not only edit the colours and add filters, but also add frames, writing and formatting that will make you look like a Photoshop pro! Just remember, be unique and don’t go for the same retro filters as everyone else!
you used a flash. Yes, sometimes you want to take photos in dark places, but unfortunately, smartphone flashes are rarely up to the job. Luckily, there are tricks to get around it; get creative by finding another light source, like a small lamp, or even someone else’s phone torch. Anything is better than the smartphone flash!

Play about with your phone’s camera settings and find out what you can do in-house. As well as shooting through filters, you can change the depth of field of your photo by simply tapping on the screen. This helps you to focus on the right area of your picture, and gives the impression that it was taken on some snazzy long-lens or macro lens!
If all of that fails, ask old Saint Nick for an add-on lens for your smartphone. There are some really nifty little lenses available, and they don’t have to be expensive: like Camkix, which gives you telephoto, fisheye, macro and wide-angle lenses in one kit, for only £20.99 from Amazon. This will really make your photos stand out!
FLASH Stop flashing! There’s nothing worse than a cute selfie being ruined by that horrible yellow glow that comes from using the flash. Oh, apart from maybe the curse of the red demon-eyes on everybody in the group photo when, yet again,
However you chose to do it, remember that the most important thing about taking good photos is to be individual. The same shots get repeated time and time again, but if you can find your own quirky approach to photography, your photos will be interesting no matter what camera you’re using!

SqUASHED IN If we asked you to think of a game involving a racquet you’d probably think tennis, right? You could opt for a game of squash! In 2003 America’s Forbes magazine ranked it top of their list of healthiest sports to play, which should give you some incentive if you’re trying to shift a few pounds... plus you’re spoilt for choice of courts in the local area. David Lloyd at Port Solent has them, as do Roko, the Mountbatten Leisure Centre, Havant, Fareham and Petersfield Leisure Centres, the University of Portsmouth and Portsmouth Grammar School to name a few.
HOME RUNS AT HOME Yes, it may be America’s national game but it also has a presence here. The British Baseball Federation was founded in 1987 and now oversees a Great British national side as well as club leagues at all ages and abilities from youth to adults. The game was introduced here in 1890 by Francis Ley of Derbyshire, who had come across it on a visit to the States Perhaps it’ll be no surprise then to learn that one of the first proper clubs in the country was the Derby County Baseball Club. If you’d like to take in a game locally your best bet is the Southampton Mustangs (southamptonmustangs.co.uk). The Great Britain side also beat the US to win the 1938 World Cup of Baseball, perhaps a surprise to anyone thinking the game begins and ends across the pond! By simply donating 470ml of your blood, (which is just under a pint) you can save lives and it’s not as bad as you think. We all have around eight pints of blood in our bodies and our hearts pump 2,000 gallons of blood each minute, so we have enough to spare! The whole process takes up to ten minutes, so what are you waiting for? Blood is used for transfusions and to treat medical conditions such as anemia, cancer, heart attacks, blood disorders, emergency surgery and blood loss after childbirth. Our blood is made up of various different components such as red blood cells, platelets and plasma and one donation of blood can be used to treat several patients. The donated blood lasts up to 42 days, but can save up to three people’s lives! Hospitals are desperate for rare blood types. Remember eat regular meals and drink plenty of fluids. On the day of your dontation the NHS will provide a refreshments.
WHO CAN DONATE bLOOD? Those who are fit and healthy, weigh between 7-25 stone, aged between 17-66 (or 70 if you have given blood before), or are over 70 and have given blood in the last two years. If you have any of the following it’s best to get checked out by the GP first: • Receiving medical or hospital treatment • Taking medication • After travelling outside of the UK • After having a tattoo or piercing • During and after pregnancy • If you feel unwell • If you have cancer after receiving blood, blood products or organs.
