Hold the Bacon: Navigating the “Meatrix” By Mark Sheehan All that is left of America is banality and delusion. - Noam Chomsky The matrix continues to be revealed, but we want to believe – in something. You don’t have to watch Fox News or CNN to understand how five corporate empires control our media, rarely looking behind the defense curtain at the military/ industrial complex. Powerful forces are willing to destroy the Middle East to control the oil. With the near death of the Gulf of Mexico and even the oceans, we’re witnessing planet-wide impacts of chemicals and conglomerates with few controls. If you’ve engaged the health system lately, you know big pharma runs the show; they determine which drugs are developed, what doctors prescribe and what pharmacists dispense. And what about our food supply? What happens to the millions of tons of pesticides used to grow our food? Where does it all go? The short answer is, in us. We have become human landfills! Would the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Food and Drug Administration and Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) allow such a thing? Of course, because they are under pressure and influence from the meat producers, their lobbyists and others they need to satisfy. For example, with no scientific justification, the EPA recently raised the allowable limit of glyphosate (Roundup) in humans by 200 times. When you think of dioxins, do you think ‘agent orange’ or do you think prime rib? A recent study concluded that 93 percent of the average American’s exposure to dioxins comes through animal fat, meat and dairy consumption. The World Heath Organization states that “dioxins can cause reproductive and developmental problems, damage the immune system, interfere with hormones and also cause cancer.”
Almost all feedlot cattle are fed hormones and antibiotics to protect against the unsanitary conditions, but also to fatten them. Decades of study show that people on such a diet gain weight. Even ‘last resort’ antibiotics, like Colistin, are used to fatten animals and profits. The toxic dump system begins on the land: low-level uranium waste is licensed as liquid fertilizer, lead-laced waste from a pulp mill is hauled to farms in Camas, Washington, and a toxic byproduct from steel mills winds up as fertilizer in Moxee City, Washington. These recycled fertilizers can contain cadmium, lead, arsenic, radioactive materials and dioxins. Each year, the MRSA infection kills more people in the U.S. than AIDS, and half of all swine workers carry it. The head of the Centers for Disease Control has warned of “catastrophic threat” to our health system due to overuse of antibiotics, which causes a minimum of 2 million illnesses per year and 23,000 deaths. The China Study summarizes a 20-year review of the diet of 800,000 people from 67 coun-
ties in China. This study examined the relationship between consumption of animal products (including dairy) and chronic illnesses. It concluded that people who eat a whole-food and plant-based diet, avoid all animal and dairy products, and reduce their intake of processed foods and refined carbohydrates will escape, reduce or reverse development of major illnesses including heart disease and cancers. If you’re addicted to meat, find a local, grass-fed source or look for venison. Navigating the meat matrix takes knowledge, access and wise use of your food budget. Recent reports suggest we need less protein and more fats. Vegan sites provide dozens of alternatives to meet your protein needs outside the meat world. A thorough lab test may guide you to a better diet that will provide the missing nutrients you need. Don’t wait until you get sick; find a health consultant and get a health nutritional profile. Look into ways to detoxify. Health food stores offer various ways to cleanse and there are colon therapists around the island. Fasting can also be beneficial. Boost your immune system – your first line of defense. Vigorous exercise is universally recommended. Meditate, breathe deeply, and learn and practice qigong to strengthen your protective immune system. Learn about glutathione, the ‘mother of all antioxidants.’ Also, get your Vitamin Bs checked along with Vitamins C and D. Most of us are not taking enough. Lastly, avoid banality and delusion. Highly Questionable GMO Pesticides Put To A Vote On Nov. 4
By Nikhilananda Few residents of Maui County vote or participate in the political system. Many citizens do not involve themselves because they feel it makes little difference – for instance, testifying at hearings and attending meetings where elected officials mostly do what they want. The first time I stood for office 22 years ago, many members of our ‘new-age/spiritual’ community told me they would “surround me with white light” or “throw the I-Ching,” yet would not register and vote! I thanked them and still gently asked them to register, because the people who tally votes do not count the “white light”! Now, many years later, our community is more aware of and involved with the political system. This November, voters have the opportunity to request a suspension of genetic engineering practices until their environmental impacts are reviewed. With the proliferation of GMO crops, we as a community are unaware of the effect this may have upon us. Questions have arisen about the health impacts of experimental pesticides being used extensively and being spread throughout our land and air. What, if any, risks are we exposed to from toxic chemicals being utilized without our knowledge? Sadly, as we have learned in the past – with tobacco, Love Canal and other Superfund sites – we just do not know the long-term health consequences of our actions. Two related concerns are occurring simultaneously – the actual GMO crops themselves and the dissemination by open air testing of various chemicals and restricted use pesticides. Empirical and anecdotal evidence questions their safety, for both workers and the general public. What of the unintended, but very possible, cross-pollination? Is there a problem with chemical runoff on our groundwater and to the reefs? The Maui County Clerk released the actual verbiage of the initiative as it will appear on the ballot, and for some reason, the very essence of the citizens’ movement – that this be temporary – was left out. The language on the ballot mentions nothing about a moratorium. Why is this and how can that be? Does this play into the hands of those misinforming our community that it is a potential ban on farming? Various individuals and groups have been influenced by the tens of thousands of dollars being invested in defeating this sensible and needed legislation. The multinational company leading the charge on numerous fronts – through lawsuits and blatantly deceiving commercials – has quite a questionable history. They are a potentially responsible party for at least 93 Superfund sites; four of their industrial facilities rank amongst the worst in the United States in total toxic releases. Their legal and political machinations are maneuvers to distract voters from the reality of what the initiative is truly about. It is reminiscent of Joseph Goebbels’s style of propaganda proliferated to hide the truth by the “great lie” – to say it over and over in various arenas and confuse everyone. They are desperate to mislead the community. With millions of dollars invested and international holdings, their resources are unlimited. Nevertheless, they have failed in numerous courts and communities around the country and the world. Many questions are in need of answers. Scores of countries have banned their use. We do not want to find out after the fact that we ignorantly trusted the wrong people with our health and safety. Nikhilananda is standing for the Maui County Council. Become A Vessel Of Divine Wisdom And Love
By Liah Howard Just as there are some people who never venture outside into nature, so too are there folks who never journey inside to discover their true nature. It’s not that staying inside is wrong; it just gives you a very limited perspective on life. It’s difficult to feel connected to Mother Nature when you live in a tiny apartment in the city where the air is dirty and the noise is deafening. Similarly, though there’s nothing wrong with leaving the inner realms unexplored, you can overlook an entire invisible reality, just like the city dweller who misses seeing the stars at night. If you’re ready to expand your horizons and travel to the inner planes, then I invite you to open your connection to the divine flow through meditation and channeling. Being connected in this way can support you to learn how to receive assistance from invisible helpers, access more of your potential, and experience a calmer, more fulfilled life with a heightened sense of purpose. Learning to meditate is the first step on the inner journey. Meditation teaches concentration, which is the key to opening the door to your inner realm. Once this is learned, meditation becomes the foundation for being able to channel. Channeling is the process of entering a deep meditative awareness experienced as a trance state. In this altered state, one learns to raise his or her vibration, allowing the personal self to step aside while opening to the Universal Self. The person channeling becomes a vessel for divine wisdom and love. This energy can be expressed as gifts and insights, such as psychic knowing, artistic expres-

sion, musical aptitude, inspirational writing, healing abilities, philosophical understanding and scientific insight, to name a few. It is our natural state to be connected to our inner guidance and gifts. But sometimes this inner connection is forgotten. Luckily, one can learn to reconnect with their true nature through meditation and channeling. Keep in mind that the personality and body are just a tiny portion of the vastness of one’s infinite being, and the veil between physical and non-physical reality is quite thin. meditation and channeling can again become second nature. The ability to tap into the soul’s wisdom can bring a more profound sense of purpose and presence. Latent gifts may blossom and an abiding peace may fill your heart. But, just as one cannot truly feel the rejuvenating effects of being in nature by watching National Geographic, so too one cannot know the deep peace that lies within by staying externally focused. Tapping Into The Power Within
By Suzan Proia, C.Ht. If I had a collection of all the issues that my clients resolved over the years, most would boil down to a single root cause. In almost every case they gave their personal power away. A shift occurred, and their inner core of strength became fragmented by relinquishing that power to an event, an individual(s), a situation, a belief or a substance. We may feel an internal imbalance when we allow this to happen, which often morphs into negative emotions and behaviors: stress, anxiety, addiction, anger, insomnia and depression are common. Since we instinctively tend to seek balance, many people will attempt to reclaim the power they have lost. There are numerous methods to achieve this, and each of us resonates with a particular approach. My personal choice is EFT (emotional freedom techniques), or tapping. When my boyfriend recently recognized that I had given away (and never completely reclaimed) my power from a loved one in my past, it was time to get to work. I admit, it is much easier for me to help someone else, and I was resistant. This issue ran deep, and the session that unfolded was one of the most powerful I have experienced. The emotional relief that came from collapsing this challenge was liberating. The intensity of the impromptu session and the dramatic results served as a distinct reminder on several levels. Our inner work is ongoing and there is always something we can tweak. The more clear we are as individuals, the more we can offer to the world. Transform With Inner Journeys
By Maribeth Theisen Have you ever felt fragmented, like you’re not ‘yourself’? Perhaps different voices in your mind each have their own agenda. In one situation you have one set of feelings; in another you think differently. For instance, at work you are patient and even-tempered, but when you get home you snap at your kids. You are multi-dimensional – your body houses your mind, your emotions, your spirit! And, you are connected to the thoughts, emotions and spirit of others. Each of these realms is incredibly complex. Take your mind, for example. Just as a galaxy is composed of countless stars, a person has many selves – the hurt child, powerful warrior, nurturing parent, industrious worker, infinite God/ dess and many others. Each represents an ability to respond and adapt to different situations. We experience an integrated sense of oneness when we are centered. But when we go about our day on autopilot, reacting to life habitually, our parts step in to handle the tasks before us. Sometimes it’s the wrong one for the job! How do you create inner peace and wholeness? Here are some ways: 1) Recognize a part when it emerges; consciously make a different choice. 2) Meditate more, and allow your infinite nature to have more time in charge. Observe any voices that arise, acknowledge them and allow them to pass. 3) Lovingly explore and befriend your inner family with a trained therapist, to heal wounded aspects of yourself. Learn to consciously and intentionally bring forward the desired wisdom or skill – when you want it. Become like the conductor of a well-tuned orchestra. 4) Work with a shamanic practitioner who uses ceremony to retrieve parts you lost through grief or trauma. Ram Dass Celebrates Ten Years On Maui By Eric T. Richter After ten years of living on Maui, beloved Ram Dass is Still Here Now, and ready to host a tenth anniversary Satsang and gathering on Sunday, November 30 in Makawao. As an internationally renowned spiritual author and teacher, Ram Dass’ legacy continues today from his roots as a counterculture icon in the 1960s – first with LSD experiments as a Harvard professor along with Timothy Leary, and later as a spiritual teacher with the book that has sold millions, Be Here Now. His journey to India, and his relationship with his Hindu guru Neem Karoli Baba (affectionately known as Maharajji), have inspired millions to journey within on a spiritual path. His lectures and gatherings around the world, numerous books, media interviews and charity projects are a testament to his life of selfless service for humanity’s awakening. “Back then there were older people who remembered me,” the 83-year-old quipped during a recent interview in his Haiku home, which has sweeping views of the deep blue Pacific. “That doesn’t happen now!” he said with a twinkle in his eyes. How did the Maui satsangs begin? While living in Santa Cruz, he hosted a “Ram Dass 2004 Retreat on Maui” in October, with associated public events. He had serious health conditions when he came to Maui, but nevertheless, he met all the commitments for the retreat, a book signing event at Borders Bookstore in Kahului and the first public event at The Studio Maui in Haiku. More than 350 people packed The Studio Maui

that night with an amazing Hawaiian blessing and prayer by Auntie Mahilani Poepoe, accompanied by Lei’ohu Ryder, foretelling the future for Ram Dass on Maui. The day after the event, Ram Dass was admitted to Maui Memorial Medical Center. He recuperated there for nearly a month. During that time arrangements were made for him to stay and live on Maui. Upon his recovery, subsequent satsangs were held monthly, then quarterly, and in recent years, once a year. The format is the same: the gatherings are intended to share music/kirtan (bhakti yoga), provide a space to share a talk and then share in a meal (prasad). The event on November 30 will

feature music by internationally known headliner Krishna Das and special guests Lei’ohu Ryder and Maydeen Iao, who are Maui singers/songwriters/ cultural teachers, will join in the celebration. Since 2009, the program has served as a significant food drive for the Maui Food Bank. Although his guru passed away in 1973, during a 2008 interview with Maui Vision Magazine, Ram Dass said he still encounters Maharajji in dreams, visions and after-death physical contacts. He explained, “Your guru mirrors for you your own soul. The difference between a guru and a teacher is that the teacher points the way, while your guru is the way – on the mountain ahead of you.” Today, does he consider himself a guru? “I am not a guru,” he answered. “There are people that consider me to be their guru and if that helps them, so be it. I consider myself a conduit for Maharajji.” His most recent books are Be Love Now, published in 2011, and Polishing the Mirror, which debuted in 2013. So, what’s up now for Ram Dass, besides the upcoming Satsang? “People ask me, what are you doing on Maui?” He said with a smile, “I’m studying contentment.” Ram Dass Thanksgiving Sunday Satsang will take place 4 to 7 p.m. on Sunday, November 30 at Makawao Union Church. How To Channel Creative Power By Paul O’Brien No need to beg. Whatever your heart desires, you will realize it more easily by means of a skillful invocation. Twenty years ago I developed a Creative Manifestation Treatment based on an old Religious Science template, and use it to facilitate manifesting important desires. Edit the treatment to make it feel powerful to you. Read it aloud with feeling every morning as you sit on a cushion. Summon divine wisdom to help you fulfill your highest priorities and assume an optimistic attitude of expectancy. Step 1: Recognition. I humbly acknowledge Creative Power, the universal magnetic energy that unites and makes things whole. Divine power expresses as love, wisdom and courage. It is reflected in the infinite vastness of space, in the sun around which earth revolves, in the beauty of nature, in the joy of love, and in every kind of miracle. This unlimited resource operates according to the law of cause and effect that begins with attraction. First the image, then the declaration, and then manifestation. I know there is no limit to the power of divine love. Step 2: Identification. I am one with Creative Power, which surrounds me and flows through me. My very breathing reminds me of my interconnectedness with all of nature and I can feel it any time I close my eyes. Divine love and wisdom surround me, and go before me, making easy and successful my way. I am capable of facilitating any results I visualize and feel. I don’t need to know what exact form the results will take, but solutions appear quickly and easily. I deserve what is good for me. Step 3: Declaration. I declare that I am now enjoying the realiza-
tion of [my desire]. This feels [liberating, joyous and pleasurable, etc.]. Step 4: Thanksgiving. I give thanks for the fulfillment of [my desire], the joy of which I am feeling even now. I feel strong on my path, I am confident and full of faith, and my heart is filled with gratitude. Step 5: Release. I let go of tendencies to worry or interfere by trying to make results take shape in any particular way. I know that the law of cause and effect is operating on this treatment right now, even if my senses have no proof yet. I am attracting [my desire], and [my desire] is attracting me. The manifestation of this, or something better, is in process. Creative Power is synchronistically producing the right results for me in a way and according to a schedule that is perfect. I am letting go of trying to control things and I surrender to the good that is my destiny. My “faith” is my psychic sense of the manifesting process that is happening behind the scenes right now. Step 6: Emotional magnetization. I let myself feel the presence of what I have declared, which is in the process of manifesting. As I let this feeling radiate throughout my entire being, I am becoming magnetic. Step 7: Action steps. I make the right moves at the right time, starting with better decision-making that taps intuition and intellect and receptivity to good advice. I make and follow up on commitments to myself. In the two-steps-forward, one-step-back dance of life, I am taking good steps in a timely manner. As long as I am tuned in to Creative Power, I know I can’t go wrong! By Lila Danielle Good company in a journey makes the way seem shorter. - Izaak Walton Sometimes a journey within is best when taken in the company of others. Intentionally setting aside time out to explore the inner workings of your heart, mind, body or whatever else inside you that’s calling out for some serious excavation work, is always a good thing. Sometimes going on retreat with other people can be even better. Different perspectives and situations that stir your stuff up are ripe opportunities for discovery and growth. As one who facilitates and goes on retreats myself, I always appreciate the personal revelations I’ve dug up (or that have been unexpectedly uncovered with the help of a fellow digger) while participating in group experiences. That doesn’t mean I’m always delighted and completely receptive to whatever has been revealed, but retreats prompt and inspire me to ask deeper questions of myself and remain curious about the answers. A recent ten-day juice cleanse definitely had me journeying within. To consider my creature comforts and well-established routines wasn’t what I would call ‘a good time,’ but the experience was made more enjoyable and enlightening with my husband along for the produce ride. It’s quite common on the first day or two to be a bit cranky when what you’ve been eating on a regular basis is no longer coursing through your veins. I was quickly made very aware of my aching head and vulnerable state of being. Sharing similar experiences with my partner not only helped me stay open to new insights, but also gave me support to stay on the cleanse. Some journeys together help you journey further within. Uncovering A Vital Spiritual Path By Bodhi Be Breaking out of the dominant culture’s materialistic view of life usually requires one of two possible events to occur – either you have a spiritual experience outside the realm of logic, or you experience loss or breakdown, which could be a spiritual experience in itself. Either one of these events has the potential to drive you towards longing for a deeper meaning and understanding of it all, leading you on a journey to cultivate an inner life. When I say ‘inner life,’ I do not mean a psychological exploration that involves questions such as “how am I doing?” or “am I okay?” Nor does it mean trying to unravel how you came to be this way. An inner life is one that cultivates glimpses and direct experiences of the ‘holy’ itself. It is one that breaks through our limited sense of self, our separation and loneliness. It connects us directly to the unity of all that is – to the unmanifested, all-pervading reality within and without, one that tears down the illusions of self-importance and worthlessness. Many things seem to get in the way of this direct experience. These include habitually identifying with our thoughts as to who we are (notice how quickly we jump on each thought that arises); conscious and unconscious storytelling that convinces us we know what’s going on; spending much of our time in the past and future; feeling terror about dying; judging parts of ourselves as ‘unspiritual’; judging others and ourselves; and occupying ourselves with busyness. A vital, living religion or spiritual path
will provide a view, or understanding, of what the ‘holy’ or ‘God’ is. It will reveal a pathway, and provide practices and attunements, for you to realize and embody the view as living truth. Finding a view that resonates in your heart can be a first step. As we cultivate a relationship with the vastness of who we truly are, and integrate that reality with our identity as the limited, manifested, individuated self, we can approach the stories in our lives from a wider perspective. We are no longer ‘just our stories.’

But deep down you are curious about what lies beyond the borders of your own walls. You are thirsty, hungry, waiting and wondering about the person who you should know better than anyone. By journeying inward, we remember how to awaken the wisdom within ourselves – to activate the divine energy that awaits to be honored, nourished, and most importantly, loved. You only have to allow the walls to fall off your shining soul. Everything you will ever need or want to become is already within you. It’s just buried and locked away behind fear – fear of your weakness and of your greatness. We may be tiny and insignificant in the world, but we are also powerful beyond belief. As you read these words, you may be aware of sounds around you, of your breathing, or of yourself noticing thoughts. This describes being ‘here and now.’ When we are unaware of this present moment, we are in a state of unawareness. In other words, we are in a state of hypnosis or we are dreaming. A helpful exercise you can practice throughout the day is to ask yourself, “what is here and now?” Take a look around, listen to sounds, feel textures, feel your breathing and your body. The second question you can ask is, “what am I dreaming about?” Notice any thoughts, feelings or beliefs. Then ask again, “what is here and now?” Without judging as good or bad, just notice. This gives you choice. Sometimes your subconscious memories get triggered, taking you into a state of hypnosis. For instance, you hear an old love song that triggers a flood of memories. What do you do? First, recognize that you just slipped into a memory. Second, ask yourself, “what memory got triggered?” Third, choose to be ‘here and now.’ If you have difficulty stepping out, the inner journey of hypnotherapy can guide you into the memory safely, to heal it and explore the hidden treasures there. The next time you find yourself in a state of hypnosis and believing in a memory, just stop for a moment, take a deep breath, and say, “I was believing in the past.” You are now standing in a doorway to a different possibility. Waking Up To The Gift Of Each Day By Jenny Shaw Rolling over onto my restless side, I notice a small yet significant glare sneaking through my drapes. I find myself releasing the same sigh I do almost every day about this time. Then I hear the neighborhood roosters doing what they do every single morning – reminding us that we had better forget about sleeping in. Suddenly, a whirlwind of birds begin their singing and it’s clear that there’s no chance for me to avoid it any longer. I struggle with the sheets pulling at my body (or is it my soul?), as if to offer freedom from an ever-strangling angst. It’s as if they actually know what my day really entails more than I do. The very thought of a shower sends chills down my spine. “What’s wrong with me?” I ask myself as I gasp internally, looking around to see if anyone can actually see me. “What am I doing?” “Why am I here?” “What purpose do I serve anyway?” The repeated phrase, “there are people starving in Africa or dying of ‘real’ diseases like AIDS and Cancer,” swallows me up as I am whining about feeling separate and different from the rest of the wondrous people around me. Suddenly I become aware of the words I have spoken many times to all of the phenomenal people I am blessed to work with in my practice. My purpose is as pure as the conception of new life, and it is blessed upon me without me needing
to reclaim my worth each and every day. My soul is beautiful ‘as is.’ I need not sell myself short simply to buy my way into a group of ‘others’ in search of acceptance. The only true enemy I need to be concerned with is the one who holds me in solitary confinement. It’s the one who places unrealistic expectations, lies to my face, cheats on my soul, and punishes me at alarming rates.
I no longer see my morning as something to fear. In fact, I see it as a remarkable gift that’s been wrapped in the most elegant and irreplaceable birthday paper. The lenses through which I used to view life have been replaced, and my vision is colorful and flowing now. I don’t need to know what tomorrow will be. I don’t even need to know what the end of today ‘should’ be. All I need to make sure of is that I release myself from my own shame-based bondage and practice true vulnerability. Participating in my own life’s adventure is not only the greatest opportunity, but it also gives me the sense of belonging I crave and dream about. My worth is not dependent on who notices me today. Rather, it is about how I notice myself. I am the key master of this cage. My voice is loud and strong now as I feel my body almost wanting to dance. I not only welcome the light of a new day; I hold my head high, inviting it in with a Clint Eastwood stance, as I shout internally, “I am free! Take A Journey Within By Barbara Ensign Within each person is a powerful core, an unending source of creativity. Some may refer to it as spirit, soul, God Self or higher self. Many tap in to this source by being still, connecting with the breath, meditating, or being out in nature. The SOPs Of Shamanism
By Eliza Bassett Many spiritual traditions point seekers to the path of inner knowledge. Shamanic practices are certainly about learning different levels and messages from activating the function of inner vision. One of the primary teachers of western shamanism posits that fifty percent of the people on the planet have the shamanic ‘programming’ installed in their memory. Some of the pathways to shamanic explorations are as follows. Many people experience deep joy by dancing to drumming on the beach, or around a campfire in the woods. This seems to activate something ancient within these people. Gabrielle Roth deeply explored this connection and created the 5 Rhythms series for personal growth and understanding. Dreaming is another path to the inner dimensions. Many of the surviving indigenous peoples have their culture’s traditions, tools and understanding for exploring their dream worlds. Unfortunately, in our modern culture, many people are terrified of the symbols and emotions brought forward from the content of their incomprehensible dreams. Robert Moss has created a body of shamanic protocols to safely explore those messages – through blending the recording of dreams and re-entry into them via shamanic journeys. Many people know how much nature feeds them in an intangible way. A couple based in New England has explored the messages received from weather systems and clouds through shamanic means. Nia can be described as a sensory-based movement practice that draws from martial arts, dance arts and healing arts. In Nia, we use fifty-two basic movements that come from nine different movement forms. Classes are taught using diverse music styles. For me, Nia is movement medicine. It is an invitation to move energy through my body in different ways. Each time I begin teaching a class, I leave behind all distractions and I am truly in the present moment. Wherever I am in my body, I can take it to the dance floor and move my core to encourage healthy organs, allowing my systems to rebalance. I trust that the body is truly coded to heal. My intention is to heal, to shift, to feel better, and to listen to my body and hold space for others to do so. Nia has been an important part of my journey – a pathway to celebrating life in times of joy, and a way through times of deep grief and trauma. Our blessed ohana has been given the kuleana to do something about the fact that our water, air and aina become more contaminated each year. What a privilege to live on this magical island that the whole world comes to visit. Yet the dirty little truth we don’t want our visitors to know is that contaminants from pesticides, cane burning, agro farming and GMO testing are beginning to affect more of our citizens in various and alarming ways. Together, we are coming up with many solutions. More of us are awakening to the ugly reality that if we don’t act now to nourish our magnificent environment, we may soon be past the point of no return. The great news is that there are practical and focused ways to turn this situation around! You can become part of the solution, instead of complaining or ignoring reality. Are you registered to vote? The deadline to register is October 6th. Do you know about the SHAKA Movement and the GMO initiative on the November 4th ballot? If not, get educated and let your voice be heard. Your personal choices are important, too. Are you using Roundup in your garden? How much processed food do you feed your family? Whenever possible, organic is best for you and Mother Earth. Inner Gold Demystified
By Robert A. Johnson When we awaken to a new possibility in our lives, we often see it first in another person. Part of us that has been hidden is about to emerge, but it doesn’t go directly from our unconscious to becoming conscious. We project our inner gold onto someone else and suddenly we’re consumed with her. She is so luminous she glows in the dark. If we observe the things we attribute to her, we experience our own depth and meaning. Projecting our inner gold offers the best chance for an advance in consciousness. The exchange of gold is a mystery. It is our gold, but it’s too heavy for us, so we need someone else to carry it. That person becomes synonymous with meaning. We follow her everywhere. Her smile raises us to heavenly heights, her frown hurls us to hellish depths. We are rarely conscious of this process, and our gold bounces around everywhere. We don’t understand how much of what we perceive in others and the outside world is really ourselves. It is helpful to understand that when you give someone your gold to carry, you obscure them from you as a person. Carrying someone’s gold is a serious responsibility. If you are holding someone’s gold, someone’s positive projection, hold it carefully and be ready to give it back with just a moment’s notice. Some people collect gold and refuse to return it when the time comes. They gather an entourage of followers and exploit them. When we find ourselves clinging to someone, caught by an unconscious grip, it can be difficult to let go. But it is possible. Journey To Inner Beauty
By Samana Benedetti True beauty is the inner journey of self discovery – “know thyself and know the whole world.” I teach holistic esthetics and massage using what I call the five point star theory: 1) Exercise; 2) Diet; 3) Supplements; 4) Body care products; and 5) Stress maintenance tools. First, exercise at least 20 minutes, three to five times per week, and be consistent. You can practice yoga, walk your dog, or do anything else you enjoy. Second, choose a careful diet that includes protein, fresh fruits, veggies, healthy fats and carbohydrates. Third, take supplements such as probiotics, omega oils, and Vitamins B, C and E. Fourth, the products you use in and on your body should be organic and clean. Be cautious with hair dyes and sexual lubricants (coconut oil is best). Fifth, keep a journal, meditate and take quiet time alone regularly. Addressing each of these areas on a daily or consistent basis creates balance and a radiance of energy – a glow, a twinkle and brightness in the eyes, a clear mind, and a calm heart. Some clients who come in with an issue, or want better health and appearance, expect a simple treatment or product they can purchase that will magically take the pain or the wrinkles away. It would be easy to promise the world just to fill that one spot in the appointment book or make that commissioned sale. This is how most of the world operates. However, I teach my students that building trust is more important, and both client and therapist benefit from this. Suggesting a self caring and well rounded daily routine empowers the individual to take charge of his or her life, health and beauty. And they continue coming back to learn more. Take A Moment, Relax

Take a moment to relax your mind despite the chores, social media obligations, or business or family demands today. Take this single moment for yourself. Look out the window, see the sky or the mountains, smell a flower or the rain, sense the ocean or the sun. And, take a deep breath. Yes, you are here on the earth. You are on Maui, one of the most desired places in the world. You made it! You had the bravery to listen to your inner voice, and the courage to move or travel to Maui despite all odds. Or, you were blessed to be born here. Take another breath. Reconnect with your body’s center – your navel. Allow in the nurturing of the universe. Open your heart a bit more and tap yourself on your shoulders. Give yourself an applause that you got this far. Enjoy this moment fully. The journey within can continue and take you where your soul most desires for you to be. Be that journey. Where’s The Kingdom Of God?
By Rich Ralston I find the phrase attributed to Jesus – “The kingdom of God is within you” – quite interesting. The type of energy work that I practice is founded on the understanding I have acquired from using subtle energy. The word ‘God’ is what I refer to as the Prime Creator, or in other words, the positive and negative polarity energies that come from the universe and are used through divine intelligence centered in our spirit. The spirit is located behind the heart chakra; it is the energy connection that holds all things into existence for the physical body and our spiritual consciousness. The word ‘kingdom’ can represent the potential of our fullest expression as spiritual beings. We have the opportunity to manifest whatever we choose, using the subtle energy provided by the Prime Creator. By using the divine energy of the Prime Creator, we become co-creators with it. The Book of Genesis says that humans have been given dominion over every living thing on earth. Therefore, it is our responsibility as co-creators to use our power for the benefit of the world. Unfortunately, some have used this power to create domination rooted in personal greed. This can be corrected if humans learn to use their power for the good of the whole. Through the practices of meditation and prayer, one can learn to work in unison with the Prime Creator to better our world. The phrase “the kingdom of God is within you” brings to light our responsibility to be co-creators with it. Be careful what you manifest because you reap what you sow. Journey Into Stillness
By Erin Pillman What is your favorite vehicle for journeying within? Is it the breath? A nice, strong vinyasa flow, or a gentle one? Is it a seated meditation practice? Buddhist? Mindfulness? Mantra? Is it a walk through the forest, or a day in the garden? Or is it a melody, a rhythm, a song? It seems to me that in these extraordinary times of great change in which we live, it’s not so much about how we journey within, but that we do so. In Marianne Williamson’s book The Gift of Change, she writes, “The only way to gain power in a world that is moving too fast is to learn to slow down. And the only way to spread one’s influence wide is to learn to go deep. The world we want for ourselves and our children will not emerge from electronic speed but rather from a spiritual stillness that takes root in our souls. Then, and only then, will we create a world that reflects the heart instead of shattering it.” So how will we go deep? How will we create stillness in our ever-accelerating world? How will we create a world that reflects our true essence, instead of the noise of the current collective awareness? We do all of this by journeying within. This is the hero’s journey, and the time is now to step fully into the highest version of our greatness. It’s time now to live from a place of stillness, wisdom and love. So thank you for journeying with me. I appreciate you. And I look forward to seeing the world that we create together by committing to showing up fully in both our inner and outer worlds.

Time To Dive Inward
By Maurgana Stiastny We all are on a journey, having been gifted this amazing life. The Buddhists call it your precious human birth. This is it. It’s not a dress rehearsal, and there are no guarantees you will come back in this human form. It’s your movie. In my experience, the inner landscape is much more interesting than the outer environment. We all are heading towards the center of ourselves as we dance this magical dance of life, learning and growing. It seems to be moving more quickly and with greater intensity, requiring us to wake up. In reality, we already are awake inside the veils of illusion that obscure our essence or true nature. I love the image of the spiral, which has been used for thousands of years to signify this journey of awakening, of presence. The spiral can represent the path leading from outer phenomena and consciousness to our inner essence. In nature, the spiral represents that all life begins from the core and spirals outward. By mimicking nature and diving inward, we can evolve outward, and grow, expand and bloom. Take time to reflect, to meditate and to be more present in your life, in your relations, in your self. This can be done in small moments throughout the day. Tune in to your breathing. Stand on the earth barefoot. Sit quietly for a moment when you get in your car before you drive away. Drop in to yourself. Treat yourself with kindness and love. Give gratitude for everything. Whatever you are doing, do it wholeheartedly. Connect with your physical heart in the center of your chest and move from there. Greet friends from that open-hearted place. You will be amazed at the results. Our Arrival At Awareness

Pain is only possible while living on the outskirts of Love, but here in the wilderness of her heart there is a band of prophets praying in the form of poetry and dancing wildly with the trees in ecstatic and drunken gestures of pure-joy overflowing for the Beloved. They sing crazed love-songs all night, even long after the fires have become golden glowingembers, and pause only once for a moment of silence as the sun softly kisses the cheek of the earth with light once again, then back to whirling their way to the One. Once in a while, a traveler like ourselves with enough courage to leave behind paths of the familiar will stumble into their camp unaware, and the whole gypsy-group will stop what they’re doing and bow in reverence to that lost tourist, chanting: “welcome home God, we’ve been awaiting your arrival at awareness, are you ready to accept?” If the traveler is ready (to let go of their ego’s understanding), they will immediately recognize themselves as the Friend, and bow in return saying: “I Am.” And then become one of those lunatic lovers of Source. If not, the poor-pilgrim, having pierced the veil of illusion and thought it to be a hallucination, leaves that forest in a hurry as if haunted by the ghost of Love. Krishna Das Kirtan Wallah
By Mike Crall There always has been a recognizable quality in the music of Krishna Das. The mantras, names and prayers he adopted during his years in India have a deep undercurrent of Western familiarity. His voice reminds one of Johnny Cash or Leonard Cohen. His melodies, and even his re-workings of traditional chants or prayers, seamlessly borrow from American blues and folk, comfortably referencing gospel classics like Amazing Grace and Jesus On The Mainline. His music effortlessly captures the spirits of both East and West – the kirtan wallah of India and the wayfaring stranger of America. In his 14th album, Kirtan Wallah (which means “one who sings kirtan”), Krishna Das fully embraces his American roots in rock and country and yet embodies the spirit of deeply devotional Indian chants. There are definitely some traditional melodies – for instance, the opening chant, Radhe Govinda, would be right at home in a Hindu temple, with Krishna Das’s rich baritone voice and harmonium leading the response. But at its heart, this album is a natural confluence of his musical streams, with the bansuri flute weaving its way through acoustic guitars and country swing, and the tabla and kartals underscoring melodies that would fit well in the Townes Van Zandt catalog. While it’s certainly noteworthy that as he evolves as a kirtan wallah, Krishna Das continues to move closer to his Western roots, the heart of this latest album is still in the Names that he sings. Kirtan is the spiritual practice of calling out to the Self through these Divine Names, and the depth of Krishna Das’s devotion to this practice is revealed in his singing. Krishna Das will join Ram Dass for his annual Thanksgiving Sunday Satsang on November 30 at Makawao Union Church, also a food drive for the Maui Food Bank. He will headline on Monday, December 1 for his annual “enCHANTing Evening of Kirtan” at Makawao Union Church. See Calendar Listings.
Expressing Gratitude
By Debbie Dehm As I go inward and think of all the things I have learned that have helped me on my path, one of the most important has been to be grateful. As I write this on my birthday, I am reflecting on how far I have come in a half century of life, and how far I still want to go. I am feeling so much gratitude for all my friends, teachers and loved ones who have helped me along the way. I’m sure I would not have made it this far without them. I am grateful to live on Maui, where the weather is beautiful and the energy is magical. When things are not going well in my life, sometimes I forget to feel grateful. The more I complain and worry, the worse they get. When I can remind myself to find something to be grateful for, and count all my blessings, I see that things turn around. I used to pray and ask for things from God the way a lot of people do, but for a while now I only pray my gratitude. I also say I am grateful for the things that haven’t shown up yet, and that I have faith they will when it is time. In this way, I express gratitude for blessings not yet received. When I learned the Ishaya’s Ascension technique, the monks taught us that the three most uplifting emotions are praise, gratitude and love. The meditation they teach is based on these three emotions. They said it is sometimes hard to skip right to love, so they advised to start with praise, then gratitude for someone or something; and that can take you to love. Try it!
