WORDS FROM THE DIRECTOR Dear Friends, Thank you. Thank you to everyone who made a contribution to Literary Arts. Thank you to those who joined us for events or classes. Thank you to those who joined the conversation and helped us all process this strange and difficult year. Thank you to all the writers who taught this year, who reached people, young and old, and helped empower them to tell their story. Thank you to those who served on advisory councils and to our incredible Board, who as volunteers, showed up with wisdom, patience, insight, and humor to guide us through these perilous months. Thank Executive Director Andrew Proctor spent much of the year presenting Literary you to the staff who worked long hours Arts’ programming from the Proctor Family Attic. to adapt all our programs so they could be accessible to our whole community; thank you for always putting our community first. And thank you to all the writers whose words helped us every day to grow, grieve, reflect, adapt, be angry, laugh, remember, forget, look back, look forward, and be present. Your words “I can’t thank you enough— mean more to us readers than we can ever thank you for. In this report you will find how we delivered on the promise of our mission throughout the year and the thousands of people who joined us. You will also find the names of the many people and organizations who contributed to make the work possible. We are grateful for the support, and the faith this support showed in our talented and dedicated staff. For many of us, this was the most difficult year of our professional (and perhaps personal) lives. I can attest it was a very challenging one for me and my family. Part of what kept me going was knowing that literature—stories, essays, novels, and poems, all of it—is what brought our community together, brought us connection, perspective, understanding, and humanity. Because of your support, we are here, and we can now begin to look forward. We will bring all that we have learned, lost, and gained to a brighter year ahead, in community with you and with your support. Thank you again. I am moved by your support. We remain committed to continue building an organization to meet the moment now, and in the future. With gratitude,

this was such a radiant spot in a very bleak year!” — Portland Book Festival attendee

“Thanks for continuing the high quality of content and instructors online! It has been a much-needed island of safety, rejuvenation, and human connection this past year. I am deeply grateful.” — Writing Class student

“Professor Kendi’s school visit was a phenomenal event. I was blown away by the incredible content, and this type of engagement in a virtual environment is inspiring. Thank you for creating space for this opportunity and for emphasizing accessibility.” — Ayn Frazee, Franklin High School librarian

OUR PROGRAMS Our mission is to engage readers, support writers, and inspire the next generation with great literature.

16,000 READERS ENAGED From virtual lectures to intimate discussions, world-renowned authors engaged with our communities. Our season of events featured more than 150 authors whose lectures, readings, and discussions centered on important issues, including the relationship between humans and the wider natural world, the history of racism and how to engage in anti-racist work, and the practice of finding delight in the daily. Children’s author Emily Arrow performing at the 2020 Portland Book Festival.

1,700 WRITERS SUPPORTED Literary Arts remained connected to writers and publishers through online classes and events all year long. Our Oregon Book Awards & Fellowships program continues to celebrate and recognize the remarkable work being created by writers and publishers in Oregon. And we were able to provide some relief to writers impacted by the pandemic by issuing emergency grants from the Brian Booth Writers’ Fund. 2021 Oregon Book Awards nonfiction winner Nicholas Buccola.

3,200 YOUTH INSPIRED Our Youth Programs continued to engage high school students with a variety of literary programs, almost entirely online—in Zoom classrooms, our virtual concert hall, and on digital stages. Students experienced the value literature can offer firsthand with semester-long creative writing residencies taught by local writers, school visits with world-renowned authors, and other opportunities. PORTLAND BOOK FESTIVAL The 2020 Portland Book Festival, presented by Bank of America, moved from downtown Portland to a custom-built online platform. The Festival featured more than 50 live virtual events, took place over 15 days, and was attended by more than 10,000 people from all over the world. The author lineup featured a mix of more than 100 writers, including Ayad Akhtar, Margaret Atwood, Mac Barnett, Brit Bennett, Jericho Brown, Carson Ellis, Carl Hiaasen, Oliver Jeffers, Jill Lepore, Shayla Lawson, Raven Leilani, Marie Lu, Naomi Novik, Claudia Rankine, Karen Russell, Joe Sacco, Jess Walter, Renée Watson, Isabel Wilkerson, Charles Yu, and Lidia Yuknavitch. Pop-up events featuring local authors were pre-recorded at Portland Art Museum and broadcast on YouTube and IGTV, and partnerships with OPB and LiveWire Radio meant there were more than 80,000 views and listens for Portland Book Festival events.

DELVE READERS SEMINARS Our Delve Readers Seminars engaged a community of passionate readers and seminar guides. Delve participants read literature by William James, Greek philosophers, Joy Harjo, Julia Alvarez, Thomas Hardy, and others. As well as participants from Portland, our online seminars brought people from Astoria, Corvallis, Eugene, and Mexico together for discussions of contemporary and classic literature.

205 readers participated in 23 online Delves.

“Delve seminars have offered me a compelling focus on something other than pandemics and the sky falling. I was able to get absorbed in the intellectual stimulation and the experience of a community of readers who each made their unique contribution to experience.” — Delve participant

OREGON BOOK AWARDS AUTHORS ONLINE EVENTS The Oregon Book Awards Author Tour was suspended in 2020/21, due to statewide restrictions on in-person gatherings. Instead, we connected authors to readers in virtual settings with partners across the state such as the First Draft Writers Series in Pendleton and Springfield Library’s “Oregon Celebrates Authors” series. Green Bean Books featured our finalists in the Children’s Book award category in a reading that aired on Independent Bookstore Day on April 24, and Portland Center Stage hosted a panel discussion with finalists in the Drama category, moderated by PCS Associate Artistic Director Chip Miller. All readings and events with our 2021 Oregon Book Awards finalists were also posted on our YouTube channel.

8 online events

featuring Oregon Book Award finalists and winners • 250 attendees watched live, with more than 200 views and counting of the recordings.

OREGON LITERARY FELLOWSHIPS We received 408 applications from writers and 17 applications from publishers for the 2021 fellowships. Out-of-state judges spent several months evaluating these applications, using literary excellence as the primary criterion.

11 Oregon writers and 2 Oregon

publishers awarded fellowships of $3,500 each • 2 writers were awarded Oregon Literary Career fellowships of $10,000 each, for a total of $65,500 fellowships awarded.

BOOTH EMERGENCY FUND In response to the COVID-19 public health crisis, Literary Arts allocated a significant amount from our Brian Booth Writers’ Fund to create the Booth Emergency Fund for Writers. The Fund provided meaningful financial relief to Oregon’s writers, including cartoonists, spoken word poets, and playwrights. Applications were evaluated by Literary Arts staff and members of the Oregon Book Awards and Fellowships Advisory Council. Literary Arts prioritized funding for writers identifying as Black, Indigenous, and People of Color.

Literary Arts distributed a total of $150,000 to 150 writers • 67 applicants were BIPOC writers • All eligible BIPOC applicants received funding.

“As we all struggle towards a better future together, it's nothing less than miraculous to find support from within the community we all love and reflect in our art, music and writing. Thank you!” — Booth Emergency Fund recipient

Authors Tommy Pico, Morgan Parker, Kristen Arnett, and Elissa Washuta.

@LITERARYARTS EVENTS Although our downtown event space remained closed, we were able to partner with local and national organizations to present free online literary events to a wide audience. In April, we partnered with Ooligan Press and Portland State University’s English Department to present the Oregon BIPOC Writers Publishing Event, and we also launched a bi-monthly BIPOC reading series.

1250 total audience attended 39 online events, with 9 community partners and 95 presenting artists.

WRITING CLASSES Students from all levels of experience and backgrounds attended online classes this year to start their memoirs, finish their novels, try new revision skills, and join a community of inspired writers. In addition to Portland participants, students attended online from Bend, Corvallis, Eugene, Hood River, McMinnville, Salem, and other Oregon towns, as well as towns in California, Idaho, Pennsylvania, Texas, and Canada.

508 students participated in 62 online classes.

This was a great event, I appreciate that it was free and focused on BIPOC voices/encouraging BIPOC writers. These types of events are needed, especially during the isolation of the pandemic. — BIPOC publishing event attendee ANNUAL REPORT | 2020–2021

3,200 YOUTH INSPIRED WRITERS IN THE SCHOOLS RESIDENCIES We partnered with 22 educators at ten public high schools throughout the year. While we worked in many English and writing classes, WITS also had writers-inresidence contribute to other subjects, such as digital media, pre-nursing, and social studies. At McDaniel High School, journalist and community organizer Bruce Poinsette worked in Jesse Gardener’s Hip Hop Literature class, where students wrote profiles of local hip hop artists and emcees such as Mic Crenshaw, Karma Rivera, and Jacque Dixon, and had excerpts of their work featured in We Out Here magazine.

“I didn’t know I liked to write so much before the WITS experience, so I think that was my favorite part—discovering that I liked to write and also getting to learn new skills. The only thing I would say was I’d wish it was longer.” —Roosevelt High School student

COLLEGE ESSAY EXCHANGE The College Essay Mentorship Project was renamed to the College Essay Exchange (CEE) to better reflect our programming model. We pivoted CEE online and continued to pair public high school students with community volunteers to review and offer individualized feedback on college and scholarship application essays. Literary Arts also produced a new six-part video series on our YouTube channel to offer quick writing exercises that aid students, near and far, in the writing process. CEE partnered with Parkrose, Grant, Woodburn Wellness, Business and Sports School, and McDaniel (formerly Madison) in the fall and Open School East, Parkrose, Franklin, Gresham, and Roosevelt high schools in the spring. Special thanks to our partners at Portland State University, First Tech Federal Credit Union, The Standard, and Nike, as well as our vital community volunteers, for sharing their expertise and empathy with students.

178 students received 1:1 support with their essays.

713 students served in 28 classes • 26 professional writers hired, including 2 apprentices • 52 students

were published in the 2019/20 WITS anthology The Seeds to Plant the Future

“It was very insightful and reassuring to hear that I was doing well and getting corrections when needed. I definitely lost my touch with literature ever since lockdown, so thankfully I started to regain it, little by little, with the mentor. It gave me big relief when I was finished, knowing I did way better since I had support from other individuals” —Woodburn Wellness, Business and Sports School student

It’s a good feeling… It feels nice to be heard. I’m proud of my poem and I’m glad I’m going out of my senior year with a bang! — Jordan Wolmut, #Virtualandia! 2021 and Verselandia! 2019 Champion, and Benson High School student

AUTHOR VISITS, EVERYBODY READS, AND STUDENTS TO THE SCHNITZ Thousands of students engaged with six award-winning authors in the virtual concert hall and classroom throughout the year for the 2020/21 Portland Arts & Lectures season and Everybody Reads. 1,213 students attended virtual lectures. 590 students attended author visits—300 of which attended two incredible online author visits with The Book of Delights author, Ross Gay.

“I remember reading passages that I loved out loud to my friends at lunchtime, and crying in my bed at midnight when I finished the book. Three years and five rereads later, I’m still in love,” —Lincoln High School student, Lia, on her favorite book The Song of Achilles, which she mentioned while introducing the author, Madeline Miller.

1,071 books provided to students who attended lecture events and author visits.

WORKSHOPS AND EVENTS Our workshop offerings expanded in the 2020/21 school year, and we were thrilled to offer four workshops at Portland Book Festival for educators and students, grades 3–12.

Anis Mojgani congratulates Jordan Wolmut, the 2021 #Virtualandia champion on her win.

#VIRTUALANDIA We reimagined #Virtualandia!, an educational digital slam poetry series-turned-championship event in light of ongoing distance learning. Inspired by Verselandia!, 25 youth slam poets from 12 schools entered the virtual slam poetry competition by submitting a video performance of their original work. Finalists had their performances professionally recorded, and Anis Mojgani, Oregon’s Poet Laureate and Literary Arts Board member, served as Master of Ceremonies for the championship event. Tickets to the event were free for students and educators. #Virtualandia! 2021 also included a month-long workshop and 1:1 coaching session series with slam poets. 19 students attended seven events and two youth-facilitated workshops. Lucy Anderson, a Gresham High School student, was hired to design our logo.

We also hosted our first youth panel at Portland Book Festival, Make Art & Take Action: Youth Panel on Writing Creatively in Extraordinary Times, featuring three dynamic Oregon high school students from Woodburn, Salem, and Portland.

LEGACY SOCIETY MEMBER STORY: SARA GUEST Sara Guest lives her passion for literature, so when she moved to Portland in 2004, she quickly became involved with Literary Arts. Since then, she has volunteered or participated in almost all of our programs. Sara is proud to support and “loves the idea of creating experiences for readers and writers that support the whole house of rooms that is the literary experience.” To read the rest of Sara’s story and to learn more about Literary Arts’ Legacy Society, visit literary-arts.org/legacy-gifts. If you are interested in making a planned gift or if you have already named Literary Arts in your estate plans, please contact Lydah DeBin, Director of Development, at lydah@literary-arts.org.

The First of Us This morning, I dreamed of coyotes. A pack crossed my mother’s yard last night, dried to the bone by eight-year drought. Endlessly hungry, they killed every rabbit in reach. This morning, I tried to dream of love, but the animals won out. What does that say about my priorities? How can I witness this world without losing sight of myself? Two more minutes,

Alyssa Ogi 2021 Oregon Literary Fellowship Recipient Oregon Poetry Community Fellowship

and a mother’s child might be next, whoever sits among the palm and lemon, scented by summer, scattered in time; they’ll eat the wet parts first out of habit. The first days on this earth were hard, I’m certain, yet it was sweetest when we could hold our hands out and expect anything good to happen.
