A Green New Deal For Maui

By Mark Sheehan “This land is your land and this land is my land, sure, but the world is run by those that never listen to music anyway.” - Bob Dylan

Right you are, Bob. Maybe they are listening to happy news from Wall Street and reports from their boat brokers about their next yachts. Meanwhile, ocean levels are rising, fires are raging on three continents, and immigrants are fleeing droughts, famines and wars. There are now thousands of youth and environmental groups working together to build a new future. Greta Thunberg said it succinctly: “We can’t buy and build our way out of problems caused by buying and building.” We need leaders who will lead or step aside. Industrial farming of lands and oceans has polluted our fields and exhausted the sea’s bounty that evolved over billions of years. The chemicalbased ‘green revolution’ reliance on fertilizers and pesticides to get us through the 20th century left this century with a colossal cleanup. The solutions are beneath our feet and regenerative agriculture offers multiple ways of solving our problems. We can pay for it with the Green New Deal espoused by Congressional Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (AOC) and a wave of new political leaders from Washington to Wailuku. A brilliant argument is made in Ronnie Cummins’s new book, Grassroots Rising. A longtime social activist and head of the Organic Consumers Association, Cummins’s short book provides extensive reasons and plans for how regenerative agriculture can solve the climate crisis, rebuild small farms and rural towns, while saving the planet. Maui permaculture designer Jenny Pell

explains that regenerative agriculture “is a system of farming principles and practices that increases biodiversity, enriches soils, improves watersheds, protects reefs, provides for pollinators, and enhances ecosystem services. It captures carbon in soil and biomass and is a globally recognized keystone solution to reverse climate change. It also increases yields, reduces external input costs (such as chemicals and fertilizers), is increasingly more resilient to climate instability, and creates higher health and vitality for farming communities.” Carbon sequestration is absolutely critical for our survival because even after we stop burning fossil fuels, we still have to take some 250 billion tons of carbon out of the atmosphere. Organic farming and ranching, along with planting a trillion trees, will restore public health, revitalize millions of small farms and rural communities, and put carbon back in the soil where it belongs. Ram Dass thought that we are having a 1960s-like revival of consciousness and compassion. If so, we need to let our leaders in on the secret because currently, the state legislature gives the Department of Agriculture less than one half of one percent of the state budget. Maui County is even stingier, allocating a measly quarter of one percent! Seems our leaders shop at Safeway. Cummins has contempt for the ‘billionaire

degenerators’ and their factory farming, GMOs and chemical-intensive farming, but is encouraged by the growing corps of youth, women, indigenous communities, consumers and farmers who are connecting the dots and getting organized. There is a worldwide movement to build healthy food systems even as big ag is consolidating control. It’s important that we understand and fight against ‘foodopoly’ by linking up to the expanding network of organic farmers and climate activists who have plans for restoring forests, pastures, woodlands and timberlands across the country. The Green New Deal that AOC proposed has sparked a new wave of activists who are demanding an end to perpetual wars and a commitment to fighting income inequality by rebuilding America from the ground up. This movement has inspired a hope that is contagious and open to all. Maui County has to consider if conventional farming at large scale and regenerative agriculture can live side by side. How can you sustain using biocides prone to drift with building healthy soils for healthy plants? How can we protect our keiki and the ‘aina from sprays along roads and in our parks? We must choose wisely. Learn more about the benefits of this positive system at RegenAG.org or SoilFoodWeb.com. Take a farmer to lunch. Go to the next meeting of Hops and Crops at Rock & Brews in April. Talk to your state representatives and council members about food security and why we need to grow more food on our home islands. Visit HAPI or Hokunui farms. Grow a climate victory garden. Mark Sheehan is a partner in the HAPI organic farm, an environmental activist and real estate broker. Email: mark@marksheehan.com

Ram Dass’ Legacy

This edition is dedicated to Ram Dass, legendary consciousness pioneer, spiritual teacher, author and humanitarian, who recently passed on after living many years on Maui. For those of us old enough to remember the 1960s, it was an era with a huge “generation gap.” Many Baby Boomers became hippies, rejected the establishment, grew their hair long, took drugs, and lived by the motto, “Turn On, Tune In, Drop Out.” At the forefront were professors Timothy Leary and Richard Alpert (Ram Dass), whose experiments with LSD got them kicked out of Harvard. Drug-induced altered states of consciousness shattered youths’ perceptions of spacetime reality. This movement eventually morphed into a mostly drug-free spiritual revolution. Meditation, yoga and conscious perceptions espoused by Ram Dass’ trail-blazing 1971 book, Be Here Now, became the norm. At the end, being present and compassionate were the key. Ram Dass’ last teachings were to remind each of us: “I Am Loving Awareness.” Indeed, all we need is Love. Mahalo, Ram Dass! - Eric T. Richter, publisher

It Is Possible!

By Marsha Wald I was raised in a society and by a family that told me I am limitless! Everything is possible. I just need to show up. Therefore, I became a dreamer and a doer at a very early age. My homeland, like Maui, is in the middle of a huge body of water. Yet, it never occurred to me that I had limitations. Fast forward to my homeland Maui. For the last ten years I have continued my life dreaming and doing – until just recently. I began to notice a word penetrating my mind – one that was obsolete from my vocabulary. It was popping up everywhere and spilling out of the mouths of individuals who were considered high achievers or successful by human standards. That word was “impossible.” It was gaining momentum and attracting friends such as “small island” and “not enough.” Something inside me ignited. Because I knew if this word continued to grow and accumulate more “friends,” it would be hard to recover. I set out to be the “possible” and, like me, so can you! We all are super heroes because we all have done something someone else has never done! And that is called “possible.” On this small island a lot of “possibles” have happened – whether by the hand of man or by miracles. We had a President who made history come from this land. According to historical data, Hawaii had electricity before other parts of the United States. We have athletes, scholars, healers and world changers – to name a few – from this land. The next time you think of “impossible,” look in the mirror. Just by being alive today you are “possible” in action! Marsha Wald is the founder of Art of Living Maui. She has a passion to help people achieve their best by offering workshops and tools that are practical and applicable, such as feng shui, life strategies coaching, Reiki and numerology. Shamanic Drum Journeys

By Lalénya L. Vann Shamanic drum journeys are also known as “waking dreams” and “traveling with a drum.” One relaxes into the repetitive percussion beat of a drum or rattle, and lets the sound carry them on a journey to other realities, other worlds and other dimensions. One can have experiences like night dreams, while being awake! To begin, participants are given a guided meditation for their journey – a ‘map’ to get started. As the drumming starts, one may pass through a veil or go down a long dark tunnel; then come out in a magical garden, perhaps near a pool, or in a wooded glen. Then, one just stays relaxed, letting the drum carry them as they explore and enjoy the experience! When the drum sounds the “recall,” one returns to this reality. It’s safe, healing, and may provide a direct revelation of what one longs to know. Some people have extraordinary experiences the first time, and others need to practice to relax, let go, open up and enjoy the journey. In some recent drum journey evenings with others, several people met their animal spirit totems. One man swam with whales, while another woman visited her deceased grandmother. One can travel in time, heal past soul traumas, meet loved ones who have passed over, experience spontaneous healing, and have insightful and wonderful adventures! The name “Shaman” comes from the Tungus tribe in Siberia. Their Shamans called their drums their “horses,” and traveled on them to other realities to bring back healing and soul recovery for their tribe members. Today, individuals can travel with a drum to receive direct guidance for healing, forgiveness, soul recovery, and creative inspiration for themselves and others. Lalénya L. Vann is a certified instructor with the Robert Moss School of Active Dreaming. For information on upcoming classes in dream interpretation, a shamanic drum journey, or a private session of either or both, visit www.ActiveDreamingMaui.com or call 808.757.8761.

Taking Courage To Be Real By Susan Wilesmith It takes courage to be real and authentic, to own our mistakes and to say we are a work in progress, to acknowledge we give and forgive and we also hurt each other through our unhealed patterns and programming. It takes courage to face our dark shadows and to face another person to say I’m sorry, as this unveils the ego. It takes courage to forgive someone when we are hurting. We all are in this together. We are not better than anyone else. To hold space for someone’s mistakes and to forgive is to bring unconditional light to the dark and to realize they are both inside all of us. It just shows up in different ways for each person. Doing the work isn’t easy; it’s intense. To say you don’t have a shadow side is to say you don’t have a light side. Love and Light are present in all of us on this journey, no matter what karma is showing up for you to dissolve and transform. Having the courage to show up in connection with another means both karmas are going to be revealed. It can be sweet, sour, bitter, astringent and pungent. However, nobody gets to judge. On a universal scale of the unmanifest, there is no right or wrong. Everything just is. If you judge something in someone, it only amplifies it in your own reality at some point. On a physical level, choose what your body needs to heal. Your nervous system is the slowest system to heal. The nervous system needs nourishment on all levels. In Ayurvedic medicine we heal the nervous system through the skin, which is the largest sense organ of the body. At AlohaVeda Spa we use warm oil massages and many other Ayurvedic treatments. Life does not have to be viewed as drama only, as a dance between the dark and the light. You are going to hurt, cry and feel pain, but these open you up to a grace that is so beautiful. The more it happens, the quicker the recovery each time. The relationship back to self is the ultimate journey. From there we share the gifts of giving, forgiveness and love. From here we live in absolute harmony. Live life on the edge; it’s worth it. Have the courage to love whatever arises as we all are perfect in our imperfectness. In unconditional Love to all of us who walk this planet, may we find it in our hearts to give unconditionally and also forgive unconditionally. This is the ultimate freedom and liberation. Susan Wilesmith offers treatments at AlohaVeda Spa, 42 Baldwin Avenue, Maui. Treatments include shirodhara (ancient Ayurveda treatment that includes abhyanga, a warm oil massage). Panchakarma retreats (detox cleanse over a number of consecutive days) can be organized individually. These powerful treatments purify deeper layers of consciousness. Try Some Self-Compassion For A Change By Paul O’Brien Those of us who pay attention to the spiritual dimensions of life know about compassion, one of the most important forms of lovingkindness. Validating modern psychotherapy’s latest findings, the Dalai Lama reminds us that compassion can positively re-wire the mind. Simply put, compassion is feeling and expressing loving-kindness for people going through troubles or suffering. Obviously, there’s certainly no shortage of suffering in the world to feel compassion for. In fact, all types of suffering – physical and psychological – seem to be multiplying right before our eyes, not only in impoverished societies, but including a growing dispossessed homeless population everywhere you look. Indeed, according to Buddhist logic, we will all suffer – even the rich and comfortable – because suffering is built in to the ego’s strategy of ever pursuing pleasure and avoiding pain. The very fear of suffering begets extra anxiety – even more suffering, as we criticize ourselves for being anxious to begin with! We often shame ourselves as if there’s something wrong with us when we don’t understand or can’t cope with feelings. We don’t have to suffer the crippling effects of anxiety, however. There are healthy ways to cope with stress and anxiety, instead of engaging in self-criticism and negative judgments or the abuse of addictive substances and behaviors, which only leaves us feeling empty and worse off. Self-compassion is the royal path of the heart. It is the art of directing a loving, forgiving energy towards yourself, with new per-

spectives on your old dissatisfactions, perceived failures, and frustrations. It is soothing and helpful during times of stress to focus your conscious mind on personal images of kindness, understanding, and love, in order to cultivate those feelings within yourself. Find some sacred images that appeal to you and move your soul. Print them out and post them around your space. You will train your mind to combat anxiety-causing thoughts and emotions with the powerful presence of love and acceptance. You will become happier. Self-compassion is coming to the forefront of psychotherapy, as per an excellent book by Dr. Dennis Tirch called The Compassionate-Mind Guide to Overcoming Anxiety: Using Compassion-Focused Therapy to Calm Worry, Panic, and Fear. Dr. Tirch writes about how treating ourselves with compassion has a huge impact on the quality of our lives and our ability to deal with inner difficulties, such as anxiety, fear, shame and depression. In his book, Dr. Tirch writes, “Compassion begins with a deep understanding of just how tricky our brains are and a recognition that they are not that well put together! Once we recognize how difficult our emotions can be, we can stand back from them and feel compassion for the difficulties we experience.” As we learn how to not take life’s challenges so personally, and to forgive ourselves for our imperfections by cultivating self-compassion, the uncomfortable effects of anxiety will diminish in our lives. According to Dr. Tirch, “If you’re able to tolerate your anxiety-related distress and accept that anxiety is a part of life, then you’ll also be able to work with it and around it – in short, you’ll be better able to function in your life.” Just reading Dr. Tirch’s book and interviewing him for my Pathways podcast helped me enormously. (Now please excuse me while I take a deep breath and give myself a hug! :-) ) Paul O’Brien is author of Intuitive Intelligence: Make Life-Changing Decisions with Perfect Timing and the Visionary I Ching Oracle app. He is host of Pathways Radio/podcast archived on Divination.com.

While we are endowed with physical faculties to experience the sense worlds in and around us, likewise, we also have an innate ability to imperience consciousness directly within our own blood and being. Hints For Spring Cleansing

By Sara Schroepfer It is the time to emerge from the winter cave of self-reflection and embrace the season of spring. Spring bestows upon us gifts of increased energy, renewal and rebirth. Spring is a cleansing time with increased activity, enhanced creativity, and new growth. A time of new beginnings, it calls us to forgive old grievances, let go resentments, and increase gratitude. Spring cleaning begins with one’s inner home: the bodymind, the emotional body and the energetic. Cleansing our physical body sheds toxins that may have built up from the previous season. A simple juice cleanse, or drinking ginger, lemon, honey and cayenne tea, can suffice. A clean body brings clarity of mind and purpose into one’s life. A forgiveness exercise helps to cleanse emotions. Write down anyone who harmed you this past season and their main characteristics you dislike. Then flip and own your projection. If this person is controlling, consider when you have tried to control others. If they are passive-aggressive, think about when you have been indirect in your communications. With this new awareness, shift these tendencies within yourself so that you can offer forgiveness to all involved. Cleansing at the energetic level, we find the beauty of the season of renewal. When we cleanse internally, then we are able to clean our physical house and closets, recycling old items that have lost their meaning or purpose to us so that someone else can utilize them. Saging our environments can be the final act of clearing out old feelings, resentments or energies that no longer serve us. If you are looking for space clearing tips, check out my blog post, “The End of An Era,” at saraschroepfer.com. Enjoy this time by embracing and harnessing the season of growth! Plant your seeds of intention and watch them blossom. Forgive And Take Ownership By Mary-Allana Holmes Some time ago I had an opportunity for Ho’oponopono with a friend who had hurt me when we were traveling together – she took off with new friends and I never saw her again. Things between us were never the same until we took the opportunity some years later to talk it out. I think often we are offended or hurt by people while they are simply being who they are. Whether it’s hurtful words, mean or offensive acts, or even acts of violence, these all come from places of pain, trauma, ignorance, or lack of awareness in individuals. When somebody physically hurts us, we hope eventually we can step back and see the emotional pain or personal issues that caused them to go to that extreme. When someone’s behavior or words are painful, we can feel judgment and emotional response, especially if they trigger one of our ‘buttons.’ Then some reaction based on our past comes forward. These responses often lie hidden until triggered, then cause us to react in anger or fear. The past can weigh us down or lift us up. Where it weighs us down, we have an opportunity to release, to give ourselves more light, to forgive people for their indiscretions, weaknesses, pain or ignorance. So, what does it mean to forgive? It means to finally recognize our own place of reaction, and to take ownership of our responses to people being who they are and acting from their own sets of triggering buttons and issues. It means to recognize our power of free will, and to exercise it by reviewing and choosing our responses. It means to free ourselves from negative frequencies of judgment, and to open an opportunity for more light. Mary-Allana Holmes offers co-creative soul sessions, healing, land and home clearings. She is also a facilitator channel for co-creative projects with individuals and groups. Contact her by phone, 540.449.6221, email cosmicchannels@gmail.com or visit www.CosmicChannels.com.

Tips For Neck Pain Relief

By Addison Bulosan, D.C. Episodes of neck pain are often characterized by certain symptoms – pain and discomfort from the back of the head down to the neck; headaches; jaw pain; difficulty rotating the head; numbness; tingling sensations down the arms; occasional mental fogs; and general muscle fatigue. People living with neck pains are often unable to work, play or thrive in the world. The following tips can help sufferers find neck pain relief: Change your sleeping position. A poor sleeping position is one of the main reasons why people develop neck pain. The ideal sleeping position is sleeping with a pillow or cushion that somewhat raises your head. The goal is to keep the head and neck aligned with the rest of your spine. Take breaks from sitting too long, and set up your work station ergonomically. Take frequent breaks between work periods. Don’t spend long periods of time looking down at electronic gadgets. Whenever you have to work on your computer, ensure that the screen is directly above your eye level. Always opt for standing or kneeling desks, and answer calls with your headset. Hydrate. Water is a great natural lubricant. The nerves and muscles that join our necks to our bodies need to be constantly lubricated for improved flexibility. Use Ice. Massage the back of your neck and shoulders with an ice pack for ten minutes at a time. This will help decrease inflammation. Get specific chiropractic care. Visit an upper cervical chiropractor who will assess your upper spine to determine and address the underlying cause of your neck pain. Where necessary, the specific chiropractor will correct misalignments in the cervical vertebrae. For the past six years, Dr. Addison Bulosan has provided excellent chiropractic care for sufferers of neck pain and other kinds of chronic pains. For more information, contact him at 808.866.6551. He is located at 296 Alamaha St #C3A, Kahului. Please email maui@thespecific.com and visit https://maui.thespecific.com .

Becoming A Stronger Empath

Giving And Forgiving

By April Curry An empath is a person who feels and absorbs other people’s emotions and/or physical symptoms because of their highly intuitive system. Being an empath is challenging at times. It can be difficult to discern what is your energy versus someone else’s. Being an empath is not a curse; it is a form of intelligence that needs to be supported and developed. If you are an empath, here are four things you can do right now to become a stronger empath. 1) Clear! Meditation, yoga, being in nature, and exercise are all forms of clearing. These exercises help flush an empath’s system to help them gain peace of mind and find balance. 2) Energetic management. Make a conscious effort to use clearing, and simultaneously go into the world to see how much input you can handle before you lose your center. It is not a perfect road. Every empath has their own threshold. 3) Acceptance. Embrace that you are an empath. Tell your friends and family about your empathic needs. True friends and loved ones are generally supportive and want to see you grow. Most intellectually intelligent people have specific accommodations for their balance and growth. Being intuitively intelligent isn’t any different. 4) Confidence. The stronger energy always wins. If you remain confident and clear throughout the day, it is harder for other energies to enter your system. Do not try to block other people’s energies. The best approach is to learn to contract your energy and stand strong. Be direct in how you are and what you feel. Do not second guess yourself. April Curry, owner of Maui Reiki Healing, is a certified Reiki Master. April uses her intuitive guidance to help guide her through each Reiki session. For more information, call her at 808.633.6556 or visit www.mauireikihealing.com.

By Barbara Ensign, CHt. When you think about the word giving, what comes to mind? It could be the act of giving someone a gift, or giving someone your time, or sharing your talents or treasures. It’s about allowing the energy of giving to flow through you. It might be giving unused items away to someone who can use them. Giving could be about giving up old ways of thinking or behaviors that no longer serve you. By giving up, we make space for the new that wants to emerge. What about giving thanks? That is, being grateful for everything and everyone in our lives. And let’s not forget about taking time to give to yourself. How would you treat yourself if you loved yourself completely? If you feel stuck in any of these areas, it could be blocking the flow of life for you. With the help of hypnosis you can tap into the subconscious mind in a safe environment to clear the blocks and create the life you were meant to live. Are you holding on to any resentments toward someone? Are you having difficulty forgiving anyone for any hurts or wrongdoing? Often we resist forgiving someone because we think doing so will “let them off the hook.” Forgiveness does not condone what the other person did; it allows you to “let it go” so you can be free. How about forgiving yourself for any hurts or pain you might have caused someone else? If you have the willingness to forgive, using hypnosis can make forgiveness possible. You might feel a deep sense of peace as you release and feel that new energy of life flow into the space you have created. Barbara Ensign is a certified hypnotherapist specializing in past life and life between lives spiritual regression. She has been serving Maui for over 18 years. Examining Feelings About Death By Lisa Jones It is interesting to see how people respond when a famous person suddenly dies. Think back to what your reaction was when you heard about the deaths of Lady Diana, Prince, Whitney Houston, Robin Williams, JFK, Jr., or most recently Kobe Bryant. Were you upset? Were you sad or angry? Did you have a mild, medium or extreme reaction? Regardless of what your reaction was, it was perfect. Whatever came up for you was exactly what you needed to feel in order to process your thoughts and feelings about death within your life. This is where giving and forgiving comes in. When you do have grief to process, give yourself the time to fully embrace your feelings and allow there to be space for you to process, mourn and forgive yourself. Blaming ourselves is a natural reaction anytime someone close to us dies — we might think about what we could have done, what we feel we should have done, or what we did do. I learned this firsthand with the death of my 44-year-old husband, the death of my mother from a stroke, and the sudden loss of my father from surgery. In each one of these deaths, I had a premonition that they would die. I didn’t tell because it felt too uncomfortable to discuss with them. Instead, I’ve had to deal with my remorse, which I’ve done by becoming a hospice volunteer and starting a podcast Exploring Death. It’s been very therapeutic. I highly encourage you to embrace your fear around death and start having these meaningful and enlightening conversations with your friends and family, so that when death enters your life, you’ll have less apprehension and be better able to support those around you. Lisa Jones is an author, speaker, and Hospice Maui volunteer. She hosts the podcast Exploring Death. Visit MillionaireMedium.com or email Lisa@ExploringDeath.com.

Triple Dog Dare!

By Jonathan Yudis I triple dog dare you to forgive yourself right now. Yes, it’s that important. For those unaware of this slang term, it’s used to denote the highest of a series of compounding levels of dare ‘seriousness.’ Almost everyone has experienced pain and trauma in their life, or at some point felt wronged, betrayed or wounded. Unfortunately, the act of forgiveness has become deeply misunderstood both within our culture and within ourselves. Perhaps the most powerful thing we can choose to do in any given moment, including right now, is simply to forgive ourselves (or another) from the depths of our heart. We often think and have been taught that forgiveness is about another, when in truth it is all about ourselves and our own living experience. To forgive is literally to stop feeling angry or resentful toward someone for an offense, flaw or mistake. When such offenses occur in our lives, whether we recognize it or not, we create and develop stories around those experiences that we then carry around with us until true forgiveness occurs. If such offenses are a wound, these stories equate to continuously scratching off the scab of these wounds on a regular basis throughout our lives. To forgive ourselves is to stop this cycle of re-injury such that a true healing can take place. The key components of this process involve: 1) acknowledge the wound, trauma or offense that has not yet been forgiven; 2) recognize the story that you are carrying and repeating to yourself about this wrongdoing which you’ve experienced; 3) choose to take full responsibility for the totality of your life, which includes all experiences that have brought you into this present moment; 4) go into the loving space of your heart and allow it to release any story which you’ve been holding onto around this wound or offense, including towards yourself for not being able to let go; and 5) move forward with this new understanding and love you have towards yourself. Ultimately, our power to forgive is our power to love. Jonathan Yudis is the best-selling author of several books, including Love & Oneness (co-authored with Marianne Williamson). He lives with an attitude of gratitude on Maui with his wife and children.

A Gift Of True Self-Forgiveness By Gayle Barklie Clients often ask: “Why dredge up the past?” “Why should I bother remembering past lives?” The life-transforming benefits of inner work are limitless. However, if I had to choose one answer, it would be to receive the immeasurable gift of true self-forgiveness. Getting in touch with important events stored in the subconscious mind – from this life and past lives – releases their disempowering, programmed effects. By integrating the lessons from these experiences, forgiveness happens organically. You’re left feeling completely grateful for the gift of unfolding. Doing this work can profoundly change all aspects of life in amazing ways. Forgiveness isn’t about sanctioning what someone did; rather, viewing it with a higher consciousness perspective. It’s understanding the bigger picture — why something needed to happen. It’s discovering how this event assisted your (or someone else’s) evolution by helping clean up the subconscious past; seeing how it helped you declutter that overflowing pile of karma stuffed in the depths of your inner closet! The good news is, when you finally let go of resentful energy, your life shifts in miraculous, unexpected ways. Frequently, I end therapy sessions by having clients visualize those they want to forgive. I have them envision bubbly, explosive gifts such as a bottle of champagne or confetti. First they gift themselves, then they hand it to their recipients; sparkly energy spreads everywhere. They present this gift back seven generations, as well as forward to future generations. Next, they imagine themselves as the middle of an infinity symbol. They experience being the center source of forgiveness, the gift they’re giving, now until eternity. Trying to forgive and forget is an exercise in futility. Becoming the energy of the forgiveness circle of life is transformational. For-give-ness is your superpower gift for yourself and the world. Gayle Barklie, CCHT, MFC, has offered transpersonal hypnotherapy, past life regression, life between lives, clinical art therapy, equine-assisted psychotherapy, and marriage and family counseling since 1991. By Dr. Douglas J. Price, D.C. When someone errs, we must remember that on a higher level all humans are divine. We all are ultimately innocent, as difficult as that may be to accept sometimes. There is a huge difference between forgiving and accepting. Forgiveness is about forgiving the action, not the person. When someone finds it difficult to forgive another person’s action, we must inquire about the underlying conflict that makes forgiveness difficult. If the victim mentality is not resolved, then it may be difficult to give forgiveness. It is our nature to give and if a conflict prevents you from giving, then it needs to be resolved. Not everyone’s challenges to forgiveness are the same. We all have different unanticipated dramatic events that pose challenges to being able to forgive. The conflict can be survival of existence, protection, validation, and/or relationship issues. One can delve into the psyche and discover the underlying conflict, as well as what it is about the present opportunity that makes it so challenging to forgive. For example, a woman who has been raped may have more of a challenge to forgive the situation in another person that she is close to. Another example is a financial situation where your family experienced being ripped off in your past. In this case, your recent event may prevent you from coming to terms with it when it happens to you. Ultimately, resolving the conflict allows one to give forgiveness, as well as flow with the divine and live in the now. Dr. Douglas J. Price, D.C. has over 30 years of experience in chiropractic and kinesiology. His approach to healing is revolutionary, encompassing both wellness and resolution. Author of Activate Your Brain To Heal Your Body, he teaches online and travels internationally. Contact: dr.price.gnm@gmail.com, 808.244.0415.

A Forgiving Soul

By Rich Ralston Over the years while I have utilized my gift as a psychic medium, I have had hundreds of conversations with departed souls. One of the facts I have learned from them is that when a person departs from the body, their soul retains the same personality, beliefs and attitudes that they had while they were alive. When people hold grudges against others and take it to the grave, they carry it into their afterlife. This is one reason why it is so important to forgive people of their offenses. Why continue to experience the same unforgiving attitude and create unresolved karma for your next lifetime? It is better to search your heart now while you have the opportunity, and decide to forgive people of their offenses. There is another reason why it’s important to forgive. Have you ever met a person who is holding a grudge against others? How does it make you feel being with them? The energy that they carry affects others around them as well. It is called the “law of resonance.” The energy one creates is transmitted to everyone with whom they come into contact. Negative energies not only affect us emotionally, but they also affect us physically because they create stress on the body. Stress is held in the solar plexus chakra, which is connected to the organs of the body. Why not start this year with a clean slate and forgive all those who have offended you? You will feel better, and so will those around you.

Rich Ralston, clairvoyant energy worker and healer, facilitates past life karma clearing, communication with souls of the dead, chakra clearing and remote healing. Rich was recently interviewed on Lisa Jones’ Exploring Death podcast. Google it and check it out! To get in touch with Rich, email subtleenergy101@gmail.com or call 808.313.2736.

Giving Is Good For Us! By Katharine Stone Ayers “Act of giving something to others is an art of flowering your heart.” - Vinayak “Forgive others, not because they deserve forgiveness, but because you deserve peace.” - Jonathan Huie It’s almost springtime and all around us new green growth is happening. This same blossoming goodness feeds our hearts when we give. Take a minute to remember a time when you enjoyed giving and sense your heart! I remember the pure joy of doing medical research for a friend who needed support, and the warmth in my heart when another friend experienced pleasure from my sharing some freshly baked apple crisp. Research by a well-known Stanford professor, Dr. James Doty, has shown that acts of kindness or compassion put us back into ‘rest mode’ and can have lasting positive impacts on our physical and mental health. Giving is good for our health! In the Organic Intelligence approach, we practice building a reservoir of loving kindness and compassion towards ourselves, which we can then extend towards others in small increments. As we learn to gradually increase our capacity to give to ourselves, we also gradually increase our capacity to give to others. Small acts of kindness or giving can heal our hearts, rewire our brains and nervous systems, and build a reservoir of goodness within. A wise person once told me: “Forgiveness is the acceptance of the past for what it was.” When someone has hurt or wronged us in some way with their words or deeds, we can take a moment to experience how that has affected our heart and well-being. We can extend loving kindness to the part of ourselves that has been wounded or is hurting. By practicing this, we eventually heal our heart and find peace. Ask Ania - Love Advice From Paradise Question: I’m calling in my life partner and it’s heartbreaking to keep encountering “almosts.” I recently ended a relationship with a man I had incredible chemistry with, however we fought terribly. I thought, if we have this kind of chemistry, even if it’s hard at first, even if he wounded me, isn’t it worth looking past it and growing from it to make all our dreams come true? But I ended things because I was feeling emotionally unsafe and unseen, and he was closed to communicating. My questions are: 1. If I’m doing so much inner work on myself, why do I keep attracting the wrong mate? And 2. Is the initial fighting a definite no/no, or could it be a sign of immediate closeness and a huge opportunity for growth? - LR, Marin County, CA Dear LR, I feel a sadness and a fire in me whenever I witness people taken in by the cultural story that love involves struggle, or that passion comes with drama. I highly encourage you to re-imprint your love template and look for examples of High Intimacy and Low Drama relationships. Some of my favorites are my teachers, Joyce & Barry Vissell and Katie & Gay Hendricks, both couples in 30+ year partnerships who are awesome examples of healthy thriving. In cases of high chemistry and lots of fighting, the “closeness” you feel is from being woundmates, not necessarily soulmates. Your childhood wounds are a perfect match and the fighting is a sign that you’re not fully in the present, heart to heart, with your neocortexes online, but firing on some old neural networks and relating from past-pain-filter to past-pain-filter. All couples will do this pain-body relating to some extent, but a healthy relationship

partner who can tap into passion in a healthy way. And Cultivate. The. Heck. Out. Of. That! Because *that* is the voice that will guide you to the relationship of your dreams. Love, Ania

doesn’t normalize it; they redirect toward fruitful communication. I say initial fighting is a deal-breaker. One big lesson on the soulmate path is the idea that you are worthy of a pure and uncomplicated love, you don’t have to work to earn it, you are simply lovable for being yourself. Sounds like you’re getting there. You can’t control who turns you on but you can shape what part of your psyche stays in the driver’s seat on this love journey. Tune into that part of your heart that *knows* you deserve emotional safety as a baseline, and an emotionally mature

Question: Why is it that when I’m with this woman, kissing her and enjoying her company, I really enjoy it and want to continue connecting with her, but when I’m away I feel resistance to seeing her at all and make many excuses not to? - Z, London Dear Z, You describe a classic example of avoidant attachment. I recommend reading the book Attached by Levine & Heller. Your attachment system is wired to feel safer with distance. This can create a frustrating push/pull experience when one aspect of you is saying yes to closeness and another aspect feels more comfortable pulling away. The good news is, this is common and there are many therapists specializing in helping people rewire exactly this mechanism. And I’ve seen clients in my own practice change patterns dramatically in one week just by reading that book, which provides great support for rewiring your own heart. Love, Ania Ania Ananda Wood, MA, M-NLP loves empowering her clients to clear unconscious blocks and create the lives and relationships of their dreams. Learning From Animals:

Tapping Into Your Unlimited Bank Account Of Forgiveness

By Dr. Laurie Moore, LMFT, CHT In our complex world with rapidly shifting social norms for relating, we humans can experience disappointments! Navigating into forgiveness is simple. Let’s be inspired by non-human domestic animals. These sisters and brothers of ours have the capacity to make forgiveness easy because they value love as primary. Cats, dogs, horses, birds, turtles and others will purr, jump, leap, sing or crawl back to peace. Look closely at their caring responses to interpersonal (or inter-animal) challenges. Anthropologists and animal communicators know that animals are infinitely intelligent. It is proven that the intelligence of whales is greater than that of humans. The same is true for many species. Animals choose unconditional forgiveness over lingering emotions and debatable topics. Animals also vibrate unconditional forgiveness simultaneously to a fleeting feeling. Many nonhuman animals allow disharmonic emotions to acquiesce back into harmonies by valuing unconditional love over passing unfortunate situations. Does this sound like your dog? Let’s learn from profoundly caring beings — our animal friends. How do we apply animals’ unconditional forgiveness when let down by another human? 1) Trust The Light (or Master Teacher, Higher Power, or Greater Source) to respond to your desires and needs. Rather than focusing on someone who did not respond as you hoped, believe in The Light to bring what you seek! When tempted to grumble about someone who betrayed, condescended or misunderstood, substitute that with faith in The Light’s capacity to honor wishes. Here is how: State to The Light that you fully trust The Light to bring you _____ (what you wish to experience). Allow the desired experience to come from an unexpected direction, courtesy of The Light. Be patient as timings vary. When your wish comes into manifestation, you will be so enthralled with the joy of this event that what someone else did or didn’t do will no longer matter. Animals consistently focus on what is good. You can, too. 2) Realize that each person is going through a multitude of learnings and is focusing on themselves. Nobody can fit your needs like a puzzle piece. The person that could not fulfill your wish wasn’t designed for that role. They have other matters assigned to them by life. Forgive yourself for imposing something incorrect on that other person. Accept that person is being/doing what is meant for their own personal relationship with The Light. Release into acceptance, which is a kind of forgiveness. We can easily misdirect our desires toward someone who cannot respond in our preferred way. This misdirect is completely forgivable and understandable. Your animal friends love you just as much as always. 3) When someone does break a universally understood value or personal agreement with you, you only have two choices. You can stay in a mode of blame, which will cause you emotional distress and physical discomfort. Or you can free the person who erred and liberate yourself in the process. Animals create joy within by being unconditionally forgiving, even when they are saddened. I invite you to experiment creatively with the suggestions above. Try them out for a month to see what happens. I predict miracles. Having spoken to thousands of humans and animals over past decades, I thank animals for role modeling unconditional forgiveness. Humans who follow in their animal family member’s footsteps reap wonderful benefits. Dr. Laurie Moore, LMFT, CHT is a human and animal telepathic reader and author. She assists people with understanding their animal’s communications. She experiences great joy in helping people to erase financial, career and relational troubles so as to build fulfilling realities. Visit www.animiracles.com and www.animiracles.com/new. Keys To Giving And Forgiving By Heather Solarie To give and forgive is a good recipe for success in any relationship. Giving and forgiving represent generosity of spirit, and the willingness to extend oneself to join with another. They both essentially make an offering that elevates. There are many different forms of giving. It is said a miracle occurs when one person extends in love to another. The Course in Miracles says, “one who temporarily has more (love) extends to one who temporarily has less.” The highest form of giving is unconditional. This type of giving is done primarily for the joy and pleasure of the act itself, above and beyond any practical purpose it may provide for either the giver or receiver. Forgiving is a willingness to let go of a real or imagined wrongdoing. Forgiving only becomes necessary when we experience some kind of change in circumstances or dynamics with others or ourselves that is reductionary and sets us back in some way. The reduction can come physically, mentally and emotionally. We are not always able to repair the physical damage experienced. We are, however, always able to repair the mental and emotional damage. This is where people often get stuck. They may not be willing to find ways to feel better regardless of the circumstances, but they always can. The first step is wanting to feel better regardless of the circumstances. The second step is accepting the circumstances. The third is understanding that we all have the ability to feel better regardless of the circumstances. The fourth is coming into alignment with the thoughts and feelings that provide us with relief and allow us to feel better. If we can keep our focus here for long enough, we will eventually bring ourselves back to the mental and emotional level of life satisfaction we had before the wrongdoing occurred. Heather Solarie, LMT, CCHT, NLPP, offers hypnotherapy, massage therapy, neurolinguistic programming, connected breathing, professional hypnotherapy certification training. Letting The Past Be The Past

By John Gelert, LMT Human interactions can sometimes be unkind and leave emotional scars. How can we forgive ourselves for what we did? Receiving forgiveness can be harder than giving forgiveness, because we may feel unworthy of being pardoned and the offended person may not even forgive us. It is important to humbly focus on our faults without justifying what we did. Hawaiians practice Ho’oponopono to initiate forgiveness by saying: “I am sorry. Please forgive me. Thank you. I love you.” It is necessary to give and receive love to live in the highest vibration. How do we forgive someone who has hurt us? Thoughts and feelings of anger and resentment disempower us. It is essential to forgive others for spiritual growth and peace of mind. We can connect to Spirit to help empower us to overcome these feelings. Take the focus off the offender who caused your distress! Accept your feelings about it without thinking they are wrong. Do not blame or try to understand them. Focus only on understanding yourself! Tell yourself that nobody has the power to cause you distress without your consent, not even the offender. By changing your perception of the power people have over you, you will find it easier to let go of resentments. Take responsibility for the experience so you can take responsibility for learning from it and resolving it. (If you still think they are responsible, then you would need to wait until they change for you, which is unlikely.) Live in the present moment, and let the past be the past! Be more tolerant to opinions that are different from your own. Be kind instead of right. Be an observer and do not judge. Then you will have peace of mind. Meditate on thoughts of love: “I am peaceful, I am content, and I am love.” John Gelert owns Lomi Hanamana Deep Tissue Massage Therapy in Kihei. How Deep Do You Roll? By Julia Carmen Some time ago, I was watching an interview between Rachael Ray and Lin-Manuel Miranda. The Hamilton producer was a guest on the show alongside his family. As he was talking story with Rachael, he said, “We roll deep” — meaning, he has a large family. Whether or not you have a large family, you can find ways to “roll deep.” Just like the honu in this photo, even knowing the odds may be against you! Aligning with the Source of All makes it easier! Here are 10 ideas that will guide you toward “rolling deep”: 1. Take a walk in nature or go outside. 2. Kiss a “baby” (look in the mirror). 3. Sing a song and sing it loud. 4. Give a hug or ask for one. 5. Dance to your favorite song. 6. Laugh out loud or tell someone your favorite joke. 7. Take a nap. 8. Have someone rub your feet or rub your own feet with love. 9. Enjoy your favorite meal. 10. Do your favorite activity. As a good friend of mine, Aunty Mary, said, “If all else fails, come to Hawaii.” She was right on! To align with the Source, say these powerful words to your Self: My True Source of Energy begins with My Peace of Mind. My True Source of Energy begins with My Peace of Heart. My True Source of Energy begins with My Peace of Soul Self. Amen. Repeat these words throughout the day whenever you need a reminder that you do, indeed, roll deep! Julia Carmen was born with a gift of a Curandera de Alma (Seer of the Soul) and has guided clients to quiet themselves to hear their own true divine soul self. Choosing Your Words Wisely

By Maurgana Stiastny For the past year I’ve been studying rapid transformational therapy taught by Marisa Peer, and I’ve been contemplating some of the rules of the mind. One rule is: “Our mind learns by repetition.” Consider parents who label their children as “the smart one,” “the pretty one” or “the athletic one.” Even though it may not feel true, the child may begin to adapt to the label and adopt it as part of their self-image. We are deeply affected by what we are told as children. Until about age 7, we are very suggestible. We absorb the world around us without discretion. Another rule is: “Your mind is going to do exactly what it thinks you want it to do.” If you say, “I don’t want to go to that meeting,” you might wake up with a sore throat so that you don’t have to go to that meeting. How many times have you really needed rest and you caught a cold just so you could rest? Your mind doesn’t care if what you’re saying is good, bad or indifferent; true or false; healthy or unhealthy. It simply acts according to the words you tell it. One step to transform our lives is to realize that how we speak to ourselves is very important. Negative self-talk is a very damaging habit because what you focus on is what you’re going to get more of, and your thoughts form the blueprint that your mind and body work to make your reality. To create a beautiful life for ourselves and those around us, it’s important to choose our words wisely. I’ve appreciated studying and understanding the importance of the words I choose to speak. It’s not an easy task, and it’s something I’m working on. Maurgana Stiastny, LAc, MAcOM, LMT, has been an acupuncturist and natural healthcare practitioner for 29 years, and recently became certified as a Rapid Transformational Therapy™ practitioner. Find her at Maui Vibrant Health located in Paia and Kihei, or call her at 808.579.8810.

I Ask “Who Am I?”

By Gwyn Gorg The question “Who am I” brings up a wide array of concerns for many who have never delved into their particular identity. When the question is posed to some, their definitions of self might relate to daily livelihood, duties and responsibilities to others. The question “Who am I” forces one to consider aspects that might have been buried in order to avoid more honest introspection. For instance: What values are important to me? Am I quiet when negative words or actions are taken against others? Do I participate in that which might be harmful or exploitative of others by purchasing certain products or services? Do I represent kindness, generosity, forgiveness and patience? We can not expect ourselves to be perfect, but we can continuously work to become better as humans. It’s important that we forgive all aspects of our past and present missteps, and make conscious attempts not to repeat the same errors. Once we truthfully honor ourselves in such a manner, then we can forgive others. Becoming a better example in our encounters with others is an integral part of forward movement. Taking personal time, or “me time,” each day is a necessary tool for self-growth, development, self-assessment and relaxation. Fifteen to sixty minutes each day is necessary in order to become more familiar with ourselves and to have a very clear definition of who we are. When we can unequivocally define ourselves, pejorative slurs have minimal or no effect when lodged against us by those who are having less conscious moments. My most recently published book, I Am Bigger Than Nigger, illustrates that when we (regardless of race, religion and ethnicity) can define ourselves to ourselves, the negative phrases from others are diminished. That is when we can truly answer the question, “Who am I?” Gwyn Gorg is a wedding officiant, marriage counselor, private English instructor, author and poet. Authentic Apologies

By Molly Willson What does it mean to be authentically sorry and truly let go of the emotion? At times in our lives, in some of our most vulnerable moments, we are challenged and tested and we react out of impulse. So, we apologize and try to make amends with the one we hurt. We may try to resolve and rationalize our reaction by doing our best to ‘make up’ for what we did. We may seek forgiveness. But despite our efforts to fix the situation, feelings of guilt may still sit heavily in our heart – “Why did I let myself react like that? That is not me; I can’t believe I did that. I’m so mad at myself for overreacting.” We may promise ourselves that it won’t happen again, but sometimes it does. We may find ourselves again repeating the apology and internalizing our guilt, holding on to these emotions within. These emotions get carried in our bodies, and they get stored into our cells. Over time, they build up, get stuck, and become even harder to shake. They become burdens and can manifest as disease and dysfunction. Feelings of guilt and shame linger in our aura. But when we choose to dive inward and authentically apologize to ourselves, these emotions can be released. Through the act of self-forgiveness, we give ourselves the love and compassion needed to let go of the past. In this process of self-reflection we give ourselves the freedom to release suppressed emotions. By practicing self-awareness daily, we give ourselves a chance to recognize suppressed emotions and authentically forgive ourselves for our reactions so that we can live with more peace. Molly is a Maui-based licensed occupational therapist and certified health and nutrition coach who works with people to develop a deeper sense of self-awareness and love through meaningful self-care practices. For more information, email mollywill09@gmail.com or call Molly at 585.230.2904.

Aligning With Our Life Purpose By Richard Bradley The concept of life purpose is prevalent throughout our society, yet the workings of it are not well understood. Just think of the real meaning. It’s the reason for our existence here in this life, at this time, in this family, in this body, with these attributes. It is hugely meaningful with major impact on our well-being and happiness; yet finding and following it is a problem for many. It’s not well known that life has a couple of simple ways of guiding us towards our purpose. Consider this. When we are in alignment with our life purpose, we feel fulfilled, needed and happy. It’s like we are floating on an invisible current. Things manifest effortlessly and synchronicities abound. When we are not in alignment with our life purpose, we feel unfulfilled and unhappy. Problems abound. It feels like we are pushing a boulder up hill. The situation inevitably comes to a head and becomes a crisis, midlife or otherwise. We get into crisis because we are out of alignment with our life purpose. The reason why life brings the crisis is to get us to shift to a path that is more in alignment with our higher purpose. I can testify that every major crisis in my life has led me to examine and change my life in some way that was closer to my life purpose. Life became happier and more fulfilling as a

result. That’s how we know we are moving more in the direction of our purpose. The new direction is more exciting; it is happier and more fulfilling than what we were doing before. We just have to get through our fear of making a change. This is the first way life nudges us toward doing what we came here to do. It makes following our purpose an exciting and fulfilling journey. Life also helps to guide us by the gifts it bestows on us. Everyone is born with a unique gift, and often more than one. These gifts enable some things to be easier for us than for others. Maybe it’s being good at math, or being attractive, or being creative, or being good with your hands. There are as many gifts as there are attributes. These gifts are life’s way of nudging us towards our life purpose. If we move toward the activities and professions that flow out of these gifts, then we’ll be moving toward our life purpose. It’s pretty simple, really. We enjoy doing the things we are good at. This brings its own rewards, and also guides us in the direction of our purpose. You can get an idea of how this works with an example from my life. Life gave me the gift of physical flexibility. This led me, at age 17, to yoga. Hatha yoga was designed by the ancient Rishis as a way to calm the mind in preparation for meditation. You could say that yoga helped lead me to meditation, and from meditation to the study of spirituality and the inner journey. And guess what? My life purpose, at this time in my life, is tied to explaining the intricacies of the inner journey. By following the direction of what excites and fulfills us, along with exploring the gifts that we’ve been given by life, we begin to come into alignment with our purpose — with all of the consequent rewards!

Reopening Your Heart

By Rhonda J. Felix Giving and forgiving are both necessary for healing relationships. I just recently had a very unexpected opportunity to experience this in my own life. My children’s biological father passed away one year ago, in February 2019. The children wanted closure and they set a date to do this on February 4, 2020. I didn’t give this much thought until that very day. Having been trained as a chaplain, I pulled out some information that I thought could be helpful for us all to process this experience. The first thing is to see this person safe in the arms of God. Then we spoke of our hopes and dreams with this person. Our attention then turned to disappointments and difficulties. I didn’t realize that I still had disappointments that we didn’t raise our children together. This was much deeper than I remembered. Then we moved into forgiveness, which is the key to release and closure. Truly, everyone has done the best they could with what they had; otherwise they would have done it better. To hold on to anything else is way too painful for us. It’s probably not as painful for the other person, as they most likely are not invested in our feelings. I gave gratitude for being blessed with three amazing children from this union, and they all are truly a blessing to our world. Ram Dass said this about forgiveness: It is a step on a ladder that goes from dualism into non-dualism. Because as you forgive or allow or acknowledge or say “Of course you’re human” or “We all do that” or something, you open your heart again. Rhonda J. Is Your Business Healthy?

By Taryn Kama It’s a new year and new you! This is a great time to do an “audit” of the health of your small business to make sure you have a strong foundation that is set up to prosper in 2020. After all, when you and your business are healthy, you will bring your community with you! Here are some questions to ask: Basics: Are you in good standing with the Department of Commerce? Is all your paperwork up to date? Online: What does your online presence look like? Can your potential clients find you? Does your website need to be updated? Do you use social media? If so, do you feel good about how you use social media? Goals: What are your goals and strategies for 2020? What tactics will help you reach your goals? For example, if you use social media, which channels (i.e., Facebook, Instagram) will you use? How many postings will you have per week? What will your message be? How do these tactics match your strategy and goals? Clean your house: What has been working for you? What has not been working for you? Get rid of what is not working and do more of what is working. Ultimately, ask yourself, “What inspires me?” Has your business become just about making money? I am guessing that is not what originally inspired you. If that is what it has become, reflect on what inspires you. Seek out opportunities and practices that are inspiring to you. You will be most profitable when you love what you are doing and are paying attention to the “business of business.” You will attract potential clients who would love to work with you! Taryn Kama is a Maui-based media expert and college professor of business. She is the owner of Go Get it Media, a business that provides media services and workshops/education on on-line marketing for heartcentered businesses. Visit www.gogetitmedia.com.

Offering A Natural Solution To PTS

By Shone Edel Post-Traumatic Stress (PTS) is complicated, complex, commonplace and generally misunderstood. Many believe that it is primarily the military who suffer PTS from war; but all of us, to some extent, experience events in our daily living that affect us negatively. Everything we see or hear makes us vulnerable. We are touched when hearing about two young police officers on Oahu killed in the line of duty, or of fires burning on our planet. We are saddened by the death of Kobe Bryant, his 13-year-old daughter and 7 other friends in a tragic helicopter crash. Our hearts go out to families who have experienced great loss. When tragedy happens, we all bleed in some way – often through our tears. How do we deal with this PTS? What are our choices? Can we just forget the mental or physical pain that upsets us by trying not to think about it? Can we heal ourselves by meditating, praying, or turning off the news? Must we turn to medication to relieve physical manifestations such as intestinal problems, migraine headaches, depression and other types of mental illness? Can we hide from ourselves? In my experience, people exhibit dramatic positive transformations with Homeopathic Brainwave Therapy. It balances the brain and helps to remove the reoccurring thoughts that are troubling. I often hear people report a comfortable level of detachment that stops the triggering of old patterns that can haunt them. The memory loses its negative charge around an event. People also report less stress, better sleep, improved memory and focus, greater motivation and inspiration, as well as inner peace and compassion – all delicately unfolding. Shone Edel, BA, NHC has been practicing homeopathy on Maui for over 20 years. Maui Homeopathy has created a line of wellness products available online and in stores across Hawaii. Homeopathic Brainwave Therapy is a ground-breaking treatment with positive results. For more information: 808.248.7568, www.mauihomeopathy.com. Location: 210 Imi Kala Street, Suite S4, Wailuku.

A Change In Course By Shanna Shanti Nowadays, we obtain information about our ancestors through scientific analysis. We send off saliva samples in exchange for insight into our family origins and genetic tendencies. Our blood is rich with history and we are determined to unveil the mysteries of our past. As we dive deep into understanding our DNA, we discover how truly similar every living species is. Our makeup may reflect different patterns, shades and hues, yet we are all endowed with the full spectrum of the rainbow. We project the light of the universe, filtered through our unique soulprint. The colors we emanate are truly a matter of choice. In the face of challenge, we don’t always broadcast from the antenna of our higher consciousness. When the person in the car behind us honks their horn, we want to signal back the finger. Yet if we look closely, we realize the person in the rearview mirror is simply a reflection of ourselves. We have been that person honking our horn. The wheels of karma spin back around and we have the opportunity to set a different course. It takes effort to shift to neutral when we are accustomed to speeding ahead, yet we must slow our reactive habits. If we take time to defog our lens, we notice the other driver is hauling a heavy load just like us. We all drag the weight of our ancestors’ pain in our trunks. Although we can get stuck playing the same ole song on the radio, we can select a more harmonious tune. Every time we hear honking, we can bounce back compassion and help lighten the load of others. After all, we are driving to the same destination. Let’s help each other home. Shanna Shanti is a wellness intuitive specializing in craniosacral therapy and trauma resolution. Simrit Releases New Album When We Return By Lydia Sherwood With the release of their enigmatically titled upcoming album, When We Return, multi-talented, world renowned artist and performer Simrit and her powerhouse band are primed for the next phase of their career, fully engaged once again in sharing their epic cinematic blend of hypnotic grooves and transcendent mystical energies. The eclectic, sonically expansive 7-track collection is a follow-up to her 2017 Billboard Top Ten New Age album Live. It features the Greek-born, South Carolina-raised, Californiabased singer, songwriter and harmonium player, performing her ethereal vocals in English, Gurmukhi (an ancient, poetic language that was used in the state of Punjab in the northwestern corner of India), and a self-created dialect inspired by the ancient Greek language of her birth culture. Simrit’s choice to use Gurmukhi on the hauntingly lilting 8-and-a-half minute opening track “Agunjul,” and the increasingly soundscape rich and Radiohead-style percussive “CCV,” is based on the fact that it’s a scientific language created to expand a person’s consciousness. The name “Agunjul” means “salutations to the cosmos’ infinite energy.” With its exotic funk vibe and dancing cello, “Just a Glance” reflects on the reality that our identities can be shattered with a single look of truth from someone. The hypnotic ballad “It is Written” finds Simrit asking “where is the purity?” as she makes a pointed statement about how by thinking and analyzing too much, we get further away from our inner truth.

Integrating seamlessly with Simrit’s voice and her unique and fresh playing style on the harmonium, each member of her band plays an integral role on When We Return and on tour. The eccentric and unusually unique ensemble includes classically trained and ground breaking cellist Shannon Hayden; Salif Bamakora on kora, a 21-string gourd instrument whose strings are made of fishing line; Jared May on bass and Moog synthesizer; and Devon Ashley on drum kit. With a deeply emotional, purely intuitive and richly textured synthesis of sounds that bridge continents and souls, some have called her epic and cinematic, hypnotically groovin’ yet transcendentally mystical vibe, the musical equivalent of the edgy, enigmatic style of directors David Lynch and Quentin Tarantino. Steven Tyler and Belinda Carlisle are among the wide scope of fans of her music. Simrit says, “With When We Return, the listener will be taken on an adventure....a cosmic journey. The cool thing about it is that it’s psychedelic. We use sound and hypnotic language as ancient but fresh and limitless cosmic transmissions. Like many of the previous works, these songs have all the energies and elements of the world and cosmos that allow you to feel the grounding power of the bass and drums but at the same time be catapulted into space.” Listen to When We Return on Spotify, Apple Music or by download on iTunes, amongst other digital venues. See Simrit perform live with her full band on Maui at 7:00 p.m. on Sunday, March 27 at the MACC’s Castle Theatre. Visit www.mauiarts.org or www.simrit.live for details and tickets.

There is a reason “Awesome feeling! If you’re ever on Maui this is a must do.” - Adrian Kukua for this. The anger that we feel – the hurt inside, the resentment and betrayal – is not actually about other people. We think we are angry at those who have hurt or betrayed us. We think our hurt, frustration and regret is focused externally at those involved. But it is not. That is why focusing forgiveness on others is not a cure-all. The truth is, our upset, anger, betrayal and hurt is not about what others have done to us, but rather what we have done to ourselves. That is where the sting is coming from. The pain we feel is not about other people; it is about what we have allowed into our own life. To allow in experiences where we failed to honor our truth, where we did not put ourselves first, where we believed others more than ourselves, and where we did not listen to our intuition – these are the true causes of our pain. Forgive Your Way To Health

By Maribeth Theisen “It is an immutable spiritual law that when there is a health problem there is a forgiveness problem.” - Catherine Ponder Have you had fantasies of getting even with someone you felt wronged you? Various spiritual traditions consider anger, resentment and judgment toxic emotions that transmit violent energy. Doctors agree. Prevention Magazine states, “It is estimated that 90 percent of all physical problems have psychological roots…virtually every ill that can befall the body…is influenced…by our emotions.” Defending against hurt and fear with anger can give the illusion of strength, but true power comes from choosing to create peace of mind. Mahatma Gandhi said, “The weak can never forgive. Forgiveness is an attribute of the strong.” Forgiveness is not conceding the other person was right or that they are not responsible for their behavior. It is releasing feelings that limit you, making a choice to be free. The other person does not need to be present for you to forgive. Once you choose to forgive, write completion letters. In the first, thoroughly vent your animosity. Burn the letter to symbolize your willingness to forgive. In the second letter, focus on what you are grateful for and positive aspects of the relationship. With newfound clarity, write the third letter — objectively describe what happened and the resulting emotions; include what you learned and the changes you are making in your attitude and behavior. Another tool is Sondra Ray’s “Forgiveness Diet.” For seven days, write this affirmation 70 times daily: “I completely forgive (person’s name) for (behavior).” You can also repeat the process for your own behaviors. Forgiveness makes you feel lighter and freer in your body, mind and spirit. Maribeth Theisen, LCSW, CCHT has assisted others for over 40 years, utilizing EMDR, hypnotherapy, Shamanism and transformative psychotherapy. When off Maui, she provides sessions through phone, video chat and email. Look for her Divine Feminine event in the calendar section. Visit www.MaribethTheisen.com or call 808.269.2923.

Since 2012, Doorway Into Light has offered non-profit, certified green funeral services, support, counsel and education. This includes green burial, ocean body burial, home funerals, and locally crafted caskets and urns. Our storefront, ‘Īpuka/The Death Store in Haiku, has welcomed hundreds of people this past year on our Saturday store days. Our community presentations, workshops and trainings continue to grow as more people are seeking information and support for their eventual dying and death, and more people are looking for ‘green’ options. Our support of individuals and families continues as more of the community becomes aware of our financial and environmental costsavings. This year we’re manifesting a long-time dream of our founding board members, Bodhi Be, Leilah Be and Ram Dass, to create a new model of caring for the dying and the dead on our own land on Maui. We will create an alternative option to Maui’s other funeral homes and cemeteries, which are now owned by large out-of-state corporations. Having transformed the funeral home experience by removing the ‘for-profit motive’ and adding support and counseling services, we will now transform the cemetery experience by creating a healing place that people will want to visit. ‘Īpuka, a Sanctuary Park and Natural Burial Ground, is a sacred story of life and death interweaving in healthy community life, protected and cared for by a non-profit organization in perpetuity. It will be Hawaii’s first certified green cemetery — a beautiful and peaceful resting place for those who have died. It will be a doorway for the living to remembrance, celebration, contemplation, honoring and connection to the preciousness, fragility and enduring nature of life. ‘Īpuka Sanctuary Park will be a place to visit loved ones who have died, including one’s pet. The land will feature a community park, meditation gardens, a pet cemetery, a flower farm and orchard — all within a place held sacred where one can walk quietly (alone or with a friend) and wander in beauty among the orchards and flowers, and all using regenerative and organic practices. It will include a ceremonial hall and a learning center to support caregivers, families and community events. It will be a place to attend classes and events, as well as host community gatherings and ceremonies. ‘Īpuka becomes a new model of land use combining public and private community functions, and will help change our cultural attitudes and relationships to life and death. ‘Īpuka will be an integral and valued place for the Maui community and beyond. In the natural burial ground, a certified green cemetery, flowers, plants and trees can be planted over graves. In contrast to so-called modern cemeteries, there will be no metal caskets, no concrete or plastic grave liners, no imported tropical hardwood caskets, and, most importantly, no toxic embalming fluids. Families can, if they wish, dig the grave, wrap their loved one in a cloth and place him/her in the grave, all of which is not allowed at other cemeteries. In a country setting, where there is land available, this is the method for the lowest carbon footprint in caring for the dead. Cremation, as it currently exists, sends our carbon into the atmosphere along with hydrocarbons and heavy metals from the burning of oil or propane. We’ll build a crematory when we can capture all the carbon from our bodies and return it to the earth where it belongs, and when we can power the cremation process utilizing solar power. The composting of human bodies, which has now been legalized in the State of Washington, may eventually become legal in Hawaii. Open cremation, at this time, will not be allowed in the State of Hawaii. Reverend Bodhi Be directs Doorway Into Light. Check out the full story at www.ipuka.org. Processing Painful Emotions

By Amitabh Amidor In life we all go through painful events caused by interactions with others, such as conflict with friends, betrayal by a loved one, unfair treatment from your boss, to name a few. When someone hurts us, we feel pain. In response to this pain, some people may react with anger, hostility and desire for revenge, while others may feel fear and freeze or dissociate. These intense feelings can overwhelm us, and as a secondary reaction to these overwhelming feelings we can experience shame, self-hatred or self-blame. Self-blame, self-hatred and shame are the result of a conditioned belief (usually originating in childhood) that intense feelings are wrong. But if our feelings are wrong, why do we feel them? When we are hurt, our brain sends out signals to the nervous system that we are under threat; our nervous system responds by activating the fight/flight or freeze responses. The fight/flight response releases certain chemicals and temporarily changes brain function which can result in anger and hostility, while the freeze response can send us into freeze and dissociation. In other words, we feel under attack and we are ready to either fight, run away, or freeze. Somatic Experiencing® is a type of therapy that helps people process painful experiences and the emotions connected to them. By feeling one’s emotions with a trusted practitioner, individuals can move toward accepting their feelings as natural and healthy responses, and forgive themselves for responding in a certain way. Forgiving ourselves opens the door to forgive those who have hurt us. Forgiveness is a medicine that positively affects our body and mind, liberating us from pain and clearing space for living a happier life. Amitabh Amidor is a Somatic Experiencing® practitioner under the Somatic Experiencing® Trauma Institute, the internationally recognized body-oriented approach for treating physical and emotional trauma, founded by Dr. Peter Levine. Amitabh works with individuals and groups. To schedule a session or learn more, contact: 808.740.1528, SomaticTherapyMaui@gmail.com, www.SomaticTherapyMaui.com.

Teaching Gratitude To Kids

By Judy Levy I had a kindergarten class this Valentine’s week. My substitute teacher lesson plans made no mention of making cards for eager moms and dads hopeful for their first ‘school souvenir,’ a handmade Valentine from their munchkins. Not being art adept, I wanted it to be a simple but meaningful project. I began a conversation about all the things our mommies and daddies do for us, and I wrote the children’s ‘thank you’ list on the board. They expressed gratitude for their parents feeding them, washing their clothes, reading to them and, of course, kissing them good night. They practiced first in journals, copying two of the thank yous, before they copied them onto the pink or red card. They drew and cut out hearts and decorated their cards. I felt good that we expanded the commercial ‘love energy’ into the realm of gratitude into their daily realities. Hopefully I made them more aware of how hard their parents work for them. I encouraged them to say thank you more often to their families, to the people serving them their lunches, and to others. Some of the older custodians and I have chatted about being ‘old school.’ We fret because it seems gratefulness and basic good manners are not being sufficiently taught at home these days. We lament the level of ‘civility’ in our society. I also taught them this secret to Life: “The more we say thank you for things we like, the more we get!” Remind the little people in your life how important gratitude is so they can have a happier life! Judy Levy, Maui’s ‘crystal lady,’ found epic new crystal babies at the Tucson Gem Show! Come see them at the monthly Mystic Holistic Wellness Fair & Crystals Sale (March 15 & Earth Day at Kihei VFW) or by private appointment. Judy also offers Judy’s Angelic Crystal Journeys, a unique and uplifting experience. Call 808.269.7762.

The Power Of Chi Kung

By Sheri Brinks There’s no need for sugar or coffee. Doing a 20-minute Chi Kung practice three times weekly can raise one’s energy naturally! Taoism postulates every human being contains three treasures: Jing, the physical body; our thoughts and emotions expressed as Chi-energy; and Shen, the spirit. Wu (emptiness) sources and integrates the three treasures. I have been practicing Chi Kung for over 25 years and find it to be one of the most effective yet gentle ways to benefit oneself physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually. It combines body-posture and movement with breath and meditation. Chi Kung was developed by the White Cloud Taoist Monks in ancient China who brought acupuncture, Chinese herbal medicine, bone-setting, and the yin/yang concept to the world. It is a holistic approach to healing that addresses the origin of health problems, including psychosomatic and emotional responses. Studies show Chi Kung positively impacts chronic illness, helping patients with cancer and breathing problems; it is also beneficial for older adults. Benefits include improved lung function, mood, sleep and quality of life; it also lessens fatigue, stress, anxiety and pain. The Taoist philosophy and practices are the basis of spiritual investigation. The ultimate goal is to become one with the Tao which has been called many things: enlightenment, meeting with the Father in Heaven, reaching nirvana and ultimate understanding. Taoists feel that it is best for one to begin with the energy of the body, and then progress through emotions and thoughts to spiritual cultivation, before going for the ultimate goal. To experience Chi Kung, all one needs is comfortable clothing. I invite you to join us! Sheri Brinks offers Chi Kung on a drop-in basis, by donation, every Saturday morning in Haiku from 9:00 a.m. to 10:15 a.m. Sheri’s upcoming workshops and trainings include “Fusion of the 5 Elements” and “Chi Kung Basics.” For more information, call 310.490.7493. Being Present

By Camille Hetman Being present is the key to experience love and joy in our life. It is a moment-to-moment experience. When we are fully present in any given moment all relationships are affected in a positive way. We feel a deeper connection to everything we are doing and everyone we are with. We experience love. It is our fear about the past and future that distracts us from being fully present. All relationships are affected. Friends feel unheard and dismissed, children feel left out and unloved, partners feel rejected and unappreciated. We feel misunderstood and unfulfilled. Misunderstanding has caused us to create a reality of fear instead of love. Fear has kept us from remembering that love is who we truly are. Fear wears many faces but the end result is that it keeps us at a distance from being present with our self and our many relationships. Fear has created judgment and separation within our self and others. It has created pain and suffering in the world. Love knows us all to be the same. Our purpose on earth is to create, share and enjoy the many expressions of love. We do have a choice in how we experience life and the many relationships within it. First we need to create a relationship with our own self and love. Our loving presence naturally extends to all other relationships we join in. Being present with love brings joy to our self and everyone around us. Without judgment we can see what is true and what is not. We loosen old beliefs and patterns not based on love to create new ones that are. This new relationship with our self and love is created and deepens through our continued practice of being present moment to moment. Where do we begin? Begin with a heartfelt choice to live as love. Love is who we are. It is what joins us as one. It is only our conscious awareness that has been missing. Be mindful of breath and use it to direct you to a space within where you access love’s peace, calm and stillness. Feel this space. Place attention on the pause between each exhale and inhale. As you expand this space you connect deeper to this feeling. Stillness is where the “thinking mind” quiets down. It is where thoughts about the past and future fade. It is the state of presence. In this space you become aware of what is happening in this moment. You are here and now. In essence, your heart is opening to feel and see love in your self and others. You begin taking responsibility for your part in relationships and see that you do have a choice in how to participate. You begin to listen more. Words and actions become more loving and kind. You feel the joy of connection. Love is a powerful choice. Continue placing attention on this choice day and night. Mindful breathing will keep you connected to stillness where love returns to your awareness. Be present with this feeling. When you find yourself distracted from your thinking mind return to breath. Breathe, listen and respond from the state of presence to change the experience of your life moment to moment. Camille Hetman is a practitioner, writer and facilitator of living life from an awakened state of love. She provides tools and guidance to deepen the relationship with the Self in a supportive, nonjudgmental environment. Camille lives on Maui and is available to meet with individuals and groups.
