EDITOR’S LEttER Mayhem! starts at 40...

In the last issue I was banging on about how we were celebrating our fi fth birthday. Well, this issue marks another milestone for Mayhem! Magazine, and as the old phrase in life goes, ‘Life begins at 40’, perhaps this is where the mayhem really starts. Either way, I’d like to raise a festive drink to all those who have helped make it happen and long may it continue.

There are loads of ways to join the Mayhem! network. Let us know what you’re thinking.

Enough of that, what have we got lined up for you? As usual this issue is packed full of stuff for him, her, young and old. We chat with music legend, Sting, and offer a tips for keeping control of the harsh winters effects on your health. If you’re feeling a little bah humbug at this time of year, and you’re probably not alone, check out page 32 for ways to revive the magic, or you could just stay in bed until the spring arrives.

Check out our website, Facebook and Twitter pages for more Mayhem! exclusives and freebies!

There’s far too much to mention in my 15-odd lines, so why not get yourself comfy and fi nd out for yourself. We’ll be back with more Mayhem! in 2017, so until then. Ho ho ho! daniel tidbury | editor-in-chief

9 ways to RELaX GiVe soMe loVe Yes, you may feel as if you want everyone to show you some, but offer some back…it really works! By just hugging a friend or family member, playing with your pet cat or dog, or just being still and holding hands with your partner. Such interaction stimulates the brain, helping you to see your way through problems. It may also help lower blood pressure.

written by edward Couzens-lake

Let’s face it. Life is stressful these days, there are no two ways about it! We’re all under pressure and from family, work, finances and friends and it can all get too much at times. Luckily, we know a few ways of getting ourselves chilled, relaxed and ready for the trials of the day. And guess what? We’re going to share them with you!

Meditate Guess what? Meditating isn’t all about sitting cross legged and saying: “Ommmm” several thousand times. Any repetitive action that you enjoy and which relaxes you can be regarded as a form of meditation. This can include walking, swimming, reading – in fact any activity that calms you and keeps you ‘in the moment’.

Visualisation It’s your mind – start to use it. Visualising a favourite place, person or sight. It’s not difficult – after all, visualisation is just a posh word for ‘daydream’. Think how easily you used to be able to do that and learn to do it again!

self MassaGe

Breathe When we are tense or stressed out, our breathing becomes swift and shallow. Which isn’t good. Learning to do steady, deep and relaxed breathing can make a huge difference. There are lots of breathing exercises out there you can try, so see which one works best for you.

take it all in When it’s safe to do so (not when you’re driving for example!) just stop. Stop and take a long, deep, close look around you. Maybe focus on some birdsong or the passing clouds. Sitting near water and just observing that scene can be hugely relaxing. Find yourself that nice place, that relaxing sound or scene and lose yourself in it.

haVe a Cup of tea! It’s almost a cliché isn’t it? Everything feels better with a nice hot cuppa! Chamomile tea, for example, is a traditional favourite for calming the mind and reducing stress. Find a type that works with you and, when it all gets a bit much, sit down and have a brew.

If, for example, your neck and shoulders are tense, simply relax them by gently rubbing those tense areas. Find a way that’s relaxing and find the points that need a little attention. Same applies to your feet, give them a rub…it feels nice and gets the circulation flowing.

take a tiMe out This may not be easy but, just as you think you’re going to lose it, freak out, have an attack of the screaming fits – step back, walk away, remove yourself from the situation. Breathe, slowly and deeply and focus on letting all that tension go. Don’t rush it. Time is always on your side. Regard it as a friend, not an enemy.

listen to MusiC If music be the food of love, play on. In ‘Twelfth Night’, Orsino feels that listening to music will help him cope with his obsession with love and desire. So try it for yourself – no matter what you’re looking to escape. Recent research has shown that listening to half an hour of classical music may produce calming effects equivalent to 10mgs of Valium!

so many of us start the day off with our favourite coffee, grabbing a latte on the way to the office, boiling the kettle as we wait for the photocopier to warm up, or waking up to a steaming hot coffee pot. But have you ever considered what your choice of hot drink says about you? written by Jennie rawlinG

instant Coffee You’re laid back and take life as it comes, but tend to procrastinate and put things off. A cheerful and straightforward kind of person, unfortunately you’re not known for your planning skills.

BlaCk Coffee You like to keep things simple and are resistant to change. Patient, effi cient and a bit old school, you also have a tendency to be dismissive.

latte A real people pleaser, you’re generous with your time and go out of your way to help others. Young at heart, this could be interpreted as immaturity. You like your creature comforts, but don’t always take good care of yourself.

woRst Fad dIEts written by Mia haBens

We’re all guilty of wanting to lose a few pounds from time to time, but some people are willing to go to extreme lengths to shed those unsightly lovehandles. Mayhem! explores some of the worst fad diets out there…

CaBBaGe soup diet

warrior diet

Th is diet involves living off homemade cabbage soup – that’s it. Long-term this can result in nutritional deficiencies and, in most cases, users fi nd it a struggle to manage on the cabbage soup and start to dread mealtimes. You’ll also smell like a compost heap so any of the positive effects of losing weight are instantly negated.

Also known as the Hunter or Caveman diet, it comes in several variations but in general is based on eating one main meal per day between the hours of 5–7 pm when the hunters are thought to have come back with the goods. The remainder of the day involves grazing on foods such as nuts and dried fruits.

Maple sYrup diet Well Beyoncé did it, so it must be good, right? It’s based on the Medal Bal natural tree syrup – made from the sap of the maple tree. The idea is that it cleanses your body of toxins, when mixed with lemon juice, water and cayenne pepper and the user is supposed to drink half a pint up to nine times per day – this results in an intake of way below 600 calories. Diets under 600 calories per day can be dangerous to health, and this one contains pretty much no protein, fi bre, vitamins or minerals!

Remember eating breakfast and regular meals is key to losing weight and maintaining weight loss long-term. Even nuts and dried fruits, though high in nutrients, are also high in calories and can add up.

zone diet If you want complexity then this is the one for you! The zone has no room for flexibility and is based around meals being 40% carbohydrate, 30% protein and 30% fat. The time and inclination required to work out the food groups and meals is probably more complicated than making small changes to intake that will result in long-term healthy weight loss.

Blood Group diet The inventor of this diet believed that blood type infl uenced how each different nutrient is broken down in the body. • Blood Group A – Vegetarian based diet with no dairy products • Blood group B – Varied intake • Blood group AB – Combination of diets for A and B – so on one hand varied intake and the other a vegetarian diet? • Blood group O – the most common blood group – high meat, no dairy or wheat/grains – sound familiar: think Atkins The problem is that cutting out foods for certain blood groups can lead to problems e.g. decreasing dairy foods in the diet can mean a risk of a calcium deficiency if followed for long periods. Conclusion – get off of your lazy arse and get down the gym…it’s not rocket science!

BodILy oddItIEs! There are some mysteries we just can’t help delving into, yet perhaps the biggest is staring us in the face, which is ironically part of the body! Of course the question of “is it my body, or something inside me?” was first pondered over by the somewhat unlikely figure of Alice Cooper, but unfortunately he’s not a qualified GP. written by Chris MorleY Unwrap that snake from around your neck and wipe off the black mascara as we pay a visit to Dr Mayhem!’s surgery to learn more about the quirks of the human body. Anything but an out of hours phone-line…

twitChinG to Go Sadly not the more sedate pastime of birdwatching, more’s the pity for those who frequently suffer from an attack of wobbles in the eyelid. But what causes the twitch? Rubbing, blinking or a good scratch won’t solve it no matter how hard you try. Science has the answer here: alcohol, caffeine, stress and tiredness are all culprits in disruption to the optic nerve. These rude interruptions as it goes about its work are what causes you to look slightly manic as you try so desperately to get things back on track. By taking the simple step of reducing your intake of the amber nectar or its morning equivalent, getting enough sleep and cutting down on stressful activity you can start to look normal again, and people might even sit next to you on the bus or train once more.

horseplaY If you’re still not sleeping well at night, an errant horse could be to blame. His name’s Charley and he gives his name to those often quick but painful spasms that occur around the calf area, often while you’re away in the Land of Nod. Charley-horses, as they’re known, are a mystery to medics, and the root cause is open to speculation.

needles and pins

Some believe they could be a sort of delayed response to strained muscles, or on a more scientific level an imbalance of electrolytes in the body. Either way they’re rather painful! But the remedy is easy enough and who doesn’t want to treat themselves to a he-man or woman moment as they flex their legs? Still, naughty Charley!

Sticking around a while longer in a similar area, we come now to pins and needles. Yes, it was a chart hit for the Searchers at one point, but nobody knows if Jack Nitzsche and Sonny Bono wrote it after a particularly crippling bout. The uncomfortable sensation is simply caused by compromised blood supply, typically to an arm or leg, and is properly known as paraesthesia. The tingle you feel as you shift back into a more comfortable position is the relevant nerves getting back into the groove of sending the right messages to your brain! Yes, it is ruddy painful, but grin and bear it – your noggin just needs time to adjust.

the BiG freeze Who doesn’t like a nice big brain, crammed full of knowledge? It’s important to show it a little love, and shovelling ice cream in too quickly upsets it. You can be sure it’ll let you know, though. The minute the frozen treat touches the roof of your mouth, the pain will remind you never to do that again! It’s all the result of blood vessels seeking to warm the affected area back up, like a sort of nice warm blanket, with receptors under it all reacting to the change. To relieve symptoms try eating slower. It’s a no-brainer.

BaBY it’s Cold outside Ever wondered how you can be cold in mid-summer? If you’re a member of the fairer sex you’re more sensitive to cold by nature thanks to differences in muscle mass and body fat, among other things. Iron deficiencies, high blood pressure and reactions to medication can also steal heat from our bodies quicker than lap-hunting cats (who are also very good at it). It might sound daft but carrying an extra jumper or a coat just in case is crazy enough to work! After all nobody likes to be cold. Now, be a dear and stick the heating on, please.

tears of an onion Surely everyone has had that awkward moment while making dinner when chopping an onion leaves them blubbing like they’ve just watched the saddest film ever made, on repeat. When you cut into the humble vegetable it releases the basic chemical content of the onion’s cells, and the resulting sulphuric compound gets into your eyes, causing the tears to flow! But your trusty fridge can help rectify this easily enough. If you chill your onions, the cold temperatures will help to slow down the process and you won’t look like an emotional wreck after serving the meal you’ve slaved over. Cookery just got a whole lot more a-peeling, right?

“After thirteen yeArs, criticAlly AcclAimed songwriter sting returns to the forefront of rock And roll...” 16 | Winter 2016/17

“I never actually admit I’m making a record until very late in the process,” Sting explains – but even by his own standards the announcement of his new album, 57th & 9th, came somewhat out of the blue.

a

s the first musical offering from the former frontman of The Police in thirteen years, 57th & 9th – so called after the name of the junction that the singer had to cross everyday on the way to the studio – is a rocking return to the front line of the industry from one of its most respected songwriters. The 65-year-old Northumberland-native is quick to mention that his recent album wouldn’t have come together through his unquestionable ability alone.

“So we booked some studio time and invited some musicians to come in, and we improvised,” he explains. “And this happened very quickly, very spontaneously. I work with extraordinary musicians who are very gifted and give me a lot to work with and my job is to make sense of it all.” Despite his involvement in a combined total of over 100 million record sales, not to mention the sixteen Grammy Awards, three Academy Award nominations and CBE, Sting adds “I surprise myself and the people I’m working with and hopefully the listener.” “To me the essence of music is surprise – both in the choices you make within a song and the choices about what you present to the public. I don’t make music by any formulaic, magic process. I just follow my instincts, I don’t know where it’s going. On this album, we’ve ended up with something that is energetic and noisy but also thoughtful.”

Photo: eric ryan Anderson

The first single from the album, I Can’t Stop Thinking About You, is also a representation of how 57th & 9th is a journey through Sting’s own attitude to the artistry that has made his a household name.

17 | Winter 2016/17

“i think it’s reAlly the crisis of the century” “All I had in front of me was a blank sheet of paper with no clues as to what could be revealed there,” he says of the track’s origins. “So that first song I wrote actually became the first song on the album. It’s about that obsession, that obsessive search for inspiration, for a subject, for a muse, for the music to reveal something inside itself.” As it turns out, this act of describing the artistic process through the art itself was just the catalyst Sting needed to churn out the further nine tracks that make up the album. “I think you live in a permanent state of anxiety as an artist; you write a song and then suddenly you’re empty - what do you do next? But, I wrote this song very quickly,” he muses. “I basically forced myself to keep doing it - finish song, start another one. Finish song, start another one. And I had a timeline given to me by my manager. I’m not normally presented with a deadline but I sort of enjoyed having that pressure. It just gave me the impetus to create something more spontaneous”. And if ‘I Can’t Stop Thinking About You’ is an insular track, the rest of the album looks outwards to the recent major events that have had an effect on him, from tackling the refugee crisis on Inshallah – “I think it’s really the crisis of the century” – to his

photo: kevin Mazur/wireimage “satire about climate sceptics,” One Fine Day. The track 50,000, was “a response to the passing of a lot of cultural icons this year” – something which has obviously affected Sting on a personal level. “It’s really about how surprised we all are when one of our icons dies, because we’ve sort of invested them with immortality in a way, so that when they die it really brings our own mortality into sharp focus,” he remarks. “I wanted to respond to that as a rockstar myself. I’ve been in that position, I’ve had hundreds of thousands of people singing my songs back to me, so I know what that feels like. But it’s an illusion, we are no more immortal or no better than anyone else. We’re all human beings and we are all too fragile. So the song is about that. It’s about those who die, but it’s also about me. And I think it’s a fairly honest look at what it’s like to grow old.” But when it comes down to it, despite the critical acclaim and devoted fans, this rockstar business is still just a day-job for Sting. “I don’t have a goal except to have fun and express something at the end of a day’s work,” he concludes. “You know, to have something to just take home to my wife and say, ‘This is what I did today.’ Like most people who work, you need to have result at the end of the day and that’s all.” Sting’s twelfth studio album, 57th & 9th, is out now. Winter is officially here, we were warned of it’s coming for so long, we’d almost forgotten how chilly, breezy and wet winter really can be! Next time you step out into those biting winds, your face splashed with bitterly cold rain, give a thought for your skincare routine - the changing season needs to be reflected when looking after our skin! faCial Care We only get one face so it’s our duty to look after it as best as possible, which is why we recommend readjusting your skincare routine to cater for your skins winter needs. Invest in a cleanser to suit your skin type and your routine. If you like removing your make up or cleansing at night with cotton wool and a toner, go down that route. If you prefer warm water, a cleanser and a flannel, stick with that. Come winter, exfoliation is just as important as cleaning our faces. We want to keep our skin bright, glow and even in complexion, so best thing to do is to source an exfoliation with a grain that isn’t too harsh; you want to be exfoliating twice a week, but no more! Where you can, stay away from plastic microbeads – they

end up in the sea, and they’re not that beneficial for our skin. Go for a more natural exfoliator; sea salt, ground almond shells, sugar. With chapped lips come sore eyes and little red noses and the best way to combat that this winter is moisturiser! Wind whips the moisture out of your skin and strips our skin, dehydrating it more than any other season, so step up your moisturiser game and make it a staple part of your routine.

BodY Care While the skin on our bodies doesn’t need quite as much attention as our face does, it’s still important to keep everything in check. Just like our faces, it’s important to scrub and buff your skin, sloughing away any dead or dry skin and keeping our complexions healthy and even.

Moisturise, moisturise, moisturise! We’re talking knees, elbows anywhere and everywhere! Keep your skin in its best condition with cocoa butter, shea butter or a host of essential oils with brightening and rejuvenating elements.

hands Seasonal changes, the bitter cold and drastic temperature changes really can take it’s toll on our hands so keep an eye on any jagged nails (these will catch on your favourite Christmas jumper) and your cuticles; keep them moisturised and happy. Those who suffer from eczema or dermatitis may notice it particularly around their knuckles in winter, and even those who don’t may notice sore or drier skin in those areas. Throw a little tube of hand cream into your bag for on-the-go hydration!

When it comes to skincare, we immediately think of anti-aging this and gravity-defying that, it doesn’t need to be quite so complicated. It’s much more simple than that. Male and female skincare is, when stripped back, very very similar. However, men’s skincare gets overlooked because not EVERY man is interested, but when you’ve got a beard, skincare can be even more important…

written by lex BrookMan

BEaRdy maN When a man has a beard, you can’t see what’s going on with his skin underneath that mass of hair. Especially in the winter, it’s even more important for everyone to take care of their skin. The switching elements and changing temperatures wreak havoc on our skin even more so when we’re shaving and trimming so whether you’re sporting an indie hipster beard, a dad-beard or a full blown Scottish lumberjack beard, here are some tips to help you keep your skin (and beard) in tip top condition!

exfoliate

hYdrate Your Beard

Especially underneath your beard! It’s not enough to just show your beard the shampoo bottle in the shower anymore, get in there with a nice thick scrub that allows you to buff away any dead skin loitering in your beard, not to mention dust and debris from your day to day life.

Just like we condition the hair on our heads to keep it shiny, soft and managable, our beards deserve the same. Pick up either neat jojoba oil to warm between your palms and work into your beard for healthy, shiny hair or pick up a hair moisturiser like R ’n’ B from Lush Cosmetics; works perfectly for those slightly more wiry beards!

Moisturise After a good cleanse and exfoliation, your skin will need a nice layer of moisture, no matter what your skin type. Pick out a moisturiser that works well for you, and apply to the face in circles working up the face.

Be proud of Your Beardedness You’ve got the commitment to grow yourself a wonderful beard, you might as well look after it, and

here comes our favourite tip of them all for this festive seasons…

Beard BauBles… The Gay Beards on Instagram should be your bible for all things festive for facial hair. Everything from tiny beard-baubles, to mini fairy lights and even tinsel, the guys from The Gay Beards are setting examples for brilliantly decorated beards this Christmas so here’s our challenge for you. Do your research, don some beard baubles and stun at this years office Christmas party.

FEstIvE dRINks FROM AROUND THE WORLD written by edward Couzens-lake

Let’s face it, the choice of alcoholic beverages at most parties, Christmas or otherwise, is fairly dull – in fact, you’ll guess what’s on offer before you even get there. The kitchen sink will be full of bottles of lager (if your host has a sophisticated streak, with ice included!) as well as one bottle of Jack Daniels – quietly purloined from someone who is now stuck in a corner somewhere, cradling it close as they quietly weep. Somewhere on the kitchen table will be a punch bowl, overflowing with faintly sticky liquid, as well as assorted bits of orange, apple and something purple and unknown. There might, of course, be a bottle of wine somewhere, but you just saw that disappear into the bathroom and you’d rather not go in there. Pretty poor show I’m sure you’ll agree. We’ve all been to that party. We might even have squabbled over that half empty bottle of warm lager. But all is not lost. With a little imagination – you can have a party that everyone talks about for all the right reasons, those reasons being the vast array of drinks you had available from all corners of the world. So, pour yourself a Romanian beer and curl up with Mayhem! as we check out five of the best.

28 | Winter 2016/17

usa – eGG noG A very sweet dairy based beverage that is traditionally made with milk/cream, sugar, beaten eggs (which help give it a distinctive frothy texture) and a liquor – usually brandy or rum. The fi nished result is usually accompanied by a sprinkling of ground cinnamon or nutmeg, probably to give the drinker – or the drinkers companion – the impression that he or she is drinking something fairly harmless. In reality, it can really kick ass and is not to be taken lightly, especially as it’s easy to drink in large quantities without really noticing the results!

Brazil – Caipirinha The national cocktail of Brazil – and they know how to party! Th is is a mixture of lime juice and cachaça, a rum liquor made from fermented sugarcane. It’s fairly expensive but attainable, and certainly worth it to try this little delight of a drink. Just put four–six lime wedges into a glass, sprinkle with sugar, then crush the mix. Put all that into a glass, add some crushed ice and, fi nally, pour in the cachaça – and enjoy!

Advertise with us 023 9229 4408

enGland – punCh Punches, of course have their varieties all over the world, but the traditional English type is perhaps the ‘classic’ one to offer at a party. Th is one uses wine, cider, sloe gin or a liqueur as its base with a generous helping of fruit juice (preferable) or soft drinks to tone it down and provide some fl avour. One well known variety is called the Pimms Cup – using Pimms No.1 and lemonade at a ratio of 1:2, a squeeze of lemon and some orange, lemon and apple slices and a couple of cucumber slices. And be warned: if you think Pimms is a drink for part-timers and party poopers, see what the view of the ceiling is like after you’ve had a few glasses!

MexiCo – MiChelada Perhaps served best as an aprèsparty drink as this little beauty is considered a good remedy for hangovers! It’s made with beer, lime juice, tomato juice and assorted peppers, sauces and, as is the Mexican way, spices galore! You can even add a pepper or some chilli sauce for an exquisitely tasting but possibly explosive taste combination, the idea that it’s a good hangover cure presumably coming from the fact you might be far too concerned about your stomach to be thinking about your head!

italY – Bellini Th is is a hugely refreshing peach and sparkling wine cocktail that was fi rst served in Venice in the middle of the last century. Traditionally, you do need white peaches to make the defi nitive Bellini, but if you can only get normal ones down the market, they’ll do. Puree the peaches in a blender and strain through a sieve – get about a cups worth. Add that to a pitcher and pour in some chilled sparkling wine. Enjoy!

How to PULL at yoUR woRk cHRIstmas PaRty It’s the one time of the year that you and your colleagues are expected to show up for work, get drunk, make a complete fool of yourselves and become legendary figures at the coffee machine. Yes, for one night only, it’s open season at the office. Anything goes and any man or woman is considered fair game – even you – yes even you might be capable of talking someone back to your place afterwards, what with all the seasonal bonhomie going on, the cheap wine, the decorations and the crushed Vol-au-vents... ...however, it’s a different game and a different challenge to actually have the verve, vim and vigour to notch one up at the party itself. Think of the kudos and how much more palatable the whole evening might become if you have even the slightest chance of doing just that. So, if the tall guy in marketing is in your sights, else team leader in sales and the thought of undoing her hair and letting it fall loose around her bare white shoulders that’s making you stay... let Mayhem! suggest a few ways of helping make some of those Christmas wishes come true...

Well duh! But a rookie mistake for many. Yes, a few more beers than usual may well make you the funniest, most entertaining and interesting person on the planet with a Sinatra-like voice on the karaoke. But it’s also a sure fire way of ensuring that you won’t be getting any sort of early Christmas present if the one signal you’re giving off to everyone is “I’m drunk!” Pace yourself and quit the booze once you feel you’re at a point where you can be witty, confident and even suave – but still be in control, and at the point where you would have no qualms about Chris or Carol (hey, even both!) from Accounts catching you checking them out.

Chances are that there’s always been someone in the offi ce who you’ve had a bit of a secret crush on. If so, great, read on. There’s nothing more for you here. If not – well, pick someone at random who would never have dreamt you even knew they existed, much less had a thing for them. That element of surprise, the “what, me?” factor will pique their interest – at least. The rest is up to you. If it’s game on, you’ll both know soon enough. And the thrill of the unknown will only add to the potential and the growing excitement...

Close the deal I’m glad things seem to be going well for you. But don’t you think that it now might be a good idea to start thinking making a discreet exit? You both seem to be at the stage where you really couldn’t get any closer or touch each other anywhere else, at least in public, without raising eyebrows as much as anything else.

piCk Your plaCe Spontaneity is great for making things super heated and sexy, but it can also get you busted if you haven’t put a little thought into where the evenings proceedings might reach their noisy climax! So put the stampeding libido on hold for a few moments and choose your location with care. If it’s a room that can be locked from the inside – brilliant, see you later. On the other hand, if it’s the bathroom, well, come on – not the cubicles, eh? But a waist high counter might be rather fun, especially if there’s a mirror in front of it! And, as far as polishing the boardroom table is concerned – stay away, unless, that is, you are the boss, are with the boss, or you don’t give a fl ying thingy about getting fi red in the morning.

Make it QuiCk! Yes guys, it can last for two minutes and, this time, it really doesn’t matter! Remember, you’ve only got a few minutes anyway until people start to notice you’re not around and start to put two and two together about the two of you putting yourselves together. Shirts, skirts, shoes and bras take time to take off and longer to put back on again – so keep them on and just remove or loosen the necessaries, remember, for both of you, this is scoring, not making love.

Make Your re-entrY Nothing but nothing announces a party hook up than two people wandering back into the room together after a brief absence, looking a tad fl ushed, dishevelled and without their drinks. It looks a lot less suspicious if the girl goes back fi rst and the guy shows up later, and from a different direction. Then just continue where you left off – and you never know, you might fi nd that your offi ce score leads to bigger and better things!

There are a myriad of different products on the market promising the ‘whiff of Christmas’. As a basic rule of thumb, you should combine pine, cinnamon, cloves, apple and gin (the aroma of tipsy grannies). Avoid anything that purveys the perfume of ice because ice doesn’t smell and it’s stupid.

Christmas isn’t meant to be comfortable. Surely you remember being thrown into the chaffing embrace of a warm, woolly cardy on Christmas morning? Anything with some kind of festive insignia should be enthusiastically adopted as you sweat and swelter into a pool of perspiration.

Carolling (not to be confused with the ‘art’ of pulling girls named Carol) is the mainstay of invoking that Christmas vibe. It may seem old hat, but surely you remember reworking the words to ‘Away in a Manger’ to comic effect? While you’re at it, you should definitely hop onto YouTube and revisit some of the Christmas pop acts from yesteryear. Nothing shouts ‘It’s Christmaaaas’ like Noddy Holder, and nothing embodies Xmas camp quite like George Michael’s hair.

Christmas should be fantastically dramatic with at least one person ruining it for everyone else. You can guarantee Christmas without a hitch won’t be Christmas at all, so you’re best off saving everyone the hassle and kick it all off yourself. Maybe for the first time in your life, you’ll be able to tell Granny that her ill-considered gift of poesies and new knickers doesn’t quite cut the mustard. Stomp off to your room and listen out for the audible sound of your relatives shaking their head in unison.

eat, drink ‘n’ Be MerrY If you’re on a diet, give up now. There are far too many delectations around to continue with the size zero dream. As a child, you could comfortably gorge on enough chocolate to sink Belgium, and the mince pies will not eat themselves thank you very much. Also, don’t forget the all-important fragrance of varying kinds of roasting meats (see smell, scent ‘n’ stench). If you do imbibe en honneur of yuletide festivities, go easy on the eggnog/snowballs or you’ll be burping custard for a week.

Channel, pretend ‘n’ iMaGine Just because you’re not a child anymore, doesn’t mean you can’t indulge in all the fun. Channel your inner child and leave gifts out for Father Christmas and the reindeer; you might feel like a twit but it’s guaranteed to take you back. It is also strongly recommended that you head down to the Christmas tree upon the very stroke of midnight to shake every present and tear off corners of wrapping to sate your curiosity.

The icy winds and snowbound months of winter are fast approaching and more than a few people will be thinking of a little tot of whisky, an indulgence enjoyed while out in the cold, else sat relaxed in front of a roaring fire. ah Yes. whiskY. it’s froM sCotland. Well, yes and no. It is, of course, famously known as the drink of the glens and highlands and as Scottish as tartan and haggis. But Scotland is just one of many whisky producing nations.

suCh as? Ireland for a start – Irish whisky was one of the earliest distilled drinks in Europe with records dating back to the 12th century. However, whisky is also manufactured in the USA, Australia, Canada, Denmark, Finland, Germany, India, Japan and Wales. There is even an English whisky.

Advertise with us 023 9229 4408

whoa, hold on a Minute. an enGlish whiskY? Absolutely – there are a few small distilleries producing whisky in England including one in Norfolk which began production in 2006. They created a limited edition whisky in 2011 at the time of the wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton which had an eye watering abv of 46%.

what’s the differenCe Between sCottish and irish whiskY then? Good question. It’s essentially down to the distilling process. Scottish whisky, ‘Scotch’, is distilled twice whereas Irish whisky goes through the same process three times – this gives it that particular lightness of taste that is so distinctive. There are other differences (eg) Scotch is cask: aged for at least two years, Irish for three. But the distilling process is perhaps the most notable one.

tot (N)

a smaLL mEasURE oF sPIRIts. what aBout aMeriCan whiskeY? Ever seen the old Westerns when a cowboy swaggers into the saloon and calls for a ‘redeye’? That was the name for a whisky of dubious quality back in the 19th century. They’ve moved in since – Bourbon is a type of American whisky while Southern Comfort is a liqueur with whisky fl avourings. Then of, course they have the ‘daddy’ of them all (in this writer’s opinion), Uncle Jack, aka Jack Daniel’s, a brand of sour mash Tennessee whiskey that is the bestselling American whiskey in the world.

how do You drink whiskY? There are myriad ways – but one golden rule, take your time. Whisky is all about quality not quantity. Adding water to your whisky dilutes it down a little and, as well as making the taste more manageable, it will also release more flavours and scents in the drink. Smell it, sip it, savour it and select the right type of glass: tumblers are best, especially if adding water or mixers.

i’M ConVinCed. anY reCoMMendations? Whisky is an intensely personal drink. Go to an independent off-license and ask someone there. As a general rule, Scotch is slightly more ‘raw’ to the palate than Irish, which most people fi nd smoother and lighter. American whiskys tend to be sweeter than their counterparts here. But try some out, see what works – and what doesn’t. And remember – it’s a drink and an experience to cherish. So treat it with respect.

a doG’s LIFE!

It’s a classic, even Barack Obama said, after winning the US election, that his kids earned the reward of a dog to accompany them to the White House. However, with money comes help and the burden is eased, so here’s some important points to remember before making that irresponsible buy… A dog’s life span is approximately 13 years. If your child is 12 now, will he/she still be living at home when the dog’s on its last legs? You do the math.

no MoneY? BIG problem! Dogs are expensive. From food to toys, to annual jabs and sudden vet care, every penny counts. On average a dog can cost its owner about £100 per month, so that’s £1,200 a year, and £15,600 in 13 years! Stubbington Ark rSPCA Solent branch, 174-176 ranvilles Ln, Fareham PO14 3eZ 01329 667541

36 | Winter 2016/17

not BiG on the Great outdoors? The dog is I’m afraid. Remember dogs love being out and about in the natural world, especially getting good walks. If you’re not one for moving off the couch, perhaps an independent cat would suit you better! If you get a puppy or often a rescue dog, remember that these animals need to be taught right from wrong, just like a child. Too much discipline and you’ll have a petrified pooch and the RSPCA knocking, and not enough and you’ll find the dog rules the roost.

toP tIPs

on GettinG a doG… • Research different breeds and decide which dog best suits your lifestyle. For example, border Collies need lots of exercise whereas Greyhounds are as lazy as Jim royale… • Get your pooch a decent collar and iD tag, just in case he finds that loose fence panel you never got round to fixing. • Make sure you comply with the right vaccines and worming/flea medications, seek advice from your local vet if in doubt • Enrol your waggy-tailed friend in a training class. it’s a great chance for them to socialise too. • Be responsible – there’s no such thing as the dog-poop-fairy and you could face fines of between £50-£1000, so bag it and bin it! • Remember, the winter is the time for mud, cold and wet… if you can still handle walking your dog and dealing with the mess, then you’re one hardy pet owner!

i like eatinG in Bed No. Stop right now. Apart from being thoroughly unhygienic it’s hardly going to help you sleep. Our minds need to be trained to accept that our bed means either one of those two things. Sleep or sex. If it gets used to the idea that we can eat there as well, then that’s just making things more complicated. That’s why you shouldn’t have a TV in the bedroom. And as for curling up under the duvet with your laptop…horrors! Don’t blame Mayhem! if you can’t sleep.

Just sleep then?

written by edward Couzens-lake

L vE yoUR BEd! A wise woman once sidled up to Mayhem! and offered these words of wisdom as regards your bed – that it should be used for two things and two things only. Sleep and sex. Nothing else… ever. So if you are abusing your bed, read on. It’s time to give it some love. Mayhem! slips back the duvet and finds out more. 40 | Winter 2016/17

loVe Your Bed? CoMe on, it’s Just a Bed! Au contraire. It’s so much more than that. After all, we use our bed more than any other item of furniture that we will buy – and we spend up to 40% of our lives sleeping. That means the thing that we do the most in the item of furniture that we will use the most. In our entire lives. That makes beds pretty important don’t you think?

Sleep experts will always tell you that one of the best ways to beat insomnia is to make the bedroom a place that our body associates with sleep. So keep the room clean, bright and airy. And invest in a good bed with a proper mattress. And get quality sheets and duvets. It’s an investment but one that will be worth it. Lots of people have sleep issues simply because their beds are uncomfortable.

and sex! Absolutely, yes. A cool, clean, comfortable bed with cotton sheets and a quality duvet. How cosy, how intimate, how damned sexy is that? Plus, you get to sleep afterwards. Hopefully in each other’s arms, yes gents, the ladies do like to cuddle afterwards. So make an effort to do so rather than asking how good you were before putting on Match of the Day.

the sleep CounCil No, they’re not a tacky Paul Weller tribute band. The Sleep Council can offer help and advice on how to create a near perfect environment for you to sleep in, which means it’ll be rather good for sex as well, which is a bonus! So take your bed seriously. Visit sleepcouncil.org.uk for more details.

HatHa yoGa

GETTING FIT FOR WINTER Want to keep fi t but lack the motivation? Hatha yoga could be for you! Developed by Indian yogic sage (basically a fancy term for ‘instructor’) Yogi Swatmarama in the 15th Century as a means of achieving purification of the body as a first step towards a pure and uncluttered mind, with the guiding principles first set out in the Hatha Yoga Pradipika. But don’t let that scare you off – the book is available in English, and is a collection of Swatmarama’s own experiences in pursuit of physical and spiritual strength, with selected borrowings from other works. A slight blot on his copybook, which may or may not have held him back in his quest for nirvana and a good rest from all that stretching in the afterlife. Worry not, though. If you’re looking towards a healthy body and/ or mind our resident guru can help – cross your legs and breathe deep!

shiVas down the spine The secret of success in this form of yoga was believed to have been spread by Shiva (the Hindu god of destruction and renewal) to his consort Parvati. She would have had to have got the gist of it relatively quickly, as ‘hatha’ is the Sanskrit translation of ‘ persistence’ or ‘ force’ – so you’d best be dedicated if you do choose to take up the discipline. Original topics covered by the good Yogi include shatkarma (purification), pranayama (energy control), chakras (centres of energy), kundalini (instinct) and shakti (sacred force) – far from a little light reading.

But in modern times it is practised purely for health and fi tness, though Swatmarama intended it to be a form of spiritual communion, focusing the mind on what he saw as more important matters beyond the material world. A likely excuse – our guru tells us he was most likely just knackered and fancied turning off his mind, relaxing and floating down stream.

colleague you really don’t like, or attempt to manifest yourself on a higher plane of consciousness? Guru says he knows which he’d pick any day, and we don’t tend to question him all that much. Mostly as we can’t understand what he says, and any attempt at translating usually ends in tears from him or us.

But yoga in all its forms has been shown to have many benefits for its exponents. Increased energy levels and muscle tone, improved circulation and higher quality sleep are all improvements frequently remarked upon, and all without having to fi nd an ashram and live as a hermit in the middle of who knows where. But if you do take that option feel free to send us pictures of yourself reading Mayhem! between excursions into the spiritual plane.

In its present form hatha can be understood as physical exercise with accompanying stress relief, focusing on opposing forces (both mental and physical) in an effort to unify mind and body. Should you choose to investigate further you’ll be working on asanas (physical postures), controlled breathing exercises and meditation. All of which should help you next time you find yourself under any kind of stress, whether its your boss giving you an unreasonable deadline at work, a delayed train or a dull relative. After all which would you rather do? Listen to yet another dull story from that token

It’s official: you hate Mondays, especially in winter. The total aberration of getting up in the early hours, the urge to throw your alarm clock across the room and getting ready while your mind is still in the land of Nod! There are so many reasons why we hate Mondays. There is no sensible alternative unless you decide to stop working. But us humans need to be realistic and, well, earn our living. So it’s back to the drawing board for thousands of us. Unless we manage to adopt a different standpoint. So let’s try…

a new lease of life

Mondays can be seen as an opportunity for regeneration. There is absolutely no need to do the same thing and have the same petty ambitions which you nurtured last week. You can suddenly come up with new ideas about how to change the world and go to work bursting with excitement at the prospect of doing it. Or to put it less blatantly you can modify the way you work. Instead of almost dozing off at 4pm while waiting for torture hour to end at 5pm, you can have an “idea exchange hour” or an “inspiration hour” to gather your thoughts about company goals and discuss them with colleagues or even your boss.

The total misery of getting up on Mondays and going to work may be smothering a more important fact: that you hate your current job. Loving your job makes you a happy man or woman. If you’re screaming blue murder on Monday morning at the prospect of meeting your boss and “boring” colleagues, then maybe it’s time to think about changing jobs. You might consider skilling up in your field and looking for another job or even learning something totally new and switching careers. Think about what you would love to do and get paid for. If you really love your job then you won’t look on it as work but will instead think of it as a paid hobby.

Mondays are the beginning of something bigger. A grand dream or a secret ambition. If you’re still looking for that all elusive meaning to your life, getting up and taking the trouble to go to work may suddenly appear as the fi rst steps in making your dream of helping your community come true. Small steps may lead to bigger things – it doesn’t matter if it’s winter and that the leaves are falling off the trees and the cold is creeping in, as you know why you get up in the early hours.

a soCial oCCasion It’s also about going out and meeting people. You might not like some of them in the buzzing world of work but there must be a few who you do like seeing and talking to. You can chat about your weekend or the latest blockbuster movie (or that girl or boy you fancy the pants off). There will always be time for a natter in the corporate world.

tiMe to liVe Seen in a less philosophical context, Mondays are like any other day of the week. Time to live, laugh, have fun or cry. Maybe one should de-dramatise Mondays and just look on them as an element of our lives. Seen this way, maybe you would stop saying that you hate Mondays and just shrug your shoulders and get on with it. The best option for the wise man or woman of the 21st century.

Epilepsy can strike anyone at any time, and, in many cases, for no apparent reason. For the 600,000 people in the UK, treatment is more often than not based upon prevention rather than cure. Mayhem! takes a closer look at what remains a much misunderstood medical condition. 46 | Winter 2016/17

WHAT EXACTLY IS EPILEPSY? A neurological disorder characterised by recurrent seizures. These are thought to be the result of excessive electrical activity in the brain. It can affect a person for their entire life or for a part of it, such as childhood.

what Causes epilepsY? Cases with an identifiable cause predominantly fall into two categories: those that are caused by brain injury or brain disease and those in which genetics are a factor. However, in around 60% of cases a specific cause for epilepsy cannot be found. There is a common misconception that epilepsy only involves someone falling to the floor and shaking. It is much more varied than this as there are over 40 different types of seizure.

is it life threateninG? Epilepsy can be life threatening, particularly regarding Sudden Unexplained Death in Epilepsy (SUDEP). SUDEP is said to have occurred when someone, with epilepsy, dies suddenly and unexpectedly for an unknown reason with, or without, evidence of having had a seizure. There are known to be changes in heart rate and breathing

during tonic-clonic seizures but there is no obvious explanation for death in SUDEP. Thankfully this is uncommon, affecting 1 in 1000 people with epilepsy.

Can it Be Cured? There is currently no known cure for epilepsy and the first line of treatment is medication. Medicines used to treat epilepsy are referred to as antiepileptic drugs or AEDs. They do not cure epilepsy or treat the cause, but they aim to reduce the likelihood of seizures occurring. In some cases neurosurgery is considered to ‘disconnect’ the area of the brain in which the seizure activity is originating from. Depending on the type of epilepsy and area from which the seizures originate, there are a variety of surgical procedures that may be performed.

what do i do if i see soMeone haVinG a seizure?

Make sure the person is in a safe place (not in a road etc) and if possible put something soft, like a jumper, under their head. Let the seizure run its course and do not try to restrict the persons movement or put anything in their mouth. Once the seizure ends put the person in the recovery position and reassure them as they recuperate.

do i need to Call an aMBulanCe? It is important to seek urgent medical attention by calling 999 for an ambulance if you witness someone you do not know having a seizure. Other reasons to call an ambulance include if someone has never had a seizure before, is not breathing or is blue around the lips, has sustained an injury during a seizure or is not responding to you after the seizure has ended.
