Do you remember what Matt Taibbi wrote about Goldman Sachs? He said, “It is a great vampire squid wrapped around the face of humanity, relentlessly jamming its blood funnel into anything that smells like money.” This is a great metaphor for understanding the influence of power players in Hawaii, the industry leaders who prime our politicians before wrapping the squid tentacles around their minds. Do you want to know what happened to our GMO moratorium bill? You need only look at the vampire squid tentacles wrapped around our county and state leaders. Monsanto and Dow are supersized tentacles wrapped around national politicians and federal agencies like the EPA. Smaller squids work the state and county legislatures. But does that include federal judges? Why, of course. Monsanto alone has two former attorneys on the Supreme Court. Looking at court decisions in Hawaii over the past two years, clearly the industry lobbyists have made sure their point of view is clearly understood in court corridors. As for the actual and potential harm to the environment and the public, well that’s much less clear to the judges. For an overview of the influence of chemical companies on the Environmental Protection Agency, read Poison Spring by E. G. Vallianatos and McKay Jenkins. It tells the secret history of pollution and of that agency by a 25-year EPA veteran and award-winning journalist. It details

collusion between the agency and the chemical industry, a corrupting force of “blinding greed and unfathomable stupidity behind unconscionable lies and travesties – assaults against the very fabric of life.” Read it and weep. When you’ve dried your tears, take action to protect our island community. A short history of pollution in Hawaii would start with sugar companies, early adopters of chemical inputs. Back then, thinking was shallow and short-term – i t d i d th e job, production was up, ‘life is good.’ Over the past 20 years, more people have complained about cane smoke, but only a few have complained about the atrazine and ametryne used in planting, or the aerial spraying of glyphosate (Roundup) prior to harvesting. Then, 40 years ago, traditional seed companies like Pioneer and DeKalb came to take advantage of year-round growing. Few people noticed when chemical companies quietly bought out the old seed growers and began testing genetic crops. Despite a few early warning signals, we took little notice until GMO Free Maui set off alarm bells. It was last year’s SHAKA Movement, however, that dropped depth charges on the Maui squid. Hundreds of petitioners gathered 19,000plus signatures to put a GMO moratorium initia-

You remember the marches and rallies and the door-to-door campaign because you were there, fighting to overcome the multi-million dollar, but ultimately ineffective, campaign against the “Maui Farming Ban.” Victory was sweet. We won, right? Wrong! What happened? The short answer is that the squid smothered it, tried to shove it down the memory hole so you’d forget it. Right off the County refused to certify the vote that would implement the law. Ten days after the election, Monsanto/Dow attorneys filed a motion in Honolulu asking a Federal Judge to invalidate the law. They brought their case to U.S. Magistrate Judge Barry Kurren, who had twice ruled against similar bills passed on Kauai and Hawaii island. SHAKA Movement attorneys filed in state court, asking the State to require Maui County to implement the law. Hawaii has a unique constitutional provision, the Public Trust Doctrine, that mandates public resources be preserved for future generations. In short order, the industry was able to pull the case out of state court. Then our attorneys had to file in federal court to intervene in the Monsanto/Dow case. Our motion to intervene was approved by Judge Kurren, who then assigned the entire case to the Chief Judge for the District of Hawaii, Judge Susan Oki Mollway. While our attorneys were fighting to get the case remanded back to state court, the votesquelching squid was slithering around the corridors of power in Honolulu, getting their minions to draft “Right to Farm” bills that would kill our ordinance. March 10th was to be our big day in court. But late on March 9th, Judge Mollway canceled that hearing, pushing it back until March 31st. Her

Name-Changer Confesses A Little Embarrassment
By Amorah St. John I always felt a little embarrassed when I’d tell my straight-laced family in Chicago the names of my California and Maui friends: Adorah, Satyen, Aquarius, Sareya, Saha and Shakti. To this day, my family still calls me Jan, after 10 years as Amorah (which is really okay with me). For a long time, I could not understand why anyone with an easy-to-pronounce name like Steve would change it to Shuma. My friend, Mark, changed his last name to Montaine because he loves mountains and that’s the French translation. His partner, Shima, got her name during a Hopi Indian ceremony, after growing up as Judy. Free changed his name from Bob so he could always say “I am Free.” Eventually, I discovered the hidden value of being a namechanger. It began when I was living in Santa Monica and working with a band of evolutionary pioneers. I changed my name from Jan Flegel to Jan St. John. I actually made it legal to the tune of $110 at the county courthouse. That was in 1991, before name-changing became as commonplace as it is now. On one level, our birth names automatically connect us to our past, which many people choose to put behind them. They don’t fit our evolving personas or reflect our expanding spirits. As my insightful friend, Aurora (formerly Austin, and before that, Debbie), says, “that was then.” Name-changing gives permission to ourselves and others to be seen in a new way. It underscores a kind of rebirth, a new way of being in the world. The great spiritual master Osho has initiated thousands of seekers with new Sanskrit names to help them drop past ideas of who they think they are. Even kids are getting into name-changing. I know several tunedin children who self-selected a first name that they felt suited them better. At age 8, Victoria became Zoe. Shy little Susie is now Suze, with a brand new swing to her girlish gait. When I changed my last name to St. John, I was surprised by how good I felt about myself with this new name. I experienced an internal shift that made me more confident and approachable. When the curious asked, I explained that John was my dad’s name and Jonathan is my son’s name, helping to reconnect me to my ‘roots.’ Smiling, my daughter asked me if I thought I had become a saint. Of course, I gave her a hearty “Yes!” Amorah came into being when, together with my four dearest friends in California, we declared ourselves ‘The Light Sisters.’ We all chose names that began with an ‘A’ and ended in ‘ah’ (the breath of God). Our spirit names have stayed with us all. If all the world is a stage, then the name-changing game is a fun and transformational form of make-believe. Now that I’m living in paradise, Amorah is more in keeping with my free-flowing life. This name change inspired me to write a children’s book entitled The Adventures of the Light Sisters, introducing the characters as members of one global family. In all of this name-changing, I do have a personal favorite. It’s Jammy, coined by my granddaughter in Nashville. Thanks, Emma. The meaning of Emma’s name, from the German, is whole or universal. Now that’s a name to live into. Amorah St. John is a happy name-changer who loves to write screenplays. Her current project, Star Crossed on Maui, is a love story set against the backdrop of the GMO controversy. She just booked her first ONO (One Night Only) at the Iao Theater on May 11th.

Transforming Chaos And Pain To Humor
By Liah Howard Life can deal some harsh blows that knock us off our feet, but it is what we do with the punches that makes the difference in whether we stay knocked down or stand up. Someone once said, “Humor is tragedy plus time.” It sounds a bit callous, but when I think of the ‘bad’ things that have happened to me, I can now laugh. The change didn’t happen overnight. A combination of time, plus letting go of the old story, and being willing to tell a new one from a different perspective, were the keys to seeing the humor. I remember one instance in particular that demonstrates this point vividly. It was a Friday night over 20 years ago in Novato, California. I was recently divorced and had worked all week teaching school in addition to single parenting my four young children. The kids and I had been in grueling traffic for three hours through San Francisco and over the Golden Gate Bridge. We were all hungry and tired, so we stopped and parked my station wagon in front of a family restaurant. My oldest daughter, eager to eat, jumped out of the car and accidentally slammed the car door on her brother’s hand. In addition, the handle inside was broken and his hand was stuck! He was screaming in pain. I instinctively unbuckled and lunged out of the car to help. However, before I could assist, I found myself tangled up in the seatbelt as the car started backing up across the lot. I had mistakenly put the car in reverse instead of park. My body was dangling out of the door with my arm and back being dragged
by the massive car across the pavement. I finally jerked free from the seatbelt and fell onto the pavement, only to have the back tire and then the front tire of the heavy car run directly over me. As I was writhing in pain, I helplessly watched my runaway car with my beloved children careen across the parking lot and smash into a parked car on the other side of the lot. Chaos ensued! All four children were hysterical, and my car and the other car were smashed. I was injured and could not walk from the pain. Firefighters from next door dashed over to help when they heard the screams and the crash. The

owner of the other car appeared from the restaurant as well as a few curious customers. It was one of the most humiliating and horrible nights of my life. Imagine my embarrassment when I went to the hospital and had to tell them I ran myself over with my own car. Luckily, my son’s hand was okay! Now I look back at that intense experience and smile because it’s so ludicrous that it’s silly. My kids are all grown and every now and then we all laugh at that crazy night. Author Therese J. Activating The Soul’s Purpose By William Meader “We are such stuff as stars are made of.” Spiritual alchemy is the process of raising the vibration of matter and alchemizing it beyond the frequency of gold, to the frequency of light. The Essential Oil Solution
By Lavenda Schaff It had been seven days. This particular morning, though, the pain was so severe that I could not even move. The pain felt like a sharp knife. I wondered if I would need a hip replacement. Putting weight on my leg made me want to scream out loud. I had not been able to work for a week. Because I am self-employed, no money was coming in. I worried that I probably would need to see a doctor, and that health insurance would not cover hip replacement. I had dealt with a sore hip for a while, but this was unbearable. Transmuting A Life Of Tragedy To Treasure By Eric T. Richter Many of us in Maui’s community know Dr. DreamingBear Baraka Kanaan as a beloved cosmic poet, musician and author whose performance artistry has transported us to higher visions for ourselves and our universe. What we may not know are the details of his tumultuous past. He has truly transformed his life of tragedy to treasure! He explains, “I am descended from a Cherokee mother and a Palestinian father, born in Broken Bow, Oklahoma. By the time I was an adolescent, I had already borne witness to the death of my little brother, the kidnapping of my sister; and subsequently living a reservation/refugee camp lifestyle, first in the poverty-stricken indigenous Cherokee lands, then in the war zone of southern Lebanon. I experienced the brutality of bullets, bomb raids, and the present day apartheid/humanitarian crisis of Palestinian displacement first-hand, along with my extended family. It was through all of this adversity that the voice of poetry, or what the Druids call the cauldron of poesy, first emerged within me. “Luckily, through immersion in nature and native traditions, I determined early on that rather than be a statistic to tragedy, I would turn the darkness into light as it were by transmuting my tears into tender verse; and hopefully show the world in the process that we go through the worst to become our best.” His name comes from an auspicious dream his truant-runaway teenaged mother had while she was pregnant in juvenile detention. She had been asked to consider abortion. He says, “She slept on it and had a dream in which a golden bear made of honey, laying under a weeping willow tree, came
to her and said, ‘You’re going to have a son, he will bring much beauty into this world; do not kill this child.’ Upon waking she called her mother WhiteFeather, and after hearing the dream she said, ‘his name is DreamingBear.’ I’m here now because of a mother’s dream and a grandmother’s wisdom.” His grandmother WhiteFeather became the one voice of love and kindness in his world. “When everyone else was against me and it seemed like I had lost every reason to live, she would hold me in her ever-loving arms and say, ‘You were born for a

reason baby, and don’t you ever give up, because granny loves and believes in you!’” Overcoming many obstacles, he became ordained at 18 and traveled the world (42 countries) doing humanitarian aid missions. After earning his master’s degree, at 26 he became an associate professor at Cal State Long Beach. At 33 he made Maui home and started the Lovevolution Foundation charity. Along the way, he’s written 10 books and produced as many albums. He obtained his Ph.D. in 2012. What motivates him? He answers, “Passion. Early on I was motivated by the loss of my siblings and the harshness of my childhood, but with the determination that I would live enough life to make up for the ones that they had lost.” What’s next? He has plans to create the Butterfly Sanctuary, Hawaii’s first preserve for endangered native species of Hawaiian butterfly, which will help to repopulate them back into the wild. There is a movie in the works; and Mauitopia, the TV show where he focuses on the most activated people, places and phenomena in paradise, is his way of “giving back to the community and the Hawaiian culture.” He says, “I want to show people that each one of us has something uniquely special to offer, and that like stars, our job is to shine together. Succulent Sleep
By Maribeth Theisen How do you feel when you hear the word sleep? Do you smile warmly as you imagine nestling into your nurturing bed? Or do you experience angst at the possibility of tossing and turning? If you have bedtime worries, chances are you have created rules: I have to be asleep by 10 p.m., I have to take a melatonin, I have to get 8 hours. If you are anxious about turning in, it’s because you have been wound-up throughout the day. Your nervous system stays in overdrive, accelerated by an active mind. Little value or attention is given to the body or to relaxation. The expectation: race around, be productive, and shift into slumber upon command. The result: thoughts race and the body fidgets all through the night. The body doesn’t like being told what to do. It wants to be attended to and experienced. Sleep doesn’t come on command. It prefers a kind and nurturing invitation. In fact, developing a loving relationship with your body and with sleep will make days and nights pleasurable. To enjoy better sleep, take quiet moments throughout the day to focus on the body, the present moment, or the senses. What do you see, hear, feel? As you go about your day, stay attuned to your body’s responses to your environment, tasks, and the people you interact with. Observe it calmly. Diaphragmatic breathing relaxes the fight or flight response of your sympathetic nervous system and invites the pleasant, calming effects of the parasympathetic nervous system. Take time to transition into sleep. A couple hours before you turn in, disengage from Internet, paying bills, and serious conversations. Spend 10 minutes writing down your feelings from the day. What angered or scared you? Don’t censor it. Writing your thoughts helps you offload them. When you’re finished, tear the page into pieces and throw it away. This unloads the mind and tells the subconscious to let it go. Then engage in activities that give you peace: soft music, candles, essential oils, or listening to recordings of the ocean or gentle rain.

Cultivating Intuitive Intelligence By Paul O’Brien The subtitle of my new book, Great Decisions, Perfect Timing, is “Cultivating Intuitive Intelligence.” Accessing intuitive intelligence is the central component of the Visionary Decision Making process: after all, intuition stimulates the impetus to make a decisive move, do nothing at all, or run like hell. Its signal may take the form of a “gut feeling” or a “feeling in your bones,” based on perception associated with the right brain. Humans have a “triune brain” that consists of the brain stem, the limbic brain, and the neocortex with its right and left hemispheres. Logical problem-solving derives from the left hemisphere, and intuition is a function of the right hemisphere. The two hemispheres are physically identical, but their contents are quite different. In the book Incognito: The Secret Lives of the Brain, neurobiologist Dr. Roger Sperry notes the two hemispheres are, “two separate realms of conscious awareness; two sensing, perceiving, thinking and remembering systems.” The physical structure of our brain can make it difficult to receive signals from the intuition. The barrage of all the sensory stimuli can be so overwhelming that we don’t perceive (or we misinterpret) the subtle signals from our intuition. We rely on wireless signals in our smartphones, tablets, and laptops; it has become an indispensable technology. Yet few of us are aware of a delicate wireless connection between the right hemisphere of our brain and what I call the “Infinite Intelligence” – a realm of knowledge that Jung termed “the collective unconscious.” Our intuition is that sixth sense by which we can access this reservoir of knowledge, storing impressions and images in the right brain’s memory. We need the left hemisphere to
translate the information that this wireless connection reveals into the form of thoughts, words, and ideas. Our logical, problem-solving brain contains the tools needed to understand intuitive sensations and allows us to formulate a decision to make a move. But, as I mentioned above, all of the sensory “noise” we deal with every day makes it challenging to access our intuitive intelligence. In addition, fear and strong emotions can greatly interfere with the receptivity of our delicate wireless antenna. One type of image particularly that helps the left side of the brain make sense of nonverbal impressions is an archetype. For example, one way for the logical mind to translate an intuitive message would be by an archetype showing up in your dreams. An example would be your inner King or Queen appearing in a dream to help you make an important decision that has been pressing upon you. A recurring dream with your inner Sovereign lets you know that a particular situation requires some decisive action. Intuitive intelligence allows you to identify the risks in life that will grow you. Then, with a modicum of courage, you can commit to them by taking brave action. You will learn from all these risks, even if your ego should later label an outcome a “failure.” But before you have all your good options, you need to: a) clear a pathway for signals that can be picked up by your intuitive antenna, and b) execute a decision with good timing. Different Tales ~ Same Treasure!

Scarlett Lewis. A Rwandan genocide survivor. A stage 4 cancer medical miracle. A mother of a murdered son. I had the opportunity to hear these three women speak recently at Wayne Dyer’s “I Am Light” conference. Over two days, Dr. Dyer told extraordinary stories of his own and inspired attendees, but it was his guest speakers who shared their tales of tragedy, loss and forgiveness that silenced the audience and left us somewhat dumbfounded. Immaculee hid in a bathroom with seven women for ninety-one days while most of her family and a million people of the Tutsi tribe were killed. Anita was in the hospital with end stage cancer, entered a coma for three days, and re-emerged from it mostly healed from her terminal disease. Scarlett’s son was one of twenty children murdered at Sandy Hook Elementary School. In each case, from a very dark place of hatred, violence and illness came light. Anger, indifference and revenge would seem likely and perhaps even reasonable responses given what these women endured. However, they chose to feel and act in ways contrary to what many people would expect. Each discovered through her own experience that forgiveness and compassion helped ease her pain and anguish. Each found a way to heal. How does one find these things in the midst of tremendous suffering, fear, loss and grief? How does one keep the faith that something ‘good’ will arise from something ‘bad’? Moving Into Rapture!

Resolve Conflicts, Release Trauma By Douglas Price, D.C. Whenever a traumatic event occurs in our lives, it happens to us for a reason. You may have heard that there is no such thing as an accident or a tragedy; however, it does happen and there will be victims from these events. The higher the intensity of the shock, the greater the lessons we have to learn. Life can feel especially challenging when, for example, we are faced with an unexpected financial downturn, or wrongly accused of something we had no knowledge of, or faced with the sudden loss of a loved one, or rejected in favor of someone else. These unanticipated traumatic events can catch us completely off guard and hit the core of our being like a bolt of lightning. They get recorded in our psyche. These unanticipated traumatic events are then stored in our nervous system, mediated by the brain in two phases. If these conflicts are not resolved in either phase, it will limit the amount of growth and opportunity on both the spiritual and physical levels. In the cold (stress) phase, we may unconsciously interpret these events as though we were looking through tinted glasses; we may find ourselves in ‘flight or fight’ mode. The same holds true in the hot (healing or reparation) phase, where we are in an exaggerated ‘eat and sleep’ mode, missing important details we may overlook. The body and mind are not separate. We can decipher hidden messages as we learn to open ourselves up and become aware of the symptoms that relate to specific inner organs or tissues. Craniosacral Healing
By Lucia Maya For over a decade I have seen beautiful and profound results from incorporating biodynamic craniosacral work into my energy healing practice. As it works with the ‘fluid tides’ of the body, I have seen even greater benefits with this work here on Maui, where the ocean and rhythm of the tides are so woven into our lives. Craniosacral work is based on the idea that our body has its own innate fluid movement or wave, experienced as a ‘breath,’ distinct from our exchange of air. This subtle and powerful form of energy work typically focuses on the bones of the skull, spine and sacrum, along with the brain, central nervous system and the cerebrospinal fluid. I begin each session by placing my hands gently on my client’s head, as my hands ‘listen’ to the body. There is no pressure, only a subtle touch, bringing the craniosacral system back into balance. This technique works for people of all ages, including babies who have had difficult births and may be dealing with earaches or colic. When we are supported to drop into that deep place of sacred stillness, our body can find its way back to itself. It remembers how to heal and how to return to physical and energetic alignment. The natural rhythm and ‘breath’ of our cerebrospinal fluid comes back into balance, and energetic congestion is more easily released. This helps to relieve stress, and can resolve both physical and emotional pain. Most people experience this work as deeply relaxing. excuse was that the Right to Farm bills introduced into the legislature might make her ruling pointless. Had she checked, she would have learned those bills were already ‘deferred,’ or in other words, dead. On March 10th, however, this judge did ask both attorneys for plaintiffs (Monsanto/Dow) and SHAKA to submit briefs about what ‘irreparable harm’ it would cause either the industry or the people/environment of Maui County if she delayed until the end of the legislative session. These briefs can be found at the SHAKA legal defense site. Along with a succinct summary of the main health and environmental concerns, the presentation included very moving testimony by mothers living close to Monsanto’s field operations. A short paragraph avers: “At stake is ongoing damage to the environment, potentially serious health problems associated with continuing practices, threats to Native Hawaiian culture and practices, and the integrity of our own election process. These interests are significantly concrete and cannot be remedied by money damages. They are significantly greater than the corporate profits that the Industry relies on to justify the injunction. These harms are, for all intents and purposes, irreparable and imminent.” Arguments were submitted to court on March 13th. On March 19th, Judge Mollway issued her decision and order. SHAKA’s request for an evidentiary hearing to demonstrate ‘irreparable harm’ was denied. She concluded that such harm would, instead, occur to the industry, as “plaintiffs would be barred from any new planting of GE crops...” Even a cursory reading of her decision reveals that the judge is anything but impartial. Only by understanding the reach and depth of corporate power can you understand why a Federal Judge can ignore state voting laws, the Public Trust Doctrine, serious health concerns and environmental issues, on the possibility that laws might be passed that would settle the matter before early May when the Hawaii legislative session ends. Perhaps the judge is aware that industry attorneys have amendments prepared that their Hawaii state legislative lackeys will tack on to a must-pass budget (or similar) bill in the next month or so. In that case, she won’t have to rule. The squid never sleeps. What Gifts Has Pain Given You? By Jenny Grace Shaw “You must do what you think you cannot.” – Eleanor Roosevelt Those words dance in my head, sometimes gently and sometimes arguing with the other voices calling me worthless, useless, and a failure. I am no virgin to the idea of self-critic, but it sure would be nice if all of those voices quieted for good. Wait a minute. Do I really want them to quiet? Could I truly imagine life without those voices searching out perfection, striving for more, manipulating me to hit every piece of ground running? What would my day look like with only warm, positive, embracing voices? Would I still strive for goals, challenge myself, search out continued education, take risks, make small and large life changes? The truth is, we need all of our voices, do we not? If I did not hear the one who pushes me or tries to protect me, although unhealthily, how would I even recognize praise, comfort, peace, joy and true love? Some of our darkest hours bring equally bright rays of hope and sunshine. We humans simply get impatient about time and we want answers. When will the pain pass? What will I learn from this? And of course the big one, Why me? Pain is an intense emotion, as is anger, shame, fear, and even joy. They are the very definition of living the authentic life. If you want the critic to
lose power over your worth, embrace it first. Instead of running away or hiding from the pain, look it directly in the eye, smile wide, open your heart, open your arms and embrace it just as it is. It is then that pain becomes a part of your next step forward in confidence, esteem and empowerment. It is this pain that actually plants the seed for more love, if you remain open. Refuse to look for happiness in people, places or things. Refuse to run from pain disguised as risks or life changes or break-ups. Every piece of you is the wonderfully collaborated total birthed from all of your emotions, all of your experiences, and all of your growth. There is no need to be afraid of pain. When you stay present with it, it will pass. When active, it is similar to our natural probiotics – stirring up our digestive system, cleansing, and then replacing it with wholesome goodness. The only action we must take when pain arrives is to observe, embrace, ask for support, pray for patience, and remain loyal to the gift yet to be revealed. You are worth the effort! Posture Affects Wellbeing
By Elizabeth Crow The human body is intended to stand upright, bear the load of its own weight, and rely on joints that function at right angles. From the front view: The head is centered over level shoulders. The shoulders sit directly over level hips. The hips are firmly planted over symmetrical knees. The knees and ankles are aligned with feet pointed forward. When the weight-bearing joints deviate from the 90-degree angle, the body has to compensate in the form of postural deviations. From the side view: A plumb line from above drops down just behind the ear, then continues down in line with the shoulder joint, hip joint, knee joint, and the front 1/3 of the ankle joint. How and why does this play a key role in health and wellbeing? Well, posture affects the entire body, not just the bones and muscles. Think about the space your lungs need and how an upright position helps you take more expansive breaths. The rest of the body’s systems are the same. Our internal organs need proper space and relationship to gravity to function properly. The nervous system requires its pathways to be fully available and unobstructed. The cardiovascular, lymphatic and digestive/elimination systems are similarly optimized by the proper musculoskeletal function that good posture brings. The body is an amazingly symbiotic and intricate system. Since it is the vehicle for our life experience, it is well worth considering postural restoration as an integral means by which to maintain it. Whiplash And Migraine Treatment
By Erin Elster, D.C. A new treatment focusing on cervical (neck) injuries, known as upper cervical chiropractic care, shows promise for patients with chronic migraine, cluster and tension headaches. According to a study published in the Journal of Vertebral Subluxation Research (JVSR), 101 patients with chronic headaches were evaluated for misalignments in their upper neck vertebrae. In all subjects, cervical misalignments were discovered and then treated. In 85 cases, chronic headaches ceased. Twelve cases experienced fewer and less severe headaches. The upper cervical area of the spine refers to the two vertebrae located at the top of the spine, directly underneath the head. C1 (known as Atlas) along with C2 (known as Axis) are chiefly responsible for the rotation and flexibility of the head and neck. During an auto or sports accident, an individual’s head may be jerked back and forth or side to side beyond its normal limits, an injury commonly referred to as ‘whiplash.’ Because migraine is a brain disorder that has been frequently linked to whiplash, it was theorized that correction of trauma-induced upper cervical injury may positively impact migraine. Of the 101 patients in the JVSR study, 87 recalled at least one traumatic event prior to his or her headache onset. The most common traumas included whiplash and/or concussion sustained as a result of falls, motor vehicle accidents and sports. Upper cervical chiropractic care utilizes two diagnostic tools – thermal imaging and digital x-rays – to accurately assess a cervical injury. After determining a diagnosis of cervical injury, each patient’s injured neck is corrected by administering a precise adjustment by hand on a specially-designed knee chest table. The relationship between head trauma, migraine onset, and upper cervical treatment provides hope for headache sufferers. By Judy Levy I heard Dr. Wayne say that in Chinese, the same character that means crisis, also means opportunity. I have seen how true this is, time and again. I have enough awareness now to realize quickly that when an “upset” occurs in my world, I will soon receive the lesson / the blessing, and see the opportunity. I am in the midst of a “family crisis.” The uncomfortable part is that I have to take full responsibility for my part of this conflict. Last year, my sister was kind and generous to assist me in launching my new store in a corporate center by offering some much appreciated business support. I am eternally grateful. However, in my excitement over the new location, I did not stop to discuss boundaries and agreements about what “our new business relationship” meant to each of us. This was a big mistake, as it has caused estrangement between us. Hindsight is 20/20, of course. Being a seasoned businesswoman, I now realize I might have suggested a mature and simple process for us to discuss and agree upon what level of involvement her support would look like. The consequence has been that my sister regrets having gotten involved, and I feel dejected but still hopeful. On the upside, this year I have stepped more into my personal power to become a better administrator. We can always turn crisis into an opportunity. I plan to write my third letter to my sister asking for forgiveness and reconciliation. I will invite her and her sweetheart to come visit. I hope we can create a new healthy relationship and celebrate our success!

Depending on how emotionally healthy and evolved we are, each of us carries within our bodies, beliefs and stories, the history of our family lineage. Even if you no longer communicate with your family or live near them, you are continually under the influence of the situations and questions that were left incomplete and unanswered by your parents and ancestors. For many families, there have been significant tragedies, losses and betrayals that have never been fully felt to completion. These are systemic traumas or incomplete wounds that are passed down through the generations, continuing to have an influence on your life however subtle or significant. Each moment is offering you the opportunity to be the leading edge of growth for all who have come before you. You are continuing to carry the things that previous generations have left unfinished, and your children will carry forth from where you are. Your willingness to be present with and bring conscious awareness to all aspects of your life is the key to your personal and spiritual evolution. Anything that you resist or dislike about yourself, your partner or a family member, is an invitation for love, acceptance and healing. Becoming conscious of what you resist and how you react is a vehicle for transformation that can propel you through the limiting beliefs and behaviors into greater freedom. Any unfinished business in your life will continue to recycle until you transform the energy with the power of your love and presence. If you get stuck, sometimes working with a counselor or coach can illuminate the situation in ways that you would not see on your own, which supports resolution and healing.
The Grace Of Healing
By Jashana Kippert One of the greatest joys of my life has been witnessing hundreds of people take the journey from trauma to treasure. As facilitator at the Findhorn Foundation in Scotland, I learned the truly miraculous healing power of community. For many of us raised in a culture that favors individualism, it is hard to imagine anything but complication from groups. We have no concept that our wholeness depends upon our inclusion in the tribe, because we were taught the exact opposite. We value competition and achievement, not knowing we sacrificed the simple savoring of our own unique essence. Years of therapy can be erased when we unexpectedly find our needs for acceptance and belonging being met effortlessly in a group. We come to understand that like a good orchestra, each instrument is treasured for its unique contribution to the whole; skinny flutes, fat cellos, everyone is needed! We allow ourselves the beauty of our collective symphony and we stop struggling to be the solo artist. We can relax into ourselves. A few years ago I found the Sufis Hawaii at their weeklong retreat of meditation, yoga, kirtan, sweat lodge, and group harmonizing through song and dance. I was spellbound by how powerfully the grace of that community moved; opening hearts, healing tender places, and empowering people. All in one week! On Maui, we have many opportunities to discover the exponential growth that can happen in groups. Of course, not all will be harmonious, but even through conflict we learn many lessons about ourselves through our projections and communication styles. During Tragedy, Ask For Love
By Rich Ralston Why do traumatic things happen to us? I do not take pleasure in tragedy, but I understand it as one side of the yin and yang of life. I believe our souls have come to earth to experience all things possible. Our souls are divinely connected with the source of life, or the Prime Creator. Each one of our incarnations allows us to experience both good and evil. Without the bad we cannot appreciate the good. I don’t think we can ever be emotionally prepared for tragic events in our lives. I was certainly not prepared emotionally to experience the death of my mother and father. I now know that this was a part of my life’s experience that has helped me understand other people’s grief. I help people release the emotion of tragedy and balance their energy. Regardless of how much energy I release, it is still important for the person to go through a grieving process to release these emotions. Because our souls are divinely connected with the Prime Creator, we just need to ask for more in times of need. This energy of love is impartial and it is available to everyone. It is the very energy that gives us life. Unconditional love from the Prime Creator is constantly given to us. When I experience a tragedy in my life, I try to open my heart to receive the additional love available from the Prime Creator. Many times it is expressed through the loving care of angels. Finding My Path: Trauma To Triumph By Terri Huber When my marriage ended suddenly, I found myself with no funds, embroiled in a nasty divorce, and then badly hurt in a horrendous car accident while a student at UNLV. The injuries I sustained made it necessary to withdraw from my university program. Anger, anxiety, depression, fear, insomnia, physical pain, and post-traumatic stress were my constant companions. Being alone and witnessing my life implode was terrifying. I felt like I was careening toward the edge of a dark, bottomless pit with no way out. Pure fear trumped all emotions and catapulted me to find a solution to my grim circumstances. As I began to listen to my own innate wisdom, my heart told me to rekindle joy. Joy seemed a long way from where I was at the time, so I asked myself two questions. When was I the happiest in my life? What have I always dreamed of doing? I remembered playing with my dad; the laughter, giggles and tickles brought me joy. I tapped into my body’s visceral memory of happiness, found a Laughter Yoga training and enrolled. At the training I learned that the brain does not know the difference between fake laughter and real laughter, so the body receives all the wonderful physiological benefits either way. Facilitating one-hour laughter sessions produced endorphins, which calmed my nervous system and reduced my body pain. I felt glorious and grateful. Another delight I remembered as a young child was dancing on my dad’s toes. I also recalled being starry-eyed over the movie scene of Cinderella dancing with the Prince. I decided to whole-heartedly embrace my desire to learn ballroom dance. I enrolled in private lessons and experienced body movement and brain retraining in a fun and new way. I felt revitalized as I twirled around the floor with my instructor. A dream come true!

As I took action toward my healing, more opportunities came my way. I started participating in a weekly guided meditation just blocks from my home. I listened to my inner GPS and joined mindfulness sessions offered through the counseling department at UNLV. All of these practices were preparing me for my next high hurdle. The court hearing for my divorce was fast approaching and I did not have the financial means to hire a lawyer. All of my assets were tied up in the divorce. Once again, overwhelming fear became my daily diet. I appealed to various agencies for a pro bono attorney, but was denied. I courageously resolved to represent myself in court, determined to be released from an unhealthy marriage, and to protect my financial future. Thankfully, I had discovered that daylong workshops on divorce law were offered in my area, so I prepared myself to the best of my ability. I don’t recommend self-representation in court, but I felt this was my best recourse considering my situation. My perseverance paid off. I bravely defended myself in the divorce, and walked away with my freedom as well as an adequate amount of assets to create a new life. I made wise investments, consciously changed my career to become a certified life mastery consultant, and followed my heart and intuition to live on Maui. Now I guide people to ignite their own authentic joy. Step by intentional step, I transformed my circumstances from trauma to triumph. The 9th Annual Butterfly Effect Maui will be held Saturday, April 25, 2015. The non-competitive aloha paddle for women in water sports will start at Baldwin Beach at 9:00 a.m. and end at Kanaha. According to founder and organizer Tatiana Howard, the mission is to empower and inspire women in sports, and also come together as a group to support local charities. The program is designed to give participants the confidence to achieve a goal in a supportive group setting. Reconciling And Healing The War Inside Of Me By Helga Fiederer Nowadays it is called PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder). When I grew up this name did not exist, and the pain my parents, relatives and their friends carried was ‘normal.’ I remember visiting a boy from my school at his house and noticing that it felt peaceful and sane there, whereas my own home felt like a war zone. Both of my parents had been WWII refugees as children; they had seen their beloveds executed and driven away to Siberia or local concentration camps. They were decent, hardworking people with a painful past, and they didn’t allow for love anymore, or for God. The focus was on survival. They had lost everything – their land, their people, their hopes and dreams. They had lost themselves. When I was a child, their feelings were my feelings. At age 5, I had a visionary dream, which I interpreted to mean that I must help my younger brothers thrive. I did what I could to make their lives happier. My mother’s threshold for violence was low and I often stepped in between her and the little ones. I realized in my teens that it was up to me to create peace, so I started to meditate and practice yoga. Eventually, a local naturopath offered to train me in reflexology; in exchange I worked on his low-income patients. I became aware of how easily some people can heal with a simple treatment of the body. I wanted to learn how to heal myself and others. The year was 1975; I was 16 years old. Growing up in a PTSD family is an experi-
ence on the brink of insanity, at all times. To separate oneself from this as a child is impossible; to get a grasp of it as an adult is imperative. Last year, at the age of 81, my mother told me for the first time in her life how all of her love had died inside of her. She saw herself as a 12-year-old girl again, surrounded by soldiers who ordered the family to get up on the wagon. Her grandmother refused twice. She was lifted onto the wagon a third time
and when she jumped down, she shouted, “This is where I belong, I was born on this land and only God will take me away!” Then there was the sound of guns and she fell to the ground. As my mother fell silent, I mentioned that I knew this woman very well from my dreams. I had also come to appreciate her courage. She was somebody who stood up to an intolerable situation. She spoke her truth, she was ready to die for it; she was a heroine, with a message for her family: Do not give up, continue on! With these words my mother’s heart burst open and out came, for the first time ever, a flood of fierce love, a wild and powerful force straight from nature, one that protects her children at all cost. We both silently cried into our phones, 12,000 miles away from each other. At the end of WWII, 12-14 million Germans who had lived outside of Germany for 7-10 generations became refugees under the biggest resettlement attempt in human history. Over 200,000 Germans were tortured and killed in the makeshift concentration camps of the Balkan countries, in retaliation for cruelties committed by Hitler’s armies. Millions more died from fire-bombings, starvation and exposure. The war continues on in their children and grandchildren until healing can happen.
