Dying To Find Inner Peace?

By Lisa Jones Most people are afraid of death. Not only afraid, but terrified. The thought of losing a loved one or pondering one’s own demise, is frightening for many. The ironic thing is that once you face the fear of death, and even welcome the notion, an immense amount of inner peace comes your way. Please don’t take my words lightly. A lot of work is involved in facing your fear of death. This task requires contemplation, journaling, emoting and digging deep into your thoughts, feelings and emotions. One of the best ways I’ve discovered to face your fear of death, is to imagine yourself on your deathbed and ask yourself a series of questions. Do I have any regrets? Who mattered most to me in my life? What do I wish I could do over? To whom do I owe an apology? To whom do I owe a note of appreciation for how they helped me in life? How could I have loved more fully? In reflecting back on my life, am I content or agitated? Once you’ve answered these questions, you’ll be able to take action on what you’ve discovered. It’s never too late to make a change in your life, to make amends, or to tell someone you love and appreciate them. Even if that person has passed, you can still write a letter with the intention of them receiving it in Spirit. Getting your life in order, from the perspective of looking back at it from the end of your life, is a tremendous way to gain inner peace in a very rational, methodical way. Life and death are two sides of the same coin. By coming to terms with death, the inner peace you find will be priceless. Lisa Jones is an author, speaker, Maui IANDS co-leader, and podcaster. Peace Booms Amidst Noise By Gayle Barklie Sitting in a parking lot between appointments on an important business call, a lowrider car careened in with boombox blaring. Instant annoyance; my unswerving inner peace peeved. What an insecure, attention-starved jerk, I thought, indignantly. His serendipitous timing offering impeccable inspiration for this article, didn’t slip my awareness. Noticing this out-of-character judgmentalness, I hastily adjusted my irritation level by thinking, Wow, he’s probably just terrified to be acting so over-the-top flamboyantly! Peace returned by shifting to compassion. A few years ago, that wouldn’t have occurred. Likely I would’ve yelled some colorful *expletives* out the window, perhaps flipping him off. Nowadays, calm is my normal. How did I get here? Not by faking it or suppressing emotions. Peacefulness arrived by practicing what I preach. Buttons that generated upsetting emotions, negativity or judgments, became opportunities to unlock personal issues. Disturbing situations were explored as accurate mirrors of leftover denial. My inner-discovery shovel was always poised. Mr. Boombox (loudly) exposed my own lingering insecurities, my own need for attention, and – dare I admit – my own ‘jerkiness.’ He reminded me of my own fears, my own over-the-top behavior – sometimes neatly concealed. Incredibly, his disruptiveness prompted memories from long-forgotten past lives where I’d done annoying things to others. Of course, I don’t do any of these things as noisily as Mr. B., but apparently I needed deafening wake-up booms to really ‘hear’ myself. As he barreled off, I thanked him energetically for his perfectly timed encounter, this gift of self-awakening and split-second karmic clean-up. A fleeting present of presence, gained from what could’ve been perceived as very justified irritation.
