When Change Is The Only Constant By Mark Sheehan [T]here are known knowns; there are things we know we know. We also know there are known unknowns; that is to say we know there are some things we do not know. But there are also unknown unknowns – the ones we don’t know we don’t know. -Former Secretary of Defense, Donald Rumsfeld

What can you say about the unknown? After all, it is a mystery. Secretary Rumsfeld employed proper syntax in obfuscating the reasons why we were in Iraq, i.e., to ďŹ nd the weapons of mass distruction that didn’t exist. The WMDs were really Words of Mass Distraction. What are the great unknowns? Death? Maybe. Or have we been down that chute thousands of times? The collapse that we are in? True, strange new territory, but if you weren’t ready before, what can you do now?Cataclysmic earth changes seem very possible unknowns. In her book, Catastrophobia, Barbara Hand Clow claims that our apprehension of future disaster is really memories of past experiences welling up from our subconscious. Can we, then, prepare for the unknown? Poonjaji recommends silence. Since all of our thoughts are just mind chatter, he suggests that we meditate until we know who we are and then everything will ow from there. Once we are in that state, miracles happen and I can add that this certainly is true from my experience. Someone pointed out recently that back in the 1960s we took drugs to get weird and now that the world is weird, people take drugs to get normal. What else might work as a strategy to deal

with hyperchange? You could try Jan’s â€˜ďŹ‚oating’ approach. I met her in Aspen last week and a few years back she stored her stuff so she could â€˜ďŹ‚oat.’ I asked her how she does that. She said she relies on trust and her own exibility that she will ďŹ nd a place to stay and that for the past three years, one friend or another has asked her to house sit, pet sit or share space. While I am enjoying the first unplanned vacation I ever had – no itinerary, no ‘work,’ no one I need to see – I still rented a car and made a few plane reservations. Apart from these minimal choices, however, places to stay and things to do have just happened. For someone who likes to ‘know,’ this seems like progress. A vacation is one thing, but to really â€˜ďŹ‚oat’ or â€˜ďŹ‚ow’ you need a level of trust in yourself to take chances. Can this trait be developed? Let’s hope so because we are all dealing with change at higher levels. More than our minds, it is our hearts that can learn to trust. No matter what happens, we can grow our self conďŹ dence. Of the ‘known knowns’ spoken about, we have been blessed with teachers who embody the states of love, wisdom, compassion, clarity, enlightenment. Prem Baba’s recent satsangs offer proof that the state of love he teaches enables him to move in the world of unknowns with total trust in the Divine. 2012 could be one of those ‘known unknowns’ – an event that seems imminent, perhaps inevitable, probably cosmic and momentous – yet no one knows what exactly is in store, though we think we know when. As a strategy for surviving and thriving

in these strange times where change is the only constant, we need to strengthen our inner resources, trust in ourselves and the Divine. I try a three-pronged approach to crisis: I try to quiet my chattering mind, focus on the maximum beneďŹ cial outcome, and then pray knowing that Divine Providence has taken care of me so far, even when I thought I knew what I wanted. So often the unknown and unexpected have turned out way better than what I had imagined or wished for. H. L. Menchen, the literary critic and cynic claimed that “we are here and it is now. Further than that, all knowledge is moonshine.â€? That may apply to certain of those ‘known knowns’ and things that “we know that we don’t know,â€? but as for those ‘unknown unknowns,’ maybe you need to resort to your favorite relaxant at your ideal retreat and ponder what might be. Mark Sheehan is an environmental activist and retiring real estate broker. His editor thinks he has been on vacation long enough and needs to get back to Maui soon. Not So “Anonymous

Somewhere something incredible is waiting to be known. - Carl Sagan To those of us brought up watching Star Trek, and witnessing the ďŹ rst lunar landing, the quest to journey into the Unknown is part of our generation’s DNA. In the 1960s the counterculture ventured into unknown territory in opposition to the establishment. The Kent State murders of anti-war protestors in 1970 ultimately contributed to an end to the war in Vietnam. Our lofty 1960’s ideals of smiling on your brother, getting together and loving one another, eventually degraded to a 1970’s lifestyle of “sex, drugs and rock ‘n’ roll.â€? The spiritual revolution, natural living and human potential movements sprang from the decaying ashes, eventually becoming part of the mainstream a la Oprah and Whole Foods Market. Now, ďŹ nally, we have the new idealistic group of young people, Anonymous, moving onto the scene, espousing attacks and actions against a corrupt system that is supposedly keeping them in bondage to diminished opportunities and economic and creative malaise. Unfortunately for Anonymous, 16 members have just been arrested for allegedly bombarding and overwhelming PayPal.com with their “Low Orbit Ion Cannonâ€? cyberweapons last December. Apparently, they’re not so Anonymous after all, especially to their Big Brother. Anonymous is promising much more to come in their latest YouTube video, but their actual plans are Unknown. Stay tuned! - Eric T. Richter, publisher

Kahuna Mystic Shares Three Sacred Directives

By Hank Wesselman Ph.D. It was the last day of the year in 1996. It was twilight at the Kilauea overlook in Volcanoes National Park, and my wife Jill and I were in the company of a revered Hawaiian kahuna elder. Hale Makua certainly looked the part with his long bushy white beard and his long hair cascading down his broad back encased in a ashy aloha shirt. Makua, as he was generally known, looked us over slowly in the fading light of this long day as the winds subsided into silence. The air around us felt soft, and our mood reected this, creating a sense of ease between us. Makua was leaning on his magniďŹ cently carved walking stick and I was aware that he had come to a decision about us. “As spiritual warriors,â€? he began, “the path that we walk on is narrow, and it is constrained by three kapu, three sacred directives. Since you have reached that place of knowing, I can offer these kapu to you.â€? “Love all that you see – with humility. In order to love all that we see, this can only come from a place of humility,â€? continued the kahuna, with a grin. “I worked on that one for seven years.â€? “Live all that you feel – with reverence. When we live what we feel – what the mythologist Joseph Campbell meant when he said ‘follow your bliss’ – this leads us inexorably toward reverence, an active sense of respect. This is the foundation stone of the indigenous mind.â€? Makua paused as if to see if we understood. “Know all that you possess – with discipline. When we know all that we possess – and this includes what possesses us – we ďŹ nd our self-discipline. We cannot walk the sacred path without discipline. This is where so many spiritual seekers as well as teachers have stumbled.â€? Together we sat in silence, surrounded by owering ‘ohia trees and small ‘ohelo bushes, with bright green ferns growing directly from the black, stony volcanic substrate in the dying light. I was aware that something quite rare had just occurred. I glanced at Jill and saw tears gathering in her eyes. Makua simply smiled as the quiet deepened and we digested his words. He then ran them by us once more, just to make sure we had it. “When we come from the place of humility, we connect with the energy of compassion,â€? he intoned gently. “This allows us to experience the power of aloha - of love.â€? “When we practice acceptance and live what we feel, we are drawn inexorably toward reverence, an active respect for everyone and everything we encounter in life.â€? “And through knowing what we possess, we ďŹ nd our discipline. And in order to discover who we are as well as where we are, self-discipline is essential, because without it, we cannot progress.â€? - Excerpted from The Bowl of Light: Ancestral Wisdom from a Hawaiian Shaman by Hank Wesselman, Ph.D. (Sound True, May 2010). Mapping The Unknown

By Nancy Friedrich Life is full of unknowns – they are around every corner. We often respond to them with anxiety. And when we realize we are not in control, we seek guidance. Shamans have used divination to receive information for over 50,000 years, particularly in survival situations. Where did the hunters go in order to save the entire tribe from starvation? The stakes were high for the tribe and for the shaman, too, I might add. There was a lot of motivation for the shaman to truly get out of the way, be a hollow bone and travel to the hidden worlds to attain the guidance that was essential for life. Michael Harner, Ph.D., founder of the Foundation for Shamanic Studies, began collecting data from the experiences of westerners traveling to the hidden worlds since the 1970s. He discovered that there is a common hidden reality with three worlds - the upper world, the middle world and the lower world. Just as shamans from every continent have discovered, this is where we encounter the helping spirits that offer altruistic support and guidance for humanity. This enormous research project is being used to construct a map of the hidden universe, to discover how the shamanic experiences of modern westerners compare to those of shamans cross-culturally throughout time. The project is called “The Mapping of Non-ordinary Reality,â€? or MONOR. Harner says that the results are expected to challenge orthodox scientiďŹ c deďŹ nitions of reality. This is a true exploration of the unknown, which turns out, is close at hand. There is much to discover on this amazing adventure we call life! To explore the hidden worlds, come to a workshop! Nancy Friedrich, with the Foundation for Shamanic Studies, teaches The Way of the Shaman, Journeying, Power and Healing originated by Michael Harner. The 2-day workshop will be held October 8-9 at Hale Ho‘omana Retreat Center. Contact Nancy for further info at 808.269.5137, shamanicjourneying@gmail.com or visit shamanism.org.

Book Review

Living A Life Of Reiki

By Marci Winters Shalandra Abbey’s book, Living a Life of Reiki, From Complete Healthcare to Ultimate Freedom in Day to Day Life, is a delight. Her 11 juicy chapters explore the depths of Energy Medicine/ Reiki. A comprehensive reference book, Abbey provides engaging insight into utilizing the power within through our healing hands. In 1936, Hawayo Takata, a Japanese woman born in a sugar cane camp on Kauai, brought Reiki to the West. Reiki is a Japanese word, derived from the words “rei,â€? universal or spiritual wisdom, and “ki,â€? life- force energy - the energy that sustains everything in our existence and can transform to recreate. During a session, it is possible to forget the practitioner’s hands are even touching the body. I personally experienced a wonderful Reiki treatment by a practitioner years ago. I recall being relaxed beyond belief, falling into a deep, deep sleep. Abbey claims that ninety percent of her clients fall asleep before the ďŹ rst three of the twelve hand positions are completed. She also says that “the ďŹ rst steps to health and happiness are recognition and acceptance of what is depleting the healing life-force energy in our bodies.â€? She believes that Reiki is sacred; one must ďŹ rst learn to love self, as this is the foundation of treatment. With Reiki’s gentle approach, both adults and children can beneďŹ t. Abbey practices Reiki on animals, and uses it on food to remove impurities. Simply put, Reiki balances the energy owing in and out of the body. Shalandra Abbey currently lives on Maui. She discovered Reiki in 1988. In 1990, she left her corporate career to relocate to Hawai and become a Reiki Master. Visit her website at ReikiHawaii.com. Marci Winters is an author, ďŹ lmmaker, and astrologer. You can contact her at 808.639.1119.

Simple Shower Filters Can Protect You!

By Judy Phillips After years of tests and research, scientists have deduced that skin absorption of contaminants in municipal water has been highly underestimated and that drinking municipal water may not represent the only or even primary route of exposure. Additionally, the absorption of contaminants through the skin to the body as a whole is not the only damage – it can also affect the skin itself. Most municipal water systems, including the Maui County Water Department, routinely add chlorine to water, to disinfect it and protect the public from disease-causing bacteria that the water or pipes might contain. Unfortunately, some byproducts of chlorine may also be created in the process. So, what are these contaminants that may be in our water? Well, let’s start with chloroform (Trihalomethane or THM) and trichloroethylene (TCE). These two volatile and toxic chemicals have been estimated by the National Academy of Sciences to kill 200-1000 people each year from cancers just by drinking the water. If that isn’t enough to scare you, the real threat is more likely to be air pollution. According to the American Chemical Society, “People are exposed to more potentially harmful indoor pollutants in home, office or car than outdoors.” What’s more, studies by Doctor Julian Andelman, Professor of Water Chemistry, University of Pittsburgh Graduate School of Public Health, uncovered the fact that less chemical exposure occurred from ingesting chlorine-contaminated water than using it to wash clothes or take a shower. Chlorine has been added to disinfect municipal water supplies for over a hundred years. The amount of chlorine added depends on the quality of the water supply, but even if there is no noticeable taste or smell, that does not necessarily mean that chlorine is not present. Let’s talk about the simple act of taking a shower and its ramifications. According to Doctor Andelman, his studies reveal that when the temperature of the water and chemical concentrations increase, and the diameter of the shower head hole decreases, the hazard increases. In fact, his test results show that hot showers (109 degrees F) can free up a large percentage of toxic chemicals into the air. The bottom line is that chlorine, TCE, chloroform and benzene are just a few of the toxins that are easily absorbed through your lungs and into the bloodstream. Additionally, both the heat of your shower and the large surface-to-volume ratio of the small drops of water intensify the vaporization. Wake up, folks! You skin is the largest organ of your body. You warm it up with your shower, and open up the pores, making your skin function like a sponge. Consequently, you not only inhale the chlorine vapors, you also take them in through your skin, directly into your bloodstream. According to scientists, you take in, through your skin, more chlorine in a 10-minute shower than by drinking eight glasses of the same water. Showering and bathing in chemically treated water is a significant risk – but it is also one that you can easily remedy. The best way to combat exposure is to install an inline shower filter. You can find many on Amazon.com. After two weeks of research, the best one I found (and use myself) is the Zeolite Shower Filter. It removes even heavy metals. The bottom line, no one is going to do it for you, it is up to you to protect yourself and your family! Becoming Living Alchemy

By Jody Soltau Mountain and Ger Lyons It has been said that human beings are creatures of habit. Once we’re settled in our ‘comfort zones’ – our familiar surroundings and routines - it can often be difďŹ cult to change. Sometimes, this can be perfect for us; we may be fulďŹ lling our potential, evolving and serving ourselves and the planet exactly where we are. However, when the next step in our evolution calls for altering this ‘ideal world,’ we can find ourselves in confusion, chaos and even despair. The seemingly bad news is that there is no escape. Life is always pulling and pushing us towards healing, consciousness and greater wholeness so we can fully express this amazing and unique version of the Life that runs through each of us. Among an inďŹ nite number of things, the healing at hand may call for the end of a relationship, a business, moving to a new country, or changing the way we eat. These are all invitations to be more of who we truly are, and to deepen our connection with the Source of all Life. The challenge is to accept and move gracefully with the ebb and ow of life, the 180-degree turns, and those nerve-wracking leaps of faith off the cliff. The question is how. Healing begins when we can deeply and honestly look at what inside of us is resisting the shift. It is in this place, where our darkest fears, pain, trauma and confusion meet the Light of Awareness that transformation occurs. If we can open to this process, everything can be seen as Grace in action, and we become the Living Alchemy of Spirit itself. Celtic mystic and healer Ger Lyons returns to Maui with his lifechanging work, Core Transformation, August 19-21 and 26-31. Introductory evening is Thursday, August 18, 7-10 p.m. at the Montessori School of Maui, with a suggested donation of $20. For information, call Jody at 808.269.0591, e-mail gerlyonsmaui@gmai.com, or visit gerlyons.net.

Embracing The Unknown

By Julie Migneault “The day came when the risk to remain tight in a bud was more painful than the risk it took to blossom.â€? AnaĂŻs Nin’s words, a frequently used mantra, ring in my mind as I contemplate the unknown. My own experience of letting go of all that I knew and had worked for, and truly embracing my unknown, has led me fully into my life’s purpose – my True North. Just as AnaĂŻs Nin could no longer risk remaining tight in a bud, I could no longer risk staying safe. From jumping off of the facetious cliff into the unknown, I was given the opportunity to really experience and learn about surrender and trust. I was brought into deeper contact with the Divine spark within me that has led to a much fuller expression of me. It was scary! The process of letting go, of the resistance and the illusion of safety, often is. The truth of the matter is that true safety does not come from external circumstances - it comes from connection and alignment with our inner beings. The key is not to get rid of the fear, but allow it to be present, while consciously choosing to move forward anyway. All is possible when we ďŹ rst align and connect with our inner beings, and from this place of connection embrace the unknown. We are signaling to the universe that we are ready to fully experience and express our Divine natures. Why are you remaining in the bud while your Spirit is ready to bloom? The rewards are great. Allow yourself to blossom. Julie Migneault embraced the unknown and left her corporate career in NYC to live more fully aligned with her true path on Maui. She supports others with spiritual and business coaching and channeling sessions. Contact Julie at julie@julie-migneault.com for your free 15-minute consultation to learn how she can support you on your true path or call 808.446.5426.

Stepping Into The Unknown With Trust By Liah Howard Humans, by nature, want to be in control. That’s why when we approach the edge of the unknown, we prefer to have things all planned out so that we can step into it with conďŹ dence and eager anticipation. Yet the very essence of life is change and mystery, and we are often quite suddenly shoved into the unknown despite our carefully laid plans. Whether as pleasant as an exciting new job, or as difďŹ cult as a sudden illness, we are always being guided by our souls to grow and surrender into life, and to trust even when we don’t know where we’re headed or what we might ďŹ nd along the way. Our ability to handle unexpected change is a reection of the deep soul work we have done. Our souls reside in the present moment, unconcerned with the known or unknown. Connected to the Source, they aren’t attached to a certain way of being in the world, or a certain world at all. If we spend time in daily mediation and in quiet, when our external worlds shift, we have a raft to support us. If we avoid that quiet place within, when our lives get rocked, we panic in the fear of being drowned by the waves of life. This is the fear of the ego, trying to cling desperately to the familiar, the idea of who we are and how we move through the world. Sometimes it takes an event or situation that shatters our worlds to guide us to a deeper sense of surrender and soulful being.

I recently spoke with a friend named Grace who endured a terrible car accident that crushed the left side of her body, took away her ability to speak, and put her in a coma for three months. Four years later, having recovered somewhat from the accident, I asked her what the gift of that experience was. She said, “Well, Liah, pretty much everything can be taken away from you. But if you

The Call

have a relationship with God, and you know how much you are loved, then you can deal with the rest. She went on to say that although she lost her partner, her job, and her ability to walk and speak as she once did, she felt that now she was living a life that was “a living expression of love and her life was an offering of love. I could feel the joy in her voice and the deep and sincere gratitude to be alive, even though her physical body was compromised. The unknown slammed into her life while she was crossing the street on a sunny day. She did not check out of life and become depressed and afraid. She called upon her spirit and the fellowship of her spiritual community to help her navigate the unknown land of being disabled and dependent. Though the journey was arduous, she is presently pain-free, happy, and inspiring others with her story of hope and love. Whatever challenge you are facing today, know that deep within your being a prayer is being answered. Grace had always wanted to be a living example of Gods’ love and now she is. This is an intrinsically loving universe. Let go into the unknown and trust that you are being divinely guided and loved. Maui is a spiritual experience, a calling to a higher octave. So many of us arrive with a wider vision - one of service to our higher health, to a more creative life through art, to advance spiritually, to provide health and wellness. From the clients I am working with now, I see there is a growing interest in: community, permaculture, farming, retreats and eco-village living. There are also sellers who have developed properties that meet these criteria. Their decision to move on means that some buyers will be starting with a huge advantage in implementing their vision. If you have a family vision, a group of like-minded friends and financial resources, now is the moment of power to actualize that dream.

Going Out On A Limb By Gina, LMT

“Every step I took since the moment I could walk was a step towards ďŹ nding you.â€? - Nicholas Sparks Having been blessed with a life that consistently brings me into the unknown, I know that each time I am confronted with a new situation I will get through it. Whether I walk through it with grace and integrity or I’m pulled through it resisting and questioning, I will get to the other side. I have been asked many times how I have dealt with the numerous challenges that I have been confronted with so often in my life. I have been a pedestrian hit by an accelerating car; I have buried both parents and a child, had ďŹ nancial upset, dealt with my challenged sons, lost many friends and sometimes my way. Each time I am able to walk through an issue, it helps to transform me into the woman that I am today. Since 1990, I have been involved in a transformational journey that has radically changed my life as I strive to be able to live a soulful life in all areas – both professionally and personally with myself and in a relationship. I believe that each of us has the capacity

to truly live from our soul’s direction and not from our ego or our mind’s control. In my professional world, this is a given. There is no doubt or questioning as I totally surrender to the unknown and know in my bones that I can fully trust my inner wisdom to always show me what is needed for the client’s highest good. Throughout the years, I have learned to ďŹ nd this level of depth and assuredness in my personal life. In my daily walks on the beach, exercising and meditation, I can still my mind and be fully present with myself and know that I will always be shown the way. For me, the greatest challenge in the unknown is in a personal relationship with a man. This can bring up many levels of uncertainty, doubt and fear. Four years ago, I set intent to not just be in a

relationship - I upped the ante. I truly wanted a healthy relationship. My intention is to not just be with someone who is compatible, but to be with a man who is a parallel to my world. While discussing this with my therapist, he asked if I realized how much this would narrow the ďŹ eld of availability for me. I answered yes, but I was not compromising and not settling. I knew what I wanted and I would continue to work on myself and remain open as my life unfolded. So while I was walking through what others might call life’s dramas, I was actually learning how to become a woman who is ready to engage with a man at this level. Having recently met a man who speaks to my heart and my soul has allowed me to step unto this unknown path. I do not know where it will take me, but I am willing, ready and able to go out on a limb and say yes - I want this and will walk into this unknown area with grace and integrity. How Posture Affects Your Health

By Michael Pascoe, D.C. The role of posture in the overall health of an individual is virtually overlooked in most health care settings and is simply considered a by-product of aging. However, there is mounting evidence that posture (structural alignment) inuences most, if not all, aspects of good health ranging from pulmonary function (breathing/lung capacity) to normal hormonal function. One such postural alteration is called hyperkyphosis, a condition of excessive curve in the upper back. This also results in a forward-leaning head. In fact, the alignment of the entire spine is altered to adapt and compensate for this distortion. From the Journal of the American Geriatric Society in October, 2004: “Hyperkyphosis is associated with restrictive pulmonary disease and poor physical function, suggesting that hyperkyphosis might be associated with other adverse health outcomes.‌posture affects and moderates every physiologic function from breathing to normal hormonal production. Spinal pain, headache, mood, blood pressure, pulse, and lung capacity are among the functions most easily inuenced by posture.â€? These alterations in posture pull on the meninges, a structure that is attached to the spine, the skull, the spinal cord and the brain. When the vertebrae lose normal position to one another, the meninges are pulled, pulling on the nerves, causing any possible combination of symptoms. Even subtle postural changes can manifest as seemingly unrelated symptoms, which will show a failure to respond to therapies aimed at treating a speciďŹ c condition instead of the whole person. Many people will now remember Grandma telling them to sit up straight. She was right after all! Actually, these postural distortions are involuntary and can’t be corrected by simply being aware and trying to stand straight. It requires some help from a technique like Advanced Biostructural Correction™ which facilitates correction of bones that the body cannot self-correct, providing the opportunity for true healing. Dr. Michael Pascoe recently relocated to Maui and is available for consultations and to answer any questions you might have. Call 808.242.7500 or e-mail mpascoe@me.com.

In Latin, It’s Called ‘Basio Diem’ By DreamingBear Basio Diem, Latin for ‘kiss the day,’ is my motto when facing uncertain times. As a generation, we collectively stand upon the threshold of an unknown world, which awaits our uniďŹ ed intention in order for the wave function to collapse into being the particulate of this present moment. We humans have to start understanding that we can no longer contaminate what we are, taint our pure consciousness with fossil-fuel thinking and polluted ideas passed down over centuries that no longer serve us. We are the fresh drink of life that this world has been desperate and longing for, but do we have the ability, nay the determination to change an old paradigm, that nature is here to serve us, and that we are the owners of the planet? Biblical scholars will tell you that the concept of “humans were given dominionâ€? over the planet is misleading. “Dominionâ€? is meant as more of a caretaker position, and really means that we are here to serve other creatures and the Earth itself into their highest good. When do we realize that we are part of the 6.8 billion human jigsaw-puzzle-piece set of each other’s joy, where everyone ďŹ ts together when we’re not trying to emulate the same mold? You are unique, and in a world of inďŹ nite possibilities, why would we ever keep making the same predictable outcome choices? It begins now as a seed planted in your heart-mind, grows into a grassroots movement within you, and becomes a living Lovevolution as

your very life. We are learning, as a global culture how we can reshape reality according to our most beautiful visions and dreams. Once we disengage the observer, a.ka. the auto-pilot-personality programming of the patriarchy, everything turns into innumerable spheres of potential, because we are the song of the spheres, literally! The same is true of our work lives, ďŹ nances, relationships, our interactions with each other and other species on this planet. All we have to do is recalibrate, MAT #8350

re-attune, so that the vibrational frequency that we are in right now, can be tuned up. We have not only an awesome opportunity, we have a rare responsibility, and that is to be able to respond to our current conditions, which are saying to us in no uncertain terms, now is the time for you to rise into your fullness! There is no one being who contributes more than any other. We must all be poised to fulďŹ ll our life’s purpose if we are to succeed together. The environment, the social scene, and even the economy, are all reections of our collective internal state of equilibrium. It’s time for a new value system in which the highest priority is creating a world where each individual can selfactualize in the way that is best and healthiest for them. Everyone is invited to this table of turning our lives into living masterpieces. Each breath is our opportunity to re-write the existence we are co-authoring now. We are tilling the ďŹ eld of tomorrow in our conversations today, so no more small talking ourselves into being small. Let’s just agree that the future is going to be the most enchanted version of existence that we can co-create. Basio Diem! Spiritual Woodstock In The Desert

By Shannon Skillern Bhakti yoga, one of the eight paths of yoga as defined by ancient Hindu scriptures, is the basis of an interesting breed of festival taking place this September in Joshua Tree, California. Bhakti Fest, coined a spiritual Woodstock, began as an aroundthe-clock kirtan celebration, inviting attendees to unify with the Divine through chanting, mantra, and call-and-response-style musical entertainment. Now in its fourth year, the festival to be held in Joshua Tree, California, September 8-11, has grown to be a sort of conscious retreat, complete with an all-star lineup of yoga teachers, workshop practitioners, healers, raw and vegan food vendors, clothing, gifts, and non-profit booths. Among the headliners this year: Krishna Das, Donna DeLory, Jai Uttal, Deva Premal and Miten, Wah!, Shantala, Dave Stringer, Shiva Rea, Saul David Raye, Seane Corn, Bryan Kest, Mark Whitwell, MC Yogi and Amanda. Scale, popularity and all-star lineup aside, the Festival stays true to its Bhakti roots, offering up a more authentic and intimate festival experience than most. “I come to this event every year because it is magical,” says Jeanie Kirk, an attendee at last year’s Bhakti Fest. “There is something mystical about the desert setting, the colors and music. When a crowd of people this large gathers to perform sacred practices, a shift occurs and there is a collective feeling of bliss and elevated consciousness.” The festival also offers unique content, with workshops on such topics as Fractal Dreaming and Yoga and Ecology alongside mainstay speakers such as Ram Dass (via DVD) and Radhanath Swami. With altars everywhere, a leave-it-all-behind-dance-all-night vibe, and endless opportunities to open the body and the heart, Bhakti Fest is indeed the physical manifestation of the path of love. For more information, updated lineup and ticket pricing, visit bhaktifest.com. Shannon Skillern is a yogini, designer, marketing, events, and creative services visionary serving the conscious community in Los Angeles. She can be reached via email at shannonskillern@gmail.com.

Meet Maui’s Skin Detective

By Rev. Jill Carl

I ďŹ rst met Dr. Micki Ly when I was acting as the chauffeur for a friend undergoing a surgical procedure in her ofďŹ ce. She was as engaging and informative then as she is today. During medical school, she became bored with the subject matter and took a year off. She spent her time in pathology research, learning everything there is to know about the inner body. While volunteering at a free clinic, she came to realize that dermatology was the only thing that ignited her passion. So, she returned to Ohio State and completed her medical degree, residency, and specialty. About 11 years ago, Dr. Ly came to Maui to enjoy the sun, sand and surf. Like so many before her, she fell in love with Maui and asked herself, “What if?â€? She returned to Ohio, only to long for our glorious weather. She applied for and landed a position here with Kaiser Permanente. Five years later she started her private practice, which is thriving in Kahului today. Dr. Ly ďŹ nds dermatology quite unique, like “playing detectiveâ€? and explains that Derm is the study of the skin, hair and nails. She can tell what is going on in a person simply by looking at those three things, since signs of problems will manifest on the skin ďŹ rst. This is why she suggests a yearly exam. She says treatment for most skin issues can be simple if caught early enough. The skin is the body’s largest organ and there are some simple dos and don’ts when it comes to caring for our skin, especially living on sunny

Maui where there is a higher rate of skin cancer. Some sun is good, provides Vitamin D, but as with most things, a little goes a long way. Dr. Ly suggests we avoid the sun whenever possible, between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. When that’s not possible, wear sunscreen, preferably a SPF 30 “physical sun block, zinc oxide, which blocks both the UVA and UVB rays, and can now be found in a cosmetically elegant form, meaning no longer white.

A chemical sunscreen needs to be applied 30 minutes prior to going out in the sun before protection begins, and then reapplied often. In addition to sunscreen, she recommends that to keep youthful skin, you drink plenty of water, moisturize with a water-based product, take the anti-oxidants Vitamin A and Vitamin C (as a topical), making sure it penetrates. And if you are over 30 , Retin A slows the aging process and also helps acne. Dr. Ly says that if you did not have acne as a teen, you can have a second chance in your 30s and 40s - lucky us! Besides cancer, other things that can plague the skin are natural aging and volume loss due to weight loss. One beneďŹ t to a little extra weight is its “plumpingâ€? effect on the face. Short of this, there are “volumizingâ€? procedures: ďŹ ller is used to replace the collagen loss and can last six months to two years, or permanently, depending on the procedure chosen. Healthy and aesthetically alluring skin can enhance your attractiveness and self-esteem. Dr. Ly has a busy, thriving practice due to her extensive knowledge, surgical experience with a specialty in eye lid surgery, personable demeanor and devotion to her patients, as well as her ability to make them feel as if they are in very good hands If you have questions or concerns, you can call her ofďŹ ce at 808.877.6526. First, Empty Your Cup

By Heather Gangnier For ten years I was co-director of the Hypnotherapy Academy of America in Santa Fe, New Mexico. On the ďŹ rst day of a new class, we always told a story about ‘beginner’s mind,’ the idea being that if your mind was too full there would be no room for anything new to ďŹ nd a space to grow and ourish. The story went something like this: A Zen monk was sitting down to tea with a new student. While the master quietly served tea, the student talked about Zen. “Master, I have waited my whole life for this time to be here and learn from you. I have often thought about what it would be like and all the things that I will learn.â€? The master poured the student’s cup to the brim, and then kept pouring. The student watched the cup overowing and overowing until he could no longer restrain himself. “It’s full! No, it is over-full!â€? the student cried. “You are like this cup,â€? the master replied, “How can I show you Zen unless you ďŹ rst empty your cup?â€? The unknown can be a brilliant opportunity to let ourselves move away from what we think we know and allow ourselves to be led into a new way of being. Our minds are full of ideas and beliefs that keep us out of present time. When we set aside our preconceived notions and a propensity toward intellectualization, we can access our greatest resources – the intuitive wisdom and true power of our hearts and higher minds or superconscious minds. Then we live in the present, connecting heaven and earth. Perhaps that is all we need as we step into the unknown. Heather Gangnier will co-teach a 200-hour hypnotherapy certiďŹ cation training this fall through VTEC. She also assists clients in one-on-one consciousness-raising. She is a clinical hypnotherapist, certiďŹ ed in NLP, certiďŹ ed rebirther and a licensed massage therapist. Visit heathergangnier.com or call 808.442.2950.

A Place Where Nothing Matters

By Magick The Unknown exists in a place I call the Nothingness. It’s the place where the western mind (the logical, reasoning part that typically runs our lives, quite unconsciously) disappears. It’s a place where there is no me, no you, no differences, no time, no thought. Just space. Nothing matters in the Nothingness. Fears and resistance don’t exist in the Nothingness. Even if we fear the unknown, when we are in the Nothingness, that fear doesn’t exist there. Most people have some degree of attachment to certainty, even if they know it will bring discomfort. The gift of Nothingness is that it dissolves this need for certainty. I was introduced to the Nothingness on my ďŹ rst trip to Hawaii to study Huna. Hiking a remote and powerful part of Kauai, a tree called me over. Placing my third eye to the tree, I embraced it. What happened next was one of my ďŹ rst “mysticalâ€? experiences. I disappeared into what I now know as the Nothingness. I have no idea how long it lasted. I have no idea what happened. It didn’t matter. Nothing mattered. This experience changed my life by assisting the ever ongoing process of dissolving my identity. Maui is a sacred, holy place, a powerful vortex amplifying all change and transformation. All around us are opportunities to slow down and connect with this magical, powerful land that can facilitate anything, including journeys into Nothingness. Taking Safe Leaps Of Faith By Judy Levy As an Aries woman, I have continually taken leaps of faith and have always landed safely on my feet. Now I ponder my good fortune that I have always been protected. In the past, every “crisis in my life always turned into “opportunity when the situation played out. Two years ago, when my (former) husband suggested we move to Maui, I quickly agreed. “Yes, I said eagerly to the biggest leap of faith I had ever considered. We would sell our business and have some income coming in each month while we launched the new business on Maui. “Starting over at 60 sounded like quite an adventure! We visioned our new project daily for six months. Well, you know how to make God laugh, right? Tell “Her your plans! Well, part of the plan played out the way I’d hoped; I got my new store, but had to let go of the husband and lots of “stuff, i.e. the illusion of security. Keep trusting is the key! My “new life is exquisite. Now, I’m ready for the next leap of faith, to follow my inspired vision to co-create the “Over the Rainbow, a Global Gathering in 2013 to “celebrate our conscious evolution. Let’s invite some of the greatest visionaries, quantum scientists and creative geniuses to come spend a week on Maui to share and celebrate new solutions for our glorious future. Come join me in this exciting new project and let’s make even grander magic on Maui! Judy Levy is a Reiki master, mystical wise woman and co-creator of Temple of Peace - Lotus Heart in Haiku, and new Lotus Heart II in Paia. She invites you to come feel the “Vortex of Peace and browse the selection of books, gifts, crystals, clothing, jewelry and more. Call 808.575.5220 or visit lotusheartmaui.com for more information.

Does Organic Hair Color Exist?

By Marianne Callari Is there a difference, does it exist? After extensive research, I have come to the conclusion that there is no such thing as organic hair color. Vegetable dyes and henna are truly the only things that deposit color in a natural way. The challenge with both of these options is in the formulation of the color. Choosing this method requires experience with knowing the end result once it is applied to the hair. Depending on your expectations, these could be good choices. People who have chemical sensitivities may not have a choice and this may be their only option. If covering grey is your preference this method will work for you. Once you plan to lighten your hair color in any way, a lifting agent is required and it is always in the form of a chemical. The industry has come a long way. Non-ammonia hair color has been developed which eliminates the ammonia chemicals, greatly decreasing the amount of damage done to the hair. Certain types of hair color include coconut oil and soybean in the developers in order to help with the overall integrity of the hair, but in no way is this considered organic. I have found this to be beneďŹ cial in coloring hair throughout the years. Manufacturers use the terms natural and organic on their labels to give the impression that some consideration was given to this, but really only 3 percent of the ingredients used have to comply with this claim. So, choose your stylist wisely, ask questions about the products that they might be using, and do your own research. Marianne Callari is an experienced hair stylist, emphasizing a natural approach to hair care. She has worked and received continuing education in major cities across the U.S. and now lives on Maui. The Unknown

By Eliza Bassett We are always in the space and time of the unknown. One of our big unknowns is where do we go when we sleep? When we wake every day, there is an awareness of our surroundings. Our senses ďŹ ll in their messages. Then our brain, hopefully at peace from the night’s rest, interprets these messages. It is an amazing thing to realize how much our minds can be on ‘autopilot’ about what each sensory message means. Some ďŹ nd their brains racing at a million miles an hour. Others may be assaulted with overwhelming feelings of defeat, lack, loss, and other intense emotions. Another unknown is who are we? Inhabiting this human body, we dimly recall another time and space where we were not here on this earth. We can watch and listen to our children tell us of when they were not here, but elsewhere, living with others in a place of love and light. Of course, many spiritual traditions have worked diligently through the centuries to bring surcease to the questioning members of their churches, temples and retreat centers. When providing answers according to these traditions, sometimes these messages are distorted by the human ego of the people delivering the words. Thus, those who can discern that thread of ego, lack of truth in the texts, turn elsewhere for support when facing the unknowns of human life. We are at a nexus. We are at the bridge that will span from those daily systems our minds and emotions have agreed to for our whole lives into a radical rearrangement regarding our supports and daily ow. Please ďŹ nd whatever words, thoughts, music, dance and other practices that support your whole being during this time of revolution. Peace to all! Eliza Bassett is an astrologer and shamanic practitioner. For an analysis of the upcoming equinox in September, please visit her blog at the end of August – eyesofheaven.wordpress.com. The Comfort Zone

By Suzan Proia, C.Ht. Do you remember the song refrain, “Don’t it always seem to go that you don’t know what you’ve got ‘til it’s gone?â€? It is a poignant reminder of how we fail to appreciate what we have until it is too late. Recognizing our blessings is a way of remaining grounded and grateful, living in the moment. As enticing as it is to step into the great unknown, we must be cognizant of what we leave behind. Familiar situations and relationships may lose their intense luster, but they also create a place of comfort and peace. This is a double-edged sword. Moving ahead and allowing change to happen is part of our lives. Our leaps of faith (moving from one locale to another, changing jobs or careers, letting go of relationships or allowing ourselves to begin new friendships ) are events that require courage. The ip side is also true. Remaining in a challenging situation can be just as courageous. If you run away in order to avoid a difďŹ cult situation, your problems may follow you, no matter how far you travel. The trick is knowing when to dig in and make the effort to save what you have, redesign what doesn’t work, or let go and walk away. If your relationship isn’t working, are either of you sabotaging it out of fear, or are the two of you wrong for each other? Is your job a poor ďŹ t, or have you stopped making an effort? The lure of the unknown can be a siren’s call – examine your motivation before tossing things aside. Listen carefully to your inner guidance, look before you leap, and happy landings! Suzan specializes in eliminating stress, weight, insomnia, grief, resolving relationship issues, and personal excellence. For a free consultation, call 808.870.8754 or visit MyPowerfulSelf.com

Om for Organic Maui

By Mary Carol Breckenridge and Paul W. Gangnier OM (regarded as three sounds, a-u-m) is a sacred Sanskrit mantra symbolic of three major Hindu deities (God or Goddess). To many, Om is the highest of all vibrations. When I OM for Maui in my mind, this creates the highest intention and vibration for this island and myself. To me there is no higher and more loving thought than loving our land, the sea, universe and our selves. Organic has become a popular word for wholesomeness, natural, chemical-free, nurtured, non-GMO and conservation. This was the lifestyle of our ancestors. The concept of “OM for Organic Maui” represents the intention and focus to motivate stores, companies, neighbors, friends and all people to awaken to how were treating our bodies, land, waters, skies and world. OM – Support higher energy organically grown foods. OM – Promote greener lifestyles - solar energies and energy-efficient vehicles. OM – Insist upon 100% recyclable consumables - Maui-made and imported. OM – Practice all things that generate the flow of positive beneficial energy. Support only companies and trades that advocate and practice respect and conservation of natural resources. Awaken neighbors and friends to a greener way, showing them by example the potential for a better, cleaner, greener, healthier, happier world. We can do it. This way of living takes intention, courage and action, requiring all of us to be teachers, leaders, thinkers and especially doers. OM for Maui government. We do not need “progress” as in bigger faster roads nor another subdivision or mall. Smaller roads, better mass transportation and meticulous planning will enhance a more natural, culturally-rich tropical Maui while encouraging more tourism and setting an important example for the world. You can do it! We can do it! OM for Organic Maui! For further information contact Paul W. Gangnier at PeaceInMaui@Gmail.com or call 808. 463.8255. See our new website at TheHighestThoughts.com. Step Past Self-Absorption

And Truly Listen To Others

By Anne Rice If you are like most, you have questions about the future. Every week I hear about environmental catastrophes and radiation, inflation and financial collapse, comets and magnetic pole shifts, astrological and Mayan theories, time speeding up. Anticipation builds as world changes ripple through our systems. The question is, where is all of this leading? Holding the global reality while walking through the day’s routine can feel, strangely, like living in two worlds at once. There is no telling what the collective result will be, and I know just about as much as the next person about the details of what’s to come. How each of us will experience the coming changes and feel them in our bones is yet to be told. So we are left with what is right in front of us – ourselves. Life is a collective movement toward an unknown and we will each have completely unique experiences. Still, in knowing this one thing, it is safe to say that we each have valuable roles to play; we have the power to affect the collective outcome by what we bring to the table. Will we choose to open our hearts and let our defenses fall? Will we surrender our small ways and expand? The choice lies with each of us to let go of the greed and materialism of our pasts and accept true fulfillment – to step past self-absorption and truly listen to one another. Maybe we need even harder circumstances to evolve to this, maybe not. One thing is for sure: our most creative moments come from urgent necessity. Chaos always returns to stillness. And the power of the human heart is immeasurable. Anne Rice, MA, BMP, HP, CH, ACH, ST has a private practice on Maui. She is author of “The Healing Power of the Deep Heart: A Guide to Healing Disharmony and Disease.” Anne can be reached at anne@schoolofthedeepheart.com or 808.214.8142. The Breath Of Sleep

Paul O’Brien is an author, spiritual counselor and founder of Divination.com, with a mission to help people make better decisions for success and happiness.

By Paul O’Brien Paulo:, After 30 years of a “wonderful marriage,â€? as my husband called it, he’s asking for a divorce. We are both 55 and I believe there’s another woman. He’s apparently been planning for 8 years. I thought we had the perfect marriage: beautiful home, kids through college, ready for retirement. Now, I’m told, I will need to get a job and take care of myself. I have told him that I’m willing to forgive and forget! How can he be so selďŹ sh and cruel? I have cut his hair, done his laundry and raised our children for 30 years, moved eight times for his job and found employment for myself. - Barb, Houston, TX Figuring out his psychology is not relevant now. Your long-term unawareness is the real cause of your current bitterness, which hurts you more than it hurts him. As for him, good riddance! Become as self-soothing and objective as possible and you’ll make better decisions. Such a transition from extreme co-dependence to independence is challenging, but you must make your own decisions independently of what anyone else thinks. You may have some community property rights and certainly more options than you can clearly see. Things are never as bad as they seem and come with a silver lining that we don’t recognize for months or years. Start building faith in yourself. It’s a new life for you now. Focus on taking care of yourself for a change! As difďŹ cult as the transition is, it could be enlightening. It hurts like hell to be blindsided and rejected, and it’s difďŹ cult not to claim pure victimhood and prolong the pain. Forgive yourself for being so naive and look for new opportunities as time heals your wounds, which it will. Get counseling and avoid despair as best you can.

By Michael Krugman Your breath can be one of the most powerful tools in your quest for optimum vitality and well being. That is a truism in all forms of bodywork and self-healing. And it is never more true than when it’s your sleep that needs healing. However, the breath of sleep is markedly different from the breath of waking. Understanding this paradox is a key to the deep, restful sleep we all need. And it’s especially true for those who suffer from disturbed sleep. When you’re awake and active, breath volume is high, as much as ďŹ ve or six liters per breath during vigorous exercise. Stop and rest, and breath volume declines considerably, to perhaps half a liter. Lie down, and it drops even further. Then, during sleep onset, breath volume sinks another 15 percent. At the same time, there is a shift away from diaphragmatic breathing toward more “costalâ€? breathing in which there is relatively greater movement of the chest. Now, many people consider “deep diaphragmatic breathingâ€? to be a kind of panacea, a cure for all diseases. But, as we’ve just seen, the breath of sleep is neither deep nor diaphragmatic. The breath of sleep is shallow, chest breathing. You may never have noticed, but your body knows it perfectly well. Every time you fall asleep, your breath automatically makes that shift, whether you want it to or not. How, then, should you breathe to enable easy sleep? Just breathe naturally. As you breathe in, simply allow your breath to arrive. As you breathe out, just let it go. By allowing your breath be light, easy, soft, and unhurried, you are setting the scene for peaceful, restorative sleep. It will come to you sweetly, without any effort on your part.

How I Became A Channel

By Debbie Dehm I am a channel for the Goddess of Compassion, Quan Yin. It is something that makes me very happy, but something I never expected. I was a member of a spiritualist church in Illinois and we had sĂŠances and development classes, but I wasn’t a medium yet and didn’t know if I ever would be. I was more interested in the healing aspects of the church. On a visit to the grounds of a spiritualist camp in Indiana, I saw a beautiful statue of Quan Yin next to a bench and I sat down to meditate. I didn’t know who the statue was and when someone walked by I asked. When she said it was the Goddess of Compassion, I decided to meditate on what compassion meant. I had been reading a book by the Dalai Lama and he said they often contemplate virtues to embody them. I also asked Quan Yin to become one of my guides so I could learn more about compassion. Nothing happened for about a year until I attended a Tibetan monk’s concert. When the people sitting next to me left and did not return, I felt a presence in the seat next to me. I asked, “Who are you?â€? I heard, “I am Quan Yin and I have come to be your guide as you requested.â€? I was overjoyed and cried, so happy and honored to have her come to me. I ďŹ rst received personal growth messages and then I started channeling during a weekly reiki circle. She would come into my body, give messages and transmit energy through touch, toning and my eyes. When I moved to Arizona, I started a more public channeling once a month. You can read her messages for the last year on my website compassionatehealing.biz. Follow me on Facebook for further updates. Debbie Dehm is a nationally-certiďŹ ed Hawaii licensed massage therapist and reiki master. For upcoming events with Quan Yin or more information, visit her website or call her at 808.856.2065.

Enjoy The Art Of Abhyanga By Jackie and Dave Reed “By using oil massage daily, a person is endowed with pleasant touch, trimmed body parts and becomes strong, charming and least affected by old age." - Charaka Samhita Vol.1, V:88-89 The oldest of the three ancient treatises of Ayurveda, the Charaka Samhita, encourages Abhyanga, or self-oil massage, as a daily practice. In Sanskrit, the word sneha can be translated as both “oilâ€? and “love.â€? It is said that the effects of Abhyanga are similar to those received when one is inundated with love. Like the experience of being loved, Abhyanga can give one a deep feeling of stability and warmth. According to Ayurveda, there are seven layers of tissue in the body, referred to as dhatus. The deepest layer is Shukra, which is responsible for vitality and energy. For oil to reach the Shukra dhatu, it must be massaged into the body for 800 matras (Indian musical beats). To give this attention to your entire body, you will most likely need 15 minutes to perform this self- massage. To begin, heat one cup of oil in a pot of hot water until the oil reaches a warm, comfortable temperature. Sesame oil, known as the “King of Oils,â€? is tridoshic and therefore safe for all doshas (mind and body types) to use. Stand or sit on an old towel in a room free from wind. Apply the oil to the entire body using long strokes on the limbs and circular strokes on the joints. As you perform your Abhyanga, say positive afďŹ rmations to yourself. When your massage is complete, enjoy a warm bath or shower, using minimal soap. Jackie and Dave Reed own and operate Maui Herbs, an Ayurvedic Healing Center in Kihei. Both are clinical Ayurveda specialists. Jackie specializes in pulse analysis; Dave is a doctor of chiropractic and Vedic Astrologer. To learn more about Ahbyangha and other Ayurvedic treatments, call 808.879.9920 or check out their website at MauiHerbs.net.

Accepting Gifts Of Grace

By Lynn Kennedy I am a lover of the “Unknown” – a devotee of “The Great Mystery.” There is something about the vast, open-ended and unpredictable that excites and intrigues me. I enjoy being surprised by the magic and miracles that manifest themselves from the unknown – always unavoidably perfect. Countless times I have joyfully stepped into the arms of the unknown, most recently moving to Maui with my daughter after an effortless sale of my business in California. We landed in a vacation rental available for only ten days and where we were to live or offer our services was completely unknown. My daughter found her place in eight days nearby her friend with whom she now works. I found my place the next day, just minutes from where I would later have my j.o.b. (Joy of Being). I have come to realize that a great key to being in a relationship with the unknown is to surrender. Letting go of the need to know and control invites life to have its way with us. Inspiration, guidance and countless gifts of grace come flooding in to uplift and support our journey because we were made for these times. With arms and hearts wide open, eyes raised to the heavens and a resounding call of “yes,” the magnificent transformation has begun. Collectively lifting the veil, the unknown is revealed to be our very selves. Lynn Kennedy, a Reiki Master-Teacher, offers private and small classes for all Reiki levels. She provides insight and inspiration, creating greater clarity, peace and freedom for her clients and students. Sessions may include any combination of services and are available in person and by phone. Contact her at amberlotuslynn@yahoo.com or 808.446.2002.

Create Art From Your Feelings

By Lavhana Believe that with your feelings and your work you are taking part in the greatest; the more strongly you cultivate this belief, the more will reality and the world go forth from it. - Rainer Maria Rilke It almost sounds cliché; however, the reality is that ever since we were born, we have been stepping into the unknown! Becoming comfortable and embracing this simple truth requires a proper attunement of one’s consciousness applied to one’s own unique path. Ever since we have entered this earthy plane, we have each internalized our experiences into feelings. The reality is that it takes great discipline and hard work to become comfortable in one’s own skin. Through my own journey, I share with you the need to step into your own subconscious world of feelings and validate how important these feelings are, not only to validate, but to illuminate the art of those feelings. Consciously traveling into the subconscious realms of our feelings, and then tangibly creating with these same feelings, allows us to also heal our lives from past experiences. The fun of being artistic and creative, fused with what we are feeling, is a wonderful equation that yields healing results. When you are able to manifest works of art from your feelings, you have healing. At my moments of greatest despair, I have created magnificent works of impression. These works continue to amaze and inform not only me – in that they are an expression of my realized feelings – but they inspire others to step into their own unknowns. I encourage all of you to express what you feel and to reveal your own healing through art. Lavhana is a world-renowned artist who resides here on Maui. She holds all forms of art classes at Lotus Heart Gifts at the Temple of Peace in Haiku. She also teaches a Course in Miracles and her classes encourage deep spiritual healing. Moving From The Unknown To Freedom

By Maribeth Theisen I have noticed that the process by which many evolve spiritually, I also see as people grow to master life issues. At ďŹ rst, many are in the realm of the Unknown: Is there intelligence in our design? They begin to wonder and become aware of possibilities as they observe nature or small miracles unfolding. Something within stirs – there really might be a Higher Power at work here, and they start seeking – reading, meditating, praying, chanting. The moments of connection and joy motivate them to continue practicing their chosen techniques. They now believe in a Presence, and want to experience it more. They make lifestyle changes to support their progress on a spiritual path. They study and practice more with the goal of a stronger, more continuous experience of the Divine that is reected in their countenance, words, and actions, as they move toward freedom. You progress through these same stages when you move beyond a challenge. Initially, you are not aware it is a problem until an incident or conversation brings it to your attention. For example, maybe there is a romantic break-up. Focusing inward, you notice there has been a pattern: “This is the third time a lover has told me I’m possessive/unavailable/moody (ďŹ ll in the blank).â€? You read a self-help book, talk to friends, and suddenly the light turns on. You clearly see the pattern. Then you look for the cause and discover, perhaps, that it was modeled to you during your childhood. You are motivated to change the pattern and journal, work with a counselor, join a self-help group. You become sensitive to your emotions and thought patterns and begin to consciously choose new ideas and feelings. One day you look back and realize that it hasn’t even been an issue for quite awhile. You are free. If you ever notice yourself stuck in a particular behavior or on your spiritual journey, use some of the methods described above to move from the Unknown to Freedom. Maribeth Theisen, LCSW, CHt is a hypnotherapy instructor and psychotherapist offering EMDR, NLP, PSYCH-K, and hypnotherapy. She is co-host of Maui Well Being on Akaku, and is co-teaching a 200-hour hypnotherapy certiďŹ cation training at VITEC this fall. Watch for introductory classes in the calendar listings.

Regarding Your Spiritual GPS‌

By Grace Fung Where do you think you are going? Got a plan, a goal? Does uncertainty make you feel uncomfortable, or more alive, or both? When you reach out to the world, the universe, are you also reaching in? How do you best experience yourself and who are you experiencing? Imagine a world with no other life form – how then would you experience yourself? Does being you require that you have a role or purpose that can be named? And, who would you be without it? Where would you be if you were not here? And, would you then be a different you? Can you be you – are you in control of your outer persona – or is your outer persona in control of you? Has your outer persona rewritten your inner persona – and how often? How many layers of you have there been? Can you imagine, back before you were named, how you ďŹ rst you experienced being you? Back then you had an empty memory bank waiting for your input. You received data from your 5 senses and started programming your mind with all the rules and lessons learned. You were a novice programmer with no handbook, but in your ďŹ rst year you were brilliant. On top of all of the basic rules, you developed ever more complex structures with your values and beliefs and, yes, your ďŹ rst outer persona. One outer persona led to another and another, always striving for perfection. However, in the center of you is the ďŹ rst you who is perfect – but unknown.
