The Polluters’ Three-Card Monte

“Doubt is our product, since it is the best means of competing with the ‘body of fact’ that exists in the minds of the general public. It is also the means of establishing a controversy.” - Memo from cigarette company executive Lily Tomlin had a wonderful character, Edith Ann, who was 5 years old and bratty to the max. Edith Ann blurts out in one dialogue that she knows lying is wrong, then quickly adds, “but the truth could be made up if you know how.” I just watched a very informative movie – Merchants of Doubt – that reveals the strategies corporations have used to delay controls (and extend windfall profits) on toxic products. Sixty years ago, the lead metal industry went to Madison Avenue for help. The PR firm Hill and Knowlton gave this counsel: Don’t waste time defending the harm of your product, just keep repeating and insisting that the science is inconclusive. That was the birth of the doubt industry – an expanding scheme to challenge scientists, discredit their methods, and dispute their conclusions. Best of all, hire your own scientists. This developed into the ‘sound science/junk science’ meme used again and again by the asbestos, tobacco, oil, coal, gas and nuclear industries. Today, it’s the ‘gold standard’ of climate denial and the biotech-owned seed industry. Fifty years ago, tobacco companies knew their addictive products caused cancer. Yet, testifying under oath in 1994, every one of ‘big six’ CEOs swore to a Senate committee that cigarettes were “not addictive.” None of them dared risk their high-paying jobs and billions in annual profits by admitting the truth. every year from smoking-related illnesses. Did that bother one of the scientists? “Well, they chose to smoke,” he replied. I wonder if the teenagers who were the target of most tobacco ads chose to smoke, or did they want to be cool like Joe Camel or tough like the Marlboro Man? Where in all of this was the FDA? How did they manage to avoid regulating this cancer epidemic for so long? Did industry representatives move in to the agency to write the regulations the way Monsanto does with the E PA ? W h a t M e rc h a n t s o f Doubt shows in great detail is how a small group of mediasavvy consultants blatantly twist the news with great skill. Television networks act as shills for the doubt mongers, allocating equal time for industry apologists to challenge and contradict real scientific evidence. The current champions of this game are the seed industry and its allies, such as the Grocery Manufacturers Association. Another is the fossil fuel gang, with ExxonMobil spending $10 million last year alone on climate denial. They have 30 front groups to justify perpetuation of their ways. The Koch brothers have another 30 ‘think tanks’ to challenge, contradict and confuse
the public. What about academic credibility? No problem. Harvard professor Willie Soon was paid $1.2 million by Exxon for what he billed as ‘deliverables.’ Monsanto, with sales last year of $15.9 billion, has a game on every corner. Not only did they infiltrate our national regulatory agencies to rewrite the rules, they bought agriculture departments across the country. The New York Times had an exposé of one of the seed industry’s strident defenders who always boasted he never received any support from the industry. It turns out that University of Florida horticulture professor Kevin Folta received $25,000 in travel funds from Monsanto. That, however, is lunch money compared to the millions donated to his school by Syngenta, Monsanto, Pioneer and BASF. Locally, the University of Hawaii College of Tropical Agriculture has obtained its fair share of support from Monsanto, which might explain why UH administrators punished Professor Valenzuela for his bold defense of organics and critique of pesticides. No level of influence peddling is too low for Monsanto; they just gave $30,000 to a Hawaiian elementary school in Waialua, with bike helmets for 4th graders! Eventually, the ‘real truth’ comes out. For now, though, corporate consultants are busy making up Edith Ann’s truths… because they know how. Mark Sheehan is a realtor with a lifelong concern for personal and environmental health. Embracing Abundance
I recently celebrated a milestone, my 60th birthday. It felt like I slid into home base after hitting a home run! One of the most cosmic experiences of my life occurred in Iao Valley on that day. When you see me out and about, ask me what happened and I’ll tell you about it! I am blessed to live an abundant life. I choose to see the good in every experience. I have fun at work, even though I work a lot, which is reflected in my healthy bank balances. I have good relationships (especially with my life partner), great laughs with my friends, and many loving interactions. Because I exercise, meditate, eat well, take supplements and have amazing natural health care practitioners guiding me, I am the healthiest I have ever been. Living an abundant life requires strength and effort, and becomes even more possible when you gain the wisdom to stop reacting to life and to quit blaming other people. Unjustified negativity, neediness and criticism – both yours and others’ – are unnecessary and harmful. Let all of that go. Move closer towards your true family and friends, and cultivate more nurturing qualities, such as kindness, gratitude and compassion. The Soul Is Eternal, Money Is Temporal By Liah Howard In my work as a psychic/medium, when I connect with individuals on the other side of life, I find they are very detached from their material belongings and the roles that may have defined them while on Earth. Instead, they share that after death there is an expansiveness of being that connects them to all. They are joyful seeing their loved ones happy and they minimize the value of “things.” In hindsight, they possess a sense of clarity regarding the importance of health and happiness over money. Yet, these same people, while alive, may have stressed over finances or been obsessed with earning. That old saying, “You can’t take it with you,” is true. Yet money continues to hold the spotlight in many people’s lives, at the expense of the soul. Our souls are always calling us to come home to peace, joy and presence, while our society beckons us to earn, produce and consume. This conflict between a simple life and a life of material conquest is all too familiar. Many people live beyond their means and are in debt. They may look good on the outside, but they forfeit their inner serenity to maintain an inflated lifestyle. How we feel about money – whether we are friends with it or feel oppressed by it – can determine the quality of our lives. Money can represent freedom or bondage, depending on our perspective. The ability to “let go” of money at the end of our lives is not determined by the abundance or scarcity of cash, but rather by the ability to detach from the identity the money gave us. Perhaps all the losses we suffer in life are merely preparation for the final letting go, and a reminder to connect with our souls before we transition. One way to gauge our relationship with money is to heighten our awareness when it is bill-paying time. If we look at the calendar calmly and make our monthly payments without drama, we are probably feeling at peace with money and living with a quiet certainty that we are worthy of financial ease and support. On the other hand, if at the end of each month we start to panic and worry, we are probably identified with fear, scarcity and the dread that there will never be enough. Where did we get the idea that our worth can be measured by external circumstances? The worth of the soul is expansive and limitless. Attachment to our bank balance reveals a case of mistaken identity. Another exercise is to notice our reactions when we gain or lose money. If our house forecloses or we go into bankruptcy, do we feel like a failure? In contrast, do we feel more alive and successful when we receive a large sum of money? The answer to these questions reveals our attachment to the changing, material plane. Many consider financial prosperity to be the measure of success, but there is another standard that reveals true and lasting wealth. The soul’s gold standard is the certainty and peace that is sustained from within, regardless of financial plusses and minuses. We can learn from those on the other side of the veil of life that the soul is eternal and money is temporal. We learn that the best investment we can make is our connection to our Infinite Self – radiant, generous and alive – while we are here on Earth.

Maui is at the center of a worldwide community of forward-thinking people who are inwardly directed and outwardly engaged in creating positive, lasting change. On Sunday, November 15, select members of this cosmic community will gather in a daylong Summit to awaken collective divinity. This will be a convergence zone of the highest order, led by Doreen Virtue. A passionate environmentalist and founder of Angel Therapy, Doreen is a well-known Hay House author and teacher. She is a counseling psychologist and a lifelong clairvoyant who works with the angelic realm. She has appeared on Oprah, The View, Good Morning America, CNN and other programs. Bouncing Back With Grace
By Suzän Proia Remember the last time you deliberately ignored your intuition? Do you recall a situation when you knew in your heart that something was unwise to do, but you went ahead and pursued it anyway? Think about the outcome. Perhaps it looked something like this: you metaphorically tripped, fell and landed flat on your proverbial face. The universe tried hard to warn me recently, but I decided I knew better…ha! One minute I was strolling along, head high, feeling clever. And then, BAM! The next thing I knew I was lying at the bottom of the pit of mortification. That is a tough tumble to take. Admittedly, it shook me up when it happened, but I could immediately feel the essence of the lessons bubbling up to the surface from the wellspring below. The reminders included: (1) Listen to your heart, it knows; (2) Trust your intuition, it is accurate; and (3) No need to second guess when something truly resonates within. Our failures provide some of the loudest and most profound lessons. As long as we understand this, and learn and grow from these experiences, then nothing is wasted: not our time, our feelings or our energy. Life lessons arrive in all types of packaging. The challenge is recognizing the gift of the inner message. Too often we are distracted by the way the wisdom has been wrapped. Falling down is easy; our strength lies in the bouncing back. Refrain from beating yourself up, as tempting as that might be. We are a work in progress, which means we want to keep moving forward, trust the messages, listen to the guidance, and follow the directives. You will stay safe, steady and upright! Making An Empowered Choice
By Terri Huber Essences of abundance and gratitude permeate the air as I experience autumn harvest. While I appreciate luscious, local, organic fruits and vegetables, I am reminded of my own bountiful crop of thoughts. As a practice, I intentionally nurture thankful expressions of gratitude. I am mindful that focusing on lack and limitation drains my energy. I have the empowered choice whether to concentrate my awareness on low-vibration thoughts or that of gratitude. Free will aligns me with whichever outcome I desire. Engaging gratitude allows me to ease into the juicy flow of life. From the neuroscience standpoint, my brain only holds presence for one thought at a time. When caught ruminating in a lowvibration loop, I intentionally pick a thankful thought and my consciousness is gently and amazingly transformed. What unfolds is a higher dynamic state of being as I keep choosing thankfulness. Through gratitude, I become connected to the quantum field of synchronicities, abundance and blessings. Now that feels good! Gratitude entails more than a thought or spoken word; it is vitally important to feel the vibration of thankfulness in the physical body. I express gratefulness through the description of sight, hearing, smell, taste and touch, by choosing numerous items in my environment to appreciate through my five senses. Imagine smelling a fragrant plumeria, tasting a succulent papaya, and hearing a melodic ukulele while feeling gratitude. This experience grounds me in the delicious present moment. I invite you to experiment with this technique right now, in your current surroundings. I enjoy playing with these gratitude tools to engage my highest vibrant aliveness. who the world says you should be; that’s the truest form of self-expression! From where I now exist I can see for eons in all directions; the Universe is God’s bedroom, this moment is her navel, and we are the many kisses being planted upon the length of her skin by the love-crazed soul of Existence! It’s Possible For One To Regain Breath And Live An Authentic Life
By Jenny Grace Shaw “Why can’t I break free from these chains?” “Why does this continue to happen to me?” “What did I do to deserve such pain over and over?” “I don’t want to live this way anymore, but there seems to be no way out!” “Why me?” I hear these and other similar questions repeatedly. In the midst of emotional, spiritual and physical pain, it’s understandable to have moments when our precious inner children, who have suffered starvation of love, take off running through theoretical streets screaming, “What about me?” Suffering may sound like a dramatic word, and it is. The truth is, suffering is dramatic, traumatic, and frosted with shame. In my experience, shame can kill faster than a speeding truck. Thus, to recover our lives, we must stand together in support, let go of egos, and practice vulnerability. I have yet to meet anyone who hasn’t felt the stinging whip of shame in some way. Shame is its own body, its own entity; it is one with which we dance, but we never lead. Shame is not the same as guilt. Whereas guilt can motivate us to change a behavior or reach out for help without ego jumping in the way, shame feeds off its own vicious cycle. What causes shame in one person may not cause shame for others; it is unique and individual, but just as devastating. There is an antidote to shame. It’s possible for one to regain breath and live an authentic life. Shame is nourished by continued patterns of self-abuse, negative self-talk, and handing our power over to toxicity. But shame has no chance against love. The moment love walks into the room, shame begins to quiver; it loses its breath. Love needs more than just a pronunciation. In other words, one cannot simply say “I love you” and expect shame to make a sudden U-turn. One must exercise willingness, openness, forgiveness and gratitude. One must allow all past choices and events to come out of the shadows and into the light. Empowerment over shame requires such courage, and I am on my knees in praise for those willing to jump into this toxic-based arena and asking love to stand beside them in battle. The only way to love is through the shame. Going around, ignoring, denying, rationalizing or bargaining with shame only gives it more nourishment. Though it is some of the hardest work one can ever do, the rewards are priceless and completely indescribable. First, a person must own his or her shame-based pattern. It isn’t that the person be blamed – far from it. Rather, in love of the self, the person embraces his or her behaviors and choices, looking deeply within, finding that lost child, holding the child ever so tightly and whispering those magical words as gospel. Battling shame takes courage and forgiveness. Each person is on his or her own path to true love. There are no comparisons, no rights or wrongs, no specific rules. Whether shame is resonating in you or you know someone who suffers, refuse to judge and refuse to push. Offer empathy, not sympathy. Let your actions show just how powerful love is. Dear ones, I am looking at you in love and faith as I ask you one question: Are you ready to surrender?

Grandma’s Law: Bite the Bullet, Have More Fun! By Paul O’Brien A hyper-connected world makes us hyper-distracted. Smartphones, tablets, even watches spit out endless texts, tweets and funny kittens – making it difficult to concentrate or accomplish goals. When faced with a list of tasks, the common tendency is to save the hardest for last, putting off the more stressful items until we have no choice. This tendency leads to procrastination or incidental neglect, where critical factors don’t get the attention or quality of thinking they deserve. How can we better prioritize things to correct for this self-defeating tendency? In my recent book, Great Decisions, Perfect Timing, I bring up an aspect of emotional intelligence known as delayed gratification, which I refer to as “Grandma’s Law.” Daniel Goleman, the author of Emotional Intelligence: Why It Can Matter More Than IQ, makes a compelling case for delaying gratification. He calls for greater “cognitive control” to help children manage their attention through the use of mindfulness techniques. This is Grandma’s Law in a nutshell! The ability to control one’s impulses is a foundation of wise decisionmaking and effective productivity throughout life. As a parent, I tried to teach my son “Grandma’s Law,” which went like this: “Sure, you can have ice cream… after you finish your green beans.” Putting chores first was a lesson I was made to learn at a young age. (I’m grateful about it now.) It took me a while to realize that the removal of overhanging deadlines made subsequent playtime more fun. Applying Grandma’s Law in my own life, I had achieved perfect grades and scholarship awards throughout a rigorous education. Later, Grandma’s Law made a critical difference in my professional life –

informing my decision-making and enabling my ability to survive, and ultimately thrive, as a bootstrap entrepreneur. As a parent, one way I invoked Grandma’s Law with my son was to get him to do his chores and homework on Saturday with Sunday as his play day, rather than the other way around (which he naturally preferred). Grandma’s Law speaks to the logical aspect of strategic decisionmaking – prioritization – helping us do things in the right order. It is logical, because it doesn’t take intuition to analyze the most challenging part of a project or to-do list. Just tune in to your feelings – the thing you dread having to do the most is where you start! If you’re not sure how to focus on the most difficult tasks, ask yourself: What task fills you with the most apprehension? Which are you least confident about? These are the ones to tackle early on. After you knock them off, it’s like rolling downhill until you are done and it’s playtime! Tip: If you’re stuck, try the “Letting Go” mantra from my book. It’s simple: Focusing on your breathing, let go of identifying with changing thoughts and feelings, while being open to and mindful of whatever arises in your mind. Close your eyes and take a full breath, thinking the word Letting as you inhale and stretching out the Go as you exhale. Repeat as often as necessary until your mind relaxes. Your head is then clear enough to make the wise move. You will get better results and have more fun afterwards! Do You Have Leaky Gut? By Maurgana Stiastny Over 2000 years ago, Hippocrates (the father of medicine) said, “All diseases begin in the gut.” It turns out Hippocrates was right. Did you know, 80 percent of your immune system is in your gut microbiome, which is your body’s bacteria? Scientists have estimated that these microbial cells so essential to protecting our health outnumber human cells ten to one. Supporting intestinal health integrity has become one of the most important goals in medicine for the 21st century. The small intestine is where nutrients and vitamins from the foods we eat are passed through the wall of the intestine into the bloodstream. Leaky gut or intestinal permeability occurs when large undigested food molecules and toxins, which should be blocked, are able to pass through the wall of the intestine. The immune system sees it as an invader and creates antibodies to the food particles, attacking healthy cells as well. This creates an inflammatory condition in the body. Some people develop irritable bowel syndrome, Crohn’s disease and colitis. For many people it can affect the brain or musculoskeletal system. Leaky gut can cause several issues, including: chronic gastrointestinal problems; autoimmune disorders (i.e., allergies, diabetes, arthritis); problems with the kidneys, liver and thyroid; depression; autism; and chronic fatigue. Leaky gut can be caused by antibiotic usage, agricultural toxins, parasites, eating certain foods you are allergic or sensitive to, and stress. Chronic constipation can also contribute to leaky gut. A balance of good bacteria and pathogenic bacteria helps to heal this condition. Taking probiotics and eating fermented food such as kimchi and sauerkraut can be helpful. Supplements and dietary changes may also be useful. If you suspect you may have leaky gut, seek a natural healthcare practitioner for testing, treatment and recommendations. An Abundance Of Shakti (Energy)
By Ann Paquin Wayne Dyer said, “Abundance is not something we acquire. It’s something we tune in to.” A powerful way to allow, tune in to, and resonate with abundance is to cultivate gratitude. In practicing gratitude, we look for what’s working, what’s right. We build muscles for a broader perspective of who we really are, and increase the recognition of our worthiness. Underlying beliefs, feelings of unworthiness, or judgments around what we want shape our views, affecting our vision and choices. These things can block our access to abundance. Therefore, what we want could be right in front of us, but we may not be able to see it or allow it in. Through a gratitude practice, we become more receptive to help and release beliefs that are blocking us. Our compassion increases and judgments lessen. We can train ourselves to shift our state of mind within a short time, even on the spot. We increase our ability to differentiate between our story and a greater truth that allows more abundance to come our way. A gratitude practice may start with thoughts of what makes us grateful. If we want to really tune in deeply, there is a way to practice that is even more pleasurable, that also supports consistency; that is to bring in our body and heart centers. If we ground ourselves by following our breath and then feeling the gratitude in our heart, we truly have a mind, body, spirit practice. This can be done anytime and anywhere. Supported by these practices, we are beautifully served before going into a challenging situation or when we feel thrown or surprised. A long-term deeper relationship with gratitude has helped me to wake up happy every day, have patience for Divine Timing, and feel aligned with my purpose.

Shakti meditation invokes powerful forces of life-energy to expand our awareness of knowing, feeling, and sensing beyond our normal ranges of experience. Meditating with shakti-force is designed to open inner energy centers, or chakras, throughout the body, especially along the spine. Shakti meditation is often experienced as a descent of energy from an inner energy center above the head, and as a deeper energy center surrounding the heart. Focusing healing energy can show us where our life-force is blocked and how life-force-power frees and removes these blocks. Life-light-energy reveals many kinds of obstructions – limitations, toxins and trauma. Any and all of these can be released within a light-fire-energy-cleansing shakti. In meditation, we go beyond our surface personality, or our outer self, to connect with our deeper inner self. As we work with healing force, blocked energy is cleansed and released throughout mental, emotional and physical parts of our nature. With this release, there is an opening to presence, calm, and peace from a higher, deeper and wider consciousness. In addition, we become aware of support that comes from deep within us. This inner support and center are a source of nourishment, love and inner strength. As we resonate to the experience of clarity, balance and renewal, we can accept, apply and express this expanded healing awareness and energy. Shakti meditation teaches us about the consciousness of who we really are and how to express this deeper self in life, work and relationships. Embracing The Free Flow

By Jody Mountain If we look to the wisdom of Ancient Indigenous cultures, we find the future of human potential. While the scientific mind has ruled our Western culture for hundreds of years, Ancient peoples absorbed their wisdom over millennia – living with the land and experiencing the principles of nature both inside and outside themselves. They knew their body/mind/spirit to be One Being, just as all of nature operates as one synergistic whole. They pass on the simple principle that everything is infused with a deeply connected Life Spirit Force. Bhakti Yoga: The Heart Of Devotion By Mike Crall Chanting, or kirtan, is a part of the path of Devotional Yoga. When we see the beauty of our own being, we are seeing the beauty of the Being that is the One of which we all are a part. And when we turn towards that One, love is the natural reaction of the heart. Satsang is a space where people gather together to remember, turn within, and find their own inner path to the One. When we gather together to chant, we are helping each other find our individual paths. We all must travel this path by ourselves because each of us is our own path. All of these paths wander on in their own way, but in truth, we all are traveling together; and until the last of us arrives, we all will keep traveling. The following is an excerpt from Pilgrim of the Heart audio series by Krishna Das: “The words of these chants are called the divine names and they come from a place that’s deeper than our hearts and our thoughts, deeper than the mind. And so as we sing them they turn us towards ourselves, into ourselves. They bring us in, and as we offer ourselves into the experience, the experience changes us. These chants have no meaning other than the experience that we have by doing them. They come from the Hindu tradition, but it’s not about being a Hindu, or believing anything in advance. It’s just about doing it, and experiencing. Nothing to join, you just sit down and sing.”
Abundant Experiences To Share
By Rich Ralston Most of the people I have worked with have had an abundance of challenges, which has created a lack of abundance for them. This lack is often related to money, unemployment, poor health, and stressful family relationships. There seems to be a contradiction in how people perceive the concept of abundance. Abundance is usually thought of as having more than we need of the good things, and being able to share the excess with those who are in need. How can we understand abundance in a way that makes sense, especially when many people are struggling with life issues? First of all, we need to understand that none of us are exempt from life’s challenges. We can align with the energy of abundance by developing a new perspective about what we are experiencing in our lives. All of our life challenges are really an opportunity for us to understand ourselves and gain knowledge. Also, it is possible to work through our challenges and to develop a positive attitude that will attract an abundance of good things into our lives. I have discovered that we can release old patterns of behavior that have created lack of abundance. Many of us have vast knowledge about our personal experiences that we can share about with others. I want you to think about some of your experiences that have been extremely challenging for you. You have probably gained much knowledge as a result of those experiences. I suggest you offer your abundant knowledge to help someone – perhaps by helping that person view his or her own challenges with a positive attitude. A Little Big Life
By Lila Danielle “If you ask me what I came into this life to do, I will tell you: I came to live out loud.” – Emile Zola This morning when I noticed how the coffee lingered on my tongue, how the cream swirled around in my mouth and how a ritual like this can set the course of a day, I paused. To choose how I live is a privilege. When the choices I make feel like someone else’s, this gives me pause as well. I want a little big life…where the glitz and glamour of others pales in comparison to the glory of my own existence, and I remember what I already have is enough. Yesterday when I took the time to write a letter to a friend with a pen, I loved how the words spilled forth without effort and how a gift like this can be welcomed in. To touch another through a small gesture isn’t always easy, but it’s always available. When the invitations I extend get no RSVPs, I’ll continue giving them anyway. Achieving Abundance By Barbara Ensign Abundance can mean different things to different people. What is abundance to you, and how can you achieve it? Abundance is about more than financial wealth; it can be about having an abundance of time, good friends and good health, or having a spiritual connection. We don’t wake up in the morning worrying if there will be enough air to breathe. In order to achieve abundance, it helps to first experience the feeling of abundance. So how do you experience this feeling? Several years ago, a woman who wanted to be abundant came to me for a hypnosis session. Nalu’s South Shore Grill Is Cheery & Contemporary Review by Lila Danielle One of Kihei’s newest restaurants is off to a riproaring start in Azeka Plaza with a beautiful makeover of the interior space and plenty of five-star reviews on Yelp. The décor is impressive and the menu offers a myriad of locally sourced fresh foods. And, Nalu’s needs a bit more fine-tuning in the service department, and some seasoning in its crab cake sandwich and salad to make this restaurant a tastier place. Nalu is a Hapa-Hawaiian phrase meaning “to go with the flow.” While the open-air dining area and bar concept plays well with this theme, customers shouldn’t have to wander in and wonder how a restaurant works. It took a little too long for any of the employees to say hello and let me know ordering takes place at the counter. I noticed a lot of colorful chalkboards displaying menu items, and candles on the handsome reclaimed wood tables, but I didn’t see any signs directing patrons to the front counter. Perhaps the t w o l a rg e g l a s s containers on a side counter with serveyourself flavored waters should have been my clue. Once I ordered, and again, when my food was delivered, the service improved. The mango dressing on the crabcake salad is yummy, and the homemade potato crisps served with sandwiches are crunchy and delightfully different than the usual side of fries or store-bought chips.
It’s admirable for a new restaurant to serve breakfast, lunch and dinner, and to have a variety of items that appeal to many different appetites. Nalu’s offers fruit bowls, egg dishes, and sweet treats like cornflake-crusted French toast until 2:30; and then sandwiches, salads and burgers are available beginning at 11:00 a.m. until closing time. Prices are reasonable, and a MondayFriday Happy Hour from 3:00-6:00 p.m. offers nice discounts on well drinks and on-tap beers. The bar area is charming despite there being five too many televisions on the back wall, and there’s a space set up for live music. Overall, my dining experience at Nalu’s was enjoyable and it has great potential. Having only been open since the beginning of July, perhaps Nalu’s is still exploring what kind of restaurant it will be for locals and tourists alike. An upscale sports bar? A casual dinner house? A little bit of everything like the beloved Stella Blues Café was? Perhaps Nalu’s will become the sweet-eat, sip-and-hang-out spot that Kihei has been needing; or maybe it will become the most delicious restaurant in that part of town. Restoring A Free Flowing Life
By Douglas Price, D.C. Two definitions of abundance are: overflowing fullness and a plentiful amount. What do you do if you feel like you have neither in your life? Chiropractic work and kinesiology are powerful avenues to remove anything blocking you from abundance. Kinesiology is a system of healing that uses muscle testing as a living “biocomputer” to remove blocks in the mind, body and spirit. For example, a patient with control issues may show debilitating weakness in a specific muscle called teres minor, which needs to be healed for a full return to health. Correction occurs in one of the two triads. Triad One deals with unanticipated events from your past that altered your inner rhythm. As a result, you may be stuck in “fight or flight” mode, which could manifest as a desperate energy that will surely push abundance away. Or, when you have just gotten over an overwhelming and stressful situation, you may be put into the “eat and sleep” mode; in this case, you may not be able to seize opportunities to receive abundance. Resolving the control issue will reset the rhythm. Triad Two deals with breakdown in communication within our thyroid organ and its associated muscle, the teres minor mentioned earlier. This failure in communication creates tension, leading to physical pain, loss of vitality and loss of ability to focus. When we are in this state, it doesn’t take much to trigger a sudden emotional reaction that throws us off course and out of focus of what we really want. This creates blockages in the natural flow of the mind and body. Fortunately, these blockages can be cleared so you can receive with open arms. Dr. Douglas J. Bones Are Alive!
Releasing Trauma And Healing The Bones
By Rebekah Harbour We often imagine bones as dry, hard, and essentially inert. In reality, bone in a living being consists primarily of living tissue. Within the bones are blood vessels, nerves, collagen, and living cells (osteoblasts and osteoclasts) that maintain bone regeneration. Injuries and trauma impact the bones and leave tension patterns that may last a lifetime. This is not all bad news. Bones can be supported to grow more functionally too! Releasing held tension in the bones by relaxing, stretching or strengthening the muscles (and therefore changing the tensions they create on bone), and retraining body mechanics, are very effective at restoring balance and encouraging beneficial energy flow and growth. The bodywork system Zero Balancing (ZB) addresses bones and vibrations stored within them. A ZB session with a skilled practitioner releases stored vibrations of past tension from the bones themselves. This allows new bone growth to follow the needs of the present, instead of patterning itself around past events. When I was 14, I dropped a large knife point down on my foot. My whole body went into shock, and my leg buckled underneath me! To avoid the pain, I began to limp on the outside edge of my foot. The pain stopped over time, but my limp became an unconscious habit. Over years, my shin developed a subtle bow, manifesting first as knee pain. A series of ZB sessions released tension of trauma that had been held in the bones and joints of my leg and foot. Yoga helped me to create new conscious alignment habits. Do You Have ‘Text Neck’?

It turns out that hunching your shoulders and keeping your head down while working, studying, reading or texting is not only bad for your posture; it can impact the health of your cervical spine (neck). Your head weighs approximately 12 pounds, and if you spend a significant amount of time slumped over, the forces on your cervical spine are substantial. According to recent research, when you bend your head forward at 15 degrees, its weight effectively increases from 12 pounds to 27 pounds. At 45 degrees, your head exerts 49 pounds of force, and at 60 degrees, 60 pounds. This is like carrying an eight-year-old child around on your neck for several hours per day! A c c o r d i n g t o T h e Wi r e l e s s Association, smartphone users spend an average of two to four hours per day hunched over their devices, which amounts to 700 to 1,400 hours per year that they are exerting this stress on their necks. Additional time spent bent over a desk or computer, reading or studying, can compound the problem. Long-term consequences may include pain, inflammation, muscle strain and spasm, disc herniation, arthritis, pinched nerves, and loss of the cervical curve. Several suggestions to counteract ‘text neck’ are as follows. First, hold your electronic device in front of you instead of bending your head down. Second, use a bookstand and/or proper computer ergonomics to prevent forward head posture while working or studying. Third, maintain spinal and core fitness through practices such as yoga or Pilates to keep supportive spinal muscles strong. Finally, undergo an examination with a cervical chiropractor to determine whether a cervical injury is contributing to neck symptoms. Is your furniture attractive and in good shape? If not, paint, slipcover, fix or replace items that are shabby or worn out. 5. Allow yourself to experience luxury at home. For example, drink tea out of a beautiful cup, dry off with a plush and fluffy towel, and sleep on silky soft sheets. The changes you make don’t need to be expensive; they just need to be positive. Once you’ve enhanced your feng shui, you may find abundance showing up in unexpected and wonderful ways. Remember, you deserve it!
