Most hotels looks the same: a white painted façade, a glimmering pool, rooms with neatly made beds in crisp white linen. But, if you’re tired of the same old thing, you might want to check out (or into) something just a little different…

hotels CloWn motel, nevada

This remote clown-themed motel could be the setting for a horror movie. When you enter, you’re greeted by hundreds of grinning clown dolls. Just try to sleep surrounded by these fi gures while pictures of their famous brethren stare at you from the walls. The motel is popular with tourists and clown enthusiasts alike, despite being located right next to a graveyard!

hotel de glaCe, Canada If you’re not a chocoholic (and can handle sub-zero temperatures) you might want to check into the Hotel de Glace instead. Spend the night in this fantastic ice fortress made from 30,500 tons of snow and ice. The hotel is open between the beginning of January and the end of March.

CasanUs, belgiUm Probably the weirdest one on the list; this hotel resembles a giant colon. Guests can even enjoy a drink at the BarRectum which is shaped like a giant intestine. If that doesn’t make for a memorable holiday, then what does?

Crane hotel faralda, amsterdam The Faralda Crane Hotel is built inside an actual crane and is a fortress of serenity in an industrial setting. you can rest peacefully above the dockyard below and, if you still have a head for heights, go bungee jumping from the top of the crane the morning after.

The SouThS best beaChes

With summer upon us many are thinking about booking a last minute holiday. But if it’s beautiful beaches you’re after, a foreign holiday is not always necessary. Here’s our pick of the south’s best beaches, not to mention our very own Southsea and Hayling, of course!

West Wittering A long, white sandy stretch of beach located just outside Chichester in West Sussex, this is the ultimate spot for those wanting to catch the rays in style. A firm favourite with celebs such as Kate Moss and Rolling Stones’ Keith Richards who owns an estate in Witterings. There’s also a generous grass carpark where visitors are invited to barbeque. 12 MaYheM! | SUMMER 2016

Camber sands Climping beaCh Situated just outside Littlehampton, Climping beach is a quieter alternative to others located along the south coast. The coastline is made up with a mixture of sand and pebbles. A top spot for kite and windsurfers, Climping is also a favourite among nature enthusiasts with its nature reserve.

Located just off the Kent border, Camber beach is fortunate enough to proclaim that it contains the only sand dune in the whole of East Sussex. It’s not just sunbathers and kite boarders who can be spotted on this long stretch of beach, for the Hollywood hit Monuments Men, actors George Clooney and Matt Damon were seen filming on the beach.

brighton A top location and must see for many visitors to the south of England is Brighton. Famous for its shingled beach, games arcade and the ruined pier – destroyed in a fire in 2003. Along with being a great location for families, Brighton is a top destination for those seeking nightlife, culture and shopping.

fire it UP!

bbQs Whether you carefully marinade the meat overnight and whip up five different salads or simply stick on some sausages and crack open a beer, there’s a few basics every BBQ will benefit from.

Invest in some serious kit like Weber’s MasterTouch bbq. £269.99 or the Q1200, Portable Blue Barbecue £249.99 www.weberbbq.co.uk/where-to-buy.

Kuhn Rikon’s stainless steel five piece BBQ set comes in a smart aluminium case at around £99. If that blows the budget their Tong Tools are £9.95 – choose from a Fork & Turner or a Fork & Braising Spoon which clip together. For stockists call 01902 458410 or visit www.kuhnrikon.co.uk.

Heck’s 97% pork sausages are guaranteed to go down a storm, £3 a packet from Waitrose, Asda and Tesco. Or for veggies try their nuts About Cheese. Sausages available from selected larger Waitrose stores or via mail order at www.heckfood.co.uk.

£14, www.coconutgrass.com

14 MaYheM! | SUMMER 2016

Do buy decent sausages and burgers. Ok, it may not be possible to buy M&S fi nest if you’re catering for 30 but don’t go for the cheapest option – most people would prefer one decent, tasty sausage and burger than several obviously poor quality ones. Don’t forget vegetarians. Halloumi cheese, veggie skewers and large field mushrooms are great for BBQs and generally go down well even with meat eaters. Use different tongs and a separate part of the grill though to avoid serving your veggie fare dripping with meat fat and defeating the object. Do give a bit of thought to how things are presented. A big dish of ketchup with a spoon is much better than bringing out a crusty, grease smeared bottle while budget supermarket own range coleslaws and potato salads look loads better in attractive bowls. Don’t feel you have to provide everything if you’re inviting friends round. Stock up on rolls, dips, nibbles, salad and a token amount of meat and booze, then it’s reasonable to request a contribution to throw on the grill as well as some beers or a bottle.

It could be used for squash or water but we think this drinks dispenser would also be a handy way of guests helping themselves to punch or a pre mixed cocktail to get the party started! £16 from Sainsburys Keep some hand protection nearby for handling hot tongs or trays (if you’re ‘cheating’ and starting things off in the oven!) like the Butchers Kitchen Single Oven Mitt.

bbQ dos and dont’s

The Ultimate BBQ Hamper, £60 contains everything you need from rubs and spicy sauces to seasonings, ketchups and oil.

Do make sure everything is cooked properly, particularly chicken. you want your guests to remember the event for all the right reasons.

The Blue Vinnie

Deep fried gravy

Blue Stilton and portobello mushroom. Fry off a load of portobello mushrooms in a little butter topped with a strong smelly Blue Stilton you’ll never get a plain burger again….

No I’m not joking. The discs of gravy are breaded and cooked so that when you take the fi rst bite, the warm, molten gravy oozes out and coats the burger. Think of it like the burger equivalent of a soup dumpling.

The mighty Veggie leggie

Two beef patties, aged Cheddar, crispy bacon, garlic mayo, salad, relish and dill pickle. So on top of your already uber-meaty burger you top it off with not one but two beef patties. Incredible. And yet there’s more… crispy bacon, cheese, relish. Warning… heart burn, an inability to move and serious weight gain are likely.

Tempered tofu with a spicy satay, coconut and coriander sauce, lettuce, tomato, red onion, cucumber, pea shoots and aioli. A bit more tricky, but defi nitely worth it. We imagine a BBQ must be pretty bore.com for the veggies out there so… why not try a battered tofu burger with a mouth-warming spicy satay sauce. Refreshed with a light coconut and coriander sauce, cucumber and aioli. N.B – Another great substitute for tofu- haters is falafel, it’s super quick and tastes great.

Kiwi Burger Beetroot, egg, pineapple, aged Cheddar, salad, mayo and relish. Pretty similar to the Aussie burger…but they’re just across the sea. The Kiwi’s are out with the bacon and in with the pineapple, don’t knock not till you try it!

Pork & chorizo with brie and spicy tomato salsa

australian burger

Spicy, meaty and gooey…yum yum! The spicy chorizo sausage complements the meaty burger beautifully, topped off with some gooey brie and refreshing jalapenoes – a Mexican delight.

Goats cheese & caramelised onions A good strong goats cheese, heaped teaspoon of sweet, sticky caramelised onions. A glamorised, quick and easy supplement to the standard cheese and onion topping. MAyHEMMAG |

THEMAyHEMMAGAzInE | MaYheMMagazine.Co.Uk

Slices of pancetta, Cheddar, lettuce, tomatoes, pickled beetroot, eggs sunny side up and, of course, ketchup. We all know the Aussies do it best when it comes down to BBQs. So why not be inspired this summer to ditch the cheese and fry up an egg!

plant a tree

Our planet is overcrowded and with ever an expanding population it’s important we take care in conserving what we have, not only for us now, but for generations to follow. Join Mayhem! in our quest to make the world a better place.

trees produce oxygen, absorb carbon dioxide and help clean our air and soil. without trees humans would not exist. Give something back and plant a tree in your back garden.

reCharge instead of buying lots of conventional batteries, switch to rechargeables and you will save the planet from a lot of hazardous waste.

bottle it! it takes more than 17 million gallons of oil each year to produce bottled water. that’s enough oil to fuel a million cars for an entire year. instal a filter on your tap at home and buy a reusable drinking bottle to carry with you.

dispose eat loCal

instead of driving, try walking, taking the bus or riding your bike. For every four-mile trip you avoid taking in the car, you can prevent approximately 15 pounds of pollution from entering our atmosphere.

Organically grown food may be healthy, but the environmental damage caused by transporting food long distances leaves a large and unnecessary carbon footprint. Studies show that a regional diet consumes 17 times less fossil fuels than a typical diet. try shopping at your local farmers’ market for fresh, in-season goodies. Or better yet, plant some veggies of your own.

Clean green

get e-friendly

Many cleaning products contain harsh chemicals that aren’t good for you or the planet. Did you know that baking soda, vinegar and lemon juice can be just as effective?

Lots of companies have an online option for paying bills which reduces paper waste. if every household in the UK paid bills online, we could save 18 million trees each year.

be effiCient next time you buy an electrical appliance make sure it has the energy Star label. these products can reduce the amount of energy you consume.

Use Cloth instead of using paper napkins and towels, try cloth instead. it’s gentler on the environment and on your grocery budget too!

poWer doWn it’s hard to believe, but lighting alone comprises 5–10 per cent of total energy use. Save energy by turning off lights when you leave a room.

save Water Did you know that for every minute you spend in the shower, you use five gallons of water? reduce your water usage by turning off the tap while you brush your teeth and shortening your daily shower.

Sure, disposable packaging makes life easier in the short run, but it creates lots of unnecessary waste. buy reusable bags and containers to carry your lunch, groceries and other daily items.

get Creative before you throw anything away, think about how it could be used again. Old t-shirts make great cleaning rags. Cereal boxes and egg cartons can be turned into arts and crafts supplies. Slice a mug full of fresh strawberries per drink you’d like to serve, squeeze the juice of half a lime per three drinks. Add a dash of lemonade to help the mixture blend, top up with a mug full of crushed ice and then throw it all into a blender until it reaches the consistency you desire. Garnish with strawberry or lime, again the choice is yours, then serve. staY safe

Let’s talk about sex, baby. Let’s talk about you and me. Let’s talk about all the good things and the bad things, but most importantly let’s talk about all the things everyone should have in the top drawer or their bedside cabinet.

LET’S TALK ABOUT

seX Written by lex brookMan

tissUe (…enoUgh said!) In case someone gets runny nose half way through. Seriously, snot’s not sexy.

Water-based lUbriCant (…to help get things going)

Condoms (…and/ or a lateX free alternative) Surely this goes without saying? Plus, it’s been noted that some people find their partners sexier and more confident when there are condoms to hand – whether you’ve been together for two hours or two years it’s always good to be prepared! If you’ve got a Latex allergy, you’re likely to already know about it and same will go for any partner(s) you have; so don’t worry, they’re unlikely to fi nd out right there and then, tangled in sheets and limbs. Whip out your latex free condoms and get to it! 22 MaYheM! | SUMMER 2016

Water-based lubricant is super important and hella-handy when the time comes. When choosing a lubricant always go for the waterbased option mainly because they’re safe across the board, gentle and should not damage your condoms or any toys you’ve invited along for the ride. Silicone-based lubricants are fi ne to use with condoms (whether regular or latex free) however they cannot be used with silicone toys as this will create a silicone-on-silicone reaction that no one wants to be part of! (Silicone lubricants are also much harder to clean off sheets, clothes etc – just a heads up!) Oil-based lubricants include things like vaseline, which can royally screw up your condoms and any rubber toys you’ve got, but it is a popular choice for those playing solo rather than a two-player option.

But, you could also use the tissue to mop up any other spillages that may or may not occur during the evening’s proceedings. no tissue = wet patch, and no one wants to sleep in the wet patch!

imagination now, no one is saying you have to run down to your nearest sexy-store and pick out something daringly dangerous and no one is saying you have to invest in the whole tome of the Kama Sutra. With that being said, who isn’t up for a little book of handy tips and tricks, sex positions and the like? Or maybe just a pair of dice, complete with interesting suggestions of what and where!? Just something to get the ol’ brain ticking; spice it up! Of course, we’re not saying these are the only things you should have in your sexy top drawer, let your imagination run wild and fi ll it with whatever your heart desires!! Then again, who says you need anything? As long as you’ve got your contraception and consent sorted, then go ahead and get it on!

grooming Because its nice to look nice, eh boys? How you wish to rock your look is down to you, but here are some quick tips to help buff out the edges and keep you looking gorgeous throughout the summer.

tone doWn the aftershave sUnsCreen The best grooming tip only requires a one word introduction. It moisturises, combats sunburn and protects you from the sun’s damaging ultraviolet rays. Make it SPF 30 or higher and pick out one that’s water resistant in case you sweat or take a dip in the sea. That said, remember to keep an eye on your skin, as it’s the best indicator for letting you know if something has gone wrong. Specifically, if you begin to burn, get yourself out of the sun and either apply hydrocortisone to help ease the discomfort or take a cool bath. Other symptoms such as the spread of pigment from the border of a spot into surrounding skin, itchiness, new bumps or nodules can indicate something more serious. If you suspect skin cancer, seek advice immediately. The earlier it is caught, the more effective the treatment. 24 MaYheM! | SUMMER 2016

...but not the deodorant. Invest in a good quality roll-on to keep body odour at bay, but if you overload on the aftershave, it’ll prove far too much for those who come within a half a mile radius of you, since you sweat way more and any smells will simply radiate. Apply sensibly!

best feet forWard Time to get out the flip-flops and sandals that have been collecting dust after a long winter, but before you do, spend some quality time with those tootsies. That means using a pumice stone or exfoliating glove to rub off any dead skin in your daily shower or bath, then slather on moisturiser, pop on some socks and let it soak in while you sink a cold one. And don’t forget to trim your nails, as these tend to get longer much faster with all the extra room that summer footwear give.

shave shave shave! Mostly because it will help keep you cool! Beards are on trend at the moment so if you fancy keeping the face mane then simply tame the beast by shaving around the bulk of the hair, cutting it a little shorter than normal and getting rid of fly-aways. you’ll get much better results if you invest in a good quality electric razor, but if you’re on a budget, wet-shaving is equally effective but does pose more risk of irritation.

Human history, it’s comforting to believe, is on a steady trajectory of self-improvement. As the centuries pass we get better at how we treat ourselves pleather and each other, though this progress is often Pleather is a cheap punctuated by setbacks and the repetition of old substitute for leather, most commonly made mistakes. Here are some of the most common from polyurethane. faux pas’ you’re likely to see around town… Unless you’re allergic to the real thing or are a vegan, you should not be wearing pleather. the most common things to be made from this fabric are knock-off man bags . Aside from anything else, they’re extremely flammable, which should put you off, if being a style pariah doesn’t.

shoes designed for elves, not hUmans An epidemic, this. Cheap shoes with plastic soles and pointy toes that turn up at the end do not look stylish. They don’t even look marginally acceptable. So awful are these shoes that even their ubiquity hasn’t diluted their utter ridiculousness. One, they won’t last longer than a few weeks before the soles burn through (keep a nostril out for the smell of burning rubber, if you don’t feel the crunch of tarmac on your feet first). Two, they make their wearers look like medieval peasants. Or elves. Three, no one will respect you if you wear these shoes. not even other people that wear them.

fraying Jeans The most heinous of all style crimes. Wearing overly long, flappy jeans which have hems that get caught under your heels will not only make you look like Avril Lavigne circa 2002, but wearing these jeans will also result in the hems becoming frayed and giant patches of empty space where denim should be. Slovenly, ugly and downright delinquent.

sagging troUsers Originating in the United States prison system in the 1990s – where belts were prohibited to prevent them being used as weapons or suicide tools – it didn’t take long for the wear-your-trousersbeneath-your-underwear look to spread, predominantly via crime-glorifying hip-hop. Accordingly, since the 2000s, sagging pants has been the go-to expression of misplaced bravado for adolescents across the Western world. Thankfully the trend seems to fi nally be in its death throes, although you still see repeat offenders from time-to-time. 26 MaYheM! | SUMMER 2016

If you’re a bit of a thrill-seeker, adrenalinejunkie, daredevil or just want to try something new and different this summer, why not try one of these extreme sports and create the memories of a life-time. Just remember, if you are planning on taking part in these sports abroad, don’t forget to check you travel insurance for all the T&C’s.

eXtreme

Summer

flyboarding The flyboard rider stands on a board connected by a hose to a watercraft and the water forces pressure under a pair of boots on the board with jet nozzles to push the rider to fly up to an epic 15 meters in the air.

sports

base JUmping This includes a parachute and a wingsuit to jump from fi xed platforms with an unopened parachute like skydiving. BASE stands for Building, Atenna, Span, Earth, which are the four categories of objects which you can jump from.

Waterfall kayaking If neither of those seem as dangerous as you were looking for, then try free-falling into several meters of a rushing waterfall. The current world record is by Tyler Bradt who plummeted a terrifying 57 meters down Palouse Falls in Washington…and survived! 28 MaYheM! | SUMMER 2016

volCano sUrfing This will definitely be something that none of your friends would have done before and tonnes of thrill-seeking fun. One of the most popular spots to do this sport is in Cerro negro in Central America, where riders hike up the 728 meter high active volcano and sit or stand on a plywood or metal board and slide down at speeds of up to 50mph.

slaCklining/ highlining Once you’ve mastered the art of tightrope walking, then slacklining is the perfect sport for you – where it can be as tame or dangerous as you like. To slackline, you can do this by balancing and walking across a tightwire or tightrope, on the beach, in the park, or even between buildings! Just like from Philippe Petit in the 2015 fi lm – The Walk.

soUth Coast Wakepark South Coast Wakepark in Portsmouth covers a wide range of activities such as wakeboarding, kayaking, stand up paddle boarding and zorbing, where prices start from just £20.

sandboarding If you love snowboarding, but want to try something different, why not try sandboarding, where you can ride across or down a steep sand dune, while your feet are strapped to your board. But be prepared to walk back up the sand dune in the scorching sun. There are no ski lift s in the desert!

What the hell is going on?

Us eleCtion

SimPlieD

Can we make America great again? Did you feel the Bern? Are you with Her? On November 8th our American buddies will be voting in their next President for his or her first term. But until then, what exactly is going on?

written by hannah gooding

primarily, the primaries Two parties: Republican and Democrat. A lot of candidates (we’ll talk about the winners and the runner-ups). As of May 3rd, when Ted Cruz dropped out of the race, Donald Trump became official leader of the Republican party. Similarly, as of June 6th, Hillary Clinton became official leader of the Democratic party. On november 8th we’ll fi nd out who is going to be the next President: Trump or Clinton. At the end of April, the majority of states had voted in the Primaries – picking a Republican or Democrat leader (registered Republican can only choose between Republican candidates, same for registered Democrats). Bernie Sanders gave Clinton quite a scare on April 10th when he had 45.8% of voters with Clinton gaining a very close 46.8%. However this was to no avail as he has since lost the Primary, but is none the less very commendable. 30 MaYheM! | SUMMER 2016

Who’s Who? With the campaigns finally in full-swing, the media can pick just one person from both sides to completely slander. Trump is known for his wild personality and often controversial statements “…Perhaps if she weren’t my daughter, I’d be dating her…”, but this has somehow fuelled the fire to get him to lead the party. The majority of Trump’s voters are of the older generation, white, and under the impression that their country is being over run by minority groups. Trump is seen as a man who doesn’t care for censorship and says what “everyone knows is true”, even if that means evidently racist statements and wide generalisations. Think of Trump as the old homophobic racist coot that lives down your road – he’s probably best left alone (and preferably ignored). Unfortunately, this guy has a net worth of about $4.5 billion. His campaign is almost entirely self-funded, and this actually makes him pretty dangerous.

Clinton, on the other hand, had her name in the papers way back when in 1993 when she became First Lady to husband Bill. Scandal after scandal hasn’t really helped her out, she has come across as a little misleading and not all that trustworthy. She does, however, have more of a 21st century mind-set: she wants women to have full, un-changing access to abortions, regulation on gun control and to fund scientific and medical research facilities. Clinton certainly seems more like she’s looking to the future rather than bringing back the past.

What’s going to happen? In short, either America will be run by a reality TV star or an inconsistent politician. neither candidate is especially great; each have various shortcomings that could make you question how it’s legal for them to be running in the fi rst place. Right now it could be seen as picking the lesser of two evils. Until then we can only watch them slander each other on twitter. Put the kettle on and grab a biscuit as we wait for the results.

langUage learning According to a survey by the European Commission, 62% of British people can’t speak a second language. This number is astonishing considering that learning a second language is one of the most beneficial things you can do. Why is that, you ask? Mayhem! is here with four good reasons...

brain boosting

open minds

selfConfidenCe

Learning a second language is one of the best trainings for your brain. When you learn a new language system, your brain recognises patterns, rules and meanings, which improves your reading skills and helps you to negotiate better. Because you learn to switch from one language to the other, you’ll get better at multi-tasking. And the icing on the cake: language learning can even help to stall the beginning of Alzheimer’s or dementia.

Language learning goes hand in hand with learning about other cultures. It’s not just about cramming vocabulary, but about studying and understanding things from other cultural viewpoints. This broadens your horizon and you can consider problems and arguments from many different angles. Basically, you can learn to understand people better not just via their language, but also by knowing about their traditions and beliefs.

If you invest your time in studying a foreign language, you will get better and better at it, which will in turn boost your self-confidence. As mentioned before, seeing things from different perspectives is going to help you form your identity as a person: it will show you how you view things and make you more confident in expressing yourself. Studies have shown that people who speak more than one language are perceived as more intelligent and more attractive!

32 MaYheM! | SUMMER 2016

yoUr first langUage improves If all the above reasons are not enough for you to start, then get this: your native tongue will also improve when you’re learning a second language. As you compare the new language with the one you’re already fluent in, you’ll understand rules and patterns even better, resulting in a more accurate use of your first language. now go on and get out the textbooks! you won’t regret it. A great way to study languages is Duolingo, available for Android and iOS. It gives you small lessons, you can set your own daily target and it has a cute mascot!

take an antihistamine

have a look at home

The most popular type of allergy pill/antihistamine are the oral medications you can pick up in most convenience stores or pharmacists. Buzzwords to look for are Cetirizine Hydrochloride and/or Loratadine. The most popular antihistamines on the market – brands like zirtec or Piriteze! Check out Chemistdirect.com for super cheap medications.

During high allergy season, it might be wise to have a look at a couple of home-hacks to make your life a little easier.

normally you’ll have a choice of drowsy or non-drowsy; if you prefer to take your medication at night pick the drowsy option, otherwise go for non-drowsy. It’s also worth noting that you should check the packages of anything you take as some may suggest steering clear of operating any heavy machinery. Some hay fever sufferers say that decongestants like Sudafed have helped relieve some discomfort during the tougher periods – especially if you fi nd your allergies tend to flare up in your sinuses. As with all medication, it’s important to check in with a pharmacist if you’re unsure about anything.

Rather than cracking open your windows to let some fresh pollen-ridden air in, invest in an AC unit. Be cool, but not crippled with runny noses, coughs and splutters. If you’ve got long hair, try not to brush your hair before you wash it. It sounds strange, but if you’ve been outside you’ll have various pollen related allergens nestled in your hair – cue sneezing fit! Change your sheets more regularly – pollen, dust and other particles can settle onto your sheets and your pillowcases, but keeping them fresh will help. It’s worth keeping a close eye on your bouts of hay fever; when they occur, what symptoms they present and how long they last. If it gets unmanageable and is putting too much strain on your summer, mention it to a doctor – they can prescribe you something a little stronger than something you could pick up in your corner store.

natural remedies broCColi High in vitamin C, broccoli can sometimes relieve allergy symptoms and clear blocked sinuses. However if you don’t like broccoli you could try cabbage or cauliflower, which are part of the same family.

onion and garliC With antihistamine properties, thanks to the high level of quercetin, onion and garlic are sometimes effective in fighting allergies and physical discomfort. They can also help to reduce the inflammation or swelling associated with an allergic reaction.

nUts and seeds Peanuts, cashews, walnuts and almonds are a high source of antioxidant vitamin E and magnesium, that can help ease wheezing and improve lung functions. MAyHEMMAG |

Carrots and pUmpkins These vegetables are rich in carotenoids, the organic pigment that gives them their characteristic colours. Another great source of vitamin C as well as vitamin A and antioxidants. These not only help fight allergies, but can improve your eye health and help prevent heart disease.

herbal teas nettle, chamomile and lemon grass tea are packed with benefits when facing hay fever. By including these in your daily diet, you can help fi ght congestion and inflammation while taking advantage of their natural antihistamine and antioxidant properties.

oily fish Just like nuts and seeds, oily fi sh such as salmon, sardines, trout, and mackerel contain a high levels of omega 3 fatty acids, making them a useful food in the fi ght against hay fever related symptoms.

honey Considered by many people as the best food to fi ght hay fever, honey acts as an allergy desensitiser. Far from triggering allergy reactions, the tiny particles of pollen that honey contains helps immunise the human system against hay fever. Sourcing honey locally to you will ensure it contains pollen from the plants you’re affected by.

breW? Britain is home to the world’s biggest tea drinking population. Over 160 million cups of tea are consumed a day, and that’s just in the UK alone.

40 MaYheM! | SUMMER 2016

As of late, herbal tea has become increasingly popular. not only is the hot beverage delicious, it also provides a number of health benefits such as cleansing the liver, reducing bloating and speeding up the digestive system. in hotter weather it’s tempting to opt for a cooler drink, but studies show that tea actually refreshes the body more effectively. the warm drink raises your body temperature causing you to sweat, which in turns creates a cooling effect on the body. An icy drink may quench your thirst but it won’t reduce your core temperature.

stiCk the kettle on!

From reducing stress to boosting your immune system, there is a herbal infusion out there to soothe every ailment. We’ve selected five refreshing herbal blends that are not only incredibly tasty; they’re also great for your mind and body.

green tea Often hailed as the king of herbal teas and referred to as a ‘superfood’, the benefits that come with sipping this drink are endless. Green tea is made from Camellia sinensis leaves that haven’t undergone the same oxidation as Oolong and black tea has. Loaded with antioxidants, the benefits of drinking include, improving brain function, lowering risk of cancer, increasing fat burning and reducing risk of cardiovascular disease.

Chamomile Before you get into bed, pop the kettle on and make yourself a steamy mug of Chamomile tea. The drink has been used to cure insomnia for centuries. It also reduces stress and calms your muscles, resulting in a blissful bedtime. The tea also promotes healthy skin; you can drink it or incorporate it into a facial scrub that will help get rid of impurities and leave you with smooth, moisturised skin.

peppermint This herbal brew is best consumed in the afternoon when your energy levels have dropped and you’re feeling a little peckish. Peppermint helps to combat food cravings, aid digestion and speed up weight loss. It can also relieve stomach problems such as IBS, stomach aches, diarrhea and constipation. Also, it’s incredibly tasty, refreshing and fi ghts bad breath.

nettle tea The curing, analgesic effect of nettle tea helps to relieve pain. Drinking this grassy beverage will leave you feeling energized and healthy. nettle tea is full to the brim with minerals that help fi ght infections, heal stomach lining, decrease inflammation and lower blood sugars. nettles might long be associated with the stinging variety, but they can actually reduce pain rather than cause it.

lemon and ginger Ginger is renowned for being a digestive herb that tackles nausea and supports healthy digestion. Lemon is high in vitamin C, citric acid and calcium; it helps to balance PH levels and makes the immune system stronger. For a fresh start to the day, sip this tea to release toxins, freshen breath and clear the skin.

stimUlating shades

We all know there’s more to colour than just a treat to the eyes, they often represent and can even influence our emotions. So dig out your old mood rings and read on to find out what hue is best to spark your energy or calm those nerves. 46 MaYheM! | SUMMER 2016

If you’re looking to decorate your office or buy a colourful case for your laptop, but don’t know which colour to go for, try looking towards the blues and greens. Bright blues help to stimulate working performance, mixing calm concentration with happiness, keeping you focused but not feeling dull. Green colouring is known to help calm and positively encourage people to work – hence performers’ Green Rooms. Watch out you don’t go too deep with the shades, as too pastel a shade of green can be chilling, and too deep a blue can make you, well, feel blue.

energising brights Bright yellow and orange are colours that, although sometimes sore to the eyes, are proven to increase a person’s energy levels by expressing happiness and enthusiasm. The sunny delight of a yellow can give you that little boost of energy you feel when you wake up to the sunshine cracking through your window. Orange is an exciting colour that gives you energy and enthusiasm – maybe now you’ll look twice at those neon coloured running shoes? But don’t over do it, too much yellow can induce anger and frustration.

pretty in pink Typically feminine colours like pink and purple can be used to create a joyful, calm environment. When first exposed to a pink shade, people are found to appear a lot calmer. The connotations of romance give this shade a cheerful feeling, although prolonged exposure can be agitating, so don’t go blushing too many permanent fixtures. Purple awakens the creative part of your brain, and a deep, rich tone will induce feelings of luxury. Shades that are too pale could produce a less calming effect, so keep the tones rich.

tUmmy rUmbler Red, an understandably popular colour in restaurants can increase a person’s appetite. A dramatic shade can be stimulating to the body, which creates a lively atmosphere especially when a group is mingling with food. It’s best kept away from bedrooms or living rooms as the wrong circumstances could easily disturb harmony and cause unwanted heat.

neUtrals If you don’t feel like having your emotions controlled by the colour-wheel, then the more modest, less dramatic colours such as creams and browns will suit you with their soft , welcoming tone. Black and white, when used in moderation, will create a steady balance that won’t disturb your emotions, and can be used to help settle the impact of other colours in order to create a peaceful mix.
