By Mark Sheehan â&#x20AC;&#x153;The Universe is made of stories, not of atoms.â&#x20AC;? â&#x20AC;&#x201C; Muriel Rukeyser I think it was while I was in the Army that I realized that people were stuck with world views based on stories they kept telling themselves. The Army was an entire universe of people with related stories. Accepted into a graduate program, I secured an early release from the military world and started work in psychology hoping to work with a famous resident psychologist. But the focus on rats and statistics soured me on that ďŹ eld, so I retreated to the realm of English literature and the comfort of time-tested stories. A few years later, I encountered the work of Abraham Maslow and the whole idea of studying healthy people made a lot of sense â&#x20AC;&#x201C; different stories from those elicited from people stuck in problems. But it was my tenure as director of an experimental high school in northern California in the late 1960s that got me interested in just how people develop certain common life scripts from formative events in their early lives. In was the Ęť60s, so I also had to know: did the psychedelics that students were taking free them from their core illusions? Were the drugs a passport to reality or a gateway to a more marvelous world of fantasy? I enjoyed the thrills myself, but still seemed to be stuck with my old self. In early 1972 I read John LillyĘźs The Center of the Cyclone. His report of work in Chile with the philosopher-mystic Oscar Ichazo sounded like just the ĘťliberationĘź I needed. Within a few weeks, I found myself taking three months of Arica (selfdevelopment) training in San Francisco. The physical exercises included a daily rou-

tine of Psychocalisthenics, almost daily African dance and tai chi. There were deep relaxation techniques, small group exercises called â&#x20AC;&#x153;karma cleaningâ&#x20AC;? for recalling conditioning events from our pasts and releasing the pain connected to critical, conditioning traumatic events. These exercises helped me erase a great deal of the pain from my past while realizing that my ĘťstoryĘź was hardly unique; it fact, the ego patterns follow predictable themes. I experienced such a profound personal transformation from this training that I walked away from my career in higher education research to teach this remarkable work in Hawaii for 10 years. Those famous 40 Day Trainings attracted students from all the islands and from around the world. Years of exploring human development systems â&#x20AC;&#x201C; from Aikido to Zen â&#x20AC;&#x201C; helped me understand that greater vitality and mental clarity can be obtained from all serious work. As Malcolm Gladwell points out in his wonderful book, Outliers, it takes 10,000 hours to achieve mastery. Of course, the gurus never tell you that, otherwise you wouldnĘźt start. Personally, I always hoped to get hit by a cosmic thunderbolt powerful enough to stop my mind but not my heart â&#x20AC;&#x201C; like

what happened to Eckhart Tolle and Byron Katie! But there is another approach that is easier and that you can start right away without signing up for a course. It is based on the ďŹ ndings of two psychologists who decided to study unusually happy people. Here, in a nutshell, are the key choices that those people make: 1. Intention: Having an active desire to be happy and and committing to living that way. 2. Accountability: Choosing to create the life you want to live, taking full responsibility, refusing to blame others. 3. IdentiďŹ cation: Continually looking into yourself to see what makes you uniquely happy. 4. Centrality: Making sure that what makes you happy is central in your life. 5. Recasting: Converting problems into opportunities, transforming trauma into something meaningful. 6. Options: Approaching life with multiple scenarios, being open to new possibilities, a ďŹ&#x201A;exible life script. 7. Appreciation: The choice to stay in the present, making each experience precious, appreciating deeply. 8. Giving: Sharing yourself with friends and community. 9. Truthfulness: The choice to be honest with yourself and others in an accountable manner by not allowing societal, corporate or family demands violate your internal contract. Maui Open Studios Event Showcases ArtistsĘź Creativity

By Marci Winters For the ďŹ rst time ever, the Maui Open Studios Event will be held on the ďŹ rst three weekends of February, 2011. Across the island, talented artists will open their studios to the public and art collectors and invite them to watch them in action doing what they do best â&#x20AC;&#x201C; creating art! For West and South Maui, the free self-guided tours will run 10am - 6pm on Saturday and Sunday, Februray 5 and 6. They will be on February 12 and 13 in North, Central, and Upcountry Maui, and on February 19 and 20 in Hana and East Maui. On the second weekend, the Hui NoĘźeau Visual Arts Center in Makawao will host demonstrations in printmaking, jewelry and ceramics. The eventĘźs founder, acclaimed ďŹ ne art photo collage artist Carolyn Quan, will also be presenting her work that weekend. Formerly on Maui, and now based in northern California, Quan has spent countless hours organizing and promoting the event. Because she owned an artist co-op gallery in Lahaina for three years, and also ran a gallery that featured her work in Oahu, she has had the opportunity to develop many relationships with other artists in the area. Inspired by other successful open studio events on the mainland, she says that she â&#x20AC;&#x153;thought about Hawaii every morning when she woke up and every night before she went to bed.â&#x20AC;? She missed Hawaii so much that she wanted to ďŹ gure out a way to spend time here every year for at least a month. Her enthusiasm for the event was obvious as she continued, â&#x20AC;&#x153;Hawaii doesnĘźt have anything like this. A lot of fellow artists yearn for more exposure.â&#x20AC;? So the seed was planted and QuanĘźs boyfriend helped her with the project. She laughs, â&#x20AC;&#x153;First we thought maybe 30 artists, now we have 107! Maui is such a Mecca for art collectors.â&#x20AC;? Artists who work in a variety of mediums including glass, silk painting and photography are contributing. Also taking part in the event: wood carvers, graphic designers, textile designers, sculptors, metal artists, digital artists and ďŹ lmmakers. A visit to the Maui Open Studios website (mauiopenstudios.com) will allow participants to plan their own unique self-guided tours by exploring the artists and their work. This tour provides a unique way to talk story with over 100 artisans, learn about their backgrounds and ďŹ nd out more about their individual techniques. A full-color guidebook on participating artists with a map is also available. For those who are digitally challenged, or who would love to have a beautifully printed souvenir, printed guidebooks can be found at Gallery Oceanica, 780 Front Street, in Lahaina. Three weekends of tours will allow island visitors to experience at least one of the weekends and it also enables artists who are participating in the event to tour other artistsĘź studios. By Suzan Proia, C.Ht. Many years ago I overheard a conversation between two saleswomen that changed my life. What I heard piqued my interest. This is the story I heard: About a month prior, â&#x20AC;&#x153;Alison,â&#x20AC;? had been taking a shower when she smelled something odd. She opened the bathroom door, and smoke came barreling out. Her home was on ďŹ re. AlisonĘźs husband was safe at work, but their daughter was asleep. Alison screamed for her daughter, found her through the thick smoke, and dragged her out. They collapsed on the lawn â&#x20AC;&#x201C; Alison wrapped in a towel, her daughter in singed pajamas. The ďŹ remen attempted to save their home, but it burned to the ground. They lost everything but each other. Fast forward one month. The family was living in a trailer while rebuilding their home. Why was Alison ďŹ lled with joy? Because as she watched the ďŹ re that morning, something inside of her shifted. Suddenly, she knew what really matteredâ&#x20AC;&#x201C; her family would survive. As I drove home, the story played in my mind. If that happened to me, I would want to die. Sad, but true. The Art Of Love

By Liah Howard Although I am no expert, I have learned a few things about love in my life. The lessons havenĘźt always been easy, but I believe there is as much value in the pain as there is in the pleasure. The soul wishes us to grow and become more loving through both dark and light experiences. Romantic love is an incredible opportunity to stretch our ability to love unconditionally. A partner is bound to unearth long-buried hurt and inadequacy rooted in old wounds. Perhaps our parents were challenged in their abilities to fully love; perhaps we suffered trauma. Forgiving those who disappointed or injured us is the ďŹ rst step. When we remember that our very essence is love, we stop seeking it from others and learn to be present instead. Consider all of those movies that tell you you must ďŹ nd your â&#x20AC;&#x153;other halfâ&#x20AC;? so you can feel whole and complete. Feel how untrue that really is. Your soul knows that you are enough and have value just the way you are. You came into this world complete, and one purpose for having a partner is to complement the other so you can each shine your gifts more brightly, enjoying the journey of life with depth and support. In honor of ValentineĘźs Day, here are 14 things to share and remember about love: 1. Love by itself is not enough to make a relationship work; it takes elbow grease and grace as well. 2. Be who you are and see who sticks around. 3. Love needs no defense. Give up defending your position and just be loving. It is more important to be happy than to be right. 4. When someone lashes out, itĘźs a sign s/he is in need of love. Strive to stay in your heart and feel love for them, even if s/he is unkind, even if that person is you. 5. You must be willing to give up control in relationships; they have lives of their own. 6. Your happiness and self-approval do not depend on anyone else. True intimacy begins with you. Learn to enjoy time alone. 7. It is never a mistake to love. The soul knows the reasons why, even if you donĘźt. 8. Love without attachment and love others exactly as they are. 9. Love is demonstrated and felt more through positive actions than through golden words. 10. It is enough for you to be a living expression of love â&#x20AC;&#x201C; you donĘźt have to earn it. 11. ItĘźs OK to say youĘźre sorry and to accept an apology from your partner. You are both entitled to a â&#x20AC;&#x153;do-overâ&#x20AC;? when necessary. 12. Let go of past hurts and negative beliefs about relationships. Be present in love and trust with your partner. 13. DonĘźt ever be in too much of a hurry to hug the ones you love and say â&#x20AC;&#x153;I love you.â&#x20AC;? 14. The forms and actions of this world â&#x20AC;&#x201C; like bodies, sex, and food - may be illusions, but they are made real by love. Embracing The Truth Frees Our Beings

By Ed Fell Eleven years ago I had a close call with death. I was ill and lost 15 percent of my body weight in 31 days. The pain was severe and medications didnʼt offer relief. My monkey mind was shouting profanities at God, the medical profession, and my body for betraying me. I feared this nightmare would never end. I wanted to die rather than experience another minute of this agony. Life though, was not done with me. One night, I realized something that helped: I noticed that when my mind projected into the future and imagined more suffering or focused on a particularly difficult moment of the past, my body tensed and pain increased. Conversely, when I focused directly on the actual experience, pain lessoned and my body relaxed. Focusing on reality rather than exaggerated illusions manifested peace. While I was not pain free, this technique brought significant relief. I discovered that the real truth, not the exaggerated illusions of the mind, were crucial to not only managing pain, but in living an authentic and compassionate life. Interestingly enough, research has proven that low levels of both DHEA and magnesium characterize most illnesses and basically determine your present state of health. Change Expectations For Easier Sleep By Michael Krugman If youĘźre striving to improve the quality of your sleep, hereĘźs my best advice to you: adjust your expectations. Unrealistic expectations about the sleep process can disturb your sleep just as surely as a stressful lifestyle, consuming excess caffeine, or late-night computer use. Realistic expectations allow the natural sleep process to unfold smoothly and bring you all the natural, restful sleep you need. In over a decade of experience as a sleep trainer and coach, the most prevalent unrealistic expectation IĘźve encountered is that sleep is a continuous, one-way process. Many troubled sleepers believe they are supposed to lay their heads on the pillow, close their eyes, and slide straight down into deep, unconscious sleep. Now, itĘźs true that a few gifted sleepers may experience this, but that really is a sweet illusion rather than reality. Falling asleep, whether weĘźre aware of it or not, is really more of a rollercoaster than a slide. In the process, brain activity alternates several times between quiet waking to light sleep. Little by little, the waking is phased out and deeper, more continuous sleep prevails. During those periods of light sleep, weĘźre unaware. But each time we shift back into quiet waking, partial awareness returns. And thatĘźs where the sleep rollercoaster often goes off the rails. Not realizing that those brief, partial awakenings are perfectly normal and necessary, we falsely assume that sleep has eluded us. Worse, we allow the resulting frustration to awaken us even further. Living In Oneness â&#x20AC;&#x201C; The Secret Key By Laurie URI Grant What I am about to reveal to you I received in an ongoing state of Oneness Non-Duality (a state of being one with everything including the Divine). As a privileged witness, I could see beyond the illusion of separation which allowed me to see the larger truth affecting each of us and all of humanity. And with that awareness, we create a life of grace, joy and blessings.

The superconscious – connected to a greater reality – allows us to experience deeper wisdom, profound peace, a sense of oneness. Living From Your Heart Every Day Is The Answer

By Anne Rice Fulfillment, creativity and passion come from one source - your heart. Living from your heart every day is the answer. This is easy to say, but sounds like another spiritual platitude unless grounded in experience. To be real, it must be felt and embodied. When I began meditating years ago, I started with a simple â&#x20AC;&#x153;watch your thoughtsâ&#x20AC;? approach, always coming back to the breath. I stuck with it for some time, even though for long periods on the cushion IĘźd forget I was meditating and daydream about people, places, conversations and anything else the old thought generator could conjure up. Eventually I realized it was time to try something else. I wanted something more tangible than the breath to come back to. I wanted to sink my teeth into something real, an internal presence that I could feel morphing my thoughts and emotions into clarity. After years of searching for this inner experience, I found the teachers and training that led the excavation into the intelligence of my heart. What I learned during my â&#x20AC;&#x153;unearthingâ&#x20AC;? is that sustained well-being cannot be found in a tincture bottle or a text book. The heart center holds the secret. Once uncovered, the heart center produces a strong electromagnetic field that has the capacity to draw synchronicities, manifest a higher reality, and bring spiritual alignment. It heals emotional wounds, clarifies thoughts, strengthens health and mends relationships. The heart holds a timeless, non-linear form of intelligence that lives underneath thought forms and emotional needs. And it provides an elixir that we all long to drink from: love. Love is the doorway into the heartĘźs intelligence. Within the feeling texture of love is the highest form of insight and comprehensive truth. It is the development of receptive stillness in this feeling that opens one to hear, see, feel and know this stream of communication beneath the clatter of thoughts. The challenge for the majority of us is to learn to access this state when our mind and emotions are busy putting on a production that steals the show. Once again, the heart has the answer. It not only provides the insight and communicates its high intelligence whenever we are able to receive it, it offers a place for us to release our burdens when we are out of touch. Surrendering all states of mind and emotion into the embrace of the heart relaxes one into an ongoing flow of release and deeper immersion in love. As a result, creativity, passion and fulfillment become a way of life. A simple practice: when emotions surface, open your heart and embrace them. When needs go unmet, fill up from the wellspring of your heart. When thoughts are cloudy, bow your head to your lucid heart. When you need anything, ask your heart and wait. By Debbie Dehm The other day, someone asked me if I follow my guidesʼ advice and I have to say, yes, I usually do. Sometimes this is easy, like when they tell me to slow down when I am driving and in the next mile there is an accident in front of me. Sometimes it is harder to follow, like one night I was watching TV and they said “Shut the TV off, we want to talk to you.” OK. So I did and they said, “You are going to open your own massage practice, and sell supplements, and teach reiki, and create a space your friends can just drop in to chat.” I said, “Oh really? Why should I do that and go into debt when I just paid off all my credit cards and am doing OK the way things are?” My guides said, “Do it anyway and we will help you.” And I said, “Well, youʼd better because I have never owned my own business before and this is a big leap of faith.” Within a month I had a location rented, a bank loan, inventory and my first computer. I had my own business for five years and it was one of the most rewarding things I have ever done. I paid off the loan and made a profit and my guides did help me. I now tell people that the bigger the leap of faith, the better the reward. I continue to follow my guidance. My main guide now is the Goddess Quan Yin and she has taught me so much about compassion, healing and patience. She is always with me and that is very comforting and I try to live my life as she would. Follow your guidance. It is worth it!

By Nancy Friedrich People sometimes wonder why they should learn about shamanism. Isnʼt it something from yesteryear or more like yester-century? Of course, it is true that the roots of shamanism are ancient, but the beauty of it is that it has an ageless presence and ability to be relevant for any person, regardless of language, location or the times in which they live or lived. As evolving human beings, it is true that the problems we need to solve are not the same as those of our ancestors. Yet, the shamanic method of journeying is just as effective for modern people as it was for them. The answers that are given in the journey process are typically applicable in stunningly precise ways. It also offers us a way to deepen our relationships with the living energies that are always around us as we learn to communicate with the spiritual powers in nature and beyond. Shamanism has been referred to as a form of “ecstasy” because it is a joy whenever one has a firsthand experience – the feeling and knowing firsthand of the interconnectedness of everything. It is not an intellectual understanding nor is it faith or a religion – it is a form of direct revelation. If you would like to have a way to directly experience the sacred, you may discover that this method resonates well with you. As we awaken to the awesome beauty and deep spiritual power of all of nature, our respect and reverence is deepened for all life. In these times, that value is inherently protective of our beautiful home, creating balance for self and for all of life.

Stop So You Can Start

I had been tweaking and perfecting a business plan. The process consumed my time and my thoughts. The New Year brings about more of this immobilization as we plan our resolutions and solutions to the problems that have plagued us - the money we need to save, the weight we want to lose, the relationship we are searching for, the job that will make us happy. How do you live life to the fullest every day if you are waiting for everything to be in order before you start? You canĘźt. That is why you should stop waiting to reward yourself, stop denying yourself your emotions, stop berating yourself for your shortcomings. Taking this one step will free up your mind and your time. The art of living is enjoying the process along the way. You will rejoice when you can fit into your â&#x20AC;&#x153;skinny pants,â&#x20AC;? but allow yourself to enjoy the time spent in your workout, knowing that you are one more day closer to your goal. Rejoice in preparing yourself mentally for that new relationship. Be happy with the realization that they are out there and on their way to you in time. Living From Your Soul-Self

By Danijela Hembal Anxious or faithful, self-defeating or self-loving, shy or courageous â&#x20AC;&#x201C; is it all just a decision? Yes! You have the power to decide how you want to feel! The quality of your thoughts and feelings is linked to your identification. Are you looking at life out of the consciousness of the role you took on in life, or through the eyes of your soul? Are you living your life from your â&#x20AC;&#x153;egoselfâ&#x20AC;? or from your â&#x20AC;&#x153;soul-selfâ&#x20AC;?? The ego-self is built up from the realities and influences of your immediate surroundings, forming, deforming and redefining itself over and over again. Therefore, it is dependent on its environment. Through external achievements the ego-self feels brilliant. However, if success tumbles, it breaks down. This can quickly lead to self-doubt, pain, shame, fear and frustration, even depression. The soul-self is nothing less than your divine origin. Her innate wisdom recognizes every mind-trap, every conversational and emotional misinformation. Whatever messages it gets from the external world, the soul-self never forgets about her holiness. Nothing and nobody can bring her out of her internal peace; it stays independent. Now, ask yourself, â&#x20AC;&#x153;Which self do I want to live?â&#x20AC;? Bhakti Fest Sets Spring Event By Shannon Skillern and Janet Marley Bhakti, the Sanskrit word for devotion or connection to God, can be an intimidating concept even for experienced yoga practitioners, if not for its religious associations, for its scriptural context within the ancient mythology of the Bhagavad Gita. Bhakti Fest is a four-day celebration of around-the-clock kirtan, yoga, workshops and the healing arts held in Joshua Tree, California. This year, the third annual Bhakti Fest will take place September 8-11, 2011. Connection Is The Key

By Paul Gangnier When I think of the words â&#x20AC;&#x153;Art of Living,â&#x20AC;? I immediately think of connection. Connection moves us toward inner growth, expanding our consciousness. Connection to the parts in our lives, in my opinion, is what life is all about. The parts I refer to are everything we experience in our lives like our work, play, family, friends, beliefs, bodies, homes, art, hobbies, etc., and include emotions like love and anger, or senses such as smell, taste, touch. There is an inherent need in each of us to truly and completely connect with every part brought to us. Each part is directly manifested within our awareness by us, thereby granting us personally-customized lessons. These life lessons are why we are here. The connection is the key because to connect fully and completely means we have achieved each critical step meant for us to learn. Each part/lesson follows the same pattern: the need for experience, manifestation of the part, experience the part, and then growth into complete connection. Once we completely connect and accept each part, that particular experience and energy lesson is released. This is the time to allow ourselves to grow into beings that are full of the awareness of what is real. We can then acknowledge that every experience is manifested by us for us. The simple act of completely embracing each and every part of our lives with love and understanding will release, over time, all parts and lessons, setting us free from human experience. To free ourselves we must open with intention, allow source to guide us, expand our awareness, release negative attachments, fully connect to each part/lesson, and transcend to our God-selves. Finding Your Silent Observer

By Gene Teglovic Regardless of your personal view of meditation or spiritual beliefs, the act of quieting the mind with regular meditation can result in amazing physical and emotional benefits. In addition to relaxing the body and calming the mind, a regular meditation practice can put you in touch with that part of yourself that is not your body or your mind: the silent observer. This part of you is connected to the source of all life and creation. Regular contact with your silent observer allows you to glimpse into that divine essence on a regular basis and bring the power of creation in line with your lifeʼs purpose. Many people think they canʼt meditate, that their minds are too active or they canʼt sit still for long. They simply donʼt see the need, or think they are “doing it wrong” and give up. This is often because they look at meditation as a means to an end (a measurable amount of peace, for example), rather than just a simple way of “be-ing” with oneself and spirit. There are hundreds of meditation methods. Some are simple, and others elaborate. Some are silent and still, while others incorporate sights, sounds, movement, earth elements, and other aids. “Mindfulness” meditation is easy to learn, and a 20-minute session per day is all it takes to begin to see some related improvements in your life. A simple meditation process has no right or wrong associated with it. There is no goal or expected result. Learning to meditate introduces you to an easy way of observing your thoughts and being with yourself for a short period of time. And to get an occasional glimpse into spirit. Please help. - Barbara, Ontario Dear Barbara, On an intellectual level, this is easy – you just have to let go of your attachment to this guy. But letting go is usually easier said than done! He is seriously (and understandably) conflicted, which makes him emotionally unavailable for the kind of connection you want. If he is to break his marriage agreement, it should be solely of his own volition, not yours. So there is nothing for you to do but let go. You have developed a strong emotional attachment and, unfortunately, like the high from a drug, youʼre going to have to get over it – and you will – sooner or later. Withdrawals are not fun, but hopefully you will come out of it learning a lesson about the importance of availability. No matter the reasons, getting hooked by an unavailable person is a formula for pain. Iʼm sorry about the pain, but you need to get on with it and go through the withdrawals and, in the process, free yourself to look elsewhere. When someone is unavailable – for any reason, physical or emotional – thereʼs hardly ever anything you can do about it, but learn to choose more carefully in the future. All relationship-seekers need to learn to make “Is he/she available?” the first question they ask themselves. Sex, Fertility And Ayurveda

By Jackie and Dave Reed Fertility and the joy of giving and receiving sexual pleasure are as ancient as mankind. Ayurveda was the first form of medicine to address Erectile Dysfunction (ED) or impotency, and its approach is as valuable today as it was thousands of years ago. Numerous factors can affect male virility: diabetes, obesity, depression, neurological conditions, high blood pressure, and prescription medication. An estimated 10 to 20 million American men suffer from varying degrees of ED. Ayurveda has a safe and time-tested approach to male virility. Nourishing foods are recommended and aphrodisiac herbs (vajikarana) are essential for male reproductive health. WomenĘźs sexual satisfaction is very complex and multifaceted. They experience greater sexual satisfaction when they are in an amorous mood, pain free and relieved of stress or demands of their time. That â&#x20AC;&#x153;loveâ&#x20AC;? is one of the most important tools to also skillfully explore the art of living. It is the love of self. It relaxes us and allows us to expand into more â&#x20AC;&#x153;colors of the rainbowâ&#x20AC;? in our lives.

But what if we donĘźt feel that love for ourselves and our lives? We are lucky to live in HawaiĘźi. It gives us the gift of the wonderful word â&#x20AC;&#x153;Aloha,â&#x20AC;? which is much more than just a greeting. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Alohaâ&#x20AC;? also expresses love, kindness, respect and appreciation. When spoken to someone else, it declares to that person that s/he is safe with us .
