Maui’s Food Future: The Force Awakens
By Mark Sheehan “The ancient Vedas say, ‘In this handful of soil rests the future of humanity.’ If we care for it we have a future and if we destroy it we destroy our own existence.” – Dr. Vandana Shiva Think back to 10 or 15 years ago. Did you imagine tons of ice melting every second? Or that yearly superstorms would be wreaking havoc on our coasts? Did you envision fracking earthquakes and the Gulf of Mexico as a dead zone? How about the Pacific gyre of trash? Cities where people can’t breathe? Could you foresee Maui County as ground zero for GMO crop testing? Or that we’d pass the SHAKA bill? Did you think we’d get to the Paris climate change agreement? Now think ahead about 15 years. It’s 2031. Are things better? Will our beaches be in the same place? Will there even be beaches? Will airport runways be moved inland? Will Kahului harbor still function? Will 90 percent of our food still be imported? Or, might we be generating most of our own power and growing most of our food? Change comes as a shock to the system, like Alexander and Baldwin (A&B) pulling the plug on sugar. Though the collapse has been expected for years, the final notice startled many and unleashed a wave of media nostalgia for ‘good old plantation days.’ And, after years of loyal work, we expect the company to invest in the future of their employees’ training. Likewise, we understand the relief expressed by families who have suffered asthma and had to rush kids to the ER instead of to school. As part of the Big Five that ruled Hawaii with an iron fist, A&B controlled the legislature as easily as they controlled water delivery to their plantations. Their western/industrial system was used to convert the indigenous managed lands
into a plantation monoculture. Then they dumped untold tons of chemicals on fields from Kauai to Maui. Will the plantation owner shift practices? Can we trust them to restore life to the soil, to convert to real agriculture that will support our families 50 years from now? I think they will need input from all stakeholders who desire a truly sustainable, regenerative agriculture. Such plans are in the works and will soon be made public. In David Montgomery’s classic, Dirt: The Erosion of Civilizations, he writes: “Given that the state of the soil determines what can be grown for how long, preserving the basis for the wealth of future generations requires intergenerational land stewardship.” Good management requires husbanding this ‘natural capital.’ He continues, “Cultivating a field year after year without effective soil conservation is like running a factory at full tilt without investing in either maintenance or repairs.” Dr. Shiva insists that real soil is full of life; that respecting the soil and giving back to the soil is the single, most important action we can take. Hawaiians have a saying: “To plan for the future look to the past.” Looking before the

plantation era to the early Hawaiian practices, we see a system based on long-term land, stream and ocean stewardship. With this in mind, Maui’s local farmers – ranchers, Upcountry growers, organic farmers, taro growers – need to share their wise practices with A&B and HC&S management to help them devise a long-term plan for the vast central Maui plain that should be our breadbasket. We can start by cleaning up contaminants, stopping erosion, and building a living food web based on local, non-toxic inputs. Future food security requires we rethink our whole system – from where we get our energy and food, to how we allocate public trust waters for the health of our islands rather than the wealth of corporations. If A&B had a viable plan, we’d have seen it by now. It’s time for all stakeholders to speak up now with their best ideas. Let’s plan for long-term health, not short-term wealth. Tips To Transform Your Life And Have A Great Year
By Maurgana Stiastny It’s a new year, and this is the time people get newfound inspiration to better their lives. That’s always good! Here are some tips to help us implement changes that can improve our health, happiness and wellbeing. 1. One of the best things to do in your life is to affirm that you are well. Affirming wellness programs our biology and our mind with wellness. Let’s face it, most of us have aches, pains, worries and challenges in life. The next time someone asks you how you’re doing, tell them that you are doing well. Because if you are not in a refugee camp or in the ICU at the hospital, you are basically well. After affirming wellness, then you can ask the other person if they want to know other details about your life. It’s not being inauthentic to affirm wellness. 2. Be grateful. There is so much to be grateful for in our lives. Just the fact that we are living is reason enough, but here on Maui we are extra lucky to live in such a beautiful place inspired by nature. Every day is a beautiful day. Some people write in a gratitude journal. It sets you up for having a great day. When we are in a state of gratitude, we do not let the little things get us down. 3. Be nice to your body, and develop better eating habits. It’s important to eat breakfast and lunch. Sit down to eat, relax, and chew your food. 4. Exercise! You don’t have to join a gym, but at the very least walk and stretch your body – 3 to 5 times a week at the very least. This is especially important if you are sitting at a desk a lot. You will certainly feel better! 5. Breathe deeply. Connect with your breath. It is your lifeline. Take a deep breath many, many times a day. It will help you to stay more relaxed and be more energized. 6. Stand on the earth with bare feet every day for a minute or two. This is a technique called grounding; it will clear away the excess electromagnetic energy in your field and it has a wonderful effect of decreasing inflammation in the body. It is especially helpful before sleeping. 7. Have better sleep hygiene. Every hour of sleep before midnight is equivalent to two hours after. The human body should get 7-9 hours of sleep. If you have to jack yourself up with caffeine, perhaps you need more sleep. Also, napping is great if you can make that happen. A 20-minute nap in the afternoon will do wonders for people. 8. Forgive and let go! That will free you from self-entrapment. Holding on to anger and resentment will pull you down emotionally. 9. Let go of the small stuff. We can get upset about countless irritations, but it’s just not worth it. Getting upset makes neurotransmitters in your brain that can literally make you sick. 10. Cut down on social media, computer activity and TV screens. Spend more time being present and personal with people, and make more face-to-face connections. 11. Be creative through art, dance, song and music. Think about what inspires you in your life and do it. 12. Clean up your space. When you get rid of the clutter, things will flow better. Guided By Spirit To Live My Dream On Maui
By Liah Howard As a psychic and light worker, I believe we are guided to live in harmony with our soul’s path. We may be nudged at times to move to a different location to fulfill an aspect of our soul’s growth or to connect with others in our soul family. Sometimes our light and energy are needed to assist in the healing of a region or a situation. Flexibility, commitment and faith in divine timing are required to heed the call when a transfer has been assigned by the universe. I first knew I wanted to move to Maui in 1976. My husband and I had been zigzagging and camping across the continent in our Volkswagen bus, with our two big dogs. We were looking for the ‘right’ place to live. Then while standing on a cliff overlooking the Pacific coast in Northern California, I felt the power of Maui tugging at my heart. I knew my soul’s journey would not be complete until I moved there. The timing wasn’t right and Hawaii had a strict six-month quarantine requirement for pets. I thought it would be cruel to subject our furry family members to that trauma, so we did not go. I put the desire to move to Maui aside until 1994. At that time, I was recently divorced from a long and difficult marriage, and I wanted to treat my four children to a tropical, healing holiday. When I first stepped off the plane in Maui, my entire body tingled with delight. By the end of our 10-day trip, I was enchanted. Maui’s magnetism had pulled me in. I knew I would return and that Maui was to be my home.
But again, the timing wasn’t right. My four kids were still adjusting to the divorce and I thought they needed time before they could handle more change to their lives. So I postponed the dream of Maui while I attended to the duties of single parenting and building my career in California. Finally in 2004, the universe gave me some signs. The first sign came when Hawaii changed its quarantine protocol for pets. The next

sign came when the man I had been dating for many years said, “No, I don’t ever want to get married.” I knew I needed to put some distance between us so we could both move on. The third sign came powerfully through my terminally ill friend. She softly held my hand and said, “Go for it, Liah, live your dream! Look at me. If I had known my life was going to be so short, I would have moved to Maui. Now it is too late.” I looked at her 48-year-old frail body lying in the bed and I made a decision. Rather than live a life of regret, I decided to take the leap and move. Three months later, my children and I triumphantly made the move to Maui with our dog, cat, car and a Matson container filled with furniture. I didn’t know anyone in Hawaii. Yet, I will never regret following my heart and moving to Maui. Journey To Storytelling By Sarah Tell Recently I met with an old friend, Ann Nehaya Walsh, who had just told a 50-minute story to adults at the Kihei Library. Listening to her tell “The Wisest of Creatures,” I was drawn in to an olden time and way of life, which felt so alive and intimate. I wondered how it felt to her as a professional storyteller. “It’s an honor,” she says. “It was the second time I’d presented this story. It is alive. Many stories are. Through copious practicing, I’ve come to rely on surrendering to the characters, for it is their story. I want to serve them and the audience.” She came about storytelling in an unusual way. “In 1993, I was sitting on a beach in Bellingham, Washington with my dear friend Greg Juul. Suddenly with no thought, I said, ‘I’m going to be a storyteller.’ “Greg said, ‘My girlfriend’s uncle, on the Big Island, is known as the Teller of Tales.’ “Immediately, I felt my soul spread its wings, thrust forward, and say, ‘Yes!’” She drew upon her extensive background with art, and as a dancer and writer since early childhood. When her family moved from Carmel Valley, California to Honolulu in 1977, she took acting lessons to force herself to enunciate, for she mumbled and spoke too fast. Ann said, “I swiftly fell in love with the Stage. Within months I auditioned for a fledgling theater troupe, Honolulu Theater for Youth, and was given lead roles.” In the summer of 1980, she learned American Sign Language while teaching swimming to severely disabled 5- to 70-year-olds in Santa Monica, California. Eventually she became an ASL interpreter in Bellingham. Independence came through performing original poetry and songs in a coffee house in Bandon, Oregon in the fall of 1988. When she was 26, her biological father died, “which liberated me in a true way. Everything rolled together that one afternoon, on that beach, with that friend.” Her storytelling career had wings from the start, in the telling and in gaining audiences. Yet, she recounts, “There was a double-edged sword: In my growing up years my parents did not know how to encourage me. I sense they did not know what to do with my passionate creativity and deep desire to express myself. So it was dismissed. I did not believe in me. I did not trust my natural richness with art to be worthwhile. Over time, with a lot of help, I came to believe and trust I had important things to give people through my art. At one point stage fright was three days before a performance; now it’s a few hours, because I’m so eager to get underway. Today, my mother and stepfather are quite encouraging. I feel very lucky.” So much thought and care go in to preparing each story for a performance. Ann explains, “It’s astonishing when people ask, ‘What book are you reading from?’ Or, they assume that I tell for children only. The sophistication, depth and wit required for taking an adult into a passage, being in its muddle, then rising up – restored, resolved, and enriched – is a good match for me. It keeps me in shape. It’s an intimate art, and

I’m humbled by the practice.” Over the years, she’s given way to being a conduit. “I listen to this most wondrous communique from Divinity, through the characters. I let them move through me to you. Rx: Hugs!
By Suzän Proia At the end of our water aerobics classes, after we have completed an hour of jumping and gyrating, we participate in a series of stretches. The last instruction the group receives is to give ourselves a big hug. A few weeks ago I overheard one of my classmates lamenting that she really needed a hug. She lives alone and does not have a significant other. My heart went out to her so I swam over and offered her a hug, which she warmly accepted. Positive energy was ignited. Another friend was nearby, and when he witnessed the interaction, he gave our mutual friend a hug first and then embraced me. This turned into a chain reaction as a fourth classmate joined in, followed by an inquiry from our instructor: “What’s all the hugging about?” she asked. “Free hugs,” I replied. She was sitting on the edge of the pool, but immediately dropped back into the water and distributed hugs all around. By this time, everyone was smiling, laughing and feeling joyful. That is all it took – a few minutes of no cost, readily available hugging. The scientific explanation for this response is that physical contact causes the release of a natural hormone, oxytocin, which affects our systems by reducing anxiety and stress. A mere twenty seconds of faceto-face embracing will create this reaction. Hugging will also facilitate the production of dopamine in our brains. Dopamine is the “feel good” hormone which increases pleasure. Imagine if doctors began writing these instructions on their prescription pads: “Take 3 hugs per day, twenty seconds per hug. I’m sure you’ve heard this term somewhere in recent years, whether suggested to you by a spiritual teacher, a long-deceased genius, a New Age affirmation card, or a modern quantum scientist. If everything is energy, this also means that everything is connected, and this is where the concept of energy starts to play into how the Law of Attraction actually works in our daily lives. In essence, what you focus on is what you will attract more of into your experience. Now what? While the theory of “The Law of Attraction” can be understood, to make it truly relevant you have to make it personal. What you focus on — and from which point of view, belief system, or assumption you focus — will determine how your focus makes you feel. In laymen’s terms, you are aligning with you — the you that extends beyond the physical. When you are in full alignment with yourself, your overarching dream and your sense of purpose, you become so powerful in your presence that things change around you effortlessly, all the time — even against the logical odds and rules of “reality.” Synchronicity becomes commonplace, and you eat miracles for breakfast. By simply focusing on what it is you desire and dream of, and by being in
alignment with your true frequency in that way (by feeling worthy of this power), you no longer feel disempowered by any circumstance.When you are in alignment, you decide what reality will be, and you know without a doubt that it shall become exactly that — somehow. Why? Because you are the creator of your reality; there is no question about it. You might not understand every nuance of this process yet, but there is no doubt that you are somehow choosing your experiences and attracting what you are exuding. Alignment is a power and a depth of happiness that can’t be bought; but it is a power and a happiness that can “buy you anything you want,” and get you literally anywhere you want to be. Be happy and feel your innate power first. Then the world is no longer your obstacle, but your best friend. You could boil suffering down to the experience of perceived “lack.” This, however, is the illusion. Through the practice of focusing your attention/ energy into abundance instead of lack, you are becoming more like the universe itself, and so naturally you will feel less abandoned and separate. You begin to experience yourself as an intricate, inseparable and valued part of the whole that is unconditionally supported and loved. A sense of purpose and inspiration returns to your bloodstream and you feel truly alive and truly powerful, in a humbled and non-egoic way. Precious Life Group Forms To Help Prevent Suicides
By Lew Abrams, Ph.D. The Maui community has been rocked by several suicides in the last few months, revealing that even in paradise, many of us experience ‘dark night of the soul’ moments. To grapple with feelings of despair is a natural part of being human, but in most cases, to act on such feelings is a waste of human potential and a devastating loss for the loved ones left behind. It is vital to point out the distorted thinking that fuels suicidal intent. We must challenge the belief that suicide is a viable way of “going home” and escaping life’s painful circumstances. If one takes one’s own life through a violent act, how likely is that to lead to peace? It certainly does not elicit a sense of peace in the friends and family left feeling abandoned and wounded, and questioning how they could have offered greater love and support. The school of life is played out as an embodied soul inhabiting the temple of our physicality; heaven and hell are not on the other side, but are self-created states of mind. As an immediate grassroots suicide prevention strategy, some of us have begun forming Precious Life Pods by reaching out to a small circle of friends and forming mutual support teams, agreeing to be there for each other if anyone hits the wall. A group text established when no one is in crisis can be activated with a simple SOS message that will trigger calls and action from the others in the group, who agree to show up and stay with the person at risk until the window of vulnerability passes or other help is obtained. No one commits suicide with a friend sitting by their side. To make it more likely that they will be used when needed, Precious Life Pods can meet monthly to bond more deeply, by sharing a meal or some fun at the beach. No matter what happens to us in the course of our lives, each dawn brings a fresh new opportunity to awaken in gratitude for the gift of life – for being in a body with consciousness to behold the play of light on the water, to smell the sweetness of a flower, to hear the song of the birds, or to share a healing embrace. Although life’s crises and desperate moments can be overwhelming, they are almost always time-limited and will inevitably shift if we can recognize that “this too shall pass.” Even if others let us down, misperceive our intentions, unfairly criticize or abuse us, our relationship with our Self, our connection to Spirit, remains as an untarnished crystalline core. It can provide the resilience needed to transcend any challenge, as long as we are breathing and are willing to open to the Grace and Magic in every moment. Together with Reverend Shelley St. John, we have started the Precious Life Community Task Force aimed at preventing further losses to suicide in the Maui community. We meet the first Thursday of each month from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the Temple of Peace in Haiku. Join us! China Awakens To Spiritual Heritage
By Paul O’Brien Sometimes perfect timing happens the minute you make a great decision and sometimes it takes years. My recent trip to China last October illustrates the point. The amazing synchronicities I experienced there proved the truism that “everything happens for a reason!” Attending this year’s International Holistic Centers Gathering outside of Beijing, I was asked to give a talk on my new book, Great Decisions, Perfect Timing. Now, Beijing is fascinating, but what hits you upon arrival is a thick and suffocating smog that makes it difficult to see further than a city block. Add traffic gridlock in a city of 20 million people and, in spite of great historic sites, the place is barely livable. The conference, however, was held at a resort community known as “Jackson Hole, China” (see articles online). A billionaire developer, Mr. Liu Xiangpiang, started developing this gated community a decade ago, adding a personal growth center and spa. He and his wife, Annie, were our most gracious hosts. The 1,500-home village is modeled on Jackson Hole, Wyoming and is a monument to the American dream of conspicuous consumption. The homes are log castles of 4,000 to 5,000 square feet that cost $1 to $8 million, and they are selling as fast as they are built. The town center reminds one of a Wild West theme park. To westernize things further, they built a church with a cross near the center of the town, which has become popular for weddings. A CNN article quoted Mr. Liu as saying, “Those who can afford to buy houses here, have enough money ... they want spiritual fulfillment.” Tai chi is a passion of Mr. Liu’s and he led an excellent Tai chi class to begin the conference every morning. One can hope that adding the spice of spirituality to a materialistic culture will lead China to a greater awareness of its own amazing heritage of Taoism, Tai Chi and the I Ching. My experience with Chinese people lends weight to such hopes, as I found myself in the ironic position of bringing concepts back to a modern China that knows very little about its own noble traditions. After talking about my ‘psychological’ I Ching, I took questions. Mr. Liu himself asked me if my version, called the Visionary I Ching, was influenced by personal growth experiences. I responded recounting many of the trainings I have undertaken. He asked if I had a Chinese translation of my I Ching. When I said “No,” he said he would like to publish it if I did. (I thought, “Maybe that is the reason I am here!”) The next day I met with nine Ph.D. candidates doing dissertations on the I Ching. When I explained Jung’s synchronicity and archetypes as a way to understand the I Ching, they thought I was a genius … another sign! Years of refinement of my modern I Ching (beginning in 1989 until the current Visionary I Ching app) have enabled the program to enter China at the right time. Sometimes perfect timing can take a while. In the case of a 21st century version of the I Ching returning to its roots, it only took 25 years! Receiving Love
By Ann Paquin Who we really are is Love. As our essential selves, love flows through us and we become attuned to exactly what is being called for in the moment. We give and receive unconditionally. When we view love offerings through the filters of our conditioned personality, however, we are less able to receive another’s deep love offering. Since most of us operate from our subconscious 80 percent of the time, we can benefit from increasing our ability to receive Love. The Enneagram offers insights and understandings into the inner workings of each personality’s subconscious, including the personal ways we offer love and protect ourselves. Different personality types offer love by giving varying combinations of time, affection, knowledge, appreciation, gifts and energy. Understanding these differences can help us recognize, receive and acknowledge the love being offered, even if it is different than that to which we are accustomed. This opens us to receiving more love because we no longer filter out a genuine offering simply because it doesn’t match our idea of how it is supposed to come. In difficult times, we feel a greater need for protection and support. When we withdraw, repress feelings or distract ourselves according to the habits of our personality, this interferes with our receiving love. By Judy Levy A few years ago I had the delight to sit with our precious Kapuna, Lei’ohu Ryder, who lovingly told me I couldn’t take the “Spirit name” Kuleana. I had just learned this beautiful word, which means “consciousness, responsibility and focus,” and I thought it would be a privilege to use that name as my new Hawaiian identity. However, being a sacred word, it was not an appropriate choice. I looked up the Hawaiian word for miracles, which is hana mana; and I gave that name to my car, telling her that she has the responsibility to drive me to all my miracles (which are daily events for me). I love sharing my little purple “Expect A Miracle” cards with new friends. I can testify that it works! It has taken over 40 years for me to deeply trust in this thinking – knowing that “Spirit” has my life handled and seeing She does a great job with it! Having been raised in a loving Jewish home, I now consider myself a “Spiritualist” as I actively celebrate life each Sunday at the Universalist Temple of Peace. My Discovery Of Hypnosis
By Lila Danielle “If you ever find yourself in the wrong story, leave.” – Mo Willems We are storytellers. All of us. From the moment we acquire language and are able to craft sentences, we begin telling stories. As children, we’re exceptionally good at making stuff up. Our imaginations are encouraged and allowed to run wild at younger ages because we’re kids. Make-believe and play-acting are a natural part of growing up. As adults, we continue to make stuff up and, unfortunately, many of the stories we tell about ourselves and others just aren’t true. What we often think is based on fact is really fiction. The story of ‘I’m not good enough’ is likely the most frequently told tale we fool ourselves into believing is real. And when we continue to tell that story repeatedly, it can influence every part of our lives – so much so that creating a new story for ourselves seems impossible. Nothing’s impossible. Especially when it comes to making stuff up in our own minds. The truth is...shi* happens in our lives, and we human beings often make it mean something altogether different than what actually occurred. Yes, terrible things happen; and yes, pain is real. And, we always have a choice about how we’ll make meaning out of anything. It might not feel like we can at times, but we are fully capable of seeing what’s true and what’s not. Any story in which we have to act false or be less than who we really are, can become a self-defeating, long-running performance. We can leave behind the wrong story we’ve imagined and choose a different one. We can create a new tale that’s far more worthwhile of living and telling because it’s based on truth.
By Barbara Ensign I haven’t always been a hypnotist. For many years I happily worked as an interior designer on Maui, until the day I went to the chiropractor. Just fifteen years ago, I was sitting in his waiting room when I innocently picked up a book titled Only Love Is Real by Brian Weiss. I couldn’t put the book down. It was a true story of Soulmates reunited. At the time, I had never heard of a past life regression, and this sounded very exciting to me. As soon as I finished reading the book, I knew exactly what I needed to do next! I set out to find a hypnotist to get a past life regression. I found someone within days and made an appointment. My first session was a success, but I knew I wanted to learn more. Over the next couple of years, I became a certified hypnotist through the National Guild of Hypnotists. During this two-year period, I received many past life regressions that have been emotionally healing, and I also learned how to facilitate a past life regression. I decided to take an advanced class that focused primarily on past life regression. One of the books on the required reading list was Journey of Souls by Michael Newton. Michael Newton is a hypnotist who had devised a method on how to take people to the spirit world using hypnosis. The book is a compilation of his case studies and their stories. I was fortunate to study with Dr. Michael Newton before he retired, and in 2004 I became certified with the Michael Newton Institute for life between lives spiritual regression. I could tell you my stories, but the best ones will be the ones you discover on your own.

Ancient Whispers
By Jody Mountain In many Ancient societies, knowledge, wisdom and teachings were not written. The ‘student’ observed the ‘teacher,’ and did as they were asked, without question. There was little ‘technique,’ reasoning or explanation. As a student, you became the instrument of your own understanding, purely through observation and experience. Your entire being softened to become completely receptive, listening without defining, listening to the unknown. Your body and the quality of your attention became the teacher. The sound of a river, a leaf brushing your back, the feeling of the smooth earth under your feet and a rhythmic breath called to you through the hidden language of Life Itself. You nurtured the ability to listen to Life, putting aside your beliefs of what ‘should’ and ‘should not’ be. As these polarities dissolved, you became more available to the wonder of what is here now. I Reached Out And Met My Best Friend By Jenny Grace Shaw “It’s Wednesday again,” she silently screams in her head as she rushes through the grocery store. “Oh my goodness, if I’m late he’ll be so angry and I’ll ‘pay’ for it until next Wednesday. Hurry up already! Please people, you don’t know how much I need to be on time!” “Aloha dear, how are you today?” The friendly cashier smiles and genuinely offers her a touch of welcome. “Hi there Kailani, I am terrific!” She lies. “Just on my way home to make a special dinner for Tom and the kids. Wow, what a great day we all had!” I hear her trying to make herself believe her own story. If only I could comfort her somehow, as I watch this precious human being desperately trying to mask her truths. How do I know this? Well, I am not God nor do I claim to be, but I do know what it’s like to hide in shame. I know how many masks I’ve had to create and maintain throughout my life just so I might “fit in.” An intense nausea in my core comes over me as I continue to see her desperate attempts to cover up her soul. I want to reach out to her, hold her, and tell her to let go, let it out. Gazing around the store for a moment, I notice different facial and body expressions everywhere. degree or relationship status. Mahalo!” Returning my focus, I find a new lens for the “situation” I am in. Suddenly, I am able to move; I am no longer frozen reminiscing about my own past masking. I am no longer distracted by the fear of expressing my truth. I wait until she’s almost complete with Kailani. Then I take a deep breath, smile wholeheartedly, and ask if I can help her with her groceries. She’s hesitant at first, so I gently touch her hand and grab a bag with the other, and I say, “it’s really okay, I love to help if I can.” It might have been the way I approached her
– not too intrusive and not stiff or fake – because she let her guard down. I could literally see her invisible, indestructible armor fall to the floor as she smiled back and began breathing again. That was the day I met my best friend. It’s not easy reaching out to others. Picking up that 500-pound phone is, sometimes, exactly how it sounds. I honor those who have the courage to approach another – whether family, colleague, friend or stranger – to start a dialogue about anything that comes remotely close to emotion. We know more about how the iPhone works than how to tell our mom and dad how much we love them. What’s worse, we are much more comfortable being angry, bossy, demanding, correcting, or intensely excited than embracing vulnerability. Yet, it’s the latter that we are not just hungry for, we are starving to death for it. The few moments of discomfort and fear you may experience when reaching out to another is much better than days, weeks, months or years existing in isolation. We all have important things to share. He showed through lab testing that the DNA of stem cells can be altered using magnetic field frequencies. DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) is located in the nuclei of cells, and stores genetic information that can be passed from one generation to the next. According to the Australian website, wakeup-world.com, Russian biophysicist and molecular biologist, Pjotr Garjajev, and his colleagues found that our DNA is not only responsible for the construction of our body, but also serves as data storage and in communication. Russian linguists found that the genetic code follows the same rules as all our human languages, and is programmable through the use of language and practices such as affirmations and hypnotherapy. ~The Essence Of Us~
By Lelle There is a story in the essence of the air that we breathe and the essence you share. Many of us have deep memories of aroma, and the connections they share with our past. I am writing a novel of my life through aroma. Witches Dream, Sunrise Mist, Elizabeth to the Power of Two, and Sanguine Pammy are just a few of the most recent additions to my perfume record book in my perfumery. While custom blending a perfume with my guests, I share with them the history of each oil, their origin and distillation. In turn my guests share the stories of how the aromas affect them as they document their custom perfume. At the end they share where they are from and a sentence or two about their life and take with them their creation. In my perfumology courses my first blend consisted of neroli and frankincense. Aromas from my childhood. Later, I added vetiver, Hawaiian vanilla and myrrh. I was content with these aromas until the night before my first date with my now boyfriend. He had sent me an oil diffuser for Christmas. It was a challenge to decide on an equally gorgeous gift. That night I completed a perfume for him, and added sandalwood from his forest, Haloa Aina in Kona, to the blend that I had been wearing for five years. I bottled it in a curly koa perfume atomizer. The next day on our date, I learned his son was a woodworker in his forest. Later that night we discovered the perfume bottle had indeed come from his very forest! We agreed it was fate that I had taken what was mine, and added his sandalwood into a bottle crafted by his son. The synergy was magic! I spent the next year developing my own version of the bottle, working with his son to harvest from the koa slash pile. A bourgeois graveyard of koa from the 1970s waiting for the moment to be reincarnated. I began aging botanical essences. Not like the lab created fragrance oils that are dangerous chemicals

Hope For Cervical Dystonia By Erin Elster, DC Cervical dystonia, also known as spasmodic torticollis or wry neck, is a debilitating movement disorder characterized by painful, involuntary muscle spasms that cause jerking, twisting, tremoring, and other awkward postures and movements of the head and neck. While the exact cause is unknown, many dystonia patients report a precipitating event – an incident of physical trauma directed at the head and neck. In fact, medical researchers increasingly are naming head and neck trauma as a primary cause of dystonia onset; however, onset of trauma-induced symptoms may be delayed for several months or years after trauma. Researchers believe that head / neck trauma triggers changes in the brainstem, including abnormal nerve transmission and neurochemical production. This disruption of brain function can lead to dystonia symptoms. Common sources of trauma include blows to the head, whiplash, and/or concussion sustained as a result of motor vehicle accidents, falls, and through high-impact sports such as surfing, soccer, gymnastics and horseback riding. Any of the above may cause ligaments supporting the head and neck to be sprained (stretched), which forces the upper cervical (neck) vertebrae out of their normal biomechanical position. This upper cervical misalignment can affect brain function and lead to the onset of dystonia. A chiropractic technique that focuses upon the alignment of the upper cervical vertebrae, known as upper cervical care, provides a unique approach for treatment of cervical dystonia. Upper cervical chiropractic care utilizes two diagnostic tools – thermal imaging and digital x-rays – to accurately assess an upper cervical injury. After determining a diagnosis of cervical injury, each patient’s injured neck is corrected by administering a precise adjustment by hand on a specially-designed knee chest table. An After Death Story
By Rich Ralston I would like to share the story of Herman, a soul that I once crossed over. While I was preparing to do a clearing session with a lady, a soul appeared before me as an old man with a white beard resembling a sea captain. He introduced himself to me as Herman, and then suddenly disappeared. As I was working with the lady, I asked her if she had a relative named Herman. She said no, but she explained that while sailing around the world on her yacht, she discovered a ghost on her vessel. Every time she went to the forward compartment, she noticed a foul smell. Though she checked everywhere, she couldn’t find a reason for the odor. She finally recognized that it was the doing of a deceased soul whom she named Herman. She came to an agreement with Herman – he would leave her alone if she would live in the aft of the yacht, and he could have the front. When her husband became very ill, they decided to sell the boat in Singapore. Every time a potential buyer looked at the yacht, something would happen that prevented the sale of the boat – a foul smell or an electrical shortage. She finally sold it at a reduced price, and then came back to the mainland. Herman followed her to the mainland, looking for someone to help him find his way home. As I communicated with Herman, I learned that he was the original owner of the yacht and had died on it. Understanding Your Body’s Wisdom
By Linda Rayner, M.D. When you do not express what is happening on an emotional level, these feelings manifest through the physical body. By understanding what the different body parts represent and how thought patterns can manifest through the body, we can better appreciate our bodies and the metaphysical origins of health problems. By learning your mind-body language, you can discover what is being repressed in your psyche and the effect this is having on your physical body. Recognizing your own signals requires patient, mindful attention – to notice what you are experiencing without judgment, criticism or guilt. At this time of year, respiratory infections are at their peak. Infection may indicate that someone or something is weakening your ability to defend yourself, or causing you to lose your balance or tolerance. Ear infections could relate to anger at what you’re hearing, or about someone not listening to you. Inflammation suggests you may be holding anger, or that an internal battle of beliefs/feelings is waging within. Influenza can be linked to someone or something having a strong influence on you, affecting your sense of self and purpose. Colds typically occur when there is viral exposure combined with lowered immunity due to stress. A runny nose and watery eyes are ways to release pent-up emotions. Coughing clears irritants from your system; this could indicate needing to get something off your chest, or feeling overwhelm or sadness. A sore throat can relate to feeling powerless or insecure, not being able to voice your feelings, or finding something hard to swallow. Let's Make This Happen
By Nikhilananda Hau’oli Makahiki Hou! It is now 2016, and this November the citizens of our country will choose a new president – number 45. I was born during the administration of our 33rd president. Those of us on Maui will not only choose our next president, but also our county council, state representatives, and member of Congress. Many contentious issues this election will affect our lives – the continual poisoning of our land and air from the antiquated burning of the cane fields; the spraying of potentially deadly chemicals and the proliferation of restricted use pesticides being spread throughout our county, via wind and runoff from fields on Maui and Molokai, on genetically modified crops in a gigantic open-air experimentation forced upon visitors and residents alike; the growing houseless members of our community; the ongoing stealing of our precious, cherished water; circumventing our State Constitution’s public trust doctrine; our bureaucratic public education system; and a myriad of other critical issues. It is extremely important for residents to register, educate themselves on the candidates, and vote for the betterment of our cherished island. As the adage goes: “Elections have consequences.” As the quality of life on Maui seems to be slipping for many residents, it becomes more important to not just sit on the sidelines, but to get involved. We have the power and the consciousness to make this happen. Regenerative farming has taken hold and farmers markets are sprouting all around our island. This November, we have the opportunity to turn our community around and create a progressive, environmentally focused legislature, by electing those candidates who truly resonate with our values. Get In Touch With Real Dreams
By Douglas J. Price, D.C. What stories are we living, and how do they impact our choices? Do these stories belong to us or to others? Sometimes the stories we carry influence us more than facts. In the case of college students, how often do we ask 19- or 20-year-olds why they are going to college? Many of them go without knowing the real reason why. If you were to ask them what their purpose was for attending college, some would say that they want a college education because their parents never had the opportunity to attend college. Some may think that if they don’t go to college, other people will regard them as being uneducated – keeping them focused on seeking approval from others. Some may not have attended college because of the expense, and may become frustrated by the lack of opportunities because they did not go to college – keeping them focused on the past. What is important, is that each individual must get in touch with his or her real dreams and aspirations from within. Many times this can be distorted by past traumatic experiences. We may unconsciously allow unanticipated traumas to shape our destiny, and let past triggers drive our reactions and our behavior before we even have a chance to think. These shocks are stored in our subconscious as a form of protection from pain and disappointment, but this doesn’t allow us to show the real story of who we are. Once we are able to find resolution from these shocks or conflicts, that relate to our stories and unmask who we really are, then we can truly be free to experience life the way we desire. By Shalandra Abbey Twenty-five years ago I took a huge leap of faith to fulfill a lifetime dream of living in Hawaii. After securely fastening my seatbelt, made of Reiki Natural Healing, I resigned my position in the corporate world; handed over the keys to my home at Doral Country Club to a realtor and asked her to sell it, rent it, or whatever; then purchased a one-way ticket to Hawaii Nei. Sounds great, right? Well, little did I know the lifestyle adjustments awaiting me upon arrival. The period of adapting to this laidback atmosphere wasn’t part of the dream. The first time someone asked if I wanted to talk story, I thought, sure. I figured we would go have a cup of coffee and get to know each other. No, that wasn’t what happened. I was taken to a coconut tree to sit for hours, talking about a little of this and a little of that. I received questions like, “Howz life treating you?” Shoots, I didn’t know the answer because my adrenaline was still moving on mainland time. Or I’d hear stories of how to ride the very different kinds of waves at the trillions of beaches on the islands. I had just moved from a chlorinated swimming pool with no waves for my rubber raft. I simply could not relate. Today, when someone asks me to take a break and join them in Iao Valley or at the beach, it is a totally different story. I anxiously await that precious treat because, after twenty years providing Reiki Natural Healing treatments and training, I truly know how to talk story and relax deeply. Just Enough Is All You Need By Joy Wynne Galatro There’s a reason people don’t usually make giant leaps in life. There’s comfort in the zone. It’s scary as hell to jump out of the box and into a new direction in life. I know. I’m doing it right now. What keeps me sane? Remembering to trust. To surrender. To. Just. Let. Go. That’s hard, though, for a Type A control freak trying to change her ways. My instinct is to jump in and figure it all out and put things into motion. But the miracle happens, I’m learning, when you step aside, get out of your own way, and watch your life’s purpose unfold, exactly as it’s intended. Any fidgeting and forcing, it turns out, turns into an easy flow when you simply let go. Synchronicity amazes me daily when I’m not busy trying to synchronize things. You meet who you’re supposed to meet. You show up where you’re supposed to be. And you get what you need. An example of this is a phrase that kept emerging during our recent life-changing move from Tampa to Maui: just enough. We decided to sell our 1,500 square foot bungalow in South Tampa for a 500 square foot studio condo on the beach in Maui, my childhood home. With one-third the living space, we realized this meant much less ‘stuff.’ We were ready for the opportunity to practice letting go, literally and spiritually, as we trusted in the journey ahead of us. With each step and at each milestone of the move, we had just enough time, just enough room, just enough, period. When I was taping shut the last packing box, the roll of tape ran out. Just enough. When I emptied my desk on my last day at work, I scooped up all the binder clips into what I thought was a box surely too small to fit
you realize in the present moment that you are perfectly provided for with no excess, no shortage. Just enough is all you need. And that is all I want. Just enough. As I wrapped up loose ends that last week before the closing of our house, each day I had just enough time to meet with each of my beautiful friends, my soul sisters. Nothing was rushed. We shared laughter, recalled memories and just enjoyed each other’s company as I told them each how much I loved them. A full week celebrating friendship. Just enough. At first, these two words may seem to convey a sense of something lacking. But there’s abundance in just enough. It feels full. And it’s about balance. You feel gratitude when

Our Glowing Blue Planet
By Jen Lighty Envision Earth from above. What is the first thing you notice? If you’re like me, you’ll be awestruck by the color blue. We live on a luminous aquamarine orb. Our liquid planet glows in the immense darkness of the cosmos. As far as scientists know, there is no other planet like Earth in the galaxy. Life exists on Earth because of water. In fact, Earth is actually 75 percent water, the same amount in the human body! The brain contains even more – 85 percent. We are fluid creatures, more water than flesh; and though most of us dwell on solid ground, we have rivers flowing beneath our skin and bones. At this time on our planet, we are witnessing the collapse of ecosystems worldwide. Due to mindless human overconsumption, animals and birds are going extinct at unprecedented rates; fish stocks are collapsing. Earth, air and water are polluted; and fire, in the form of oil, is being pumped from the ground to fuel unsustainable and deadly technologies. Yet most go on leading their lives as if none of this is happening. What can we do? It is time for us to reconnect with our origins in water, to treat it as the sacred and miraculous substance it is. It is time to realize we will not exist without it. We must remember that we, too, are sacred and miraculous. We are water; fluid, ever-changing, unstoppable. We must love ourselves, despite what we’ve done. We can be a wave of positive change if we choose to heal the waters within and without. We can be a blessing to our blue planet. This new state started to come into your experience during the month of August of last year, and now is in full fruition for many of you. However, always remember that you have individual paths and evolve at your own pace. That being said, here is the new state of affairs for many of you. “You are now manifesting from your heart space instead of your head space most of the time. This is good because the old way will not work anymore. Mother Earth and all the elementals, animals and the Devic kingdom are on board with this new way of beingness, and it will be the only way that is honored in your new reality. “Those who refuse to conduct themselves in this way will soon not be with us. However, most people will not have the will to fight the change in frequency, as it is being downloaded from the great central sun and the angelic realms so that you may all ascend in time. It is as I have said often, do you want to paddle your canoe against the current or let it take you easily down the river? “Things that you are desiring will come to you with much less effort. You will find life is no longer a struggle and blessings will flow to you easily. Lemuria Revisited
By Lavenda Schaff I believe the Hawaiian Islands are the remaining parts of a huge continent that used to exist, called Lemuria. The mountains were much higher and the climate colder. The people living on it were less dense. They communicated telepathically. Men and women were equals. In fact, no other way was known. Life involved following your innate knowingness, being in tune with the elements (including the etheric realms and much higher levels of energy). Music came from organs made of huge crystals. Teenagers were initiated into adulthood. Respect and honor were as important as food and drink are nowadays. People knew that they are the creators of their lives. The only way of being and communicating was with compassion, love, nurturing and deep understanding, in all humbleness. Life was sacred and filled with ceremonies and rituals to honor its magnificence and Divine connection. A big catastrophe destroyed Lemuria. The ancient Hawaiians, though, held those values strongly in their blood and bones – of honoring all life with love and respect. Many who used to live in Lemuria 26,000plus years ago have returned to Hawaii now as a way to remember. In today’s precious time of transformation, it is important for us to remember the old ways of living in love and harmony with the rhythm of nature, and in connection with the Goddess within. We can activate it and stimulate each other to stand strong for a benevolent future again. The call goes out, especially to us women, to be and become the spiritual leaders in the world – for the pathways of the Goddess to thrive again and bring back a peaceful, sustainable life for the whole tribe of Earthlings.
