Film Claims Trust Enables GMOs

By Mark Sheehan Soul Food - yum! But soul-less food? It’s coming! Like most of our grains which are already GMOs, new fish strains are being modified genetically along with some veggies. Is this for feeding the hungry or thinning the herd? Is it a blessing or blight? Every day brings more news about the dangers of GMOs. Biotechs claim that they are helping to feed the hungry by improving crop yield, but news reports prove them wrong. In 2008, a team of 900 scientists funded by the World Bank and United Nations reported that GMO crops are not only ineffective at fighting world hunger, they also found that Monsanto’s seeds were outperformed by traditional ‘agro-ecological’ farming practices. Through rigorous analyses, the international team showed that GMOs are not a meaningful solution to fighting hunger. And another report explains how a tiny root worm is busy eating away at GM corn, forcing the chemical companies to dump even more toxins on the crops! How strange is it that even as Michelle Obama is promoting healthy school lunches, her husband has embraced the GMO industry, promoting its former executives to high offices in the FDA and Department of Agriculture? Since Monsanto’s goal seems to be total control of the world food supply, the impacts are horrendous. If you saw Bitter Seeds at the Maui Film Festival, you saw the price paid by farmers in India who committed suicide after their bioengineered crops failed and they were unable to pay their bills. Hawaii’s role in the GMO controversy is told in a new, short film you can find on YouTube: Stop Poisoning Hawaii. The film claims that Monsanto, Dow, Dupont/Pioneer, Syngenta and BASF own or lease 40,000 to 60,000 acres in Hawaii and have conducted over 5,000 experiments here over 20

years. And, surprisingly, the film also tells about Kamehameha Schools’ involvement. A $9 billion educational trust, Kamehameha Schools was set up in 1883 through the will of Princess Bernice Pauahi Bishop. According to Stop Poisoning Hawaii, the trust currently leases about 1,000 acres on Oahu for growing GMOs. On its website, the trust states “We take our kuleana (responsibility) to steward our lands and natural resources very seriously. We manage our Hawaii lands, natural resources, water resources and wahi kupuna (ancestral places) to optimize the balance of educational, cultural, economic, environmental and community returns.” Their undeveloped land (over 363,000 acres) is split amongst agricultural and conservation holdings that the trust claims support diversified agriculture and sustain rural communities. Numerous calls to Kekoa Paulsen of the Kamehameha Schools public relations department to verify the facts exposed in the Stop Poisoning Hawaii film about the Oahu land leases were met with silence. Given their mission to preserve and protect the aina, how does this $9-billion-asset mega-trust and the state’s largest land owner justify leasing lands to grow GMO crops in light of the many reports of

chemical toxicity (though overspray and runoff) sickening nearby neighbors who are unwittingly exposed to unknown substances? Maui’s Auntie Puanani Mahoe, a Kamehameha graduate, says “GMO is not right. It is not pono to mess with the laws of nature.” She is upset that the trustees of Kamehameha Schools have also failed to study the risks associated with genetically modified experiments being conducted. Hawaiian recording artist Makana was more blunt in criticizing Kamehameha Schools. In the film he says, “Tell me how Hawaiians are benefiting? Is it because the money generated through poisoning the land is going to their education?” Outside of Hawaii, Millions against Monsanto is conducting a nationwide campaign to mobilize massive public support to demand labeling of all GM foods and to restrict the widespread use of these crops and the tons of chemicals used on them. Over 900,000 Californians signed a petition for an initiative that will be on the ballot this fall. Success in requiring labeling in California will have a huge impact nationally. ResponsibleTechnology.org may be the best single site to learn how the movement has gained national momentum and may be reaching the tipping point. Jeremy Smith’s book, Seeds of Destruction is a thorough primer. Locally, GMO Free Maui (gmofreemaui.org) is a good starting point to get involved. Maui activist Courtney Bruch and her predecessors over the past 14 years have been relentless in attempting to apply pressure to the powers that be to make a safer, more sane, and natural food supply for us all. Silence Is Golden

I sit in silence in a field that recently grew GMO corn about two miles from my home. I think about the famous Maui Red Dirt beneath me that hosted the growth of a brilliant scientist-inspired life form that is “substantially equivalent” to real corn, but isn’t really 100 percent equivalent due to altered genetics. As the afternoon wind picks up, as it frequently does, the red dust blowing off the GM cornfield makes a quick transit to neighboring homes and high-end resorts just across the highway. It seems innocuous, but it isn’t. It is heavily chemically laden red dust, coating everything in its path. It causes untold health problems to resort workers, nearby residents and tourists alike, as it coats their properties. As they breathe, their throats are coated with a strange combination of red dust and experimental agricultural chemicals. Scratchy throat, you say? Do you have a headache? Are you feeling light-headed, unfocused? Maybe down the line, thinking a little cancer might develop? In silence, I wonder who owns the land, and who is growing the corn. I sit quietly, lost in thought. I think about Kamehameha Schools. I think about their public relations department, given multiple opportunities over several weeks, who refused to tell their side of the story to Maui Vision Magazine (and our readers) when we asked to verify facts about their ownership of land on Oahu currently growing GMO crops. Are they ashamed? Are they afraid of public opinion? Are they in bed with GMO companies, and are unable and unwilling to kick them off their lands? Do they have legal liability to protect their billions from lawsuits brought on by poisoned neighbors? Their silence, also, is golden. - Eric T. Richter, publisher

Which Lane To Drive Through?

When you have once seen the glow of happiness on the face of a beloved person, you know that a man can have no other vocation than to awaken that light on the faces surrounding him. . . . - Albert Camus

By Alan Cohen My friend Kane went to the airport to pick up a revered rabbi. As the two drove toward the tollbooth plaza to exit the airport parking lot, Kane had to choose between an automatic-payment lane and one manned by an attendant. “Take the lane where you pay a person,” the rabbi urged him. “Why is that?” asked Kane. “Any opportunity to make contact with another human being is a blessing,” the rabbi explained. The more we fill our hunger for gadgets and labor and time-saving devices, the deeper our hunger for human connection grows. We are well fed materially but undernourished spiritually. Many people are depressed because they miss their sense of person-to-person contact and do not know how to find it. Anything you can do to personalize your life and your work will yield huge rewards to you and those you touch. When I recently phoned a computer company to order a part, for example, I was placed on hold. Meanwhile, a message announced: “Please take a deep breath and relax. We’ll be with you as soon as possible.” The suggestion to take a deep breath came as a pleasant surprise to me, and I followed the advice. I recognized that whoever ran that company valued humanity, and wanted to pass ease along to their customers. This inspired me to make my purchase from this company and remember it the next time I needed a part. At another time, I had to phone my bank about an error it had made. I usually don’t like calling this bank because they put callers through a long impersonal mechanical option process. On this day, however, I quickly reached an agent named Joe, who was very congenial. Joe suggested that I phone back in a day or two to make sure the correction had registered. “But I won’t be here after next Monday,” he added. “I’m going to China.” “For vacation?” I asked him. “Actually, I’m getting married. I met a Chinese woman online and I’m headed for my wedding” he replied. Cool. “How long have you been dating?” I asked. “For a year—but we’ve never met in person. Just online and via phone. But we love each other and I know we’ll be happy together.” I was tickled. “Wow, I want to hear how your wedding goes.” “I’ll call you when I get back,” he told me. A month later, Joe phoned and gave me his successful wedding report. I sent him and his bride one of my books. That was the best bank interaction I have ever had! Every day offers a series of choices. The next time you must decide between a machine and a person, remember the rabbi’s advice. There are always two lanes to drive through. The one we choose makes all the difference in the world. Maui resident Alan Cohen is the author of many inspirational books, including the new Enough Already: The Power of Radical Contentment. How Much Love Do You Bring To Each Moment? By Liah Howard I recently read an intriguing story about a woman who clinically died and experienced a vision of the other side. In Lessons From the Light, author John Mulkey describes how Myra Starr was given the opportunity to review her life and realized that all of her experiences on earth, no matter how big or small, boiled down to one thing: how much love had she brought into each moment. Being free of her body, she experienced a deep peace and shimmering radiance of light and love. This awareness of herself as a light-being made her realize that those things that she thought sustained her in life really did not and instead, every moment she felt or expressed love increased her light-body and fed her soul. While the doctors worked on reviving Myra’s body, she floated with her spirit guides, who revealed images of her life where she had been kind, cruel, or apathetic. Her corporate job required her to fire a lot of people and she was shocked to discover how insensitive she had become and how dim her heart-light was when she was unloving. When she awakened back in the emergency room, she vowed to change her life, open her heart, and love others rather than hurt them. At first she tried to go back to work, but found that she was unable to silence her heart during the firings. So she quit her job and went into the healing arts instead. She embraced the spiritual side of herself, which had been grossly

neglected in her climb up the corporate ladder. A doorway of communication to her spirit guides opened up and she started following their guidance. Her life became more heart-centered and less head-centered. Her guides taught her how emotions play a part in the health and well-being of an individual and how, if a person is not following their soul’s path and feeding their souls, their bodies get sick. She learned that self-love, love of others, and forgiveness are key to a person’s healing and

provide the best light for the soul. The trauma of a near-death experience catapulted Myra to discover how hungry her soul had been and to make drastic changes in order to feed it. But we don’t have to suffer traumatic events to become more soulful in our lives. At the end of the day, we can reflect on whether we’re feeding our souls with love and light. Have we been heart-centered in our interactions with others? We’re all inter-connected and invested in one another’s well being, so bringing love to others is a profound way of feeding our own souls. Remember also to listen to what your soul needs, for there are times when it’s best to focus on nurturing yourself to keep your spirit charged. That might mean time alone to listen to music, or visiting a place in nature where you can feel your soul smiling in the beauty and peace; or maybe you need more fun and excitement, like a trip abroad or dancing under the stars. Find out what makes your soul feel happy and light and add more of those moments to your life. In this self-reflection, you will build a life that nurtures and sustains your inner light. When you die and have your own life review, you will smile to see how you have fed your soul and be blinded by how dazzling you really are! GM Foods And Tainted Milk The Cause?

Can We Blame

By Vanessa Wolf GMOs, or genetically modified organisms, are plants and animals whose genetic material has been altered through recombinant DNA technology. In the words of the World Health Organization, GMOs are “organisms in which the genetic material has been altered in a way that does not occur naturally.” Genetically modified or biotech foods are those created from genetically modified organisms. Most genetically modified food products are plant-based, the majority being soybean, corn, canola, rice, and cottonseed oil. Other GM crops currently allowed in the U.S. food and feed supply are alfalfa, chicory, cotton, flax, papaya, potato, rice, squash, sugar beet and tomato. Animal products have also been developed, although there is no indication that any of them are currently on the market for human consumption. In February 2012, Internet alarmists reported falsely that WalMart had agreed to carry Monsanto’s genetically modified sweet corn to be sold as whole ears-on-the cob as early as this summer. Originally, Monsanto promised the corn would only be used for feeding livestock. Since genetically modified food has been introduced in other forms into supermarkets, and the U.S. government does not require identification of these products, there has been much debate as to whether they’re actually safe. The controversy surrounding the Monsanto-created sweet corn is that it is engineered to contain the Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) toxin, which protects the plant and the corn by poisoning the stomachs of insects, killing them. Monsanto, also the makers of Agent Orange, claims that the Bt toxin in the plants and corn breaks down when humans consume it, but activists are not entirely convinced. On their website, Sumofus.org sites research claiming that “rats fed with the GM corn showed organ failure, and the toxin has been detected in the bodies of pregnant women.” At the same time, most of us have been ingesting Bt toxin for decades, as it’s currently legal for commercial application as an insecticide on corn, potato, tomato and rice crops right up until the moment of harvest. The long-term effects of the Bt toxin-treated products aren’t known. Villagers living near a corn farm utilizing Bt toxin in the Philippines have had significant respiratory, digestive system and skin problems. Animal researchers have discovered that Bt toxin is active in other mammals. It doesn’t break down during their digestion processes, and can adhere to intestinal walls. On the other hand, the Environmental Protection Administration (EPA) determined that Bt toxin is digested in the human stomach. However, although the tests were carried out in laboratory conditions, the results were not repeatable. Monsanto, the primary purveyor of genetically modified seeds and the makers of Agent Orange states, “Food derived from geneticallymodified (GM) crops is as safe as conventional food. There’s no need to test the safety of DNA introduced into GM crops. Because existing food crops are recognized as safe, the logical starting point for safety assessment of a GM food is to ask ‘what’s different?’ All GM crops are compared to non-GM counterparts in order to determine whether they have similar concentrations of proteins, carbohydrates, fats, amino acids, and other components. Two crops which are alike in all respects are said to be “substantially equivalent.” “What’s different?” indeed. The reality of GMOs is that we really don’t know. There’s no law requiring safety testing for GM foods or laws requiring their labeling so consumers can make an informed choice. The long-term risks of genetic modification are a total mystery. On the environmental and economic fronts, opponents believe that GMOs will reduce the diversity of plants and result in the domination of world food production by a few big companies who control the seeds. Ecosystems may be altered as fish are engineered and beneficial insects potentially wiped out along with crop-destroying insects. Genetically modified foods also place a burden on organic farmers, whose crops are sometimes contaminated by GMOs from neighbor-

Monsanto For Our Defective Kids?

ing farms. They may find it difficult – if not impossible – to detect contaminants in the seeds they buy. Because genetic combinations that aren’t possible in nature occur in the genetic engineering labs, critics are concerned that technologically altering our food may have far-reaching, as yet undetected, impacts on human health and the environment. While food and GMO producers and the government work under the assumption that if the original foods were safe, the new product will also be safe, opponents believe that may not necessarily be true. As much as there is a lack of conclusive evidence implicating the dangers of GMOs, there are also alarming numbers of coincidental facts, particularly the skyrocketing rates of chronic health conditions amongst our nation’s children. Genetically modified foods went on the market in 1996. In 2008, the Centers for Disease Control reported that “the number of young people who had a food or digestive allergy increased 18 percent between 1997 and 2007.” Because of the unidentified foreign DNA, GMOs may introduce known – or even unknown – allergens into a child’s food. Simultaneously in the mid-1990s, Monsanto began marketing Posilac, or synthetic bovine growth hormone, to dairy farmers. The product, created from genetically engineered E. coli, caused lactating cows to produce up to 10 percent more milk, increasing farmers’ profits. It’s quite possible that byproducts of, or Prosilac itself, ended up in the milk supply unwittingly consumed by U.S. children, perhaps also causing allergic reactions, or “super-sized” kids. Posilac has been banned in many countries around the world, but not in the United States. For parents facing the multiple issues associated with autistic, allergy-prone, or obese children, who do they blame? A parent is unlikely be able to identify the cause. There is even concern that when a new gene is introduced into a plant that it is possible to create an entirely new allergen. This may lead to never-before-seen and unidentifiable allergic reactions in susceptible people, particularly children. In December 2009, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control reported that rates of autism were as high as 12 cases per 1,000 children. That’s

compared to a national rate of 1 per 2,000 children prior to the 1980s, and 6 per 1,000 children in the 1990s. Although perhaps just coincidence, skyrocketing autism rates coincide perfectly with the introduction of genetically modified food. There are also other disorders that have been on the rise since the introduction of GM food that may be induced from a “leaky gut syndrome,” including a huge increase and severity in allergic reactions to food substances, asthma, gastrointestinal disorders, and debilitating syndromes such as chronic fatigue syndrome and fibromyalgia. The rate of chronic health conditions among children in the United States increased from 12.8 percent in 1994 to 26.6 percent in 2006, particularly for asthma, obesity, and behavior and learning problems. These alarming increases are not found in other countries, just ours. Autism statistics of those countries that do not consume or clearly label genetically modified food products bear this out. Ronnie Cummins of the Organic Consumer Association wrote, “There are almost no GMOs in Europe because, under EU law, as demanded by consumers, all foods containing GMOs or GMO ingredients must be labeled. Consumers have the freedom to choose or not to consume GMOs, while farmers, food processors, and retailers have (at least legally) the right to lace foods with GMOs, as long as they are labeled.” A 2009 comparison of the prevalence of autism in other countries showed autism in France was four times lower than the U.S. In Iceland, rates were found to be seven times lower. Finally, in Denmark, another country with mandatory labeling requirements, the autism rates were 14 times lower than in the United States. When GMOs hit shelves in the mid-1990s, they were included in infant formulas (a list that currently includes Enfamil, Isomil, Similac, Carnation and even Gerber products) and most processed foods. Again, these baby formulas and foods are not labeled, and the effects of GMO foods in pregnancy, in utero, and in infancy are entirely unknown. There has only been one human study on GMOs. In 2004, scientists at the University of Newcastle in the UK set out to study the survival of an altered gene found in genetically modified soy in the small intestine of volunteers with a colostomy bag. They found that the gene can survive in the small intestine and that low-frequency gene transfer to microflora in the volunteers’ digestive tract may have occurred – results which anti-GMO advocates feel should have prompted additional testing. What effect might this have on a developing fetus or small child? No one knows! Awareness is the first step. Although there is no conclusive evidence either way, it is clear that childhood allergy and autism rates have been skyrocketing since the introduction of GMOs into the American food supply. The only way to avoid genetically modified products is to only buy organic foods, but even that’s no guarantee. Some genetically altered pollen could make its way into an organic field and the resulting produce could wind up being harvested and sold as organic. Moreover, because of the massive use of genetically engineered ingredients in the food supply, it is currently impossible for even companies such as Whole Foods Market to avoid GMOs in conventional or “natural” products. As a result, many food products sold at natural grocery or health food stores contain unidentified genetically engineered ingredients, even when the retailers would prefer otherwise. In other words, unless it’s organic – and even, potentially, if it is – be aware your processed food probably contains GMOs. Whether referred to as genetically modified, biotech, transgenic or even “frankenfoods,” GMOs are a daunting and even intimidating topic because we don’t really know the long-term consequences. Whether conspiracy theory or fact, GMOs may be harmless or they may be damaging our food supply and our health in long-term and irreversible ways we haven’t yet detected. I Say It’s An Inside Job

By Maribeth Theisen When people ask how I lost 90 pounds, I say it’s an inside job. The compulsion for food is actually the desire to experience an emotional state like safety, calmness or love. Chips and cookies don’t deliver those feelings, but rather temporarily stuff down fear, hurt, or anxiety. Soon there’s a return to the refrigerator or pantry in search of relief, forgetting that the purpose of food is to nourish the body Focusing on what and when to eat, or what shouldn’t have been eaten, creates an actual fear of food, as if the meal itself has the power to create fat. A tug of war develops between desiring food and the hoped-for effects, versus fear and resentment of what it might do. How do you change your relationship to food and yourself? Here are some suggestions: Every moment, you have a choice. Make it the healthiest available. Respect and love food - admire its beauty, savor and taste it, give thanks for it, and slowly chew it. Pause when you experience urges. Take a breath and ask, “What am I really hungry for?” Peace, protection, love? Explore other methods to provide that: meditate, breathe, phone a friend and talk, or watch a beautiful sunset. Take time to allow and examine your feelings. Bhakti Fest Feeds Souls

By Janice Hall Have a bit of island fever? If so, you might want to make travel plans for a joyous end-of-summer adventure to the mainland. Treat yourself to a desert sanctuary experience you won’t soon forget. From September 6-9, Bhakti Fest will feed your body and soul with four full days of yoga, kirtan chanting, music and workshops, provided by exceptional teachers and performers. An eco-friendly vendor village offering organic vegetarian foods, and a variety of artisan wares, adds to the independent community aspect of the festival. Devotional by virtue of its nature and history, the core of the Festival is chanting music (called kirtan). Some of the music is traditionally performed, yet many of today’s kirtan musicians have created contemporary adaptations based in jazz, blues, rock and even hip hop. This artistic integration of cultures has become extremely successful and draws a following as diverse and unique as the music itself. This September, Bhakti Fest will showcase nationally acclaimed musicians including Krishna Das, Jai Uttal, Donna De Lory, MC Yogi, C.C. White and Dave Stringer, to name a few. If you are ready to stretch the limits of your body and mind, you can participate in yoga and wisdom workshops led by extraordinary teachers such as Shiva Rea, Sara Ivanhoe, Radhanath Swami, David Saul Raye, and “Hoop Girl” Christabel Zamor. Whether you have years of expertise in yoga or are a neophyte, you will definitely up your game several levels. Bhakti Fest is produced by the father–daughter team of Sridhar and Mukti Silberfein. Their goal is to create a kind of non-denominational “spiritual Woodstock”– a conscious community in which people can immerse and “dive deeper into the self.” With its peaceful desert beauty and 18 known vortices on the land, the Joshua Tree Desert Retreat Center seems to be the perfect setting to foster inner reflection, spiritual reconnection and the unique experience of “being in the bhav.” For more information, visit bhaktifest.com.

“You Ate What?!”

By Catherine Blake “You ate what?!” We’ve all heard these words from those who may have different attitudes about food than we do. This is especially true here on Maui, where we can be sitting at a local event near Paniolo cowboys barbequing, Hawaiian Luau chefs, large families with heritage food (think Spam), vegetarians, vegans, health food experts, and raw foodies. When we think about it, health is a good thing to pursue and longevity is a laudable goal. After all, wisdom comes with age, right? Caring for ourselves is a learned skill and healthy kitchen skills, communication skills, setting boundaries, and teaching what we learn must all be developed in our lives to feel fully alive and well. Health begins with spirit. When we are in balance, our thoughts, words, and deeds shine forth like gems. As we falter from stress or fatigue, we know that we need to re-tune our deeper selves and to be deliberate about restoring our balance. How we feel about ourselves shows in our food choices. As we become aware of how our food choices affect us, we learn how to nourish ourselves wisely, choose foods that are life-giving. These are the living foods, the colorful foods. We resist consuming hollow foods that are made without love or care. We joyfully watch as our self-destructive habits fall to the side like outgrown clothing. Let us remember to give thanks for what we receive! These new choices affirm life. The results are evident in our glowing health, radiant smiles, and loving friendships. I choose complete health. I learn what is best for me and practice it often. All is well! How about you? Now, if I could only eat more raw foods... Author of Healthy Recipes for Friends, Aloha Sauces, and the Maui Light Diet, interfaith minister Catherine Blake has spent 35 years researching and teaching about natural wellness and spiritual well-being. The Hungry Soul

By Suzan Proia, C.Ht. Life-changing events are often spiritual in nature and a feast for the soul. In 2005, I was blessed with a transformational experience. It began with my desire to see whales. Late one afternoon, my roommate and I took his kayak to a West Maui beach. The ocean waves were not too rough. The sky was clear blue. Our prelude to the upcoming magic was a huge, green sea turtle. It surfaced close enough that it exhaled on us, dove under and came up on the other side of the kayak and stared again. I could have touched his head. We paddled for ten minutes when we heard a roaring sound – two adult humpbacks appeared only yards away. Their gigantic presence was breathtaking, their chatter deafening and the power of their breeches inspiring. My emotions split between awe and the knowledge they could sweep us under with a flick of their tails. For over an hour, these courting whales breeched and dove in a perfect circle around us. They did this consciously, knowing we were there, and we felt a supreme connection. As twilight fell, we caught a wave back to shore. The lone family on the beach came running up. “We can’t believe how close they were, we watched the whole thing. Did you see what they did when you left?” Their words came spilling out, while jumping up and down in excitement. Apparently one of the whales had shot up into the air, a full vertical breech, then straight down and the two turned and swam away… as if to say goodbye. I felt high for weeks after. My soul was sated. Suzan Proia, C.Ht. is an EFT practitioner, an intuitive counselor and a hypnotherapist. Her international private practice is based on Maui. The Raw Truth About Choice Health Bar

Restaurant Review by Lisa Evans There’s a hand-made sign on the wall that reads, “It’s not the food in your life. It’s the life in your food.” If you’re new to raw, vegan cuisine, you might wonder what those words mean. Choice Health Bar might be Lahaina’s healthiest and happiest café. With 95 percent of their products locally-sourced and organic, Choice shines when it comes to showing off Maui’s agricultural goodness. The regular menu offers a tantalizing selection of fresh-squeezed juices, smoothies, salads, and their signature dish – Acai bowls. Their Healthy Plate Lunch, Superfood Salad, and Epic Entree change daily. Everything is made to order and can be customized to your liking. “Tell us how you’re feeling and we’ll make you something epic.” It’s not just a line on their menu, it’s Kathryn’s and Emily’s

Make Conscious Porno Picks

By Dr. Sonia Borg In the last Maui Vision Magazine, my article on pornography addressed the common practice of many therapists to impose shame and guilt as a way to inspire change. Sexual guilt and shame are not only the lowest vibrations on the planet, but the leading cause of sexual dysfunctions. My position has always been that consenting adults should feel free to do whatever pleases them sexually as long as it is legal and is not hurting themselves or others. There is something about using pornography that most people don’t know: when using pornography, you are in the space of creation. My concern is that people are unknowingly creating what they don’t want for themselves. How does that work? In our normal waking lives, we have what is called a critical factor that serves as a barrier between the conscious and the subconscious mind. Research tells us that there are five ways to influence the subconscious mind, but you only need one. Pornography easily influences the mind in three of them: strong emotions (sex), people of influence (porn stars, celebrities), and engaging the imagination (pornographic images). Only one is necessary to influence the subconscious mind. When considering media usage, we all need to ask ourselves simply, “Is this the vibration, frequency and point of attraction I would like to create in my life?” If your answer is “no,” use the same principles to pick pornography that emulates what you do want. In my practice, I guide individuals and couples to use their own inner creative minds to create what they do want and desire in their sex lives. This co-creation is fun and healthy and inspires change, 100 percent guilt free. Soon, they begin to see what they want and desire to start to materialize in their lives. Dr. Sonia Borg, Ph.D, MPH, MA, CHt, uses non-touch therapeutic methods at her Wailuku office and in phone sessions. For more information, call toll-free 1.855.377.6642.

Paulo’s Perspective By Paul O’Brien

Dear Paulo, My dilemma is whether I should exert more effort in this business I’m currently in and try to work on my passions simultaneously, or should I try to wind this one down and search for some non-profit business that is more planet friendly? How do I get clear about a specific direction for myself? I am just so scattered and have so many interests - it’s really difficult for me to narrow it down. Thank you so much for all you do. You are really a great inspiration! - Glenda, Las Vegas, NV Some people are more focused than others by temperament. For example, I am a true Gemini in my strong attraction to variety (it’s not ADHD, I swear :-). When it comes to work, this can be a problem. My first software company failed because I developed three unrelated (but fascinating) apps. It eventually went belly up, because the three products had no common marketing channels, customers or media - no marketing synergy. Their design and development had satisfied my creative side, but lack of strategic focus made the marketing costs too high for my first business to survive.

As John Demartini teaches, the answer to your dilemma begins with becoming aware of your “hierarchy of values,” getting clear on your higher priorities (there is an easy logical way to do this, which I will describe in my next book Great Decisions, Perfect Timing). Also, maintain some creative outlets in addition to your “day-job.” All those years that I toiled in software sales (a job I did not love), I took classes, wrote letters, gave talks, volunteered as a meditation teacher and have been host of a radio show for 28 years now (see Divination.com/podcasts). I didn’t have as much time as I would have liked for these more interesting activities when I was struggling to make ends meet, but I never let go of them. And now that I sold my business, I do the scattered mix of what I love full-time!

Be receptive to good advice. My second business succeeded partly because I formed a two-person advisory board and didn’t make any strategic decisions for ten years without convincing at least one of them. These successful entrepreneurs were not yes-men and focus was their middle name. If they hadn’t talked me out of several creative ideas I passionately argued for, my second business might have failed too. By the way, it doesn’t matter so much what your day-job is as long as it’s not harmful. It’s OK for you to stick with, or go with, the one that pays the best, even if it is not scintillating. Money isn’t everything, but as one who has worked hard for months without pay, I know how critical financial sustainability is and how challenging it can be during times of high unemployment. Switching jobs is expensive; switching careers is very expensive. But if you are under 40—or have a lot of savings—and feel strongly attracted to a specific different career that could support you, it might be a good time to switch. Being able to make a living doing something you love is the ideal, but that’s rare before retirement. By the way, this is a fine question to divinate on! You might ask the I Ching or Tarot, “What is the best approach to take vis-a-vis my career or work-choices?” Paul O’Brien is an author, mentor and founder of Divination.com with a mission to facilitate great decisions and timing, better relationships and less stress.

Honoring Sacred Spaces

By Carolyn Cobelo The power of the sacred sites of Hawai’i is a magnificent force that is still present. Sacred places like Mount Haleakala and the I’ao Valley were born to assist in the transformation of the Earth. With good intentions and open hearts, we can access these energies for our own benefit and for the benefit of the Earth and all its people. When you enter a sacred place in Hawai’i, it is good to let the spirits know that you come with love and respect. Open your heart to receive their blessing. Many places have been abused in the past by those who have come with dark intentions and evil purposes. For this reason, guardian spirits may block access to the power of the place until they know that we truly come with good intentions. It is only then that they may open the gates to their wisdom and power. The Hawaiian Islands, which function like a vortex, are one of the world’s major pulse points. An energy of creation lying below the surface brought forth volcanoes whose eruptions created the islands. In spiritual channeling, it has been revealed that in the coming years, Mount Haleakala and all the world’s volcanoes will ignite and expand the interconnections between all beings, including humans, plants, minerals, celestial beings and animals. Additionally, places like the I’ao Valley will help us to shift our values from materiality to spirituality. Male and female energies will rebalance and inspire men and women to find a new way of being together in harmony and truth. As these energies within us shift and readjust, our outer approach to life will shift in a positive and harmonious new direction. Carolyn Cobelo has led sacred journeys for over 30 years, and is a healer, channel, filmmaker, and author of seven metaphysical books. She is leading the Akasha Soul Celebration: Autumn Equinox event, September 20-23, 2012, on Maui. Visit AkashaSacredJourneys.com

A Recipe For The Soul

By Barbara Ensign Cht. Many are searching for the secret ingredient for soul food to receive soul wisdom, knowledge and practices to fulfill their spiritual journeys. They want to know who they are, why they are here, what is their purpose. They want abundance, good health and extended life. They want to be transformed inside and out. How does one achieve such things in today’s world? Just as there is a wide selection of foods from which we can choose to nourish our physical bodies, there are an equal number of ways to nourish our souls. The Divine is all around us. Each person has his or her own path. Choose the one that speaks to your soul, that makes you feel good. Whatever you believe in, believe it with all your heart. No matter how you choose to nourish your soul each day, whether it be meditating, reading a good book, a day out in nature, petting your cat (which is one of my favorites), getting a massage or eating a piece of chocolate (another favorite), be like a child, clear, loving, spontaneous, infinitely flexible and ready each moment to wonder and accept miracles. As a hypnotherapist, many people come to me to help them discover their life’s purpose or their soul’s journey. While these sessions are extremely insightful and powerful, sometimes equally as powerful are the sessions where someone relaxes so much and, yes, even falls asleep for a moment. What a treat. How refreshing and rejuvenating for the soul to just let go and relax and do nothing! Soul food is that which inspires us, teaches us, reminds us of the Truth, and causes us to remember who we really are. It reconnects us consciously to the awareness of our own innate divinity. Barbara Ensign is a certified hypnotherapist specializing in “Past Lives, Life Between Lives” spiritual regression and relaxation. Her office is in Makawao. A Time For Rebalance

By Judy Levy The Male-Female “Old Paradigm” way of relating needs to change! The controversy that I stirred up with my February article in Maui Vision Magazine calling for more “conscious men” to show up on Maui is still creating some fun and inspiring ripples. Numerous conscious men complimented me on my willingness to express the collective frustration that many single Maui Goddesses feel. Some men took offense and let me know that too! Ironically, one sweet result was that I had the honor of hosting a spontaneous event sponsored by Maui’s chapter of the Mankind Project (thank you Apollo Grace)! The Lotus Heart was graced by visiting author and seminar founder, Gary Stamper whose book, Awakening the New Masculine: Integrating the Spiritual Warrior is now available at Lotus Heart. The fact that 25 people (ironically, it was a “gender balanced” event!) showed up on a rainy night with only 48 hours notice indicates that there is a desire for a forum to explore this topic. Now in 2012, the foundational issue of the male-female dynamic is up for review. There seems to be a huge desire to “rebalance” our roles and recreate more conscious communication. As more of us seek Divine Partnership, this exploration will welcome a new paradigm for the relationship between our genders. At the end of March 2013, Gary (who holds a PhD in shamanic psycho-spiritual studies) and his lovely wife Anya will return to Maui to offer their unique seminar that fosters conscious communication. Included will be a full roster of relationship masters sharing wisdom and innovative ideas that celebrate a new understanding and alignment between us all. Let’s all come together in new ways! Judy Levy, mystical wise woman, Reiki Master, organic farmer and activist, is co-creator of Lotus Heart Books and Gifts at Temple of Peace, Haiku. She invites you to come feel “the Vortex of Peace” and browse the exquisite collection of unique gifts and sacred treasures. Call 808.575.5220 or visit LotusHeartMaui.com for more info.

Get Feeling Really Great!

By Maurgana Stiastny Originating in China over 5,000 years ago, acupuncture is one of the oldest forms of medicine. It is based on the fact that all living beings have a vital energy or “qi” that runs through an invisible meridian system in their bodies. A clinical medicine used for thousands of years, acupuncture involves the application of sterile, disposable needles at specific points on the body. Health can be restored and maintained by stimulating certain points. The body’s meridian or energy lines correspond to different organs and when the system goes out of balance or becomes sluggish, it can cause the person to become unhealthy and experience symptoms. And because imbalance occurs before symptoms appear, acupuncture can be utilized as a preventative measure. Acupuncturists ask their patients a variety of questions, looking at them as a “whole.” Then they will “read” their pulse and tongue (the tongue reflects the organs). This is a very efficient and effective way of diagnosing the patient since there are three pulses at each wrist, and each can be read in very subtle ways, revealing much more than heart rhythm. Some treatments may involve techniques other than acupuncture such as moxabustion (applying heat to the body), cupping (which employs suction to the skin for the purpose of moving blood and qi), herbal medicine in the form of teas, tinctures, granules or pills, and electrostimulation and microcurrent. Acupuncture also plays a role in relieving pain by releasing painkilling endorphins. It can provide support for internal disease and detoxification and it also stimulates and influences the release of neurotransmitters that affect brain chemistry and support a healthy emotional state. Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine are wonderfully effective, noninvasive ways to maintain your health and help you feel really great! Maurgana Stiastny, LAc, MAcOM, LMT, has been an acupuncturist and natural healthcare practitioner for 23 years. Find her at the Quan Yin Healing Center located on the North Shore of Maui or call her at 808.579.8810.

A Glimpse Of La’au Lapa’au

By Maluhia Zorzi When I returned to the healing path of lomi, I had no idea where the journey would take me. It continues as I continue to learn. Recently, I attended a class titled “Hawaiian Spa Therapies” (Exploring Hawaiian Medicinal Concepts). In the class I found out that everyday fruits, vegetables, and even flowers could be used as La’au Lapa’au (Hawaiian medicines). Today, some of our la’au lapa’au practitioners receive insight through dreams from the kupuna (ancestors) just as they did in ancient times. As I have learned through my Hawaiian upbringing, you never question something that the kupuna tells you to do, whether from a dream or face-to-face. These practitioners prepare the plants as they have been shown and, once completely prepared, they are ready for use. Certain plants are considered the kinolau, or the body form of different deities. A few of the plants we used are the Kukui, which is safe for all skin types. The ‘awa (kava) is used to help ease muscle pain and relaxes the musculoskeletal system. We brewed the Mamaki (nettle) daily to make our teas for the student clinic. The Mamaki is a general tonic used to cleanse the liver and bladder, and is credited with helping to maintain balance for people who are diabetic. We learned to honor the spirit with intent through prayer and to be pono (in integrity) when gathering. At the workshop’s end, I was brought back to an ‘olelo no’eau (saying), “He ali’i ka ‘aina, he kauwa ke kanaka,” which translates to, “The earth is our chief and we are its servants.” To me, this means that we must care for the land and the plants and they will care for us and continue to provide our sustenance. Ho’omana Spa Retreat is located in Makawao and offers an array of indigenous therapies including Hawaiian Lomi therapeutic massage and spa treatments. Kitcheree (India’s Healing Miracle Food)

By Jackie and Dave Reed Kitcheree or Kitchadee is a traditional Indian food made from yellow-split mung beans and basmati rice. It’s easy to digest, cleansing to the digestive system, a complete protein, and delicious. This dish encompasses all of the six tastes, which in Ayurveda is part of eating a balanced diet, as each taste feeds our body, mind, and spirit and satisfies each of the dietary building blocks. The combination of the rice and beans is complete protein, so it can be a great protein source, especially for vegetarians. Kitcheree is easy to digest and nourishing, and is eaten exclusively during Pancha Karma, which is the Ayurvedic cleansing/detoxification program. Kitcheree is also used as a mono cleanse to reset the digestive system. Kitcheree can be customized for each body type and time of year. Here is a basic Kitcheree recipe that you can enjoy: 3 tablespoons ghee (clarified butter) 1 teaspoon mustard seeds 1 teaspoon cumin 1 teaspoon turmeric 1 cup brown or white basmati rice (rinsed) 1 cup split yellow mung beans (soaked for few hours and rinsed) 6 cups water 1 teaspoon salt 2 cups seasonal veggies (optional) 1/4 cup chopped fresh cilantro (optional) Other spices to consider: Hingwastika, cardamom, coriander, ginger, fennel, marjoram, sage, etc. Instructions: Melt ghee in a large saucepan on medium heat. Add spices first then add the rice and beans. Stir for about 1-2 minutes or until the rice just starts to smell toasted. Add all the water at once. Add the salt and veggies at this point, if you are using them, and bring to a boil. Reduce heat, cover and simmer for about 25 minutes.

Jackie and Dave Reed own and operate Maui Herbs, an Ayurveda Healing Center, in Kihei. They are both clinical Ayurveda specialists. Jackie specializes in pulse analysis. Dave is also a chiropractor and Vedic astrologer. For more information call 808.879.9920 or check out their website at MauiHerbs.net.

Microcirculation Matters

By Tara Grace Physical therapy for blood vessels is a fresh concept for growing numbers of health enthusiasts. Many of us are aware of the benefits of exercise, deep sleep, a wholesome diet, supplements, meditation and the spiritual path of the heart. Equally important to our vitality and well-being is microcirculation - the flow of blood through the smallest vessels of the body. In contrast to the larger vessels which transport blood to and from the organs (macrocirculation), these small vessels are responsible for distributing blood within tissue and providing oxygen and nutrients to tissue and organs. Our circulatory system is composed of 11 percent arteries, 14 percent veins and 74 percent capillaries (micro-vessels). Vital to the functioning of that system, microcirculation vessels supply and cleanse all 80-100 trillion cells of the body. Proper functioning is important for health and well-being because restricted or defective microcirculation results in faster aging of cells and causes health complaints and illnesses. So what can we do to improve microcirculation in our bodies? Some technologies, like Bemer Technology, are available to improve microcirculation and the result is improved energy production and energy distribution. This can strengthen the immune system, reduce the effects of stress on the body, support the body’s natural healing processes, cleanse organs and tissues, stabilize the autonomic nervous system, increase production of endorphins, improve development of the body’s own antioxidants, and increase overall performance and capacity. Improved microcirculation can also have a positive effect on cholesterol levels. Blood is the body’s universal means of transport and oxygen and nutrients are transported through it. Only when all of our body’s cells, tissues and organs are adequately nourished, and all of the metabolic by-products removed, can we reach our highest potential for health and productivity. In other words, microcirculation matters. Tara Grace is a certified Bemer representative. Call her at 808.870.1006, e-mail bemermat@gmail.com or visit bemeramerica.com/ circulate.

Exploring Ayurveda - The Science Of Life By Dr. Suhas Kshirsagar Ayurveda is the knowledge of life and it teaches us how to live healthy lives. But, before we can learn how to accomplish that, we need to understand the difference between being ‘disease free’ and being ‘healthy.’ Feeling ‘unhealthy’ is not necessarily the same as being diseased. After a fitful sleep, have you ever awakened feeling sick? There are bags under your eyes, no sparkle on those days, vague aches and pains dog you, and for no rhyme or reason, you are unhappy. Such symptoms cannot be classified easily into any known disease syndrome. But you are certainly not well, and are definitely not in a state of positive health. So, what does modern medicine have to offer when we have such complaints? The current trend is to prescribe popular anti-stress drugs. Did you know that Ayurveda, our very own ‘made-to-order’ indigenous system of health from India, gives us several tricks to follow that will prevent us from feeling unwell? To be healthy, both the body and the mind need to be kept fit. The root philosophy of Ayurveda is based on the five element theory. Diet and digestion are the pivots on which most of its theories are based – both in normalcy as well as in disease. From these theories evolve the concept of controlling forces that act on the tissues, giving rise to various metabolic products. The character of all these is governed by what we eat, how we live and in which environment, and what our mental state is. Modifying any of these forces can make us unwell, not necessarily diseased. If we remain unwell for too long, then our tissues can lose their strength and become susceptible to foreign attack-like infections, making us disease-stricken. An important concept of Ayurveda is that each individual is geneti-

cally different – giving him or her a specific constitution and also an individual way of interacting with the environment. Thus, each person knows best what suits his or her body and what does not. Ayurveda tells us of the framework in which we can modify our lifestyles to optimize our bodily functions. If, for some reason, some illness does occur, then Ayurveda describes remedies based on herbs, minerals and other therapeutic procedures including pancha karma, ancient cleaning measures. Ayurveda emphasizes the role of mental health in maintaining physical health. Today, we agree that there is a definite link between the mind and body. Within this framework, we can re-interpret the ancient stanzas of Ayurveda and contribute new knowledge to the science of medicine. But, there is a word of caution – blind faith in Ayurveda is not the answer. People are turning towards Ayurveda not only for therapy, but also to provide the lead for research today. It is now up to the researchers to answer the questions: Can we develop a formula to live a healthy life using the philosophy of Ayurveda? Can we personalize our lifestyles so as to avoid disease altogether? Can we master the art of living? The answer is “yes.” How? Extensive scientific research is currently being conducted to quantify and verify the proven results of Ayurvedic treatments. Dr. Suhas Kshirsagar is a world-renowned Ayurvedic physician and educator. He is the director of Ayurvedic Healing, an integrative wellness clinic in Santa Cruz, California. Dr. Suhas will teach Ayurvedic Body Therapies on Maui Sept. 28-30. He will also offer Vedic Medical Readings. WAKING UP TO THE REAL VALUE OF LAND Change only happens when the existing systems aren’t working. It takes a shock to wake up. Every day brings more shocks as we realize that our financial systems are giant Ponzi schemes, our governments are corrupt and dysfunctional; we have a high-tech health care in a feudal delivery system and even our food is corporate controlled and extremely contaminated. We have to do something, but where do we start? Start with food! Food brings us all together! Grow your own and sleep better knowing that it’s chemical free! Share the abundance with your friends. Asked what he thought of Western Civilization, Gandhi said that he thought “It would be a good idea.” We can say the same for sustainability, a word that means one thing to farmers and another to politicians. (Hint: malls only sustain developers and the consumer culture.) But out on our Haiku farm ‘sustain’ means preparing the soil with compost, using all cuttings for compost, using the fish waste on the garden – basically imitating nature as best we can.

We have benefited from local and visiting teachers, even recently hosting a ten-day permaculture course. Next year we will give a series of seminars to share our methods and system. Because it is up to us to upgrade our communities so they are more resilient – to make them more self-sufficient, sharing, robust and imaginative as we move further into uncertain times. We are encouraged by the spread of farmers markets, the Maui Farmers Union, the Maui Food Web, SLIM seminars, more Ag courses at the college and even farm tours for the visitors. Together we are building a stronger, local food systems that we will need as world food supplies become more scarce and expensive. I’m not sure how we will survive the GMO menace in our midst, but I know we are taking critical steps to feed ourselves. Final proof is that more of our real estate clients are asking for properties with fruit trees and gardens and proximity to local markets. Is organic food important to you? If you want to find property with favorable conditions for growing more of your own food, call us.

A Poem To Seduce Science By Ann Nehaya Walsh I am a poet who has often rolled her eyes at science’s particularities. Especially, as I have felt, it lacked Soul. Being in a Lomilomi apprenticeship, which required many months of study in anatomy and physiology for a state licensing certification, I succumbed to science’s belief in itself and learned to cross “t’s” and dot “i’s” as specifically as science wanted. The jewel in all of this came in the form of a vibrant, youthful, and mature woman, Sheleagh Lampshire, who occasionally played the guitar as she sang a song, which introduced us students to a new biological system. As the night classes unfolded, I was continually impressed with Sheleagh’s clear, focused knowledge, coupled with effervescent enthusiasm over the marvels of the human body. She inspired me to seduce science into poem. As a note: In science’s story, we breathe because of the mitochondria housed in our cells. It is our mothers who pass mitochondria on to us. Ode to Mitochondria for Sheleagh Lampshire Is there ever a more intimate than you, O, Mighty Chondria? You soothe and nourish the cytoplasmic essence of my Being. Ever faithful, deeply loyal you are abiding and true. May the mitochondria of all our beings pulse in harmonic Oneness now. Ann Nehaya Walsh is a healing artist, who works through storytelling, communicating with animals, and energetic “medicinal” treatments. She lives in Pukalani while continuing her Lomilomi training. Witnessing An Initiation

By Rev. Debbie Dehm I recently had the great opportunity to attend the Aloha Wisdom Gathering in Kona with three of the thirteen indigenous grandmothers. We spent five days praying and having ceremony to help the planet. During the Venus transit ceremonies, we all had the honor of witnessing a special event. Grandmother Flore De Mayo, from the Mayan Indians, brought her granddaughter Azul with her. She had just turned 13 and was ready for her initiation as a woman and as a Mayan priestess. The 100 people in attendance understood that this was a rare privilege and were very moved to be a part of this young girl’s promise to follow her ancestral traditions. We were in tears as we watched Flore De Mayo give Azul the ritual bathing, her priestess name and medicine bag. She wore a traditional dress that her mother had sewn for her. When her grandmother had finished, all of the other grandmothers and aunties gave Azul their blessings. After a break, it was time for Azul to perform her first official act as a Mayan Priestess and give us all a blessing. Mayans bless with incense, so she walked around our circle giving us all her blessing. Everyone was so emotional because we all understood that this young woman represented the hope for all our futures and that she would be carrying on her grandmother’s tradition and knowledge. We also learned that Grandmother Flore de Mayo had started an heirloom seed bank that will protect our food from being wiped out by GMO crops. People from all over the world trying to save their traditional plants from contamination send her seeds. If you have seeds you would like to save, contact me for her address. She also recommends that people start their own seed banks wherever they are. Reverend Debbie Dehm is a nationally-certified Hawaii-licensed massage therapist and reiki master. Letting Thoughts Go

By Eliza Bassett Although they use different words, many aphorisms made by various spiritual and psychological teachers repeat the same advice: Let go of thoughts that cause you difficulties (of any kind). The emotional attachment to a thought creates internal bodily stresses. By letting go of the emotion and then the thought behind it, we receive what we need, as well as become who we are supposed to be. And this last part is what these changing times are about: becoming who we are fully supposed to be in this life. For me, these ideas of ascension are not us leaving the planet as outlined in the New Testaments’ Revelation. It is the reverse. We are presently cleansing our bodies of whatever burdens we’ve taken on so far in our life’s experiences to allow more of our soul to occupy our bodies. Some examples of what is being cleansed include food choices, changing exercise routines, allowing stored energies to leave wherever they have been packed in, any relationship that has completed the spiritual commitment. These are all moving into a new form. Have compassion for those who are now waking up to looking at this world in a different way. Perhaps they are realizing that they no longer need to live in any of the programming from childhood. All can be replaced with the joy of freedom to allow our souls to direct us, to feed and care for us in ways never imagined by these sweet people. Malama pono - Take care – Maluhia - Peace. Knowing Your Bodies

By Heather Ardoin Body and Soul are not two substances, but one. They are man becoming aware of himself in two different ways. - C.F. Von Weizsacker According to yogic tradition, there are 5 Koshas, or “ layers” of the body. These layers can be thought of as a map for navigating your journey from the outside in, so to speak. Like layers of an onion, each metaphorical “body” is contained within the next: Annamaya Kosha - the physical body, Pranamaya Kosha - the breath or lifeforce body, Manomaya Kosha - the mental body, Vijanamaya Kosha- the wisdom body, and Anandamaya Kosha - the bliss body. This is not a literal anatomical model, but rather a metaphor to describe what it feels like to do yoga from the inside - the process of aligning your “Body, Mind, and Spirit.” In my practice of holistic physical therapy and yoga therapy, I work primarily on the first and second layers – the Ananmaya Kosha and the Prananmaya Kosha. The practice of asana is the main yogic tool for balancing the physical body. The purpose of asana is to create a free flow of energy in order to direct our attention. By becoming aware of our physical “self” and integrating it with the breath, the more subtle layers of the “self” become more accessible. As we access all of these layers, we become more in touch, and better able to heal our bodies and souls. We can then truly find the balance within. Heather Ardoin is a licensed physical therapist, a certified Pilates instructor, and a registered yoga teacher. She is the owner of Therapeutic Fusion, a holistic practice in South Maui offering physical therapy, group therapeutic yoga classes, and private Pilates and yoga sessions. Heart And Soul Of How

By Lisa Evans There is a place that you are to fill and no one else can fill; something you are to do, which no one else can do. - Florence Scovel Shinn Florence got it somewhat right – you do fill a place in this world that no one else can fill. And, there is no one else like you. However, whatever it is you do for a living, for others, or for your own general amusement, most assuredly, there is someone else who can do what you do. What Florence forgot to say is how you do what you do is what sets you apart from any other. Consider your last dining out experience. Hopefully, your stomach and your soul were fed. However, if the food was tasty, but the service was terrible, more than likely your overall culinary adventure was adversely affected. How you’re fed will always have a more powerful and lasting impact than what you’re fed. This is not only true with food, but with advertising and any other media that you consume. No matter what the business is, there is a significant difference between getting service and being served. No matter what your job or avocation is, there is a substantial divide between just doing enough and giving it your all. What matters is how you put your heart and soul into what you do. How do you fill that place in the world that no one else can fill? When you make how you live your life matter more than what you do in life, not only will your soul be fed, but you’ll feed the souls of others. Lisa Evans is a writer and movement arts facilitator. A Gift Of Stillness

By Sheridan Hailley Years ago, I was severely ill with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. While the illness challenged me to my core, it also taught me because during the course of healing the illness, I learned to intimately attune to the messages held in my body. I developed the ability to get quiet and found soul-nourishing gifts in the inner stillness. I was bedridden on and off for several years and physically incapable of many of the activities of daily living – things that I had previously taken for granted. I was particularly attached to my work role, which I was now forced to relinquish. Sometimes I struggled tenaciously against my apparent losses and sometimes, in moments of deathly exhaustion, I truly, completely, “gave up.” The all-consuming illness gave me the gift of pause from a busy life and a busy mind. And it led me to that place where I was more, much more, than the earthly roles I’d had to give up. As I rested deeply with my inner life, I explored a universe rich with sensations, images and feelings. Through this process, the worst moments of pain and distress gave way and opened to the most delicious experiences of inner calm. I have found, in times of challenge, an invaluable resource in returning to that stillness. It is a space that softly, quietly nourishes me and holds that part of me that struggles with change and letting go. Finely attuning to the sensations that run through my body, moment to moment, helps me quiet my mind and stay present with my inner resources. While messages of the mind may mislead me, or have me identify with my earthly roles, experiencing my body’s wisdom and teachings, breath by breath, is a magical, miraculous vehicle for accessing the soul-nourishing gifts found in the inner stillness! Be Happy, Stop Seeking

By Roxanne Darling Do you ever find it ironic that we spiritual seekers – those of us willing to try the latest new modalities - are the same people who struggle with happiness and manifestation? It’s like we get hooked on finding flaws and off we go trying to “fix everything” to achieve some state of nirvana. I’ve learned that focusing on the things you believe need to be changed actually drains the self-esteem bank account and blocks your ability to attract the very things you want. As human beings having a spiritual experience, we don’t need fixing! We are simply momentary expressions of energy - vibrating up, or down, or steadily. Of course we have neuroses, but so what? We can empower them by keeping them front and center or we can laugh them off as natural extensions of our particular history. Laughing off neuroses expands positive energy. It lights you up! That makes it easier for your desired results to find you - literally. If you want to hunt and dig, you can always find “faults.” But those things that start as spiritual tools can easily become a chains. If you find less and less relief from your seeking, you may be ready for a do-it-yourself (DIY) wake-up call. DIY has arrived in the pursuit of consciousness. You no longer have to spend your life trying to earn or learn your way back to forgiveness. You can have direct access to an enlivened state of consciousness without intermediaries or mantras. When you are feeling bad, it’s to get your attention! Try not to go autopilot and turn to a remedy outside yourself. Instead, go within and be soothed by the large self-version of you. Feel the discomfort - it passes. Nothing to fix, only stuff to flow. Roxanne Darling is a divine openings giver on Maui. Visit her at DivineOpeningsWithRox.com.

A Gift Of Understanding

By Sharleé Maher Being in conflict with others does not nurture the part of me that desires comfort and ease. When I find myself in conflict, the gift of understanding is most helpful. Most conflict I experience stems from a lack of understanding. Understanding does not equate to agreement. Rather, it means I extend myself to hear alternative perspective, often finding that it isn’t too far from my own. One year, I was teaching about conflict resolution in a high school and many students asked to discuss discrimination while giving “stink eye” to one particular boy. I asked if this topic met his approval and he proudly said, “Sure, I hate black gangsters and white trash!” In light of these openly prejudicial statements, I decided to start with author Stephen Covey’s suggestion, “Seek first to understand.” I asked Brian what he didn’t like about black gangsters. “They shoot up neighborhoods and sell drugs to kids,” he replied. “It sounds like you are protective of your community.” I said. “Yes, exactly!” he replied. When I asked the class if they wanted a safe community, they all replied, “Yes!” Next, I asked Brian for his definition of white trash. He said, “Men who beat their wives.” The group unanimously agreed they didn’t like this either. Spontaneous applause broke out when I noted that the entire group seemed to share similar values and we moved on to creatively discuss ways to communicate values more effectively. More than ever, our world needs understanding. Amazingly, I can find vast common ground through the gift of understanding, even with people I disagree with greatly. Once I allow understanding to flow, I find myself quickly returned to my desired life of comfort and ease. A Roadmap To Inner Peace

Review by Vanessa Wolf Years ago, at a critical juncture in my life, a friend handed me a copy of Debbie Ford’s The Right Questions. The book, a slender tome filled with simple but insightful self-inquiries, was as wise as it was helpful. I suspect Jasmyne Boswell’s similarly concise book, “What If the Problem’s Not the Problem?” will act as a comparable roadmap to its readers, particularly those seeking inner peace in their daily lives. Ms. Boswell spent several years studying Radiant Mind Training in Boulder, Colorado. In her book, she shares the four main tenets that shifted her then and guide her still. The first of her four practices – “What if your Problem’s not the Problem? Putting an end to resistance” – focuses on the idea of reframing “problems” as life simply not unfolding as we wish. In trusting that everything is as it should be, problems are no longer roadblocks to be plowed through, but redirections along life’s path. The second – “Doing what’s Obvious” - honoring the natural flow of life – involves practicing awareness - noticing our thoughts and learning to regain control of our own thinking. The third – “Being Complete in the Moment: finding peace in the middle of any storm” – offers a further step toward staying in the now. To illustrate, Ms. Boswell tells the story of her mind’s obsession with a falling out with a close friend and how she was able to regain mental control and inner peace. With the fourth and final practice, “Pure Awareness: residing in our natural state of being,” Ms. Boswell introduces the idea of natural meditation or simply noticing what is, or isn’t, and going with that flow. Each chapter ends with self-inquiries and exercises that complement the practices and help solidify the teachings. I found the book an enjoyable and enlightening read, and I’m certain I’ll employ a few of Ms. Boswell’s suggestions in my own life. Visit amazon.com for ordering information.

Soothing That Itch

By Smita Khatri Do you or your pet have an itch that won’t go away? Would you love something to soothe it? The solution may be in these ingredients—aloe vera gel, cedar wood oil, and peppermint oil. Maui’s Alex Garcia, who has been in the pest control business for over 23 years, discovered a natural formula to relieve the irritation from bug bites at a time when he needed it the most. While he was on vacation with his wife a few years ago, he found himself covered in mite bites. Alex needed to do something to relieve the discomfort so they could enjoy their vacation. So he went to the local health food store and combined aloe vera gel, pure cedar wood oil, and peppermint oil. He applied it to his mite bites and the itch went away immediately. Alex was able to sleep that night and heal over the next few days. After coming back from vacation, Alex applied this mixture to his dog, who had been diagnosed with a mite problem. The dog calmed down immediately, didn’t try to lick it off, and sat still when Alex reapplied the mixture over the next few days. Alex has been amazed at how well this formula has worked on humans, cats, and dogs. It has helped bring relief to many people with skin problems related to itchiness, sunburn, scabies, skin mites, bed bug bites and other bug bites and stings. In addition, it has relieved discomfort for pets that have skin mites, flea bites, insect bites, mange, scabies, hot spots, and allergies. As an added bonus, this formula can also be used as a bug repellant. So, avoid the temptation to scratch the next time you have an itch. And consider whether nature may have a cure! Itchy Bite Soothing Aloe Gel is an all-natural formula for relieving itchiness in humans and pet. It contains aloe vera gel, cedar wood oil, and peppermint oil. Food Needs Reiki, Too!

By Shalandra Abbey Reiki Natural Healing gives the human body the energy it needs to heal itself. Reiki practitioners find that adding Reiki energy to your daily intake of food and beverages helps remove energetic blocks caused by pollutants or harmful emotions. This not only makes the food taste better, it also adapts it to the personal energy of your body. Students seem to enjoy my story of being out with a gentleman for dinner one evening, when I automatically placed my hand over my glass of water as we were talking. Soon he asked why I had my hand over my drink. I explained that I was giving it Reiki. After I told him why, he asked if I would Reiki his scotch and soda, which I did while we continued our conversation. Later he took a sip of his drink and looked at me in disappointment and said, “Put it back!” He could no longer taste the alcohol! Even though we seemed to enjoy each other’s company, for some reason, he didn’t invite me out again after that. In another instance, the evening before seven year old Kyle’s First Degree Reiki class we went out to dinner. He loves hamburgers and said before taking a bite that he was really hungry. After a couple more bites he said it didn’t taste good, so I decided to Reiki it for him. Soon I commented to his mother Amy that I thought it was a bad piece of meat because my hand was getting extremely hot. Yes, I guess you could say I’m a “Reiki Junkie.” After practicing Reiki Natural Healing full-time for over twenty years, I just naturally use it on everything to stay healthy and happy. Shalandra Abbey is the author of Living a Life of Reiki and a member the Reiki Alliance, an international, professional organization of Reiki Masters. Nourishing Soul’s Growth

By Mary Lane We are used to thinking that food for the body and food for the soul are different forms of nourishment. Rarely do we consider that food has a far reaching effect on our whole being. Take the simplest perspective of sharing food. Coming together in community with family and friends has been an important, sacred ritual in every culture across the globe for eons. This ritual held the community together and reminded everyone what our Mother Earth had provided for them. It is only recently that we have lost that sacred ritual. And along with it, we lost our connection to our Mother Earth. Our soul’s journey throughout our lifetime has been made possible by food. Without food we would not have a physical experience. It is the physical journey that supports our souls to grow and evolve. Our connection with the environment in which we live, our Mother Earth, is vital to our soul’s growth. Obviously she considers her role as a nourisher of the utmost importance. She offers nourishment wherever we live in every form imaginable supporting our soul’s growth through our deep connection with her as she feeds our bodies from her own. She imbues our very cells with her love, consciousness and wisdom. She supports us to ground ourselves in her wisdom through the food she offers and provides a seasonal map for transformation, all made possible through food. When we nourish ourselves aligned with her wisdom, we are very much indeed nourishing our souls. The creative process that brings us the sensuality of flavors, textures, smells, colors, and the medicine of food is a primal act that embodies our interconnectedness with our sacred world. It is nourishment needed for the soul. Mary Lane, author of Divine Nourishment, a Woman’s Sacred Journey with Food, offers private consultations, hikes, retreats, classes supporting the transformation of self rejection to self love and honor through the doorway of nourishment. Living An Inspired Life

By Paul Solomon A while ago, I attended an evening of poetry and song by two local artists. Being a songwriter and a lifelong lover of poetry, I always enjoyed listening to other people’s creations. I had only recently begun to write a few songs after many years off. However, I was so inspired by the performances that I went home and immediately began writing again. The origin of the word “inspiration” is “to breathe.” The original meaning connotes a divine being imparting truth or ideas to someone. Spiritually, breath is equated with spirit and life energy (chi, prana, kundalini). In meditation, we focus on the breath to quiet the mind and open our hearts so that we may hear the voice of our inner spirit. As we learn to listen to this divine inner voice, we become more aware of our spiritual truths and are inspired to create a life in tune with our soul. We can, however, become disconnected from our breath, life force and spirit because of stress, trauma, negative thoughts and emotional wounds. Things that once inspired us no longer evoke excitement or passion. Life becomes an uninspired series of chores. By going deep within to heal, we reconnect to our true selves and reclaim our inspiration. As we do so, we open our hearts more fully, our creativity flows, we manifest with greater ease, and we act with more joy and passion. We become free to express the truth of our being in love and gratitude and to serve others and the planet with our unique gifts and talents. We begin to live an inspired life. Then, as our essence shines forth, we inspire others to do the same.

Gina is caring and passionate about her work. She continues to

sharpen her skills by studying around the world. For me personally, I am happy that I have found someone who intuitively knows what my body needs. Gina uses Myo-Neuro Fibril massage, myo-therapy pressure points and various stretches & techniques that relax my body immediately. I can feel relief instantly. Clearly she is very knowledgeable about the body and knows exactly what to do. The shift in energy from when I arrive (stressed) to when I leave (relaxed) is very apparent. I am thankful that I have found someone who can go deep and not make me sore. I highly recommend her.
