The First of Us

This morning, I dreamed of coyotes. A pack crossed my mother’s yard last night, dried to the bone by eight-year drought. Endlessly hungry, they killed every rabbit in reach.

This morning, I tried to dream of love, but the animals won out. What does that say about my priorities? How can I witness this world without losing sight of myself? Two more minutes,

and a mother’s child might be next, whoever sits among the palm and lemon, scented by summer, scattered in time; they’ll eat the wet parts first out of habit. The first days on this earth were hard, I’m certain,
