Bring What You Most Desire Into Your Life

By Eric T. Richter “You attract into your life not what you want, but what you are. It all comes down to thought – what you believe, you become,â€? says Dr. Wayne Dyer, best-selling author, motivational speaker and workshop leader. Dr. Dyer is presenting a weekend intensive, “Mastering the Art of Manifestation,â€? October 23-24 at the Westin Maui Resort and Spa and graciously took time for an interview with Maui Vision Magazine. What can people gain from taking his seminar? “Unlimited prosperity if they believe in it,â€? he says. “The theme of manifesting is something that has intrigued me my entire lifetime.â€? Indeed, two of his books, Manifest Your Destiny and The Power of Intention and recent ďŹ lm “The Shiftâ€? have all dealt with the subject in depth. According to the intensive promotional materials, “Mastering the Art of Manifestation focuses on the ancient principle of manifesting through the timeless art of meditation. With characteristic insight and clarity, Wayne teaches the process of meditation as a way to streamline your thoughts, desires, and goals, and to bring what you most desire into your life. Whether you realize it or not, you struggle with built-in societal barriers that obstruct your inner potential.â€? Through learning WayneĘźs Nine Spiritual Principles of Manifesting, the intensive promises to clear away that which constricts you and to help illuminate new paths to achieving your truest goals. But does Wayne truly believe people can become powerful manifesters just through meditation? “Meditation is the door-opener to get you peaceful, to get quiet and into conscious contact with your Source. Everything originates from non-being,â€? he said. “You can align yourself with

the Source that manifests everything, the ďŹ eld of intention from which all things are intended, to which all things return. There is a spark of God within every single one of us. If you think like God thinks, you can become part of the creative process. YouĘźll begin to see attracting into your life all things that you once thought were impossible.â€? But, what about the current ďŹ nancial crisis – what does he believe that represents? “It represents a whole group of people who believe in ďŹ nancial crisis. You become what you think about all day long.â€? Wayne has journeyed a long way since 1976 when his ďŹ rst self-book, Your Erroneous Zones, was published. Eventually selling an estimated 35 million copies, it became one of the best-selling books of all time. But success didnĘźt fall into his lap entirely through meditation. Online encyclopedia Wikipedia states, “Although initial sales were thin, Dyer quit his teaching job and began a publicity tour of the United States, doggedly pursuing bookstore appearances and media interviews Ęťout of the back of his station wagonĘź, according to Michael Korda, (former editor-in-chief of Simon & Schuster).â€? The book rose on the best-seller lists “before book publishers even noticed what was happening,â€? and led to national television talk shows including Merv GrifďŹ n, The Tonight Show, and Phil Donahue. Now, Wayne regularly appears on PBS fundraising shows. A Maui resident, Wayne does all of his writing here. Deeply appreciative, he ďŹ nds that “this is a place where God breathes in and out deeply and helps me to do the same, perhaps because of the ocean. ItĘźs one of those mystical places. My writing is always the best while I am here.â€? He feels his deepest insight is “the recogni-

tion that I am not here as a human being having a spiritual experience, but as a spiritual being having a human experience. This realization helps me to understand what Jesus said, ĘťWith God all things are possible.Ęźâ€? Despite all the fame, success and help he has given to others through teaching and books, he feels his greatest accomplishment this lifetime is “raising eight children that all have love in their hearts, and that all have open hearts and open minds.â€? What are his newest projects? He just ďŹ nished the motion picture The Shift, returned from a speaking tour in Australia, and is writing a new book about his father, about ďŹ nding his fatherĘźs grave and making peace with him. (Wayne spent much of his adolescence in orphanages.) Last year, he was diagnosed with incurable leukemia. Undaunted, Wayne says, “I just know my life canĘźt be threatened, so I love it and am at peace with it.â€? Every day he wakes up and is the most excited “that IĘźm still breathing. Just the opportunity to serve in some way, in some capacity. My life is about giving and living by the Tao. My ďŹ rst words are ĘťThank you!Ęźâ€? Thinking Outside The Box

Lately, the current “economic crisisâ€? has been on my mind. Despite interest rates hovering near zero, the recovery isnĘźt really taking off. I kept hearing they couldnĘźt be lowered any further, with zero being the limit. But then I wondered, what if interest rates could be lowered to a negative percentage point, say minus 1 percent? What if, under a special program, the Federal Reserve loaned the banks $100 and they were only obligated to repay $99? And what if, under this program, banks were required to reďŹ nance all existing mortgages and loans to 1 percent interest lower? Hmm‌ an interesting idea if carried even further. TheyĘźd still make the same money, and consumer balances would stay the same, but the consumer would save. From Internet research, U.S. consumer mortgages stand at $14.6 trillion, with consumer debt on credit cards, car loans, etc. standing at $2.5 trillion, totaling $17.1 trillion. Lowering the interest paid 1 percent on all the loans outstanding would save consumers $171 billion in the ďŹ rst year, and then continuously in following years. If spread around amongst only the 138 million taxpayers, it would amount to a little over $1200 average apiece. Now that may just be creative thinking, but itĘźs also Food for Thought! -Eric T. Psychic John Edward Reminds Us To Love

By Liah Howard John Edward, an internationally acclaimed psychic medium, has captivated audiences worldwide for over 25 years. He uses his unique abilities to connect people with those they have loved, lost and have passed on. Deeply compelling, often startling, and occasionally humorous, his down-to-earth approach has earned him a vast and loyal following. I recently had the pleasure of interviewing John while he was in Honolulu promoting his November appearance there. He began our talk by passionately describing the cornerstone of his work: “I believe my mission in life is to be one of the individuals to carry the torch of teaching and helping others to communicate, validate, and appreciate their loved ones...while they are still alive.â€? He remembered back to 1985 when he received the call to bring this important message to the masses. “I had attended a Joan Rivers event that evening, and on the third encore she changed the tone of the night by saying that her husband had recently passed and she did not get to tell him she loved him. She then encouraged everyone in the room to turn to the people they came with that night and to tell them that they love them.â€? At this point in his life, John was working in the medical profession at a large hospital. He left the medical ďŹ eld and entered the realm of the metaphysical. He reminisced about that shift: “I received a great deal of support and help from my loved ones, and non-physical beings and guides on the other side.â€? He described the goals he set out to accomplish by saying, “I want to help people to avert the disappointment and missed opportunities with their lives by assisting them to say what needs to be said instead of needing to consult a psychic/medium 20 years later to convey the unspoken words of love.â€? John currently travels to about 40 states and eight countries a year. When asked about this intense schedule he heartily responded, “I love what I do and I have a ridiculous amount of energy, which I attribute to genetics as well as having been given a task, and receiving assistance from those Ęťon the other sideĘź who help to heal me on an energetic level.â€? He explained that, “Being in balance and feeling empowered contribute to my well being.â€? To take care of himself, he exercises and practices meditation, prayer, rosary work, and psychic self-defense. In addition to the work he does around the world, he is also a loving husband and father of two children. I could feel the glow of pride as he spoke about his children and how parenting has positively affected his work. I have no doubt that he takes every opportunity he gets to tell his family he loves them in person, by phone, by Skype, and through the “inner phoneâ€? as well. John Edward is a man who takes his work to heart and gives 100 percent to all he does. He is, as he describes, “on a mission to uplift the global consciousness.â€? You can be part of this by reading his books, attending the November event in Honolulu, or visiting his new web site. You can help to carry the torch of love to others by reaching out and telling them that you love them! Author of six best-selling books, John Edward is well known for his television shows “Crossing Over with John Edwardâ€? and “John Edward Cross Country.â€? He presents lectures and mediumship events worldwide. Check out his new website, InďŹ niteQuest.com which features videos, webinars, and classes in metaphysics. Two Luminaries Team Up To Talk And Teach Yoga By Michael Crall Two world-renowned teachers – John Friend and Ram Dass – will collaborate for the second time on October 9th-10th at The Studio Maui in Haiku. Here they will reveal their inspired journeys, personal discoveries, and their takes on the evolution of yoga and spirituality in the 21st century. Celebrating the 40th anniversary of Ram DassĘź best-selling, spiritual treasure trove book Be Here Now, these two luminaries will reflect, contemplate and discuss the bookĘźs origins and present-day yoga. In 1967, a former Harvard professor and psychedelic researcher, then known as Richard Alpert, journeyed to India for the first time. He discovered a world filled with Spirit, conscious mappers and dedicated practitioners of yogic traditions. His life changed forever in his first meeting with his guru, Neem Karoli Baba, who gave him the name, Ram Dass, which means “Servant of God.â€? Bringing “experiences of Indiaâ€? back to America for a new generation, Ram Dass shared the yoga created from understanding the true nature of reality from these ancient traditions. These included methods to transcend the human experience to higher states of evolutionary awareness, consciousness and spiritual development. In 1967, an eight-year old John Friend lis-

John Friend

tened to stories his mother read to him about yogis who had supernatural powers, hidden knowledge and innate understanding of the mysteries of life. By the age of 18, John had established a routine of sitting meditation, exploring ancient mystic traditions and studying yoga. JohnĘźs journey of study lead him through the most significant influences of yoga in the West, including teachers Swami Kriyananda, Yogi Bhajan, BKS Iyengar, Patabhi Jois and Gurumayi Chidvilasananda. With Gurumayi, he learned and practiced the full range of yoga traditions, schools and methods including devotional chanting, japa, puja, seva, meditation and the intricacies of hatha yoga. John Friend founded Anusara Yoga in 1997. A school of hatha yoga, it unifies life-affirming philosophies of intrinsic goodness with the uni-

versal principles of alignment in an inclusive, creative, like-hearted community. John returns to Maui for his third year of hosting week-long therapeutics training and a public weekend workshop for both newcomers and practicing Anusara Yoga students. The growing popularity and global reach of modern yoga is evident as seen in a New York Times Magazine article about John Friend and Anusara Yoga. In the coming months, they will also publish an article on the life story of Richard Alpert / Ram Dass, his new book Be Love Now and his transcending life experiences from “being here now to “being love now. To celebrate these Anusara programs with the Maui community, Ty Burhoe (Tala Records) and Sarala Dandekar (Darshan Dance) will present their cultural performing arts production, “Dhvani Music and Dance of India, on Friday, October 8th at 7:30 p.m. at the Montessori Auditorium on the campus of the Montessori School of Maui in Makawao. They will be joined by Steve Oda (playing sarode), Akari Ueoka and Malti Carano (Odissi Dancers) for a night of classical music and Odissi dance of India. John Friend will host the evening event, complete with authentic Indian cuisine catered by Monsoon Indian Restaurant. Tickets are $15 cash at the door. For information, or to register for the October 9th-10th weekend events, visit anusara.com.

Death And Loss Bring Forth Love And Acceptance

By Liah Howard Death and loss have been my companions lately. Although they came uninvited, they have opened the doors to my heart and my mind. Tears of grief have softened my way of being in the world. I have had to cope with feeling helpless in the face of my mother fading away at the hands of AlzheimerĘźs and, in the midst of grieving for my mom, my 15-year-old cat Melvin died in my arms, followed by a dear friend dying unexpectedly in the night. As our bodies and minds decline, our spiritual selves emerge more fully, allowing us to come back home to our essence of love – that part of us that has nothing to hide, nothing to gain and nothing to lose. Death invites us to enter into the realm of spirit where we remember we are standing on holy ground, even if it might be a bit rocky. Death can be one of our greatest teachers. As I witness my mom slowly dying from the life she has lived or known, I see her heart expand. Like a child in love with the whole world, she now rejoices in the simplest of things. She is more present in each moment and happier than she has ever been, all of her worries and plans gone. She is merging back into the pure nature of love. My ego resists the loss and then I remember that we are so much more than our bodies and personalities – we are divine spirit expressed in form. Sometimes my mom converses with her deceased mother and father. Clearly, the veil between life and death is becoming very thin for her. This distinct difference between life and death became quite apparent to me when my cat took his last breath cradled in my arms. I was singing to him and he was purring very loudly. I could feel his spirit lift up and depart his frail body. Suddenly, I was holding a mere shell with nobody home. I cried as I let go of the beloved friend who had shared life with me for so many years. Yet I can still feel his presence around me, especially in the mornings when I first awaken. I do believe that our loved ones remain near to share their love with us. I was at the memorial service for my friend and, as so often happens when I attend funerals, she appeared and gave me a message to share. We were in a circle on the beach and she appeared floating over the gathering of grieving friends and family. I heard her laugh and say, “Please know that I am happy to be free and all is well!â€? She then gently offered a blessing to all who were there. Losing my mom, my cat, and my friend have reminded me that there is really no time to waste dwelling on what we donĘźt have or who we havenĘźt become. I feel more compelled than ever to live a life of love and acceptance and to keep my heart and mind as open as possible. Since we never know when our time will come, this is the moment to let our spiritual selves fully emerge. Liah Howard is a psychic/channel and teacher of channeling and intuitive development. By Sankara Jason Skandunas (chef) and Jessica Quinn (nutritionist) have two new ventures: CafĂŠ Prana Nui in the tropidelic school bus at the Haiku Marketplace, and Walafel.com, adjacent to Surf & Sail just across Dairy Road from Kmart. Prana (life-force) Nui (abundance) features organic, local, vegan, high-alkaline and anti-oxidant-rich foods based on Ayurvedic, macrobiotic and tropical-yummy principles. Besides daily specials and a du-jour soup (served with a scoop of quinoa, millet or rice), touted are their Dosha Bowls, made with recommended grains, vegetables and speciďŹ c spices for your Ayurvedic well-being. Three Noodle Bowls (soba) are also available, a deelish kale and seaweed salad with an umeboshi and gomasio dressing, and pupus that include steamed dumplings (tempeh, spinach, caramelized ginger in a ponzu pesto), tempeh skewers in a tandori marinade, and an avo-edamame guacamole with rice crackers and cucumber slices. Everything I have eaten has been in the realm of excellent. A few items have been a bit either salty or caliente for my particularly neko-jita palate, but I suspect this will not be an issue for most — just ask. Also available is Maca-Cacao

Let Love Feed Your Soul

By Suzan Proia There are many stories of survival in our world. We read accounts of hikers lost for days, individuals stranded on rafts, of plane crash survivors who manage to live through their ordeals. Humans are designed to withstand extreme conditions and circumstances. We can live without many physical niceties, but few people would choose to live without love. Many things nourish us. Most people crave human interaction and naturally seek out connections. Physically, we have nutritional requirements but beyond that, we also have emotional and spiritual needs. There are various ways to feed our hearts and souls. One way is through creative pursuits - listening to music, dancing, artistic compositions, communicating through the written word and prayer. These all provide fuel for our spiritual and emotional selves. When we ow toward love, the joys of living are magniďŹ ed. Hints For Feeding Mind, Body And Spirit This Fall By Shelley and Kedar St. John What do you want to feed your mind, body, and spirit this fall? Fall is the season of the harvest, the season of gathering natureĘźs gifts before winterĘźs rest. It is also the beginning of a cycle of turning within personally. After a summer of all types of fun activities, a good dose of wellness awareness, detox cleansing, inspiration, education, and empowerment would be good places to start. It is a perfect time to cleanse your body and lighten yourself for fallĘźs work. In Chinese medicine, the element associated with the autumnal season is metal. It speciďŹ cally relates to our lungs – breathing in more life. It also relates to our large intestines – releasing both physical and emotional excess waste. This is a good time to start a cleanse and choose to keep these organs strong and healthy. By ushing out excesses or improving organ function, three colon therapy sessions and a week or so of juicing may give you a boost of energy and eliminate any potential illness you may have stored away. There are lots of fruits and vegetables available for juicing at harvest time at your local organic farmers market. Or you may be inspired to do a ten-day cleanse with wonderful nourishing soups and juices as well as relaxing spa treatments to strengthen your immune system and prepare you for the winter months. You can also keep it interesting by taking a vegan/or raw food class to learn some new recipes. Yum! Wherever you live, take a look at whatever area of your life needs Do you yearn for love, passion, joy and happiness in Your Life? Call me! I can help you find what is keeping you from having it. balance, whether it is diet, exercise or clarifying your relationships. Look at what is available in your neighborhood for inspiration or support. Whether you join the gym or go to your local yoga studio, get friends in your area to commit to a regular walk/workout. When you are alone, set aside a short amount of time every day in as quiet a place as possible, free from interruptions. Simply sit or lie quietly, either keeping your mind blank or calmly thinking of your lifeĘźs work. After some time, you will ďŹ nd that you receive great help at such moments. Flashes of wisdom and guidance will be revealed to you! So, what do you want to feed your body, mind and soul with in the fall? Take care of yourself – you deserve it – and your body will serve you better! But most of all, open up to more love and support in your life. In 1983, Kedar and Shelley St. John fell in love in Nepal and later married. They had a vision of a community and healing center and created the Temple of Peace Healing Sanctuary in Haiku in 2006. Shelley is a registered nurse, a certiďŹ ed colon therapist and instructor, and licensed esthetician. Kedar is an ordained interfaith minister, a spiritual counselor, holistic health practitioner, techno shaman, musician and teacher of inspired philosophy. Healing Your Unhealthy Relationship With Food By Maribeth Theisen When I am at a party and people learn that I do hypnotherapy, they immediately ask, can you help me lose weight? As I mingle, I hear people discussing the latest diets or the doctor who gives them hormone injections to lose weight. Their focus is on the number of pounds they have lost or gained. And with good reason: a recent article in the Journal of the American Medical Association reports that obesity is present in over 68 percent of the population, resulting in increased risks of diabetes, some cancers, and cardiovascular disease. Because of the mediaʼs obsession with thinness, many of us care more about how we look than how healthy we are, and drift from one fad diet to another. Of course, the best way to shed pounds is to eat less and exercise more – itʼs that simple. But why do so many people have difficulty motivating themselves to do this? Answers to these questions may give you some insight into your own relationship with food. 1. Do you eat when you are not hungry, bored, sad, angry or anxious? 2. Do you use food to reward or comfort yourself? 3. Do you want to eat in private so you can eat larger helpings or something “forbidden?” 4. Do you eat slowly, really tasting the food? Feeling its texture? Or, are you distracted by the TV, magazine, or the interior dialogue inside your head? 5. Do you love and appreciate your body and eat healthy foods that nourish it?

6. Do you think of dieting as deprivation? If so, it is guaranteed that you will stop dieting and return to overeating. 7. Do you constantly think about what you ate, will eat, what you weigh, and how you look? The key to ending the obsession with food is to realize that food is not your enemy. True healing results when you learn to love your body, when you respect and honor food as a gift from God or from nature, and when you are conscious of your emotions. Here are a few tips: 1. Only eat when you are calm and undistracted. If you experience a negative emotion, talk to someone, meditate, or journal about it before you eat. 2. Do not use food as a reward or for comfort. Take time for a walk, a bubble bath, or an inner conversation. 3. Treat your body in loving ways. Think positive thoughts about all the amazing miracles that take place in your body each moment. Get a massage. Exercise. 4. Give up on diets that leave you feeling deprived or rebellious and angry. Buy and carry healthy foods with you. 5. Donʼt go to a party or buffet if you are hungry or emotional. Take a few moments to eat a healthy snack and do some deep breathing before you go. 6. Record or use affirmations about loving and appreciating yourself in new and creative ways. Take time to see yourself this way, really feeling good inside. 7. If you are still challenged by old patterns, get support from a friend, support group, or professional. Your life is a precious miracle, and you are a unique and special expression of that life. May you discover and experience that more and more each day. Maribeth Theisen, LCSW, CHt, provides counseling, hypnotherapy and other modalities that result in rapid, permanent change. She lost 90 pounds many years ago and has kept if off! She is co-host of Maui Well Being TV show. Visit MauiTransformations.com or call 808.269.2923.

Quantum Medicine Congress Examines Mind/Body Wellness

By Marci Winters A historic first-time event, The World Congress of Quantum Medicine is taking place on Oahu, November 5-7. This intensive three-day interactive program is aimed toward alternative health practitioners who want to connect with the elite in the fields of Quantum Medicine. Expect an unparalleled learning experience, integrating the most innovative mind/body medicine with the world of quantum physics. Alternative healers and educators at the forefront of the Quantum movement will be attending. Dr. Amit Goswami, the quantum physicist featured in the documentary “What the Bleep Do We Know,” Dr. Yury Kronn, Ph.D., world-renowned research scientist and theoretician in the field of subtle energy and Patrick K Porter, Ph.D, pre-eminent expert in mind-based wellness, join others on the cutting edge of quantum medicine, coined “the medicine of the future.” The documentary film, “The Quantum Activist,” about acclaimed author and quantum physicist Dr. Amit Goswami will be screened prior to the congress on Thursday, November 4 at the Japanese Cultural Center. Amit shares his journey to enlightenment as it bridges the gap between God and Science. The unlimited potential of consciousness is explored and how this revelation can help us to enrich our lives. The film speaks of the genuine paradigm shift making us aware that the foundations of reality are rooted not in the material world, but rather in the realm of consciousness itself. According to Deepak Chopra, “Dr. Amit Goswami, as usual, has the most brilliant insights into how consciousness conceives, governs, constructs and becomes biology.” International teacher and speaker, Dr. Goswami is the author of 11 books, which have sold over 50,000 copies in the U.S. and numerous papers translated into 9 languages. Honor Your Soulʼs Needs

By Nancy Friedrich Honoring the needs of the soul will bring more harmony and balance into our lives. This will mitigate depression, anxiety, illness, and substance abuse. When our souls are intact, we are more functional human beings - both personally and communally. What fills you up? What gives you the inner feeling of satisfaction, peace, or joy? Often it is the small things, like hiking in nature, dancing, drumming, and connecting to your spiritual path. In Shamanism, the healing work is often called “soul doctoring” because one works with healing the soul by finding the spiritual root of a problem or illness. The most common form of Shamanic healing, “soul retrieval,” is when the shamanic practitioner, upon the clientʼs request, performs a ceremonial healing that tracks down lost soul parts so they can be returned. Whenever there has been an emotional or physical trauma, a piece of the soul (essence) leaves in order to survive and not experience the trauma, remaining pure essence. Soul loss is a brilliant survival mechanism that enables us to deal with pain or loss in life. After a soul retrieval, clients begin integrating their soul part(s) and welcoming them home. We do this through learning how the returned parts can help our lives and acknowledging the gifts and strengths returned. By integrating the whole soul, we have the benefit of having more of our essence “at home” in our bodies to help experience life, to grow and accomplish our soulʼs purpose. Knowing how to heal the soul shows us how to empower and strengthen our souls and hence our health and well-being. Attend Nancyʼs introductory evening “Ancient Shamanic Healing,” Wednesday, November 10, 6 - 7:30 pm at the Makawao Union Church Community Hall (on Baldwin Avenue) by donation. Nancy will teach Michael Harnerʼs, The Way of the Shaman, Journeying, Power and Healing workshop on November 13th &14th. Call 808.269.5137 for more info and workshop registration or visit shamanicjourneying@gmail.com.

Make Conscious Choices

By Jeff Von Schmauder Many foods enter our bodies each day, but how often do we consider the impact they have on us? Each day our ears pick up thousands of sounds and we literally make thousands of decisions on a variety of matters. We feed our souls tremendous daily nourishment. Consider the notion that what we eat turns into thought and that everything that goes into our bodies becomes a part of us in one way or another. This input/ output exchange is a very important process that I have become quite selective about. What am I eating, listening to, watching, and tasting? Does it ring true with my truth and bring out my highest and best self? If the answer is no to either part of the equation, then I usually re-evaluate the input. I constantly refine this process. It seems the more we become aware of this, the easier it is to make healthier choices and navigate though life. Keep eating and nourishing your mind, body and spirit. Realize that you can choose the type of input as to who and what you become and make conscious choices about what you want your lives to be filled with. At the time that I am writing this article, it is Rosh Hashanah – we are starting the New Year. I consider each day a new beginning and we have the opportunity each day to fill up with health and well-being. Itʼs so important to keep the vital aspects of awe, wonder and exploration in our lives. To ponder, question and stretch our thoughts is an important part of our humanity. If you truly are what you eat, decide what you want to be and keep eating with consciousness. Jeff Von Schmauder is the founder of Union Yoga, a Hawaii based style of yoga grounded in the tradition of the Aloha spirit. Classes are offered to all levels. Life Among The Spirits By Mark Sheehan Have you ever had shamanic dreams? Have you ever wondered what it would be like to be in touch with the spirits, have them coach you and guide you? Andrea Kalff got Ęťthe callĘź to be a shaman. In fact, she kept rejecting the call. I wondered why so I asked her. She said, “ItĘźs like having guests 24/7 and you have to serve them all the time. ItĘźs a serious and heavy responsibility!â€? Some years ago, Andrea was invited to attend a conference on shamanism in her native Bavaria. She had no interest but, with urging, she went. Avoiding the seminars and staying to herself, she got a tap on the shoulder. “The shaman wants to talk to you,â€? they said. She declined, but when the tapper returned to say, “We know what is wrong with you,â€? she went over to meet none other than KoreaĘźs most famous shaman, Kim Keum Hwa! What was wrong with Andrea was that she had shin byong, the shaman sickness. Kim Keum Hwa then told Andrea about her last six incarnations and that she had spent her life looking for her. She then invited her to come to Korea. Married with three daughters, Andrea had no interest in visiting Asia, but a diagnosis of cancer later changed her mind. Kim Keum Hwa not only cured her cancer and her shin byong, she initiated Andrea into her shamanic tradition, an experience that required Andrea to past many tests to prove her abilities. I met Andrea a few months ago through a mutual friend. She knew immediately about my health challenges – ditto for my wife, Sonja. Running her hands over SonjaĘźs body, Andrea reported physical, emotional and psychic personal facts. Sonja described feeling “like a vacuum cleaner was sucking out pains.â€? In the days after treatment, Sonja felt an activation of old traumas that helped her to heal some emotional wounds. When she came to my house, Andrea

Shaman Andrea Kalff immediately sensed ancient, restless Hawaiian spirits on the land. They spoke to her in Hawaiian, telling her what she needed to do to clear the land. In a short order, disruptive tenants left the land and a more mature, cooperative group arrived. “How do you acquire these talents?â€? I asked. Andrea believes that we all have some ability to sense spirit energies, but that “most people donĘźt want to develop them because of the heavy requirements.â€? Yet the gifts are awesome. Andrea always works with her hands and the spirits work through her. “I see people like a glass of water,â€? she says, “but only what spirits allow me to see.â€? This gift enables her to detect diseases and, more importantly, their underlying causes. One cancer patientĘźs problem was a bad relationship. When she ended the relationship, the cancer left. In another case, Andrea was able to detect a frightening misdiagnosis

that led to a far less invasive procedure. Working with local novice shaman, John Elder, Andrea has been guided to move to Maui, an amazing decision since her work is in great demand in Europe, Mexico and Korea. She expects that most of her clients will come from overseas but she will be doing energy clearing work for local homes, land and businesses. It was just such a clearing that provided funds for her life on Maui. Andrea was asked to help a prominent German executive whose business was oundering. After working with that man and clearing his ofďŹ ce, his business dramatically returned to proďŹ tability. Andrea often helps doctors, nurses and hospice workers clear themselves from the energy they pick up from their patients “because they are so exposed to unhealthy energies, they need to keep clearing.â€? Andrea claims that an illness has an energy frequency that can linger in a room or house - thatĘźs why itĘźs necessary to clear a house when you move in so you donĘźt inherit the energy of the past owners. “If the previous owners or tenants were ďŹ ghting a lot, the next occupants will wind up arguing too,â€? she claims. Cleaning, it turns out, is fundamental to her practice. “Everybody cleans the oor, the dishes and their clothesâ€? she says. “In the same way, property needs to be cleaned of disharmony.â€? Working with spirits requires an exchange of some kind. Only a shaman can know what the exchange might be. When so many business owners are struggling to make ends meet and many properties sit unsold, it may be time to try this ancient and proven system for clearing and cleansing. Mark Sheehan has been a real estate broker on Maui for 25 years. He specializes in green and sustainable properties. He can be reached at 808.283.2158. Add BeneďŹ cial Bugs To Your Gut! By Judy Phillips How would you like to renovate your digestive system with beneďŹ cial bacteria? Most of us are familiar with lactic-acid or dairy-based probiotics (like the Acidophilous contained in yogurt), but there is not a lot of information regarding soil-based organisms or SBOs. Soil-based organisms were not on anyoneĘźs radar as an alternative until a research scientist made the connection between them and gastrointestinal health. He isolated and scrutinized how various strains interacted with each other and when he evaluated them against dairy-based probiotics, he discovered that SBOs were superior in every way. The gut of every healthy human being has roughly three and half pounds of good bacteria that create essential vitamins and hormones. These bacteria, of which soil-based organisms are a critical source, assist your digestive system to break down carbohydrates, fats and proteins, and to get rid of waste. To a greater extent, they battle against undesirable micro-organisms (like yeasts, fungi, bacteria and parasites) to keep their numbers limited. Supplementing with traditional dairybased probiotics does not always take care of the problem. In some cases, probiotics such as Acidophilus or BiďŹ dobacteria will not endure a trip through the hostile, acidic environment of the stomach and gut, and are unable to implant in the intestinal wall due to conditions created by the typical Western diet. On the other hand, soil-based organisms, which are extremely robust biologically, will! Soil-based organisms are tiny microbes that live in soil. They were an important part of our

diets before the industrial age but through decades of farmers using toxic pesticides, insecticides and fertilizers, soil scientists have determined that the top soil (the top six inches of soil) that grows our fruits and vegetables is biologically dead – completely void of SBOs. It is important to remember that SBOs carry out the same job in the digestive tract as they do in soil. They preserve the balance against bad bacteria, which do a lot of damage if given the advantage. Just the tiniest imbalances can result in gastrointestinal distress, and, if left unattended, could possibly generate chronic imbalances

Promote Your Business This Winter!

such as constipation, IBS, leaky gut and Crohns Disease. As soon as SBOs enter your gut, they actively hunt down and devour any opportunistic pathogens. Their arsenal also contains a powerful antiviral action that assists in protecting you against infection. Numerous research studies also suggest that once SBOs have taken hold in your gut, they de-scale your colon and intestines of old fecal matter. And they are extremely hearty, possessing a stable potency and shelf life of over ďŹ ve years. One of the most desirable characteristics of SBOs is that they are not dependent on a healthy gut environment to function and will colonize under the most unfavorable conditions and initiate feeding on intestinal waste and pathogens, and in return secrete nutrients that a starving gut needs to recover. A healthy gut has hundreds of strains, some of them exclusive to the individual. Inundating the gut with a small number of supplemental strains may even exacerbate any imbalance and could distress the immune system. Thankfully, there is a probiotic supplement composed of 30 strains of beneďŹ cial bacteria and other microora (soil-based organisms) and backed by published peer-reviewed clinical research. I highly recommend it, and use it daily myself! Judy Phillips, M.H. is a master herbalist, author of numerous articles, and president of LLĘźs Magnetic Clay, Inc., a company dedicated to informing the public of the beneďŹ ts of detoxiďŹ cation, remineralization and healing. Try Restorative Massage

By Rev. Debbie Dehm L.M.T. Would you like to experience a unique massage, one that will invigorate you while it relaxes your body? If so, Japanese Restorative massage is for you. This technique is derived from Chinese medicine and follows the meridians of the body, unblocking the flow of chi to restore balance and remove pain (chi is the energy of the body; meridians are blocked energy channels caused by pain). It is a set series of steps proven to work efficiently to heal many conditions of imbalance and was designed for jujitsu students to use on each other after a strenuous workout so it is perfect for an athletic person. As a massage therapist, I have experienced many types of massage, and Japanese Restorative massage is still my favorite technique to receive. I appreciate the fact that it covers every part of the body, arms, legs, back, stomach, face and head, hands and feet. I am very happy that it does not leave me sore and feeling bruised the next day from being worked too deeply. The practitioner can work deeply into the muscle without pain and remove the blockages in the flow of chi. This massage can also be given at a lighter pressure and will work in a more energetic manner that is also very effective because it stays within the meridians of the body. Some may feel it is very close to temple style lomi lomi, (as the originator lived in Hawaii and borrowed certain aspects) but it incorporates pressure points that are not found in lomi lomi. Traditionally, it is given using a secret formula lotion that gives even further benefit to relieve sore muscles. The most important thing is how you will feel – invigorated and restored and even better the next day! Debbie Dehm is a nationally-certified Hawaii licensed massage therapist and reiki master. Return To Your Spiritual Roots

By Eliza Bassett This summer has been a very rough time for many walking this planet. Time and time again, we have been shown issues to be faced, resolved and transformed, both personally and globally. Some people have been shoved into new situations without a script or plan or forethought. Fear, for others, has been thick and paralyzing; we have been rendered powerless by overwhelming and seemingly uncontrollable emotions. At those points, weĘźve had to wake up and remember that thereĘźs a different way to thrive. One suggestion is to return to our spiritual training and apply it – now – daily. Remembering our favorite teacherĘźs instructions – breathe deeply, ground, center, then cleanse our thoughts, smudge our bodies and living spaces – we attain a brief moment of clarity, peace and understanding. Returning again and again to the practice, soon the space of tranquility is greater than a brief moment. These fears are faced and healed. Perhaps calling ourselves nuns, monks, initiates, solitary practitioners, whatever we wish to call this sacred self-nurturing time, we find we must do it. Some are called to the ocean, others to sacred lands. Whatever your calling is, do it. Feed your whole being, especially the subtle body. Eat in a restorative way of all good things in nature. An astrological input – if “somethingâ€? is tugging you to let something that is very precious to you go, perhaps PlutoĘźs transit is asking for a deep transformation around that emotion, thought or item. If you resist too much, youĘźll end up with so very much beyond that bit being taken from you. Use your discernment, seek input from others if needed, and step into this new time, surrendering what you are being asked to release. Trust that something much better is in the queue for you. Eliza Bassett is an astrologer and shamanic practitioner available to assist all during these changing times. Contact her at 808.214.6587 or at astrobulletin@yahoo.com.

A Call To Compassion

By Sheridan K. Hailley In moments when our emotions run high, the ability to have compassion for ourselves is challenged. And yet, it is precisely these moments that call for our compassion. Compassion helps us connect with our feelings more fully; it helps us to learn from our choices while we are embraced in gentle acceptance. Understanding these emotionally intense moments more deeply can help us to have empathy and compassion for ourselves and for others. When we repeatedly experience emotional energy, a pattern has formed at a very dense, physical level in our beings. During our formative years, most of us have had traumatic experiences. The effects of trauma include learning that has become hard-wired in the core level of our brains. Subsequently, in moments that challenge us, the brain is responding with an intense “fight or flightâ€? response when one is not actually needed. For example, a “flightâ€? response might involve intense fear or overwhelming thoughts that disempower us. We may then avoid facing a current challenge. Traumatic stress may take many guises – an explosive, anger outburst, chronic fatigue or addictive behavior. Since learning is at a dense, crystallized level of our beings, it is resilient. It resists our willpowerĘźs efforts to change. But change is possible if we can recognize that traumatic stress has been activated within us. We can then call upon compassion to embrace this traumatized aspect of ourselves. Our emotionally intense responses can be precious jewels that teach and inspire us back to wholeness. The next time that your emotions run high, I invite you to pause and look beneath the surface of the situation – with all of your compassion. Sheridan K. Hailley, MA.CPT, has over 20 years of experience specializing in therapies for trauma and trauma-related issues. See ad and calendar in this issue. Contact Sheridan at 808.344.4410 or visit soulfirecounseling.com. Ask about personal stories of healing. Your feedback and questions are welcome.

Love Elevates‌

By Paul W. Gangnier Today, my thoughts turn to how each day, each moment and each thing are gifts from Source and how very grateful I am for those precious gifts that Source has given me. I have found that when we are not in touch with the true wonder of ourselves and our surroundings, we are in a place that is disconnected from Source and all of Sourceʟs miracles. Connection to Source means being one with our true selves. Loveʟs energy matches Source and is the strongest energy in the universe, raising not only ourselves up from the grips of negative energies and behaviors, but elevating the people around us as well. This positive love-energy radiates out from us and attracts like-minded people and energies to us, further benefiting our growth. All of my life I have enthusiastically engaged spiritually, drawing to me the unlimited possibilities that Source has to offer. The list of loving and healing modalities that I have experienced and studied is vast, with each helping me to grow spiritually by releasing negative energies. The first lesson was the lesson of intention, next was to open, then to fully welcome in growth. The painful, confusing lessons of release challenged and brought me right back to intention, and then delivered me like a new baby full of love and life to peace and calm, granting my all time goal of connection with my loving God. My quest to connect with God has turned into a long journey of growth that has allowed me to learn my lessons and learn them well. I pray for the wisdom that will guide me through the necessary changes important for my growth to my eternal life. I honor each lifetime granted me with its own special purpose, each guiding me to God. How Can We Live More Sustainably?

We don’t need a weatherman to tell us which way the wind is blowing. Our world is changing week by week. Clearly we have to change our way of living and working. But how? Our political process is stuck so 20th century, dominated by old style developers and the resort mentality. ‘Forward thinking’ happens elsewhere. But what can WE do HERE?

Well, WE CAN:

• band together with people who are committed to similar goals. • improve our networking skills as we agitate for new ways of thinking and doing. • change how we live by growing more, using less, recycling more, sharing resources. • do eco audits of our homes to conserve. • buy energy star appliances. • form neighborhood garden collectives. • change our lifestyles to live more simply • search out new technologies like the new electric cars For 30 years I have been seeking sustainable solutions for Maui - to preserve open space, protect shoreline and encouraging people to build green and grow their own food. That’s why I now have several exceptional green properties for sale: solar water and PV systems, bamboo cottage, stream, fruit orchards, gardens, non-toxic materials, water catchment tanks. (not all on same land)

If green is your goal, call me for a consultation. Mark Sheehan (RB) 283-2158 or Paia office, 579-1111.

The Nourishment Of Shakti

By Margaret Phanes Yoga Psychology Meditation is a spiritual approach to consciousness and existence. It is a spiritual practice that delves beyond the surfaces of life and personality to inner realities. A wider perspective is an essential experience of meditation that encompasses consciousness above and below awareness. There is a difference between Western and Eastern psychological approaches. An analogy of a Western approach might focus on a branch or leaves, while an Eastern approach encompasses the totality: tree, roots, soil and air. These perspectives form very different views of who we are and what we identify as ourselves. In yoga psychology, we learn that our human nature is more comprehensive; we become conscious of more parts of ourselves. We observe how we identify with different parts of ourselves at different times. Through an inner practice, we experience forces that have previously been hidden from us. Meditation allows a deeper, wider and higher connection to the truths of being. Through the awareness, knowledge and energy of higher states of consciousness, inner dimensions and outer personality come together. In recent years, the West has begun to approach the feminine archetypes and the goddess. In yoga, an additional transformative approach is to invoke the divine Shakti, the conscious force underlying all existence. The divine Shakti can be approached through many paths of knowledge, devotion and works. Through yoga meditation, we receive the MotherĘźs love, support and strength. Surrendering to the divine Shakti is a touchstone of purification and healing. In integral yoga, the divine Shakti has four central aspects: maheshwari (wisdom), mahakali (warrior), mahalakshmi (harmony) and mahasarawati (completion). The force of Shakti brings a powerful awakening and a vast array of resources. Yoga Psychology Meditation aspires to deeper personality integration with truth, being and oneness. Margaret Astrid Phanes, M.A., MFT, has taught meditation for thirty years. She teaches Yoga Psychology for the Sri Aurobindo Centre for Advanced Research online. She teaches meditation at UHMC. Our Lineage Of Light

By Jody Soltau Mountain In every ancient culture, spiritual masters see the universe and everything in it as completely interconnected. Modern spirituality has translated this as “we are all one.â€? Nothing truer has ever been said. However, there is a vital difference between the knowing of the Ancients, and our conceptual understanding of “oneness.â€? No matter how much we understand the concept, we cannot truly embody it until we experience it for ourselves. Australian Aboriginals experience interconnectedness through the dreamtime; ancient Incan shamans identified the “luminous energy fieldâ€? infusing our bodies; alternative health and energy workers speak of “the bodyĘźs innate intelligence.â€? How amazing that ancient Hawaiian wisdom accesses the body as a way to Spirit. The teachings say that “the body gets it first, and the mind catches up later.â€? All of all of our more commonly known genetics lie within our DNA, as well as our lineage of light. As an organic, living expression of life itself, this lineage cannot be “thought awake,â€? but must be accessed directly through the body, bypassing all of our mental and emotional limitations and programming. You can begin this process by becoming aware of the patterns in which you consistently move. Any habitual pathways in your life reflect habitual thoughts, emotions and even outcomes. As we change the patterns in our physical world, all the other levels of our existence have to change. Why? Because, as ancient wisdom tells us, “everything is connected to everything else.â€? What a gift of empowerment our ancient Hawaiian ancestors have given us — the opening to our lineage of light and the access point that is “closer than breath.â€? As my teacher Kahu Abraham KawaiĘźi said, “Finally, you know yourself to be the walking, breathing truth.â€? Jody Soltau Mountain offers sessions and training in the lineage of Kahu Abraham KawaiĘźi. Her Hawaiian Mysticism Retreat will take place November 19th-24th on MolokaĘźi. Please call 808.575.2294 or visit lomilominui.net for more information.

Growing Into Ourselves

By Sue Nehme Lately, things have been rapidly changing. It seems like time itself is speeding up! Today, more and more people are realizing that there is more to life than working 9 to 5 and there are more ways to be happy than just acquiring things. People are choosing responsibility, love, integrity and oneness as ways of life. Many are finding that these traits are so innate within them they could live no other way. We are moving toward something new. It is a new way of living and being and a new way of interacting with ourselves, with each other and with the environment around us. At the same time, it is a return to the old - a return to living as our original blueprints intended. As more people awaken to these blueprints, questions arise as to what to do and how to process all of this information. People are searching for techniques and answers to help them move forward with their growth. Whenever you question which direction to go, the best solution is always to look inside. Your answers all lie within you. Listen only to those things and people that resonate with your heart space. Leave the rest, because you do not need it. Check in, internally, to find where your passion lies and what makes you happy. Choose to do those things that bring you joy and laughter. Your analytical mind is very valuable and knowledgeable, but practice using your heart to make your final decisions. Your heart will never steer you wrong. Most importantly, know that even if there are tendencies, behaviors and beliefs that you want to change about yourself, you are still, most definitely, perfect right now! Sue Nehme works with gifted teens and is a spiritual intuitive on Maui. She is the author of Indigo Handbook, a comprehensive, informative booklet about intuitive kids and adults. Food Becomes Medicine

By Rev. Roma Carlisle I traveled to the mainland recently and serendipitously connected with my former husband, John, after not seeing him for 11 years. During those years, he had developed a full-blown case of diabetes. I took him to see the live blood analyst, Anne Marie Bellec, who had treated me here in Maui in March with wonderful results. I was going blind and my eyes are now regaining sight. Due to being on an alkaline diet – most importantly greens and alkaline water – I have also lost 25 pounds and feel terrific. The body must constantly work to restore an alkaline state since stress and digesting the foods we eat, especially meats, coffee, sugar, chocolate and starches, create toxic acid by-products. These acids provide the perfect environment for diseases like cancer, diabetes, multiple sclerosis, and lupus to get a foothold in our bodies, and wreak havoc in our lives. These diseases require an acidic environment to thrive. If we take charge – choose wisely what we eat and drink – disease cannot exist in our bodies. It is as simple as that, and it puts us in the driverĘźs seat. You can imagine then, how delighted I was to bring John to Anne Marie at her home in Fairfield, Iowa, for his own live blood analysis. Within two days, his blood sugar count became normal, his high blood pressure became normal and, as John is a minister and always follows his intuitive guidance, he stopped all of his medications and insulin shots, cold turkey! He is now fine, losing weight, looking great, and training to be a live blood analyst himself, thanks to prayer and the alkaline diet and lifestyle. It is a true miracle, and we are so grateful. Reverend Roma Carlisle is a New Thought Minister living here in Maui. She facilitates the “Om Choirâ€? and the “Spiritual Forumâ€? at the Unity Church. You may contact her at 808.572.8080 or e-mail romananda@aol.com.

WhatĘźs Your Personal Mission?

By Leianna Ever given any thought to this question? Have you ever really asked yourself what your lifelong mission is? A personal mission is not to be confused with a goal, dream or path. It is a mission - the guiding post of your life ship. It is the stuff your heart nags you about and your soul drives you towards. It is how you desire to see the future unfold for yourself and others. A personal mission clarifies your path, dictates your choices and simplifies your life. Once the homework of self-reflection and introspection has been done, your mission will and can be revealed. Then it is easier to make choices for the outcome you desire, choose friends who feed you and identify your passion as human being. A personal mission also states who are as an authentic, genuine being and where you draw your juice for energy, which ultimately affects the macrocosm of our human consciousness in a positive manner. Each well thought out, clearly felt and highly articulated personal mission affects the good of all like the pebble in the water that ripples out to sea. This simple pebble creates a beautiful sphere of rhythm that works in perfect harmony with everything around it. A simple concept but a powerful tool, it is the masterpiece of creating and manifesting your life at its best. I invite you today to ask yourself this question: What is my personal mission while I live on the planet with all living things? Then go one step further and ask those who are closest to you what their missions are. Guaranteed, you will be blessed with amazing information. LeiannaĘźs mission is to become the living embodiment of her alive and well soul body. It is her passion to teach and lead others toward this path as well, assisting them to let go and find freedom from that which no longer serves them. Call her at 828.713.2864 or e-mail her at leianalove@gmail.com.

PauloĘźs Perspective

Dear Paulo, The more I discover my spiritual self, the more I find myself out of the mainstream of life. ItĘźs almost as if IĘźm outside looking in at everyone else. Is that supposed to happen? - Ahnighta, Kalamazoo, MI Answer: If by “mainstreamâ€? you mean the way most people think and behave, the answer would certainly be yes – because to the extent that you exercise a spiritual point of view you are on the outside looking in! As we go beyond the normal egocentric human viewpoint, weĘźre going to see things from a broader perspective and become more objective. This will make you see things differently than most people – most of whom donĘźt put much priority on expanding their consciousness. This doesnĘźt mean that you need to be (or should be) isolated. For that reason, almost all spiritual paths include some sort of community. In Buddhism, for instance, the importance of having the support of spiritual community (“sanghaâ€?) is emphasized as one of the three “jewelsâ€? of the path. That is, community is considered one of the most important spiritual supports – in addition to the inspiring power of spiritual ideals (“buddhaâ€?) and an evolving learning of the best practices for you (“dharmaâ€?). According to legend, the BuddhaĘźs secretary, Ananda, once asked, “Sir, sometimes I think that having spiritual friends is half of the spiritual life.â€? And the Buddha pointedly replied, “No, Ananda‌ having spiritual friends is the whole of the spiritual life.â€? So, donĘźt worry if you feel different or less interested in the values generally promoted by social networking and media. If you are becoming more aware (i.e. “spiritualâ€?), youĘźll naturally notice – actually, you are noticing – that your priorities become more about the “inner game.â€? Good for you! Strengthening Your HeartĘźs Positive Impulses By Jennifer Lynn Food for thought implies that our thinking is being nourished. I like that. Things that are nourished grow. IĘźm a yoga teacher and my 18 years of practice have taught me that growing new thought patterns is how we make change. Sounds simple, but if you consider that most of our daily thoughts are not original, you can see the implications. We can get stuck in our thinking and we end up stuck in our lives. Even worse, stuck thinking can lead to dementia. Recent medical research has shown a direct correlation between AlzheimerĘźs disease and lack of mental stimulation. Without new thought, the neurological networks of our brains diminish and eventually short circuit. Like everything else in the universe, our minds are destined for continued growth and growing new thoughts requires imagination going beyond what the mind is currently accepting as possible. Moving through a busy day does not leave much room for original thinking. A practice like yoga can be valuable because it helps us clear our minds of old thinking and allows our imaginations feed our minds with fresh inspiration. Yoga also teaches us that persistent practice with pure intention will always burn through the mindĘźs limitations. Over the years, IĘźve watched countless students master challenging asanas (yoga postures) that they once thought were impossible. We do this enough and we stop listening to our self-doubt.

Instead, we learn to feed the mind with positive visions and trust they will grow new thought patterns for better living. This is the crux of the yoga philosophy: as you think, so shall you live. But it is important to point out here that thought alone is not the creative power of our lives. Thoughts grow from the food of our heartsĘź impulses. If the “foodâ€? is fear-based, it will produce limiting thought patterns designed to protect us and growth is difficult. On the other hand, thought patterns that arise from positive heart impulses will move us fearlessly into new territory. My favorite example is the belief in natural abundance versus a belief in scarcity. If a person believes in scarcity, she will work overtime

trying to compensate for the “factâ€? that there is not enough to go around. She may horde and act stingy or work to the point of exhaustion trying to avoid poverty. And there will never be enough. Overwork may even make the person rich, but it will never bring inner peace. On the other hand, a person who observes the natural abundance in nature and sees it as the order of the universe will set his mind at ease and grow thoughts of enjoying and sharing the natural bounty of life. The heart is the source, the mind responds to the quality of the source with either expansive thoughts or limiting ones. So the practice involves strengthening our heartsĘź positive impulses and releasing its negative impulses so the “food for thoughtâ€? is healthy. In my yoga classes, we practice active gratitude and innocence to strengthen our positive heart energy. We practice compassion and forgiveness to diminish our negative heart energy. The result is that our thoughts grow naturally toward ideas for greater health, beauty, joy and connection in our bodies and in the world. During a yoga retreat on Maui in 1996, Jennifer had an awakening that inspired her to leave her corporate job and become a yoga teacher. She has been teaching yoga on Maui since 2003. She runs Maui Soul Yoga Studio where she teaches daily classes and offers Yoga Teacher Trainings. For more info, visit MauiSoulYoga.com.

Nourishing Our Cells With Ionic Trace Minerals By Will Mashburn As a health practitioner, for many years I have specialized in using ionic trace mineral implants in a primal sea formula from the deep waters off Maui. Using MauiĘźs mineral- rich sea water from plumes 200 ft below the surface, purifying it and adding trace minerals, I found that it provides a pH-balanced environment for the bodyĘźs cellular health and renewal. The use of salt, salt water and minerals for cellular health goes back to ancient times. Greek medicine had already discovered topical use of salt for skin lesions, drinking salty or mineralized waters for digestive troubles, and inhaling salt for respiratory diseases. Then the doctor and alchemist Paracelsus (1493–1541 A.D.) introduced an entirely new medical concept. He believed that external factors create disease and conceived a chemicallyoriented medical system, which contrasted with the prevalent herbal medicine practices. He recommended salt water for the treatment of wounds and for use against intestinal worms. A hip-bath in salt water was a superb remedy for skin diseases and itching.â€?This brine,â€? he said, “is better than all the health spas arising out of nature.â€? He described the diuretic effect of salt consumption and prescribed salt preparations of different strengths for the treatment of constipation. I had read of these ancient techniques, but I was inspired to seek my own body healing after seeing Jacque Cousteau on a program talking about the nature of the sea. My health was in a dire state – I was suffering from arthritis in most of my bones and joints, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, and such bad acid reflux

that I had to sleep in a recliner at night. Cousteau pointed over his shoulder and said, “The same thing you laid in for 9 months is right out there in the ocean.â€? Although I had studied some healing methods, I knew that my healing lay in the essential elements of the ocean. I was led to camp in my car on the beach and gather sea water. After purifying it in the sun, I would use it for colonics and hydrotherapy. This treatment lasted for weeks and I began to experience restored health. The diabetes went away; the arthritis went away; the acid reflux left in three days. Eventually my hair returned to its natural color. As it turns out, the sea water around Maui has a high concentration of trace minerals. We are born inside a cell which lives in trace minerals. Our cells need trace minerals to reproduce and repair themselves. Minerals and sodium chloride are necessary for life. In recent years there has been much publicity about the need to reduce salt consumption in societies where salt is added to many processed foods. It has tended to be forgotten that some salt intake is absolutely necessary. The problem with salt is not the salt itself but the condition of the salt we eat – refined! Major producing companies dry their salt in huge kilns with temperatures reaching 1200 degrees F, changing the saltĘźs chemical structure to sodium hydroxate, which is irritating to the system. Mineral rich sea salt and Himalayan crystal salt are healthy alternatives. Cleansing the colon with purified deep sea water and allowing the body to absorb ionic trace minerals nourishes our cells, restores pH-balance, and returns our bodies to dynamic health.

Is Loving Unconditionally Possible? By Frances Ku Experiencing unconditional love during our formative years as children creates a better chance of becoming issue-free, emotionally healthy adults. But the majority of us did not receive this from our caregivers. To experience unconditional love as adults, we must practice giving it. No matter where you are on your path, loving the way God loves is one of the most challenging areas to master. First, unconditional love is not about allowing anyone to use or abuse us as we continue to love them. It is not about suffering while giving. It is about loving without expectation. Can you love someone without love being reciprocated? Can you give without keeping score? No one wants to be taken advantage of and be perceived as a doormat. Ours is a capitalist society that expects equal exchange in any relationship. But what is missing is the notion that love is a gift. It is not a commodity to be bartered with. You cannot expect someone to love you any more than you can expect a birthday present. If a person decides to give you a gift, it is out of his or her free will to do so. To expect it not only sets yourself up for disappointment and feeling victimized, it promotes the tendency to be controlling. Most people think that to love someone means one must be physically and actively involved with that person. This definition limits our capacity to love. The truth is, we can love anyone even if we are apart from them, especially if the relationship is a challenge to our physical and emotional well-being. We love them in spite of who they are, and no matter where they are in the universe, they have our unconditional love. Frances Ku is a Personal Transformation Teacher whose approach to lifeĘźs issues is based on eliminating suffering and reaching enlightenment. Go to personaltransformation1.wordpress.com. She facilitates the Personal Transformation Support Group the first Saturday of each month in Kihei.

The Love Diet

By George Walter Chyz The Love Diet is a fairly simple diet that is based on the principle – what goes around comes around. We impact the world more with our food choices than all other choices combined. More water and petroleum are used for food production and distribution than all other domestic and industrial uses combined. Some people believe that life and death go hand-in-hand. Must we kill to survive? Seeds, nuts, sprouts and roots are alive. Eating them does kill them regardless of whether they are eaten raw or cooked. Once chewed they will never grow. Leaves can be harvested without killing a plant, in this case a more accurate description would be, maiming the plant. Whatʟs left to eat? Fruit! Yes, fruit is different than other foods. The flesh of a fruit is a gift that is designed to be food for other beings. Once a fruit is ripe it falls from the plant and is eaten. It may be eaten by bugs, bacteria, mold, or animals; one way or another itʟs eaten. The seeds are alive and viable in most ripe fruit. The flesh and skin are food. Some skins are not enjoyable to eat, but the flesh of most fruits are delightfully delicious. When a fruit is ripe its skin usually turns a bright color producing an easy to find gift of delicious food. These juicy treats entice animals to seek them out, pick them and eat them. In turn, the seeds contained within the fruit are spread far and wide. This symbiotic relationship is akin to lovemaking. Furthermore, many aspects of yummy lovemaking often feel, look, taste and even smell like an exotic fruit. What would your life be like if you choose to eat mostly fruit? Find out for yourself, try breadfruit chips fried in olive fruit oil and dipped in guacamole. Itʟs all fruit! Itʟs all love! Imagine a life sustained through loving rather than killing! George is the author of a book called, The Way of The Heart: Bridging Heaven and Earth One Heart at a Time available for free download from his website, the-way-of-the-heart.com.

“I Think I Know Who I Am!” By Alan Lowen If you want to learn to swim, thinking about it won’t help until you actually jump in a pool! Most of what we call education lost touch with this basic principle long ago. On life’s physical plane, we learn by experiencing. When it comes to abstracts, we have to think. But our personal inner lives – of instincts, feelings, sex and other energies, intuitive awareness, and deepest of all our soul-consciousness that awakens us to the spiritual dimension of existence – all this we can only know through opening to the experience of it. This seems obvious, but the calamity of our educational system is that so much has been commandeered by the mind. We spend the first two decades of our lives learning to think about it! Intellectualizing dominates the educational agenda. We become verbal processors! We feed our thoughts with words, but as Carl Jung said, “Words don’t butter the parsnips.” Verbal thinking is valuable, but education went off the rails and got side-tracked into schooling when it elevated thinking so high it came to replace experience. When it comes to our inner beings, “I know who I am” often means, “I have a set of intellectual concepts about myself.” I may even cultivate a special

vocabulary to demonstrate my self-awareness, in the same way that New Age pundits fabricate quasi-spiritual concepts to impart cosmic wisdom – for example explaining how we all have to get ready for the next great human quantum leap in 2012. The same game on a grander scale: this we keeps me safely distant from myself. Being able to talk about ourselves, we can avoid those real and often humbling personal encounters with what we don’t accept – and may not even be aware of – in ourselves. Yet they bring us home. Diving this deep we encounter our darkness, and daring to embrace all we find there, we eventually become the whole being our minds can only think about. It is here that we confront the loneliness that masquerades as our high aloneness, the beggar hiding in our guru trip, the pretender in us who has to fake what we can’t feel, and all those other personality trips that keep us from celebrating our real selves! This isn’t surprising. Our schooling taught us how to think our way out of whatever we grew up fearing and mistrusting in ourselves. For 20 years now, when I’m introducing sexuality and Tantric workshops, I have asked people, “Raise your hand if your family or community celebrated your sexual awakening!” There is always a shockwave of silence, then people begin to laugh as they look around and see that no one else has their hand up either. By now I have asked literally thousands of people. Perhaps 12 have raised their hands. Sex is not the issue, and I don’t only lead Tantra workshops. The issue is the fear – often unconscious – that keeps us limited. Thinking cannot help us embrace what we fear. For that we have to dare the fire and water of our inner lives. Befriending it all, we can authentically live it all. Then our intellect can serve, instead of usurping, our real beings. Alan Lowen, Maui resident and founder of The Art of Being®, is internationally recognized as a premier guide for people seeking to integrate and celebrate all aspects of their personal lives and being. His Maui workshop, “Together! You and Your Soul,” is December 3rd-5th. For details, see display ad, this issue, or visit artofbeing.com.

“If music be the food of Love‌â€?* Then what is the food of thought? Surely not some consumer treat Ready to be sold or bought; Analytic meditation? Nutrition for a saner mind? Wait! Be still. Go within. What wisdom do you find? Organic micronutrients – the poems of Hafiz? Or straight up junk food fast & cheap Gossip columns; TV shows; daily or each week. The mind can be a powerful tool Or an insanely dangerous master Dancing the edge like a cosmic fool Or sliding toward disaster. Your mind, my mind, GaiaĘźs mind‌ Who really is the thinker? Spend some time in silence Let the question linger. Perhaps I am not this mind at all Unless I choose to claim it. Then I had better master it Control or at least tame it. The quantum world is elusive Yet its explorers have made it clear Our thoughts can shape reality Fueled by love or fear Some people think in pictures Some think in words Myself, I think in song Like all the other birds But no matter how we think I hope we one day all unite To think the kind of thoughts That will Make Everything Right
