ABOUT LITERARY ARTS Portland Book Festival (PBF) is a program of Literary Arts. Founded in 1984, Literary Arts is a communitybased nonprofit literary organization located in downtown Portland. Our mission is to engage readers, support writers, and inspire the next generation with great literature.

PROGRAMS OF LITERARY ARTS ENGAGE READERS:

Portland Arts & Lectures brings the world’s most celebrated writers, artists, and thinkers to our community and connects readers and writers of all ages through classroom visits and workshops. Portland Book Festival brings writers and readers of all ages together to celebrate a shared passion for books. Next year’s Portland Book Festival will take place on November 2, 2024. Delve Readers Seminars cultivates community around the shared experience of reading. By gathering around books, we engage in dialogues with authors we love and artists who show us new perspectives. The Archive Project Radio Show and Podcast features the most sought-after recordings from our Portland Arts & Lectures series, Portland Book Festival, and other community events. Each week, new lectures are available to stream for free. Listen on OPB Radio Sunday evenings at 7:00 p.m., on our website at literary-arts.org/archive, or wherever you get your podcasts.

SUPPORT WRITERS:

Programs for Writers support, promote, and celebrate Oregon’s writers and publishers. In addition to the Oregon Book Awards & Fellowships for emerging and established writers, the program also offers writing classes and literary events at our downtown center and produces the Oregon Book Awards Author Tour, which connects writers and readers throughout the state.

INSPIRE THE NEXT GENERATION:

Youth Programs inspire public high school students to write, publish, and perform their own creative writing. Writers in the Schools residencies bring working writers into classrooms. Students to the Schnitz gives young people access to great books and influential authors. The College Essay Exchange pairs mentors with college applicants. And the annual Verselandia! and East Side Slam poetry slams showcase high school spoken word artists.

Dear Friends, Welcome to the 2023 Portland Book Festival. We are thrilled to be back downtown at the South Park Blocks with you to celebrate books and storytelling. This year’s Portland Book Festival features a full week of programming with our Cover to Cover partner events (p. 20), and we’re expanding the Friday Night Book Market (p. 17) to an extra hour and an extra ballroom at Portland Art Museum. Plus, we have a brand-new venue partner and expanded kids programming thanks to The Judy Kafoury Center for Youth Arts, home to the NW Children’s Theater. Every year at Portland Book Festival, we strive to bring you world-famous writers along with some of the most exciting new and emerging voices. At this year’s festival you can learn about everything from the rise—and fall—of cryptocurrency, to the meaning of dreams, to the history of human evolution. Memoirists will share their stories of being raised in a strict Rastafarian family, growing up in an Atlantic City Chinese restaurant, and of living split between two cultures. We’ll ask important questions about the meaning of pie, the failures of American health care, and the urgency of climate activism. Novels will take us into dystopian futures and back into lost histories, explore secrets and inheritance and family and all three combined, and take us to Hawaii and Mexico City, on a road trip across America, and into life right here to Portland. There’s something for everyone at Portland Book Festival, and we hope you’ll be open to discovery and possibility. With over 100 authors in more than 50 events, everyone can try something new. GENERAL FESTIVAL INFORMATION Portland Book Festival features more than 100 presenters in onstage author events, kids’ story times, pop-up readings, and writing workshops. This one-day celebration also includes a book fair featuring more than 80 national and local vendors, as well as local food trucks. Writing workshops for youth and adults will run online and in person throughout the festival week. In addition, Portland Book Festival Cover to Cover, a week of free neighborhood literary encounters, takes place from October 30 to November 5 in multiple locations throughout the Portland area. BOOK SIGNING AND POLICIES

A festival pass admits you, space permitting, to all in-person PBF events, with the exception of the Michael Lewis and Viet Thanh Nguyen events, which require a ticket for entry. We encourage you to purchase and pick up your passes in advance. Advance passes and information available at pdxbookfest.org.

Authors will sign books immediately following their onstage event unless otherwise noted. Books must be purchased from a festival bookstore in order to be signed, with the exception of one pre-owned book per author. Why do we restrict pre-owned books? On-site book sales are absolutely critical to the success of the festival. By purchasing books at the festival, you support the independent bookstores that partner with us as well as the authors and publishers who travel from near and far to share their work at the festival. Thank you for your support and understanding of this policy.

Masking policies vary for all our events, and are subject to change. Please bring a mask with you and check individual event web pages for requirements. Entry to and seating at Portland Book Festival events is available on a first-come, first-served basis, and standing in line does NOT guarantee entry to any specific event even with a festival pass. Plan to arrive early to your desired events. Saving seats is not permitted. All rooms will be cleared between events. If your desired event is at capacity, you can check out a different discussion, find a pop-up reading, explore the Portland Art Museum, or take a break at the food carts.

Book dealers are NOT allowed to bring books into the book signing area. Dealers with rolling carts and/or wagons are not allowed on the festival grounds. Portland Book Festival features satellite bookstores at every allday PBF stage, where attendees can purchase a book and get it signed on site. See page 11 for details on each satellite bookstore.

Saturday, November 4, 2023 • 10:00 a.m.–6:00 p.m. The Box Office Tent in front of the Mark Building opens at 8:30 a.m. and closes at 5:00 p.m. Venue doors and the exhibitor fair both open at 9:00 a.m. All events conclude by 6:00 p.m.

WRITING FROM ART (POETRY) (GRADES 9–12)

In this workshop, we'll learn how to build a fictional world and add texture to imaginary settings. Whether our story takes place on a modern-day Earth or on a planet far, far away, a fictional world and how characters interact with it takes some planning! Using details taken directly from art in the space, students will leave the workshop with an invented setting to use as they please.

Facilitator: Amy Minato

In this workshop, we’ll discover parallels between visual and written art, and use pieces in the museum collection to inspire poetry. Our activities will include practicing imagery, form, metaphor, and perspective to engage in conversation with actual paintings in a supportive writing community. No previous writing experience necessary! The only requirement is to bring your imagination and good vibes.

NARRATIVE AND SOCIAL JUSTICE STORYTELLING (JOURNALISM) (GRADES 9–12)

In this workshop, we’ll learn journalistic storytelling techniques and explore how they can be used to cover social justice stories. Utilizing examples from local and national news, students will practice using journalistic storytelling and media literacy to engage with social justice issues more thoughtfully in their communities.
