Defending Mother Earth By Mark Sheehan Sometimes you can read history as one long effort to dominate nature, extract every resource possible, exploit every economic advantage, vanquish those who have been conquered, and trample the people at the bottom—a grim perspective, to be sure, but there has been a battle for control of the earth and the minds of the people since about 4000 BCE. Call it the dominator mentality run amok. Perhaps less well known is the nurturing force that has always understood that Gaia is our mother and we thrive as we work with nature. It is not a battle that can be won, but a deep understanding of our connection with the earth. The earth is not here for our pleasure; we come from the earth and need to preserve and protect her for our own wellbeing. Riane Eisler’s book The Chalice and the Blade contrasts the dominator model of death and subjugation to an earlier partnership model based on worship of the feminine and working with the natural world. Her book challenges the abusive aspects of our patriarchal traditions. The Chalice and the Blade celebrates the value of partnership, equality, collaboration, non-violence, and connectedness to nature. Eisler gives us some sense of the enormous power to heal that resides in the repressed feminine and lunar realms. Eisler’s theme is echoed by the famous Indian physicist, Vandana Shiva, who gave a speech a few years ago declaring that it was time to end the war against the earth. It’s not just the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, she claimed; “the bigger war is the war against the planet...that has its roots
in an economy that fails to respect ecological and ethical limits – limits to inequality, limits to injustice, limits to greed and economic concentration.” So the resource wars that we engage in are not just blood for oil, she claims; “it’s also blood for food, blood for genes and biodiversity and blood for water.” The patriarchy that controls the war machines and the food system also controls the mass media. What’s new is the Internet now offers a vast trove of news and varied points of view that expose both the cabal that manipulates everything for their benefit and the worldwide network of partnership working to implement a cooperative model for living in harmony with nature. You have to wonder where this control madness comes from, how it perpetuates itself, and what force can counteract it. Dr. Shiva says that this war begins in the mind. “Violent thoughts shape violent actions. Violent categories construct violent tools.” The very factories that produced explosives for war were later retrofitted to produce chemicals for the war against pests. But it is now very clear that this ‘green revolution’
has failed terribly. GMO soy is a good example of a biotech disaster; every week there are new reports of the harmful health consequences of this crop. In searching for an end to the cycles of violence against the earth, we have to look at the dominator mentality at the root of this control madness and the willingness to exploit for profit regardless of the consequences. This investigation leads into the corporate/capitalist marketplace that manipulates the flow of goods and services, where speculators, high-speed computer trades and other forces rig markets and skim profits at the expense of millions of people who live close to the land and at the edge of starvation. Rather than fight the media celebration of war, conquest and control, we need to create for ourselves and our children images and stories of a partnership model and other socially harmonious forms of organization in which giving and receiving pleasure and care occupy center stage. Dr. Shiva, who came to Hawaii this January to educate our leaders about the danger of GMO, speaks about Earth Democracy that cherishes the “worth of all species, all peoples, all cultures” so there is an equal sharing of the planet’s resources. “Defending the rights of Mother Earth is,” she insists, “the most important human rights and social justice struggle. Artists, Art Lovers, And Art Collectors Unite At Third Maui Open Studios
Art lovers and art collectors will love exploring the world of art on Maui this February. The 3rd Annual Maui Open Studios, taking place every weekend in February, promises to be a treasure for anyone who wants to support local artists and get a behind-the-scenes peek of how and where these artists create their work. Artists and artisans on Maui will open their studios and exhibition spaces to show and sell their work to the public, as well as “talk story,” connect and inspire visitors. Many artists also give live demonstrations of their process and techniques. The entire event is free to the public. This year’s participants include over 90 artists who work in a variety of mediums including glass, digital art, photography, jewelry design, bronze sculpture, mixed media, ceramics, Plein Air, silk painting, basket weaving, stone carving, printmaking and much more. Visitors are invited to join the artists at the Opening Celebration/ Preview Exhibition on Saturday, February 2 from 6:00-9:00pm at the Maui Tropical Plantation in Waikapu, where they can enjoy a cash bar, no-host pupus and live entertainment. At this event, visitors can also connect with the artists and preview some of their works. Finding Wisdom In Stillness And Silence
By Liah Howard Practicing the art of stillness, as a form of self-love, builds the foundation for a peaceful life. When we are peaceful, we are naturally attuned to our inner wisdom. Yet, we live in a society that values activity, noise and accomplishment. There is an alternate way emerging that invites us to sit still, listen within and access the tranquil silence that is beneath the chatter of the mind, the busyness of the body or the intensity of the emotions. This is evidenced in people like Eckhart Tolle, Adyashanti, and Amma, the hugging guru. They are living examples of individuals who have learned to quiet their minds and dwell in the calmness of being. These teachers precede their discourses with periods of silent meditation. They know that their wisdom is held in the silence. This practice of quiet presence is the key to loving ourselves. Yet, knowing this is not enough; it must be experienced first hand and on a regular basis to be beneficial in life. It’s similar to knowing vitamins are good for us; but if we don’t take them daily, they can’t help us. A daily dose of silent meditation strengthens one’s ability to withstand the winds of change life brings, just like vitamins ward off illness by building the immune system. In particularly stressful times, a vision quest or spiritual retreat may be appropriate to spend concentrated time in quietude. When we remove ourselves regularly from our busy lives and schedules to focus on loving ourselves through silence, we add significantly to our reservoir of inner stillness, which helps us
cope with life’s challenges. I remember a weekend silent retreat I attended years ago at Tassajara Zen Center in northern California. As I sat on my maroon zafu in the stark wooden temple at sunrise, I felt waves of jealousy come over me. “How unfair that these monks get to sit around and meditate all day, and I have to work hard and barely have time to brush my teeth.” I seethed as I breathed rhythmically in and out. It was at a hectic time in my life when I was single-parenting four young children and working
full time. I was exhausted and depleted. However, I was there to learn stillness, so I continued sitting with the monks. Ever so gradually, a softening happened in my body and a light appeared in my third eye. I then heard, “Be still and know I am,” emerging from the depths of my being. This then shifted to a state of utter stillness where I was suspended from the spiral of the busyness of life, to the bliss of complete peace, which I now know is my true nature. I had escaped the trap of the mind despite myself, and was held in the ever-present moment of love. This type of experience transports us beyond the personal realm into the impersonal realm of tranquility where our answers lie. When we can remember to draw on this infinite source of peace within our own being, despite the circumstances, we interrupt our old pattern of overreacting to what frustrates us. We instead know that everything is okay. It takes discipline and practice to rewire the brain to be still and quiet rather than active and loud. It is a gift of self-love to spend time in silence daily. This is how we access our Divine higher self, the wisdom of our souls, and live peaceful, happy lives. Healing Support For Pregnancy
By Andy Marcus While participating in my first course in Aquafloating, I saw a documentary called “Birth into Being” by Russian midwife Elena Tonetti. In this amazing film, she talked about releasing limbic (emotional memory) imprints of pregnant women so that the child in the womb and at birth does not have to carry the burdens of the mother. For example, my mother had a miscarriage before I was born and was told it would be dangerous to have another child. This created limbic imprints and embedded a sense of fear and trauma that I still carry. I have done a lot of therapy throughout my life to release this from my system. My current practice brings the good fortune to work with pregnant women and make a positive impact on them and their babies. Working in the warm water using Biodynamic Craniosacral Therapy is a wonderful way to support women through pregnancy. It releases stress and limbic imprints so newborns don’t carry this after birth. The therapy helps to calm the nervous system and balance the hormonal system. Providing a non-gravitational medium, the opening and movement in the warm water relaxes and loosens the body, especially around the spine. It also releases lower back pain, gives space for the organs through gentle traction, and offers a sense of lightness and wellbeing. Working with the breath and going underwater brings the mother into a similar environment as the growing child to create an unbelievable synchronicity, remembrance, and bond. The true magic is that the session is mostly led by the baby inside the womb setting the tempo and movement. Has Your Resolve Dissolved?

Many of us rely on willpower alone to achieve our goals, but that is usually not enough for a permanent change. How do you successfully lose weight, start exercising, or make other positive changes happen? Here are some thoughts. 1. Choose a date that resonates for you. January 1st is not necessarily the ideal day to begin your life changes. 2. Define your plan. If you share your goal with someone, choose wisely. Jealously and sabotage may follow. Write down your plans, and hold yourself accountable. 3. Take time to think about what you want to do and why. Positive personal change deserves introspection. Write it down for reference. For example, “I want to lose weight. Why do I want to lose weight? What will change?” 4. Determine when your issue began. For instance, have you always wanted to lose weight, or was there a specific life change or incident that preceded the gain? What emotions are attached to that? 5. Choose a tool to assist you in achieving your goal. Willpower and desire work as catalysts for change, but using additional support may make the transition less stressful and more successful. For example, EFT (emotional freedom techniques) enables you to take this information and shift your emotional connection to the issues, your physical cravings, or self sabotage. Your Target For 2013: Being You By Dr. Dain Heer, D.C. This is the time when people ask if you have any goals for the New Year. We all love that question, right? Do you know why? Because goals are actually a sneaky way to limit your life. What if something completely different is possible? I don’t set goals anymore and my life has gotten infinitely happier since I stopped. The original meaning of “goal” was actually jail and there are basically two things that happen: 1. If you don’t reach a goal, you judge yourself for not reaching the goal. 2. If you do reach a goal, but don’t acknowledge it, you destroy everything you just created. Then you start over again so you can reach the goal you’re set on reaching, even though you already reached it, because you didn’t acknowledge you did. (I know – phew!) I’d rather shoot for targets. I have a lot of targets for 2013. The beauty of a target is you can take aim as many times as you want. If you miss, you can take aim and shoot again. If you hit the bull’s eye, you can always shoot again and get another bull’s eye. Infinite targets equal infinite possibilities. Infinite goals equal infinite judgments. What if that’s why you have had such trouble setting and achieving goals? Would you be willing to go for targets this year instead of goals? You can view it as adding a brand new tool to your toolbox! I work with something called Access Consciousness, a set of tools, techniques and information to change anything you want to
change. They’re practical, pragmatic, weird and wonderful. I have the honor of empowering people to be more of themselves. Living Life Without Limitations!
By Aaron Pierson If we look at life from the viewpoint of each country or culture, we see there are many restrictions placed on our lives. We live in a world full of turmoil – one that lacks security, peace or any real comfort for our future. At a continually disturbing rate, societies are crumbling; people have no idea what to expect from today, and complete uncertainty for tomorrow. So from where do we find or draw comfort and security? It truly cannot be from our outer circumstances. For the most part, people create deep illusions in their lives and find it difficult to live in reality. We overeat. We overspend. We overindulge in almost every negative behavior we can find, and then a high percentage of us want to blame our negative circumstances on other people instead of realizing we create every circumstance in our lives by our daily choices! We can stop being the victims in life and become the victors, if only we will simply open our hearts to the true divine healing power and love that surrounds us in the beautiful creations we see everywhere. Each day we face difficulties. It helps to stop looking at life as good and bad. If we simply choose to see we have lessons to learn from,
we will see that some are easier than others, but nothing in itself is truly bad. If we look at these lessons as good ones and difficult ones, and all something to learn from, even the most difficult lesson can bring the most beautiful result into our lives. I have learned to embrace all things in life as a simple tool from which to mature and grow. Having come close to death many times in my life has taught me to put everything into a real perspective. We have to learn to drop the entire masks we tend to wear to hide or project something that we really are not. We have to also learn that anything we do with a selfish motive is always going to come back to us in a negative manner. We have to learn to keep our life force pure and not waste any
of it on negative behavior or negative thoughts. It is entirely possible to live a life pure and free from the limitations society and this world places upon us. It is an amazingly wonderful place to become free of the restrictions that are placed upon us the moment after we are born. I do not believe it matters in which country we are born. The chains and restrictions begin at our birth. It is up to you and me, as we begin to put the values of the heart above the values of materialism, and as we learn to follow the love, compassion and tenderness of our heart above all else. It is not what we gain, gather and build in life that really matters. It is who we become with our own heart and soul that is really important. We are all going through a spiritual awakening. The question is, will we wake up or continue to sleep in the dark? Make The Loving Choice
By Maribeth Theisen We sometimes feel justified in teaching, rationalizing, justifying, or getting even with someone we feel has treated us unfairly. After all, it’s our job to educate them, and they will learn if we explain long enough. Or, they deserve to be punished for their wrongdoing. To defend or comfort us, friends and relatives may reinforce that point of view. Recently, some of my own supporters encouraged me to respond harshly to someone they felt wanted to take advantage of me. When I considered that option, I felt hurt, angry, victimized and defensive. Instead, I chose to set a boundary in a loving and generous way. As a result I felt fresh, clear, peaceful and powerful. We humans have three parts to our brain: the reptilian brain, where flight or fight responses spontaneously occur; the mammalian brain, where feelings such as fear, sadness, indignation or pain instinctively arise; and our higher functioning cerebral cortex, which allows us to reason and choose. The good news is that when an unpleasant emotion is activated, you don’t have to live with it nor act on it. You get to determine how to respond. Next time you are triggered to react from a negative emotion, pause and ask yourself: How do I want to feel about this? When I look back on this, how will I feel about myself and how I behaved? What positive thought, word or action will lead to the peace or joy I prefer? If you still have difficulty achieving clarity, journal answers to the above questions. Talk about the situation with someone you consider to be wise and loving. Do not share with someone you suspect will attempt to bolster you with vindictive ideas. I Ching For Lovers By Paul O Happy Year of the Snake! February 10th is the first day of Chinese New Year, a time when I crack out that Taoist oracle – the I Ching, or Book of Changes. The I Ching may be the world’s oldest book, but it is far more than an encyclopedia of timeless wisdom. It is a strategic decisionmaking tool – one that has saved me from bad moves more times than I recall. This 3500 year-old classic is a sourcebook of the profound, practical wisdom that infuses the martial arts and Chinese medicine. The I Ching is designed to help us manage life’s changes, the challenges of uncertain times, and to execute a skillful approach to complex dilemmas with elegant timing. The I Ching works with combinations of 64 timehonored archetypes that offer sophisticated advice. And it is an easy tool to learn and use. In a book I’m now writing – Great Decisions, Perfect Timing – I describe divination as one tool for stimulating intuition to think outside the box around problems that logic can’t handle … you know, little things like relationships. Ching relationship reading will help you at least develop better timing while providing wise advice, usually along the lines of one of three approaches: “Should I be assertive and make a move now; should I bide my time, be patient and let things come to me; or should I just get the hell out of here? What is the best approach to take vis-à-vis [name]?” Create your own little I Ching consultation ritual. You don’t have to write down a question or name – just hold an image of the person you are thinking of or wondering about in your mind and concentrate on it while you hold three coins. Returning To Source

I don’t know about you, but for me, there seems to be a potent new atmosphere, and I am immediately reminded to ‘Return to Source.’ Over the past 22 years, this has been one of the most powerful teachings for me. It is the directive that causes me to take 100% responsibility for everything in my world, and at the same time, become a ‘Divine Creator.’ It is a teaching that I cannot hide from, or it will demand my full attention. In the beginning, I looked everywhere for Source. From where did I receive my fulfillment, love, creativity, peace, abundance? I spent time looking for Source in the Church; later, in my career, in relationships, spiritual teachers and in nature. These were difficult years, as each subsequent, painful encounter led ultimately to disappointment. Through accessing Ancient Cellular Wisdom, I began to feel and experience Source inside myself, in every aspect of my self and my life – every situation, every blockage, every bliss. My perspective changed from being a victim of circumstances, to being the Creator of my experience. I realized that Life is not happening to me; I Am Life, and every moment of my existence is pouring out of me. Coming into alignment with this Divine Force allows me to come from and respond to the Highest and Deepest Kaona (level of perception) of every situation. It has allowed me to recognize the Divine Creator in every other person I meet. Just greeting others with a glance has become revealed as the Divine meeting the Divine, Love itself unveiled in form – true Aloha! As we gather together in this alignment, nothing will be able to stop the One Heart, the One Love from rippling through the matrix of our existence, leaving wholeness in its wake. Are New CFL Bulbs Sickening?
By Debra Greene, PhD We are constantly being told to replace “old-fashioned” incandescent light bulbs with compact fluorescent bulbs (CFLs). But CFLs, or the curly-cue bulbs, are harmful to humans and the environment. CFLs contain toxic mercury that will end up in the land and ocean unless they are disposed of as hazardous waste. In addition, some CFLs emit radio/microwave frequency radiation. They also contribute to something called dirty electricity, which has been implicated in a slew of health issues including cancer, diabetes, migraines, fatigue, dizziness, ringing in the ears, eye strain, nausea, skin irritations, increase in blood sugar, and multiple sclerosis. What is dirty electricity? CFLs have a large base, or ballast. Most electronic devices these days have a box attached to the cord, or have very large plugs, containing components designed to alter the electrical current or voltage. It’s more complex than this but, for the sake of simplicity, the transformers act to chop up the electrical wave. If a stream of water was flowing from a garden hose and I did quick karate chops with my hands, repeatedly cutting through that stream, it would create a lot of splashing around. A similar thing happens with electricity. When ballasts and transformers alter electrical waves, this creates ambient frequencies that “splash around” and run into each other, creating even more frequencies. These chaotic frequencies create dirty electricity and make people sick. What Can You Do? • Use “old fashioned” incandescent light bulbs • Return CFL bulbs and ask for a refund • Create an electronics-free safety zone around your bed (at least 3 foot radius) • Unplug electronic devices when not in use • Consider throwing the breaker to your bedroom at night • Visit www.RadiationPage.com for more tips

Female/Male Roles Evolving
By Judy Levy The spiritual community on Maui had a “rebirth” on the days of the winter solstice and end of the Mayan calendar with a 36-hour event at the Sacred Earth Temple. Two highlights from the event were the “Wise Women of Maui circle” and the “Envisioning the New Masculine circle.” We were privileged to witness and participate in such open, authentic, and heartfelt communication between men and women. Ed Fell, who masterfully facilitated the men’s circle, shared a story about a friend who studied the unique culture of the Masai people in Africa. It was asked, “what makes a great man?” The elders spent a full day in discussion. The answer was that a truly great man is able to maintain a balance between “being extraordinarily fierce when this is necessary and extraordinarily gentle when this quality is called for.” The men of Maui poignantly shared the challenge of finding and maintaining this balance in the modern world. They expressed their frustration with the current and somewhat distorted paradigm, and the confusing roles between men and women. Both of these segments were intense, rich and indicative of a societal desire to forge new understanding of how we can all relate more compassionately with deeper understanding. Perhaps this can be achieved by focusing more on our shared humanity and less on our differences. In April, many couples from Maui and California will share the secrets of their joy at a cutting edge symposium on Maui. This “new time” calls for a grander conversation about creating new understanding of the mysteries between the sexes so that more of us can discover and celebrate divine partnership!

How To Feel Qi
By Jennifer Livingston Qi (chi) is the life-force energy keeping us alive. It circulates through all living things, connecting us deeply and holistically. Qi has many names – ki, prana, mana. Whatever you call it, the real question is how can you tap into it and be more fully alive? Searching beyond the mechanical explanations of health and illness that I received during nursing school, I was introduced to qigong (Chinese breathing and movement exercises) by a friend. She explained that qigong means “energy work” and that it was systematized in ancient China by Taoists to develop qi in the body. Qigong forms the foundation for traditional Chinese medicine, acupuncture and tai chi, which is considered a type of qigong. When I first learned qigong, the movements felt a bit awkward and I felt very little happening, but I stuck with it. After I got over the initial coordination challenges, I started to become increasingly present to what was going on deep inside my body. I noticed gentle shifts in my body and increases in my daily energy reserves. I felt better, happier and stronger. My friends began to comment, “you have so much energy; what are you doing?” Then one day it just clicked. Feeling qi became a concrete experience! New sensations opened in my body-mind. I learned that just like any muscle, you can train and develop your nervous system. This is the art and science of qigong. The more you work with qi, the more sensitive you become. Qigong has brought new levels of vitality, peace and intimacy into my life. I am immensely grateful to this ancient wisdom. Qi is inherent in all of us and it costs nothing. Love Your Body With Ashiatsu!
By Vicki Sorenson What is Ashiatsu? “Ashi” means foot, and “atsu” means pressure. It is a style of massage that originated in Japan as barefoot shiatsu, which focused on the movement of “chi.” Barefoot massage has a history in several cultures including India, Fiji, Thailand, Philippines and Hawaii. Most of these are practiced on a floor mat using balancing props such as ceiling bars, chairs, bamboo rods, poles or ropes. Today, we have a new incarnation called Ashiatsu Oriental Bar Therapy (A.O.B.T.), which was developed by Ruthie Hardee. A.O.B.T. puts a Western spin on the ancient healing art of barefoot massage. It is performed on a table, rather than the floor, to help the body absorb the intense pressure and to keep the neck straight and comfortable with a face cradle. Secure overhead bars are used for balance and safety, allowing the therapist to hold her weight up and to work from many angles with the feet. The broad pressure of the foot is much more comfortable than the poking sensation from using thumbs and elbows. A.O.B.T. is a deeply relaxing treatment. The therapist’s body weight is used to press, glide, swirl and relax the muscles, as in traditional Swedish massage. It increases circulation and helps to elongate the spine. After a few treatments, it can help to improve the client’s posture and movement, relieve pain, improve bodily function, and create an overall sense of wellbeing. Who is A.O.B.T. for? It’s for people with chronic back pain, sciatica, scoliosis, etc. Athletes and surfers will love it. When living in Hana, ants left piles of carnage in predictable spots in my house. I’d clean them up week after week, vexed, but not wanting to use chemicals, for it felt punishing to the ants, earth, and to my good bodily health. I prayed. I angrily talked with the ants, sometimes threatening them. One morning, I talked with the ants from my heart and with respect. I told them they had the entire jungle to live in, and that inside this building was my territory. If they insisted on inhabiting my space, I needed them to be respectful. “Clean up your own mess. If you must be in my kitchen, keep to a corridor away from the counters.” As weeks went by, the ants’ corridor remained steady, but away. The piles of carnage remained scant and were no longer left in all previously predictable spots. Admiration unfolded. I came to call the ants “kids.” I’d walk into my home after a long day away and say, “Hi kids!” Earth is a gracious and generous hostess to all Her creatures, of which we are one. What Limits Us From Love?
By Maurgana Stiatsny I love the subject of love. It has such richness and depth for me. My friend and I recently spoke about love. This friend is a true lover of love. He posed the question, “What are our limiting beliefs that keep us from love?” Another provocative question is, “What are our beliefs about those beliefs?” Take a moment to reflect on these questions. The only thing that keeps us from love is that we believe our limiting beliefs, which are not even true. We all have beliefs such as, “I’ll never find love,” “There’s never enough love,” or “I’m not deserving of love,” to name just a few. The only truth about our beliefs is that we believe them. If we inquire into these beliefs, we can uncover the places that need love the most. When we simply turn our attention to the heart and to love, we increase our capacity to be love and to have more love in our lives. The art of love is to create more emotional space within our being so that love can move through us more freely. I recently held space for someone who was healing his heartache and embracing it as a deep opening to be able to love more. It was beautiful for me to witness this. He was definitely a warrior of the heart. I think of the heart as a mirror to the soul. We can reflect in the mirror what we choose and we can clean the mirror in order to see ourselves more clearly. It is in our power to become love. With every breath, feel your being infused with love. Embrace the love that you are and you will get more of it. A meme is a cognitive or behavioral pattern that can be transmitted from one individual to another individual. Since the individual who transmitted the meme will continue to carry it, the transmission can be interpreted as a replication; a copy of the meme is made in the memory of another individual, making him or her into a carrier of the meme. Consider the meme of ‘love’ and its replication in the human spiritual organism, as well as its effects on the world. Our thoughts, feelings and intentions are indeed changing things! So take the initiative to self-actualize into the most beautiful possible version of yourself, and watch that behavior spread. Righting Relationships
By Amrita Grace Have you ever wanted to heal one of your relationships, but didn’t know where to start? I certainly have, and I wanted to find a way to address the issue within myself first. I combined two powerful tools for an effective process I can do alone. The first tool is the ancient Hawaiian practice of Ho’oponopono (make things right). I begin by repeating, “I’m sorry, please forgive me, thank you, I love you.” The second tool is my imagination, in a process called inner journey work. In a quiet location, I close my eyes with an intention to resolve the relationship, and simply allow whatever images appear to unfold. I don’t try to guide or change them; I simply observe. I’ve found that my subconscious mind uses symbols and imagery to guide me into resolution. For example, a couple I wanted to heal my relationship with appeared in my imagination as tame rabbits. As I spoke the words of Ho’oponopono to them, the rabbits held an ornate mirror up for me to look into while I spoke. After that inner journey session, I understood that healing our relationships is always an inside job. By doing my inner work, I take responsibility for my contributions to the difficulties in the relationship. When I’m willing to look, I often discover that the qualities I’m blaming someone else for are things I’m not willing to see in myself. The art of right relationship begins within. Now, when I find myself wanting to blame someone for my bad feelings, I look in the mirror and say “I’m sorry. Please forgive me. Thank you. “Rebirth 2012” Revisited
By Rev. Debbie Dehm What did you do to celebrate the winter solstice? I attended a wonderful two-day “Rebirth 2012” celebration at the Sacred Earth Temple in Haiku, hosted by organizers Blue Mountain and Moriah, on December 21-22. They had a cadre of friends and volunteers to pull off this amazing celebration of light, love and peace. There was a lot going on during the two days, including ceremonies, yoga, music, dancing, a sacred fire, drumming, and much more. There was a focus on balancing the divine feminine and divine masculine, and coming together as community to create a sustainable world for the next seven generations. One of the highlights for me was the men’s drum circle, with all the women standing behind them dancing to the drums. Parts of the event were broadcast live on the Internet as part of a global meditation for peace. There were luminary speakers from other countries via Skype, as well as our own local luminary Ram Dass. Keiki were welcome and some of the most profound wisdom came from them when they had a chance to speak. There was also a keiki choir that sang. Another highlight was the presence of Mother Mary when she was called upon by Camille Moritz, and the scent of roses filled the room. Some people have said they were disappointed that “nothing” really happened on the solstice. I wasn’t. I was overjoyed that there were no cataclysmic disasters on the Earth, no suicide cults, or other catastrophes. I was overjoyed to see so many people around the world focused on positive and uplifting feelings of love, joy, unity and peace. It is a proven fact that focused intentions of meditation and prayer on positive outcomes do make a difference. Nothing happened? Time will tell. Listen With Your Heart
By Paul Solomon In relationships, the most important lesson we can learn is to listen with our hearts. When we feel threatened, we go into protection mode; we defend ourselves by fighting, fleeing or freezing. When we feel safe, we open our hearts to express love and to play. During conflicts with others, we often go into protection mode. We react with anger, withdrawal or acquiescence. We may defend our position, try to convince the other that our point of view is correct, or manipulate or use power plays to get our way. We want to win the argument, and to be right. Instead of listening, we are formulating our responses, and judging or blaming the other. But loving relationships aren’t about winning or being right. They are about trust, respect, love and empathy. What most people yearn for is to be seen and loved for who they really are. Listening with the heart means listening with love and compassion. It means being totally present to what is being said and expressed. It involves hearing what the person is truly saying, understanding the need being expressed and empathizing with your partner. Sometimes this means being able to discern the emotions underneath the anger (without being reactive). It is about helping your partner feel safe to open her heart and express her truth without the fear of attack, shame or invalidation. Of course, if we want our partner to listen with his or her heart, we need to speak from our hearts without criticism, judgment or blame. When we listen and speak from our hearts, we create the space for love to blossom and deepen. Then every day can be Valentine’s Day. Love Starts Within
By Heather Ardoin What is love? In all its forms, the pain, the joy, the opportunities; to look inside and see ourselves, for whom we really are and then to share that space of love with others all around us. This is the connection to life we long for. It starts within… Love is the essence of life. It is the ultimate healer. Our fourth chakra, or Anahata as it is called in Sanskrit, represents our basic right to love and be loved. The Anahata has a relationship with the thymus gland, which is an important part of our immune response. It also is related to the element of air and is ruled by the breath. The following restorative yoga asana focuses on opening up the area around our heart chakra, combined with a focus on the breath. Roll up a Mexican blanket or beach towel lengthwise, then place it on a floor mat or bed. Lie down on the blanket so that your tailbone is off the blanket, but the rest of your spine, including your head, lies comfortably on the blanket roll. Place your arms comfortably by your side. Begin to breathe in and out through your nose in a slow and relaxed manner. Begin to imagine yourself breathing in and out of your heart. Feel your heart expand with each breath, sending love out into the universe. With each inhalation, imagine universal love filling you back up. Meditate on this natural cycle of giving and receiving love for 5-10 minutes, or longer. Acknowledge all of the physical sensations and emotions you experience during this practice, as you bring healing to yourself on many levels. Lomi Is Love And Art
By Maluhia Zorzi There is an ‘olelo no’eau, or Hawaiian proverb, that says “Aloha i kekahi i kekahi,” which means “love one another.” Hawaiian lomi, or lomilomi, is both love and art. Lomi was practiced by families of different ahupua’a (land divisions from mauka to makai). According to Wikipedia, lomilomi was traditionally practiced in four contexts in ancient Hawaii: 1) As a healing practice by kahuna lāʻau lapaʻau (healers) and kahuna hāhā (diagnosticians), 2) As a luxury and an aid to digestion, 3) As restorative massage within the family, and 4) By ʻōlohe lua (masters of the Hawaiian martial arts). Like all endeavors in old Hawaii, to this day lomilomi is conducted with prayer and intention. Hawaiian kupuna (elder) Auntie Margaret Machado describes lomilomi as “praying” work. When a treatment was to be given, prior to the client being seen, the kahuna lā’au lapa’au (healer) would go out and gather the herbs to be used during the treatment, using pule (prayer) while picking the herbs. During this time no one should call him or distract him, so as to not interrupt the vibration of the gathering. At Hale Ho’omana, therapists and students are given tools that could be considered an art form. For example, rhythmic dance-like movements of the therapist’s hands, forearms, and feet are used to break up fibrous deposits of lactic acid, improve circulation of blood and lymph, eliminate toxins and edema, and increase metabolism. The therapist utilizes techniques of compression, vibration and more to achieve complete alignment of the body and spirit. We, as lomi practitioners, believe in the connection between the spirit, mind and physical body.
