Just in the past couple of months: Shell pulled the plug on drilling for oil in the Arctic; New York’s Attorney General announced that he would issue subpoenas to Exxon after leakers disclosed the company knew of climate change for 30 years; President Obama canceled the Keystone pipeline!; and the Governor of the Bank of England warned insurance companies of “huge risks” from “unburnable carbon” that would become “stranded assets” (lost investments). On the GMO front: Monsanto’s stock value plunges as farmers flee high-priced poisons, and the company announces it will lay off 2,600 workers; 19 of 28 EU countries choose to keep GMOs out of their countries; Mexican judge upholds ban on planting GM maize; U.S. court rules in favor of the bees against Dow’s neonicotinoid pesticides. Closer to home: Hawaiian activists have delayed construction of the Thirty Meter Telescope on Mauna Kea; Maui activists have slowed the telescope project atop Haleakala; 10,000 attended the Aloha Aina Unity March in Honolulu, and half that number marched two months later in Lahaina; and Stop Cane Burning filed a lawsuit against the Hawaii Department of Health and Maui sugar company, HC&S. Might all of the activism and informed knowledge be making a difference? Let’s take a closer look at challenges to the Keystone XL pipeline. demanding a halt to an insane project to deliver thick tar sand sludge to ports on the Gulf Coast for export to Europe and China. Three cheers for Bill McKibben, the fearless leader of 350.org who organized the demonstrations at the White House. He credits three factors to Obama’s decision to cancel the project: multiplying everywhere and in-your-face activism; the “relentless spread of a new logic about the planet – that we have five times as much carbon in our reserves as we can safely burn”; and the dramatic decrease in the price of solar panels – down 80 percent in six years. Ye s , t h e Koch Brothers, Exxon, Shell and the gang will continue to misinform the public and pay legislators to do their bidding, but in truth, political power has shifted and “people power” is on the rise. The Kochs will put close to a billion dollars into the 2016 races; but, 750,000 people have donated to the Sanders presidential campaign and the election is still one year away. Hurray for better informed activists and donors! At the same time, activism in Hawaii has never been stronger. Sovereignty issues have grown stronger as the next generation takes up the cause. It seems that the SHAKA Movement put a shock into
the collective psyche when over 23,000 demanded Monsanto prove their experiments are safe. Our corporate-sponsored government couldn’t catch a break, as that was followed by demonstrations against the telescopes, followed by the Stop Cane Burning uprising. It was the lawsuit that Stop Cane Burning forces filed, however, that has gotten the attention of the honchos at A&B headquarters. On November 6, The Maui News had a long report about lost profits and a discussion of alternate crops by the plantation that hopes to hang on to water rights and land. Apparently, the company plans to make an announcement soon about those plans that have been in development for decades; and this time, the COO allowed that changes “could include a decision that we’re transitioning out of sugar to a new business model.” It’s true that nothing gets the attention of the executive suite as fast as a lawsuit. After all, A&B offices in Honolulu are far away from their caneburning harvest process which causes pesticideladen ash and smoke to drift into nearby Kihei neighborhoods. So stand up and take a bow – it is you and your continued attention to the issues, and your willingness to keep showing up, demonstrating, testifying and sharing knowledge, that makes the difference. Without doubt, there has been a profound shift in consciousness around the earth, all over our state, and in this county. We are on the brink of disaster and breakthrough. Distilling The Truth
What is the Truth? To celebrated psychic medium James Van Praagh, the ultimate truth is that we are all composed of one crazy little thing called Love. New Business Blossoms Distilling Local Botanicals

By Lelle Once upon a time it was common to have a stillroom within the home. In these rooms they would preserve everything from meats and fermentations, to distilled botanicals and spirits. It wasn’t until rumors of witchcraft, prohibition, shortages, and the rise of modern medicine that domestic distilling became somewhat taboo and misunderstood. Thankfully, there is a renaissance within our society for self-sustainability. We are once again turning back to nature for aroma and plant-based wellness. My personal connection to nature began during my childhood. I was raised in a forest surrounded by orange groves. As a little girl, some of my first dreams were of perfume. In the late winter, the cool night air would saturate with the intoxicating aroma of blooming heirloom orange blossoms. My mother would encourage me to take deep breaths with her, and say, “Smell the perfume, Michelle? The air is perfume.” I was six years old when I first attempted to make my first perfume out of dried roses and water. When I was ten, I won first prize in the science fair for oil densities. Throughout the years, my experiments with making my own bath and beauty products expanded. My first time extracting oils, I fell in love; and I have been passionate about expanding my knowledge to share with others ever since. Learning how to distill was, and still is, much like the Wild West. Most people think of alcohol when they hear the word distilling, but using a distiller to extract essential oils is vastly different. Many of the historical documented books on distilling are unavailable or, at best, hard to decipher. Information on the Internet mainly provides information on steam, not hydrodistillation; so vintage books have become my bibles on the subject. In addition to a lack of information, major companies have created a belief that modern steam and stainless is the only way to produce a quality oil. In the commercial marketplace, many believe in the words “therapeutic grade oils” – in my opinion, this is a relative term. I believe there is nothing more therapeutic or eloquent than harvesting local botanicals, and using distillate and essential oil from your very own still. Many companies will lead you to believe that you808.269.2923 need their brand of a Call certain botanical because they are the only ones with access and knowledge to properly extract the essence. In most cases, this is only partially true. Although there are rare oils such as Organic Hawaiian Sandalwood that only has one sustainable source, the vast majority of botanicals have many sources for us to explore. Telling me I must purchase a mass-produced oil for it to have benefits is like telling me that I will only get nutrients from my food if it is prepared by a professional chef. I believe there is a value for both professional and domestic-distilled oils. In truth, if you can cook, you can distill. In the United States, you need a permit to make alcohol; however, distilling essential oils is legal. When choosing a distiller, one has many options – glass, copper, stainless and ceramic. As long as I’ve been distilling, I’ve found that no two distillers will agree on a perfect method of extraction. It’s a constant journey of exploration, and herein lies the romance, artistry and fun. In the coming months, we shall explore different Hawaiian botanicals and methodologies of extracting, and how to incorporate them into your wellness regimen. (Note: We do not distill alcohol and will not provide any information or resources for anyone on the subject.) Tell The Truth, Remember Less
By Liah Howard While sitting in the dining hall of the local senior center one morning, I heard an older whitehaired gentleman say, “I’ve learned that if I always tell the truth, I never have to remember what I said.” He smiled, and the wisdom of his many years shone through his kind eyes, framed with soft wrinkles. How very simple his statement was, yet how challenging it is for many of us to live a truly honest life. Young children usually respond honestly when asked a question, and this frank innocence can be trained out of them. Children who are shamed for making mistakes, punished harshly, or witness their parents lying, can learn to color, hide or obscure the truth. They learn to lie to protect the self or not hurt another person, but their deception usually has the opposite effect. As adults, they enter into relationships, jobs and life, and the fundamental value of honesty is missing even though they believe they tell the truth. To reclaim their true voice demands courage, self-love and self-respect. They must learn to ask for the truth from others, and to offer that same gift in return. As a psychic, I often see clients who want to find out the truth about their partners or employees. These clients have a gut feeling that they have been betrayed (they may have seen texts from a partner’s lover or had money go missing), but they don’t have the courage to honestly confront the individual concerned. Fear of loss or hurt often inhibits people from digging deeper to find out the truth. Lack of honesty in relationships usually
indicates that a chasm is already present between the people involved. This energetic barrier can be felt, too, if secrets are withheld. My council of guides from the higher realms always reminds me that no one asks a question until they are ready for the answer. This desire to know the truth comes after experiencing enough pain, and when the person is ready to make a change. The truth is always easier to deal with than the fear of the unknown. Once the truth comes to the surface, then appropriate decisions can be made.

When one person is willing to reveal their heart’s truth to another, then healing is possible. The Blind Leads The Blind

We assume the ground will be solid beneath our feet, we expect the traffic light to change, we know the ocean will be wet when we jump in. If we make the mistake of drawing a conclusion that is inaccurate, the awakening is often eye-opening, and sometimes memorable. While attending college, I had the golden opportunity to intern at Perkins School for the Blind, which boasts Helen Keller amongst its alumni. The Perkins experience immersed me into a “state of gratitude,” by allowing me to witness deaf and blind students embracing life with unbridled enthusiasm and confidence. Teaching art classes to such happy, active kids in this environment was a dream. Having permission to use the teachers’ lounge was particularly novel, and the faculty was warm and welcoming with the exception of one teacher – “The Knitter.” She was friendly to everyone but me, and had animated conversations while her needles flew over her intricate project. It was unnerving to be excluded, but that changed a week later when everyone left the lounge and the two of us were alone. She looked at me and said, “We have not been properly introduced, but I know you are here. I recognize you by your perfume. I am happy to finally meet you!” In a flash I realized “The Knitter” was completely blind. It never occurred to me as she had memorized the number of steps, each piece of furniture, the location of every class; and she moved with fluid grace. My assumption was derailed! The extreme changes, disasters and wars we see right now seem to prove the opposite, creating hopelessness and stress, and fueling a negative morphogenetic field built up from centuries of negative events, thinking and beliefs. The truth is, we are not victims. The other truth is, the world is not shifting by itself. I Just Have To Love You… And I Do By Dr. DreamingBear I’ve always been a poet at heart; not a politician or a priest, but a poet. This has gotten me into trouble on occasion. My grandmother was a wise Native woman who understood ‘no-nonsense love’ on a profound level. When I acted out of ignorance or willful disobedience, she would say, “Baby, I don’t have to understand you. I just have to love you … and I do.” This approach proved to be invaluable when I was diagnosed with Asperger’s Syndrome. Her kindness helped me out of autism’s social-distortions, with an unconditional love that acknowledges a soul’s innate goodness and beauty, notwithstanding the ‘gaps’ in one’s personality. Then I understood it comes naturally when I’m able to love myself that way, too. When I moved to Maui, I was awestruck that herein was a community that appeared to be nonjudgmental to that same extent – a magical place where everyone could be themselves without fear of being derailed publicly for not fitting in. Now, after years in the conscious community, I have also experienced the shadow of this Maui Family. I discovered the flip side of paradise, where people are kind to your face but brutal behind your back. In my case, I received extreme criticism from people who believed I was faking my spinal injury, despite my MRIs and having had fusion surgery. I entered into numerous open relationships with women and was candid about it, only to have these lovers become ‘haters’ and threaten to destroy me publicly for honoring my freedom. Finally, naysayers attacked me when I obtained a Ph.D. and used ‘Dr.’ as a performance title like Dr. Dre. This ultimately led to feelings of sadness and being an outcast in my own community. It wreaked havoc on my autistic-mystic heart. I’ve
responded with as much grace as I can, with apologies for any unintended pain caused. All of this coincided with my Pluto transit, a time for shedding old patterns. How do we remain loving to ‘haters’? That’s where the wisdom is – being a lover no matter what. We inspire people to be themselves, by being ourselves unapologetically. We, the conscious community, have a profound opportunity to stop taking each other and ourselves so seriously, and to discontinue judging and criticizing one another. We all bring our shadows to paradise with us, but our innocent core remains intact regardless of external opinions. What truly matters most is the purity of this human beating heart, and whether the purity of yours can reflect that. I have learned that expectations are a form of premeditated resentment, and it takes vulnerability to risk it all by being authentically open in the public eye. I aspire to not take attacks personally, but the truth is, I’m human and sometimes I do. What I would like to say is, please forgive me for my mistakes, and I forgive you for our collective inconsistencies towards kindness. I wish we could all love each other the way grandmas do, with as much soft wisdom. Take it from the poet of imperfection; we evolve together and no one should have to give a qualifier for that. Developing Your Visionary Potential
By Paul O’Brien Both businesses I founded had “Visionary” in their names – Visionary Software and Visionary Networks. Now we have the Visionary I Ching app. From the start of my entrepreneurial career, I called myself “Chief Visionary Officer,” because I saw myself primarily as an inventor. Obviously, the word “visionary” has long packed meaning and power for me. Nowadays, it has become a fashionable word, if only for marketing. Wr i t i n g m y b o o k , G re a t Decisions, Perfect Timing, made me wonder if the visionary capacity – including an ability to practice my Visionary Decision-Making (VDM) processes – is really available to everyone. It starts with holding to a vision that can “inspire you to take the risks that grow you when the timing is right.” VDM is simply beyond many people because most people are too busy and distracted to think outside the box of their beliefs! In truth, a highly visionary capacity is available to everyone … eventually. I wrote the book to serve both those who are already becoming intuitively adept and those who want to. Each of us certainly has a capacity for vision, even if few of us dissolve the box of our thinking. How can you develop your visionary capacity? Well, for one thing, you can improve your skill at envisioning novel results by practicing active imagination. In other words, “think different” … and think bigger. That’s how I created the first interactive divination software (which culminated in Tarot.com, I-Ching.com, and now the Visionary I Ching app). My book shows how to channel and focus Creative Power – the archetype that is the first hexagram of the I Ching. This is divine power resource that is always there for you. Through active imagination, dreams and daydreams, Creative Power generates insights and visions. As the nursery school rhyme chants, “life is but a dream.” Yes, but it is a dream that you are creating with and for yourself. Surround yourself with experiences or people that inspire you, like favorite music, time with a loved one, or a quiet meditation with nature. Doing what inspires you will cultivate intuitive intelligence and creative powers. You might ask: How do I be sure that my vision is real, rather than wishful thinking or fantasies of my ego? In order to be sure that a vision is in alignment with who you are at depth, you can use the “heart-check” method. A trustworthy vision will connect mind, heart and soul. For some, success takes the form of a harmonious and loving family life. For others, it could translate into a strong sense of mission or purpose related to one’s vocation, or some competitive victory on behalf of a partnership, family, tribe, or the entire world. As we move toward a more evolved society that spawns dreams of greater creative freedom, the ability to formulate and realize the visionary capacity becomes more essential for individuals and society. Developing your visionary potential and increasing creative freedom is part of your legacy to future generations. As we cultivate intuitive intelligence and evolve toward our greatest human potential, we make it easier for all those who follow us. This is the path of healing the planet as well as ourselves. You’ll Need A Truth Map For 2016
By Ann Paquin At the beginning of a new year, many of us reflect upon where we’ve been, where we want to go, and what we need to do to get there. Sometimes we become frustrated that we haven’t made enough progress towards our highest potential. If we feel doubt rather than confidence in our chosen direction, it’s likely we have only a partial map of the Truth in our subconscious. So this coming year, how can you make and sustain the progress you’ve always been wanting? You’ll need a Truth map. Three Truth maps include the Enneagram, Resonance Healing®, and Integral Theory. Each offers effective tools addressing psychological, spiritual and social development. Each has helped me become more present and energetic, recognize shadow, and greatly expand my intuitive capacities. The partial maps of our individual personality structures tend to guide our subconscious. Truth maps help connect us to the greater Truth, offering accelerated transformation. Truth maps recognize our own and others’ worthiness. They identify gifts as well as blind spots. Energetically and physically, we expand with Truth and contract with incongruence. Emotions can reflect how close we are to Truth. After a good laugh or cry, an impulse, blessing or clarity of Truth arises. We all have a Truth map within us. Our internal Truth map is revealed when we follow our highest priority Truths to make the healthiest decisions. We do this by paying attention, using effective tools, and practicing meditation. You will know you’ve found a reliable map when you experience big changes and you are eager to practice. You will wish you had the tools 20 years earlier. You will feel aligned. You will experience deep kindness and compassion towards yourself and all sentient beings. You will feel joy and confidence in knowing you are living your purpose. New Awakenings Abound!
By Judy Levy A sudden turn of events forced the premature closure of Maui’s only metaphysical center, which had become a welcome convergence zone and event and gathering location for our spiritual community. Over the last two years, Awakening in Paradise provided a forum for over 100 authors and teachers from all over the country. As a person who has been on the path of truth and inner knowing for 40 years, I take responsibility for everything that happens in my life. I have personally experienced – even in times of “crisis” – that absolutely everything happens for our highest good. As the blessed steward of Awakening in Paradise, I recognize that I made many mistakes and errors in judgment, which contributed to the sad eventuality that we only had the shop for two years. Additionally, locating in a center run by an absentee corporate entity proved to be challenging; but I grew a lot and I celebrate it all! We had the most glorious team of lightworkers greeting all of our blessed visitors. Much life-changing work occurred within those walls. Twenty-six holistic practitioners – all part of the ohana – offered much healing and made a difference for thousands of people in only two years. I am so grateful to everyone who graced our presence. By Lila Danielle “You can’t handle the truth.” - Jack Nicholson’s character, Colonel Jessup, in A Few Good Men Sometimes, I agree with Jack. Sometimes, I can’t handle the truth because it not only overwhelms me, it appears overwhelmingly distressing of late and makes me feel there’s not a damn thing I can do about changing it. What truth am I talking about here? It’s a truth we don’t want to admit. It’s a truth that’s unavoidable and ugly. It’s a truth that’s hard to handle because it hurts. We are not one. We are not united. We are an island, a state, a country and a world that is becoming more disconnected from each other. We are angry. We are righteous. We are divided. Another young, white man shot his way through a community college I once attended to make headlines and make us shake our heads again. A reality TV show billionaire with no prior political experience is currently the leading candidate for the Republican Party. On any given day on Facebook, posts point the finger at something or someone else who is responsible for why the world is a messed up place. As long as we continue to believe there is an “other” and that we’re better than someone who is different from us, we will remain self-aggrandizing and separate. Whether you’re liberal or conservative, you’re one. Whether you’re vegan or an omnivore, you’re one. Whether you’re Christian or Muslim, you’re one. Whether you’re white or brown, you’re one. Whether you’re heterosexual or gay, you’re one. You are not better than…(insert whomever you most dislike). You are different and…you are the same. One humanity. One Earth. One truth. We are one. How do we handle this truth? By seeing each other not as “other,” but as the one who stares back at you when you look into the mirror. Finding Your Truth

Many people find comfort and a sense of belonging through religion, each with its own dogma and interpretation of the truth. However, there is more. God is real, and you can go to God directly to receive the truth into your spirit. God has made these truths available through many avenues and given us the free will to choose what is right for us. We hear our inner voice after we are trained to listen to it. Through meditation, we can know God on a personal level and receive the truths that are right for our soul. Passing The Anniversary Of My Future Death Day
By Bodhi Be Every year I pass the anniversary day of my future death day. I will die and I don’t know when. I have come to view this as a beautiful truth. Its companion truth is that we do not die. Both are truths, though one I know and the other I’m learning to know. Nature shows me that life needs death to live; that the green plants that feed us grow from soil filled with dead things – dead plants, dead animals, dead people. Rebirth requires death. I’m not in any hurry, but I look forward to feeding the community of life. Meanwhile, I’m working to feed that community through the ways I live my life. I discovered a long time ago that time was more valuable than money; that a spiritual life of love, service and remembrance was the life worth living. More recently, I discovered that my life doesn’t belong to me. It belongs to the community of life, and I accept that I’ll never be able to give back to that community as much as it has given and continues to give me. But I’ll try. I live in awe of all that had to happen in order for me to have it this good, even though it’s not always easy. Going back in time, I think of the ancestors who came before me who, often in the face of tremendous adversity and setbacks, continued on. They may not have wanted to go on, but maybe they saw all of us – their children, grandchildren and great grandchildren – and that was how they could go on. I feel their blessings on me and I work on their behalf as well. I carry the responsibility that has been placed in my arms by the ancestors, much like a sacred bundle, until I pass it forward to the next generations. My dying, too, will in some way feed the community. We have seen so many ways people die badly, and many of us have not seen dying at all. We need to learn what dying means and what it asks of us. We need our children to know about dying. Something seems to happen to most of us when we find out someone we know is dying or has died. That ‘something’ usually shifts our awareness into a more fragile, delicate place. Much of what seemed so important becomes so less important. We step into the rawness and precariousness of how it actually is. Now, seeing our friends and family with different eyes, we often realize that love is the only thing that truly matters. That’s a truth. We open to the truth that any time we see or speak with someone, may be our last encounter with that person. We open to the truth that we don’t have time for laziness and procrastination. We stop taking for granted that we have a lot more time. The awareness of our approaching death has the potential to shape and direct our lives in ways that make ‘conscious living’ and a relationship with the ‘holy’ a possibility. Can you imagine coming to love (not just accept) the truth that you will die? And, too, that your dying and how you die could be a great gift to your people?

What’s The Truth?
By Maribeth Theisen We all want to know the Truth, to depend on it and organize our lives around it. As we get older, we find our beliefs about what is ‘true’ or real change, especially our political or religious beliefs. On an interpersonal level, our true lover may leave, our true friends may not keep agreements, or worse, they may backstab us. If we were clinging to our beliefs and resistant to the reality of a constantly changing universe, the new reality emerging could create chaos as we readjust our thinking to new situations. Is there Absolute Truth? Philosophers and theologians have debated this question for millennia. What is accepted to be universally true has changed throughout history; Medieval people knew the earth was flat and bathing created illness. Parents in the 1950s knew the best parenting was to leave their babies to cry behind closed doors. It’s all changed! In the Japanese film, Rashomon, a stranger listens as a woodcutter and priest share a shocking story about a murder trial at which they appeared as witnesses. A notorious bandit had tied up a samurai and raped his wife. The woodcutter discovered the body. How did the samurai die? Strangely, all involved claimed responsibility. The bandit described winning a dramatic sword fight. The rape victim admitted she accidentally stabbed her husband. A medium voiced the deceased’s claims his wife’s treachery drove him to suicide. The woodcutter, claiming to be a witness, tells a fourth wild version. The stranger gleans his own perspective. Moviegoers passionately believe one set of facts, only to be convinced of another. What should you do? Stay open-minded; your truth might change. Allow others to believe their truths as they do and love them anyway. The Healing Power Of The Sacred
By Eli Jaxon-Bear I’ve been asked: What do the different paths to the Sacred have in common? Can we call that transcendent force by our rites and rituals? Is healing sacred? What all religions, rites and paths have in common is that they all eventually lead to a dead end. There is no path, rite or religion that will bring you face to face with the divine. This happens through grace, and uses whatever circumstances – mundane or “holy” – that might present themselves. As humans, we search for miracles. Whether trying to communicate with dead spirits or invoking sacred rites, we want to bring something extraordinary into our lives. In truth, the world is sacred as it is. This manifestation is a miracle! To approach the sacred, we must take no steps at all. Religion is an attempt to try to get something from God, or to control some holy force for our own benefit, or to save ourselves from death. The great trap of rites and religions is that it gives the ego an excuse to do something to try and get something. In that we lose the sacred and the divine, and end up with dogma, beliefs and practices, in the hopes of making the divine appear and do something for us. We search for the divine in all the wrong places. We go on pilgrimages, or practice magical rites or holy mantras, or search for the next teacher that comes to town. The divine sacredness is what is alive and looking out through each of our eyes. It is the sacredness within that projects out on to the world and searches for itself and sees itself in sacredness. When we are called from within, we must give everything to this calling, regardless of circumstance. Fully following the calling of your heart is the ultimate medicine, the final healing, the ending of all wounds. However, many of us are fixated not on our heart, but on our body; not on bliss, but on pleasure. We want to heal the body, perfect the body, and make it more beautiful, more healthy, more spiritual. This is why yoga has become mainstream in a large part of our culture. It is a relatively healthy way to work with the body. The trap is in the quest. To make the body more supple, more healthy, more spiritual, becomes the quest of the spiritual ego. You are sacred as you are. If you are willing to stop long enough, to be still long enough, to not move into thinking and doing long enough, your sacred nature will reveal itself in silence. By Doug Price, D.C. Life experiences – good or bad – occur because of the tracks that control your thinking and doing. Hearing the word “tracks” may give you a picture of railroad tracks. But in the context of German New Medicine, “tracks” has a completely new and powerful meaning. To understand this life-changing concept more clearly, I will first explain the difference between “traits” and “tracks.” A “trait” is a psychological term; it refers to a certain type of behavior or characteristic a person exhibits. In contrast, a “track” is a subconscious reminder of what you have seen, heard, felt, smelled and tasted in relation to an unexpected trauma from your past that is stored in your psyche. An individual can radiate both light and dark qualities that are perceived in outward behavior. But unanticipated dramatic shocks have an effect on the level of the soul, and the lessons to be learned are not immediately obvious. The founder of this work, Dr. Hamer, wrote his first book in the 1980s. In Cancer: Diseases of the Soul, he explains that all diseases stem from an unexpected shock that catches us off guard, causing health issues and the inability to manifest what we want. For instance, parents want to make good decisions. And yet, what occurs in our environment influences our thinking through our psyche as “tracks.” This is why it is necessary for parents to clear tracks from any original conflicts – so that the soul of the parent can learn its lessons and clear the pathway to see the light of the truth in any situation. This can serve them greatly in raising their children.
By Cathleen McCandless So many myths and misunderstandings are associated with feng shui that it is often difficult to separate fact from fiction. Feng shui isn’t a religion, belief system, magic, or superstition. Feng shui is the study of the environment and how it affects people. Much more than a type of interior design, feng shui goes beyond how a space looks and addresses how it feels. Some of the most common feng shui myths concern the bathroom. A false notion in many feng shui circles is that the bathroom is a place of negative energy, and that the drains in the bathroom will somehow suck the money out of the house. This is completely untrue, and is actually a misinterpretation of guidelines that were established long before the use of indoor plumbing. When feng shui was established in ancient China, people eliminated in a hole in the ground. This area was considered to be very taboo (for obvious sanitary reasons), and there were specific guidelines as to where it should be located in relationship to the eating, sleeping and living areas of a dwelling. Just as we can’t imagine how bathrooms will be 5,000 years in the future, the ancient Chinese could not have foreseen modern plumbing and the bathrooms we have today. The strict guidelines and negative connotations that were once associated with the areas where people eliminated, are simply obsolete in modern homes with indoor plumbing. Keeping the bathroom clean and in top working order is much better feng shui than adhering to archaic beliefs, superstitions and rituals. When applied properly, feng shui can help you to create a home that inspires your mind, invigorates your body, and nurtures your spirit.

By Maurgana Stiastny Fatigue is a big complaint for a lot of people – even for those who sleep well and eat “right.” If you have low energy or fatigue, and you have been doing what you can with your diet but you are still struggling with exhaustion, digestive problems and inflammation, then you might need to look at hormones. Perhaps your adrenals are taxed. Our society encourages people to do, do, do and go, go, go. We are often rushing to and fro, with a laundry list of things we need to get done. With the holidays approaching, this gets turned up a notch. Your adrenals are small but very powerful glands that sit on top of your kidneys. They are the glands that release cortisol, which is a stress hormone. When we are stressed, our cortisol levels rise and we can experience fight or flight symptoms such as a rapid heart rate and shortness of breath. It can give us bursts of energy that would help us escape a potentially dangerous situation, such as being chased by a tiger. Even though we are not running from wild animals, our adrenals are working overtime. At times when we have a lot of stress in our lives, our cortisol levels can stay high when they should be low. That can cause trouble sleeping, adrenal exhaustion, or burnout. Taking adaptogenic herbs, which are herbs that help to moderate the stress response, can be helpful in supporting your adrenals. What Do You Choose For This Day? By Jenny Grace Shaw Another morning is here – complete with the sun shining, birds singing, roosters crowing, ocean waves crashing, and voices slowly coming alive. I lie here comforted by the familiarity of it all; yet tremble when that familiar question crosses my mind again – “what will I choose to do today?” I breathe deeply as my feet gently touch the floor, gaining their foundation in order to hold my body as I take my first step of the day. I stride slowly, as if any wrong step could disable my growing self-security. I remind myself to look forward, rather than down or behind. Looking at what’s directly
in front of me is analogous to how I will approach life. As I continue directing my whole self through each part of my day, I continually hear the question, “What do you choose?” How will today be mine to live, versus “theirs” to take possession of? I walk through my day and notice that our internal voices can be cruel, disarming and punishing. But is it really “our” voice that we hear? Do we really deliver such brutality through words smothered in disdain, while it seems everyone else lives freely? Am I really alone in this battle for authenticity? Do I deserve to live this day in health, as I so easily know the rest of the world deserves? Can you
hear my battle, or do you judge and keep walking as if you’ve never experienced such dilemmas? The day has now developed into the night I dreamt of this morning, and I am humbled by the precious peace within which I breathe. I take a few moments to reflect upon true empowerment, the ever-so-amazing loving grace growing inside, and welcoming life back within my reach. I remember how unsteady I was as I opened my eyes this morning. I recollect how those questions start and end my day again. Yes, I can expect them to show tomorrow upon my awakening. However, I am not afraid. I am secure in the gift of being human, not machine. I celebrate having emotions, no matter how intense or seemingly too scary for me to handle. Each day brings another opportunity to let go of what need not be a focus, and to humbly celebrate all that life presents on its terms, not mine. I cherish what I am gifted each day, as it is the remedy to self-punishment. I embrace all of my traits, for they are a part of me – the woman God created. I honor the process of growth and recovery in my life, no matter how imperfect. I am learning to let go of old punishing patterns and replace them with healthy alternatives, patience and empathy. I smile, knowing that I truly am not alone on this journey. I need not compare nor allow others to seduce my empowerment. I choose life! I choose a life to participate in, to share, to expand. I choose to let go of the “dis-eased” lifestyle, and to gently place one leg at a time into a “new pair of jeans” and begin my stride once again. I relish in the newfound wisdom that I am not my behaviors, my illnesses, or my dis-ease. I am just me. And I am okay. Help After Head Injury
By Erin Elster, D.C. Two possible mechanisms for brain injury result from blows to the head. The first, which most people are familiar with, is the striking of the brain against the inner skull. Because the brain floats in fluid inside the skull, sudden impacts may cause the brain to first strike one side of the skull and then the other, causing concussion symptoms. The second mechanism of injury, which is less commonly understood, is an injury sustained to the upper cervical (neck) spine. During a sudden blow, as an individual’s head snaps back-and-forth or side-to-side, supporting ligaments may be stretched, which forces the upper neck vertebrae out of their normal alignment with the base of the skull. Because so many nerves transmit through the upper neck – to and from the brain – injury to this area may slow or prevent the individual’s brain from healing from concussion. Common symptoms after concussion – which may be complicated by an upper neck injury –include memory loss, ‘brain fog,’ headaches, dizziness, sensitivity to bright light or loud noises, irritability, depression, and sleep disturbance. A chiropractic technique that focuses upon the alignment of the upper cervical vertebrae, known as upper cervical care, provides a unique approach for treatment after head injury. Upper cervical chiropractic care utilizes two diagnostic tools – thermal imaging and digital x-rays – to accurately assess an upper cervical injury. After determining a diagnosis of cervical injury, each patient’s injured neck is corrected by administering a precise adjustment by hand on a specially-designed knee chest table. To Find Truth Ask Questions

Much of this information comes from group consciousness that has been designed to influence our thinking. It is our responsibility to discern whether there is any merit to what is presented. I have learned to ask a series of questions to discern the truth. The first question is: Is what I am experiencing real, or is this just a figment of my imagination? In order to determine whether something is real, there are other questions to ask: Can this experience or information be duplicated? Will it stand the test of time? Do the principles that are being presented work on a consistent basis? If I choose to follow this information, will it serve me the rest of my life or is it just a flash in the pan fad? Is it worthwhile to follow the information presented? What is the long-term benefit of following this information? Will it serve as a foundation to build upon for my soul? Or is this just something that is designed to benefit the person or people who developed the information? What were the motives behind the information in the first place – money, controlling others, or a sincere desire to support the highest good? Is what I am learning or experiencing harmful? Will it harm my body, mind and soul? The last question is: Can what I am learning or experiencing be carried forward? The Real Truth

Surfing As Spiritual Practice By Kristina Mekdeci My church is the beach. When I look at the ocean and imagine how massive, unique, expansive and powerful it is, I know that only something with the same qualities could have created it: God. Whether on the beach or in church, you can learn so much by just watching, listening and observing. Still, none of it matters unless you take this knowledge and apply it in everyday life. Surfing is my connection to the Divine. Perhaps my affinity with water makes this relationship so religious. Water is an amazing substance. It can be changed dramatically by the environment, into many different forms – snow, ice, fog, clouds, hail and more. Water never resists the changes caused by the environment; rather, it just surrenders to what is happening and “goes with the flow.” As a surfer, I do the same. Surfers have no control over the ocean or the waves. As in life, some days are good and everything just falls into place. Other days are not so great, yet many surfers paddle out anyways. Some days are misleading; the conditions seem perfect, yet you surf poorly. Other days the conditions are so bad that you are the only surfer in the water, yet for some reason you have one of the best sessions of your life. In life, also, we have no control over what the conditions will be on any given day. All we can do is try our best and make the best of what is. Some people go to church, and I go to the beach. The Divine Resonance Effect By Patrick Bernard Creative artists are instruments of the divine and non-doers. The absolute divine acts through us to give us guidance and inspirations. We artists who use our voice need not generate it through the throat; rather, it naturally springs up from the bottom of one’s soul heart. Sound vibrations are carried away by ether-prana (the subtle energy that penetrates all elements of matter and spirit), and are always imbued with our deepest intentions. Sound vibrations, like sonic spiritual fingerprints, are simply the reflections of our inner truth. Our voice reflects our ideals, or our mood when we sing, play an instrument or recite a poem. Reciprocation occurs between the artist and the receptor-listener. It’s the universal law of the resonance effect. For instance, when the vibes of the voice come from the throat, they touch the throats of the listeners. When the voice comes from the gut, it touches the gut of the listener (as with rock music). When the sound comes from the intellect, it touches the intellect of the listener (as with jazz music). When the sound comes from the higher mind, it resonates with the higher mind of the listener (as with classical music and opera). However, when the waves of the sound come from the soul, they touch the souls of the listeners. As devotional artists, this is the effect we want. We want to vibrate the divine atma atom in the heart of the listeners – a resonance from a spark of God to a spark of God. The transcendental transmission that occurs creates spiritual transformation within the hearts of both the artist and the listener. How Do We “Let Go”?
By Rhonda Felix “Let go,” they softly encourage. In time, the softness can turn to a demand: “Let go!” Yikes! Letting go – of people, places or things – is the hardest thing I have had to come to terms with in this lifetime. Holding on is what I have done more often than not. And why do we hold on? We usually fear that what we have a hold on won’t come back. Or, we fear the ultimate anguish of being left alone! Letting go means change of one form or another – a change of people, places or things. This does not always have to be a physical letting go; it can also be an emotional letting go that involves moving into self-care. Self-care may not be easy to step into if you don’t have someone to role model it for you. It is almost impossible to take care of yourself if you are spending all of your energy and time taking care of someone else. How do you know if this is the case? Being tired and irritable is a good indicator. Take a look at how you spend your day. How much of it is devoted to exercise, right eating, sleeping, and developing the things that interest you? In an incredible book by D. Patrick Miller, The Way Of Forgiveness, the author states that if we ask for help, it is always given. We need to trust this and know that it may not come in the way we think, but it will always come. So we must keep our eyes and minds open. What Is The Truth, Anyway?
By Shalandra Abbey Is my truth the same as your truth? I doubt it. Who determines which truth is accurate? Is there such a thing as an undisputed truth? One definition of truth is: that which is true or in accordance with fact or reality. According to whose fact or reality? Another definition is: a fact or belief that is accepted as true. Accepted by whom? A few years ago, I did a walkabout with Aborigines in Western Australia. The experience changed my thinking about the way societies live, and led me to consider how we think so differently about a variety of matters. For much of my life, my truth had come from being deeply identified with the thinking I learned from society. My thoughts and sense of identity were mostly negative; painful, heavy emotions had accumulated inside. I tried hard to prove to myself and to the world that I was good enough, by working vigorously at whatever I did. After every achievement, though, happiness would begin to fade and the cycle would start again. A few years before the Australia sojourn, Reiki Natural Healing found me. Through treatments and training, life quickly started to feel “mo’ bettah,” as we say in Hawaii. The energy of life felt lighter, more understandable, and enjoyable. This healing energy, from our source, introduced me to new ways of thinking. It guided me to travel and experience how other cultures live and think. The practice of Reiki taught me to live life more simply, and to allow my truth to continue to redefine itself as I dance with the energy of life.
