Don’t Cry For Us, Argentina By Mark Sheehan We want to applaud your court system now that one of your judges ruled to allow a class action lawsuit to proceed – a suit that demands a ban on the cultivation of GMO plants and the pesticides used with them. Here on Maui, we took a more modest approach, asking for a temporary moratorium until studies prove biotech systems are not harming our lands and people. Your suit was filed on behalf of a child who died from pesticide poisoning, as well as other children diagnosed with leukemia. It asks your government to suspend open air release of GMOs. Your legal language, echoing the tone of the SHAKA Movement ordinance passed by citizens of Maui County late last year, calls for “a ban on the application of pesticides used for farming until their safety for the environment, ecosystems, biodiversity, the health of living beings, the cultural heritage of the Argentine people, and the sustainability of the production model is scientifically proven.” Right on! May we suggest you prepare to deal with a battalion of Monsanto, Dow, Syngenta, et al. attorneys who will try to narrow the scope of the legal argument to technicalities that have nothing to do with the diseases and deaths at the heart of your case? That’s what happened here in Hawaii. On Maui, Monsanto got support from county officials who chose to cooperate with seed industry attorneys instead of defending the will of 23,000 voters. How? When industry attorneys proposed moving our case from state to federal court, our county’s attorneys didn’t object. Then two federal judges failed to consider the health concerns at the center of SHAKA’s case. Instead, they ruled that counties don’t have the right to protect

the public’s health and environment, even though our state constitution says otherwise. The errors in the judge’s ruling are so egregious that SHAKA Movement attorneys already have the case on a fast track to an appeals court in San Francisco. Two similar Hawaii cases are on appeal to the same court, putting Hawaii at the center of the GMO battle in the U.S. The Argentine lawsuit also urges your Legislature to pass a biosafety law, set minimum soil resource standards, and to order the rebuilding and repair of environmental damage caused by GMO farming methods. The remediation would be accomplished through the reintroduction of non-GMO cultivars and wild species, and the rebuilding of soil. If these measures are not possible, the lawsuit requires that the companies be ordered to pay compensation. Bravo, and best of luck. Because colonial/plantation forces destroyed the existing Hawaiian polyculture 150 years ago when the sugar barons overthrew the Kingdom, we too must rebuild and restore our depleted and contaminated soil. We cannot expect the heirs of the exploiters to do this for us. So a new generation of farmers has stepped forward to join native Hawaiian growers to do just that.
This movement has been developing for 30 years, and now we have hundreds of organic farmers, seed exchanges, training programs, farmers’ markets, value-added cottage industries, and soil restoration programs working to revitalize exhausted land. We have been fortunate to have visionary activists who have traveled, learned, and brought back great teachers. Our native growers have shared their traditional methods wisdom so that the Maui Farmers Union United now has two thriving chapters – a positive force to help transition to growing more of our food, rather than importing it. We know the Hawaiians lived and thrived here for a thousand years! As the public has become aware of the extreme dangers of industrial/chemical food production, a back to basics farm movement is sweeping the country. As ground zero for GMOs, Hawaii’s outer islands share a similar fate. So we must protect our air, water and ocean, and work towards a common sustainable future. We are fortunate to have home-grown ‘solutionaries’ with clear plans for carbon capture, soil building, getting healthy foods into our schools, and helping our citizens grow more food for their families. Inasmuch as a two degree centigrade rise is now considered unavoidable, we should all consider what that translates to in sea level rise and plan accordingly. The journey to wellness and health is not always predictable. Just when you think you are on the right track, looking and feeling great, life can pitch you a curveball. Back when I was challenged with cancer in 2006, I stayed calm, realizing my immune system had missed it and had made an error. I chose an exotic and powerful combination of conventional and esoteric treatments, and the tumor miraculously disappeared without a trace. The psychological healing of the underlying “forgiveness” issue, which was at the core, helped also! I don’t often talk about my cancer experience, but I consider myself to be not just a cancer survivor, but a cancer thriver. It taught me a lot about life and living, about slowing down, letting go, valuing people, and stopping to smell the plumerias and to gaze at the starry sky with appreciation. Now I am the healthiest I have ever been, with a good exercise routine, better diet and positive psychological outlook. I am nourishing me – with zero tolerance for toxic, unhealthy relationships. You Are The Answer To Your Own Question
By Jenny Grace Shaw “What’s it like to live peacefully, Ms. Jenny?” “What do I have to do to stop hurting?” “I try to find gratitude in my life, but what’s the point?” “I don’t think there is really such a thing as serenity and balance.” I hear comments like these often, and I’ve asked myself the same questions. What if I told you to stop looking? What if I looked you in the eye, with a caring smile, and asked, “Why do you keep getting in your own way?” “What is stopping you from having everything you want?” What would you do? What would you say? Most importantly, how would you feel? We often avoid looking to ourselves. It’s easier, faster, and less painful to blame others or situations – especially our parents, the greatest culprits of all. Dear ones, let me be clear that I am neither demeaning your pain nor denying that you are hurting. I certainly do not want you to become even more self-critical and beat yourself up for becoming aware that you might be the one in your own way. Rather, I want you to feel extra loved and validated right now, as well as hopeful. If you are the one standing in the way of true long-term health and wellness, indescribable peace, and growth towards life, then that means you are the answer to your own question! You are the solution, not the problem. We are human first. We are microcosms in this macrocosmic world. We hold all traits, which means we are everything. We are both smart and stupid, fat and thin, talented and unskilled, silly and serious, pretty and ugly, liars and honest, greedy and generous, arrogant and humble, angry and elated, afraid and at ease. The list is endless – we are whole-ness. The sooner we embrace this fact, the better. The sooner we look each other in the eyes and embrace how very much we are alike, the sooner we will feel inner peace and balance soaking through our cells straight to the heart center. Oh, what joy to hear! How soothing to know that balanced, peaceful serene living is not a myth. It’s not something we must have enough money to buy, or karma to earn. Choose to wake up a new way tomorrow. Notice every decision you make – what time to get up, which toothpaste to use, how you speak to yourself and others. Notice how your behaviors match or destruct your words. Notice the voices in your head judging while standing in line at Safeway. Notice how you treat yourself when you reflect upon your day. How much do you abuse yourself? How much do you cheer yourself on? How aligned are you with your morals and values? How many times do you abandon yourself, and then become angry with others because you feel they abandoned you? What do you starve yourself of daily? Lovies, balance is not ignoring you. True health and wellness is not only for “others.” It’s waiting for you to invite it in. It’s yours for the taking. It’s mine when I am ready to live in it. It’s ours – absolutely all of ours – to hold, to embrace, to relish, to celebrate, to share, to live in right now. I am finding my Grace. Are you?

Releasing The Grip Of Unhealthy Patterns By Liah Howard Human nature can be contradictory when it comes to health and healing. Often, there is a discrepancy between the values we aspire to and the standards by which we actually live. Many of us seem to have an uncanny ability to overlook some aspect of our life that is unhealthy. It is as if a veil comes down over our consciousness and muffles the wholesome inner voice that says: “No! This is unhealthy! Stop!” Instead, a short circuit occurs and the negative behavior is engaged again. The good news is this: We have choices in life. Patterns of denial can be changed, and a more congruent, healthy lifestyle can be lived. Usually, there is an underlying reason why an unhealthy practice is continued even when a person “knows better.” When the root of the problem is revealed and addressed, then there is hope that a healthy lifestyle can be achieved. Perhaps a few examples will demonstrate my point. I know a heart surgeon who tells all of his patients that smoking, red meat and alcohol are detrimental to the heart. He recommends that his patients moderate or refrain from these three things. In his private life, this respected surgeon eats steaks, smokes cigars, and drinks wine regularly. Another example is a health-conscious friend of mine who is fanatically vegan. Every day he smokes pot and says it is healthy because it is natural. Another friend regularly practices juicing and fasting for optimum health, and then binges on carbs, fats and sugars in between. All
three individuals believe in the value of a healthy lifestyle, and like many of us, the healthy values are incongruent with the unhealthy habits. I can relate to these inconsistencies because I recently changed a similar denial pattern in my own life. Although I know sleep is a valuable part of a healthy lifestyle, I often resisted going to bed before midnight, even though I wake up by 5:00 a.m. most days. After a couple of friends told me that they were concerned about my lack of sleep, I had to admit that it was having some negative

consequences in my life. I was willing to look at the underlying issues. I discovered three beliefs that I had been denying to myself: 1) I don’t like to sleep alone; 2) My body is aging and requires more sleep than in previous years; 3) Sleep is important for rejuvenation. What issues are underlying my denial? First, I’m an identical twin and don’t like to be alone. Second, although I feel 36 inside, I am in my 50s. And third, lost sleep cannot be recaptured. Was I willing to release the grip that these unhealthy patterns and beliefs had over me? Yes, I was. Through rebirthing sessions, hypnotherapy, and a conscious effort to change my sleep habits, I now get to bed earlier. I’ve learned that I’m okay by myself, that sleep is helpful for my older body, and that I can value a good night’s rest. Music Therapy: There’s More To It Than Meets The Ear
By Dr. Douglas J. Price, D.C. Music therapy can be music to the ears when one is looking to find relief from debilitating and chronic diseases. Two vital components help the emotions and the body to move into a healing state, resulting in relief from symptoms. The first is to tune in to original music with the pitch standard for the note A (above middle C) set at the frequency of 432 Hertz, instead of today’s standard of 440 Hertz as is commonly heard on the radio and other listening devices. According to an article posted on the alternative news site, viewzone.com, in 1939 the Rockefeller Foundation discovered that people who listened to 440 Hertz music had a tendency to overwork and become disconnected from their emotions. Secondly, Dr. Hamer, the founder of German New Medicine, discovered in 1978 that the cause of all diseases, except poisoning, is unanticipated and dramatic shock; this activates two phases of the nervous system. The first phase is in the sympathetic nervous system, which is “fight or flight”; this is when we are in a state of conflict and we are trying to resolve our problems, emotionally as well as physically. The second is the parasympathetic nervous system, commonly referred to as “eat and sleep”; this is activated once this conflict is resolved, and we are then able to relax and let go. Dr. Giovani Conti, a professor of music, had a successful recovery from cancer with the help of German New Medicine. As a gifted musician, she was able to understand that the two phases of the nervous system could also be identified in classical music. She then analyzed a song Dr. Hamer had written for his wife, and found that it also encompassed the two phases. The purpose of playing Dr. Hamer’s song repetitively is to maximize patterns and to allow the brain to “naturally” use the universal mathematical format for these two phases of the nervous system. This puts all symptoms, both mental and physical, into “stasis” by bringing both sides of the brain into balance, which then downplays the symptoms and allows the body to heal. This is especially so with chronic conditions. To date, this is the only music that has the complete format to cover both phases

of the nervous system in its entirety. M a n y people have been helped by the music. A little girl with bronchitis, who listened to this music around the clock, found her bronchitis was reduced in one week. She then made a full recovery. Another person with severe psoriasis and lobster red skin saw his symptoms reduced immediately, and in a few weeks his skin returned to normal. In cases of post-traumatic stress disorder,

When the bathroom scale jumps to an unacceptable number, or favorite clothing becomes too tight, we often want a quick fix; enter the fad diet. Beyond The Known
By Adyashanti “All of our ideas, anxieties, and fears are just substitutes for a totally open heart.” What would it require to embrace the full measure of your life, right now? You can’t embrace the full measure of your life – all of it – with your ideas, opinions, judgments, regrets or resentments. All of these cause you to embrace only a small piece of life. You must enter into where it is darkest and least known, where there is no path. And where is that? It’s right here, and right now, at every instant. “The path” is what we think we know. The known is what we think we know, what we believe, the way we have contextualized a given situation or our “self.” That’s the known. And right outside of that is the great silence. If we stop asserting in our minds all of the ideas we utilize, they cease to exist, literally – “What should or shouldn’t happen,” “How I judge you,” or “How you judge me.” These are not there unless you are thinking them into existence. Beyond this is silence. Not a better story. Not a story where you end up being the hero. But instead, the no story, the great liberation from all narratives. That is where we find love. That is where love finds us. Let the silence of the unknown find itself in you. And when there is absolutely no story, then there is nothing to confine the dynamic of love and the deep, exquisite intimacy with existence. The Amazing Power Of Generosity By Paul O’Brien In the early days of my Internet start-up (Tarot.com), I assumed the sovereign archetype and invented my own currency. I called it “Karma Coins,” and it was a radical idea at the time – a way to give registered members the ability to make small payments for do-it-yourself Tarot card readings, I Ching readings and astrology reports – payments too small for a credit card. We also gave out Karma Coins as a signup bonus to get new members. As our first year was ending, I was inspired to give all of our 100,000 members (which grew to 10 million over the next few years) a New Year’s gift of 50 Karma Coins each. It was a gesture born of a generous impulse, but also to see what would happen. I told our IT guy to deposit 50 Karma Coins into each account. On the side, I predicted to our small staff that revenues would take a hit for a few days as a result. Boy, was I wrong! Instead of dropping, sales of Karma Coins almost immediately tripled! After that, I increased the company’s generous giving to our community. We started depositing KCs into members’ accounts on their birthdays, along with a ‘personal’ e-mail from me wishing a happy birthday and telling them about our gift for them. We were experimenting with generosity as business practice, and it had a “Johnny Appleseed” effect. When we launched Karma Coins, Visionary Networks had few employees and was barely profitable. Some thought that giving things away might destroy our chances to grow and prosper. But this experiment was an example of listening to my intuition and a desire to do a good thing for our community, so I expanded the gift-giving in various creative ways.
Other CEOs have also understood the power of generosity. For example, you may recall a recent news story about Dan Price, CEO of Seattle-based Gravity Payments, who pegged $70,000 as minimum wage at his company. He drastically reduced his own pay to balance this out. His rationale was that happy employees are loyal if they are treated generously and have a long-term stake in a business (granted, he held founder’s stock). We all have an ability to think bigger. In my previous blog post on the Tragedy of the Commons, I referenced Charles Eisenstein’s book Sacred Economics: Money, Gift, and Society in the Age of Transition. Eisenstein mentions the possibility of making gift-giving itself into a kind of currency – where “a magical synchronicity of wants and needs” can unfold. It’s a fascinating idea. A coda about Karma Coins: sadly, the practice of giving them away largely ended after I sold the company and bean counters took control. But what I learned from gifting Karma Coins is that when generosity comes from the heart and is in alignment with the collective good, it rebounds to the good of the giver! Even small acts of generosity can grow you while contributing to the greater social good. Let’s challenge ourselves to do at least one generous act a day without expecting anything in return. Generosity is a gift to ourselves … let’s practice it often! Healing Is A Journey
By Maurgana Stiastny Suffering is the nature of being human. We all are born, experience illness and loss, and die. This is a basic precept of Buddhism, and I have found it to be true. Healing is miraculous and can be instantaneous. Someone on his or her deathbed can experience profound healing before departing. More often than not, though, it’s a long road. Health may not always seem fair. Someone with a strong constitution may be able to eat McDonald’s food-like substances, smoke, drink alcohol, and even be lazy; and they may feel fine. While others – usually more sensitive types – who have a perfect diet, exercise, drink plenty of great spring water, and have good sleep and hygiene habits, may still be plagued with maladies. I am an example of someone who has very healthy habits, yet I still have digestive challenges and musculoskeletal issues that come and go. I believe that we all can heal, and that healing is a journey. Ultimately, I believe that it takes everything you have to clear away the obstacles to discovering your full radiant self. You must go to the core of your being and heal the wounds that have been running the show. This is the place where you will get the most traction. We are somatic creatures; we store memories, hold traumas, and carry hurts. The stuff that happens when we are children can really impact our lives, and that needs to be unearthed, looked at and healed. You absolutely can heal your life. It is very important to do what you can to care for yourself; this will allow you to be present, engaged, and able to serve the friends and family around you. By Ann Paquin What can we do when we feel stuck on our healing journey? According to Russ Hudson, co-founder of the Enneagram Institute, we may resort to one of three coping styles for dealing with loss or disappointment. These styles are: positive outlook, emotional realness, or competency. Awareness of these styles can help us shift out of stuck places. The coping style of emotional realness points to the link between our emotions and what is happening in reality. Emotions have a deep intelligence. However, when out of balance, emotions can take over and cloud our view. This is where moving toward another coping style, such as positive outlook, can help us become unstuck. The positive outlook style helps us to look for the good in something and to find new solutions. If you look for something good, you will surely find it. The competency style looks for real and effective solutions. The benefit of this style is that it helps us research what is needed in a situation, leading to increased information that can be helpful on the path of healing. The downside is that a person gravitating toward this style may ignore the intelligence of emotions because they seem messy. Having awareness of a range of coping styles is an asset. Though we may tend to gravitate toward one of these approaches, it’s good to know that we have access to other approaches. Sometimes we fall into the habit of one coping style when another style would serve us better. When we are present, we have access to all of these harmonics (as described by Hudson) as well as body, mind and heart centers of intelligence. A positive outlook can expand into embodying gratitude; emotional realness into unconditional love; and competency into Divine right action. By AnRaNae Cellular memories are the vibrational imprints that get anchored when you experience physical, mental or emotional trauma. This record gets embedded on a cellular level someplace in your body, and it has an accompanying belief attached to it. This is the belief you took on about yourself or about life at the moment you experienced the trauma. Some examples of these beliefs include: “I am not good enough,” “I am unlovable,” or “Life is dangerous.” The combination of the memory and the belief, together, carries a vibration that is continually sent out into the universe. This vibration acts like a magnet that brings to you the next person or event that is a match for that belief, and it is the reason you get triggered when someone says or does something that reminds you of that trauma. It is also the reason why you have personality patterns that do not serve you. For instance, a woman who had an alcoholic father who she loved, but who abused her physically or sexually, may have taken on the belief that “Love is painful.” Because this is the subconscious belief that she holds, she may magnetize relationships with men who are alcoholics and abusive to her. These experiences reinforce her belief that “Love is painful.” This pattern will continue until she finally desires to be free, and seeks healing to release this belief and pattern. True and ultimate healing is possible when these cellular memories and false beliefs are dissolved, and replaced with true beliefs. Examining Trauma And Safety
By Brad J. Kammer, MFT, LPCC, SEP After Hurricane Katrina devastated the Gulf Coast, I traveled there as part of a trauma outreach team. I had been following news reports of looting, violence and dislocation. Having worked in refugee camps on the Thailand-Burma border, I understood how trauma could so immediately overwhelm people and communities that they would turn against each other in violence. But I also understood that in our most overwhelming crises, people also come together for protection, safety and healing. If we look to the animal kingdom for clues, we find numerous examples of herds of animals that, when threatened or attacked, do not immediately fight or flee, but come together as bands. We see this beyond mammalian herd behavior – for instance, flocking of birds, shoaling of fish, and the swarming behavior of insects. When threatened, our senses are heightened and we scan the environment for the source of threat. However, part of this is an orientation to the herd. If others are there for us, we will come together in numbers to better assure protection and safety. And if not, we will move rapidly into fight, flight or freeze responses. We humans are programmed to connect and collaborate for survival; this is the “tend and befriend” survival response. If we trigger states of wellbeing through personal connection, we promote psychological and physical health. Understanding the avenues for resolving the fight, flight and freeze states is essential in effective trauma treatment, but it’s important to look for disrupted tend and befriend states as well. To many cultures, the loss of connection with others equates to the loss of one’s self. Relationships might just be the best medicine. Nurturing Touch Benefits By Frances Salvato “He says he only really knows who he is when he is on your massage table,” my long-term client said when she told me she was getting divorced. This couple seemed to have it all, so I was surprised. As an ethical touch professional familiar with how our culture sometimes confuses bodywork with sex work, I was concerned at first that she was accusing me of crossing boundaries with her husband. It turned out she was just trying to figure out what happened. It was not shocking to me that my client’s husband connected knowing himself with getting massaged. As the psychologist Alexander Lowen states, “To know who one is, the person must be aware of what he feels.” Throughout my career as a massage educator, I have observed that many choose to make major life changes after receiving increased nurturing touch. In Chicago, we had a joke amongst faculty that going to massage school might end your marriage. We observed many students making radical transformations while attending the program. A common theme was that they had not received a lot of touch prior to school, and that touch ‘woke them up to themselves.’ Benefits of massage include increased self-awareness and improved body functions. Scientific evidence shows that touch is more important for health than food. In children, touch deprivation and malnutrition symptoms are the same. In the parent-child relationship, touch stimulates hormones that encourage maternal behavior. Numerous studies demonstrate that ‘gentling’ results in better coordination, calmer dispositions, and quicker learning. Massage is a proven remedy for stress and pain, and it does not fog the brain or stress the liver like painkillers and muscle relaxants. In our culture of high tech isolation, touch is a remedy that keeps us connected to our humanity and may help us know our heart’s desire. Examining Posture’s Role By Elizabeth Crow I didn’t think much about posture until I had a series of appointments with an Egoscue trainer. I was referred to the method because of an injury that wouldn’t heal. Not only did that heal, but my chronic low back pain did as well. These days, when I do my Egoscue exercises, my day flows better. Posture, indeed, seems quite relevant to health. This quote from the Egoscue University bears repeating: “All the body’s systems function interactively. Their ability to function normally depends to a large extent on postural alignment and the body’s ability to move as it was designed to move. The nervous, cardiovascular, digestive, respiratory, metabolic and immune systems are all dependent, to a large extent, on musculoskeletal function.” We have to consider gravity when we consider posture, and our relationship to it. The body is not straight, but full of curves and beautifully designed angles; but the skeletal system as a whole should be aligned vertically “straight” up and down. There should also be symmetry from front to back, called dynamic tension, and from left to right, referred to as balance. Here are some tips: 1. Become aware of where your body is in space. Notice your positioning when driving, sitting, waiting in line. Stand against a wall and feel what areas are touching the wall. Get to know the habituated patterns of your positioning. 2. Think about how any pain you may experience relates to your posture. Most common symptoms that the Egoscue clinics see are: back pain (especially low back), knee pain and hip pain. 3. Take breaks from sitting. Incorporate a few simple Egoscue exercises. Remember, bones go where muscles tell them to go. Most of us need to “wake up” our shortened hip flexors, give our erectors a break, and restore proper length tension to likely unengaged upper back muscles. By Maribeth Theisen As I tour France, Italy, Sicily and Croatia, I learn travel teaches balance. Life on the road challenges a healthy routine. How do you eat? Exercise? Recharge? Do you feel like you have to go-go-go? Is it cheating to take a breather? As I sit overlooking the Mediterranean, I am having an interlude after three days of exploring, hiking and boating. Meditation, yoga, rest, laundry and salad fixings await. Rebooting will make this evening’s swim, kayak and dancing fun. I’ll be energized for the drive to Rome. Tips for a balanced trip: 1. Bring foods that energize; limit those that don’t. I allow pasta or gelato only once a week. Keep healthy snacks in the backpack. 2. Bring your yoga mat. 3. Get up 15 minutes earlier to meditate and visualize your day. 4. Honor your bio-rhythms. If you need a couple hours in midday to re-energize, plan accordingly. 5. Move your body. Walk, paddle, bike and swim when you can. 6. Commune with nature. Even large cities offer parks with a shady tree or refreshing river. 7. Reach out and discover how others live. My new Irish friends in Italy shared about the resurgence of Gaelic traditions in Ireland. Locals love to share about great sights and restaurants. 8. Try new things, too! Sample the region’s unusual food. Meander down an alley to view historic houses. Notice how the natives dress, eat and dance. Go to a concert, psychic fair, bike race or opera. The bottom line? As in your normal life, balance your energy and rest times, your routine and unfamiliar experiences. Remember, enjoy the journey. Bon Voyage! By Judy Levy I was 10 when we went to Disneyland for the first time, and I was exposed to Monsanto’s propaganda at that early age. Remember Tomorrowland’s “Better Living Through Science” pavilion? This futuristic glimpse into a “modern efficient time” promised that chemistry and science would enhance our lives. We have been conned by dangerous propaganda for over 50 years! Somehow, I resisted the programming of television and the mainstream mindset as I grew up. Unblocking Your Success

Energy psychology describes a phenomenon called psychological reversals. Reversals block your ability to achieve your conscious goals. Feeling Really “Seen”
By Debbie Dehm To really feel “seen” by another person for who you truly are is a profound and powerful experience, as we see in the movie Avatar. There is nothing more validating than knowing that someone else really gets you, and likes you for it. Of course, this has nothing to do with how you look on the outside; rather, it is when someone sees your soul, your essence, what makes you tick. If you are a light worker, you may not always get recognized as that, and you may sometimes feel isolated and lonely in your work. My advice is, get out there in the public; stop hiding your light, and then see what happens. You will be surprised. I have had some experiences lately that truly blew my mind. One happened as recently as yesterday. I have been working at Queen Ka’ahumanu Center giving chair massages for a while now. Sometimes I don’t want to be there, but then something amazing will happen and I feel so glad I have been staying in this job. I see hundreds of people every day and they see me, but do they really? Well, some of them do. I have seen monks walk by and bow to me, with hands folded in Namaste. Some people who I don’t know at all have come up and thanked me for everything I do for the community. Yesterday, a young lady about 14 years old walked up to me and told me I was the most beautiful person she had seen that day. I thanked her and gave her a hug. Wow! It is great to be seen. So, stop hiding; get out there and shine your light. Many people see you and appreciate you for who you are.

Helping Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
Our Path Toward Wellness
By Erin Elster, D.C. You are working at your desk, trying to ignore the tingling or numbness you have had for months in your hand and wrist. Suddenly, a sharp, piercing pain shoots through your wrist and up your arm. Is it just a passing cramp? More than likely, you have Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (CTS), a painful, progressive condition caused by nerve compression. CTS results from impingement of the median nerve, which runs from the neck, down the arm, then through bones in the wrist (carpal tunnel), to supply the hand and thumb. Irritation to this nerve often results in numbness, tingling, pain, loss of grip strength in the hand and thumb, and radiating pain from the neck down the arm. CTS most commonly occurs after repetitive use of the arm, wrist, hand and fingers during work or leisure activities. While traditional medical treatment for chronic CTS cases involves surgery performed at the wrist, many patients are looking for non-surgical approaches. One consideration for CTS sufferers is to undergo a cervical (neck) evaluation from a qualified cervical chiropractor. If cervical vertebrae are displaced through trauma or overuse, impingement of the nerves involved in CTS can occur. Unless the cervical misalignment is addressed, CTS symptoms may persist. Many CTS patients are successfully treated with chiropractic care administered to the cervical spine. The number of treatments required per individual varies according to the severity of the cervical injury and symptoms. The first visit to a cervical chiropractor usually involves a spinal exam and diagnostic tests, such as cervical x-rays and thermal imaging. From there, the practitioner will determine a care plan. Patients usually notice an improvement in symptoms during the first days or weeks of treatment. Connecting The Gut And Brain

Out-of-Body Experiences Demystified
By Luis Minero An out-of-body experience (OBE) occurs when the seat of the consciousness temporarily travels outside the physical body to another location and/or another dimension. Demystifying the OBE means showing that this phenomenon is not so much a special gift, or even a stage of enlightenment, but a naturally occurring mechanism that can be developed. OBEs occur to all of us. Have you ever been woken up in the middle of the night by a jerking sensation, as if you just fell into your bed with great force, even though you were sleeping and your body did not move? This is an example of the astral body disconnecting from the body during sleep, and then suddenly being pulled back. The reason it seems so few people experience and report OBEs generally is the lack of awareness and control during sleep, and most also do not remember having them. We all disconnect from the body regularly, but we rarely become conscious when doing so. When we learn to gain self-awareness and control over the astral body, we can really take advantage of this phenomenon. With some training, and through studying techniques and information about OBEs, the disconnection process, the astral body and dimensions, anyone can learn to do it. Awaken The Healer Within
By Shalandra Abbey Good health can be defined as the unobstructed flow of natural energy through a living system. This has far-reaching implications. It suggests that eliminating blockages is a key to maintaining a healthy system. The healer is a woman or man who has the power to restore others to their natural states of health. The healer’s touch is like morning sunlight touching a bud and calling forth a flower. Our body’s ability to heal is far greater than anyone has permitted us to believe. It is important to make good healing choices. Older people are simply people who have lived longer. With a little bit of wisdom, information and effort, we may enjoy our years to come and brighten the lives of those around us, as well as our own. In 1988, I thought I was healthy until someone suggested I go for a Reiki treatment. My inner knowing revealed that there was much more to healing than what I had been told. I woke up on all levels, and left the corporate world and moved to Hawaii to become a full-time Reiki Master. After 20-plus years of observing Reiki Natural Healing heal things that I was convinced were impossible to heal, I receive deeper and deeper levels of healing for myself. GMO seeds and plants are “RoundupReady.” This means that they can be sprayed with Monsanto’s Roundup herbicide and survive the poisoning, while their neighboring weeds die. Roundup and many other herbicides are metal chelators. The chemical ingredient that
does the chelating is known as glyphosate. This means that chelating chemicals bond to mineral elements in the soil, bacteria and other microorganisms, plant cells, and animal cells, including human cells, as well as the proteins and enzymes within those living organisms. When the minerals – such as iron, magnesium, manganese, calcium and zinc – in organic molecules and within the cells of living organisms are locked up by glyphosate, they cease to function; health deteriorates and death can ensue. In other words, glyphosate destroys enzymatic and physiological functionality, causing nutritional deficiency or terminal malnutrition of the bacteria we need in our soils and our gut, the plants, their fruits, and humans and all animals in the food chain who eat the tainted foods. Hawaii is home to one of the world’s greatest concentrations of GMO research fields by five of the largest biotechnology and chemical companies: Monsanto, Dow AgroSciences, Syngenta, DuPont Pioneer and BASF. soybean, corn and other crop breeding and seed multiplication activities performed by Monsanto and some of the other biotech giants. Many say that Hawaii is “ground zero” for GMO research. These companies make poison and promote the poison foods industry. For almost two decades, they have been growing test crops on Maui and Kauai with some of the most dangerous synthetic pesticides used in agriculture today. And what is the Maui legislature, the Department of Health, the Food and Drug Administration, and the U.S. Surgeon General doing about this, as the health of Americans, which is already in a calamitous state, slides further downhill? Why is the science behind this not regarded as simply common sense and obvious? Why are the rising disease statistics not yet alarming? Learning To Fully Embrace What Shows Up By Bodhi Be trag·e·dy an event causing great suffering, destruction, and distress, such as a serious accident, crime, or natural catastrophe. Given the wide spectrum of events that define tragedy here, you either have experienced tragedy, or you likely will. How do some people recover from tragedy and thrive, while others never fully recover? And what does ‘recover’ mean after something happens to you that changes you in some deep and profound ways? In our efforts to run from suffering, avoid pain and discomfort, ‘fix’ everything so we can ‘feel good,’ do we rob ourselves of what may deepen and broaden our own hearts and our abilities to access compassion for others? While many pray to see the end of suffering, in looking at our lives, is it not those times we suffered that were the most powerful times of shift in our ways of being and seeing? Sometimes the worst day of your life turns out to be the best day of your life. Last night I received a call from a dad in the hospital, sitting with his wife and their 19-weekold son who had just died. On one level, this is a tragedy – something mom and dad will carry for the rest of their lives. Many ‘why’ questions arise – did they do something wrong, could they
have done something different, is it their fault, does it have to do with past life karma, did they somehow ‘create’ this, are they being punished, and on… Did this soul only need such a short time to incarnate? Working with the dying and their families, I have heard all of these questions raised, and more. There are no simple

explanations, and often times we barely see the larger picture playing out. When a woman came to the Buddha, wailing away, as the story goes, she asked the Buddha to heal her child who had just died. Given that impermanence is a fact, that all things will change, can we learn how to live in the uncertainty and precariousness of it all? Is the art of living the art of fully embracing what shows up, and being willing to let go into the ‘not knowing’? We have but two choices. We can imagine that by armoring our hearts, we will never again be vulnerable to the changes and pain that hurt so deeply. The downside here is that armoring hardens the heart to letting love in, and it turns people bitter and lonely. Or, we can somehow continue to soften and open.
