Removing Your Splinters

By John Gelert, LMT Here are some ways to find inner peace and be happier: Spend some time alone – you are good enough by yourself. Focus on your breath – this calms your body and helps you to be present. Detach your mind from the past you can’t change and the future you can’t predict. Meditate. Meditation helps you cope with life and boosts empathy. Do mirror work. Say to yourself, “I love and approve of myself exactly as I am. I love you. I am loved.” Let go of the past. Accept the feeling of what someone did, and forgive them. Practice compassion – this opens your heart to be more positive and peaceful. Accept people for who they are without judgment. Don’t try to change people. Make no assumptions. Ask questions to avoid misunderstandings. Do good deeds to help someone – your kindness will be returned. Be assertive. You need to be in control of your life. There’s no need to please people. Solve a problem to release its underlying stress. Stop procrastinating. Focus on what you can control. Don’t get distracted and don’t try to do too much. Do fewer unimportant things, and set a time limit on them. Declutter. Organize your home and life to bring clarity to your mind. Develop a sense of humor – this produces calming hormones that feel good and heal the body. Eat healthy foods – these can increase focus and help you feel good about yourself. Exercise regularly. Exercise feels good, and is good for the body and the brain. Disconnect from technology for long periods of time. Spend time in nature. Walking in nature helps you feel more relaxed, peaceful and inspired. Do something relaxing that you enjoy. Enjoy a hobby, music, swimming, yoga, etc. Have a massage. Doing these things helps achieve a balanced lifestyle and keeps your sanity intact. John Gelert owns Lomi Hanamana Deep Tissue Massage Therapy in Kihei. By Taryn Kama Sometimes small business clients ask me if they should use Twitter as part of their on-line marketing strategy. Usually, they are comfortable using Facebook and see the value of social media marketing. My answer is somewhat complicated, but here are the highlights. According to twitter.com, Twitter is a social media platform that allows you to: “Follow everything from breaking news and entertainment to sports, politics, and everyday interests. Then, join the conversation.” Your post or ‘tweet’ must be 140 characters or less. Besides that, it functions much like Facebook. You post a photo and/or text and link back to a webpage, resource, article or video. Twitter uses ‘hashtags,’ meaning that when you post something with a “#” in front of it, that hashtag connects all those tweets. So when you want to know specific information, you just have to type in a hashtag in the search box. For instance, if there was a fire on Maui and you wanted the latest news, you could type in “#Mauifire” and all the posts would come up. The other nice thing about Twitter is that many influencers such as reporters and politicians use it, and you can message them directly. For instance, you could direct message Oprah Winfrey by using her handle (@Oprah). In deciding whether to use Twitter, you may want to consider who is using it. According to Omnicore, a digital marketing agency, there are 69 million U.S. users; roughly 46 percent are on daily and 36 percent are 18 to 29 years old. Seventy-four percent say they use Twitter to get their news, and 85 percent of small and medium business users use it to provide customer service. By Erin Elster, DC Have you ever whiplashed your neck? Have you ever hit your head or suffered a concussion? Have you engaged in any high impact sports such as surfing, soccer, football or gymnastics? Have you taken any falls? Do you spend a lot of time working at a computer or slumped over a desk? If so, you may have sustained a misalignment of your head upon your neck; and without knowing it, you may have been living with, and compensating for, this misalignment for years! Each person’s head weighs ten pounds and is designed to sit precisely upon the center axis of the spine in order to distribute weight properly. If, due to trauma, the head is misaligned off of its center axis, it will sit ‘crooked’ upon the neck. Then the spine will compensate underneath and will twist, bend and torque in order to cope with the uneven weight distribution above. Symptoms of head / neck misalignment may include pain in the neck and back, TMJ dysfunction, headaches, dizziness, pinched nerves, numbness and tingling, muscle spasm, low energy, depressed mood, spinal curvature, and abnormal posture — to name a few. In order to determine whether you have sustained a head / neck misalignment, you can undergo an evaluation with a chiropractor specializing in the upper cervical (neck) spine. This rare specialty, known as upper cervical care, utilizes two diagnostic tools – thermal imaging and digital x-rays – to accurately assess your alignment. Each patient’s injured neck is corrected by administering a precise adjustment by hand on a specially-designed knee chest table. Many patients notice improvement in symptoms with just a few treatments. With over 20 years of experience as a specialist in the upper cervical spine, upper cervical chiropractor Dr. Erin Elster, D.C. has maintained a practice on Maui for the past six years. For more information or to schedule an appointment, please contact Dr. Elster in Kahului at 808.866.6551 or visit www.erinelster.com. By Banu Sekendur When I connect with people’s energy, I can feel sometimes that something deep holds them back. A part of their soul is hiding behind a tree, wondering if it will ever be safe to come out to express its greatness. That wound, which is dissolvable by love, clogs up the flow of joy and abundance that wants to come into their lives. I call these blocks splinters. They are very much like the ones you might get on your toe and would limit how fast and how far you can walk. It could feel like a two-inch needle, but it is not. Your emotional body does not know that, however. The healing happens as the splinter is removed and the painful perception is replaced with a more loving one. I have found that the first step to healing is awareness. We don’t call the doctor unless we acknowledge our knee pain. We don’t reach out for help unless the pain has gotten to be too much to handle. So there is a gift in that. That awareness leads to acceptance and a shift within. The wisdom we gain through it all is the icing on the cake of self-love that we will now have more energy to decorate. What really stands between your desired next step and where you are now? Are you ready to trade that in so that you can easily find your authentic path to joy again? It is possible. You just have to say yes. You deserve to shine your own light on the world. Reach out for help. Free your soul. You don’t have to do it alone. Banu Sekendur, MA is an intuitive coach and a healer. After a neardeath break-up in 2013, she was launched into her role as a coach.
